U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, speaks to attendees of a Memorial Day ceremony at the Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt-Regniéville, France, May 26. August spoke of the history of Memorial Day and the importance of remembering those who perished.

In celebration of the 100th Memorial Day, Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, attended a remembrance ceremony at Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery, ThiaucourtRegniéville, France, May 26. Saint-Mihiel American cemetery is the final resting place for more than 4,000 Americans, including one Medal of Honor recipient and 117 unknown Americans; as well as a wall featuring 284 who are missing in action. As part of the ceremony, the 37th Airlift Squadron conducted a C-130J Super Hercules flyover.

“We gather this Memorial Day weekend at this peaceful site amongst these Linden trees and we remember the commitment of our blood and treasure,” said August. To recognize and commemorate those who fell in the line of duty, August reminded the crowd who these Americans were. “These are members of our family, our brothers in arms, and these stories and memories remain with us today,” he said. Those fallen Americans were assigned to the newly formed First Army, commanded by General of the Armies John J. Pershing, who led more than 500,000 Americans and 110,000 See MEMORIAL DAY, Page 6

Page 2 AWARD from Page 1 of the Airmen who not only make the mission happen but excel at doing so. “Our Airmen, our families, and our community work hard to make Ramstein Air Base a special place to live and work, and it’s the best installation in the world,” said August. “This tremendous accomplishment further proves we are truly the World’s Best Wing, and we couldn’t be more proud.” The selection board visited units across the 86th AW, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, and other tenant units to see how well Ramstein Airmen achieved the Air Force’s objectives in several areas of installation management, including mission support, energy conservation, quality of life and unit morale, environmental stewardship, real property management, safety, health and security, communications and public relations. This is the second time Ramstein

has won the award, the first time being in 2006. The base will receive a commemorative trophy and flag as well as a congratulatory letter from the president. The base will also receive up to 700,000 dollars that are planned to be used for further quality of life and installation management initiatives. The command team took solicitations from the community to get ideas on what the money should be used for. Along with Ramstein, four other military installations were awarded the CINC Installation Excellence award for being the best in their service: • U.S. Army Garrison Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, Fort Stewart, Georgia • Naval Base San Diego, California • Marine Air Ground Task Force Training Command, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twenty-nine Palms, California • DLA Distribution Susquehanna, New Cumberland, Pennsylvania

Airlifter of the Week: 86 DTP Admin Manager receives honor by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen are familiar with the routine: a call comes from the Drug Demand Reduction Program office, and it’s off to take a drug test. What Airmen may not know is that it takes a team of dedicated professionals to ensure the testing is administered and accomplished according to Air Force standards. Yessica Sutton, 86th Airlift Wing Drug Testing Program administrative manager, is one of those dedicated professionals working tirelessly behind the scenes. Her supervisors recognized her as the rock behind the 86th AW DDR program at Ramstein Air Base and its associated geographically separated units. On a daily basis, she supports and trains three different program managers and installation augmentees. Sutton begins her day by prepping the office for daily testing. Once the list of people to be tested is generated, she’ll individually send a notification letter to every unit’s trusted agent via their Sharepoint. When samples are collected and quality checked by two different individuals, they are sent to Wilford Hall at Lackland Air

Force Base for testing. Sutton’s work goes beyond her office as she is utilized as an inspector general for other wings within the U.S. Air Forces in Europe command. “Our DDR program overlooks more than 80 units to include GSUs, making the Ramstein DDR Program the biggest DDR program in USAFE,” said Sutton. She routinely inspects each unit’s individual DDR program. In the event that someone tests positive, she goes on temporary duty to take part in court martials where she testifies on all of their DDR procedures. For some, it may be a tough job, but Sutton seems to have found the silver lining. “One of the best things I get to experience is meeting people from the entire 86th Airlift Wing,” said Sutton. “Whether they come to our office to provide a sample, or are performing observer duties to assist the DDR program, I really enjoy conversing with people from all backgrounds.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th Airlift Wing the World’s Best Wing.

Wilson praises Airmen, expresses gratitude in farewell remarks reflecting on her tenure as Air Force secretary by Charles Pope Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Two years and nine days since becoming the 24th Secretary of the Air Force, Heather Wilson bid a formal farewell, May 21, to the institution and its Airmen, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve and declaring, “I will always be an Airman.” “I lived a blessed life,” Wilson said in a 15-minute speech which reflected on her tenure as the Air Force’s highestranking civilian official. She praised the skill and dedication of Airmen while comparing lessons learned from gardening as a corollary for the qualities that make for good leaders and an effective Air Force secretary. You need a plan, she said; you need friends to help, meaning allies, and “as long as it’s safe, let people tinker with the tools.” “Our Airmen…tinker and fix things in new ways,” she said, extending the reference. “Let your people tinker with the tools. … As a leader, you have to think about the long term and strengthen the positive culture.” “Every one of you in this hanger, every single one of you, is a leader,” Wilson said, speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Hanger 3, surrounded by her family, senior Air Force leaders, including three former secretaries, approximately 900 Airmen and a B-2 bomber. Wilson’s comments came at the end of the two-hour ceremony in which she was praised for her service and her achievements. Wilson announced her resignation in March after she was selected to be president of the University of Texas, El Paso. Her last day as Air Force secretary was May 31. In a clear reference to what she sees as her legacy, Wilson told the crowd that a good gardener is someone who “accepts with confidence you won’t be able to harvest all the fruits of your labor” and embraces the “beauty of work well done on something good.” While Wilson reflected on two years as secretary by highlighting the achievements and contributions of Airmen across the Air Force’s global enterprise, other speakers focused squarely on Wilson herself. “You have been the leader we needed at this exact time in our Air Force,” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein said, praising Wilson. “As an Airman’s Airman, you have served as a driving force for positive change.” Under her direction and in part-

nership with Goldfein, the Air Force became both more prepared and nimble in the last two years. A shortage of more than 4,000 active duty maintainers that greeted Wilson when she arrived in 2017 has been closed to zero. Aggressive efforts to streamline the procurement process has shaved 100 years off traditional timelines while a series of major contracts approved in recent years saved more than 17 billion dollars. Wilson has been a catalyst as well driving innovation. She spearheaded the analysis which said the “Air Force we need” must increase to 386 squadrons from 312 to confront threats in an era of great power competition. Wilson was also a key architect of an ambitious upgrade for the service’s science and technology strategy released in April. That document will serve as a blueprint to better identify, develop and deploy breakthrough technologies in the future. Wilson is leaving a considerable mark on the institution and its total force of 685,000 Airmen worldwide. She helped develop and manage the Air Force’s annual budget of more than 138 billion dollars and was an influential voice directing strategy and policy development, risk management, weapons acquisition, technology investments and talent management of

Airmen across a global enterprise. She was a central figure in efforts to strengthen and build the Air Force to meet new global threats, particularly those posed by Russia and China. She was a strong advocate for increasing overall readiness and addressing personnel shortages that affected the Air Force’s ability to fulfill any mission at any time. Overall, the Air Force is 17 percent more ready today than it was when she was confirmed. Wilson was a strong advocate for streamlining the contracting process

when possible and injecting a more entrepreneurial approach. In his remarks, Goldfein said Wilson will be remembered for “setting the conditions to build a more lethal and ready force we need for the future fight” while also paving the way “for the future Airmen who will follow in our footsteps. And while hardware is important, Goldfein said Wilson, “understood the priority is with the people and improving the quality of service and quality of life for our uniformed volunteers and their families is where it starts.”

Page 6 MEMORIAL DAY from Page 1 allied forces in a massive campaign to seize ground which was held by the German army for more than three years during World War I. “(Pershing) forged a combined arms team of infantry, artillery, airpower, and tanks,” August said. “This plan had tanks supporting the advancing infantry, with two tank companies interspersed into a depth of at least three lines. The result was an almost unopposed assault, reaching its first day’s objective before noon, and the second day’s objective by late afternoon. The attack went so well that Pershing ordered a speedup in the

Kaiserslautern American offensive. By the morning of 13 Sept., the 1st Division, The Big Red One advancing from the East, joined up with the 26th Division, the Yankee Division moving in from the West, and before evening, all objectives had been captured,” he continued. “The sacrifice of those resting here in eternal peace was not about fame, not about fortune, not about force,” August said. “Instead, these heroes gave their lives to end a horrific war, to preserve democratic values, and to fight for each other.” After concluding his remarks, August laid a memorial wreath and Staff Sgt. Former AFRICOM surgeon takes command of LRMC by Alofagia Oney Regional Health Command Europe Landstuhl Regional Medical Center conducted a change of command ceremony, May 29, at the Landstuhl Parade Field recognizing outgoing commander, Col. Timothy L. Hudson, and welcoming incoming commander, Col. Michael A. Weber. Weber, who is triple-board certified in general surgery, vascular surgery and management, became the 34th commander at LRMC, marking his second time in command of a military medical center. Weber comes to LRMC from Stuttgart, Germany, where he was the command surgeon for U.S. Africa Command. This isn’t Weber’s first assignment to the Kaiserslautern Military Community, having been previously assigned to the 13th Chemical Company in Baumholder, in 1988. Weber was the chief of vascular surgery and the vascular surgery fellowship program director at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where he led the planning and execution of the vascular surgery service relocation to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. in 2011. His tie to LRMC was, however, ever-present throughout his medical career. “In 2001, I was the surgical chief resident at Walter Reed and I received casualties who were treated at LRMC after receiving severe injuries in Afghanistan,” said Weber during his first remarks as the hospital commander. “When I was deployed to [both Kuwait and Iraq], I can remember the relieved faces of my patients as they learned they were being evacuated to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.” Despite never having been assigned to LRMC before taking command, Weber made it clear that his perspective as the new commander of the

Stephens, left, commanding general for Regional Health Command Europe, stands in the position of honor as the reviewing officer during the May 29 change of command ceremony for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. hospital was shaped by its reputation. “I have stood in awe of this medical center for over 30 years,” he said. “It is my hospital. It is my family’s hospital. And very importantly, it is the joint warfighter’s hospital.” The reviewing officer over the change of command ceremony was Brig. Gen. Ronald T. Stephens, commanding general of Regional Health Command Europe and command surgeon for U.S. Army Europe. Following the ceremonial inspection of troops and passing of the unit colors symbolizing the transfer of authority over the hospital from the outgoing and incoming commanders, Stephens shared his confidence in Weber’s ability to lead. “[Weber’s] career thus far includes a variety of clinical and command billets and operational deployments that have prepared him well for this

new role,” said Stephens. “I am confident his leadership will enable LRMC to continue to ensure U.S. forces in the European theater and beyond are medically ready to meet the demands of the mission.” Weber assumed command from Col. Timothy Hudson, who took command of LRMC in June 2017. Under Hudson’s command, LRMC and its geographically separated clinics conducted more than 1.1 million outpatient visits, saw 48,000 patients in the emergency room, wrote more than 800,000 prescriptions and helped families bring over 1,500 babies into the world. “As the LRMC commander, [Hudson] created and executed a strategic vision that ensured the delivery of professional, reliable and innovative care by a team of 3,000 Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, civilians and local nationals who are all devoted to excellence,” said Stephens. During his remarks to the family, friends, honored guests and hospital staff in attendance, Hudson discussed leadership and provided key takeaways from his time in command. Hudson challenged leaders to own the problems that they face, rather than pass them onto subordinates. He also encouraged them to be engaged leaders who are not afraid to talk, cry and hurt with their teammates. “Take risk, and go to bat for your people,” said Hudson. “Have moral courage. Do not be a coward.” One of Hudson’s primary objectives as the hospital commander was to create a family environment amongst staff, where building relationship was a cornerstone of everyday work life. “People will remember how you make them feel,” he said. “I hope I’ve been successful in sharing my passion and energy with as many of you as possible in the last two years.” In his final words to staff, Hudson

issued a challenge to them, stemming from a conversation he had with a mentor from years past. “Landstuhl, the very name that has transcended the location, city, the medical center or any service, whether Army, Air Force, Navy or Marine working in these hallowed halls,” he said. “It is the embodiment of hope for those who come from theater that they will be repaired, that they will live, and we are their first step back into the world. For their family, [LRMC] represents relief that their loved ones will be okay, and that they are coming home. No other medical center in the entire military health system has such a heavy responsibility to get it right. You must get it right.” LRMC is the largest American military medical center outside of the United States and plays a strategic role as the sole evacuation and tertiary referral center for five combatant commands. LRMC is accredited by the Joint Commission and is the only American College of Surgeons verified Level III Trauma Center outside of the U.S.

Army Veterinarians help Air Force ensure safe MEDEVAC of military working dogs Story and photos by Michelle Thum Regional Health Command Europe Veterinary Medical Center Europe veterinarians trained flight nurses and technicians of the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron on treatment and management of military working dogs last week at Ramstein Air Base. Military working dog training is a new item on the contingency medical readiness program, a yearly review of a flight nurse and technician’s skills, to assure they are up-to-date with their trainings. “In today’s world, military working dogs are essential to carry out the broad majority of our missions,” said Maj. Renee Krebs, a surgeon at Veterinary Medical Center Europe. “We rely heavily on our MWDs for target odor detection, such as explosives and drugs, in combat operations abroad and installation security at home. We need to ensure that flight nurses and technicians know how to properly evacuate them from combat zones and care for them during the flight.” The 86th AES provides airlift support and aeromedical evacuation to the European and African areas of responsibility. This was the first time the 86th AES received the training, which helped flight medics and nurses become more familiar with handling and management, evaluation and treatment, and understanding the vital signs of military working dogs. “We see a move from a clinical to a more battlefield-focused mindset,” said Capt. nurse with the 86th AES. “This also includes MWDs, since we utilize them during our missions. We routinely pick up [human] patients and care for them during the flight to maintain stability of the patient as we evacuate them to immediate medical care, but military working dogs are less common.” In missions to the Middle East, one to two dogs will be evacuated in a four-month period. “Evacuating an MWD is a low-vol-

The training helped the flight care team to gain familiarity with procedures, and to help and assist, rather than hinder, a handler during a flight. The training highlighted the difference between medical care and veterinary care. “Approaching a dog is much different than approaching a human. Learning how to pick up on body

language and nonverbal hints helped a lot,” explained O’Brien. “During flights we check the vital signs of our patients and with the help of hero dog, a doglike mannequin, we were taught how to do that on dogs.” The veterinarians and the 86th AES are looking forward to working together in the future. “Our goal is to draft real-life cases, medical scenarios, in which we show how we operate and have the flight nurses assist us,” Krebs said.

Lt. Col. Kathi Grimm, Chief Nurse with the 86th AES, and Maj. Renee Krebs, surgeon at Veterinary Medical Center Europe, are looking forward to future cooperations.

Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial unveiled at LRMC Story and photos by Alofagia Oney Regional Health Command Europe Since 2003, 83 U.S. service members who died at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center made their last act of service to mankind one of charity, saving 236 lives through organ donation. On May 28, their actions were permanently immortalized during the unveiling of the Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial which stands tall in the LRMC Memorial Garden. In partnership with the Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation, the

organization responsible for coordinating organ donations in Germany, the LRMC intensive care unit staff have worked around the clock to ensure viable organs from patients who passed and identified as organ donors were properly maintained and ready for delivery to a waiting recipient. “All of the 83 organ donors we’ve had at LRMC since 2003 were service members who either died in our hospital from combat wounds sustained in forward theaters, or perhaps from training exercises or other extenuating

Leaders from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Deutsche Stiftung Organtransplantation, the organization responsible for coordinating organ donations in Germany, unveil the new Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial Plaque during a small ceremony in the LRMC Memorial Garden, May 28.

The Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial was unveiled at LRMC, May 28, during a small ceremony in the LRMC Memorial Garden. The inscription on the plaque reads, “In honor of the members of our military, both present and past, here and abroad, who have made organ and tissue donation their last courageous act of service so that others may live long and healthy lives in a free and safe world.”

health issues,” said Army Lt. Col. Sean Reilly, chief of LRMC’s division of medicine and primary point of contact between the hospital and the DSO. Presiding over the ceremony was the LRMC deputy commanding officer, Col. Claude Burnett, who highlighted this partnership. “Today we honor the sacrifices of our fallen brothers and sisters in arms, who, even in death, continued to make a positive impact on our country and allied nations through organ donation,” said Burnett. “We also celebrate the tremendous partnership with the DSO, who through established processes, open communication and the utmost professionalism, was able to transplant over 230 donor organs to local national citizens in need since 2003.” Dr. Ana Paula Barreiros, director of the central region of the DSO, was the guest speaker at the ceremony, and spent time honoring the memories of those service members who saved lives even after death. “Organs f rom young, brave American Soldiers who died for their country [made it] to German patients waiting for lifesaving organs,” said Barreiros. “[These donors were] all very young, and it is important to imagine these young people thinking about life and death, and giving some unknown, ill patient a chance to live.” The organ donations of fallen service members who died at LRMC, and who’s surviving families agreed to donate their organs, has made a positive impact on the lives of the local national transplant recipients, and speaks volumes of yet another partnership between the U.S. military and host nation allies.

“With the existing language barriers, the hospital staff and our coordinators [dealt with] different approaches, different cultures, and different legal circumstances,” said Barreiros. “But, due to your enormous dedication, your patience with us, and your optimistic help, this challenge turned into an excellent cross-border teamwork that led to a good end — saving lives.” The idea of the Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial began with Mr. Gary Foxen, an Air Force veteran and a lung transplant recipient, who heard of U.S. service members dying at LRMC after sustaining injuries in combat; whether through their own volition or by the wishes of their surviving family members, those service members donated their organs to save lives of people in Germany and surrounding European countries. For Foxen, sharing the stories of their acts of selflessness was important and he worked with the organ procurement organization, OneLegacy, to create a long-lasting tribute to the fallen heroes. In 2016, the first Fallen Soldier Donor Memorial was dedicated in the National Donor Memorial at the United Network for Organ Sharing in Richmond, Va. The bas-relief plaque on display at LRMC is the sister memorial showcasing a replica of the hands holding military identification tags, or “dog tags.” The inscription on the plaque reads, “In honor of the members of our military, both present and past, here and abroad, who have made organ and tissue donation their last courageous act of service so that others may live long and healthy lives in a free and safe world.”

Ramstein as well as all of United States Air Forces in Europe email accounts will migrate to the Cloud. Some tenant units began their migration June 5, and the communications squadron announced that the wing should make the transition by June 17. The “your mailbox is full” message is now a thing of the past for most individuals. An Air Force Space Command directive realigned resources to critical priorities and outsourced services like email. “This is an Air Force strategic initiative that will prove we can outsource collaboration tools, formerly known as Collaboration Pathfinder,” said Master Sgt. Many users have already migrated. “The AFNIC has a solid process,” said Hughes. “As of May 24th, 650,888 accounts have been migrated to the Cloud, USAFE is the last major command to migrate.” Users will keep current “@us.af.

Users should see little to no interruption once successfully migrated. “By outsourcing many of our collaboration tools we are able to shift our cyber manpower toward a mission defense concept,” said Hughes. Outsourcing allows the Air Force to direct more attention toward a deterrence and defensive posture. No end user action is required to initiate this migration though it is recommended, as a safety measure, to move your essential mail to a PST. are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, Norway, Switzerland and The Netherlands. For Christians, Pentecost is the feast of the mission of the Holy Spirit and is considered the birth feast of the Church. The event is observed 50 days after Easter, 10 days after Ascension and ends the Easter cycle. The

word Pentecost goes back to the Greek Pentecostal, which stands for the 50th. Because Pentecost is based on Easter, the date changes and is in a period between May 10 and June 13. Originally Pentecost was a Jewish Thanksgiving, the meaning later changed because the Christian community began celebrating Pentecost as the birthday of the Church. According to the Acts of the Apostles, Pentecost is the day when the disciples of Jesus were “illuminated” by the Holy Spirit. The disciples of Jesus — also known as 12 apostles — received the Holy Spirit 50 days after Christ’s resurrection. The disciples were suddenly able to speak several languages and were given the

mission of Christ to preach the gospel. In Germany, the holiday is celebrated with special Pentecostal processions, Pentecostal fires or trees are set up. The Pentecost ox also played an important role in customs. The first time of the year after winter, it was customary to take the cattle to the pasture. For this festive parade, cattle are decorated with flowers, ribbons and cowbells. In Bavaria, people dress in the regional costumes, walk in processions to church and pray for a good harvest. In Frankonia, several hundred horsemen will perform the traditional Pentecostal ride to a nearby church. To this day, Pentecost is associated with certain symbols such as the dove. The

wooden dove decorates the church’s Nave, Pulpit or Font. It orginates in the Gospel of John and symbolizes purity peace. In the Palatinate region, the biggest Pentecostal tradition is the billy-goat march in Deidesheim, which takes place on the Tuesday after Pentecost. This 615-year-old tradition begins at 5:30 a.m. at the Friedrich-Ebert-Platz. A document from Emperor Ruprecht from 1404 shows that Lambrecht, a neighboring city of Deidesheim, is entitled to pasture in the Deidesheim Forest. To keep the entitlement, the city of Lambrecht had to pay with a billy goat. In early times, this was the job of the youngest citizens. For this, the billy-goat guide received bread with cheese and a bottle of wine as nourishment for the trip. Some communities in the Kaiserlautern and Ramstein vicinity celebrate Pentecost or have other events scheduled such as wine fests at Kaiserlautern’s Volkspark, Wachenheim, Oberotterbach, Rohrbach, and Zellertal as well as culinary hikes and tours at Krottelbach and Maikammer. RMS presents two nights of stellar productions Story by Sequinn Lee Photos by David Eldredge Ramstein Middle School The 7th period drama class performed “12 Angry Pigs,” a one-act production written by Wade Bradford, on May 29 In this comical yet surprisingly educational parody of “Twelve Angry Men,” a certain wolf is on trial for blowing down a pair of houses owned by the Three Little Pigs. A jury of swine must now decide if

they will oink in favor of conviction, or declare the wolf not guilty. Throughout the deliberation, most of the angry pigs believe the wolf is big and bad. However, a “non-oinker” is hesitant to convict so the pigs begin to review the evidence and ask some tough questions. Cast and crew members meeting the audience after the curtain call was a highlight after each production. Both performances were directed by RMS Drama teacher, Sequinn Lee.

June 14, 11 a.m. to midnight June 15, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 16. It will feature vendors, craftsmen, knights, noblewomen, Vikings, musicians, jugglers and fire eaters. At the foot of the castle, in a camp, visitors can experience how life was in the various eras of the Middle Ages. Medieval food specialties based on old recipes will be served. Vikings, crusaders, knights and soldiers will present show fights with swords, spears and battle axes. Vendors will sell their merchandise in the yard of the castle, which is about 1,000 years old. Crafters such as basket makers, weavers, salters, bow makers, black smiths, dyers and shoemakers will demonstrate medieval craftsmanship. June 15 around 9:30 p.m., noble people will walk with torches to the castle, where a fire show will be presented with the musicians of the group Ranunculus. Jugglers and musicians will enter-

tain the audience throughout the camp and castle areas on both days. Admission fee is €7 for adults and €4 for children and visitors in medieval clothes. Children shorter than a sword (1.40 meters) are admitted for free. Parking lots are available at the foot of the castle. Obermoschel is located on B420 northwest of Rockenhausen. It is

known as the smallest town in the Pfalz. Moschellandsburg was built in the 12th century. In the Thirty Years’ War (1618 to 1648), the castle was conquered by the Spanish, the Croatians and the Swedish. The French destroyed it in 1689. Worth seeing is the shield wall made of squared stones and the remains of the gate tower, ring wall, horse stables and well.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Day trips to some of Germany’s hidden gems — Part 2

Porte des Allemands (German’s Gate), Metz, France by Thomas Warner Visitors who make the stop at Voelklingen might continue westward across the border to Metz, France. Aside from the well-documented St. Stephen cathedral and another antiquated religious building, St. Pierre aux Nonnains, flea markets, small wineries, bistros and pubs, and a few children-themed

places to let the kids blow off steam are scattered throughout the town. The Porte Des Allemands is a 13th-century, twin-towered structure that once stood in the path of invading forces in the region. It features a walking area that winds through the building and several shops and restaurants are situated nearby. Just blocks from the towers is Eglise St. Maximin, one of sev-

eral churches and noteworthy for its blue-hued, modern stained glass that was installed under the direction of its creator, 1960s artist Jean Cocteau. Castle ruins in Homburg, just a 30-minute drive along A6 toward Saarbruecken, are the best you might have seen, with drawings and plans that show exact layout and floorplans of what used to be there. There are caves that served various purposes and are located underneath the castle complex. Dress warm for the caves are at pretty much a constant cool temperature for exploring in any season and they can give the visitor an idea of ways of life from another time period. There is a fun and spacious park close to downtown with an extremely shallow pond that has a children’s pirate ship at its center. Children can get on tiny boats and use poles to push themselves out to examine the ship. The park also has a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, and large, open fields for volleyball, and other outdoor or ball games. Teenagers and younger kids alike will find this place appealing. Northeast of Kaiserslautern is the Rhine River town of Mainz. It is here that you simply must come before your time is up, for a visit to both

the Gutenberg Museum and to trace Martin Luther’s path to reforming religion into what we know it as today. Taking time out to drive south for 30 minutes and see Worms, where Luther appeared in front of Roman emperor Charles V in high court, might inspire you to seek out more Luther-related spots in German towns north of Frankfurt. Downtown Worms has a walking tour that traces some of Luther’s steps. The city also has castle ruins that are different from castles on the Rhine River hills, as they are set right in the middle of downtown. There is a convenient parking garage area with inexpensive day rates plus many restaurants and shops to fall into. Altstadt is the old town portion of Mainz and a place to find authentic servings of sausage and beer, varying representations of medieval architecture, and lots of walking space for shops, pubs, coffee houses and photo opportunities. A day in Mainz is not enough and it’s probably worth the traveler’s while to book a room somewhere and stretch the experience. The printing press and ancient bible memorabilia take time to get a handle on, so plan accordingly a give yourself time to digest the information.

Explore your new home Great city trips, fun playgrounds for kids, delicious recipes and much more.
