German civilian police enrich 86th SFS Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs One can spot them at the large vehicle inspection gate or patrolling base, wearing Airman Battle Uniforms and blue berets. As members of the 86th Security Forces Squadron, they help keep Ramstein safe and work alongside Airmen as German civilians. Zivilpolizei, or Civilian Security Police, bring a wealth of experience to Ramstein’s law enforcement. “We as Airmen come and go, but ZPs are here years and years,” said Airman 1st Class Daniel Regan, 86th SFS member. “They get to see shortterm and long-term effects of changes and different policies.” Regan is new to his career field, but he has a lot of experience to draw from. “They mentor us as Airmen just getting here out of tech school, and they’re here to guide us,” Regan said. “The See POLICE, Page 2

Renovations underway at Ramstein fitness centers by Senior Airman Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Northside Fitness Center and the Southside Fitness Center are both currently undergoing renovations on Ramstein Air Base, with an expected completion date in June 2018. “Renovation plans due to water damage at the Southside Fitness Center were already in motion,” said 1st Lt. Anne Herrmann, 786th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports section chief. “When we found out there was possible funding to replace the

Northside’s flooring, as well as expand our workout area, we decided to take that opportunity.” Renovations at the NSFC will include completely replacing and reinforcing the flooring in the main freeweight area, racquetball courts three and four, and the current powerlifting room. When completed, the powerlifting room will move to the newly transformed, former racquetball courts and a “tactical fitness area” (for cross-fit-style workouts) will be introduced to the community. “The Northside Fitness Center was

built in the 1950s, and the current freeweight area was a basketball court,” said Alysha Brandy, 786th FSS fitness program manager. “It’s on a floating floor, with space between the cement and the wood. With people dropping weights when it was converted to a weight room, the floor has suffered severe damage.” For the convenience of customers, renovations will occur in several phases to avoid major facility closures. “We sincerely appreciate your patience while we bring fitness improvements and introduce new capabilities to better serve our customers and commu-

nity,” Herrmann said. “In the long run, it’s going to be the best thing for our customers.” To lessen inconveniences caused by the renovations, the SSFC will open at 0430 on weekdays. “After careful consideration, there wasn’t enough traffic to justify keeping the gym open past nine at night, though,” Herrmann said. “Child care facilities close to construction will also be closed during renovations for safety. But, we have a parent child care area See RENOVATIONS, Page 2

Page 2 POLICE, from Page 1 most valuable thing ZPs contribute to Ramstein is experience.” The longest-standing ZP patrolman on Ramstein has been helping keep service members and their families safe for 28 years. Marcus Mueller, 86th SFS patrolman, has been a ZP on Ramstein for 15 years, and a patrolman for 10. During that time, he’s handled a lot of situations. Mueller has done everything from handing out tickets, to training new Airmen, to recovering lost children and saving lives through emergency medical care. Mueller explained that ZPs act as liaisons between German authorities and the Air Force. “If an active duty patrolman comes here to Ramstein, he knows about the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but he doesn’t know German law,” Mueller explained. ZPs can help with matters of German law, overcome language barriers, and coordinate with German police, or Polizei. Regan said that the most valuable thing he’s learned from working with ZPs is to keep an open mind to learning, because ZPs will try to share as much law enforcement experience as possible. “For example, there could be a situation as simple as approaching someone who didn’t stop at a stop sign,” Regan said. “I might want to

just walk up to them and give them a ticket or a briefing, but the ZPs will think a lot deeper, like ‘Do they have a weapon on them? Are there drugs? Why did they run the stop sign?’ Not to mention, if you do have to apprehend someone, the ZPs are experts on the extensive paperwork that follows.” Mueller said that Airmen influence ZPs as well. “They keep us motivated,” Mueller said. “If you work on a base for 10, 20, or more years, that’s a long time. They come in and they’re fresh and they want to get out there. I love to train them because it’s always a new challenge, and challenges push you forward.” ZPs have helped Regan understand more than just the job. “I grew up on Rhode Island,” Regan said. “Coming from a very small place to the continent of Europe, working with the ZPs helped me acclimate to the culture of Germany and Europe in general. I hadn’t eaten döner until I met them.” 86th SFS Airmen and ZPs have each other’s backs, and they have good reasons to, Regan added. “It’s teamwork,” he said. “Police in general, we’re a brotherhood. German, American, civilian, military — at the end of the day we’re coming together to accomplish a common goal, and that’s to keep everybody safe.”

RENOVATIONS, from Page 1 three minutes down the road, and one right here at Southside.” The 786th FSS is working closely with the 86th Civil Engineer Squadron and the 435th Construction and Training Squadron to ensure the fitness facilities’ renovations go as smoothly as possible, Herrmann said. Additionally, other fitness centers are available for use during the renovation, such as Vogelweh Fitness Center, Kleber Fitness Center, Sembach Fitness

Center, Landstuhl Fitness Center, and Rhine Ordnance Barracks Fitness Center. Officials add that recent upgrades to the 24/7 access system at Vogelweh Fitness Center now allow spouses and dependents to register their ID cards for access during unmanned hours. All dates are approximate and are subject to change at any time. Updates and changes will be posted to the “Ramstein and Vogelweh Fitness Centers” Facebook page, as well as signs posted at the facilities.

Military Saves not just one week by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Force Support Squadron Airman & Family Readiness Center conducted this year’s Military Saves Week, , from Feb 26 to March 2, an annual Department of Defense-wide program where facilitators encourage participants to take the pledge to save. Those who took the pledge will receive emails to keep them on track to achieve their goals. Classes for the week covered topics like how to travel Europe on a budget, home buying, and retirement planning basics. All the information presented during the week and much more will continue to be available by appointment at the A&FRC, where licensed consultants are prepared to sit down with customers and guide them to their financial goals. Ruthy Srun, 86th FSS A&FRC community readiness consultant, talked about the importance of being able to handle one’s finances. “If finances are going wrong, it can impact relationships,” Srun said. “It can impact readiness. It can impact every single part of our lives, and we’re so scared to talk about it sometimes. Sometimes coming out and talking to a group makes people feel more comfortable

receiving information.” During her time at the A&FRC Srun has seen some financial trends. “In the military, one of the biggest challenges we see is folks not understanding how to save,” Srun said. “We all have the ability to save, but sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Whether you start by saving $10 a month, or $100 a month—it doesn’t matter. Even starting small is going to go a long way.” Srun encourages anyone to make an appointment at the A&FRC, regardless of status. “We have folks of all ranks and grades coming in for financial assistance,” Srun said. Srun said that sometimes

SAFETY CORNER Be smart!

Although we cannot control the actions of those around us, we can make wise and informed choices for ourselves and our loved ones, thereby reducing the odds that we’ll be involved in a motor vehicle crash. Observing the laws which are designed to keep us safe on the roadways, along with following some common sense rules, may make the difference between a safe and pleasant driving experience versus a crash, and it could ultimately safe your life.

people think the A&FRC’s financial counseling is only for those who are having trouble, but that is not true. “We have a lot of folks come in because they want to be proactive,” Srun said. “They’ve gone as far as they know how to go, and they want to know what else they can do.” As Srun explained, there’s

always more to learn and she highly recommends even financially successful people to come get more information. “You can always do better,” Srun said. “I feel pretty confident and successful myself, but I’m always the first to read an article about finances and go to a class on a topic I don’t know about. The way

finances work changes all the time. Everyone, even experts, always need to get continued education on finances.” Customers sometimes return to the A&FRC to give an update on how the information helped them. Some of those customers find the information so helpful that they want to help pass it along to others. “One of our consultants here met with a customer about debt management.” Srun said. “The customer came back and said ‘this was incredibly helpful, and it really made a difference for me.’ Now she’s having us come out and talk to about 100 Airmen in her unit about finances.” Srun said that people spreading the word and helping others get the same help is exactly what the consultants of the A&FRC want. “We will come out to units and provide financial education if they invite us,” Srun said. “We’re happy to do that. We want to meet people where they’re at.”

USAFE-AFAFRICA contractor earns Purple Heart Story and photos by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A communications engineer assigned to the U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa video operations center received the Purple Heart Feb. 27 on Ramstein Air Base. Judson Rackley, an Army veteran who now serves the Air Force as a contractor, awarded the decoration in front of his friends, family, and colleagues during a ceremony led by Brig. Gen. Christopher Craige, USAFEAFAFRICA chief of staff. Rackley was coy about receiving what he called his last decoration, and joked about it being one of the less desired honors. “It’s been a long time coming, and it’s not really one that I want to get,” he said, laughing a little bit. “It puts the final seal on my service. It’s the last one, and now I’m a civilian moving on.” He expressed gratefulness that he was able to receive the medal himself, and that it didn’t have to be accepted by a surviving relative. The Purple Heart is awarded to military members and veterans for wounds received or death after being wounded in action against enemy forces. Eight years ago when he was deployed to Afghanistan, Rackley was driving a vehicle during an escort mission when suddenly his team encountered a complex ambush. Rackley’s vehicle hit an improvised explosive device and the blast was so strong it disabled the vehicle and knocked the crew unconscious, he said. “When I came to, all I could hear was the commander yelling into the headset asking if we were okay,” Rackley recalled. “When we reported that we thought we were okay but the vehicle was disabled, the commander began to move his truck up so his gunner could provide cover.” Rackley also remembered getting shot at, then after a while being transferred by his teammates to a different vehicle. The mission continued despite the attack, but Rackley and his team

encountered more IEDs along the way. The group’s higher command ordered them to stop and wait for a route clearance team to come and escort them back, Rackley said. Even while following the route clearance team, they still ended up hitting one more IED, he added. The escort team eventually made it back to their forward operating base, where medical personnel met them. Rackley described his journey to recovery as a long and difficult one. He received surgeries, rehabilitation, and counseling for his injuries. Rackley gave a long list of people and agencies who helped him with his recovery. He highlighted the one he deemed most important to him: his wife Audrea. He cited Audrea as a source of inspiration, whether it was through positive encouragement or things he “didn’t want to hear.” “She’s always there to give me what I need,” Rackley said. “She’s been there

for 14 years and honestly she probably deserves this (award) more than I do.” Rackley encouraged military members and veterans who suffered trauma from deployment to use the services available to them, such as the Veterans

Affairs office, many private organizations, or their local hotlines. The road to recovery should not be traveled alone, Rackley added. “Ask for help,” he said. “The tools are there, just reach out.”

Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Jason Epperson 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion (Airborne) Despite icy winds and low temperatures, spirits were high in Freedom Square where a military parade began convoying around noon, kicking off the 100th year anniversary of the Estonian statehood in Tallinn, Estonia, Feb. 24. The military parade consisted of 1,100 participants and more than a hundred units of military equipment, but one piece of equipment stood out towards the end of the formation. The Patriot air defense missile system carefully weaved through the narrow cobblestone streets of Old Town with the crew members waving to the crowds of spectators, many waving Estonian flags. Cpt. Thomas Harris, commander of Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command said his team and he were excited to be able to participate in the Estonian celebration and proud to be a member of the only U.S. Patriot battalion stationed in all of United States European Command. “The operational tempo is high in the European theater. We go all over the continent. Netherlands, Sweden, Romania and Poland. Before we came here, we were actually in the field two to three weeks training for

gunnery. So these Soldiers came out of the field, after successfully accomplishing that mission, they jumped into this one and hit the ground running. They really knocked it out of the park,” Harris said. According to Harris, this experience was valuable and beneficial as well for his team. “They’ve been meeting with their Estonian counterparts, learning about their weapons systems, teaching each other and it’s been an excellent once in a lifetime opportunity for us.” Col. David Shank, commander of the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command said that it was important for Soldiers of the 10th AAMDC to participate and show a unified front with all the countries involved. “This is a unified front as soldiers from 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command execute the year of integration while supporting our Estonian allies,” Shank said. “The opportunity for our young soldiers to participate and showcase their incredible talents in an event of this magnitude is significant. It is vitally important to the alliance, and to our Estonian allies in support of their centennial celebration.” Shank said his team is thankful to Estonia for inviting the 10th AAMDC to participate in their centennial celebration. “One hundred years of independence.

Our relationship with Estonia deepens in cooperation daily, having participated in the recent exercise Saber Guardian, Tobruq Legacy 17 and the upcoming Saber Strike 18. Congratulations

to the people of Estonia and Happy Independence Day!” The day prior, Harris and his team gave a Patriot System briefing to members of the Estonian Defense Forces at the Support Command Center in Tallinn. The Minister of Defense, Jüri Luik; Chief of Defense Gen. Riho Terras; and U.S. Ambassador to Estonia, James D. Melville Jr., were among those who attended, along with Col. Shank and Command Sgt. Maj. Gary E. Plotnick, Command Sergeant Major of the 10th AAMDC. The briefing consisted of the capabilities and knowledge about the Patriot weapon system and how it fits into a layered ballistic missile defense, followed by a question and answer session. The Estonian Minister of Defense, Jüri Luik, said that bringing a unit of the Patriot long-range missile defense system to Estonia is a symbolic step on the part of allies, and there are plans for joint training exercises between the partnering nations. “The allies are with us, and what would demonstrate this better than bringing an impressive air defense system here for demonstration,” Luik said. “But it’s not about the parade alone. The officers that are with the Patriot system have held discussions also with our Air Force. The subject definitely is how to participate in training exercises in the future.”

521st AMOW is ready to fight anytime, anywhere

521st Air Mobility Operations Wing leadership attend a commander’s conference Feb. 21 on Ramstein Air Base. Participants in the weeklong conference discussed concerns and topics ranging from unit readiness to mission execution and effectiveness.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When some people think of warfighting, they often think about the battle itself. But as the saying goes, “getting there is half the battle.” This is why leaders of the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing take their mission of providing air mobility to combat zones very seriously. “We continue to play a critical role in moving munitions, troops, and equipment in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel and Operation Inherent Resolve,” said Col. Thomas Cooper, 521st AMOW commander. “From delivering attack helicopters and ammunition, to evacuating wounded from the Middle East, our awesome Airmen continue to ensure rapid global mobility supporting our nation’s interests nonstop.” As a wing commander, Cooper’s monumental task of leading more than 2,000 Airmen requires a constant state of readiness. Most of the Airmen he leads aren’t even here at Ramstein. The 521st AMOW includes two groups, 10 squadrons, and a myriad of Airmen scattered across Europe, Africa and Southwest Asia. The wing’s Area of Responsibility spans more than 5,000 miles and encompasses more than 10 countries. “It is vital that we as Airmen build our readiness to meet any challenges anywhere and anytime,” said Cooper, who just concluded a conference involv-

ing leaders from across his wing. “Air Force leadership asked the force to achieve full spectrum readiness, and during our commander’s conference, our leadership teams discussed ways to work toward this. We also recently produced our wing readiness roadmap, which highlights ways we will work with our Airmen, units, and higher headquarters to be ever more lethal, resilient, agile, and ready, so that the joint force and our nation can depend on us.” In addition to readiness and lethality, topics at the conference included mission efficiency, unit effectiveness, morale, and innovation. The 521st AMOW stays ready through exercises, physical fitness, and special training days.

The 721st Air Mobility Operations Group, one of the 521st AMOW’s groups, recently conducted a training day in which Airmen refreshed warfighting skills such as first aid, donning chemical warfare gear, and safety and risk management. Leadership deemed the training so important, that they coordinated with the 618th Air Operations Center, located at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois, to deconflict real-world mission responsibilities with additional training opportunities, said Capt. Mallory Malda, 721st AMOG director of staff. “We collectively handle many, many aircraft arriving or departing Ramstein each and every day,” she said. “The air mobility mission never completely

stops, thus we still support several high priority missions to include urgent aeromedical evacuation missions. Still, through the support of our higher headquarters we were able to reduce our airflow enough to allow the focus on training while still meeting the mission demand.” The training gave 721st AMOG Airmen an opportunity to reflect upon the magnitude of their mission and the importance of resilience. “This day served as a means to allow our Airmen to take pause, reflect upon the incredible mission they support every day, and ready themselves to support any future challenges that await,” said Malda. Malda said the 721st AMOG’s mission supported more than 4,000 aircraft, over 120,000 passengers, transported approximately 1 million pounds of cargo, and supported more than 2,000 aeromedical evacuations during the past year. “We serve as the primary strategic air mobility hub for peacetime and wartime operations, rapidly projecting continental U.S.-based resources into and throughout the U.S. European Command, Africa Command, and Central Command AORs,” she added. “Our Air Mobility Command Airmen are ready to support any mission, anywhere, at any time.” Cooper expressed pride in his Airmen, saying he is optimistic about the future of the 521st AMOW and the missions his wing will execute. “As a leader of the 521st AMOW

March 9, 2018 I am constantly impressed by the younger Airmen,” he said. “As thinkers, leaders, and technicians they are way ahead of where I was as an Airman 30 years ago. The attitude and skills they bring

to mission accomplishment ensure we will succeed in the future. My confidence in the state of the Air Force is high because of what I see the amazing 521st AMOW Airmen do.”

USAG RP sends its ‘Best Warrior’ to competition Story and photos by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Army garrisons in Europe will send their top warfighters to Baumholder, Germany, to demonstrate their soldiering abilities at the 2018 Installation CommandEurope Best Warrior Competition, Monday to Wednesday — and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz is up for the challenge. BWC 2018 will identify the best performing warriors from among the participating garrison commands in both the Soldier and NCO ranks, through the performance of a tough, realistic, scenario-based and battle-focused competition. “This year’s competition, held over almost three grueling days, will select our very best NCO and Soldier Warrior from within the IMCOMEurope Garrison team,” said USAG RP Command Sgt. Maj. Brian N. Hauke. “This individual will have demonstrated he or she is the very best mentally fit, physically fit, expert in rifle marksman, knowledgeable in Level 1/2 warrior skills NCO and Soldier out there.” Representing USAG RP is Sgt. Jorge Brackett, a military police investigator with the Directorate of Emergency Services. Brackett, who participated in BWC 2017, said he’s ready to compete. “Last year, I feel like I surprised not only myself, but my mentors when I placed runner up,” he said. “Since I competed last year, my experience should help me know what to expect – basic Army tasks as well as a lot of physical tasks. It definitely pushed me to my limit.” This year’s event is hosted by USAG RP and will take place at Baumholder – affectionately called, “The Rock.” “I’m on my home turf, so traveling and whatnot isn’t a factor,” Brackett explained. “I know the area and have been preparing in Baumholder to get ready.” USAG RP’s best warrior is a gym enthusiast and has been preparing on his own for six

months by performing agreat deal of cardio as well as rucking and running hills to perform at optimal level for the rigorous three-day competition. “The ruck route makes me the most nervous, because I know rucking is not my best attribute,” said Brackett, who hails from East Lyme, Conn. “However, I am excited to see which route we end up using. Also, I know that I will be competing against a great friend and previous leader of mine, Sgt. Jeremy Lucena (USAG Bavaria). He taught me pretty much everything I know today, and I can’t wait to see how well I do against him.” Although rucking might be a skill Brackett is working on,

he was more confident about his land navigation abilities as a strength. “To me, competing in BWC is important so I can see where I’m at Army-task wise. Since I’m in a garrison, I don’t really get a chance to go to the field or train like you would in a line unit – that’s what makes it fun. BWC also gives me the chance to improve my skills when I do go back to a line unit,” he said. “Most of all, I’m proud to represent USAG RP again and thankful to my peers and leadership that provided me an opportunity to compete.” Over the course of the competition, it really becomes a mental gut check for the competitors who wants it the most when it comes down to it, said Hauke. “Make no mistake, however, these competitors must be knowledgeable in the war fighting craft first and foremost. Yes, they are physically challenged, but more importantly, they are mentally challenged on their skill knowledge and ability to make decisions when it matters the most,” the command sergeant major said. “I wish all our competitors from across the Europe garrisons the best of luck, however, we’re especially proud and rooting for our very own Sgt. Jorge Brackett from USAG Rheinland-Pfalz during this year’s competition.” Winners of the IMCOMEurope BWC will participate at the command level and ultimately at the Department of the Army level for the titles of Army Non-Commissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year. These competitions enhance morale, esprit de corps and professionalism; promote a wholesome spirit of competiveness within and among our organizations; and provide recognition for Soldiers who have outstanding military appearance, bearing and military knowledge. by 1st Lt. Casey Rodriguez 52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs Four Senegalese Air Force senior representatives visited both the 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base and the 52nd Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, Feb. 11 to 16. The group toured a wide variety of base facilities, offices, and professional education centers to get an idea of how the U.S. Air Force develops its Airmen and how it manages recruitment, retention and sustainment. “At this stage, we share with them how we do things within our Air Force,” said Noel Fachi, U.S. Air Forces Europe –Air Forces Africa theatre security cooperation program manager. “Later, their leaders can pick and choose and see what is sustainable to their air forces.” This is a new initiative grown in USAFE-AFAFRICA. After two years of planning, this program is designed to fast-track the growth of developing air forces of partner nations. “This cooperation is very strong,” said Senegalese Air Force Major Mamadou Wathie, Chief of the SAF Logistics Division. “We play our part, our juniors

will play their part, and we’ll continue to grow stronger and stronger in order to make our world safer.” “I’m a product of the U.S. Air Force,” said Wathie. He studied English at Joint-Base San Antonio Lackland before training with U.S. and NATO maintainers at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. “There’s no way that the U.S. can go it alone,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Ric Trimillos, USAFE-AFAFRICA International Affairs Director. “We’re always going to work alongside our partners,” he said. “Often times our partners recognize when we have inefficiencies,” said Trimillos. “In our own culture we’ve done it over and over again, and it gets us to think ‘yeah, why do we do it that way?’ So it’s an information exchange.” From here, the Senegalese returned to their commands with notes on what they observed: what works, what doesn’t, and what they’d like to see in their own force as they grow. In the future, USAF officials will return to Senegal to assist in writing the doctrine and share lessons learned from the USAF’s own 70 years of existence.

Participants toured active U.S. air bases to view their functions as a working model and use the information gathered to better organize and grow their own air force’s capacity. Photo by 1st Lt. Mental health: Stronger minds, stronger mission

The 47th Medical Group mental health flight accomplishes the goals of caring for Laughlin Airmen so they are able to remain mission-ready and deployment-capable, and caring for their families. Mental health is one of the four pillars of comprehensive airman fitness, along with physical, social and spiritual fitness, and a critical component to a person’s well-being.

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE, TEXAS 

The mental health flight might be a unit hidden in the far corner of Laughlin’s medical group, however, this small unit of Airmen work tirelessly to ensure pilots remain in flight status, the first responders remain able to safeguard the base, and even work with active duty members’ families and civilian employees to rest assured the mission goes on. Mental health is one of the four pillars of comprehensive airman fitness, along with physical, social and spiritual fitness, and a critical component to a person’s well-being. “Laughlin is a tight-knit community,” said Maj. Owen-John Williams, 47th Medical Group Mental Health Clinic commander. “We celebrate each other’s victories and successes, and we hurt deeply when members of the community feel pain or suffer a devastating setback in life. ‘Healthy’ mental health also means we recognize when our wingmen are hurting, and we are there to offer support and encouragement to them, or guide them to professional helping services if necessary” Williams appreciates the path his career takes him, within and without

the traditional lanes of providing psychotherapy services. “Every day I come to work, I get the opportunity to impact someone’s life in a positive way, be it a patient I’m treating, a commander I’m advising or professionally mentoring and developing one of my Airmen,” Williams said. Airman Monet Gaston-Crevelle, 47th MDG mental health clinic technician, appreciates the technicians have an opportunity to form a relationship with the patients even though they are not psychologists. “There have been times where a patient came in frantic, and we were able to calm them and provide the information they needed,” Gaston said. “We funneled the issue through the chain of command and helped them resolve their issue. It’s nice to be able to help them progress and reach their personal goals.” The mental health flight also provides opportunities for the technicians to broaden their horizons, Gaston added. “The mental health technicians are now able to sit in more often with in-takes,” said Airman 1st Class Christopher Dunning, 47th MDG Mental Health Clinic technician. “Even though we do more administrative work, I love the opportunity to help people. I didn’t even realize it was a job, but it’s what all of us love

doing — helping others.” However, mental health is not without challenges as they constantly work to balance taking care of the active duty members, ensuring they are ever deployment-ready and also caring for their families as well. These are the two primary mission goals for mental health which non-military facilities do not contend with. “In addition to our primary mission of accepting patients, active duty and their dependents, we also train monthly on deployment readiness skills so we can effectively deliver the mental health mission downrange,” said Williams. Dr. Scott Storm, 47th MDG Mental Health Clinic contract clinical psychologist, also noted another challenge for the mental health clinic is the fact those in need of assistance do not always feel comfortable going to mental health. He reassured just visiting mental health is not detrimental to one’s military career. “Military members sometimes think that if they come in and see us they’re automatically looking at administrative separation,” Storm said. “That’s not true at all. The Air Force has become very aware that Airmen have issues whether they be pilots, security forces, etc. Our goal, in fact, is to keep people in the military.” According to Williams, the mental

health team at Laughlin, which also includes the alcohol and drug abuse prevention and treatment program and the family advocacy program, is absolutely committed to enhancing the mental health of the base. “From our performance enhancement and stress management sessions with the student pilots to educating our Airmen about responsible drinking behaviors to hosting fitness playgroups for our parents and [toddlers] and helping families navigate the joys and challenges of parenting, we strive to bring our knowledge and expertise to the base population,” Williams said. “Healthy” mental health, Williams stated, means taking care of, nourishing and enhancing emotional and psychological needs, and not just seeking help when things aren’t going smoothly or life “throws a wicked curve ball.” One might use the analogy of a physical injury. If a person’s leg was bleeding profusely, the person would seek medical attention. Those with stressors in life who are finding it difficult to cope may feel as if they’re suffering a preverbal injury of the mind. It is not a tangible, visible injury, however, wellness of the mind is equally as important as wellness of the body. Laughlin mental health clinic accomplishes these goals every day, assisting anyone on the base in need of support.

» Inherit the Wind: Don’t miss KMC Onstage’s production of this timeless, science vs. religion story. The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. This play is based on the evolution trials of the 1920s, but its central theme — the pursuit of intellectual freedom — is just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Is my German tap water drinkable? by Bret Helenius If you have spent any time in Germany, you know that the Germans love their bottled water. You can’t go to a restaurant without being asked “mit oder ohne Kohlensaeure” (meaning with or without gas). Having water out of a bottle in Germany is like getting refills at a restaurant in the states. It is just standard protocol! Germany is the country with the highest number of bottled mineral water brands (908 bottled water labels). So why do the Germans pay for water out of a bottle when it is so costly? It must be because the ground water is not drinkable, right? Au contraire! Germany is generally known as a very “green” country, especially when it comes to disposing of waste in streams and rivers. Actually, Germany disposes of excess water resources from their water supply due to the abundance of rainfall and of good aquifers.Groundwater, mostly extracted from wells and less commonly from springs, supplies approximately 75% of all water for

public water supply. In past decades much emphasis was dedicated to improving water quality. Protecting groundwater from harmful pollutants requires the allocation of protection zones, the

removal or enclosure of contaminated sites, and the implementation of increasingly stricter environmental protection laws. The effects of all these measures are constantly evaluated in a large-scale monitor-

ing program. Drinking water is the most strictly monitored livelihood in Germany. Another thing Germans are Read more on last page of Property Section

Is my German tap water drinkable? known for is being frugal with their money. They have a “black belt” when it comes to managing their money and stretching their income is an art in this country. So if they are so frugal, why do they spend money on water when they have perfectly good water right in their own house? One can attribute medicinal qualities to Sprudel (mineral water with gas), pointing to the presence

of numerous little-known trace elements, which are missing in some sources of tap water. They are essential for humans because our bodies cannot produce them, so it is necessary to regularly get them from foods and water. The availability of minerals from food is less than mineral water, because in foods minerals are bound to complex molecules that can limit their absorbability, whereas in water they are present as free ions (which makes them easier to absorb). So although that tap water is clean and delicious, you might want to think about adding in a bit of the German culture and ordering up a bottle of water next time you are at a restaurant. 5 Soldiers inducted into Sgt. Morales Club Story and photo by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Five accomplished, enlisted Soldiers displaying character, commitment and leadership were inducted into the Rheinland-Pfalz Sergeant Morales Club, March 5, at Armstrong’s Club, Vogelweh. SMC admits the ranks of corporal through sergeant first class demonstrating excellence among enlisted leaders in Europe. This year’s inductees included Sgt. Kadarius M. English, 212th Combat Support Hospital; Staff Sgt. Ryan A. Theobald, USAG RP Directorate of Emergency Services; and Sgt. 1st Class Wesley T. De Souza, 18th Military Police Brigade. Honorary inductees included Command Sgt. Maj. Matthew P. Baller, 30th Medical Brigade; and Command Sgt. Maj. Ulysses D. Rayford, Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe. Candidates went through a rigorous process to include appearing before several selection boards, consisting of sergeants major and club members. To achieve member status, nominees had to be approved by all selection board members. Honorary membership is limited to individuals Courtesy graphic whose contributions and significant support to units and military communities can be measured in terms of their accomplishments. “The Sergeant Morales Club is something I’ve always dreamed about becoming a part of,” said Theobald,

USAG RP physical security inspector. “It meant the world to me to be recognized formally in this ceremony.” So who is Sergeant Morales? He’s a fictitious Soldier representing the ideal Army NCO. As the story goes – Morales was a young Army Soldier with a limited command of English and no high school diploma, but he never let any obstacle curb his commitment to his fellow Soldiers, unit or the Army. Every day, he led by example by being the first to volunteer for tough tasks. He fostered camaraderie by being a concerned, helpful friend exhibiting steadfast leadership to inspire and rally his flagging unit. Morales

went on to complete his high-school equivalency and two years of college, while serving as inspiration to his fellow Soldiers to follow. Although he’s served in the Army for 25 years, IMCOM-Europe’s command sergeant major said he’s honored to finally be a member of this elite group. “It’s a proud moment to join the Sergeant Morales Club,” Rayford said. “I’m also proud to see so many young Soldiers become members, because it’s like watching them grow up. I’ve known Sergeant English since he was a private, so seeing him and others inducted today was great.” Rayford also said it was good to see the Army recognizing excellence and taking care of its people. “To see our young Soldiers doing remarkable things in our community is a good feeling,” he said. “The greatest way to take care of our people is through recognition, so I’m glad to see them receive recognition for efforts.”

The unwavering perseverance and fighting spirit of Morales is in the hearts of all Soldiers, and exhibiting that spirit, integrity and faithfulness toward fellow warriors should be strived for every day, said Theobald. “Everyone has that Morales medallion inside of them. It’s just a matter of finding, developing and bringing it to life,” he said. “I just want to thank those who supported me – my family, Soldiers and leadership for recommending me to become a Sergeant Morales member.” Lt. Gen. George S. Blanchard, U.S. Army Europe commander, established the organization in 1973 to promote and recognize enlisted Soldiers serving in Europe who demonstrate the highest ideals of integrity, professionalism and leadership. Nominations for SMC membership are limited to those NCOs displaying individual concern for the needs, training, development and welfare of Soldiers, while improving the NCO Corps abilities as a combat-effective Army.

Knight’s Brigade develops leaders through Berlin staff ride Story and photos by Sgt. 1st Class Michael O’Brien 16th Sustainment Brigade Public Affairs

BERLIN  The 16th Sustainment Brigade conducted a staff ride to Berlin, Feb. 20 to 23, taking part in guided tours, seminars, and visits to sites of the Battle of Berlin. The ride concluded with an outing to the U.S. Embassy. The innovative week sharpened leaders’ ethical and critical decision-making skills through a week of reflection on the Soviet-German battle. “This week our leaders experienced a logistics-focused lesson centered on a large and important battle and in doing so embraced our profession and the meaning behind a Strong Europe,” said the Knight’s Brigade Commander, Col. Michelle Donahue. “An amazing learning opportunity, the staff ride also enabled 16th’s leaders to grapple with the past and present change in Europe’s operational environment and how recent events have led to multiple integration opportunities as well as a busy exercise schedule with our NATO allies — all intended to deter modern Russian aggression.” The continent’s only Sustainment Brigade — the 16th — logistically supports U.S. Army Europe, and frequently works with not only its German allies, but also many other NATO alliance members. “We’re here (on the staff ride) to work and learn,” said Lt. Col. Steven

Schultz, the brigade’s deputy commander. “We arranged with the U.S. Army Europe Staff Ride Program to walk us through a unique and ambitious program. Ordinarily, a staff ride is just a study of the battle, in this case the Battle of Berlin, in which you would study the operational piece of the Soviet Army trying to encircle Berlin, the tactical piece of them going into the city and fighting house to house, etc.” “We’re trying to do more this week,” Schultz continued. “In addition to studying the battle, and logistics operations in particular, we want to tell a story and try to answer two questions: Why are we here in Germany? How did the Russians go from wartime ally to strategic rival? By studying not just the Battle of Berlin, but the city in the 2nd half of the 20th Century, we think we can answer that question.” The ride’s first stop set the tone for the rest of the tour: The House of the Wannsee Conference Memorial and Educational Site. It was here in 1942 that fifteen high-ranking Nazi representatives including the SS, party officials, and various ministries met to discuss with alarming clarity their plan to execute the Final Solution; the country’s deportation and murder of European Jews. “What struck me about the Wannsee Conference was that the attendees were not concerned with the ‘why’ of the genocide but only the ‘how’,” said Capt. Michael McCarthy, a brigade assistant

operations officer. “They didn’t discuss the morality of the actions they were about to carry out; instead they only talked about administrative and logistical strategies without regard to emotion.” After a group discussion and a traditional local lunch, the group continued to Seelow Heights Museum, where the staff treated them to an audio-visual brief with an interactive terrain model illustrating an overview of the 1945 battle in this area. “Walking Seelow Heights really drove the point home that the terrain models in the museum presented,” said Sgt. 1st Class Albert Schuler, the brigade’s Senior Property Book NCO. “The amount of terrain the Soviets

covered in a short amount of time is amazing.” The Battle for Berlin in the spring of 1945, the last major European land battle, was one of the epic confrontations of World War II. Outnumbered and outgunned by nearly ten to one, German armed forces defended their capital against the tenacious and vengeful Soviets hell-bent on conquering it. The battles in Seelow Heights preceded the final Berlin Battle. A hollow force of old men, sailors, airmen, and Hitler Youth manned the Berlin barricades for the Third Reich’s last stand, as the Russian bombs and later artillery pounded it. Berlin’s capture, one of the bloodiest and most desperate chapters in military history, was the ultimate prize for Stalin.

The Knight’s Brigade poses in front of the Reichtag Feb. 22. The 16th Sustainment Brigade staff rode to Berlin Feb. 20 to 23 and took part in guided tours, seminars, and visits to sites of the Battle of Berlin. The ride concluded with an outing to the American Embassy.

March 9, 2018 “There was so much that was done in sustainment back in the war,” said Col. (Ret.) Peter Herrly, the Paris-based retired American colonel who manages U.S. Army Europe’s staff rides. “Even though it’s been 70-plus years, this group is learning from the echoes of the past about how to improve what they’re doing today.” Herrly led the bus down the street to the last site on the first day, the Soviet’s wet gap crossing of the Oder River, where the Knights had a bird’s eye view of the main bridge the Soviets used for their march on Berlin. The first evening ended with a discussion of the day’s events and a meal at the hotel. Day two started with a frontier battle site tour, including the Reitwien Spur, Marshal Georgi Konstantinovich Zhukov’s command post, Sachsendorf ’s

Kaiserslautern American Russians sustained an army of 2.5 million soldiers thousands of miles from their home base. Dinner at the hotel rounded out the full day. “Most battle fields I have previously toured were in the U.S. and focused on the American Revolutionary War and the American Civil War,” said 1st Lt. Michael Cavallo, a human resources officer with the brigade. “Walking the grounds of a modern battlefield from just 70 years ago has that much stronger of an impact and has been a great learning experience.” Thursday morning’s first stop was Berlin’s main train station, where the Russians mounted the attack on the heart of the German capital, the Reichstag building. Herrly led the Knights over the Moltke Bridge, just as the Russian troops did in 1945, for their frontal assault of the building that was and is the heart of the

strongpoint defense, the Saumburg feature, and a German engagement area. Herrly led the 16th Soldiers in an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of each site from where the Russians attacked and from where the Germans defended. At lunch that day Herrly led an interesting discussion on that morning’s visits from a logistics viewpoint. That afternoon the brigade hiked to the top of a German Flak Tower, one of a few German munitions strongholds the Soviets bypassed on their approach from the east into the center of the city. The staff had excellent views of the city and received an overview of the Russian route from the outskirts near Seelow into the city center from Herrly. “The sheer scale of the operation was incredible.” said Capt. Jon Bobb, the brigade’s Finance Officer and one of the unit’s premier junior leaders. “I learned more in three days than in every history class I’ve ever attended.” The group held a lively round table discussion on lessons learned on how the

and discussed how some logistical challenges from the German and Soviet Union perspective are still applicable today.” Lunch at a local restaurant provided a rest stop to warm up, as the Knights luckily had cold but clear skies all week.

The Knight’s Brigade Soldiers receive a brief at the Soviet Union World War II Memorial Feb. 22.

That afternoon the logisticians also visited the Soviet War Memorial which commemorates the Russian soldiers killed seizing the Reichstag. The group passed through the large and morose outdoor Holocaust Memorial and reflected on the artistic design, intended symbolism, and themes. They passed an unassuming parking lot with a small plaque indicating the ground above what was Hitler’s Bunker, where he and many Nazi high command officials carried out the end of the war and committed suicide. Everyone toured the former Gestapo Headquarters, a segment of the Berlin Wall, and the “Checkpoint Charlie” Museum before discussing the Cold War on the bus ride home and at that evening’s seminar to wrap up the day. On the last day, the staff participated in a leadership conference at the Embassy on the political, economic, and military landscape that drives German national security policy and the capabilities and limitations of the Bundeswehr. The visit concluded with a German army perspective given by Oberst I.G. Stuss from the German Army Headquarters in Strasbourg. The brigade, the State Department, and the Bundeswehr discussed issues concerning theater sustainment, interoperability, and multinational readiness. Ironically, according to Schultz, the predecessor of today’s German army pioneered staff rides. After their defeat to Napoleon at Jena, the Prussians had a deep, collective group think about war and reformed their army in several ways, many of which other Western armies have adopted. One of the items the reformers came up with was the staff ride, in which they took their junior leaders on horseback to battlefields to walk, talk, and reenact the battles to see what they could have done differently.
