LAJES FIELD, AZORES  In line with the U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein’s squadron revitalization initiative, the 65th Air Base Group consolidated the 65th Communications Squadron, 65th Operations Squadron and the 65th Security Forces Squadron forming the 65th Air Base Squadron, June 13. “The squadron is the beating heart of the United States Air Force; our most essential team,” Goldfein said in a letter to Airmen. “Our vision demands that squadrons be highly capable, expeditionary teams who can successfully defend our nation’s interests in both today’s and tomorrow’s

complex operating environments.” During the fall 2017 Corona, major commands were tasked to determine what constituted a “Healthy Squadron.” U.S. Air Forces in Europe noticed a natural break point of 75 or greater authorizations. It was determined that well- planned consolidations would provide the USAFE commander the means to enhance warfighting capabilities, expand leadership opportunities and prepare commanders for stronger leadership responsibility and depth. In June 2018, the Secretary of the Air Force, the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force signed the Squadron

Landing Zone Safety Officer course

Students participating in the Landing Zone Safety Officers course learn how to properly secure a pallet on Ramstein Air Base, May 23. This allows them to further their skills, which can be used in other career fields.

Story and photos by Aiman 1st Class Kaylea Berry 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 435th Contingency Response Group hosted a ten-day Landing Zone Safety Officer course that included in-class and field training May 20 to 31 on Ramstein Air Base. The LZSO course trains specific career fields to conduct aircraft operations and construct landing zones in challenging locations. The course is open to air traffic controllers, airfield managers and radar weather and landing system technicians. Tasked deployers who will support a landing zone are slotted first for the course. This class consisted of 27 Airmen.

While at Bitburg Airfield, Germany, the course covered how to survey the landing zone, mark it appropriately, read the Kestrel meter, and communicate with the aircraft. Each of these actions is essential for the aircraft to land safely. U.S. Staff Sgt. Cameron Piontek, 86th Operations Support Squadron air traffic control watch supervisor, talks about why the Air Force is moving in this direction. “The Air Force is moving towards having a smaller carbon footprint in the areas that we are located,” said Piontek. “So that way we can go to environments where we don’t have to have an entire construction crew to build a runway. We can just go in, survey

it out and make sure it’s safe for certain types of aircraft.” Instead of having Airmen focus on their specific career field, this course trains them in multiple areas needed for

a landing zone. They will be able to perform as an air traffic controller, airfield manager, and radar weather and landing system technician all in one.

“With the specialized training, we’re given certifications in equipment like the 10K forklift, all-terrain vehicles, and humvees,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Bradley Hayward, 55th Operations Support Squadron air traffic controller. “So when we are in a deployed area we’re not stuck in our job. If an aircraft needs to be unloaded we’re certified to help.” Hayward also spoke about why landing zones are necessary. “It’s especially important for places that don’t have set runways. It allows us to go to locations and bring in KC-135s and heavy C-17s because they are capable of landing on materials other than concrete, such as dirt and open fields,” said Hayward. The main focus of the course is to teach the students how to keep the ground and air crews safe and keep operations going no matter the location. The first course at Ramstein started in June 2018 and continues to improve based on feedback from students as well as lessons learned from those downrange.

Until mid-August, commercial trucks and/ or buses will NOT be authorized to enter or exit the gate due to ongoing construction.

Due to the merger of the community associations Landstuhl and Kaiserslautern-Sued, the registrar’s offices will be closed from June 21 to July 1.

Sewage construction

From June 17 until mid August Kaiserslautern’s Auf dem Sess, Von-Braun-Strasse and Ottostrasse will undergo sewage construction. Ottostrasse and Auf dem Sess will be closed off for traffic completely, Von-Braun-Strasse will close off one side to traffic. Pedestrians are not affected by the construction measures.

From June 17 to Aug. 23, 6 to 8 a.m., Mon to Fri, the East Gate will operate with two inbound lanes only. No outbound lanes. The LVIS gate will operate normal working hours, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mon to Fri, except German holidays.

Secretary, chief of staff initiate dialogue with commanders on a plan for new officer promotion categories by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein shared in a memorandum to wing, numbered Air Force and major command commanders May 31, a draft plan for new Line of the Air Force officer promotion categories. The memo explains the proposed change and directs commanders to solicit and provide feedback from officers to major command commanders by July 31, with “a final recommendation due to the secretary and chief not later than 30 August 2019.” According to the memo, “The reemergence of great power competition, rapid development and fielding of advanced technologies, and new concepts of warfare and competition that span the entire spectrum of conflict demand a joint force structured to match this reality. These trends, if unaddressed, will challenge our ability to fight and win.” The memo continues, “Over the past eighteen months, we have extensively examined how we develop, evaluate and promote officers across our total force. We have concluded that our current system, which has served us well in the past, is not optimized to support future joint warfighting in this new era. Based on our research, extensive discussions with Airmen across the Air Force (active, Guard, Reserve and civilian), and surveys with joint and inter-agency teammates, we believe it is time to expand the Line of the

Air Force promotion categories into more subgroupings. The following categories represent the disciplines needed

for future joint warfighting and allow for developmental competitive pathways that are optimized for each category.”

The memo states, “While these changes have been reviewed and discussed at leadership levels, we realize this would be a significant change for the officer corps. Rather than make an immediate decision, we thought it best to share the draft with commanders first in order to engage in a dialogue with the officers assigned to you and solicit feedback before proceeding.” In addition to commander-solicited feedback, Shon Manasco, assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and reserve affairs, and Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services, will be deploying briefing teams to various installations across major commands

and functional communities during June and July to brief the proposed changes in-depth, answer questions and capture feedback from Airmen who are able to attend. Additional virtual venues and online sites will also be available to gather feedback from across the force. The memo concludes, “For this foundational change to succeed, commanders at every echelon must take ownership, understand and explain why we are proposing this significant change, listen to the officers entrusted to your care and pass your thoughts up the chain. GSU Airlifters of the Week put training to test by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

LAJES FIELD, AZORES  May 23 began like any other Thursday, but events quickly transpired which proved the day would be anything but ordinary. After a fire ignited on a back-up generator at Lajes, two professionals sprung to action. Mrs. Maria Costa and Mr. Dinarco Coelho, both 65th Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels distribution system workers, jumped to action and quite literally saved the day. Relying on their comprehensive fire prevention training, both individuals instinctively reacted to relay an emergency message to the Lajes Fire Department and Fuels Service Center. Before emergency responders even arrived, the two utilized nearby fire extinguishers and contained the fire. This dynamic duo prevented the spread of a fire to the Fuels Management Flight’s 82 million dollar facility and ensured the safety of personnel inside. Costa credited her extensive training for helping prepare her for the unexpected. These two individuals ensured Lajes’ mission of enabling expe-

REVITALIZATION from Page 1 Revitalization Implementation Plan to smartly consolidate and/or reduce the number of squadrons in order to rebuild healthy organizations and repurpose manpower against highest priority missions and tasks. “Consolidation of 65th ABG units provides healthier, more robust squadrons that are better able to support the movement of expeditionary forces to and from the fight,” said Col. Travis Leighton, 65th ABG commander. The 65th ABG has been deliberately planning the consolidation and ensuring manpower authorizations from the inactivated units’ realignment into the 65th ABS. Overall authorizations and manning will continue at the same levels, there are no planned changes to those requirements. Any potential savings will be reinvested into higher priority missions. Scheduled for the summer of 2019 is the consolidation of the 65th Civil Engineer Squadron, 65th Comptroller Flight, 65th Contracting Flight and 65th Force Support Flight to form the 765th Air Base Squadron.

Installation Management Command Europe WIESBADEN  “All gave some, some gave all” were the words that summed up the courageous feats of military personnel who served in the Berlin Airlift from 1948 to 1949. Community members remembered these acts of heroism during memorial services on June 10 and 11 at Lucius D. Clay Kaserne airfield at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden. The memorial services were a part of the Berlin Airlift’s 70th Anniversary commemoration. During the ceremony, garrison leaders, local officials, time witnesses and retired Col. Gail Halvorsen, the famed “candy bomber” and “chocolate pilot” during the Berlin Airlift, spoke to the audience about the historical significance of the airlift in military operations and its symbolism of friendship and alliance. “The Berlin Airlift was the first time in history where military air transport was used to achieve diplomatic goals,” said local historian Dr. John Provan. “Only the Berlin Airlift has come to symbolize American resolve in supporting nations in time of need through the use of military air transport.” During the Berlin Blockade from 1948 to 1949, the Soviet Union blocked the Western Allies’ railway, road and canal access to the sectors of Berlin under Western control. The airlift, which started June 26, 1948, and ended Sept. 30, 1949, was a joint humanitarian effort between the U.S., British and French militaries to help those impacted by the blockade. The airfield on Clay Kaserne served as a hub as pilots made frequent flights from Wiesbaden to Tempelhof Airport in West Berlin. The U.S. Air Force transported 1.8 million tons to West Berlin, Provan said. “A total of 75,000 individuals were directly involved in making the combined

A lasting friendship One of the Berlin Airlift pilots was Halvorsen, then a first lieutenant, who became known as the “Candy Bomber” for delivering candy to German children. He constructed makeshift parachutes with handkerchiefs so candy and other goods could drop from his plane into the children’s hands. At 98 years old, Halvorsen attended the ceremony and spoke about his experiences. “The real heroes are the Berliners,” he said. “They talked a lot about freedom and how much it meant to the human soul. The spirit of freedom is alive and well. We (the Americans) are glad to be here, and we are proud to be by your side forever if that is what it takes.” By his side was Mercedes Wild, one of the Berliners, who was 7 years old during the airlift. Wild wrote a letter to the man she called the “chocolate pilot” and told him that his plane scared the family’s chickens. She then asked if he could drop candy by her family’s home. Her story later became the subject of the children’s book “Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot.” Wild and Peter Witmer, USAG Wiesbaden school liaison officer, read excerpts from the book on stage. Decades after the Berlin Airlift, Wild and Halvorsen reunited and formed a lasting friendship. She reflected on the impact of Halvorsen’s acts of kindness on her life as well as on others’. “Most of the children in school did not have a father because of the war. Col. Gail Halvorsen was a symbol of a father in my school,” she said.

Berlin Airlift commemoration draws 45,000 visitors Story by Emily Jennings USAG Wiesbaden and Jessica Ryan USAG Benelux More than 45,000 people attended a celebration at U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden’s airfield on Clay Kaserne June 10 and 11 in commemoration of 70 years since the end of the Berlin Airlift. “This event is a testament to the strong and enduring friendship between the German and American people that began 70 years ago with the air bridge to Berlin, which remains the largest humanitarian airlift in history,” said USAG Wiesbaden Commander Col. Noah Cloud. The U.S. Air Forces in Europe band “The Ambassadors” set the mood for the June 10 event, playing 1940’s big band music, which was followed by parachutists who dropped into the event.

Not long after, the “Candy Bomber,” retired U.S. Air Force Col. Gail Halvorsen, flew in on a C-47 Skytrain, the type of aircraft in which he flew supplies to West Berlin in 1948 and 1949. Halvorsen arrived on the runway to a water salute, greeted the waiting crowd and participated in a memorial ceremony to honor 81 personnel who lost their lives in support of the airlift — 13 Germans, 32 Americans and 36 British. In the afternoon, a formation of C-47 Skytrains dropped small parachutes with candy for children, the USO hosted a 1948 Bob Hope reenactment and the Sick Puppies performed more music for the crowd. In addition to 17 vintage C-47s that arrived for the event, four T-6 Texans flew in formation alongside Halvorsen as he arrived. On the airfield, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, AH-64 Apache helicopter and a C-12 Huron aircraft were also on display.

“This event was only possible because of the great working relationship and partnership that exists between our American community and the city of Wiesbaden,” Cloud said. For the Wiesbaden community, the celebration was a special time for people to stand the same ground where history took place decades ago. “It’s important to know that a part of the enduring quality of this community is its history,” said Lee Carter, an English teacher at Wiesbaden High School. U.S. Army Capt. Garrett Sobalvarro attended the June 11 event with his family and commented on the strength of the U.S. and host nation partnership. “It’s a great show of solidarity with our host nation,” he added. “There was a lot of gratitude from the Germans for our help and our allies’ help.”

Army lengthens tours for Soldiers in Europe, Japan

by Sean Kimmons Army News Service The Army is adding a year to overseas tours for some Soldiers heading to Europe and Japan, as part of an effort to boost readiness and reduce moves. Under the new policy, which applies to permanent change-of-station orders published after June 14, tours for Soldiers who have no dependents and are not married to other service members will extend from 24 to 36 months. Tours for Soldiers accompanied by dependents will remain at 36 months. An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 Soldiers could be affected by the policy each year.

“You won’t have the turnover,” said Mary Sturm, who handles overseas and enlisted assignment policy for the Army’s G-1 personnel office. “Anyone staying in one location longer is going to provide a little more stability.” Extra stability could provide benefits all the way down to the squad level, from tank crews to those in office settings, as Soldiers train in the same teams with less turnover. “That enables the crews to actually work together for a longer period of time,” Sturm said. “You’ll get to utilize the skills you learn, rather than move on to the next location.” The new policy applies to the following areas: • Germany: All locations except Donaueschingen

• Italy: All locations except Mt. Venda • Belgium: All locations except Betrix • Japan: All locations except Akizuki Kure, ltami (Sapporo), Kumamoto, Kuma Shima, KyogaMisaki, Okuma, Osaka, le Shima, Seburiyama, Sendai, and Shariki Soldiers already on unaccompanied tours for 24 months or less at these locations are also encouraged to request an extension, according to All Army Activities message 042/2019. There are no current plans to expand this policy to other locations. The policy is also part of the Army’s larger efforts to alleviate transportation issues seen by Soldiers and their Families when traveling to new assignments.

Some of those efforts include increasing the capacity of household goods carriers, improving customer service at all transportation offices, and setting up a 24/7 hotline to solve problems if local offices cannot. At a Family forum in February, Army Secretary Mark T. Esper said the service was moving to standardize continental U.S. tours and most overseas tours to 36 months to reduce PCS moves. Esper also mentioned Soldiers should be able to stay at a location for even longer than three years. “That’s fine as long as you’re performing your role and it’s value added to the Army,” he said. “We want as much as possible to reduce PCS turmoil.”

NATURE’S REFLEXOLOGY AT “BAREFOOT PARK”

The secret to feeling young might be as simple as walking barefoot outdoors. Sometimes I just enjoy being silly with my grown daughters. Today was such a day. We shed our shoes to traverse Bad Sobernheim’s barefoot path, known as Barfuss-Pfad in German.

My oldest daughter educated me on this walk that it is also “grounding.” There is a lot to be said about the health benefits of this particular type of exercise. Even the brochures promote this walk as nature’s way of treating yourself to a foot reflexology massage. And, yes, there is a foot wash that you can use when you return to get your shoes. The path

Knee-deep in mud

When we first removed our shoes and I realized that we would be beginning the 3.5 kilometer walk with a 15yard stretch of knee-deep mud (called a clay pool), it took a lot of effort for the “mommy” in me to stop worrying about what might be lurking underneath that mud. I mean, come on, had I not raised these girls to stay out of the mud? Not only am I now per-

The path is a flat loop and is quite easy for the most part. One side offers wide-open, ever-changing scenery through a great big meadow bordered by a hiking and biking trail. On the barefoot side, the terrain is mostly hard-packed dirt, mulch and grass. Scattered throughout are several stations of pine cones, tree bark, river stones, wine bottle corks, volcanic rock, sandstone and brick. For those interested in foot gymnastics, there are wooden rollers, balance beams, ladders, and posts in stair-step formation.

Yes, even moms can do this! The trail crosses the Nahe River twice. You can choose to head feet first into the chilly, brisk, knee-high river while clutching two ropes for balance or you can simply walk a bit further and go across the bridge. No wimps here!

To get back across the river, you can inch single file across a rope bridge suspended above the water, or choose to take a small ferry. We opted for the suspension bridge. The path ends at a snack bar overlooking a playground. There is also a playground just before the suspension bridge. It took us about an hour to walk the entire path. There was a lot of conversation and laughter during this time. I honestly cannot recall the last time I went barefoot in public on a random Wednesday. Once I overcame the mud and dirt caked between my toes and up to my knees, I immensely enjoyed this adventure! More information The park is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily between May 1 and Oct. 3 but will close in the event of inclement weather. The cost is 3.50 euro

(for adults), 2 euro for children (ages 3-17) and is free for children under the age of 3. Additionally, furry children (aka dogs) are NOT allowed in this park.

How to get there Bad Sobernheim is northwest of Kaiserslautern, about 62 miles or an hour’s drive. Once in Bad Sobernheim, head into the main part of town and follow the signs for Barfusspfad.
