During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the countless women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality, justice, and opportunity in our Nation. We also reaffirm our commitment to advancing rights and opportunities for women and girls in the United States and around the world. We are mindful that we are building on the legacy of both recognized trailblazers and unsung heroines who have guided the course of American history and continue to shape its future.

The full participation of women is a foundational tenet of democracy.

Women — often women of color — have been on the frontlines, fighting for and securing equal rights and opportunity throughout our country’s history as abolitionists, civil rights leaders, suffragists, and labor activists.

Women continue to lead as advocates for reproductive rights, champions of racial justice, and LGBTQI+ equality. Throughout history, these women have opened the doors of opportunity for subsequent generations of dreamers and doers. As community leaders, educators, doctors, scientists, child care providers, and more, women power our economy and lead our Nation.

As first responders and service members, they stand watch over our lives and liberties. As innovators, entrepreneurs, and essential workers in every industry, they represent the very best of America.

But despite significant progress, women and girls continue to face systemic barriers to full and equal participation in our economy and society. Last year, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away a constitutional right from the American people and the ability of millions of women to make decisions about their own bodies, putting their health and lives at risk. Disparities persist in economic security, health care, and caregiving responsibilities, especially for women and girls of color. Those who perform critical work, including those who care for our children and our families, are too often overlooked, underpaid, and undervalued.

equal. My Administration is committed to upholding that idea and to making its promise real for every American.

That is why I created the Gender Policy Council to advance gender equity and equality across the Federal Government. It is why I released the first-ever national gender strategy to promote the rights and opportunities of women at home and abroad, which outlines my Administration’s commitment to equal access to education, economic security for women and families, health care, and freedom from gender-based violence. As we implement the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, we are working to reduce barriers so that women can access new jobs in sectors where they have been historically underrepresented. I have signed historic legislation to ensure equal protection for pregnant women and nursing mothers in the workplace. And I strengthened and reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act, a major milestone in our ongoing efforts to

ensure all people can live free from violence. Finally, in December 2022, I was proud to sign the Respect for Marriage Act and defend the rights of LGBTQI+ and interracial couples.

My Administration will continue to defend reproductive freedom to ensure that all Americans — regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or income — have the ability to make the choices that are right for themselves and their families. I have taken executive action to safeguard access to reproductive care, including medication abortion, help ensure women can receive emergency medical care, protect patients’ privacy and access to accurate information about their reproductive rights, and combat discrimination in the health care system.

I continue to call on the Congress to pass a Federal law restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade so all women in every State have the right to choose.

And my Administration released the first Blueprint for Addressing the Maternal Health Crisis to save lives and

address systemic discrimination that many women face every day in our health care system, including women of color, women in rural communities, and women with disabilities.

Leading our efforts is the most diverse group of women at the highest levels of Government in United States history, including Vice President Kamala Harris and a record number of female cabinet secretaries. Together with the most diverse set of judges ever nominated to the Federal bench — including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson — women are seated at every table where decisions are being made.

This month, as we continue our work to advance gender equity and equality, let us celebrate the contributions of women throughout our history and honor the stories that have too often gone untold. Let us recognize that fundamental freedoms are interconnected: when opportunities for women are withheld, we all suffer; and when women’s lives are improved, we all gain. Let us strive to create a Nation

On, off-base clothes dryer safety Doing laundry is most likely part of your everyday routine. But did you know how critical taking care of your clothes dryer is?

With a few simple safety tips, you can help prevent dryer related issues.

There are two different types of dryers used on-base and off-base depending on your location and type of home. Condensed water and vented dryers. » For condensed water dryers, ensure you empty the condensed water container after every drying cycle. Condensed water can cause health problems in people and animals. Please don’t drink it!! » These dryers work more efficiently in cooler environments, so if possible, try to keep the room nice and cool by opening a window. » For vented dryers, check and clean the flexible hose connected to your dryer for lint accumulation at least once a month.

More safety tips: » Follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions and don’t overload your dryer. » Regularly clean the lint filter. » Never place plastic articles in the dryer. » Clean clothes dryer lint trap after each use.

» Keep the area around your dryer clear of clutter like boxes, cleaning supplies and clothing, etc. » Clothes that have come in contact with flammable substances, like gasoline, paint thinner, or similar solvents should be laid outside to dry first; then they can be washed and dried as usual. » Check the outdoor flap on vented dryers to ensure it is not blocked or covered. » Turn the dryer off if you leave your home or when you go to bed.

If you notice that it takes longer than usual for your clothes to dry, please check your lint filter first, and if this doesn’t resolve the problem, please call our Housing Maintenance Contractor at 06371-463-9510.

Motor vehicles registration update Headquarters USAREUR-AF Registry of Motor Vehicles. We will temporarily halt the issuance of temporary tags to personnel in

the KMC. All temporary tags for Kaiserslautern will be processed through the Kapaun FRS. This change does not affect personnel with “BIR” plates as you must still process through the local Field Registration Station for your community. Personnel in outlying communities will continue to process as previously directed.

t’s time to create memories! When culture and tradition meet modern events, food and drinks, you get the Irish House Kaiserslautern experience. Located off the L395 between Kaiserslautern east direction Sembach, right across from the Barbarossa Hof, it is easy to find and has ample parking. This building dates back to the early 1900s when it used to be a banquet hall. You definitely can’t miss it when you drive by. The outside shows the original sandstone plastering and country-style wooden framework with a tower, gable, pitched roof and leaded windows. It is still under monumental protection today and any type of renovations or changes need prior approval from the city. However, this didn’t stop the owners from doing recent upgrades without losing the luck of the Irish and the charming pub character. From banquet hall to event location and pub in the early 80s, the Irish House surely is part of the local culture and tradition as it is still going strong today.

Walking into to this pub, time stands still. You feel like you are part of the 80s again with rustic, dark furniture, original plank flooring, wooden paneling on the walls, windows with stained glass and stucco ceilings with crown moulding. The fireplace creates a relaxing atmosphere during the colder months where you can sit and enjoy your beverage. Or they have a pool table and dartboard if you prefer a little activity and friendly challenge. When the weather allows it, you can enjoy outdoor seating in their beer garden and beach area.

There is also a stage for outdoor summertime jams.

Now let’s talk food and drinks! The menu at the Irish House does not disappoint. With five taps, you can choose from Pils, Weizen and ciders, or Guiness and Kilkenny. The Guiness here is unique for Germany, because most places use carbon dioxide for their tap which changes the flavor significantly. The Irish House however does it the traditional way with nitrogen, which Guiness fans will taste and appreciate. They have several bottled beers and there is also a huge selection of whiskeys. Whether your taste buds prefer the Irish, Scottish or American kind, you’ll find them all on the menu, along with some scotch.

The pub can seat up to 50 people inside and 80 outside. The concert hall can accommodate up to 250 people. Since 2021 smoking inside the pub is strictly prohibited making it a family-friendly environment to enjoy an early dinner, for example on Thursdays when it’s burger time.

What distinguishes the Irish House from all the other pubs and bars is their large concert hall. It is spread over three levels providing awesome acoustics and perfect sound with an extensive lighting system. There is no musician too big or too small to be on stage here. Women leaders discuss benefits of military service

by David Vergun Department of Defense News In celebration of Women’s History Month, top women military leaders discussed the importance of recruiting and retaining the best and most competent personnel in the military. The leaders spoke at the Military Women’s Memorial in Arlington, VA, March 6.

Coast Guard Adm. Linda L. Fagan, commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, said the Coast Guard of the 1980s was a lot different than what it is today.

“This just speaks to the journey and so many people that have made the opportunity for us here today,” she said.

One of her primary focus areas as commandant, she said, concerns talent and workforce management, making it easier for not only women, but all who want to serve and be able to take advantage of all the opportunities.

Air Force Gen. Jacqueline D. Van Ovost, commander of U.S. Transportation Command, said women have come a long way since they were first allowed to serve 75 years ago.

Restrictions were lifted 30 years ago on women being allowed to fly fighter aircraft in combat and 10 years ago restrictions on women being in ground combat were removed, she said.

“Our progress has been accelerating, but we have a way to go, and we’re working on that,” she said.

Historically, militaries reflected the societies that support them.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the all-volunteer force, she said. The force will continue to evolve to incorporate all talents and demographics of America. And this is especially true today during

the era of global strategic competition.

Van Ovost said we need diversity of thought, experience and capabilities all pulled together, because we’re dealing with hard problems and strategic competition and we need everyone at the table supporting us.

“That’s why we have to continue to recruit and retain talented women and men in our service, capable of thinking creatively, differently, innovating with the technology that we have, so that we can create new concepts and capabilities so that we can remain first and foremost, the most lethal fighting

force in the world,” she said.

Army Gen. Laura J. Richardson, commander of U.S. Southern Command, said we have a way to go to connect with the U.S. population, particularly youngsters, and explain the benefits of service.

There is a wide variety of jobs in the military, many of which would interest young people, she said.

About 72 percent of today’s youth doesn’t know much about the military or opportunities available to them, she said. It’s incumbent on those who serve or have served to get the word out.

single day in the military you wake up,” she said.

Navy Adm. Lisa Franchetti, vice chief of naval operations said March, which is Women’s History Month, is a nice time “to pause and reflect on those pioneers and leaders [who] went before us who were able to work hard, break down barriers and put in place the changes in law, in policy and culture that enabled all of us to be here today,” she said.

The theme of today’s event, she said, is “Beyond Firsts.”

“I am really happy to see us nearing an end of all the firsts,” she said, referring to women

Women help to bring the “critical thinking skills, that we need to be able to be the world’s most formidable fighting force, ready to deter, fight and win whenever the nation needs us to do so,” she said.

All four women discussed how difficult it was three decades ago to serve and to gain respect from male leaders and how they persevered.

US Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz: It’s a small world after all

The U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz truly is a “home away from home” for many.

Serving a U.S. military community with over 10,000 people, you might not realize how “small” the community really is…until you run in to an old high school or family friend at the commissary.

It’s really a ‘small world after all’ for two Dover, Delaware natives, Claude Armstrong and Maurice Evans, both serving U.S Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and living in Kaiserslautern.

Claude Armstrong serves as the Master Planning and Real Property Chief for the Directorate of Public Works. His division manages a portfolio of over 7,000 real property facility assets across sites in Bulgaria, Germany, and Romania. He is responsible for the coordination, facilitation and management of short, mid, and long-range planning and programing for facility repairs, renovations and construction supporting the various missions of U.S Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz.

Maurice Evans serves as the S6 Director, Lead Information Management and Technical Consultant in Information Management for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. In this role, he supervises the Directorate of Information Management and provides Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Information Management support to the installation, including providing technical management and expertise for current and long-range programs. He is the technical representative for coordinating overarching Enterprise Information Technology issues, projects and programs for U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz.

Both graduated from Dover High School in Dover, Delaware, home to the Senators, the High School mascot. Claude graduated in 1983, while Maurice graduated in 1986 –

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Claude: Easy, an architect.

Maurice: Alive, lol! I wanted to be an Air Force fighter pilot, but motorcycle racing was a more attainable goal.

Did you ever think you’d be working and living in Europe?

Claude: No, it wasn’t ever on my radar.

Maurice: Definitely not. My “dream sheet” consisted of all east coast assignments, however my very first Air Force duty station was at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan — followed by over 25 years, collectively, living in Germany!

a seemingly small gap now, but in high school years they were in two different worlds! Claude however, was best friends with Maurice’s older brother, Spencer, and they share memories of Maurice as the younger, um, annoying, but funny kid who looked up to his big brother and his friends.

Dover is the state capital of Delaware. Dover is well known for what was originally ‘Dover Downs’ racing track, but is now the ‘Dover International Speedway,’ a major race car track in the U.S. for Formula One and stock car racing.

It’s also known for Dover Air Force Base, an installation many of Air Force personnel are familiar with.

The capital city of Dover is the host site for many historical state and national events, especially in celebration of Delaware being the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787.

The first time the gentlemen saw each other again after high school was at the Volgelweh Commissary around Christmas time, 2022.

Despite Claude wearing a mask, Maurice could tell that he knew him and called out to him.

Both were extremely surprised to see each other there and started to laugh and reminisce of the “good old days” back home.

Through the conversation, they realized that not only are they both living here in the KMC, but they both also serve U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz and work at Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

We asked the Dover High School alums some questions about their high school/good old days memories and thought it would be fun to share/compare their answers.

Did you play sports or participate in extracurricular activities in high school?

Claude: I ran track as long and triple jumper, as well as a distance runner (1600m and 3200m); in the fall, I ran cross-country.

Maurice: I was a wrestler for all four years as well as serving in the Air Force Junior ROTC program. I

also played little league baseball for five seasons!

What were your hobbies and interests?

Claude: I loved to build models, primarily military models, and dioramas for display with my brother, and Lego creations of all kinds but mostly buildings and houses.

Maurice: Wrestling, baseball and racing my scooter back and forth to school – which helped in my other career in professional motorcycle racing (Maurice won three German/European Supersport 600cc motorcycle racing championships in 2012, 2016 and 2021!)

What was your favorite movie in high school?

Claude: I didn’t have one favorite, but I’d say Chariots of Fire, both Star Wars and The Outsiders.

Maurice: Star Wars, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Eddie Murphy’s stand-up show, Delirious

In the process of reminiscing and catching up, the men discovered that another U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz garrison team member, Greg Williams, Director of Public Works is married to Leonie, who attended the same church in Dover that Maurice attended!

“This really shows how small our world is,” said Maurice.

“Having the opportunity to live, work and play in Europe, plus run into old friends from back home, is pretty cool.”

Biden presents Medal of Honor to Special Forces Soldier

by David Vergun Department of Defense News Army Capt. Paris D. Davis distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty during the Vietnam War. Davis, now a retired colonel, attended a White House ceremony today where President Joe Biden presented him the Medal of Honor.

His Medal of Honor citation was read during the ceremony.

While serving as commander of Detachment A-321, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, during combat operations in South Vietnam, June 17 to 18, 1965, Davis was an advisor to the 883rd Regional Force Company in the vicinity of Bong Son. The company was conducting a nighttime raid against a Viet Cong regional headquarters housing a superior enemy force, according to his citation.

While returning from the successful raid, the regional force company was ambushed and sustained several casualties, according to the citation.

“Davis consistently exposed himself to hostile, small-arms fire to rally the inexperienced and disorganized company. He expertly directed both artillery and small-arms fire, enabling other elements of the company to

reach his position. Although wounded in the leg, he aided in the evacuation of other wounded men in his unit, but refused medical evacuation himself,” the citation states.

Following the arrival of air support, Davis directed artillery fire within 30 meters of his own position in an attempt to halt the enemy’s advance, according to the citation.

“Then with complete disregard for his own life, he braved intense enemy

fire to cross an open field to rescue his seriously wounded and immobilized team sergeant,” states the citation.

While carrying the sergeant up the hill to a position of relative safety, Davis was again wounded by enemy fire. Despite two painful wounds, Davis again refused medical evacuation, remained with the troops, fought bravely and provided pivotal leadership and inspiration to the regional force company, as it repelled several

Viet Cong assaults on their position over a period of several hours, according to the citation.

When friendly reinforcements finally arrived, Davis again refused medical evacuation until he had recovered an advisor under his command who had been wounded during the initial ambush and was presumed dead, the citation states.

not leaving the battlefield himself until all friendly forces were recovered or medically evacuated, per the citation.

“You’re looking at courage in the flesh,” Biden said during the ceremony.

Davis volunteered to serve a country that in many places still refused to serve people who looked like him, Biden said, noting that Davis is an African American.

“Right away, it was clear that Paris was a born warrior. He became an Army Ranger. Then, he jumped at the chance to join the Green Berets, becoming one of the nation’s first Black Special Forces officers,” Biden said.

At the time Davis returned from Vietnam, the country was still battling segregation, Biden noted.

This year is the 75th anniversary of the United States’ first fully integrated armed forces, Biden mentioned. “Davis will still stand alongside the nation’s pioneering heroes.”

The president noted that Davis served for 25 years in the Army, earned a Ph.D. and founded the Metro Herald newspaper in Alexandria, Virginia, which reported on community news and civil rights issues.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and past Medal of Honor recipients attended the ceremony.

NY Guard Soldiers complete French desert commando course Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Alexander Rector New York National Guard Thirty-one Army National Guard Soldiers and one Air Force Airman assigned to Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa completed the arduous French Desert Commando Course Feb. 3.

Twenty-nine of the graduates were New York National Guard Soldiers deployed to the region as part of Joint Task Force Wolfhound, built around the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment. Soldiers from the New York National Guard’s 108th Infantry Regiment and 101st Cavalry Squadron are also part of the task force.

Founded in 1974 in Djibouti by the French army, the FDCC became a routine training requirement for French soldiers stationed in the country. The French army’s 5th Overseas Combined Arms Regiment, which hosted the course, has invited U.S. personnel stationed in Djibouti to participate since 2015.

The French host the course three times a year. When the first course of 2023 was announced, the response from U.S. service members was imme-

diate and overwhelming. More than 100 people competed, with only 35 chosen to participate.

“I thought this course would be a great challenge for myself,” said 1st Lt. Brendan Kalaf, the Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, executive officer. “The ability to be involved with our foreign partners is something that I always knew I wanted to do while being deployed here in the Horn of Africa.”

The course consisted of the French pre-assessment and the commando phase. Before the official course, CJTFHOA conducts a pre-assessment to identify the 35 most physically and mentally fit service members to compete.

U.S. troops completed a Ranger

physical fitness test consisting of pushups, sit-ups and a timed 5-mile run, before heading to the 5th RIAOM base for the French assessment.

After an additional fitness assessment, participants traveled to the French army’s Combat Training Center at Arta Beach, where they completed a ruck run and an intense water obstacle course before beginning the week-long commando training.

Service members were taught knot tying, mountaineering, combatives, and desert survival training during the commando phase.

The commando phase’s culminating event was a rope course where participants had to navigate rope swings, rappel, mountain climb, and cross multiple rope bridges while suspended

high above the ground.

“The hardest part for me was getting over my fear of heights,” said Spc. Adam Fouladi, an infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment. “I really hadn’t done anything like this before, but once I actually got up there and got used to all of the obstacles, I realized I could do this and pushed forward.”

Before taking on the rope course, the troops honed their skills on a three-story tower before heading to the mountainside.

“The training prepares you for the course, but you don’t realize just how high up you’re going to be until you’re actually up there,” said Kalaf, a graduate of the U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School. “The wind is howling in your ears and you’re looking down while crawling across a bouncing one-inch piece of steel high-tension wire more than 200 feet off the ground.”

Kalaf led the U.S. service members participating in the course.

“Once I was labeled the platoon leader, the French cadre told me that in order to be successful, we had to operate as a cohesive unit,” Kalaf said.

Kalaf ensured the troops worked

together and pushed each other to succeed.

“I think they took that advice to heart,” Kalaf said. “Which is why they ended up hitting it out of the park.”

According to Kalaf, the French cadre said the U.S. graduates were among the most successful U.S. platoons in the course in the last nine years.

The 32 U.S. service members who completed the grueling training course earned the prestigious French Desert Commando Badge. For the French army, this is just the desert portion of the training; the full French commando training program includes a jungle, forest and combat phase.

“I wanted to do this course to better myself and make sure I’m more mission-capable,” said Fouladi. “I gained a lot of confidence during this course.

If I ever have to do something like that again, I know I’ll be ready.”

The course acts as a platform for U.S. and French partnership in Djibouti. Members of CJTF-HOA regularly train and work alongside allies, partners and government organizations to achieve a unified effort to improve safety, security and prosperity in East Africa, according to French officials.

The KHS Chapter is a group of students interested in pursuing education past the classroom. We are representing our school at the Educators Rising conference for DODEA Europe.

For the conference, we chose to participate in the storybook competition where we had to teach a lesson to elementary

children through a storybook we created. In two weeks, we illustrated and wrote a story to help kids be safe online. It follows a guinea pig who learns not to share personal information with strangers over the internet. In the end, her mother warns her of its dangers and they build a stronger sense of communication. Once we finished, we were welcomed to Landstuhl Elementary School

to really see how the children would react. We went around to the lovely Kindergarten classes at LES and read to the kids.

They were respectful, great in participation, and approved of our work! They liked the story so much that they asked for the copies we had brought in. Each classroom received a copy and our team left energized and excited to work with the school again.

Story and photos by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Anyone that has moved to Germany will sooner or later hit upon the term “Bremerhaven,” either in conjunction with a vehicle being shipped there or household goods arriving at the port.

Some may have personally traveled to the city at the mouth of the Weser River to pick up or deliver a car. The U.S. Army also utilizes a separate section of the port to bring in equipment and heavy vehicles.

The joint port “BremenBremerhaven” is Germany’s second largest port after Hamburg. One of the eight terminals is the Vehicle Terminal that handles up to two million vehicles a year, including many thousands of DOD members’ POVs arriving from or departing to the United States. In addition to cars and ships, Bremerhaven also has a world of wonders at its “Hafenwelten” (harbor worlds).

Emigration changed the world Another very exciting terminal is the Columbus Cruise center, one of the most modern cruise ship terminals in the world. Ships from around the globe dock there to continue onto voyages in Scandinavia or across the Atlantic Ocean. The terminal also has a long tradition of being one of the busiest ports for emigration to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries and is Visitors can meet researchers at an icy camp in Antarctica.

With a sharp increase of European emigrants seeking their fortunes in the New World in the mid 1850s, the port in Bremen became too small and Columbus Kai was opened in Bremerhaven in 1854.

Millions of European emigrants left the port with hopes and dreams of a better life on the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean and shaped the future of the United States.

Trace your roots at the Emigration Center According to a 2020 census 191 million Americans, making up 57 percent of the population, have European roots. The largest group at 17 percent are said to be descendants of Germans, followed by Irish and Italians.

The “Deutsches Auswandererhaus” (German Emigration Center) opened its doors in 2005 at the exact spot where emigrants began their voyage, the first center in Germany to focus on emigration. The center holds ship manifests of over 7.2 million passengers from 1830 to 1974 and is currently digitalizing the records for further reference. Their destinations were Buenos Aires, Argentina and Sydney, Australia, but over 75 percent emigrated to the United States.

Although not every German departed from Bremerhaven, approximately five million Germans alone set sail bound for the New World, among them over 500,000

from the Rheinland-Pfalz region.

Other emigrants that embarked in Bremerhaven came from The Netherlands, Scandinavia and eastern European countries.

To name a few, Albert Einstein, best known for his theory of relativity, Henry Kissinger, former Secretary of State, and Joseph Pulitzer, famous journalist and politician, who also funded the Statue of Liberty pedestal, are famous emigrants. Isidor Straus, originally from Otterberg in Kaiserslautern County, became coowner of Macy’s department store in New York City.

If you expect this museum to be an old-fashioned library full of illegible, dust covered records, you couldn’t be more mistaken. It is, in fact, a multimedia center with interactive elements that will let you discover the world with new eyes.

For example, you can board an emigrant ship, touch and feel the confinement of a typical windowless cabin full of wooden berths. Third class passengers were put in cabins with five people to a berth and up to 20 berths per cabin. On the other hand, first class passengers were pampered in luxurious suites, with fine porcelain, silver dish ware and dance parties on deck. You can tackle the storms of the rough North Atlantic Ocean on a rolling ship, to finally be greeted by the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island after a twoto-five-week perilous voyage.

Climate around the world If you are not tired of traveling the seven seas and yet ready for more discoveries, a visit to the nearby “Klimahaus” (Climate House) will take you on an overland trip around the world along the eighth longitude.

The ship-shaped center is a mixture between a science center and a theme park and will give you astonishing insights into our planet’s climate, weather and climate change. Under the slogan

“Nine places, five continents, one planet and your responsibility,” the center will take you on an exciting adventure. A series of climatized rooms will lead you to destinations where you can feel, touch, hear and see wonders of our planet.

Visitors can experience the varying climate, temperatures and people telling stories of their daily lives and how they tackle climate change. The journey sets off at Bremerhaven southbound to reach Switzerland, its Alpine climate and melting glaciers. It continues to the small Mediterranean island of Sardinia with five different climate zones. There you can view the world from the eyes (and size) of a grasshopper.

The trip continues on to the barren and hot desert sands of Niger, where Tuareg nomads describe the hardships of their daily lives. Enjoy a stroll in the rainforest in Cameroon and meet its human and many animal inhabitants. The next stop on the journey leads you to the endless ice of Antarctica where you can meet researchers at a polar station.

Traveling northward again a giant sea aquarium welcomes visitors in Samoa to see colorful corals of the South Pacific Reef and then to stop on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska, where Siberia and America meet, and experience a day in the lives of the indigenous Yupik people. A Hallig (a sand

island) in the North Sea will bring you back to Germany where you’re just short of getting wet feet when the tide rolls in.

The Union Community of Ramstein-Miesenbach and the County of Kaiserslautern are organizing a day revolving around family, leisure and tourism on June 24.

The organizers cordially invite any interested groups in the Kaiserslautern Military Community to join in the fun events and present themselves with booths, information, games and displays.

The traditional Lätare Parade, which takes place three Sundays prior to Easter will wind its way through the streets of Landau. This tradition is unique to the region along the Deutsche Weinstraβe (German wine road), so don’t miss out on this extraordinary event in Germany!

When walking your dog near fields or in wooded areas, there are several things to keep in mind. Just recently, five deer were hunted to death by unleashed dogs in the KMC, which under German law is a criminal offense and will lead to legal consequences for the owners.

Germany is a great place to enjoy life with dogs. Germans love their pets, but there are rules for dog owners that Americans may not be aware of before moving to the Kaiserslautern Military Community. The German American Community Office has put together some important information.

Enjoying nature with your dog

spring coming around the bend and many forest animals raising their offspring, it is especially important to ensure that young forest and field dwellers are protected. Some animals, such as wild boar or foxes, can also become extremely protective and dangerous.

Farmers’ and forest paths may generally be used for recreational strolls and to walk your dog. Your dog should be

leashed at all times to be on the safe side and to avoid your dog not reacting to your commands or running out of sight. Beware of any Naturschutzgebiet signs (see photo on the left) that point out nature protection zones.

Be courteous and make sure that your dog does not frighten or jump at joggers, pedestrians or others walking their dogs. Retractable leashes will allow your animal to run and

play, but can be drawn short, if required.

Also, do not let your dog eat or chew any objects found along the way. Unfortunately, there have been cases of dogs being poisoned or injured by pieces of meat, sausage or treats spiked with sharp obstacles.

Enjoy Germany’s fresh green fields and beautiful forests with your dog and make it fun for everyone!

the Romantic Road, it is perhaps an ideal place to start a tour of some of Germany’s most famous sites.

History Würzburg’s history goes back to 10th century when it was founded and became the home, for centuries, of prince-bishops. The Franconia kingdom was created with Würzburg at the center, which was then merged with Bavaria by Napoleon in the 19th Century, something that has not changed to date.

In a 20-minute bombing raid during WWII in 1945, Würzburg was about 80 percent destroyed, especially its city buildings.

Nonetheless, most of the city has now been rebuilt in a more modern manner, though many historic buildings were also restored and can be viewed next to other modernistic postwar structures.

During the reconstruction of Germany that followed WWII, Würzburg was home to a huge contingent of U.S. military. The military base closed finally in 2008, ending six decades of partnership between the United States military and the city. You will find, for this reason, that most residents give returning Americans a very warm welcome.

Must-see sights in Würzburg The city is famous for the Würzburger Residence, considered one of the most beautiful palaces not just in Germany but across Europe. It showcases the best of Baroque art and, as such, is designated a UNESCO world heritage site.

It is also famous for the magnificence of its staircase and a famous piece of top Baroque art which is referenced the world over, a fresco by artist Balthasar Neuman, painted just atop the Staircase by Tiepolo and considered the largest of its kind globally. The entire Residence contains over 300 rooms with a chapel. Entry is free.

The city also has one of the oldest and most well-known churches in all Germany, mostly built way back in the eighth century atop a previous pagan shrine. You will find a number of beautiful and old churches in the city center that are well worth a visit.

You can dip into many of them in between visiting one of the many shops, cafes, bars and restaurants that the Würzburg city center has to offer.

After the residence, perhaps the most important place to see is the Festung Marienburg, offering a beautiful view over Würzburg and the Main River from the walls of the fortress. Entry is free. The castle has a museum accessed at a fee and those who are not conversant with German language can perhaps avoid it; English guides are not usually available.

Julius Spital is another recommended place to view. It is a Baroque hospital with a church and courtyard — the work of

Julius Echter, a prince-bishop. While the grandeur of the building remains intact, inside the hospital is a modern medical center and resting home for the elderly.

While you are there you should try some Frankenwein at the medieval Julius Spital wine cellar, the second largest winery in Germany. Frankenwein is especially notable for its Bocksbeutel bottle which is a very peculiar shape.

You can also access a number of museums in Würzburg such as Mainfränkisches Museum, Museum im Kulturspeicher, Museum am Dom, Martin von Wagner Museum and Siebold-Museum.

If you visit the region in the fall or summer months you will be in time for the Würzburger Weinfests, essentially gigantic wine fairs which are just a fantastic experience. The annual Africa Festival is also held in May or June. It focuses on fascinating

African cultures and is hugely popular.

Eating in Würzburg There are all kinds of restaurants to eat in the city, such as the Schloss Steinburg a couple of miles from the town center and overlooks river Main, offering wonderful views around Marienberg for one of the most unforgettable ambiances, great views and fabulous delicacies at a high end price.

Towards the center of the town are restaurants serving excellent food in some of the most rustic settings at reasonable prices. As a student town, Würzburg has many local eating establishments that are worth checking out, which offer honest food at reasonable prices in very friendly surroundings.

In basically every bar in Würzburg is the Weissbier, a local wheat brew carrying the name of Julius Echter, a 17th century

bishop. For a real treat visit the Würzburger Hofbrau (brewery) and sample a selection of their home-brews. The food here is also delicious and very much in the hearty Bavarian style of traditional German food.

As the start of Germany’s famous Romantic Road, Würzburg is the ideal place to begin your travels towards the Bavarian Alps, passing through many famous towns, such as Rothenburg and world renowned castles, such as Neuschwanstein; the UNESCO World Heritage site, Bamberg, is just 60 minutes away from Würzburg.

Getting there Reaching Würzburg by train from Frankfurt, Munich or Stuttgart is a very easy and a comfortable way to travel. To drive from Wiesbaden or Stuttgart takes around 90 minutes. From Kaiserslautern, the drive takes around 2.5 hours.

Baumholder CYS Job Fair Interested in making a difference for our children in the community? Baumholder Child & Youth Services are hosting an in-person job fair March 21 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Youth Center, Bldg. 8875 on Wetzel Kaserne.
