Gen. Harrigian: Readiness, posture, partnerships are key mission priorities Gen. Jeff L. Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa commander, delivers his first address as commander during a change of command ceremony held at Ramstein Air Base, May 1. Less than 24 hours after officially assuming command, U.S. Air Force Gen. Jeff rey Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, highlighted his key mission priorities for USAFE-AFAFRICA’s area of responsibility spanning 104 countries in three different continents on Ramstein Air Base, May 2. Harrigian identified USAFEAFAFRICA’s continued readiness, posture and partnerships as focal points in maintaining near-peer competitor deterrence and continued global peace. “I’m primarily focused on our people,” said Harrigian. “It underpins everything we do and it’s really our greatest advantage. I think as you look at our people and the larger mission areas, it will come down to readiness and ensuring we have our force properly prepared.” See PRIORITIES, Page 2
Exercise Operation Varsity: 2nd Down by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Members of the 86th Airlift Wing and surrounding Kaiserslautern Military Community concluded the second installment of Exercise Operation Varsity, an exercise to enhance full spectrum readiness, May 10 on Ramstein Air Base. During the exercise, personnel assigned to the 86th AW were tested on their ability to survive and operate while contested by near-peer adversaries and asymmetrical threats. Exercise Operation Varsity tested the processes and procedures of our personnel while under increased levels of stress in a chemical, biological,
radiological, and nuclear environment, explained leadership. Through multiple simulated attacks, Ramstein’s Airmen were evaluated on their ability to sustain an attack, assess damage and impact to operations, re-establish necessary missions, and return to normal operational warfighting capabilities. “Despite the several challenges and high expectations we place on Airmen, they continue to excel both inside and outside their areas of expertise.” said Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th AW commander. Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th Airlift Wing command chief, See OPERATION VARSITY, Page 3

Page 2 PRIORITIES from Page 1 Exercise Operation Varsity, led by U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, is one instance of the readiness Harrigian underlined. Throughout the duration of the exercise, service members and Department of Defense civilians responded to simulated events like aircraft mishaps, active shooters, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive attacks. Exercise Operation Varsity 01, the first in a series of readiness exercises held throughout the year on Ramstein, resulted in an entire year’s worth of inspections completed in a five-day period. The second mission priority outlined by Harrigian is posture. Posture would mean ensuring USAFEAFAFRICA is in a proper stance for any situation and is able to react with the speed that would be required, Harrigian said. Continuing to build on partner-
ships across Europe and Africa was the third and final mission priority provided by Harrigian to maintain near-peer competitor deterrence and promote global peace. “The third one, naturally, is our partnerships and how we continue to build the trust and confidence in them,” said Harrigian. “I’m a firm believer you can’t surge trust. It’s built over time and those partnerships, whether that’s building capacity or just the ability to have the access basing and overflight we need, are fundamental to our ability to execute the mission.” Lessons learned at his prior assignment, U.S. Air Forces Central Command and Combined Force Air Component commander, translate well in his ability to carry out the mission priorities he’s outlined for USAFE-AFAFRICA moving forward. “From a partnership perspective, I got to know a lot of the key senior leaders from many of the nations contributing to the efforts in (the Middle

East),” said Harrigian. “It’s been very helpful for me to transfer those relationships as I came from Qatar back to Germany.” In terms of partnerships, Harrigian recognizes occasional disagreements during communication but sees the value in having multiple different perspectives. “My assessment is there is a recognition this part of the world is very dynamic right now,” said Harrigian. “There’s going to be times when we have different views, but that’s good. Everyone brings an important perspective to the table and having the ability to just get around the table and talk about it as partners with common interests is really helpful.” In closing remarks, Harrigian expressed gratitude to USAFEAFAFRICA Airmen and an eagerness to get started in his new position. “I’m humbled to have this opportunity to be on their team,” said Harrigian. “I say that to our Airmen but also to all of our joint and part-
nered allied nations. This is a great opportunity to work with some very talented folks. The reputation of USAFE-AFAFRICA is truly spectacular when you look at the history of everything that’s been accomplished. For me and my wife to be a part of that is truly humbling. I’m eager to get started, fired up to get after it, and look forward to getting out and meeting as many folks as I can.” In addition to his positions as commander for AFCENT and, currently, USAFE-AFAFRICA, Harrigian has commanded at the flight, squadron and wing levels. Harrigian is also a command pilot and has accumulated more than 4,100 flight hours on aircraft ranging from the F-22, F-15C, A/OA-37 and MQ-1. During these 4,100 flight hours, Harrigian has flown combat missions in support of Desert Storm, Just Cause and Inherent Resolve. Among many other major awards and decorations, Harrigian is a Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient.

435 Construction Training Squadron restores WWII memorial in France Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen assigned to the 435th Construction Training Squadron applied their skills to restore a WWII memorial, April 30. The memorial is home to an engine that belonged to an aircraft shot down by enemy forces during D-Day. After years of weathering, the case surrounding the engine lost its clarity and made it very difficult to see the monument. Before arriving to Picauville, the 435th CTS team built a new display case at their compound near Ramstein Air Base and transported it in a trailer, 480 miles to the memorial. “It was a real honor to be able to come out here,” said Staff Sgt. Jeremy Oare, 435th CTS structural craftsman. “When we showed up, we removed the old case and scraped off some of the old paint chipping off underneath the galvanized steel. Then we taped and re-painted everything.” Oare and his teammates worked hour after hour refurbishing the memorial. When it was time to install

the new display case, the entire team carefully lifted it over the engine as to not damage the historical artifact or the case itself. Once the case was in place, the Airmen fixed it to the pedestal and sealed the cracks to prevent moisture from seeping in. “It’s such a big improvement,” said Airman 1st Class Rachel Miller, 435th CTS aircraft arresting systems apprentice. “The old [case] had been sitting out for a while.” Miller said it was rewarding to work on a project tied to WWII, and being in the small town of Picauville while learning about its history felt authentic. Following the 11-hour work day, Col. Steven J. Jantz, 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and 435th Air Expeditionary Wing vice commander; Philippe Catherine, Picauville mayor; members of Picauville Se Souvient, the organization that oversees the memorial; and members of the community gathered for a ceremony to give thanks to the Airmen who refurbished the memorial. “I was very moved by the renovation work done by the Air Force team from Ramstein,” said Denis Dennebouy, Picauville Se Souvient president through an interpreter. “At the beginning of the process, I just didn’t believe it would happen. For us, it was like a miracle to see an American team coming here, not for an official event, but to work on the monument, to accomplish extensive work for our organization because we are just a small group. It’s something we will never forget.” After the ceremony, Dr. Jeffrey McGovern, 435th AGOW historian, gave a tour of the aircraft crash site associated with the memorial.

The mayor of Picauville and the organization that oversees the memorial recognized and gave thanks to the Airmen who refurbished the memorial.
“We are one of the last troop carrier groups to come across the cotentin,” said McGovern recalling the story of the downed aircraft. “By the time the 435th comes across, we’re starting to receive anti-aircraft fire... on the left element as the group flies over, they take the most flak and we lose two airplanes with the paratroopers inside.” One of the airplanes exploded in the sky losing all aircrew members and paratroopers. The other airplane caught fire and crashed into the ground losing all aircrew and 14 out of the 17 paratroopers inside. “They crashed right around this town of Picauville,” he continued. “And so, the people of Picauville have taken it upon themselves for over two decades to commemorate the troop carrier folks.” Before the Airmen headed back to Ramstein, the people of Picauville
thanked them once more and extended a warm welcome back to their home. “I have never seen a community so grateful to America in general, and U.S. military in particular, than the people we met in Picauville,” said Capt. Claude Betene A Dooko, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air advisor flight commander, and interpreter. “Normandy is full of monuments and other symbols serving as a constant reminder of the locals’ gratefulness. As an American service member who has been in more than 10 different countries, I never felt more welcomed anywhere else than in Normandy.” June 6 of this year marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Picauville, among dozens of other locations in the Normandy region, will host ceremonies to commemorate those who fought to liberate France.

A brief history of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month by Master Sgt. Dennis Valerio 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage month, a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders across the United States. The term Asian American Pacific encompasses the Asia continent and all the Pacific islands. Like most of the commemorative months, the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage was originated with a congress bill. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first young Japanese fisherman named Manjiro Nakanohama known as John Mung, who arrived to the United States on May 7, 1873. Also, he was considered as the first ambassador to Japan. Furthermore, May 10, 1869, marks the anniversary of the first transcontinental railroad in which a majority of the workers were Chinese immigrants. These labor workers were responsible for laying railroad tracks despite the labor intensive and hazardous tasks. On June 30, 1977, Representative Frank Horton of New York and
https://www.FindItGuide.com/
Representative Norman Mineta of California introduced the House Joint Resolution 540 to proclaim the first 10 days of May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Week. The same year, Senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar resolution, Senate Joint Resolution 72. Unfortunately, neither of these resolutions were passed by the congress. Later the next year of June 19, 1978, Representative Horton introduced the House Resolution 1007. This resolution proposed the President of the United States to designate the seventh day period as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Week. This joint resolution was passed by the House of the Senate and successfully signed by President Jimmy Carter on Oct. 5, 1978, declaring as Public Law 95-419. The public law amended the original bill directing the president to issue a proclamation for the seventh day period beginning on May 4, 1979, as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Week. During the course of next decade, the president passed

annual proclamations for the Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Week until May 9, 1990, when President George H.W. Bush signed Public Law 101-283. This approved bill passed by the congress expanding from a week of observance to a month. Finally, on Oct. 23, 1992, congress passed the Public Law 102-450 designating May of each year as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. This year, April 30, U.S. President
Donald J. Trump addressed the Presidential Proclamation of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2019, commemorating the accomplishments of Asian Americans’ and Pacific Islanders’ heritage contribution to the enrichment of the country and defined history. Additionally, the president encouraged all Americans to learn about the Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander heritage and to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities.

Darbin gives blood regularly and one of her donated units of blood was transfused to LRMC patient Clarissa Masquef following a difficult childbirth in February 2018. Photo by Colleen Urban
by Stacy Sanning Donor Recruiter and Public Affairs Officer, Armed Services Blood Program - Europe Almost exactly one year after her son was born, Clarissa Masquef, searched out an Armed Services Blood Program blood drive at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center on Ramstein to donate the gift of life Feb. 25.
Can I donate?
Many people can donate blood, platelets and plasma to help save lives! You can probably donate if:
• you are 18 or older, weigh at least 116 pounds and have been free of cold/flu symptoms for three days. • you have not received a tattoo overseas in the past 12 months (tattoos in most U.S. states require a one week wait, overseas and non-FDA regulated states require a 12-month wait). • you have not lived in Western Europe (including Germany) for more than 5 years total since 1980. • it has been more than 12 months since you were last in Iraq, Afghanistan, Djibouti or Niger. • More details at www.militaryblood.dod. mil/donors/can_i_donate.aspx or call the Armed Services Blood Program Europe at DSN 590-5885 or CIV 063719464-5885.
The ASBP holds all blood drives on U.S. military installations overseas, with plenty of support from sponsoring units, local American Red Cross chapters and other organizations. Masquef knew she had to donate blood because someone else’s donation saved her life after her son was born. After a challenging pregnancy and an even more difficult labor and delivery, Masquef lost a lot of blood trying to deliver her son, Jaxon, and had to have an emergency cesarean section. The Mother Baby Unit staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center told her that she would need a blood transfusion. She ended up receiving two units of blood, donated by two different people. “Before she went in for the C-section, it was really nerve racking because you could see she had lost a lot of blood, it was all over the floor,” said Clarissa’s husband, Air Force Staff Sgt. Corey Masquef, a Pavement and Equipment Craftsman with the 435th Construction and Training Squadron at Ramstein. “It felt better to know that there was blood available on the spot for Clarissa when she needed it,” Corey said. The transfusions helped Clarissa recuperate enough to be able to leave the hospital with baby Jaxon. Thanks to the blood someone donated, Jaxon is growing up with his mother at his side. Clarissa gets to raise
her son, run 5K races with him, create beautiful art for her family and their community, work as a bartender with the 86th Force Support Squadron on Ramstein and move forward on her goal to earn a degree in psychology. “It was kind of like when you fall down and someone is reaching a hand out to help you up,” said Clarissa. “I am truly grateful to the two people who donated blood.” Clarissa had no idea that while in the LRMC Mother Baby Unit last
May 17, 2019 year, she came very close to meeting one of the donors whose blood helped her. Without donors, there would be no blood for patients. Army Sgt. Paula Darbin has been donating blood since she was 16 years old, never knowing where it went, but happy to help. When Darbin tragically lost her 17-year-old daughter Caitlin in a 2015 car accident, the family agreed to donate her organs. Caitlin’s lasting legacy was a gift for another. Just two years later, her son Justin was stabbed and received three units of blood during his treatment. “It came full circle. I knew I had to keep donating because someone donated for my son,” said Darbin. “I look at Justin now and I know he would not have made it without getting the blood he needed.” As a licensed practical nurse in the LRMC Mother Baby Unit, Darbin saw how mothers and babies benefit from blood donated at ASBP blood drives. She said she never imagined that the blood she donated might come right back to someone in this community, let alone a patient getting care where Darbin worked. “I always thought it might go to someone downrange,” Darbin said. Just days after she moved from the Mother Baby Unit to a new position in the LRMC Education Division, Darbin’s blood was sent to the Mother Baby Unit for Clarissa. Darbin eventually got to meet Clarissa in late March and see firsthand how her blood helped a fellow mother. “To actually get to meet Clarissa, it gave a sort of closure to everything that happened to my son and my daughter,” said Darbin. “It’s even more special

when you get to see someone who was helped because of your donation. It’s like we are all paying it forward.” Darbin’s daughter’s organ donation helped someone else, donated blood helped her son, and Darbin’s donated blood helped Clarissa and her family. Continuing the circle of selflessness, Clarissa’s February blood donation was shipped to the U.S. Naval Hospital in Naples, Italy. The Armed Services Blood Program - Europe, based out of Landstuhl, provides blood to the Naples military hospital to help emergency and surgery patients or to go on further in support of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa and Navy’s Sixth Fleet. Continue paying it forward Clarissa emphasizes the importance of donating blood and helping the community. “It helps not only service members, but family members too,” she said. “You can save anybody. You can save him [gesturing to her son Jaxon], me, your neighbors or coworkers.” After receiving blood that helped her, Clarissa said she knew she wanted to donate blood as soon as she was eligible. Potential donors have to wait one year after receiving a blood transfusion. Clarissa had always wanted to
donate blood but wasn’t able to when she was active duty in the Army because she was under the minimum weight requirement. “This was my first time being eligible and it felt really nice to be able to this time,” Clarissa said. “I feel grateful for the people who do this regularly.” The need for blood is constant. From military hospitals like LRMC who require blood for transfusions to the military units taking units of blood for live-fire exercises and real-world missions, ample supplies of blood enable medical readiness for emergency situations. Normally, whole blood donors can give blood every 56 days, or every eight weeks. In her case, Clarissa will need to wait one year from her most recent overseas tattoo. Knowing this, Clarissa made sure to donate blood before her tattoo. Because so many people in Europe are not eligible to donate blood, it is even more important for those who are eligible to take the step to donate and help others. (See sidebar for eligibility criteria) “If you’re eligible to donate, I would highly advise you to do it,” said Clarissa. “That’s the result,” pointing to her son Jaxon toddling through the living room. “If you can donate do it, because we all have to rely on each other,” Corey added.

Baumholder Arts and Crafts Center receives modernization grant The Arts and Crafts Center on Smith Barracks, Baumholder, was recently awarded 41,000 dollars from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to help modernize the program.
by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command Europe Public Affairs The Arts and Crafts Center on Smith Barracks was recently awarded 41,000 dollars from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to help modernize the program. The grant comes from a funding authority made by Installation Management Command in the amount of 810,642 dollars for Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Arts and Crafts Modernization Initiative Expenses. Army garrisons worldwide submitted requests for a portion of the funding in January, to include U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz. Competing for the grant required a valid justification on behalf of USAG RP Family and MWR, according to Janna Henderson, Nonappropriated Funds Support Division chief. “We developed a new business strategy to respond to changing trends and high customer demand for unique, customized items,” Henderson
said. “The strategy moves away from traditional retail craft store operations toward production of services and products such as plaques, trophies, uniforms, embellishments, engraving, sublimation and more.” The grant will allow current equipment and software to be replaced with newer models and versions, enabling the center to expand offerings and provide customers with new capabilities. “I believe Baumholder Military Community members will appreciate the convenience of shopping near home to attain high-quality, customized products locally, saving travel time and money not having to drive the distance to Kaiserslautern or Ramstein areas for similar items and services,” said Joan Fortin, center manager. Since she began working at the center last June, Fortin has seen sales and demand of services increase, despite sometimes lengthy turnaround and production times for customer projects. The increase is due to the highly talented, friendly and accommodating staff, she said.
“The new equipment and software upgrades will not only decrease production time, but will also give the staff more creative room to further improve services, offering unique and customized products,” Fortin said. Elizabeth Lane, Family and MWR supervisory informational technology specialist, explained some of the upgrades community members can expect. The current sublimation printer will be replaced with a new printer that will provide “more vibrant colors, better resolution and is perfect for transforming favorite family photographs into beautiful mugs or shirts that can be used every day,” Lane said. A new computer with the latest version of a graphics suite will help the staff design images with greater control and efficiency. Software purchases will allow the center to maximize the use of existing hardware, such as the embroidery machine, Lane said. “Customized embroidery projects are difficult to create with the current software, but with the new software, the sky is the limit on

the customized gifts that can be made.” The facility will also purchase a vinyl cutter, allowing creation of unit T-shirts, customized awards, banners and other unique items. A small facility renovation has begun in order to accommodate the new equipment. The new services and products are expected within the next six months, Lane said. There are several services and programs community members can enjoy in the meantime though, Fortin said. The center offers classroom rentals for birthday parties, balloon services, and event decorations such as centerpieces, balloon columns, arches and backdrops. They also host the Grapes and Graffiti sip and paint program monthly at Kazabra Club on Vogelweh, and the Warrior Zone and Tavern on the Rock on Smith Barracks. The Arts and Crafts Center is located in Bldg. 8104 and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. To find out more, call 0611-143-531-2895 or visit baumholder.armymwr.com.

Motorcycle safety begins with proper training
May is Motorcycle Safety Month, and riders must be properly trained and licensed before they can begin enjoying the open road. Photo by Alexander Kirch/Shutterstock.com
by Leah Holly Installation Management Command Europe Public Affairs May is Motorcycle Safety Month, and Installation Management Command offers motorcycle safety courses to keep riders safe while enjoying the open road. “Active-duty service members, civilian employees, contractors and family members are required to have a U.S. state-issued motorcycle license or endorsement on a current U.S. state driver’s license to operate a motorcycle in Europe,” said Herbert Nold, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety specialist. “Additionally, riders are required to complete a four-hour approved U.S. Army in Europe motorcycle orientation course and pass a 30-question written test to receive a USAREUR motorcycle license.” According to Army in Europe Regulation 190-1 ( Jan. 11), once those requirements are met, civilian employees, contractors and family members can take their paperwork to their local vehicle processing cen-
ter to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their U.S. Forces Certificate of License or obtain a U.S. Forces Motorcycle Certificate of License. “Active-duty service members have a few more requirements than civilians to complete before obtaining their motorcycle license,” Nold said. Military applicants who don’t have a current Motorcycle Safety Foundation card, but do have a current state or country motorcycle license or endorsement to their driver’s license, will receive an eightday temporary motorcycle license that will be issued three duty days before the beginning of a MSF course. MSF training is for activeduty service members only and takes place on Kapaun Air Station across from the Kapaun Vehicle Processing Center. People can visit the Army IMCOM Registration System link at https://imc. army.mil/airs (Common Access Card is required) to view available classes in their area.
When attending the initial MSF Basic Riders Course in Kaiserslautern, loaner bikes are provided, Nold said. Students must wear protective gear to include a helmet, gloves, motorcycle jacket (if available), long-sleeve shirt, long pants or jeans and sturdy boots. Service members must have a valid MSF card to attend the Basic Rider Course, which is only valid for 12 months. Within that 12-month time frame, they must attend the MSF Experienced Rider Course or Motorcycle Sport Rider Course (the course depends on the type of motorcycle owned). Both courses are valid for five years. “Driving a motorcycle to and from work or recreationally can be a lot of fun,” Nold said. “Just ensure you have the right qualifications, training and protective equipment to make for safe and enjoyable rides.” For more information about motorcycle safety or upcoming classes, contact Nold at DSN 541-2303 or civilian at 0611-143-541-2303 or email at herbert.c.nold.ln@mail.mil.

Inclement weather shortens Baumholder track, field meet
Dashiell Rogers (left) and Denver Dalpais are members of the victorious Ramstein 4x800 relay team. Both will be among the middle distance favorites in the upcoming European Championships on the Kaiserslautern track. Photo by Stephanie Leclair
by Robert Baldwin contributing writer When the public address announcer at the nine-team Baumholder track and field meet on Saturday opened the proceedings by calling “first call for the 400 meter butterfly,” he was closer to the truth than anyone could have guessed. The Ramstein Royals were the last team standing in both men and women, but the real winner was Mother Nature. A few of the teams came into the meet with smaller squads than usual. Many of the competitors had already qualified for the Euros in two weeks and were given the day off. Those who remained battled the wind, rain, cold and wet track. Lane one was under water. Both 200 meter dashes were scrapped along with all of the hurdles events. The women’s discus event was gone because of unsafe conditions in the throwing area as were both high jumps. Other events were shortened. When the meet started, it was
50 degrees with a steady downpour. When it ended it was 46 with even more rain. But the show went on and the athletes exhibited true resilience. In the women’s competition, Ramstein earned 196 points, followed by Stuttgart with 110, Vilseck 40, Black Forest Academy 23, Ansbach and Alconbury 16, Baumholder 11, and Kaiserslautern and Hohenfels had eight points each. On the men’s side, Ramstein amassed 186 points, Stuttgart 138, Black Forest Academy 60, Vilseck 52.5, Ansbach 42.5, Kaiserslautern 32, Baumholder 31, Alconbury 8 and Hohenfels 4. Ramstein’s women’s depth proved to be dominant in the middle and long distances. Stuttgart’s Linnea Meier won the 800. But the Royals trio of Alexis Pierre-Louis, Catherine Hickman and Emily Stuart finished second, third and fourth, respectively. In the 1,600 meters, Stuttgart’s outstanding sophomore McKinley
Fielding won the event by 40 seconds and enjoyed it so much she did not stop at the finish line and ran an extra lap, leaving the timers at the line scratching their heads and mumbling that she did not need to keep going. Ramstein captured the next three spots with Annika Zimmerer, Jordanne Hill and Victoria White. Any time the name Fielding is associated with a sport or event, it will be competitive. Her brother was a multiple champion in wrestling and will be competing at Belmont Abbey in North Carolina next winter. McKenzie finished second at Euros in wrestling as a sophomore. On Saturday, she teamed with Meier and two others to win the 4x800 relay by a full thirty seconds over the foursome of Hickman, Spice Harris, PierreLouis and Hill. Another Royals foursome finished third in that event. In the 3,200 meters, a Ramstein trio took the top three spots, with Kristin Lucero followed very closely by Hill and White.
Five athletes were able to get in their triple jumps with Ramstein’s Barakat Ibrahim winning and teammate Sophia Sobczak coming in third before the event was scrapped due to the dicey conditions of the runway and pit. Caprinia Goode of Ramstein was edged in the shot put by four inches by Stuttgart’s Olivia Johnson. Royals Danielle Woodward was fourth and Natalia Allen of Kaiserslautern finished fifth. Gabrielle Tarr and Yaara Smalls from Baumholder finished sixth and eighth. Casey McCollum edged Stuttgart’s Johnson to win the 100-meter dash. Royals Shannon McCray and Jillian Harris were third and fourth. Once again, the most dominant performer in the men’s field events was Kaiserslautern senior Austin Higby. Higby’s 44-10 won the shot put by eight feet over four Stuttgart throwers. His 141’05 won the discus by a staggering 27 feet over Alconbury’s Spencer Swapp. Higby was one of
Kaiserslautern American
May 17, 2019 the Kaiserslautern competitors to already qualify for the Euros, but decided to throw anyway. “I love it. I will throw anywhere in any conditions. I just love throwing,” he said in his usual calm and controlled demeanor. Higby will be a favorite to win the event at the European championships next week. In the discus, he will have to defeat Stuttgart’s Tripp Carroll, Vilseck strongman Jonas Matthews and Ogden Andrew of Ansbach, whose personal record is actually better than Higby’s. Andrew is also one of the top long jumpers. He finished second at Baumholder to Ramstein’s Thomas Bryce, whose 20-foot jump was admirable considering the conditions. Ramstein sprinter Jason Jones was also a double winner. The junior edged Lorne Huxtable of Baumholder by one half inch in the triple jump to avenge a close loss in Kaiserslautern two weeks ago. Jones jumped 40’11.50 and Huxtable 40’11.00. In the
100-meter dash, he managed a first place finish over a pair from Stuttgart. Isaiah Allen, Miquel Smith and Jalon Lewis also scored points for the Royals in the 100. Ramstein got first place finishes from Jaelon Bell in the 400 and Denver Dalpais in the 800. In the relays, the Royals took the 4x100 and the 4x800 relay. The host Buccaneers quartet of Brandon Bankston Jr., Isaiah Daep, Jacob Gregg and Jesse Espinoza were victorious in the 1,600 sprint medley relay, edging out Black Forest Academy. The SMR is made up of a 400meter, two 200-meters and an 800-meter run. Tomorrow, Ramstein and Kaiserslautern travel to Vilseck in their final tune up before Euros. The forecast there is high 60s with sunshine, which will be a true indicator of how the athletes perform. The KMCC will be hosting all five sports in the European Championships next week. The men’s and
women’s soccer competitions are May 20 to 23. The men’s
Page 17 and women’s track meet is scheduled for May 24 to 25.
Baseball and softball are slated for May 23 to 25.

The World Cultural Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks: one of the most exciting places in the world Courtesy of Völklinger Hütte A visit to the World Cultural Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks is an adventure: the visitor can go down deep into the dark corridors of the burden shed and climb up to the lofty heights of the blast furnace viewing-platform. The multi-media introduction to the sintering-plant takes the visitor on a journey through time, from the beginnings of the Völklingen Ironworks right up to the present day. From the roof of the ore shed, a view opens up over the town of Völklingen and the active works of Saarstahl AG. An impressive panorama at any time of year, both by night and by day. At the granulating-plant, the laid out picnic area, located between colourful aquatic plants and uncompromising steel offers visitors a chance to relax. Then there is the ascent to the top platform 27 metres above ground: where the raw materials were once tipped into the blast furnaces. If anyone feels like going up a little further, they can climb up to the viewing-platform of the
blast furnace group from which an incomparable panorama can be seen. The top platform, spanning a length of 200 metres is now open to visitors: altogether an impressive experience. The tour continues by walking via the coal track, with its new 20 metre long spiral chute, over the blower shed footbridge into the blower shed. Here the blowers can be seen: giants of iron and steel which generated the blast that was then channelled into the blast furnaces. A tour of the World Cultural Heritage Site, with more than 7,000 metres of exciting and well signposted walkways will generally take between two and three hours. Editor’s note: The opening of the exhibition “Pharaohs-Gold – 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian high culture” will start May 18. Opening hours until November 3, are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission fee is Euro 17. Children, youth under 18, and students up to 27-years-old with students’ ID card are admitted free. For more information visit www. voelklinger-huette.org.

3,000 years of Egyptian high culture exhibit at Völklinger Hütte Courtesy of Völklinger Hütte Twenty-five years ago, in December 1994, the Völklinger Hütte became the first industrial monument listed in the United nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s list of world heritage sites. During this anniversary year, the site offers a variety of exciting projects. From May 18 through Nov. 24, visitors get to discover the world of ancient Egyptian high culture. More than 150 masterpieces are displayed, some of them for the first time. The exhibition “Pharaohs-Gold – 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian high culture” shows outstanding gold treasures. For the ancient Egyptians gold had an exceptionally large religious and symbolic strength, and was the symbol of eternity and the holiest metal. They therefore referred to gold as the flesh of the gods, as it isn’t transient and non-destructible.

Ramses II, Tutankhamun, Echnaton and Nofretete, are names of Egyptian pharaohs that still fuel our imagination to this day. The fascination of the pharaohs includes pyramids such as the Chephr-
Pyramid and legendary tombs and gold treasures such as those of Tutankhamun. The pharaohs were at the center of ancient Egyptian culture and descended from the gods according to ancient Egyptian ideas. The ancient Egyptians wished for eternal life which gold was the symbol for. One of the most fascinating notions of ancient Egyptian mythology is the “night drive” of the sun god Re, who embarked on a journey through the night kingdom, to be reborn the next morning at sunrise. On earth, in the faith of the ancient Egyptians, the pharaohs ensured the order and balance of the world and thus held the world together at its core. The burial objects made of gold were supposed to make the pharaohs immortal. The gold exhibits talk about the world of gods and the imaginary world of the Egyptians. Ancient Egyptian gold must be understood in its original meaning as sacred
material filled with magical protection, which accompanied kings and other dignitaries in this world and beyond. For ancient Egyptians, the magic of gold was based not on material value, but on the symbolic strength of gold that kings, princesses or court officials wore in life as jewelry and which they were buried with. Many gold treasures were lost to looting, and yet the preserved gold treasures give a comprehensive impression of the highly developed capability of ancient Egyptian gold workers and jewelers. Above all, however, the gold of the pharaohs is an expression of a world of faith that continues to fascinate to this day. Opening hours until November 3, are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission fee is 17 Euro. Children, youth under 18, and students up to 27-years-old with students’ ID card are admitted free. Forget air conditioners – use your rollladens wisely by FindItGuide.com In America, we are used to everything being air-conditioned. Heck, in some states, the only time you don’t have air conditioning is when you run from your car to your house. The southern states know it all too well. In Germany, rarely do you come across air conditioning. And if you do get some relief from the summer heat, it likely is not at your house. Well have no fear. German houses have a built in cooling system that doesn’t cost you any money and it is 100% environmentally friendly! One building feature that has not caught on in the states is the rolladens you find over every window in your house. These roll-down, black-out
shades turn your rooms pitch black, which can make for a comfortable sleeping environment (but difficult to wake up to). Whether you have the manual or electric version, you have surely come to love these handy inventions by now. Without air conditioning at your house, summer time can be unpleasant, especially during the dog-days. If you would like to keep your house cool during the day, follow these simple steps: • As soon as you wake up, open every door and window in your house • Allow the house to cool all the way up until you are about to leave for the day • Close all windows and doors, plus shut all your rolladens while you are away from the house
When you return home from a day of work, you will notice your house is about the same temperature it was when you left it in the morning. What you have just done is virtually reduce your solar heat gain to zero. Additionally, because many houses in Germany are built from stone or concrete materials, they keep the cool in very efficiently. Some other keep – cool ideas: • Change your sheets to cotton which have much better breathability • Get a buckwheat pillow - the spaces between the hulls allow heat to escape • Rotate your ceiling fan counterclockwise (clockwise in the winter) • Use a cold cloth on your neck • Take a cooler shower so steam
doesn’t get trapped in the house • Sleep downstairs! Just because you are on the couch, doesn’t mean you are in trouble • Grill more! No sense in heating up your kitchen to cook when you have a perfectly suitable place outside (and there is no clean up!)

ST. MARTIN
PICTURESQUE LITTLE VILLAGE ON THE WINE ROAD
by MilitaryInGermany.com St. Martin (referred to as Sankt Martin in German) is one of the loveliest villages on the “German Wine Road” in Rheinland-Pfalz. St. Martin has the distinction of being named after a saint. You may recall that St. Martin gave half of his cloak to a beggar who was only wearing rags during a harsh winter. The area around St. Martin has been inhabited since Roman times. Nestled in the hills and surrounded by vineyards, this may sound like the ideal paradise to visit for its beauty, wine, food, shopping and more. What to See Kropsburg Castle was built in the 13th century and is now a restaurant and tavern. It first served as a residence of the Bishops of Speyer and then later passed into the hands of the Lords of Dalberg. The castle was destroyed in 1689, however, the outer bailey was rebuilt, which now houses the restaurant Castle Tavern at Kropsburg. You will find this castle restaurant in the countryside above the village of St. Martin. There are several options available for wine tasting. The Winery, the old chateau located at Maikammerer Strasse 7, is close to the Weingut Rössler – Schneider, which is on the same road at number 12. Wine sampling can also be found at the Wine & Sekthof Cutter (located at number 48) and the Winery Gernert (located at number 39). There are many other wineries in St. Martin too and you don’t have to look very hard to find one.
Weingut Joachim Raabe is not only a place to purchase and taste wine, you can also find delectable seasonal and regional specialty dishes. The traditional family-run restaurant and vineyard is reasonably priced. Try the Flammkuchen, which is a type of pizza with a thin cracker-like crust. It is generously covered in crème fraiche, topped with the traditional onions and bacon, and sometimes comes with another seasonal vegetable such as broccoli. Saint Martiner Castell is a hotel and restaurant and offers light German cuisine and an international menu.
This restaurant is reasonably priced and the traditional dishes are prepared with fresh local produce. There are other places to eat in the village of St. Martin, and perhaps in your wanderings you will come across a little gem of a place to eat. Getting There St. Martin is just under one hour southeast of Kaiserslautern, approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes south of Wiesbaden and 1 hour and 30 minutes northwest of Stuttgart. Go to DB Bahn online for train information.
