37th AS, 435th CRG project air power Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Jimmie D. Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
CHIEVRES AIR BASE, BELGIUM
While operating on a global scale, the U.S. Air Force thrives on the ability to project its air power as far as possible. One of the ways Airmen project airpower is through strategically placed landing zones.
Recently, members from the 37th Airlift Squadron and the 435th Contingency Response Group worked together to survey and test a new landing zone at Chievres Air Base, Belgium. “We find and use landing zones all across Europe for the purposes of training and projecting air power,” See AIR POWER, Page 2

Air Force transitions to a single combat uniform Story and graphics by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs
WASHINGTON, D.C. AFNS Air
Force leaders announced the service will move to a single combat utility uniform, adopting the Operational Camouflage Pattern, or OCP, already in use by the Army and Airmen in combat zones and in certain jobs across the Air Force. Starting Oct. 1, 2018, Airmen who have serviceable OCPs may wear the uniform, and Airmen can purchase OCPs at Army and Air Force Exchange Services at the following locations: Aviano Air Base, Italy; Charleston Air Force Base, South Carolina; Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina; and MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. These initial locations will allow uniform
manufacturers to produce additional stocks for other locations, eventually outfitting the total force in the coming months. The service will fully transition to
OCPs by April 1, 2021. Air Force leaders decided to transition to the OCP following feedback from Airmen that it is the best, battletested utility uniform available. It will
also eliminate the need to maintain two separate uniforms – one for in-garrison and one for deployments – and it is a See UNIFORM, Page 9

Page 2 AIR POWER from Page 1 said Lt. Col. Brady Vaira, 435th CRG deputy commander. “In this case, we are using an unused runway at Chievres.” Another way the Air Force effectively projects air power is by training and perfecting skillsets to be prepared for even unknown conditions. “This new landing zone measures approximately 3051 feet by 120 feet,” said Maj. Jared Sorensen, 37th AS C-130J Super Hercules pilot. “It allows us to practice austere landing conditions in small landing zone environments. Most runways are 9,000 to 10,000 feet or longer, but downrange it is common for us to land in 3,000 feet or less.”
May 18, 2018
The new landing zone helps members of the 435th CRG train their landing zone controllers, and expand the capability of the airfield. The end goal for the new landing zone is to open it to all 29 NATO partners for the purposes of training and projecting air power, explained Lt. Col. Craig Lindstrom, 424th Air Base Squadron commander. “The purpose of the new LZ is to provide a training platform for tactical aircraft that can come in here and practice assault landings and assault take-offs,” said Lindstrom. “This is a unique opportunity because (the new landing zone) is in the European theatre and is accessible to our units and partners.

Members of the 37th Airlift Squadron and 435th Contingency Response Group were testing and surveying the new landing zone’s integrity before opening it for future use.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern Military Community Fire Emergency Service members and American Red Cross members handed out two hundred free smoke detector batteries and fire safety information brochures to customers at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center May 10 at Ramstein Air Base. Volunteers from the American Red Cross also visited single family residences on Ramstein May 12 where they provided important information and tips concerning what to do in the event of a fire. These efforts were designed to emphasize continued awareness on fire safety. Mrs. Phyllis Cohn, American Red Cross regional program director for armed forces, in Ramstein, acknowledges it’s easy for families to neglect proper precautions for fire safety. “People always think it’s not going to happen to me,” Cohn said. “So, what we’re doing at the American Red Cross with our partners at the fire department here is to give them the education they need to make smart decisions about their home fire safety. This is about protecting your families. There are really simple little things you can do to be ready just in case something should happen.”
According to the American Red Cross at the KMCC, the following are precautions military members and their families can take to maximize their safety before or during a fire. • Test alarms monthly. If you do not hear the alarm, change the battery and retest. If the alarm still does not sound, replace the unit. • Replace batteries twice a year or when you hear the low battery sound. Daylight Saving Time is an easy-to-remember time to change them. • Have a plan. Sit down with loved ones and coordinate two home escape plans. Plan how to leave the home and establish a safe meeting point for family members to reunite after escaping the fire. • Have a “go-kit.” A go-kit is a bag or backpack containing prescription drugs, blankets, stuffed animals for children, food and leashes for pets, and any other items that will make a temporary relocation easier for a family during the event of a fire. This kit should be placed near the door where it can be grabbed easily. • Store important documents in a fire box. If families do not own a fire box, place important documents in a seal-proof bag and place the bag in the freezer. The freezer will likely be the least damaged object in the home after a fire due to its temperature.
Taking necessary precautions in preparation for a fire is an important first step, but remaining attentive during every-day activities is equally important to prevent fires from ever happening in the first place. “If we’re talking about fires in the homes, the biggest causes are related to cooking,” said Tech. Sgt. Michael Hyde, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron fire prevention non-commissioned
officer in charge. “There are a lot of distractions these days. It’s very easy to not pay attention to the food you’re cooking but people need to remain aware and not leave their food unattended.” Above all, remember to contact the fire department during the event of a fire. For families living off-base, dial 112. For families living on-base, dial 06371-47112.
Nine volt smoke detector batteries are displayed next to plastic fire chief hats and fidget-spinners displaying the phone number, 112, which an individual should dial in the case of an emergency, May 11 on Ramstein Air Base. The American Red Cross recommends families to test their smoke alarms on a monthly basis and to replace them every six months.

86th MDS simulates burn victim evacuation
86th Medical Squadron Critical Care Air Transport Team Airmen move a simulated burn victim onto a C-5 Galaxy aircraft during a burn victim evacuation exercise May 9 on Ramstein Air Base. The 86th MS is a high-paced squadron that trains constantly and is ready to respond any moment, day or night, to save lives across Europe and Africa.
by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Squadron is a high-paced squadron that trains constantly and is ready to respond any moment, day or night, to save lives across Europe and Africa. As part of that training, the 86th MDS brought together the Critical Care Air Transport Team, the Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, and En-Route Patient Staging Flight to each play their parts in a burn victim evacuation exercise. In the simulation scenario, two severely burned patients had been extracted from a burning building in Africa. The CCAT, AES, and ERPSF were tasked with transporting them to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. To add to the realism of training, the 86th MDS uses high-tech mannequins that can mimic human conditions with features such as a simulated pulse, lungs, and heart rate. Nurses can perform such actions as injecting fluids and monitoring vitals. Observers can monitor and control outputs from the mannequins via laptops. For example, an observer can drop the mannequin’s blood pressure
and observe the team’s responses. “This exercise is as close to a real- life mission as we can get,” said Maj. Kirk Smith 86th MDS CCATT critical care nurse. “It starts from the time a CCATT is alerted. We use bare transportation like we would for a real mission to get our team and 700 pounds of equipment to the aircraft.” Smith said that the exercise incorporates five units and ties all the pieces together like a real mission. The CCATT and AES teams are both trained to care for patients inflight. The teams work side-by-side to quickly transform an aircraft into a flying hospital, with equipment such as fluids, oxygen machines, and stanchion litter systems. The CCATT teams specialize in critical care patients, while AES handles non-critical patients, and installs and connects equipment to the aircraft. The ERPSF handles transportation to and from the aircraft. Smith explained that CCATTs often do simulation training in the lab and work in the hospital, but this training covers more. “This training is so important for CCATTs because it’s not just
the medical part we get to train on but also the setup of the aircraft, experience of working closely with Aeromedical Evacuation Airmen, the unique transport of the patient not just on the plane but on the ambulance bus with the ERPSF, and lastly the handoff of a patient to the intensive care unit at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center,” Smith said. Smith said that the dangerous part of transporting patients is not found in lab settings or in the air. “A lot of times the most dangerous part is when you’re transporting the patient from the intensive care unit to the bus, from the bus to the aircraft, and back onto the bus and to the ICU,” Smith said. “You have so many moving parts, all your lines are hanging out. There’s a lot of moving pieces, and that’s when you have to be the most vigilant with the patient.” These dangerous parts of transport are part of why realistic exercises are so important. Through consistent training in realistic scenarios, the 86th MDS remains vigilant and ready to accomplish its mission of delivering professional, reliable, innovative care, whether in the air or on the ground.

Fuel card abuse leads to fines, loss of license by Robert Szostek U.S. Army Customs Agency- Europe Public Affairs
WIESBADEN, GERMANY The Army & Air Force Exchange Service fuel card allows U.S. personnel to fill their vehicles with tax-free fuel in Germany. Yet some individuals aren’t grateful enough to have this moneysaving advantage and make illegal transactions by selling or giving part of their rations to people who are not authorized to have a fuel card. “Our customs investigators are constantly on the look-out for suspicious transactions,” said Fred Evans, chief of customs investigations at the USAREUR Office of the Provost Marshal. Using the system’s data base, investigators can spot many types of violations. Abuse of the fuel card can lead to hefty fines from German customs authorities and a loss of driving privileges from the U.S. side. Evans cited several violations that fuel card users must avoid. First, the card is only to be used for the vehicle it is assigned to. Using it to put gas into another car is a violation.
Evans explained that fuel card users must get a temporary fuel card if they rent a vehicle. AE Form 550-175L, the U.S. Forces POL Authorization for Rental Vehicles or Privately Owned Vehicles Registered in Europe but not in Germany, is available at all military customs offices for this purpose. Second, the person using the card may only buy the kind of fuel specified on the card. “So if you have a diesel vehicle but purchase gasoline with the diesel card, our agents will start an investigation because something illegal or improper is obviously going on,” Evans explained. Jerry cans are another problem area. While it is not unlawful to fill up a fuel can with tax-free gasoline, the cans offer tax cheats the opportunity to transport and sell tax-free gas to others who are not authorized tax-free privileges. Evans encourages anyone who sees someone using a fuel card to fill up several fuel canisters at one time to write down the license plate number and report it to customs. One recent case involved an American who for years had been selling gasoline bought with the fuel card
Courtesy graphic
to friends who were not authorized to buy tax-free fuel. German customs fined the man €22,000 and ordered him to pay €37,000 in unpaid taxes. “Abuse of the AAFES fuel card system means some regular citizens in Germany avoid paying taxes to the German government,” Evans went on. “If these losses become unacceptable, German authorities could abolish the system and make U.S. Forces members pay the full price for gas that the
average German citizen pays. U.S. Army Customs Agency – Europe is taking strict action to prevent such abuse and protect our tax-free entitlements.” More information on the fuel card system is available on the AAFES website at www. aafes.com/exchange-stores/overseas/germany-fuel-ration/. Information on the temporary fuel card can be found at www.eur. army.mil/opm/customs/shorttermfuel.htm.
Don’t get ‘grilled’ on fire safety Spring has arrived! Whether you plan on having a relaxing evening with the family next to the fire pit, or having a barbeque with friends, please follow these Kaiserslautern Military Community Fire Emergency Services safety tips when preparing and using your grill or fire pit. GRILLS: • All barbeque grills must be used outdoors. Residents in Military Family Stairwell Housing are authorized to use propane grills on their balcony, but no smokers or charcoal grills. Carbon monoxide is bad for you! • Check for gas leaks on your propane grill by applying a light soap and water solution to hose connections and watch for bubbles which indicates a leak. Tighten connections or replace the hose. • Keep grill clean by removing excess grease or food buildup, and empty any trays below the grill. • On propane grills, if the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off. Wait
•
• •
•
at least 15 minutes before re-lighting it and/or go get a new bottle of propane. Only use charcoal starter fluid, no other flammable/combustible liquids. After lighting the fire, NEVER add charcoal starter fluid or any other flammable/combustible liquids. When you are finished grilling, ensure the charcoal is cold before properly disposing. Keep grills 15 feet from anything that can burn, or move those items (Military Family Stairwell Housing balconies are the exception.) Never leave your grill unattended. You might burn more than just your food.
FIRE PITS: • Always follow manufacturer’s instructions when using and storing fire pits. • Do not use fire pits on balconies or under awnings and roofs. • Choose a spot that’s at least 15 feet from combustible materials. • Your patio or driveway is a great place for your pit, as long as it’s 15
•
• • • •
feet away from your home and any combustible materials. Keep your windows closed to ensure fumes or smoke do not get inside your home. If your patio is too close to your home, choose a safe site in your yard, and clear a 10-foot diameter around the site by removing any loose grass, twigs, leaves and firewood. Do not place a fire pit too close to any trees, bushes, or shrubs. Keep a hose, bucket of water, or shovel nearby. Ensure your fire pit has an ember screen while in use. Never leave your fire unattended and ensure it is fully contained, or out, before leaving. If it is too hot and dry outside, it could be too dangerous to use your fire pit. You can check the following website for the “wildland fire index,” which has a numbering system from 1-5. Simply select “Rhineland-Pfalz” from the drop box and find Kaiserslautern on the chart. If it’s 3 or higher, don’t have a fire! http://www.dwd.de/ DE/leistungen/waldbrandgef_bl/ waldbrandgefbl.html?nn=16102

David L. Goldfein. “We spoke to and listened to Airmen on this, and the OCP was the clear choice.” “The uniform works in all climates — from Minot to Manbij — and across the spectrum of missions we perform,” Goldfein added. “It’s suitable for our Airmen working on a flightline in Northern Tier states and for those conducting patrols in the Middle East,” he said. More than 100,000 Airmen have been issued or are already wearing OCPs or equivalent two-piece flight suits —from Airmen deployed to Air Forces Central Command, to those serving in Air Force Special Operations Command, and most recently, aircrews in Air Mobility Command and defenders in Air Force Global Strike Command. Preserving service & squadron identity As with the Battle Dress Uniform, or BDU, worn by all services until about 10 years ago, the OCP Airmen wear will have distinctive Air Force features. The name tape and Air Force lettering will be a spice-brown color, and T-shirts and belts will be tan. Most rank will also be in spice-brown thread. Squadron patches will also be worn on the OCP, said Goldfein. Bringing back squadron patches was among the recommendations made by Airmen as part of the ongoing effort to revitalize squadrons. “Unit patches express squadron identity and heritage — something our Airmen are incredibly proud of and want to celebrate,” he said. Unit patches and special functional identifiers (Security Forces, Fire, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Tactical
Air Control Party, Combat Controller, etc.) will be attached to Velcro fabric on the sleeves. All patches will be in subdued colors; headquarters patches and the U.S. flag will be worn on the right shoulder, and unit patches and authorized duty identifiers will be worn on the left shoulder. Airmen can find guidance for proper wear of the uniform in the coming months via an Air Force Guidance Memorandum, followed by updates published in AFI 36-2903. Proven for better fit and functionality Feedback from the force indicated Airmen find the OCP more functional — from the slanted, Velcro chest pockets to the easily-accessible shoulder pockets. Female Airmen have made it clear that this uniform is a better fit, as well. “The Army has done considerable work to make the OCPs a better fitting uniform for female service members,” said Maj. Gen. Bob LaBrutta, director of military force management policy, deputy chief of staff for manpower, personnel and services. “The uniform comes in 20 female sizes and 37 unisex sizes. Female Airmen, cur-
rently issued the unisex uniform in U.S. Air Forces Central Command, report a better fit and higher morale as a result.” Enlisted Airmen should start to see an increase to their annual clothing allowances starting Oct. 1, 2018. “Many of our Airmen already have this uniform from their numerous deployments, so they will be able to make the transition easily,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright. “For other Airmen, we must provide enough time for their clothing allowance to fund the items to avoid out-of-pocket expenses.” Effective April 1, 2019, Airmen can purchase the uniform at any AAFES store that carries them and AAFES online services will open purchases to Airmen around October 2019. The schedule will be updated monthly on the AAFES and Air Force’s Personnel Center websites. The delay in availability allows the supply chain to produce and field enough uniforms, boots and other associated uniform items to meet both Army and Air Force requirements. Enlisted Guard and Reserve Airmen will receive the new uniform through
their unit’s clothing replacement procedures. The Air Force will also outfit Basic Military Training, Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, and Officer Training School starting October 1, 2019. “This celebrates joint warfighting excellence as OCPs will become the joint combat uniform for Airmen and Soldiers while patches and nametapes will identify our respective services,” Goldfein said. “We’ll maintain our distinctive Air Force uniforms in blues, service dress, mess dress, and PT gear.”

TODAY:
Ingredients
Spring Chicken
(for 4 people) • 4 chicken thighs and drumsticks, cut at joint • 1 cup frozen peas, defrosted • 2 medium size onions, chopped into quarters • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 20 ounces small potatoes, peeled and cut into quarters • 1 cup bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 tablespoons oil • 2 cups vegetable broth • 1 pound green asparagus • 1 cup chopped parsley • 1 lemon, juiced and zested
Preparation Heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Season chicken with salt and pepper. Put oil in pan and roast chicken on all sides. Let chicken rest on a plate. Fry bacon until crispy. Remove. Put potatoes, onion and garlic in pan and roast for 3-5 minutes. Return chicken and bacon to pan. Add half of the vegetable broth and bring to boil. Move pan to oven on the medium rack for 25 minutes.
Remove 1 to 1 1/2 inches from bottom of each asparagus to not get woody asparagus. After the chicken has cooked 25 minutes, add the asparagus and remaining vegetable broth. Return chicken to oven for another 15 minutes. Remove and add peas. Return to oven for 3-4 minutes. Chop parsley. In a separate bowl, add 4 tablespoons of lemon juice and the lemon zest to the parsley. Add 6 tablespoons from the chicken sauce. Salt and pepper to taste. This is your sauce to serve with the chicken. Divide chicken and potatoes into 4 equal portions and plate. Serve the sauce on the table for each person to portion out to their own taste. If you like to enjoy a glass of wine with your meal, try a Weissburgunder or Silvaner. If you prefer rosé wine, you can use one from the Provence or Northern Italy. If you prefer to stay local, you can use a Dornfelder rosé.

Baumholder caregivers earn CDA credentials by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Installation Management Command Directorate
BAUMHOLDER, GERMANY Two Smith Child Development Center caregivers went well beyond their typical duties to earn their Child Development Associate credentials to provide considerate, dedicated service to military youngsters and their parents. Caregivers Luz Cordero and Travis Gentry recently earned their credentials from the CDA National Credentialing Program, which provides an opportunity for caregivers of young children to exhibit their understanding, aptitude and abilities in the early childhood education field. Although becoming credentialed required extra work, it helped Cordero improve her skills and confidence, she said. “Since receiving my CDA, I feel like I have a stronger connection with the children,” said Cordero, a Child and Youth Services caregiver for infants six weeks to 18 months. “It also allowed me to communicate better with parents, because I gained more knowledge and can discuss things with them more effectively.” To become credentialed, Cordero and Gentry reviewed several childdevelopment resources, took exams, were observed by CDA professional development specialists and prepared

professional portfolios with resources and competency statements. “Some of the training didn’t seem too difficult because it dealt with things I do every day,” Cordero explained. “I felt the hardest parts were the tests. Tests are always difficult for me because I never know what to expect. But, once I read the questions, I knew from personal experience what the answers were.
So, I didn’t stress out.” For Travis Gentry, a former Air Force fire fighter, earning a CDA certification gave him a sense of accomplishment. “I think the process of attaining my CDA made me better with all of the self-reflection, gathering of resources and taking in account what I’d learned,” said Gentry, who worked as a Child and Youth Program assistant

for 17 years. “The experience made me a better caregiver and validated what I had already been doing.” Taking care of infants is more of a joy than a job, Cordero said. “I take care of the babies like I would take care of my own children,” said Cordero, who has been a CDC caregiver for four years. “It’s great when I see one of my babies who moved into another classroom, out in the community and they run over to give me a hug. They still remember me. I also have a lot of parents that leave Germany and email me pictures of how their little ones are doing — that makes me feel like family.” From fire trucks to four year olds, Gentry said he loves what he does. “Serving my country was an honor, but I feel that my role now is a different way to support the community,” Gentry said. “Although I’ve been out of the military for several years, I still have a lot of love for the military, the community and especially the families.” Though he worked hard to become credentialed, Gentry said he couldn’t have done it without the whole CDC team. “This job is not about one person — it’s a team-based job. The people I work with are amazing people from all walks of life and cultures, and everyone brings something unique and awesome to the table,” he said. “It’s also a team between the caregivers and families, because there is a holistic approach to child development.”

Branch and the Lady Raiders have one meet to go before Euros take place at Vogelweh. “It’s been amazing to have her back,” said Kaiserslautern head coach Jason Steadman. “We’ve got a really young team with Jada being one of just five seniors on the boys and girls combined, so our future looks bright.” Injured at the start of this season, Branch was dominant Saturday in the 400 meters, breaking her own school record with a 56.98 time. She was five seconds ahead of the rest of the pack in that race and went for 18 feet, 9.75 inches to win the long jump over Ramstein sophomore CiCi Williams. Jaya Worthington Another big day

BASEBALL Kaiserslautern boys perfect in Italy Kaiserslautern (13-3) made the most of its trip to Italy with wins in all four of its games. Saturday action saw KHS nip Naples 3-0 then pound Vicenza 15-0. On Friday, the Raiders beat Vicenza and Naples 19-3 and 12-1, respectively. The first Saturday win was a pitcher’s duel, with Kaiserslautern senior Nolan Sherman striking out nine Naples players. Sherman and his younger brother Ronin each hit doubles and later, Kaiserslautern scored 13 runs in the first inning to dominate Vicenza. Kaden Senkbeil shut out the VHS team and got relief from George Stephen and Justice Harper. Raider batters had eight hits, including doubles from Nolan Sherman and Colin Zayd. The opener on Friday was heavily tilted after Kaiserslautern scored 10 runs in the first inning. Mathias Perrin slapped a bases-loaded double for three RBI. Justice Harper also had a double in the big inning and Kaiserslautern coasted thereafter. Taylor Moore, Justice Harper and Nolan Sherman each registered two hits. One of Sherman’s hits was a three-run triple in the second inning and he also was the winning pitcher. In game two, Ronin Sherman threw a complete game and struck out six, while walking four. Three RBIs from Justice Harper and two each by Nolan Sherman and Senkbeil helped fuel the rout. Nolan Sherman also had two stolen bases.

Ramstein baseball falls twice at Lakenheath Travelling north to face the team they met in last season’s DODEA Division I finals, the Lakenheath Lancers, the Royals lost both games by 8-5 and 10-3 scores, and must regroup and meet rival Kaiserslautern this weekend on the KHS field at Vogelweh. Ramstein trailed 3-2 at one point this weekend, with the bases loaded and nobody out. They were unable to get any runs home, though, and for the weekend only three players – Nemo Kindle, Tieran Shoffner and Jared Junkins — were able to be productive at the plate. Caleb Bellew pitched most of the first game and Shoffner relieved him late. Kindle threw the second contest but Ramstein fell twice. SOCCER Kaiserlsautern boys soccer tops Vilseck On the road this past weekend, the Raiders beat Vilseck 1-0 and they were awarded a win over Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern’s when it was Pablo Zorrilla determined that Wiesbaden had used an ineligible player during a game last week. “Coach (Dominic) Stumpf has really coached our guys up and we got some great play from our seniors and our captains against Vilseck,” said KHS coach Lisa Rimmler. Pablo Zorrilla scored early in the second half to help Kaiserslautern get the win. The goal was set up by charging co-captain Tyler Jankowski who brought the ball down and made a nice setup pass to Zorrilla. On defense, Joseph Mendez and goalkeeper Enrico Ard were other key seniors who showed up big.
Ramstein boys pummel Lakenheath Freshmen played like upperclassmen as Jaden Buelvas and Hunter Smith paced the Royals with a pair of goals each in a 7-0 win over Lakenheath. The Royals will enter the Europeans tournament as the most productive Divison I squad so far, with multiple lopsided wins and a depth-charged roster. Anthony Villella scored with an assist by Buelvas to get things rolling, then Buelvas got his first Ramstein’s Hunter Smith goal and later booted a corner kick that was deposited into the Lakenheath net by Gavin McMillan. It gave Ramstein a 3-0 halftime lead and Gregory McMillan set up Buelvas’ second goal early in the final period. Chris Slover scored on a penalty kick as Ramstein didn’t let up, then Smith made the most of his 15 minutes off the bench with a pair of goals. Smith actually scored on his first touch of the game, having been called up from the junior varsity earlier in the week. Ryzun Hazen, Daniel Shin were credited with assists as Ramstein ended the regular season undefeated. Ramstein girls romp past Lakenheath Christine Merrill scored on a 35-yard free kick and Leisel Mendenhall recorded her first varsity score as Ramstein walloped host Lakenheath 7-0 to complete an undefeated regular season. Mendenhall played an excellent match at center defensive back, controlling the ball and exhibiting great passing. Scoring was halted by the mercy rule but prior to that, Ramstein got three tallies from Gabs Janes and two from Rocio Fernandez, plus singles from Allie Davis and Jaelynn Galindo.
Kaiserslautern dominates on Italian trip Kaiserslautern (10-3) beat Vicenza 24-3 and beat Naples 21-3, then posted 10-3 and 17-6 victories over the same teams on Saturday. Victoria Jackson’s 16-for-18 batting during the weekend helped set the Lady Raiders up with big momentum heading into this weekend’s doubleheader with rival Ramstein. In Friday’s play, Chloe Whisennand was 8-for-10 at the plate with five runs batted in and a home run. Ally Alamos was 8-for-9 with a double and six RBI, along with pitching the first game of the doubleheader. Mariana Conklin was also 8-for-9 with two doubles, a triple and a home run. Victoria Jackson added a grand slam Victoria Jackson homer against Naples. Alamos struck out five Vicenza batters and Phoenix Whisennand was on the mound in the rout of Naples. Olivia Warren had four hits including a triple. Kaiserslautern used the same two throwers on Saturday and posted big wins. Whisennand had seven strikeouts and Alamos had three. Victoria Jackson was 4-for-8 with a double and Conklin was 5-for-8 with a homer and five RBI. Phoenix Whisennand had a 3-for-4 game against Naples but Alamos was the top KHS batter, going 7-for-8 with four RBI and a triple. Ramstein softball still leads standings despite first loss On a road trip to Lakenheath, Ramstein won its first game but was beaten for the first time all year in game two. The Lady Lancers won 11-7, scoring five runs in the final two innings and using 10 stolen bases to conquer an RHS team that’s still in first place for DODEA Division I. Savannah Sparrow, Azure Agricula, and Abby Walker generated nine total hits for Ramstein in the loss, with Agricula pounding a home run and a double. Walker also had a double but Lakenheath batters had two doubles and two homers of their own, plus 10 stolen bases. Sparrow started at pitcher and Walker threw, too. The first game saw Azure Agricula go 4-for-4 batting including a triple and the Lady Royals got doubles by Walker and Mikaela McBroom. Walker went seven innings on the mound and struck out eight, with no walks. McBroom had two runs batted in.

Germans observe Pentecostal traditions Sunday, Monday Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. Sunday and Monday, Germans observe “Pfingsten,” or Pentecost. It’s a religious fest, and Monday is considered an official holiday in Germany. Stores, banks and official insti-
tutions will be closed. Pentecost comes from the Greek word “pentekoste,” which means 50th. Christians celebrate Pentecost, also called Whitsun, the 50th day after Easter because they believe that’s when God sent down His Holy Spirit. After receiving the Holy Spirit, the Apostles started spreading the new Gospel into the world. Therefore, the fest also represents a celebration for

Forget air conditioners – use your rolladens wisely
by The Find-It Guide In America, we are used to everything being air-conditioned. Heck, in some states, the only time you don’t have air conditioning is when you run from your car to your house. The southern states know it all too well. In Germany, rarely do you come across air conditioning. And if you do get some relief from the summer heat, it likely is not at your house. Well have no fear. German houses have a built in cooling system that doesn’t cost you any money and it is 100% environmentally friendly! One building feature that has not caught on in the states is the rolladens you find over every window in your house. These rolldown, black-out shades turn your rooms pitch black, which can make for a comfortable sleeping environment (but difficult to wake up to). Whether you have the manual or electric version, you have surely come to love these handy inventions by now.
