75th Anniversary of D-Day:

A time of celebration, remembrance

by Maria Forte 86th Airlift Wing Historian Starting June 6, a weeklong series of parades, re-enactments, speakers and memorial services throughout Europe will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the day Allied forces landed on beaches in Normandy, France, and began liberating German-occupied France from Nazi control. The event is likely to attract more than 30,000 veterans and their families to remember the sacrifices made June 6, 1944. The 75th Anniversary is both celebratory and reverent as remembering our fallen is a critical cultural experience. The event allows younger generations to tie into the past by talking with veterans who experienced this moment in history and walk the beaches where their grandfathers once stood. Event participants get to experience the sounds, smells and visuals through memorials, museums and places where the end of WWII began. See DDAY, Page 2

Page 2 DDAY from Page 1 Planning for the invasion of north-west Europe began in January of 1943 and was called Operation Overloard. The actual D-Day landings were code-named Operation Neptune. The five landing zones for D-Day were Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and Omaha beaches. Planning and coordination of the mission took time and required all of the Allied partners. The British second army was responsible for Gold, Juno and Sword beaches and the U.S. First Army was responsible for operations on Utah and Omaha beaches. For U.S. Forces it was essential to secure critical landing areas to move supplies and troops forward. A great deal of intelligence gathering, aerial photography, cartography and other skills went into identifying an area where coastal geography allowed for landing tens of thousands of men, hundreds of vehicles and acres of logistical supplies. As about 36 divisions deployed into France, Allies needed to secure a major port to offload 20,000 tons of supplies and equipment every day. The landing zone needed a good network of roads in order to facilitate pushing logistics forward into battlefields. The landing beaches needed to be weak points in the enemy defense and within combat radius of Allied bombers, fighters and ground-attack aircraft flying from the U.K. The first wave of troops included U.S. engineers who cleared mined posts, barbed wire, hedgehogs and log ramps. Omaha beach was the most heavily defended and carried the highest casualty rate that day. About 156,000 Allied soldiers landed in Normandy, and there would be nearly 10,000 casualties. Artists created phony airfields, blow up tanks and gliders as false units to deceive the enemy so they would not expect the landing at Normandy. “Task Force Mason” was sent ahead of troops with a mission near the village of Trévierés. At dawn, a French farmer

came to check his cows and saw the cows were pushing an American tank around his property. The unit detained the farmer so they would not be discovered. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was appointed the Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in December 1943. He inspired the troops, publishing the General Order that prepared them for the fight. He famously wrote, “The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.” All of the services were important that day, but the importance of air power cannot be stressed enough. Allied air forces completed months of missions targeting the industrial complex and slowing down the movement of troops and supplies to the enemy. Air power was a critical component in establishing land and sea operations in the area. On D-Day, Allied air forces controlled the skies, dropping troops, supplies and equipment, and grasping quick control of critical areas to aid the flow of resources. Eisenhower named the Douglas C-47 Skytrain along with the jeep, the bazooka and the atomic bomb as the four weapons that won the war. Approximately 925 C-47s were used to tow Waco CG-4 gliders. More than 4,000 airborne forces went over on D-Day and D+1 ( June 7, 1944) in 500 gliders. The pilots who flew them had crossings and landings every bit as hazardous as those hitting the beaches behind them. Troops were due to land before dawn. This type of landing had never been attempted before in darkness. The U.S. Army’s 82d and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped west of Utah beach. The 82d Airborne Division occupied

the town of Sainte-Mère-Eglise by 4:30 a.m. making it the first town liberated in the invasion. Many gliders wrecked on the small Normandy fields, but losses were not excessive and the mission was a success. The 37th Troop Carrier Squadron flew C-47 aircraft on D-Day. The unit is now the 37th Airlift Squadron stationed at Ramstein Air Base. The 37th AS flew airborne assaults on Normandy. During World War II they were awarded Service Streamers for World War II American Theater. They were awarded Campaign Streamers of EgyptLibya; Tunisia; Naples-Foggia; RomeArno; Normandy; Northern France; Rhineland and Central Europe. They received Distinguished Unit Citations for: Middle East, Nov. 25, 1942 to Aug. 25, 1943 and France June 6 to 7, 1944. The 37th TCS “Bluetail Flies” were very active during World War II and they provided necessary support for assigned operations. As a tribute to D-Day, a few of the 37th AS C-130J Hercules aircraft are currently painted with black and white invasion stripes. Invasion stripes were first authorized on April 18, 1944 and helped the Allied forces identify one another from enemy forces. The troop carrier squadrons also had codes so that they could be identified by Allied forces. The 37th TCS was designated with the combination W7 as their code. The Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces report that was published between June 6, 1944, through May 8, 1945, credited Allied air power as a significant force saying, “In the vent, German air might was thoroughly dominated by D-Day and we were free to apply the immense strength of the Allied air forces in the manner we wished and to launch the invasion confident that our plans could not be seriously upset by the German air force. In addition, air bombardment had disrupted the German communications system, immeasurably aiding our ground forces by impeding enemy movements.”

After the invasion, the U.S. First Army established a temporary American Cemetery, St. Laurent Cemetery, on June 8, 1944. On July 18, 1956, the site in Colleville-surMer, France, was dedicated as the Normandy American Cemetery. This cemetery contains the graves of 9,380 military members who died serving their country during D-Day landings and further operations. There are also 1,600 names of the missing on the walls. It is one of 26 permanent American burial grounds and 30 memorial sites, monuments and markers on foreign soil. Force officials have selected 4,733 technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant out of 19,422 eligible for a selection rate of 24.34 percent in the 19E7 promotion cycle. The promotion rate for the 19E7 Master Sergeant cycle is lower than the 29.60 percent rate in the 2018 cycle. The 2018 promotion rate, combined with a high master sergeant retention rate for the last four years, led to a decrease in the available manning requirements this year according to Chief Master Sgt. Tiffany Smith, Enlisted Promotions Policy chief. Smith said the 19E7 promotion rate helps balance those manning needs. “Selection for promotion to become an Air Force senior non-commissioned officer reflects our trust and confidence in those Airmen’s ability to lead and serve in the next higher grade,” she said. “Senior non-commissioned officers represent a group of Airmen who have proven their ability to perform and lead at a high level, and the 19E7 promotion rate validates that.” Of those eligible holding a Promote Now recommendation, 90.2 per-

cent were selected, 74.60 percent of those holding a Must Promote recommendation were selected and 12.80 percent of Airmen holding a Promote recommendation were selected. Selectees’ average time in grade was 3.49 years and time in service was 13.56 years. The average selectee overall score was 537.03, based on point averages of 10.80 for decorations, 72.00 for the promotion fitness examination and 69.87 for the specialty knowledge test. The master sergeant promotion list is available on the Enlisted Promotions page of the Air Force’s Personnel Center website, the Air Force Portal and myPers. Airmen can access their score notices on the virtual Military Personnel Flight via the AFPC secure applications page. Those selected will be promoted beginning Aug. 1, according to their promotion sequence number. Prior to posting the list, AFPC provided commanders, senior raters and trusted agents with advanced knowledge of their Airmen’s selection with the intention that selects be notified no earlier than one day before the public release. For more information about Air Force personnel programs, visit the AFPC public website.

by Airman 1st Class Jennifer Gonzales 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Leaders from the Air Force Personnel Center spoke to military members and civilian employees assigned to the Kaiserslautern Military Community during a town hall on Ramstein Air Base, May 13. The AFPC briefers discussed changes on both the civilian and military side which affect how jobs are filled, how long it takes for a civilian to get hired, and the speed at which orders are received. The town hall was part of a larger initiative to be more clear and transparent with wing personnel, and to give them the opportunity to communicate directly with AFPC leadership and subject matter experts. One tool currently being utilized for the military members’ hiring process is Talent Marketplace, an assignment system that is making it easier for officers to apply for open positions. “It increases the visibility of potential jobs to offi cers — what’s actually going to be filled — while increasing the visibility of those officers’ preferences to potential gaining commanders,” said Capt. Bill Werner, AFPC Assignment Program Development chief. “It incorporates the potential gaining commander’s input

into the equation for the first time.” Werner says they will learn from the input of its users and implement changes if they make sense. For now, Talent Marketplace is geared towards officers, however they are scheduled to integrate enlisted assignments in 2021. Hiring on the civilian side is also being improved. On average, it has taken approximately 175 days to hire a civilian, but during the last 18 months, AFPC leadership has worked to reduce the number to about 140 days, with their goal being 80 days. For the expedited hiring process, they hope to get the number down to about 50 days. “If it takes us too long to bring somebody on board, these talented men and women are going to find jobs elsewhere,” said Maj. Gen. Andrew Toth, AFPC commander. “We really need their expertise in the U.S. Air Force.” AFPC leadership also explained how the use of standard core personnel documents, working with career field teams, and communication between supervisors and employees can help reduce the amount of time a position is vacant. For more information on these policy changes visit the AFPC website: https://www.afpc.af.mil/

Phillip Easton, the USAFE – AFAFRICA command chief. “Our goal is to make sure they understand how they fit into the mission: in their squadron, in their group, in their wing, in their MAJCOM and in their combatant commands,” added Easton. There were 26 different topics discussed including the importance of honest feedback, setting priorities for individuals and teams, emotional intelligence, resiliency and formal etiquette to help attendees strengthen their leadership skills. Easton continued on the importance of the conference and how these skills are vital to developing the NCO corps. “We ask a lot out of our junior enlisted. We ask them to be technical experts, improve themselves, be involved in the community and take care of their Airmen. We have to make sure they have all the tools they need to be successful.” While primarily U.S. Air Force Airmen were in attendance, there were several U.S. Army and NATO service members selected, giving the class a one-of-a-kind joint and international perspective. “I work with over 29 nations from all different branches of the military… all the services and countries have different cultures, career fields, and standards. When we come together, we get a better understanding of those things and become better at operating in a coalition and teams to face today’s

Kaiserslautern American challenges,” said Warrant Officer Jake Alpert, command senior enlisted leader NATO Allied Air Command. The class also had senior noncommissioned officers in attendance to mentor, guide and facilitate. Their primary role was to help attendees digest the information and ensure understanding of the tactical, operational and strategic concepts being communicated. “Over the last week, it was mutually beneficial to be able to learn and share our respected missions, leadership successes and failures in order to grow and be better, together,” said the class’ mentor, Senior Master Sgt. Kodi Bailey, USAFE-AFAFRICA A3 superintendent for operations and plans division. In addition to briefings and panel discussions, attendees had an opportunity to tour the 435th Combat Readiness Group, the deployment transition center and the 603rd Air Operations Center to better understand various, unique components of the USAFE-AFAFRICA mission. “This conference was great. The topics were interesting, the briefers were enthusiastic, and I was able to network with many Americans from different services,” reflected Senior Sergeant Hanne Skjaeveland, a Norwegian air force mission planner from the Command and Control Squadron, from the Heavy Airlift Wing, Papa, Hungary. The week concluded with a physical training obstacle course designed to challenge teams on communication, physical abilities and cooperation. Easton delivered closing remarks, bringing the conference to a close, “Mentoring, molding and developing our force is critical to our success. Serving alongside NCOs like you gives me faith in our military’s future and our ability to remain the world’s greatest Air Force.”

USAG RP recognizes civilian professionals with new awards program by Mary Ann Davis USAG Rheinland Pfalz Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz recently began a new awards program to recognize Army civilian professionals and their contributions to the garrison mission. The USAG RP Army Professional of the Quarter / Year Program highlights and rewards organizational work and behaviors that support and further the mission, goals, values and initiatives of the garrison. Civilian employees displaying efficiency, innovation and economy of government operations are nominated to recognize their superior work and special acts or services to the garrison. Award categories for USAG RP Army Professional of the Quarter / Year are: Category I: GS-01 through GS-11 (and equivalent Appropriated Funds, Host National and Non-Appropriated Funds) Category II: GS-12 through GS-14 (and equivalent APF, HN and NAF)

Second Quarter and first recipient of the new award, Burgess said, “I feel honored to be one of the first recipients of the USAG RP Army Professional of the Quarter Award. It’s a great feeling to have my efforts recognized.” This quarter was the culmination of a year-long endeavor creating a new website for the garrison, she said. “This project was the bulk of my efforts in 2018, and in the first quarter of 2019 I put the finished product forward for the Army’s Keith L. Ware Communications Awards. USAG RP took first place at Installation Management Command level, went on to compete at Department of Army level, and won first place there as well,” she said. Creating the new garrison website was a test of resilience for Burgess, who completed 80 percent of the website when an unexpected server error deleted the majority of her work, causing her to start all over. “It was hard seeing more than 200 hours of work erased overnight, but I had to stay focused on the task and redo the work instead of letting it completely bring me down,” she remarked. “In the end, it was worth it. The final product brought me a great sense of accomplishment and helped me achieve these honors from DA and USAG RP.” As tough as it was to create, Burgess found the work rewarding. “I enjoy that my job is a constant learning experience. I was brand new to the Public Affairs field when I started this job, and I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much from my coworkers. I appreciate that they challenge me and trust me with things I’ve

The greatest challenge being time management, he said. “It takes a lot of work and crosscoordination to ensure our team’s readiness to respond and support of our Soldiers and Army families, as well as our civilians,” the chief said. “There’s one thing that I’ve learned since Day 1 in the garrison — there is never nothing to do. This quarter was no different — time needed to be invested in planning and those plans had to be accompanied by action. The balance between the two are of the utmost importance to our mission.” Fiedler’s duties were tough but gratifying, he said, because, “It is a pleasure to get out to the fire stations, visit with the firefighters and each station’s leadership. That time is invaluable.” Lastly, the chief thanked DES leadership and all the fire officers and firefighters for making his tour here more rewarding, but most importantly, “I’m so grateful every day for my wife, Cheryl. Without her support and endless patience, I would be incomplete,” he said. Army civilians are a cadre of civil servants dedicated to a professional code of service and support to our Soldiers and families, USAG RP Deputy Commander Dr. Kevin L. Griess. “They ensure the safety and security of our Army community, ensure the combat readiness of our forces and work diligently to improve the wellbeing of our community every day,” the deputy commander concluded. “It is our honor to recognize these professionals through programs such as this. The difficulty lies in selecting the few each quarter out of the many outstanding civilian employees working in our garrison.”

Air Force to pay up to 500 dollars for spouse occupational license transfer during PCS

by Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs The Air Force announced the spouse relicensure reimbursement program, May 15, which would provide financial relief up to $500 to Airmen whose spouses must obtain state occupational relicensures or recertifications during a permanent change of station or assignment across state lines. The Air Force will reimburse qualifying relicensure and recertification fees incurred during PCS/ PCAs authenticated on or after Dec. 12, 2017. “Part of taking care of Airmen and families means making it easier for spouses to continue their careers after

a military move,” said Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson. “This policy reduces financial burdens and makes the professional careers of our Air Force spouses more portable.” The 2018 National Defense Authorization Act authorized the military services to reimburse service members for occupational state relicensing and recertification costs their spouses incur due to a PCS/ PCA. While some states authorize reciprocity for certain types of occupational licenses, not all states do, resulting in the spouse needing to update a license or certification according to the new state’s requirements. “The strength of the nation’s Air

Force is not the platforms we operate or the technologies we employ; it is our Airmen and their families. Family readiness is Airman readiness,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. The new policy will allow for reimbursement of relicensing fees including exams, certifications and registration, and will cover occupations such as teaching, cosmetology, real estate and nursing. Qualifying relicensing costs must be incurred and paid after and within 24 months of the date the member’s PCS/PCA orders are authenticated. “We can’t do enough to support Air Force families. This is a positive step in the right direction to support

our spouses as they pursue their own careers,” said Shon Manasco, assistant secretary of the Air Force for manpower and reserve affairs. Airmen and spouses can find more information about this program at www.afpc.af.mil/Benefitsand-Entitlements/EmploymentResources/. General information about career and education programs for spouses is available from an installation’s airman & family readiness center, the Department of Labor website at https://www.veterans.gov/milspouses, and the Department of Defense Spouse Education and Career Opportunities Program at https:// myseco.militaryonesource.mil.

86 AW hosts Flight Leadership Course on Ramstein by Senior Airman Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Airlift Wing hosted the first local Flight Leadership Course to guide current and future leaders on overcoming difficult situations, improving management skills and becoming a better leader on Ramstein Air Base, from April 23 to 25. The flight leadership course was open to officers and enlisted, some hailing from Ramstein’s geographically separated units stationed throughout Europe. U.S. Air Force Col. Joseph Wenckus, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, spoke about the flight leadership course, its students, and the benefit the course provides the students. “These are our future leaders,” said Wenckus. “These are the folks starting at flight leadership but have the potential to move up to squadron leadership, group leadership, or even wing leadership. So, professionally developing them into this role and exposing them to a whole host of not only issues but agencies that can support them in their job, gives them tools to put in their toolkit and ultimately make them more prepared for their next step in leadership.” One such future leader is U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Jeffrey Halili, 86th Security Forces Squadron Raven team member. Halili recently received news he was accepted into the U.S. Air Force Officer Training School and upon graduation will don the rank of second lieutenant. In light of this news, Halili sought mentorship, knowledge and wisdom to propel his new career as an officer forward. “The flight leadership course was eye-opening,” said Halili. “I’m very thankful to my squadron commander and my chief for giving me this opportunity to just see the other side. I’ve been on the junior enlisted side and I see how things happen. To now flip the coin and see why things happen is immensely valuable.” Attendees sat together throughout the course in a sort of classroom environment without breaking into small group discussions. This structure, along with officers and enlisted both being in attendance, allowed for more interesting conversations and debates that otherwise may not have occurred, said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th Airlift Wing command chief. “I’m thankful to the team that organized this event because they

insisted on keeping the group together throughout the entirety of the event,” said Rendon. “Either as a flight chief, a civilian, or otherwise, you may not know what questions need to be asked. I saw value in keeping the group together by hearing how people view things differently. There were strong opinions voiced and challenging discussions presented. I think this might not have happened in small group discussion.” One organizer of the flight leadership course, U.S. Air Force 1st

Lt. Jennifer Cutler, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron section commander, would strongly recommend this course to anyone looking to improve their leadership skills. “I would recommend this course to anyone. We had technical sergeants filling master sergeant and even senior master sergeant billets. You can’t tell how much of a leadership capacity someone is in just by looking at their rank. That’s why I really recommend this course for the senior NCOs. Company grade officers don’t know

what they don’t know and often rely on the senior NCOs for guidance. With this course we wanted to provide a broad range of leadership topics so senior NCOs realize how they may better mentor the CGOs. In closing, Wenckus looked forward to seeing the results of this course materialize. “There’s a lot of theory involved with this course and I’m interested to see how they use this information once they get into the practice of being a flight leader.”

Protect yourself and family members against ticks and mosquitoes by using insect repellent and wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants when walking in the woods this summer. Courtesy photo

by Juergen Schwarz USAG Rheinland Pfalz Public Affairs When the weather becomes warmer and summer approaches, it’s not uncommon for individuals to spend more time outdoors or walking in wooded areas. That’s why it’s truly important for people to begin protecting themselves against ticks and mosquitoes. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ticks are known to carry Lyme disease, which is characterized by fever, headache, fatigue and skin rashes. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart and the nervous system. Mosquitoes can carry diseases such as West Nile virus and other known diseases. To protect against these insects, the CDC advises people to choose products containing DEET, Picaridin, IR 3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus. If applying an insect repellent on children, use products that contain 30 percent or less of the listed ingredients. Use insect repellent before going outdoors and be sure to bring some along in case more needs to be reapplied. Wear long-sleeve garments, long pants

and closed-toe shoes if walking in the woods to avoid tick and mosquito contact. Although ticks live in the woods, they are also commonly found in your own backyard. Take steps to keep backyards safe by keeping play areas and playground equipment away from bushes, shrubs and other outdoor vegetation. Grass can also be treated with tick-control spays. Don’t bring ticks indoors! Be sure to check yourself and others (to include pets) for ticks before coming indoors. Check under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, behind the knees, between the legs, around the waist and scalp. If you locate a tick, use tweezers to carefully remove it. Watch for fever and a rash at the site of the tick bite, and seek medical care if these develop. Launder apparel and place it in the dryer to kill ticks attached to clothing. By following these tips, you can keep you and your loved ones tick and mosquito free. For more information, call U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Safety Office at DSN 541-2302 or civilian at 0611143-541-2302 or visit the CDC website at https://www.cdc.go

KMC District Soccer U15 Girls make history taking German championship Story and photo by Dustin Hart contributing writer For the first time in league history, an all-American team from Kaiserslautern Military Community District Soccer won its division in the competitive Deutscher FussballBund (German Football Association). The KMC under-15 girls’ team completed their 2018-2019 season with an 11-1 record, recording 33 points in the DFB’s C-Juniorinnen Landesliga West pfalz. The second place team, 1.FFC Kaiserslautern, finished the season with 24 points. Making the achievement more aston-

ishing is the fact the U15 team won the championship in only its second year playing in the DFB. “It has truly been amazing to watch this group of girls come together as a unified team in a concise amount of time and play at an incredibly high level,” said Head Coach Marcel Braun. “They have worked extremely hard throughout the year, and their commitment to each other and a tireless work ethic resulted in tremendous results on the field.” After dominating the competition for much of the season, the team claimed the league championship with a dramatic 2-1 victory over sec-

ond place 1.FFC Kaiserslautern on May 8, and 3-0 win over FV Münchweiler e.V. on May 12. “It’s an honor to play competitive soccer in Europe,” said Isabella Hernandez, who served as the team’s captain. “The KMC club was very welcoming when I first started, and I was very happy to join the club. Getting the experience of playing for a German coaching staff is something I would have never had in the U.S., and I have definitely grown as a player. We put in a lot of hard work that paid off this year and resulted in my team winning the championship for U.S. Youth

Soccer and KMC,” she added. Additional team members included Julia Marlin, Madyson Bazua, Madalynn Hopkins, Natasha Smith, Maggie Royle, Lucy Delaney, Jenna Roers, Gabriella Clark, Caroline Donmoyer and Stephanie Rojas. KMC is the largest district in Southern Germany affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer Europe program. All teams, including adults, play in the DFB. Naples edges Ramstein men 1-0 to win European 1A soccer title by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Sometimes the whole season comes down to one moment they wish they could have back. Ramstein’s men’s soccer team gave up a lone goal in the first few seconds of the second half and Naples made it hold up for a 1-0 victory and the 1A European soccer title for 2019. Naples did not have many opportunities to score because of a strong defense led by All European tournament selection Gabriel Delaney and solid goaltender Garrett Erickson. But good teams find their opportunities and Naples capitalized on one of the few, tapped it into the Ramstein net and tenaciously held on to bring home the trophy. Naples finished the season undefeated. The Royals came into the tournament at 6-1 and finished at 11-2. Ramstein’s outstanding sophomore

scorer Jaden Buelvas put pressure on the Naples goal at the seven minute mark when he snuck behind the defenders and got a good look. But the Naples goalie turned it aside to thwart the first real test. The only other threats were also off of Buelvas’ right foot as the Naples defenders kept the ball out of the middle and rarely allowed the Royals to get in behind them. For Buelvas, one of the top players in the European league, it marked the last time he will wear a Royals uniform. Today is his last day in Germany because of a PCS. He will be continuing his education in the Chicago area. Ramstein opened the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Vicenza at the Reichenbach Field. They followed that up later that day with a 3-2 victory over Wiesbaden, avenging their only season loss. Wiesbaden entered the tournament with its only loss to Naples. The Royals then beat

Kaiserslautern 4-0 and Lakenheath 2-0 the following day and beat Shape 1-0 on the third day to advance. Naples defeated Vilseck 6-1 and Stuttgart 2-0 the first day. It tied SHAPE 2-2 the second day and then put away Wiesbaden on the third day 2-1 for the right to play Ramstein. Wiesbaden beat SHAPE 5-0 in the third place game. Kaiserslautern lost to Wiesbaden 4-1, Vicenza 1-0, to Naples 3-0 and to

Ramstein. Buelvas and Raiders dynamo Giannes Dones were also named to the all tournament team. The tournament was a good finale to a stellar season for the league. Naples was unbeaten, but Ramstein, Wiesbaden and SHAPE each had just one defeat. Wiesbaden beat Ramstein 2-1 during the year and Naples beat Wiesbaden 3-1. Ramstein smoked SHAPE 5-0. So the tournament was definitely up for grabs. In 2A, unbeaten American Overseas School of Rome defeated Aviano 4-0. AFNorth defeated Florence 1-0 for third place. In the 3A tournament, Ansbach edged Sigonella 2-1. Spangdahlem beat Brussels 3-2 for third place. Baumholder’s boys lost to Alconbury 3-2, to Spangdahlem 2-0, to Brussels on penalty kicks after a 0-0 regular time finish, and to SPA 6-4. On the girl’s side, Wiesbaden and

May 31, 2019 Naples cloned their 2-0 Wiesbaden victory during the season to win the 1A title. The Warriors went through the season undefeated, with two ties, by outscoring their opponents 50-4. Earlier in pool play, the teams tied 3-3 in a driving rainstorm on the grass at Reichenbach. A goal by sophomore Jade Anderson at the seven minute mark

from the right wing put Wiesbaden up 1-0. Teammate and Class 1A MVP Erin Goodman scored in the second period, her 35th goal of the season. Wiesbaden goalkeeper Karli Wallace finished her high school sports career by making several key saves to preserve the shutout. Wallace’s stop at the 35-minute mark on a rocket off of the foot of Roxanne Sasse iced

Page 17

the game for the Warriors. Wallace will continue her academic career at the United States Air Force Academy where she will try out for the soccer team. She was also a top wrestler this past winter. Stuttgart defeated Kaiserslautern 2-0 to take third place. Ramstein’s Haley Deome, who has also been accepted at the Air Force Academy,

and Kaiserslautern’s Chloe Martin and Paola Zorilla were named to the all tournament team. In Class 2A, MVP Bianca Liberti scored twice as Black Forest Academy shut down Marymount International 5-0. Aviano beat Rota 2-1 for third. In the 3A final, it was Spangdahlem 4, Aviano 2. Brussels beat Sigonella 2-1 for third.

Wiesbaden defeats Ramstein 9-5 to win Division 1 softball title by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Wiesbaden senior pitcher Allison Urick struck out nine and contributed two huge hits as Wiesbaden defeated Ramstein 9-5 to win the Division 1A softball title at the Landstuhl softball complex. Looking at the standings after the regular season, the top six teams had winning records, with Vilseck, Ramstein, Vicenza and Stuttgart on top and Kaiserslautern in the pack with eight league wins. But then came the bottom three – Lakenheath at 2-6, Wiesbaden at 2-10 and SHAPE without wins. The conversations focused around who would win it all, which one of those top teams would have enough. No one outside of the Wiesbaden community mentioned the Warriors in that conversation. How wrong they were. Ramstein advanced to the finals. With the best catcher in the league, solid pitching and enough hitting, there was no surprise. But where did Wiesbaden come from? Two league

wins and they are in the finals of the European tournament? How could that be? With Ramstein freshman pitcher Lauryn Szczygiel on the slab, Wiesbaden’s Isabel Davis led off with a double to left center just out of the reach of shortstop Paige Nielsen. But Szczygiel fanned the next two hitters and got Urick to ground out shortstop to first. In the Royals half of the inning, Abby Hollenbeck walked and scored on Mykal Taylor’s hard hit double to right. Urick then plunked Nielsen on the back, but righted the ship and whiffed Anna Maria Staukenbury on three pitches to end the inning. The Warriors broke it open in the second with six runs on five hits. Nicole Henriquez started the inning by legging out an inside the park home run when Staukenbury barely missed the liner and the ball rolled to the fence. Following an infield error, Warriors center fielder Serenity Woodland stroked a ball in the left field gap and came all the way around

Ramstein Royals European Division 1A runners up in softball.

for a 3-1 Wiesbaden lead. Szczygiel got the next two outs on a grounder and strike out, but Davis singled again, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Cassie Laliberte. Szczygiel hit the next hitter. Urick crushed a fastball in the gap to left knocking in two more and the Warriors were up five. In the Ramstein second, Syd Smith’s bunt back to the pitcher brought home a run. Madison Jarvis hit a squibber in the infield for a hit, knocking in the third run. After a scoreless Wiesbaden third, the Royals struck again when Staukenbury knocked home Nielsen, who was hit by a pitch a second time, and it was 6-4 Wiesbaden. The Warriors added two more in the top of the fourth on a two run single by Urick. Ramstein scored again in the fourth, but Wiesbaden iced it with a run in the fifth for the 9-5 final. For Wiesbaden, it was an amazing ending to an unusual year. Both Ramstein and Stuttgart were very

strong and Kaiserslautern was beating teams as well. Plus, Wiesbaden was swept by Vilseck in the regular season finale, not exactly creating the type of momentum wanted for a tournament. Even in the first few games of the tournament, Wiesbaden was not overwhelming anyone, including a loss to Stuttgart in the second game. But they defeated Vicenza, which was flying through the opponents in the tournament, with Urick, the tournament’s most valuable player, striking out 11 in seven innings. Ramstein made it to the finals following a stunning 10-9 defeat of Kaiserslautern despite being down 6-0. But two five-run innings gave them the lead and they held on despite a three-run last ditch effort by the Raiders to seal the victory. Mykal Taylor, Ramstein’s junior catcher, looked at the season as a success even though they did not win the last game. “I am very happy at what we did,” she said. “I am kind of sad that we didn’t take it all. But at the same time, we grew as a team, so it was kind of a win. It wasn’t what we wanted, but we have to move on.” Four different teams have won the softball title the last four years, so it is anyone’s guess who will be the favorites next year. But if Taylor has any say in the matter, it is a guarantee that Ramstein will be among the favorites. “We have to come on with a vengeance next year,” she said. “We will start early. We are going to develop our pitchers. They will be a little older and we are going to come back a little bit stronger.” Taylor came to Ramstein this year, but she already knows the challenges that face the teams here. “We don’t know what we will have next year. We have people moving and a lot of seniors graduating. But we will come back with something.” Taylor and teammate Szczygiel both made the all tournament team. In the Division III/II finals, Sigonella won for the third straight year, defeating Rota 11-1.

Kaiserslautern, Baumholder men win Euro track and field; Ramstein’s Rogers sets record in 3200 meters by Robert Baldwin contributing writer

Kaiserslautern’s overall depth proved to be too much for the rest of the 19 team field as the Raiders men won the Division 1A 2019 European Track and Field Championships on their home track. The Raiders’ 139 points edged out Ramstein at 124 and Wiesbaden at 119. Baumholder was the champion in 3A for the third straight year. All of the schools competed together and the Buccaneers finished eighth overall. In the women’s competition, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden finished in a tie with 148 points. Ramstein was third with 136.5 and Kaiserslautern fifth with 46 points. Baumholder had ten points. In 3A, the athletes are often as good as those in the larger schools, but there are just not as many of them. Whereas Ramstein or Kaiserslautern had 50 or 60 men’s competitors, Baumholder had ten, but they did not back down from the power schools. Sophomore Chandler Pigge was fifth in the 400 meter run. He paired up with Lorne Huxtable, Laurence Huxtable, and Brandon Bankston Jr. to place sixth in the 4x400 relay. In the 1,600 Sprint

Medley Relay, Jesse Espinoza stepped in for Lorne Huxtable and the Buccaneers placed third behind Ramstein and Kaiserslautern. Lorne Huxtable was fifth in the competitive triple jump field and Jeremiah Christopher earned two more points in the discus. The six that finished ahead of him were all 1A throwers. Three European records were set. Ramstein’s outstanding senior distance runner Dashiell Rogers ran a 9:49.21 in the 3,200 meter run, breaking the old record of 9:51.34 set last year by Jose Serrano. Kaiserslautern’s Joseph Purvis was third while Rogers’ teammate Denver Dalpais finished seventh and the Raiders Orlando Rojas earned a point in eighth place. Dalpais won the 800 meters and anchored the winning sprint medley relay team. Sophomore Griffin Purcell of Kaiserslautern was third. Sophomore McKinley Fielding of Stuttgart, who was the runner up in her weight class in the European wrestling tournament this winter, annihilated the record in the women’s 3,200 meter run. Fielding’s 11:07.78 broke the old mark, which had stood for seven years, by 20 seconds. Ramstein’s Jordanne Hill and Kristin Lucero fin-

ished third and fourth and ran strong races but were still more than a minute behind Fielding. Then, as an encore, Fielding set the record in the 1,600 meters, winning that race by 27 seconds. She was also the anchor in the Stuttgart team winning the 4x800 relay. Overall, she was responsible for 60 of Stuttgart’s 148 points. While everyone else seems to be exerting maximum effort, Fielding looks like she is on a Sunday stroll when she blazes around the track. Marquez Middlebrooks of Wiesbaden also won three times, taking the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump. His Warriors teammate, sprinter Whitney Bivens won the women’s 200 and 400, anchored the Warriors victorious 4x400 relay and was second in the 100 to teammate Isabella Pizarro. Bivens and Pizarro barely edged out Kaiserslautern’s rocket Mallory Harris in the 100, who also took third in the 200 behind Bivens and her teammate Ashanti Scott. Ramstein teammates Aryal Allen and Casey McCollum finished fifth and sixth. Kaiserslautern’s Sierra Goode was fifth in the 400 meters. One of the most closely contested events this spring has been the men’s 100 meters.

Ramstein’s Dashiell Rogers (#1) set a new European record in the men’s 3,200 run. Photo by Maddie Rayburn

Middlebrooks won this time, but had to outrun outstanding Ramstein sprinters Jason Jones and Dominique Arizpe, who came in fourth and fifth. In the 200, Arizpe was fourth, Cedric Ellis from Kaiserslautern was fifth and the Raiders’ Tre Dotson was eighth. In the men’s 400 meters, Ellis and Jaelaun Bell of Ramstein finished second and third and Pigge was fifth. The winner was Joshua Walter of Vilseck. Black Forest Academy’s Mac Roberts surprised by winning the hotly contested 1,600 meter men’s race. He squeeked out the victory by four-tenths of a second over Kaiserslautern’s Joseph Purvis and by about a second over the Raiders Griffin Purcell. Rogers and Dalpais came in fourth and fifth. Kaiserslautern’s Orlando Rojas was seventh and Raiders freshman Edward Collazo was eighth. Wiesbaden’s outstanding hurdler Garrett Armel won twice. Kaiserslautern’s Alapae Turgeon and Jacob Winchell were second and third, Ramstein’s Bryce Thomas was fourth in the 110 meters. Turgeon was sixth in the 300 meter hurdles. The Ramstein quartet of Isaiah Allen, Arizpe, Cameron Chester and Jones won the 4x100 relay. The Kaiserslautern foursome of freshman Larry Haynes, Ellis, Turgeon and Jacob Winchell was second. The Raiders’ Esteban Saldana, Orlando Rojas, Yadiel Rojas and Purcell took the 4x800 title. Ramstein was fourth and Baumholder fifth. Ramstein, Kaiserslautern and Baumholder swept the 1,600 sprint medley relay. Isaiah Allen, Jeremiah Allen, Bell and Dalpais clocked a time of 3:44.56. In a repeat from last year,

Kaiserslautern shot putter senior Austin Higby won at 48 feet 8 inches to finish the season undefeated. He was third in the discus. Tre Dotson and DaVonta Sanders were fourth and seventh for Kaiserslautern in the high Jump. Jones of Ramstein was second in the triple jump, Brian Lunn of Kaiserslautern sixth and Thomas of Ramstein seventh. A pair of Ramstein freshmen, Annika Zimmerer and Alexis Pierre-Louis came in one second apart in sixth and seventh place in the 800. In the 1,600, Ramstein’s Hill was fourth, Lucero seventh and Zimmerer eighth. Zimmerer joined fellow freshman Juliana Wenckus, sophomore Barakat Ibrahim and junior Jillian Harris to place second behind Wiesbaden in the 4x400 relay. Kaiserslautern’s quartet of Skye Morton, Sierra Goiode, Harris and Azora Williams was second. Baumholder was sixth with a team of LaNiya Myers, Alexandra Searrat, Carina Sepulvida and Kya Williams. Myers and Sepulveda are freshmen. Jaya Worthington of Ramstein won the 100-meter hurdles, followed by teammate Samantha Sonka in fourth. Worthington was second in the 300-meter hurdles. Myers was fifth. Worthington was also seventh in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. Ramstein’s Barakat was fourth and Williams seventh in the long jump. Barakat and Williams were fourth and fifth in the triple jump. Caprinia Goode of Ramstein was runner up in the shot put while Kaiserslautern’s Larissa Carter was third and Zhane Williams seventh. Carter and Williams were sixth and seventh in the discus. Sonka, Jarai Jones, Shannon McCray and McCollum won the 4x100 relay for Ramstein. The Royals were also fourth in the sprint medley relay. In the Athletes to Keep an Eye On category, there were two freshman winners. Elizabeth Woodruff won both the shot put and discus while Victoria Harris from AFNorth high jumped 5 feet.

Ramstein scores in last at bat to win Euros baseball title; Nathan Kranz MVP by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Hollywood would do it this way. A group of fresh-faced kids from across the USA and their first-year coach come together to play two last pressure-packed games to remain undefeated and win the continental title. They face the two best pitchers in the league in back-to-back games and have their backs pinned to the wall before miraculously scoring in their last at bat to pull victory from the jaws of certain defeat, nearly causing coronaries among the raucous and emotionally drained fans. It would make a great movie! But it’s not a movie. It is just all in a day’s work for the Ramstein baseball team. In fact, the dramatic finishes are more the norm than the exception. That was the scenario last week as the Ramstein Royals squeaked out victories over Wiesbaden and ace pitcher Austin Deckinga and Stuttgart ace Jack Harris to stay undefeated and win the 1A European Baseball Tournament on their home field. The word around the league is that Ramstein always pulls it out, wins at the end, and gets all the breaks. The statement about the breaks may be sour grapes, but the first part is somewhat true. In the semifinal game, Wiesbaden’s Deckinga had the Royals scuffling with a combination of a hard fastball and a sharp breaking ball. The Royals were down until the last at bat when Ramstein eked it out when Deckinga bounced a curveball past his catcher, allowing the winning run to score to advance to the finals. In the previous tournament games, the Royals had outscored their opponents 44-1. The final game pitted usual rivals Ramstein and Stuttgart at the Southside Fitness Center ball park on the Ramstein base. Fastballer Harris pitched for Stuttgart and freshman Ethan Smith was on the bump for the Royals. Earlier in the year, Harris was as dominant against the Royals hitters as anyone, striking out eight of nine hitters on the opening weekend. This time, he was not as dominant but he still kept the Royals bats in check. In his four innings of work, the Royals had some chances to score, but Stuttgart took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning. Head Coach Ozwaldo Garcia Carillo started Smith for the second straight day. After Peter Boxkemper led off with a single in the third, Garcia Carillo brought in his steady and solid senior do-everything Tieran Schoffner to take over on the mound. Besides a

Ramstein seniors Tieran Shoffner, Jerod Junkins and Nathan Kranz.

fourth inning home run to center by Tyler Savage to make it 3-0, Shoffner pitched brilliantly, keeping his cool and steadying the young Royals defensively. What went through his mind after that shot? “Absolutely nothing. Come back and get the next hitter,” he said. The exact words any coach wants to hear from his senior pitcher in a crucial situation. In the Royals half of the fourth, the Panther defense struggled after making a few errors. Trailing 3-0, Euro Tournament Most Valuable Player Nathan Kranz opened the fourth by flying to the fence in right field. “I just missed it,” Kranz said after the game. “It was this close,” he said, putting his thumb and pointer finger about an inch apart. Makani Stenger singled in the hole between short and third on a play the Stuttgart third baseman had a chance to make. Kaden Romleski followed with another hit towards third that was mishandled, runners at first and second, one out. Smith squirted a squibber down the line at third that was gloved and thrown by the third baseman. But he threw high to first, Smith was safe. On the play Stenger tried to score and was thrown out at the plate, runners at first and second two outs.

Nathan Patel was plunked in the back by a Harris fastball to load the bases for freshman C.J. Delp. He grounded to third but the throw was mishandled by the first baseman. Delp was safe and Romleski scored 3-1, bases loaded, two outs. The first baseman leaped to control the throw and came down on Delp. The game was halted for about ten minutes as they tended to Delp, but he stayed in the game. With Chris Guzaldo in the batter’s box, Harris unleashed his first wild pitch back to the backstop. Run scored, runners at second and third, two outs, 3-2 Stuttgart. “I just overthrew that one,” Harris said about the wild pitch. “I just tried to get too much on it.” Harris got Guzaldo to hit the ball innocuously to second base, a routine grounder. But the player kicked it, Guzaldo was safe, runner scored and it was tied at three, runners at first and third. It was also Harris’ last pitch due to the tournament pitch count rule. In came Wesley Congolese, who threw almost as hard as Harris. All season long, Coach Garcia Carillo has been preaching the benefits of playing aggressive baseball. With a strike on Murphy, he sent Guzaldo to second. The catcher threw down, Guzaldo was safe and Delp scored the

go ahead run from third base in the double steal. Murphy popped up to end the inning, Royals 4, Stuttgart 3 after four innings. In the fifth, Stuttgart added a run to tie it on an E-5, a gap single and a chalk hugging double down the line in right for a run. Shoffner fanned the third out and it was 4-4. In the fifth, Congolese struck out Shoffner looking and Kranz swinging and, following a Stenger single to left, Romleski grounded out to short. Tie score after five. Murphy relieved and shut down Stuttgart in the sixth. In the Ramstein sixth, which was the last inning because of the time limit, Smith led off with a single and immediately stole second base. Patel struck out, Delp hit to the shortstop who threw out Smith trying to advance to third on the grounder. Two outs, Delp on first. Guzaldo stroked a clutch single, runners first and second. The Royals then pulled off another double steal, runners on second and third. Congolese wanted a first pitch strike. Murphy, the freshman, got the fastball belt high over the heart of the plate and he drilled it into left center field bringing in Delp for the 5-4 walk off Royals victory and the cap on an undefeated championship season.

Living Museum, Project Based Learning Story by Gabriele Arsenault Photos by Jennifer McPhail-Hastings Landstuhl Elementary School Fourth graders at Landstuhl Elementary Middle School presented their second Project Based Learning assignment. Students researched women and portrayed them in their Living Museum. Many classes, from kindergarten through 5th grade along

with parents, came to learn about Beatrix Potter, Alice Walker, Ruby Bridges, Katherine Johnson, and Jane Austin — to name just a few. Students were especially excited to learn that some were friends and knew each other. This inspired more research that went beyond expectations. Parents, teachers, and students were impressed with the students and how well they shared their learning.

Otterberg celebrates spring fest

by 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Otterberg will sponsor its traditional spring fest Saturday through Monday. Since the middle of the 18th century, every two years, the community celebrates this spring fest, in turn with the old town fest. The mayor and the Spring Queen Isabell I will officially open the event at 7 p.m. Saturday in front of the Abbey Church. The enthronement of the spring queen will be conducted with the musical support of the Music Association Harmonie from Otterberg. At 8:30 p.m. the regional band Favorits will start entertaining the audience for the rest of the night. Traditionally, loud gun salutes will

wake up Otterberg citizens at 6 a.m. Sunday. Then musicians of the Music Association Harmonie will walk through the streets of the medieval village performing a musical wake up call. The highlight of the spring fest will be the parade with more than 1,000 participants walking up the decorated main street at 1 p.m. Sunday. Wagons and people in costumes will present the colorful history of Otterberg, there will be people dressed as Cistercian monks, Huguenots, and Wallonians, and noble people in horse-drawn carriages. Spring Queen Isabell l will follow the group in a festive horse-drawn carriage. Local schools, kindergartens, associations and businesses participate

as well. After the parade, everybody will walk about 2 kilometers outside of town toward Höringen to the fest grounds in the forest, where festivities will continue. For those who don’t want to or can’t walk, a shuttle bus will be available. Various music groups from neighboring towns will entertain visitors in the forest. Local restaurants will be in charge of providing food specialties and drinks. Children can enjoy pony riding or take on the challenge of climbing a tree. Everyone making it up to the top will receive a present. Local council members will pass out pretzels to children.

May 31, 2019 Spring fest will continue Monday when the Otterberg Music Association will march to the fest area in the forest again. Visitors are welcome to join the march starting at 2 p.m. from the town hall (Verbandsgemeindeverwaltung). Again, the forest will turn into a fest area with musical entertainment, eating and drinking. At 6:30 p.m. the fest will close out with a parade walking back to the square in front of the Abbey Church. Here, officials and participants will thank the forestry office for letting them use the fest area in the forest. For more information visit: www.otterbach-otterberg.de.

OFF THE BEATEN PATH

Day trips to some of Germany’s hidden gems — Part 1

Old Town hall, Bamberg by Thomas Warner You’ve likely been to the Champs-élysées in Paris or seen the cathedrals at Strasbourg and Cologne. You’ve surely been able to stand up close, beside Big Ben in London and all those were indeed fabulous trips for you and your family. But have you ever seen the world’s tallest cathedral spire or the looked through the world’s oldest piece of stained glass? Have you sought out some not so popular destinations during your stay here in Germany? Germany has so much to offer and many exciting things close to us get overshadowed by all the must-do touristy trips we end up taking during our time here. All of the spots listed below are easily accessible from autobahns, with many hotel and lodging opportunities, and not too costly to undertake. Have you ever been to Bamberg? It’s a small town close to Nuremberg where the long-preserved St. Michel’s (Michelsberg) Monastery is currently part of ongoing revamping and improvements. Parts or all of the church are visible from outside but entrance might not be available depending on work schedules. Tap into a smoked beer or other refreshment at one of the old town pubs and decide what else suits your fancy. Bamberg, with its beer pubs also is

home to the often-overlooked Altenburg castle, several other free or inexpensive cultural buildings, and lots of baroque architecture that gives an old-world feel to the city. Bamberg is less than 60 kilometers from Nuremberg, the site of the post World War II criminal trials and makes for another destination while you are in the area. Closer to home here in the KMC, the Voelklinger Iron Works tour near Saarbruecken is time well spent. The compound gives a glimpse to what life was like as this region evolved away from an agrarian dependence and toward the Industrial Revolution. While there are older sites of this kind, the Voelklinger Works is surely the most well maintained because it was in operation until the 1980s. The world’s oldest examples of stained glass date back to the 11th century and can be found inside the Augsburg Cathedral in southern Germany, just above Munich. These “Prophet Windows” are extraordinary to glimpse and give the visitor a sense of time and place, considering all the people that have come and gone through those halls since medieval times. Also in Augsburg is the Fuggerei, a housing estate created by fabled Jakob the Rich and a community unto itself. Tour the maze of apartments and other dwellings that became a centerpiece for affordable living while all properties around it routinely escalated in price for only 4 Euro. Afterwards, visit the Riegele

craft beer brewery. Family-owned for almost 200 years and with history tracing even further back, Riegele is a place to relax and take inventory of locally created as well as select imported beers that are popular in the region. The Gothic-themed town of Regensburg is also within an hour of Nuremberg and rests peacefully on two sides of the Danube River. Many buildings and monuments in and around the city date back hundreds of years and the area has been given UNESCO Heritage status. The town resembles Kaiserslautern in that it has a university and population of over 150,000 but there is much more of a

homey, laid-back feel to this city and the ones adjacent to it. While in Regensburg, a memorable stopping point is the Historische Wurstkuchl. This is a sausage-themed restaurant that has been serving the regional delicacies for nearly 900 years. Ask the counter person for a suggestion of a well-known meaty menu item and several senf (mustard) offerings are sure to pique your tastebuds. Also, check out Neupfarrplatz — an underground discovery point boasting exhibits from Roman artifacts to war bunker hideaways. Read part 2 in next week’s KA.
