US, French Airmen build trust in the skies over France
A U.S. Air Force C-130J Super Hercules assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, flies through the skies over Orleans, France, March 19. French aircrews flew on U.S. C-130Js to develop their capability with the new model aircraft. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Lindsay Hallford, 86th Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion C-130J engine mechanic, right, walks alongside U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Nicole Merriss, 86th Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion craftsman, left, and U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Ariel Houser, 86th Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion apprentice, middle, on the flight line at Crete Naval Base, Greece, March 8. The team completed a propeller swap on a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft.
Story and photo by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs For the daily life of maintainers, getting called to work at a moment’s notice is routine. Not only are they specialists in aircraft maintenance, they are also specialists in dealing with the unexpected. On March 8, Tech. Sgt. Lindsay Hallford, Senior Airman Nicole Merriss, and Airman First Class Ariel Houser, got the call to fly out of Ramstein Air Base, to perform maintenance on a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft that broke down at Crete Naval Base, Greece. The Maintenance Recovery Team was notified that they would be arriving in Greece on a
C-130J within 24 hours. As usual, they were ready to go. “We flew to Crete to repair a C-130J aircraft and make it mission capable again,” said Hallford, an aerospace propulsion C-130J engine mechanic. “We had to remove and replace the affected propeller assembly.” The team arrived at the naval station’s flight line just before dawn, and wasted no time getting to work. The hours rolled by as the maintainers worked into the night, overcoming unforeseen obstacles and adapting with precision and skill. “The aircraft is equipped with an anti-ice system that keeps ice from See TEAM, Page 2

ORLEANSBRICY AIR BASE, FRANCE
Members of Team Ramstein traveled to Orleans-Bricy Air Base, France, to conduct C-130J Super Hercules flying training with the French air force for an off-station training March 18 to 19. Pilots and loadmasters from the U.S. and French air forces flew on each other’s aircraft to familiarize themselves with the similarities and differences in their operating procedures. “One of the big things is that France is one of our partner nations,” said Capt. Christopher Espinosa, 37th Airlift Squadron executive officer. “We don’t get to train with them a lot. Being able to come out here and build a relationship that we can foster and train further in the future is an amazing opportunity.” The French air force 2/61 Transport Squadron recently started the transition
from their aging C-130H Hercules models, and began training on their newly acquired C-130J models in early 2018. “For me specifically, I am training to become a multi-element flight lead and need to fly with three aircraft,” said Espinosa. “For us to be able to fly out two U.S. aircraft, and for the French to support a third, is an awesome training opportunity. Furthermore, we’re able to interfly with them, they are able to fly on our aircraft and see how we operate. We can provide some training for them, for this trip specifically, we trained on cargo delivery system procedures as they begin to develop their capabilities with the same aircraft that we have.” This training marked the first joint C-130J training for both nations, working together and developing relations along the way. TEAM from Page 1 forming on the propeller in cold and icy conditions. The number one propeller on the aircraft had an anti-ice failure with wiring that had burned through the bottom of one of the propeller blades,” described Hallford. Replacing the C-130J propeller was no small feat. The replacement propeller had to be precisely placed back onto the aircraft while hanging from an industrial crane. The utmost care was required while handling such a massive and integral part of the aircraft. “The most satisfying part of my job is surpassing my limits,” said Houser, an aerospace propulsion apprentice. “Maintenance isn’t something that comes very easy to me, so being able to accomplish new tasks and learn new information about the work I do makes me feel more a part of the team,” Houser continued. The responsibility of the maintainers stationed at the 86th Airlift Wing is crucial. Without maintainers, military aircraft would have a much harder time leaving the ground, let alone, staying in flight. “Knowing that you had a part in getting a crew to or from their mission really puts the importance of maintenance into perspective,” said Hallford. Swapping out the propellers on the C-130J at Crete was not just about the plane, it was about the Airmen on that plane, who needed the plane repaired so they could return home. The maintenance crew was the determining factor on how soon the Airmen aboard could see their families again. “The most satisfying part of my job is seeing the planes I work on fly,” said Merriss, an aerospace propulsion journeyman who specializes in working on C-130J engines. The following morning, after only 15 hours had passed from their initial arrival in Greece, the MRT was able to partake in the most satisfying part of their job. They watched from the flight line perimeter as the propellers on the C-130J roared to life, mov-
ing in perfect motion. To them it was just another day, but to the untrained eye, what they had accomplished was significant. Fixing the C-130J aircraft and ensuring that other fellow Airmen could return home, was a great way for the MRT to spend international women’s day, March 8. “The most empowering part of working in this male dominated career field is finding that my identity as a female doesn’t hinder my ability to outperform the guys,” stated Merriss. “I have only found acceptance and respect in this career field so far. At the end of the day, the guys just want to work with someone who is competent and hardworking which is exactly what I am.” Hallford, Houser and Merriss were all asked what advice they would give to young women wanting to enter a male dominated career field. “My advice for a young girl aspiring to be in a male dominated career field? Male dominated schmale dominated! Forget about gender,” Merriss advised. “Focus on your goal and go after it like your life depends on it. There’s no invisible glass ceiling holding you back. The only thing that’s keeping you from reaching your goals is you.” Hallford echoed similar sentiments, “Focus on your training, your technical expertise, your work ethic and your professionalism. The rest will fall into place and you will quickly realize that it doesn’t matter if you are the only woman or 1 of 50 women.” “I would tell [young women] that thick skin goes a long way,” said Houser. “Maintenance for example, is a culture of its own. There are going to be days that make you question what the heck you are doing — but let’s be honest, I think we experience that in almost any career field. If this is what you want, go for it. Put in the hard work and reap the rewards.” With the mission done, the team loaded the aircraft and headed back home to Germany. In the end it was just another day in the life of an aircraft maintainer.

424 ABS fuels manager gets first place recognition in Army digital photography contest by Jessica Marie Ryan Installation Management Command Europe
CHIÈVRES, BELGIUM Liking photography is an understatement for Air Force Tech. Sgt. Daisaku Dixon. He loves photography, he said, because it allows him to become a story-teller as he captures his favorite moments while living in the Benelux. Dixon’s photo “Wanna Race” won first place in the 2018 U.S. Army Digital Photography Contest’s “Still Life” category in the active-duty personnel division. The fuels manager for the 424th Air Base Squadron at Chièvres Air Base, Belgium, Dixon heard about the contest from his wife Michelle who encouraged him to submit entries. For Dixon, it was the first photography contest he participated in, and he debated on submitting the photo which received top recognition. The photo, which features race goggles on a cloudy day in Tongeren, Belgium, was inspired by his friend from a deployment. “The only reason why I even snapped the photo was due to an old friend from a deployment in 2011,” said Dixon. “His name is Jordan Parkey, and I took a picture of him wearing similar goggles on a bus we were all piled on one afternoon [during the deployment]. I immediately told him about this picture and informed him that I was still inspired by his goggles he wore that day.” Capturing moments Dixon’s passion for photography began around age 13. He signed up for a photography class and started shooting photos with a Pentax SLR on 35 mm film. In the class, he first focused on black-and-white photography and learned how to develop photos in a darkroom and create film rolls. He then transitioned to digital photography and now shoots with a Canon 7D. What Dixon loves about photography is his ability to tell a story. “I’m allowed to change the photo into anything I want or can within the capacity of its parameters,” said Dixon. “It’s like a new canvas with every snap of the camera. I get to either keep the image more in its true state or alter it as much as I want.” Living in the Benelux is a source of inspiration for Dixon. He said that there are always unique opportunities to document and capture local festivities and historical architecture. He encouraged aspiring photographers to explore the local area and “find
something to make interesting.” “Take anyone with you, absorb something new, capture it so that it can possibly either bring you joy in the future or joy for someone else when you share it,” he said.
The U.S. Army Digital Photography Contest is conducted annually by Installation Management Command’s G9 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Directorate to encourage U.S. military personnel
and families to capture their favorite views, moments and adventures from all across the world. To learn more about the contest and see all winning photos, go to https://www.armymwr. com/digitalphoto.

by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron received two checks totaling $71,200 from the 86th Airlift Wing Innovation Office on Ramstein Air Base, March 11. Separate teams within the 86th AES pitched ideas and procedures to improve work center operations while also cutting costs and saving the Air Force money. Members of the Simulation and Technology Element received $63,500 for their plan for a Simulation Learning Center Certification. To receive the
certification, the element will buy an audiovisual system enabling them to record and analyze clinical simulations learning activities. The training platform will also receive upgrades such as airline seating, paint supplies, and LED lighting strips. “It is important for our aeromedical evacuation crew members to train how they ‘fight,’” said Maj. Jeremy Hicks, 86th AES clinical nurse specialist. “Our clinical simulation training is a proven platform for enhancing health care provider competency, skills, and teamwork, thereby improving patient outcomes. Devon Bernal, 86th AES aeromedical evacuation technician. “Our initiative, once implemented, will greatly assist our
crews in completing the mission by making our resources more accessible and saving space.” Airmen submitting innovative ideas enable the force to constantly adapt and improve in an ever changing environment. Members of the 86th AES understand this and plan to tackle every challenge with innovative thinking. “The squadron innovation funds won’t go away, so we will continue to bring new and innovative ideas to the table to improve our work centers,” said Col. Ronald Jones, 86th AES commander. “Our future innovations will continue to improve processes to save time, money, and overall save lives.”
Air Force Expeditionary Center commander visits 521 AMOW units by Crystal Young 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Maj. General John Gordy, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center commander, and U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Kristopher Berg, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center command chief master sergeant, concluded a two-week visit to the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing, visiting nine squadrons located on installations across Europe and southwest Asia. “It was evident from our visit that the Airmen, civilians, and local nationals in this wing are extremely capable at executing the mission,” said Gordy. “It’s easy to take the Global Air Mobility Support System for granted because the 521st AMOW makes it look so easy but the truth is, it’s really hard work.” Gordy and Berg witnessed the
mobility mission in action, received hands-on demonstrations of innovative programs the wing has developed and were able to honor outstanding Airmen for their work. They were also able to visit with several host nation and key installation leadership teams to thank them for their support of the Air Mobility Command mission. “It was important for Maj. Gen. Gordy and Chief Berg to see first-hand the impact of AMC Airmen executing the AMC mission across the United States Europe Command, Central Command, and Africa Command theaters with amazing precision,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Brad Spears, 521st AMOW commander. “More importantly, it provided an opportunity to highlight the motivated and innovative Airmen in this wing that

An NCO who is exactly what the Air Force needs, honored as Airlifter of the Week A member of the 86th Material Maintenance Squadron was honored as the Airlifter of the Week March 21. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Hase, 86th MMS war reserve materiel noncommissioned officer in charge, was honored by the 86th Airlift Wing command team for his outstanding accomplishments. Recently, Hase coordinated with Air Force Materiel Command Armament Headquarters subject matter experts to fulfill a short-notice deployment tasking for aircraft damage repair. Hase was able to collect and complete all the necessary information for the outbound shipment process from three different countries, in less than 48 hours. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th AW commander said it takes a professional to take these types of events and turn them into results, which yields combat air power.
Hase’s leadership enabled 85 repairs to a mortar damaged C-130J Super Hercules, and provided damage repairs to a malfunctioning C-5 Galaxy aircraft door. Hase said it was pretty awesome for the 86th AW command team to honor him and the 86th MMS. In collaborating with his team and critically thinking, Hase allowed for two downed aircraft to be returned to full mission capable status, weeks ahead of schedule. U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief, said Hase is a perfect example of what the 86th command is asking of an NCO and he’s what the U.S. Air Force needs. To close the ceremony August and Rendon, accompanied by Hase’s peers and leadership, shined a light on the accomplishments of the 86th MMS and the Airmen who support it.

ing opportunity for both countries to understand each other and how they fly, and their culture and how their military operates.” The training ended with approximately eight cargo delivery system bundles dropped and approximately 20 hours of training flights accomplished in skies over France. “The thing I want to communicate is how important these partnerships are for the U.S. military, and for our allies,” said Espinosa. “It’s a global effort to combat terrorism, and the threat that we have in near-peer adversary, so being able to come out here to train and develop those partnerships and relationships is going to be vital to our future of global security, allied security, and security of the homeland.”
“A lot of planning went into the exercise to make sure all the paperwork was in order,” said 1st Lt. John Kornahrens, 37th AS C-130J co-pilot. “It led to the fact that the opportunities are there, and with some of our partner nations, we can really get necessary training done for both parties in a joint environment.” This off-station training was important as the experience improved upon the capability of airmen in both militaries. “It just shows that we are all on the same team,” said Kornahrens. “Just because we have a certain capability, does not mean the French do and vice versa. Smith Elementary School students compete in robotics challenge
Fifth graders, Gabriel H. and Gregory M., on team “Beast aka Santa Claus” watch their robot perform a complex maneuver. They were one of six Smith Elementary School teams to participate in the First Lego League competition, March 18.
Story and photo by Mary Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Fourth and fifth graders from Smith Elementary School demonstrated their creativity and technical know-how during the First Lego League competition, March 18. The annual competition encourages students worldwide to design and construct robots using standardized construction kits and program them to perform complex tasks within a 2 1/2 minute time frame during the event. Six Smith Elementary School teams competed against 46 fourth- and fifth-grade teams at 14 Department of Defense Education Activity Europe schools. The event was broadcasted live to each DODEA Europe school. Steven Swiger, fifth-grade teacher at Smith Elementary School, used the foundation of engineering to explain robotics concepts to the students. “During the competition, students serve as structural, design and coding engineers,” he explained. “These skills transfer into life quite easily. With the continued drive toward full automation, our society will need adults with skills the students use daily in this program.” Two-person teams worked on their bots — meticulously building, programming, testing and problem-solving each machine — until the FLL competition took place six months
later. Identical FLL table top playing fields were constructed at each school with teachers and volunteers serving as on-site coaches to score each attempt. During the competition, teams received points for bots correctly performing tasks within the allotted time period. This competition goes beyond teaching engineering and robotics skills, Swiger said. Students learn teamwork, problem-solving, realworld math and science concepts and risk evaluation. For “Team Simulation,” the months leading to the competition was as fun as it was challenging for the fifthgrade pair. “We only get 2 1/2 minutes for our bot to perform its tasks,” said Haley H., a newcomer to SES and the FLL project. “In my opinion, it’s difficult to program because you have to know how far to go to make turns and how fast the bot needs to travel so you can go through the course quickly.” Her teammate, Yazmine B., said assembling the bot was more difficult. “The hardest part for me was building the worm drive. At first, we built it wrong because the disc was on the bottom instead of the top and it wouldn’t rotate. It was also very difficult to attach it to the bot,” she said. “It was a lot of fun learning how to build and program it though.” Although he had never pro-
grammed before, 11-year-old Jahmar D. and his teammate Krystine R. were up for the challenge. “Inputting the programs were the hardest part of the challenge, because just seeing it, you don’t know what you’re going to have to do and how you’re going to do it,” said the fifth grader on the “JK Destroyers” team. “You have to write a program for each thing you want it to do,” said fourth-grader Krystine. “We programmed our bot to do three things. It was tough at first, but it became easier as we did this more.” Amia V. from “Team Life Changers” said FLL was cool because “it was one of the only opportunities I got to work with programming a robot,” said the 10-year-old, fourth grader. “I really think the hardest part for me was building the arm, because it was very complicated to figure out how to make it go up and down. Basically, one of the teams had an arm that was really cool, so we asked them, ‘how did you do that?’ We were able to use their idea and improve on it for our bot.” Overall, Amia liked the program and wants to continue in the FLL competition next year when she moves to another school. “I think this program is really cool, because at my old school, there weren’t any after school clubs like there are here,” she said. Amia’s parents, Jacqueline and
David, were impressed with the ingenuity and skills their daughter and her classmates demonstrated during the event. “It was very interesting. Amia tells us a lot about what they are doing, but we didn’t really understand what is going on until now,” Jacqueline said. “It was nice to see what they’ve been doing for the past six months. I’m excited for them, and I think they did well for their first competition. We leave at the end of the school year, so we are hoping she can continue with FLL wherever we move next.” This is Swiger’s fourth year coaching future engineers for this competition, and he understands how much effort students put into their bots to participate. “This event is incredibly challenging. Of course, they all think it will be easy when they first look at the table. But, after a few attempts, they realize how meticulous they need every movement to be,” he said. Encouraging the next generation of engineers and scientists, Swiger said he feels honored to help inspire them in math and science. “I live vicariously through their eyes. I only wish I could have had such amazing technology to work with when I was a kid,” he concluded. “So instead of standing back and pondering my past, I choose to help the new generation forge their own futures.”

LRMC keeps providers medically ready for trauma by Gia Oney Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Medical providers from the Army, Air Force and Navy gathered at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center March 14 to 15 for certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support, a program designed by the American College of Surgeons to equip medical providers to identify, treat and manage life-threatening injuries in trauma patients. LRMC is the only location within the U.S. European Command that offers ATLS training. Aside from the U.S. Army Medical Command, providers come from U.S. Forces Command, U.S. Africa Command as well as from the Air Force and Navy. In addition, the pass rate for the course at LRMC is nearly 100 percent. As a surgeon in LRMC’s Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic who deals mainly with facial traumas, Air Force Maj. Brent Feldt also serves as the ATLS course director, a volunteer position he acquired due to his experience as an instructor following initial certification in the course. “The goal of ATLS training is to standardize that initial trauma assessment and management,” said Feldt. “We put the students in the mindset that if they were the only provider in a rural setting and a trauma patient presented, these are the steps you would take to treat him or her.” Additionally, Feldt emphasized that ATLS is also a way to teach both military and civilian providers from across the service branches to speak the same language in a trauma setting. This most recent course consisted of 15 students — seven Army, five Air Force and three Navy, taught by seven instructors from the Air Force and Navy. Although there are Army providers certified to teach ATLS at LRMC, each instructor must volunteer his or her time depending on current mission and organizational needs. “Trauma isn’t something reserved for an emergency room setting,” said Feldt. “We instruct everyone from Air Force flight medics to Navy family practice providers to even Army pediatricians. It’s important that we can all understand each other if a trauma situation arises.” While all military providers who offer trauma care are required to have ATLS certification, Feldt indicated that the training is actually geared for those medical professionals who don’t

Cmdr. Jimmy Westbrook (right), an urgent care physician at Navy Hospital Sigonnella, Italy, and course instructor of the Advanced Trauma Life Support training held at LRMC March 14 to 15. Air Force Maj. Lindsey Marquez, a CRNA at LRMC (left) and Army Capt. Nathaniel Cranney, a family physician assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Vilseck, Germany, were also students in the ATLS course. have an immediate need for trauma training, like pediatricians. “Readiness is our priority and a pediatrician or internal medicine doctor may find himself or herself deployed to a forward combat theater,” said Feldt. “They have to be ready to participate in critical care and ATLS equips them with those trauma skills.” During the two-day training, students are challenged with both lecture-based information and hands-on simulation. Class sizes are kept small so the student to instructor ratio is low, allowing for more personal training. To wrap up the course, students must pass both a written exam and a capstone scenario where they are graded one-on-one by an instructor who provides a trauma scenario. The students must walk the instructor through the scenario, step-bystep, verbalizing each action and performing treatment on the simulation manikins. “The ATLS training now is much more robust as far as opportunities to interject scenarios that we can see in a deployed location,” said Air Force Maj. Monica Sickler, a family physi-
cian and flight surgeon at Aviano Air Base, Italy, who last took the course in 2015. “I’ve been deployed twice since I last took ATLS and while the traumas I did encounter were not considered major, I did feel ready and confident because of what I learned from the course.” While ATLS certification is only offered to credentialed providers like physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, Army combat medics often find their way to the training for knowledge retention and skills maintenance. Sgt. Fotty Manneh, the force health protection noncommissioned officer in charge at the U.S. Army Health Clinic Hohenfels, Germany, and a combat medic, was one such student. In preparation for his mission to Bulgaria later this spring, Manneh took the course to challenge himself to think beyond that first hour of care in a combat environment. “I’m providing clinical support for the rotational units coming out,” said Manneh. “I’m a combat medic, not a doctor. ATLS gave me a firmer understanding of prolonged care. I’m trained in tourniquets and some of
that baseline medic care, but ATLS helped me think beyond that. If I’m with an injured Soldier for more than an hour or two, now I know I can do more.” Moving forward, Feldt hopes to take the course on a roadshow, offering it at more locations throughout the European theater and getting more providers trained in ATLS. He credits Regional Health Command Europe with providing the opportunities for non-Army providers to attend the course, and it means a lot to him that the Army is taking care of him as an Air Force program director. “[The other services] have the same training requirements as we do and their instructors enable the course,” said Col. Edward Michaud, chief of clinical operations for Regional Health Command Europe and major proponent of the course. “It’s also important that LRMC, as a trauma center, maintains this training.” ATLS is offered at LRMC four times a year. Army Civilian steps up during in-flight medical emergency by Ashley Patoka Regional Health Command Europe You never think a medical emergency is going to happen to you, but what if it does? And what if you are on a flight, two hours from your destination and over the Atlantic Ocean? Hopefully, when the flight attendants ask for medical personnel on the flight to come forward, someone like Rob Wilson, Dental Health Command Europe Patient Safety Manager, is on board. Wilson, who is also an operating room nurse in the Army Reserves, was recently on a flight from Frankfurt, Germany, to Orlando, Fla., when another passenger began having difficulty breathing. When medical personnel were asked to come to the back of the plane, he didn’t hesitate. “We were over the ocean,” Wilson said, “when they asked for medical personnel. Without any hesitation I went back. I figured there would be a lot of other people and they probably wouldn’t even need me, but when I got back there it was myself and an American doctor.” Wilson said the passenger who needed help was an older gentleman,

who was pale, had clammy skin and was breathing shallow. After a quick assessment, Wilson determined the man’s Pulse oximetry — or oxygen level in the blood — was 60 percent and his heart rate was in the 80s. Prior to Wilson and the doctor arriving, the flight attendants had already given the man an oxygen mask, however he wouldn’t keep it on. Wilson said with the oxygen mask his “oxygen readings would come up, but as soon as he took it off they would go back down.” “He did not speak English, and his wife only spoke a little German,” Wilson said. It turns out when the man was taking off his oxygen mask, he was asking his wife for his emergency inhaler. “We finally figured out that he was asking his wife to get his emergency inhaler,” Wilson said. “But he wasn’t using it properly so the medication wasn’t getting to his lungs.” Because the man’s vitals were not improving, Wilson and the doctor began getting ready to intubate, or place a flexible plastic tube into the trachea to maintain an open airway. “I started getting everything together to do the intubation,” Wilson said, “and at the same time a German provider came back and spoke with the other doctor and they decided to give the man a steroid medication and valium to help calm him down, [rather than intubating].” After about 30 minutes, the medications began working and the man was feeling well enough to go back to his seat for the rest of the flight. Wilson’s work wasn’t done yet, he helped the flight attendants complete the paperwork to give the paramedics when the plane landed — that included annotating was what was given and when. As a nurse in the Army Reserves, Wilson said his military training “definitely helped when it came to being able
to work on the fly. Having been in the Reserves my whole Army career, we don’t typically have fixed facilities when we do our training, so I think that helped me stay calm and collected.” W i l s o n added, “I think that’s my attitude in life too — get it done.” That attitude has helped him progress since he joined the Army in 1993 as an operating room Recently, Rob Wilson, a major in the Army Reserves, was on an international flight technician. “I didn’t want when another patient began having difficulty breathing. by 1st Lt. Douglas Boren 1st Combat Communications Squadron Ramstein Air Base is the home of numerous units that have unique missions, and one of the most unique is the 1st Combat Communications Squadron. Tasked with bringing the tactical edge of cyberspace to deployed and hostile environments, 1st CBCS provides deployed communications, from satellite dishes to mobile air traffic control towers, to the U.S. military in the European and African theater of operations. In February the 1st CBCS deployed a team of Total Force members to the Portuguese air force base Aérea 5 in Monte Real, Portugal. At the mission site, 1st CBCS provided communications to the 480th Fighter Squadron f rom Spangdahlem Air Base as the unit flew exercise sorties for their F-16C Fighting Falcons with the Portuguese air force. One of the key training objectives for the CBCS team deployed to Portugal was to prove that high frequency radios are still a via-

ble option when the U.S. military is fighting in an environment where other standard means of communications are compromised. Using HF radios is not a new technology; the world has been using high frequency radios to talk since the late 19th century and HF is still popular with amateur radio enthusiasts. The resiliency of HF signals make it an ideal means of communication due to its ability to broadcast over long distances with minimal interference. After coordinating with the Portuguese to find space on the air base, a team of four CBCS Airmen erected an antenna mast standing over 50 feet tall connected to their radio equipment in an adjacent building. Working with a team over 1,400 miles away back at Ramstein, the two sites were able to communicate via text chat and voice. Additionally, the sites were able to send data files to each other in seconds, a first for the squadron that normally uses complicated tactical networks to share files. This past week, 1st CBCS took it a step further; using the same HF radios,

they were able to communicate across the Atlantic back to an HF radio site in Maryland. To accomplish this their team worked with the Army Signal Corps and employed radio relay stations to reach back to the East Coast, pushing the envelope for the reach of tactical comms and strengthening joint interoperability. While there is still work to be done to refine its effectiveness, this capability is a huge success for the communications community. This team is achieving one of the Secretary of the Air Force’s priorities of driving innovation by leveraging old technology and bringing it into the 21st century. Technology like HF allows our warfighters to maintain command and control options in contested environments. To face the challenges of modern adversaries and rapidly evolving battlefields, Airmen of the 1st CBCS will continue to modify and develop new tactics, and look to the past for ideas that help bridge the gap between experience and operational capabilities.

by Robert Baldwin contributing writer RAMSTEIN Ramstein swept a baseball double header from Stuttgart Saturday while Kaiserslautern lost twice to visiting Wiesbaden in the season opener for all four teams. Yogi Berra was right. It truly ain’t over until it’s over. Twice, Ramstein scored the winning run in its last at bat to defeat Stuttgart 1-0 and 5-4 at the Royals field. The opener is always an adventure because, even though the teams have been practicing, it is the first time they can see league competition, pitch to an umpire the pitchers have probably never seen before, find out where they are solid and where they still need to tinker. Also, Ramstein is young and it is time to see how they hold up to varsity competition. Coach Osvaldo Garcia Carillo has four freshmen, seven sophomores, three juniors, and three seniors on his roster. It all starts with pitching. Tradition holds that the pitcher on opening day is a veteran who has been through it before. But Garcia Carillo went against the grain and started two very young pitchers, sophomore Ethan Smith and freshman CJ Delp. Smith dazzled and Delp did his job and made a good pitch to get a ground ball with the bases loaded, showing that Garcia Carillo has faith in his youngsters and will not hesitate to use them all in clutch situations. In the opener, Smith, with steady guidance of veteran catcher Nathan Kranz, struck out eight over five innings to earn the shutout. The Royals scored a run in their half of the fifth inning thanks to a series of walks and errors to give Garcia Carrillo his first Ramstein victory. The Royals played errorless baseball. Kaden Romleski, Tieran Shoffner, Smith, and Chris Guzaldo each collected hits for the Royals. In the second game, Stuttgart’s Jack Harris showed he might be the league’s best pitcher. In his three innings, he dominated, held the Royals to two singles, struck out eight of the nine outs, including the last six. Harris, tall and strong with intimidating mound presence, used a rising fastball and a decent off speed pitch to keep the Royals from getting solid contact. But Stuttgart lifted him after the third because of the

pitch count, giving Ramstein new life. Stuttgart Head Coach Rob Lloyd was not going to make Delp’s varsity debut easy. He instructed his hitters to take a strike before swinging, putting pressure on Delp to throw strikes early in the count. Delp jammed the leadoff hitter who popped up to third base for the first out, then ran into some opening day jitters and the next three hitters reached base. But he got the second out on a pop up to the catcher and looked like he was going to get out of the inning when he coaxed Wesley Coglianese to hit a ground ball to the right side. But the Ramstein second baseman had shaded toward the base to hold the runner and the ball slipped through the vacated hole. Then, when the Ramstein right fielder could not come up with it, the ball rolled deep behind him and all three runners scored. Stuttgart finished the scoring with a base hit and it was 4-0 after one. Tieran Shoffner, one of three Royals seniors along with Jared Junkins and Kranz, relieved Delp and held Stuttgart scoreless for two plus innings. He gave way to freshman Miles Murphy who picked up the victory with two strong innings of hitless relief. The Royals locked it up in the fifth and final inning thanks to shaky Stuttgart defense and that attitude that the Ramstein teams have demonstrated time after time, that they would once again come back and win. The Royals scored four runs, with sophomore Makani Stenger capping the inning with a deep sacrifice fly to left field to plate the winner. Guzaldo and Romleski each managed two hits for the Royals.
“The boys executed the game plan to perfection,” Garcia Carillo said. “There were a couple of hiccups on certain plays, but the players were able to adjust and compete with their heart. That was the key to win both games. These guys are really good!” Ramstein is in Vicenza with a game against Naples today and Vicenza tomorrow. KAISERSLAUTERN At Kaiserslautern, the Raiders fell to visiting Wiesbaden 8-4 in the first game and 16-0 in the second. In the opener, both clubs started their top pitchers, Austin Deckinga for Wiesbaden and sophomore Ronin Sherman for the Raiders. Sherman struck out the leadoff hitter, but he reached base when strike three squirted away and advanced to second when the throw was over the first basemen’s head, which set the tone for the inning. Also, because of the high sky and bright sun, anything hit into the air was difficult to pick up for the outfielders and there was no such thing as a routine fly ball. It was 4-3 Wiesbaden after the first inning, which lasted almost 50 minutes.
Yet the game did not lack for drama. Because of the enforced time limit, the last inning was the fourth with Kaiserslautern down 8-3. Jayvn Hill opened with a single. Deckinga got the next two hitters on a strike out and a groundout. A passed ball moved Hill to second. Matthias Perrin’s single knocked him home, 8-4 Wiesbaden. Following a wild pitch, Sam Newberry walked and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with two outs and the tying run at the plate. But Deckinga threw a high outside fastball to get Colin Zayd to pop up to the first baseman for the third out, securing the final at 8-4. “We were hoping for a big base hit at that moment, but we should not have been in that hole in the first place,” Kaiserslautern Head Coach Jeremy Bates said. “Our defense has to tighten up and support our pitching more, and we will go to work on that right away.” In the second game, Wiesbaden started early and pulled away for a 16-0 victory. Before the season, Bates said that he never really knows how the team is going to perform until it actually takes reps in a real contest. The usually upbeat and positive Bates was noticeably frustrated after the two losses, especially with the Raiders defense. “We learned that we have a lot of work to do in order to get back to the team we were a year ago. The potential is there, but it has to be developed by both coaches and players.” Bates will use the losses as a stepping stone to assure they work hard on improvement throughout the season. He said 75 percent of each practice is spent on fundamentals and individual improvement drills. The veteran coach’s body of work shows that the Raiders are always competitive come tournament time in May. The Raiders are hosting SHAPE at 2 p.m. today and will travel to Stuttgart tomorrow.

Guide to reading your meters By FindItGuide.com As technology marches on, more and more processes are automated to make life a little easier and more efficient. You can do most things right on your smartphone — from ordering out to controlling your home all with apps. However, one very important task that is still done the “old fashioned” way in many areas of Germany is meter reading. What can create a challenge when it comes to getting your meter read is needing to be at the house to allow the utility representative in to see the actual meter. Often in the States, utility meters are on the outside of the buildings, but in Germany, it is most common to find your meters in some technical room within the house. One reason it is so important to be at the house when the meter is read is that the utility company needs to reconcile how much electricity, or other utility, you used versus how much they thought you might use. What further complicates this annual
exercise is if your utility stipend does not match what the utility company projected for you. It is possible you were receiving too much money from your housing office, in which case you would owe them some money back when it comes time to reconcile. If you used a lot more power than what you received funds for, you may end up owing the utility company more. If you have moved into a brand new house, things are further complicated by the fact the house has no historical data to pull from when it comes to usage, so everything is an educated guess. It is best to put some money aside to potentially cover any shortfalls you may come across if your reconciliation amount is a larger number than you were expecting — in other words, you owe more than you thought you would have to pay. There is another thing that can make this task difficult to deal with: You don’t speak German! It can be a stressful experience to try to help this person that showed up at your door with their gadget in hand if they don’t speak to you in English. Have no fear! There are a couple simple things you can do to ease the stress.

One of the most important things you should do when you PCS to Germany is sign up with the Utility Tax Avoidance Program office. There are offices for both the Army and Air Force. This program is set up to give you a tax break on your utilities, which can save you 19 percent tax on electricity and 7 percent on your water bill. They are also a valuable source of information when it comes to dealing with your local utility company.
