Ramstein needs your ideas! Story and graphic by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton Jr. 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein leadership wants to hear from you on how to spend winnings — potentially up to $700,000 — from the Commander in Chief ’s Installation Excellence Award competition. “Our Airmen and family members have some great ideas about how we can make our base even better,” said Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We are going to have some money to spend, and we want to hear your ideas on how we should spend it.” Airmen and families may email ideas to 86AW.Installation. Excellence@us.af.mil. “We are excited to hear your ideas, because you’ve earned this

money, and we want to give it back to you,” said Rendon. “You live here.

You work here. You’re the experts, so we want to hear from you on how we

can best use this money.” The Commander-in-Chief ’s annual Installation Excellence Award was established in 1985 by former President Ronald Reagan to highlight innovation and creativity by the people who maintain and operate U.S. military installations. Final results are expected this spring. “Because the winner of the competition receives $700,000 and the runner-up receives $400,000, Ramstein will definitely have some well-earned money to improve an already impressive installation,” said August. “We’re confi dent we will be successful when the results are announced,” said August. “Regardless of the outcome, we are already winners. Please tell us how we can help you. We look forward to hearing from you!”

Gate construction for KMC scheduled until August by 86 Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein officials announced the beginning of phased construction at Ramstein’s gates in order to enhance force protection capabilities and to upgrade infrastructure. The initiative began March 11 at Ramstein’s LVIS gate, which will be closed to the general public until the end of the month. Commercial vehicles requiring an inspection will still be permitted to enter the installation at the LVIS gate, but must exit via Ramstein’s east or west gates. Phased construction will then move to nearly every gate for Ramstein, Einsiedlerhof, Kapaun, and Vogelweh

over the next few months. Ramstein officials ask that you stay informed and to anticipate delays. “We know this will have an impact to our personnel, so please stay engaged and plan ahead,” said Col. Kevin Parker, commander of the 86th Civil Engineer Group. “We understand that it can be frustrating, but this construction will significantly enhance our force protection capabilities at our gates.” After upgrades are complete at Ramstein’s LVIS gate, construction will move to Ramstein’s west gate, scheduled for April 1 to May 25. Ramstein’s east gate will receive force protection upgrades beginning June 17 to Aug 23. Ramstein’s west and east gates will not

close during construction, but the number of entry and exit lanes will be reduced, officials said. Officials stress that altering your personal route to the installation and using a gate that is not under construction may minimize delays. Supervisors may also consider staggering report times and work shifts to minimize local impacts. Ramstein personnel can receive updates from www.ramstein.af.mil, Ramstein’s Facebook page, and from information displayed on marquee signs at Ramstein’s entry gates. More information will be shared as phased construction is completed and shifts to a new area. “We appreciate your patience as we work as fast as possible to complete these important enhancements,” said Parker.

Higher, further, faster: ‘Captain Marvel’ embodies the warrior ethos by Staff Sgt. Jannelle McRae Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Less than one percent of the American population will know what it’s like to serve in the Air Force. However, major motion pictures give the global audience a glimpse into the service’s history of breaking barriers and a taste of its fighting spirit. To ensure an accurate depiction of military service, filmmakers and actors immersed with Airmen from across the Air Force during the filming of “Captain Marvel,” starring Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. Larson’s character is a young Air Force pilot in the late 1980s. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy, she excels in pilot training, flies the F-15 Eagle and moves quickly to the world of test flight. A flight test incident leaves Carol infused with extraordinary powers. “When I graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1982, there were about 150 women pilots in the United States Air Force, and none of them were fighter pilots because it was actually against the law for women to fly fighters,” said Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson during the showcase of “Captain Marvel” at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., March 7. “Today, we have 850 women flying for the United States Air Force and the defense of this country, and about 80 of them are fighter pilots. I’ve talked to Airmen who have helped with the technical assistance on this film and they were pleased that the co-directors had really captured what it means to be an American Airman … that ethos of going higher, further, faster,” she added. Airmen partnered with Marvel Entertainment through the Air Force Public Affairs Entertainment Liaison office, which offered direct access to resources including personnel, aircraft and equipment, technical assistance and military advice and locations. This

ensured the portrayal of the Airmen and missions were plausible and realistic. “Our mission is to project and protect the image of the U.S. Air Force through entertainment media,” said Lt. Col. Nathan Broshear, Air Force Entertainment Liaison Office director. “Major motion pictures, like ‘Captain Marvel,’ provide an incredible platform to educate and inform the American public about the people, culture and heritage of the U.S. Air Force … inspiring the next generation of Airmen.” Ryan Fleck, who co-directed the movie with Anna Boden, expressed his appreciation for every Airman’s professionalism and respect. “Everyone we met in the Air Force was so selfless and giving to our process, and I was really impressed,” he said. “We couldn’t necessarily figure out what an intergalactic space warrior was up to, but we could come to the Air Force and see what it was like to be a pilot. Every detail, every phase of the process was huge, not only for us in the writing, but for Brie as well when she is playing the character … from how she held her helmet to how she walks.”

Additionally, materials collected from Airman Magazine Archives and consultations with Air Force Materiel Command, Edwards Air Force Base, California, and U.S. Air Force Academy historians resulted in period-correct 80s and 90s hardware, uniforms and details. The Air Force’s involvement also impacted character development and storylines. In December 2017, Larson, Boden, Fleck and producer Jonathan Schwartz visited Nellis AFB, Nevada, and spent one-on-one time with

Brig. Gen. Jeannie Leavitt, Air Force Recruiting Service Commander and the Air Force’s first female fighter pilot. “We put Brie Larson in the backseat of an F-16 (Fighting Falcon) so she could experience being in a high performance fighter aircraft firsthand. I think that helped her understand what it was like,” said Leavitt. “I appreciated the fact that they wanted to get the characters to be an accurate portrayal of a female fighter pilot in the Air Force.” Continuing cooperation between the Air Force and Hollywood has resulted in support of hundreds of films and television programs to include “Sully,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Man of Steel,” “Godzilla,” “Lone Survivor” and multiple “Transformers” and “Iron Man” films. “It’s important to know these partnerships are conducted at no cost to the taxpayer — studios reimburse bases for any expenses incurred as a part of the military unit’s participation in selected projects — but our investment of time and energy provides an incredible return on investment for all involved,” Broshear said. “Airmen are able to be a part of cinematic history, ensuring audiences see an accurate portrayal of lives dedicated to excellence, integrity and service before self.”

‘Iconic image’ of NCO found in 86 MXG; honored as Airlifter of the Week by Technical Sgt. Nicholas Filip 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief, highlighted Tech. Sgt. Gabriel Vest as an exemplary NCO, saying he is a model of how an NCO should act and perform their duties. Vest’s performance, professionalism and discipline made him the clear choice as the maintenance expert to brief over 74 representatives from seven allied nations during the African Partnership Flight. In fact, the Rwandan Air Force leadership were so impressed by his presentation, they requested him by name to

be added to USAFE A1/A5’s mobile training team focused on developing Rwandan aircraft maintainers. “I’m just a small piece of the larger 86th maintenance group community,” said Vest. “The real recognition should go to the guys and gals I work with every day.” August said Vest is an iconic image of what an NCO should look like. Rendon encouraged him to continue speaking the truth to leadership — continue being straightforward — and that he looked forward to seeing his career’s future progression. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

Ramstein hosts Women’s History Month by 786 Civil Engineer Squadron Women’s History Month commemorates and encourages the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history such as: • Esther Blake, the first woman to enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1948. • Maj. Gen. Marcelite J. Harris, the first African-American female general officer of the U.S. Air Force and, prior to her retirement in 1997, the highest-ranking female officer in the U.S. Air Force and the highest ranking African-American woman in the Department of Defense. • Col. Jacqueline Cochran, the first woman to fly a bomber across the Atlantic Ocean and the first female pilot to break the sound barrier in 1953.

These are but a few of the incredible women whose accomplishments and contributions to our service and our country are celebrated throughout the month of March. Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed a law authorizing and requesting the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed another law designating the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” To honor Women’s History Month, Ramstein Air Base is hosting the following events:

Over-the-counter medications abused by teenagers

by 86th Mission Support Group An ingredient in more than 140 cough and cold medications, dextromethorphan, or DXM, is a safe and highly effective cough suppressant; however when ingested in excessive amounts, DXM produces physiological effects that include hallucinations, feelings of detachment from surroundings and self, loss of motor control, drowsiness, rapid heartbeat and vomiting. The significance of over-thecounter medication abuse has been highlighted locally through recent incidents where adolescents were found to have consumed large amounts of OTC drugs containing DXM. Risks to abusers are increased because medications that contain DXM also have expectorants, pain relievers, and antihistamines. Overdoses of these ingredients can produce additional side effects such as liver damage, coma, and death. With prolonged abuse users may become paranoid, delusional, and psychotic. These effects can remain weeks after the discontinu-

and substances, assessing current and projected consequences, advising on response measures and assisting with requests for additional support,” Balderas explained. “During this exercise, we are partnering with the garrison fire department to improve training, tactics and procedures for interoperability and best practices to further support garrison response operations.” Their expertise is critical when garrison firefighters respond to an incident involving hazardous materials. CST members have the ability to survey the scene and collect samples to test at an on-site mobile laboratory. The team’s expedient response and testing, determines what the hazardous material is comprised of and how to mitigate it safely — saving time and possibly lives. The team can

also advise garrison firefighters with decontamination procedures at the scene, making the training valuable for both teams. “It’s important to quickly verify what type of hazardous material is at the scene — for instance, if we determine the substance to be a chemical that’s highly reactive to water, firefighters may have to use foam to decontaminate people and mitigate the hazard at the scene,” said 773rd CST Commander Lt. Col. Eric Samaritoni. “This information could be critical for the incident commander to make informed decisions.” Grawert agreed with the commander. “Preparedness is the key, because these type of incidents can happen at any time. Our teams working together can save time and help lessen the dangers of the situation,” he said. USAG RP Fire Chief Marshall Fiedler said enabling our allies through partnership and training is important within Rheinland-Pfalz. “Assisting our community partners inside the gate as well as outside is vital. The 773rd is a tremendous force multiplier for our hazardous material response capability. Their training and expertise is second to none,” he said. “This particular training session’s focus was to review the decontamination capabilities of each unit and discuss procedures for personnel, tool and equipment decontamination. They are an impressive group of motivated Soldiers, and we look forward to continuing to develop our partnership.”

Although the instances are rare, decontaminating victims during crisis situations do happen, said Andreas Grawert, USAG RP assistant fire chief. “This is not something that we do in our every-day jobs,” said Grawert, a 33-year fire department veteran. “But we are prepared to immediately respond to incidents involving hazardous substances and provide decontamination of personnel at the scene, if needed.” The event also provided cohesion between the garrison’s three main fire stations that had the tough task of constructing three large tents and setting up decon areas and hazardous water/material containment as one team. The training was a great opportunity for them to work together, Grawert said. “Depending on the severity of the situation, more than one fire station

Currently, three installations — Baumholder, Germersheim and Miesau Army depots — have this capability, but all garrison firefighters need to know how to set up the tents and equipment,” he said. “This helps them become one team by working together, as well as with the 773rd CST.” The CST is a specialized unit that has the ability to quickly respond to chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear incidents within the U.S. European Command area of operations, said First Sgt. Ramstein wraps up Exercise Operation Varsity 19-01

U.S. Air Force first responders assess the scene of a simulated aircraft crash during Exercise Operation Varsity 19-01 on Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 27. 86th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighters responded immediately to the scene to exercise their response capabilities.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The giant voice system echoes throughout the installation. The children running around the house hear only one phrase, “EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE.” As the kids echo the bits and pieces of what they understood to each other, they begin to mimic exercises, by running up and down the stairs in their house. While it might be all fun and games for the kids, their parents are out and about, hard at work. The first iteration of Exercise Operation Varsity wrapped up March 1,

after a jam-packed week of training. “It has been an amazing opportunity to see the entire wing, across all seven groups, and four different countries, come together to participate in the largest readiness exercise ever,” said U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “We got to do an entire year’s worth of inspections required by Air Force Instruction in a five-day period. It doesn’t get any better than that for the entire team,” said August. Base agencies on Ramstein and Vogelweh Military Complex, fired on all cylinders to push their Airmen throughout the week.

Members of the 86th Security Forces Squadron respond to a simulated active shooter during Exercise Operation Varsity 19-01 on Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 26. Shortly after the members apprehended the suspect, more security forces members arrived to sweep the entire building.

“We learned a lot in this exercise,” said August. “We have a tremendous group of soloists who are masters at what they do. Whether it’s security forces members with their M4, firefighters with their fire engines, or fuels Airmen with their fuel trucks, you are amazing at what you do. But what we learned though, is that we have a little bit of work to do to come together as an orchestra.” Team Ramstein responded to simulated events like a mass casualty event, an aircraft mishap, an active shooter, and a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive attack. “Regardless of the circumstances

and what we put our Airmen through, they outperformed what we expected of them. We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of the team,” said U.S. Air Force Command Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th Airlift Wing command chief. The first iteration of Exercise Operation Varsity may have come to an end, but the second iteration is well underway to be held in May. “You get a sense of pride that you put 100 percent out on the field and delivered results,” said August. “We did some amazing things, but just wait for the next one, we’re just going to bring even more.”

Career Summit brings military community, civilian employers together by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz From military relocations to constant exercises and deployments, being on the move is a way of life for service members and their families. So, no wonder it can be difficult to network and form professional relationships for employment after leaving the military or relocating as a military spouse. That’s where the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes European Career Summit comes in — to help transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses connect, collect resources and build career networks to find meaningful employment in the civilian sector. HOH will conduct 26 career summits to include three in Europe at U.S. Army garrisons Italy, Bavaria and Rheinland-Pfalz in conjunction with each garrison’s Army Community Service Employment Readiness programs and Soldier For Life — Transition Assistance programs. This year’s USAG RP career summit takes place April 3 and 4 at Armstrong’s Club, Vogelweh Housing, and is open to all service members within 24 months of transitioning from the military, veterans and military spouses. During the two-day event, representatives from business and nonprofit organizations will provide employment training, networking opportunities and a career fair to the military community. “These are regional events that multiple military communities should be able to attend,” said Lew Lewis, USAG RP SFL-TAP manager. “This is an opportunity for attendees to plan, gather resources, connect and create professional relationships.” Some of the organizations at the summit will include the Veterans

Administration, education office, SFLTAP and local and national employers, Lewis continued. “This event creates synergy, so people feel like they can take action after attending.” There were 81 job offers extended at last year’s hiring event that hosted more than 360 transitioning service members and job seekers, said Tim Siebeneck, USAG RP Army Community Service Employment Readiness Program. “Although it was terrific that some attendees walked away with employment offers, not everyone will,” he said. “If people can walk away with updated resumes, more knowledge or new resources from this event, it will enhance their ability to find employment or make their transition from the military smoother.” Recently, the name of the event changed from Transition Summit to Career Summit “to illustrate how career planning is a process, not an event. This is a planning process peo-

ple need to work through to make their next career successful,” Lewis said. “The name change is more inclusive to promote military spouse and veteran involvement at the events.” Day One of the summit is all about spouses with a Military Spouse Employment Symposium hosted by the Military Officers Association of America. Spouses will also have an opportunity to network with human resources experts and hiring managers to gain more career insight and knowledge. Day Two, everyone is invited to attend the career-planning workshops, receive professional network coaching, obtain an employment headshot and attend the career fair that offers oneon-one discussions with HR experts and hiring managers from nationallevel employers. It’s a lot of information to take in, especially for people transitioning from the military, said Lewis, who retired

Hiring managers from major worldwide companies engage one-on-one with transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses at last year’s Career Summit. This year, attendees can gain valuable insight at planning workshops, résumé briefings and have a professional head shot taken at the 2019 European Career Summit in Kaiserslautern April 3 and 4 at Armstrong’s Club, Vogelweh Housing. and transitioned from the Army in 2007. “There are a lot of career and employment resources out there, but we are finding that it’s sometimes difficult for people to connect with those resources or they don’t do an effective job of managing them,” he explained. “The value of coming to this event is the availability of subject matter experts, who can help service members, veterans and military spouses navigate the landscape.” Schedule of events: APRIL 3 • 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. — On-site registration for Military Spouse Employment Symposium and LinkedIn photos • 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Military Spouse Employment Symposium • 5 to 7 p.m. — Networking reception for employers and all job seekers APRIL 4 • 8 a.m. — On-site registration • 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Career-planning workshops, employer panel discussion, industry briefs • 1 to 2 p.m. — Individual coaching for resumes, interviews, LinkedIn • 1 to 4 p.m. — Career fair with national and local employers

“This is a great opportunity for people to network, sharpen skills, obtain resources and ask questions to create a career plan. The more armed with information they are, the more able they will be to find meaningful employment and contribute to society in a positive way,” Lewis concluded. “Helping them, whether they are a military spouse or a transitioning service member, create a positive impact in the civilian employment sector is the best way we can say, ‘Thank you for your service.’”

FINRA offers free financial counselor accreditation to military spouses by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Now through April 19, military spouses can apply for the opportunity to earn a free financial counselor accreditation to help them find employment at any military installation or in the civilian sector. The FINRA Foundation Military Spouse Fellowship Program offers this career-enhancing credential to military spouses so they may in turn provide financial counseling and education to fellow members of the military community. The program provides a clear pathway for participants to obtain an Accredited Financial Counselor designation, said Jennifer Chambers, a Baumholder military spouse who is currently enrolled in the program. “The fellowship provides participants with textbooks, an exam study guide and an online webinar review course. The curriculum is comprehensive and has given me a broad understanding of financial issues that families regularly encounter,” Chambers said. Chambers and her family are moving back to the States this summer, but she’ll be able to take her AFC designation with her to pursue career opportunities at their next location. “I am hopeful that the skills and knowledge I have gained from the program will enable me to find suitable employment,” Chambers said. “In the future, I hope to work as an accredited financial counselor and educator within the military community.” Alicia Hernandez, a Kaisers lautern military spouse, is also enrolled in the program and hopes to gain future employment as a financial counselor with Army Community Service after she

receives her certification. “The accredited financial counseling certificate earned from this course will help me break into the financial counseling field, which is what I am hoping to do. The volunteer hours that are required with the program will also give me the experience and background to be able to work with individuals in regards to their finances,” Hernandez said. “With each Permanent Change of Station move, military spouses often have to reinvent themselves in regards to their career,” Hernandez said. The more skills military spouses can add to their resumes, the more it helps with their career searches, she explained. The AFC designation is a gateway for military spouses to have a flexible and portable career while their Soldier or Airman serves on active duty, said Kristin James, Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program manager and accredited financial counselor. Two members of the ACS Financial Readiness Team are fellowship alumni. James said: “One of those spouses has worked in the industry for over eight years across three PCS moves because she obtained the AFC certification.” “Obtaining the AFC certification takes time and effort to pass the national exam and to build the necessary counseling hours, but it’s an investment in yourself and it can definitely pay off,” James concluded. Since it began, the FINRA Foundation Militar y Spouse Fellowship Program has provided more than 1,530 military spouses the opportunity to earn the AFC certification. Those interested in applying for the 2019 fellowship must submit applications no later than April 19 at http://www. militaryspouseafcpe.org/application.

Public Health Command Europe builds interoperability with Polish counterparts Story and photos by Michelle Thum Regional Health Command Europe Public Health Command Europe’s Entomological Science Program invited the Polish Armed Forces for a joint mosquito surveillance training at the PHCE Headquarters March 6 to 7. Five Polish officers from the Epidemiological Response Centre attended the training which covered mosquito biology and military history; medically important mosquitoes of Poland; trapping types and techniques; and developing a vector disease response plan. Not only did the ERC exchange knowledge and expertise within the entomology service but also the preventive medicine services. The cooperation with the ERC of the Polish Armed Forces started last year while preparing for a tick surveillance mission in preparation for Saber Strike 2018, a U.S. Army Europe-led cooperative training event that is designed to enhance readiness and interoperability with allies and regional partners. During the exercise, PHCE’s Entomological Science Program discussed the possibility of collaboration and assisting the ERC with setting up the first ever Polish military run mosquito surveillance program, which led to the development of this training event. “This type of training event touches on every line of effort of the Entomological Sciences Program,” said Col. Rebecca Porter, PHCE Commander. “We are assisting and collaborating with our NATO public health partners to encourage cross talk and unify efforts between our organizations and ultimately increase risk assessment and awareness in our stakeholders.” The ERC of the Polish Armed Forces is a specialized unit responsible for biological threat countermeasures and medical intelligence. It is part of the Military Medical Service Division under the Inspectorate of Branches of

the Polish Armed Forces. The ERC comprises mobile and stationary elements, to include a mobile laboratory to conduct expeditionary field confirmation of biological threats. “The collaborations are favorable as American forces move forward situating themselves in the Polish footprint,” said Maj. Amanda Cline, PHCE Chief of Entomology Services. “Additionally, Eastern Europe has higher risks of vector-borne diseases like tick-borne encephalitis. I put together the mosquito surveillance training to familiarize the Polish forces with our techniques and to support our allies. In the future

Polish officers set up a tick trap as part of their training.

we hope to collaborate in common goals, exercises, and preventive medicine surveillance.” This collaboration builds PHCE’s interoperability with NATO allies and opens doors to future partnerships. “The cooperation with PHCE will leverage our skills and capacities in the area of vector-borne disease control which is highly beneficial for our footprint,” said Maj. Lukasz Krzowski, Polish chief of fixed laboratories. “We hope to have joint workshops in laboratory activities such as pathogen identification from vectors and environmental sample processing in the future to exchange expertise and familiarity with foreign procedures.” Moving forward, PHCE will continue to foster their relationship with their Polish counterparts and other allies and partners. Later this year, PHCE representatives will attend an international scientific conference where they will be able to share and expand knowledge on epidemiology between the Polish, Slovakian, Czech and American uniformed services.

Saving on your electric bill By FindItGuide.com We live in a day and age where everyone is trying to save a dime. It would be nice if you got a raise when you wanted, but those are not always guaranteed. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a way to get more money in the bank while making the same income? Well look no further than your own house or apartment. Following some of our easy tips can mean you are paying considerably less on electric, saving you money! Germany is among the countries with the highest prices for electricity in Europe, according to Clean Energy Wire (February 2018), so being efficient with your power consumption is even more critical if you are looking to save a few euros every month. In 2018, the monthly energy bill for a family of three is 85.80 euro according to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries. Compared to 1998, this is a 32% increase in cost. Keep in mind that Germans in general were

considered #1 in the world for energy efficiency (American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy), so unless you are practicing their level of efficiency when it comes to your home, it is likely your bills are much higher just because you are less efficient with regard to saving energy. “Germany is a prime example of a nation that has made energy efficiency a top priority,” ACEEE Executive Director Steven Nadel said. With considerably lower power costs in the states, it is easy to fall into a less than strict energy-saving strategy when it comes to your home. Now that you are stationed in Germany, you may want to rethink how you do some things when you get home. Here are a number of ways to save with very little effort: Turn off unnecessary lights Turning off a couple 100 Watt bulbs for two hours per day over the course of a year results in substantial energy savings

Take shorter showers Hot water is expensive, especially if you heat with electric. If you and your spouse reduced showers a minute each, that would be 12.16 hours less you are heating a year. Tip: Try turning off the water when soaping up to save more! Turn water off when shaving, washing hands or brushing teeth Unplug electronics when not in use Appliances and electronics can use up to 10% of an average household’s annual electricity use. Tip: Unplug unused power inverters since these units continue to run when plugged in. Unplug your DVR or Video Streaming Device Turn off your DVR, Apple TV or other devices when you’re on vacation or away for periods of a day or more. Purchase oil at the right time If your house uses oil heat, buying

oil at the right time of the year can save you big as prices rise and fall, especially if you have large holding tanks. Close your shutters If you have roladens, use them every night to conserve heat. Use a clothes drying rack Considering how long dryers take that are made in europe (due to energy efficient requirements), a drying rack is a good alternative and doesn’t take much longer. Add a towel to your dryer That’s right! Put a towel in each load to help soak up the water. If you’re doing seven loads a week this could save you significant money at the end of the year. Adjust your refrigerators Keep your fridge and freezer at optimal temperature. For your fridge this is between 2°C and 3°C and your freezer should be at -18°C. Photo by Dima Zel / Shutterstock.com

. t P S a f d o d y y ' r s o Da y t s i H Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated March 17 in honor of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped on foot but returned around 432 to convert the Irish to Christianity. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Many legends are told about him, for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. It was emigrants, particularly to the United States, who transformed St. Patrick’s Day into a largely secular holiday of revelry and celebration of all things Irish. Cities with large num-

bers of Irish immigrants, who often wielded political power, staged the most extensive celebrations, which included elaborate parades. Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has colored its river green to mark the holiday. Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green,” sporting an item of green clothing or a pin in the shape of a shamrock, the Irish national plant. Today, sometimes even beer is dyed green to celebrate the day. Although some of these practices eventually were adopted by the Irish themselves, they did so largely for the benefit of tourists.

THE GREATEST BRITAIN ROAD TRIP PART 5: HADRIAN’S WALL

Photo by Dave Head / Shutterstock.com

Story and photos by Leonie Milde MilitaryInGermany.com We continue north to Hadrian’s Wall. The former Roman frontier, and perhaps the most famous of them all, ‘protected’ the Roman empire for 300 years starting in AD 122 when the emperor Hadrian (no need to explain the wall’s name now, is there?) was reigning over it. The very popular long distance walking trail stretches across 84 miles from coast to coast but there are plenty of opportunities for short or day hikes along the way, all of which come with breathtaking views. The wall used to be 10 feet wide and 16 to 20 feet tall but in many places there is not much more than a foot or less left. Nonetheless, just the thought of this massive construction having stood where you are standing all those years ago is quite impressive in itself. You can also find the remains of Roman houses and forts along the way.

Hiking The full hike starts at Wallsend on the east coast of England and ends in Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. Of course you can also start in the west and head east. Some hikers skip a few miles by starting in Carlisle. The amount of days it will take varies on how many miles you are looking to hike in a day but the average is about

8 with 4-6 hours of walking in a day. Hillwalktours has a handy potential itinerary to help you plan your adventure. There is even an option to have your baggage transported to your accommodations so you only need to bring a small backpack on your hike without the stress of packing as lightly as possible for your trip. Hadrianshaul starts at £7 per bag per daily transfer.

There are a few stretches where you can actually walk on the wall. Since we only had 2 days in the area, we didn’t hike the wall but went on a circa 3-hour walk from our hostel to Housesteads and took a bus with the number AD 122 back to the hostel. Birdoswald Roman Fort This visitor center has an insightful exhibition on the wall’s history and exhibits the longest standing stretch of the wall as well as other Roman artefacts. Birdoswald is one of 16 forts along the wall, though this is the bestpreserved one. The family-friendly site is owned by English Heritage, admission costs £8.30 per adult. Vindolanda & Roman Army Museum The Roman Army Museum consists of three different galleries; one on the Roman Army and its empire in general including the different ranks, roles

and armors while the second gallery focuses on the work at Hadrian’s Wall and the third highlights the daily life of the multi-cultural army on the site. A 3D movie will transport you back in time and let you experience the wall as it would have looked 2000 years ago. Vindolanda shows the history of the Roman reign with outstanding historical artefacts including the wooden Vindolanda writing tablets, the oldest surviving handwritten documents in Britain. Military buildings, stores, shops, houses and two bath houses can be explored thanks to more than 40 years of active archaeology.

Where to Stay YHA has a hostel right next to the wall, The Sill, but there is also a hotel, The Twice Brewed Inn, right next to it. Accommodations in Carlisle are a great option as well. For all the little towns in between, I suggest checking out booking.com or airbnb.com. Camping and heated bunks are also an option. Hillside Farm bunk barn and B&B in Burgh by Sands near Carlisle is a beautiful working farm with private rooms and bunk beds. It’s pretty much in the middle of nowhere and you will have to brake for cows during the drive but it’s as idyllic as it gets and I even got to feed the chickens, which decided the 5 star rating for me. Bonus: they have a super cute dog, Roy who has perfect fur and watched the sunset with me so it’s definitely one of

the top places I stayed at maybe ever. Where to Eat Carlisle is the biggest city in the area and perfect for any big city needs like shopping or dining out. Foxes is a little independent café offering delicious coffee, hearty breakfasts and lunches. Hell Below is a vegan-friendly restaurant with great cocktails and a delicious lunch and dinner menu. House of Meg in Gilsland is close to the wall and has excellent scones and tea as well as a cozy outdoor seating area. The Twice Brewed Inn also offers drinks and dinner. Don’t underestimate the museums’ tea rooms as well for they always have excellent sandwiches with mainly locally sourced ingredients.
