Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. The catalyst that all mold needs is moisture. As such, you are most likely to encounter mold in damp places such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements, and crawl spaces.

So, what can you do? Prevention is the easiest way to control mold. Limiting the amount of moisture using exhaust fans, proper ventilation and routine cleaning will greatly reduce the chances of mold.

Identifying the presence of mold early is critical. Often, it will appear as fuzz or dust on surfaces. Even hard surfaces, such as dressers, appliances, and shelves can develop mold. Be sure to inspect vertical surfaces (walls, sides of dressers, etc.) when cleaning for mold. Also, musty odors may be an indication of mold and should be further investigated by a visual inspection.

Unfortunately, and too often, mold is left unattended, and it flourishes and spreads before anything is done to remove it.

Nation celebrates Native American Heritage Month

Defense Department recognizes November as National American Indian Heritage Month.

“This year’s theme is ‘Tribal Nations Soaring to New Heights.’

President Joe Biden issued a National Native American Heritage Month proclamation for the month of November calling attention to the service of Native Americans.

The proclamation states: “Despite centuries of violence and oppression, Native peoples remain resilient and proud. Today, Native Americans are essential to the fabric of the United States. They serve in the United States armed forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group.

“They continue to steward so many of our great lands. Their contributions to science, humanities, arts, public service, and more have brought prosperity for all of us. Their diverse cultures and communities continue to thrive and lead us forward.”

Ashish S. Vazirani, acting undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, said the

Natives have a long history of military service. During World War II, the legendary contributions of Navajo Code Talkers were critical for U.S. success. Similarly, Alaska Natives fearlessly defended U.S. territories from Japanese raids.

“Many American Indians and Alaska Natives serving today cite a desire to follow in the footsteps of their family members and have a deep patriotism for protecting and serving their homeland,” he said.

Alicia Madalena Sylvester, from the Pueblo of Jemez tribe, is the Defense Department’s senior tribal advisor and liaison for Native American affairs. She and others spoke today at the Pentagon’s National Native American Heritage Month celebration.

Native American men and women serve in the armed forces at five times the national average, Sylvester said. They have served with distinction in every conflict since the birth of this country.

“As Native American veterans have pledged their service to the nation, the Department of Defense is also committed to fulfilling its legal and moral responsibilities,” she said. “I want to assure all tribal leaders present here that DOD is committed to ensuring that government-to-government consultation with American Indian and Alaska Native tribes are consistently timely, respectful, meaningful and robust.”

The Pentagon event included tribal dances from different Native American tribes. “It is truly a blessing to hear the songs, the native language, and drumbeats throughout the Pentagon court-

yard and within our corridors,” she added.

According to the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, the 2023 National American Indian Heritage Month poster depicts America’s landscape interspersed with symbols that depict American Indian and Alaskan Native achievements and contributions.

The poster is also an ode to the “Skywalkers.” Iroquois ironworkers, especially Mohawks, are legendary for their dizzying work in erecting skyscrapers and steel bridges. Mohawk men have walked and worked on nearly all of New York City’s towering buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and Rockefeller Center.

In Pittsburgh, they worked on the U.S. Steel Building, the Civic Arena, and the Fort Pitt Bridge, among other structures.

During the 2020 census, the U.S. Census Bureau identified the following numbers of Native peoples who identify solely as Native American and who are U.S. residents: • American Indian: 2,159,802 • Latin American Indian: 766,112 • Alaska Native: 133,311 • Canadian Indian: 7,723 The census also recorded the following number of U.S. residents who identified as Native Americans of mixed race: • American Indian: 6,363,796 • Latin American Indian: 1,319,523 • Alaska Native: 241,797 • Canadian Indian: 72,701 There are hundreds of Native tribes in the Western Hemisphere.

Nurturing excellence: Empowering women in maintenance through mentorship, community

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Kaitlyn Oiler 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To promote gender diversity and inclusivity within the community, Airmen within the 86th Maintenance Group held the ‘Women of Maintenance Empowerment’ event at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 3.

This event aimed to promote mentorship, followership and support to the 46 of 608 Airmen that are women in maintenance roles within the 86th MXG. “My goal was to bring women of maintenance together and give us a place where we can mentor, encourage and empower each

other to be better versions of ourselves,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Francina Matos, 86th MXG quality assurance inspector and event organizer.

This event played a role in fostering community through discussion and inspiring stories from a guest speaker in another male-dominated career field, Security Forces.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Kellie Sawn, 28th Security Forces Squadron unit deployment manager, was the Lady Eagles program developer while stationed at Ramstein AB three years ago with the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron.

Sawn shared her motivation behind creating a mentorship pro-

gram for women in Security Forces at Ramstein, which had inspired a similar program to start in the 86th MXG. In the coming months, maintenance Airmen will see more opportunities to find mentors or mentor others.

“This event allowed maintenance Airmen a platform to educate others on their new mentorship program,” said Matos. “It was networking at its best!”

The ‘Women of Maintenance Empowerment’ event sets a positive example for promoting diversity and inclusivity in the military, inspiring women to excel in maintenance roles and motivating the next generation of leaders.

Natural Habitat Ramstein Ramstein Air Base is wellknown for being the largest U.S. military installation in Europe.

With the 86th Airlift Wing as host wing, two supporting wings, the Headquarters of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe -- Air Forces Africa, NATO Allied Air Command Headquarters and its support units interacting to support and conduct airlift missions as the main hub in Europe.

Its two runways and the surrounding areas need to be maintained, taking environmental aspects into consideration.

However, Ramstein is much more than a concrete jungle with spacious ramps areas, operational facilities on sealed surfaces, and aircraft hangars. It is also home to a number of natural dwellers that many may not be aware of. It is a valuable habitat for diverse plants, animals and insects lying amid the Palatinate Forest, Germany’s largest coherent forest area.

During the Paleolithic era, about 12,000 years ago, hunters and gatherers populated the region and a large swamp spanning from Ramstein to Homburg slowly formed more than 20 lakes and peat bogs throughout time. During construction of the base in the early 1950s, the impenetrable peat bog

had to be drained in a large-scale landfill activity and railroads tracks were constructed to bring in soil and construction materials.

Based on the original ecological condition of the landscape, the area near the runways still contain several smaller ponds and streams.

These ponds and streams are ideal for versatile species, including threatened or endangered animals and plants. There are over 100 hectares of wetlands and 250 hectares of forest on Ramstein Air Base.

Bats, reptiles, amphibians and insects find an ideal biotope to breed and prosper on Ramstein’s valuable national habitat. Taking a closer look, those interested will discover butterflies, grasshoppers, dragonflies and ground beetles along with over 115 types of plants, such as bee orchid, lousewort and maiden pink. A family of rabbits might scurry over the ground.

Endangered marsh frogs have been heard quacking and a very rare resting bird, the greater short-toed lark was detected May 4 ,2022.

Due to the rarity of the species, the lark detection is to be considered an exceptional occurrence.

The greater short-toed lark inhabits dry, treeless, and shrub-less open landscapes such as dry grasslands and semi-deserts as well as fallow land and barren areas in cultivated landscapes. The species’ range

includes large parts of the southern Palearctic from northwest Africa and Spain to China. In Western and Central Europe, the northernmost breeding occurrences are in central France and Hungary. The observation could be the first record of this species in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Also, a high population with approximately 150 breeding pairs of the common skylark has recently been discovered on the premises.

A falconer is regularly at the runway to deter birds, particularly during the migration season, to maintain aircraft safety. In July 2021, the first and so far, unique detection of a wildcat was achieved via wildcams in the southwest of the base. Hunters are permitted to keep larger animals clear of the runways and taxi ways to ensure ground safety and avoid collisions.

Due to a large number of construction projects in the last three decades more than 30 percent of the original trees had to be cut.

Finding an equilibrium between operational requirements and environmental aspects is a diligent task.

The U.S. Air Force is required to comply fully with German environmental laws as the land itself remains property of the German government.

Reforestation measures were carried out after construction of the northern runway to provide shade and shelter for mammals and birds, as well as sight protection from the autobahn. Additionally, large efforts have been made to create leisure spots for the community such as the pond near the Southside Chapel. It has become a popular recreation spot with picnic tables while a running track on the former railway line was constructed for joggers. It might just be fun to take a walk around the base with colorful red and yellow

leaves during fall, maybe discovering a squirrel bunkering nuts for winter. Onlookers may experience fog lifting from the wetlands near the West Gate on a misty fall morning.

The Kaiserslautern Military Community draws all of its drinking water from 15 deep wells several hundred feet below ground. Water is pumped from the wells, treated and then distributed within the community. To keep drinking water clean, the local environmental teams monitor more than 1,000 groundwater wells along on Ramstein Air Base.

The 86th Civil Engineer Environmental Office engages in close ties with various German agencies such as the Federal and State Forest Departments and the Upper and Lower Environmental Authorities in Rheinland-Pfalz to maintain a balance between wildlife and operational needs. In addition, mission requirements, logistics and daily tasks need to be taken into consideration. This is where the Environmental Office acts as a liaison between U.S. military organizations and German environmental agencies.

The office is also instrumental in planning and organizing annual Earth Day events, which take place in April. Activities such as tree plant-

ing events, building bat houses, educational activities for children, and visiting the water treatment plant are scheduled next spring. In addition, the office is developing a nature walking path and preparing for the 20-year anniversary of the opening and re-naturalization of Mehlinger Heide, an area near Sembach, once used for military maneuvers.

A group of 25 trainees and their instructors from the Federal Forest Department visited Ramstein in October to strengthen ties, enhance communication and for a better overall understanding of Ramstein’s biome. First the students received a briefing and an overview of the installation and its diverse biotopes. The group then had a chance to discuss issues, ask questions and familiarize themselves in a casual get-together at lunch.

The group then set out to a tour of the base to view base facilities such as the housing area, schools, operational buildings, dormitories and a glimpse of the runways. It also used the opportunity to visit valuable biotopes such as the southern part of the air base, areas including special sites with high biotope or habitat value for rare or endangered species of flora and fauna and forestry areas throughout the base.

The tour was rounded off with the chance to climb on board a U.S. C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. Members of the 86th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron hosted the guests and explained features of the aircraft, operational requirements and reported about their daily tasks as maintainers. The group was amazed by the complexity of the U.S. installation, not comparable to any other in their areas of responsibility and was truly impressed with the air base being such a diverse biotope with an abundance of wildlife.

Story and photos by Eleanor Prohaska 21st Theater Sustainment Command The MV Cape Wrath made a bold statement when it pulled into the port of Livorno Oct. 28, carrying equipment assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). Soldiers and civilians from the 386th Movement Control Team, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command and 839th Transportation Battalion, 598th Transportation Brigade, made sure that message was delivered.

“I told them in the rehearsal of concept, when they see the Cape Wrath pulling into the port of Livorno, it is all about being able to project combat power in any region of the world, in the time and place of our choosing,” said Lt. Col. Michael Harrell, 839th Transportation Battalion commander.

The reception and staging of more than 450 pieces of equipment, including Humvees, palletized loading systems and light trucks was the largest U.S. port operation in Livorno in more than five years. Equally important are the onward movement plans for transporting the organic equipment belonging to the 3rd IBCT/101st ABN DIV (AASLT), from Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The unit is also known as the Rakkasans.

“For the first time, after so many years, we will be able to load a train with 48 pieces that will go to various destinations in eastern and northern Europe,” said Monica Simoncini, 839th Trans BN terminals and documentation chief.

According to 2nd Lt. Samuel Rupert, 386th MCT, remaining equipment will be transported via commercial line haul. He said teamwork and planning are critical when transport-

ing the equipment from Italy through various European nations.

“It’s a lot of interfacing with line haul companies, rail companies, working with the unit movement officers and 839th to make sure all of the correct equipment is downloaded and moved forward to wherever it needs to go across eastern Europe,” said Rupert.

He added that a benefit to receiving equipment through Livorno is being able to take advantage of the longstanding relationships the U.S. has forged in Italy, including the knowledge and expertise of its local national workforce.

“The U.S. has been here [in Italy] since 1952, so we have those long, tiedin relationships,” said Rupert. “Italy has been a long-term partner to the United States. It’s good to be able to use that partnership. We have Camp Darby right down the road, and it’s a great asset to be able to store equipment and stage it and move some of the harder cargo across Europe.”

He said he was excited about doing the mission from the port of Livorno, as it opens the whole southern side of the European theater to a new entrance.

“It’s awesome to be able to open up a new port, especially when we are so tied in and we have the ability to take our time and do it right,” said Rupert.

Helping to make sure everything was done right, Sgt. 1st Class Ana

Schroeder, 3rd IBCT/101st ABN DIV (AASLT) mobility noncommissioned officer in charge, was in Livorno overseeing the safe operation and deployment of her unit’s equipment and people.

“It is important that our equipment maintains its state of readiness whenever it gets to our forward location so that we are prepared to move when necessary and to jump into the fight at all times,” said Schroeder. She appreciated the teamwork that went into their deployment.

“Our experience with the 21st TSC movement control team has been seamless and effortless,” said Schroeder. “They are a huge asset and have been readily available and knowledgeable to answer any questions we have and to assist with whatever we might need.”

Schroeder said her unit is excited to work with U.S. allies in Europe.

“We are ready to show Europe why we are known around the world,” she said. “Europe will get to see the Rakkasans in action.”

The Rakkasans are deploying approximately 3,400 soldiers in a onefor-one unit replacement, as the 1st Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, redeploys back to Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The deployment is in support of European and NATO allies and partners, and does not change the overall U.S. force posture in the region.

Garrison leaders gather for pivotal planning that helps ‘set Garrison’ Story and photos by Linda Lambiotte U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Leaders and team members from various U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz directorates gathered for an Installation Planning Board development event at the Rheinlander Community Center, Nov. 1.

The IPB is an event that includes an audience with general officers, the Installation Management Command-Europe regional director and others. The board is a forum for identifying, assessing, and creating a unified understanding of installationwide planning requirements for the upcoming year.

The board’s purpose is to develop an Integrated Priorities List. The list supports improving installation services and programs in consideration of the mission support partners, tenant units and non-government organizations. To help build the list, the team used the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) strategy/analysis for each line of effort presented.

“The Installation Planning Board is the principle executive forum for the integration of all installation support efforts and alignment of tenant activities with the Senior Commander’s Vision,” explained Tommy Mize, IMCOM-E Regional Director, in a message to garrison leaders.

The “heavy lift” of the IPB falls upon the garrison’s Plans, Analysis and Integration Office and its leader Charles Azotea. Azotea said gathering the brainpower of the garrison’s leadership team, as well as deputies and division chiefs, helped lead to productive ends.

“We were fortunate to have all those folks in the room,” Azotea said. “The IPB will go through many iterations before we present to our audience, but the importance of getting this input and crosstalk now makes a different down the road.”

The successful execution of action plans tied to the IPL is considered an indicator or measure of how well a garrison is performing.

Paul Hossenlopp, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz deputy to the garrison commander, talked about the importance of using a day to have garrison directors and staff leads focus on IPB development. He said the workshop, which included about 35 staff members, highlighted the value it brings to the organization as well as the value achieved through teamoriented collaboration among the

“What we did today as a group is a great guide for the way forward to the IPB, but now we have

some work to do to articulate it the right way,” Hossenlopp said.

Participants in the workshop echoed the DGC’s sentiment.

as a garrison to ‘set the theater,”’ said Jason Tudor, executive officer, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz. “Getting this team together to think through what’s of most value to our Soldiers, family members and civilians is important.”

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond Wrensch, who assumed responsibilities of the garrison Oct. 19, said the event helped him tremendously in understanding what the organization needs to focus on.

“There are a lot of things that I am learning every day about garrison operations,” he said, “and our goal is to make sure that the team has a shared understanding of what we are trying to communicate, to ensure everything will go smooth later on.”

In his closing remarks, Col. Reid E. Furman, USAG RheinlandPfalz garrison commander, thanked everyone and said that the IPB will set up the garrison for success.

“For everything we do as a garrison, we do mission planning, follow a process, and then operationalize it,” he said. “I want to thank everybody who attended today for their cross-talk, engagement, and for the ownership in this process.”

First Sgt. Jonathan Holden received the unit’s colors from Captain Gabriela Montañez, HHC commander.

Holden comes from the 377th

Theater Sustainment Command in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he served as the company first sergeant. Prior to that, he served within the 21st Theater Sustainment Command located on Panzer Kaserne in Kaiserslautern, from 2017-2020.

“I was really surprised to be selected for this assignment because I left Germany only a few years ago,” said Holden. “But I am glad to be back!”

After enlisting in the U.S. Army in 2003, Holden developed an extensive background in Army

logistics, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, a minor in sociology, and a master’s degree in business administration.

He is now looking forward to working with everybody at USAG Rheinland-Pfalz.

“As a servant leader, it is my job to take care of our people, as well as their health, morale, discipline and welfare,” he said. “I look forward to assisting the company commander in maintaining the successful standard, as well as enhancing the proficiency of our company.”

Carla also updates the DEERS system.

Carla has been working with U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz for 7 months but has had over 20 years of providing customer service. A little more than three of those years has been assisting the military community.

“I love providing customer service to the entire military community, DOD civilians, and civilians. I enjoy assisting everyone that comes through our MPD office. My biggest fulfillment is when I am able to find the solution, answer, and solve my customer’s needs. I get to see the direct results and positive impact of my services as a human resources assistant, passport agent, and site security manager.”

The thoughts of fight or flight race through the enemy combatant’s mind. Hands shoot up in the air. No choice now but to surrender or perish.

Luckily it is only a training exercise. Additional 569th USFPS members move nearby with tactical precision while securing other objectives.

It is like a ballet of lethality, with the performers employing and honing the deadly arts with accuracy and ferocity.

The training scenario ends nearly as quickly as it began, and they set up to do it all over again. This marks another day of training in the books for the 569th United States Forces Police Squadron.

The unit must be ready for anything and go wherever the mission takes them. Training is critical to the success of the 569th USFPS mission and they must practice like fight.

“We conduct training like this regularly in order to keep our people in fighting condition,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Malik Laws, 569th USFPS training instructor. “We must ensure we are good to go in order to respond to anything. We

train like we fight because our adversaries and environment are always changing, and we must find a way to stay ahead of the curve.”

New fights mean new ways of thinking. The Airmen at the 569th USFPS are training for the fights of the future, and it starts with the more experienced Airmen training the newer ones for every possible scenario of which leaders can think.

“We are training our Airmen for future conflicts and what the wars of the future might entail,” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Christopher Helmes, 569th operations flight chief. “We are shifting some of our operations to more of an air base defense style, so we have to train a lot to be able to implement new strategies.”

Laws and the other 569th USFPS instructors are training their members on multiple scenarios such as building clearance, repelling ambushes, indirect fire, team communication, tactical movements and more.

He and his menagerie of capable instructors keep their team up to date on training requirements to be able to deploy where they are needed.

“We have a diverse mission set here,” Laws said. “We are on and off base serving our community. Acting as ambassadors to communities abroad. We must ensure we come with our game faces on so we can do our best to protect and serve those who need it most. We cannot do that without good thorough

training and an understanding of what we do day in and day out.”

The world is always changing and so are training requirements in the U.S. military. Laws said the worst thing any organization can do is sit still and rest on their laurels.

“Of all the adversaries out there, complacency is the one we should fear the most,” He added. “We work every day harder and harder to make sure we are better today than we were yesterday.”

Helmes believes the same and could not stress the importance of this training enough.

Helmes, although a student in the annual training course, led his team to success and passed the course. His hope is to see his unit implement their new skills to help protect the community and serve U.S. defense interests around the globe.

“We train like this to instill a standard of excellence in our squadron,” Helmes said. “We train like this to drill it into our heads and make it like muscle memory.

We want it to be like clockwork and have our guys know what to do in these situations. This is one of the best teams I have ever worked with, and I cannot wait to see what our team will accomplish in the future.”

Whatever the future may hold, defenders like the ones from the 569th USFPS will train to confront them and protect and serve the community no matter where that community may be.

A chocolate-colored Labrador Retriever, Biscuit, is the former Washington Capitals’ team pup and service dog with America’s VetDogs. He was formally placed with Walter Reed’s Facility Dog Program upon his enlistment. The program includes a team of K-9s that provide comfort and help to patients and staff, as well boost

spirits and morale around the medical center. The K-9s are paired with the various military services and wear specially designed vests tailored from the uniforms of former service members. They are also awarded honorary titles of the service they represent.

Biscuit was appointed as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps and tasked with “following the orders and directions from wounded warriors.” The enlistment oath he received charged him with “supporting and defending Marines and wounded warriors against all unhappy feelings, foreign and domestic, and bearing unconditional love and allegiance to the same.”

Navy Capt. (Dr.) Melissa Austin, WRNMMC director, said

Biscuit has already captured the hearts of people as the Washington Capitals team pup and now is embarking on the next phase of his journey as a facility dog at the medical center.

“Biscuit’s impact with the Capitals has been profound,” said Austin. “He’s not only a mascot, but also a beacon of joy and resilience.

Walter Reed’s facility dog program is a testament to the therapeutic impact of our furry friends. These animals do more than fetch and rollover…they heal.”

For the past two years as the Washington Capitals team pup, Biscuit participated in games, skated on the rink with his teammates, shared countless affectionate moments with staffers and fans, and championed various

ager/Quality Directorate and Facility Dog Program manager.

She explained WRNMMC’s facility dogs make frequent visits to patients and staff in the inpatient and outpatient areas at the medical center. They also visit Inpatient Behavioral Health patients as well as provide support for the Brain Fitness Clinic.

In addition, they provide support for the Military Advanced Training Center Occupational and Physical Therapy Clinics. Facility dogs are also part of special events, including military ceremonies, holiday events, Wounded Warrior adaptive sports events and more.

Following the enlistment ceremony, the Capitals and Biscuit visited with patients, their families and staff in the MATC.

The white cliffs of Jasmund National Park Without a doubt, the massive, white, chalky cliffs are the defining feature of Jasmund National Park. Nearly 400 feet high in some places, the cliffs make visitors feel like they’re in another world, especially when you’re walking the rugged beach and looking upward. From up above, the cliffs make for excellent photo ops. Most people won’t believe you if you tell them you’re in Germany!

There are, however, two very important caveats about the cliffs: first, it is forbidden to climb them. Park rules are very specific about this, for reasons related to visitor safety (they’re super steep) and conservation (chalk doesn’t hold up as well to human feet as, say, granite). Second, you have to watch out for falling rocks: as noted previously, chalk is not the most stable material.

If you’re really into chalk, make sure you check out the (surprisingly fascinating!) Rügen Chalk Museum, located at the western edge of the park. The only chalk museum in Europe, it is located in an old chalk mining factory. Note: the museum is closed for most of January.

old-growth beech forests, wild grassland, moors, and more — it’s perfect for walkers, hikers, runners, and cyclists.

The park also provides a great place to explore all year round. As perhaps you’ve experienced, winter hiking in Germany can be fantastic. The same thing holds true within the park. Facing down the Baltic Sea in, say, late December is bracing to say the least. But it’s also incredible. You’ll rarely feel more alive when you’re standing at the top of the park’s white cliffs while the water goes wild below.

Königstuhl National Park Center Located above the famous chalk cliffs, Königstuhl offers one of the park’s best experiences. There, visitors will find fascinating exhibitions about the park’s history, geology and ecology. You’ll also get to experience a newly built (and awesome) Skywalk, on which you’ll feel like you’re floating above the cliffs.

The Königstuhl center is one of the few

places in the park that charges an admission fee. Tickets cost €12 per adult and €6 for children ages 6-14. Children 5 and under are free, and family tickets are available for €25.

Getting to Jasmund National Park By car, the park is nine hours from Kaiserslautern, 10 hours from Stuttgart, and eight hours from Wiesbaden. It makes an excellent side trip from Berlin or Lübeck, and is an equally strong choice for a long weekend in a nearby village such as Sassnitz.

ABC IN KMC: Advent

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Advent, advent — a cheerful holiday season Advent is a special time full of century-old traditions as well as modern customs in Germany.

The noun “advent” refers to ‘a coming into place, view or being; arrival.’ More commonly the term is used to describe the season and the four weeks leading up to Christmas.

Advent wreaths One of the older customs is that of the Adventskranz, a wreath bound out of fir branches and decorated with four candles. The first candle is lit on the fourth Sunday prior to

Christmas, taking place on Dec. 3 this year.

The second candle is lit on the following Sunday and so forth up to Christmas.

Advent calendars Another fun-filled tradition, especially loved by younger (and maybe even older) children is the Advent calendar. The calendar can be store bought filled with chocolate, sweets or other small surprises or just as well be homemade using small jute sacks, colorful boxes, cloth pockets sewn onto textile backgrounds or in any other creative style. The individual days are marked with numbers from one to 24 and starting on Dec. 1, the recipient can open one “door” and find a surprise to sweeten the waiting time and countdown to Christmas.

St. Nicholas Dec. 6 marks the arrival of St.

Nicholas who visits children and fills their freshly shined shoes with small presents such as chocolate, fruits, nuts or small toys. The tradition dates back to the fourth century when Bishop Nicholas of Myra (now in Turkey) brought fruits, nuts and tangerines to poor families.

Cheerfully decorated cities Shops, streets and private houses are brightly decorated with lights, decorated indoor and outdoor trees and colorful ornaments as in many other countries around the world.

Glamorously decorated stores are packed with presents to be bought, gifts to be wrapped and special seasonal dishes are on offer.

Christmas Markets The Weihnachtsmarkt or Christkindlsmarkt are not to be forgotten, which take place in towns and cities around the country. One of the most famous markets is the

Weihnachtsmarkt in Trier, but other venues, such as medieval markets taking place in castles have become popular in recent years. The Christmas market in Kaiserslautern will be held from Nov. 20 to Dec. 23 and then again as a “New Year’s Market” from Dec. 27 to 30. The annual Cultural Market, located within the Fruchthalle takes place from Dec. 1 to 23.

Cheerfully decorated wooden booths offer handcrafted gifts, decorations, toys, candles and ornaments. Delicious Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Rostbratwurst, crepes and sweets will let your mouth water and drinks such as spicy Glühwein (mulled wine), punch and hot chocolate will keep visitors warm on cold winter evenings, while the aroma of cinnamon, cloves and oranges, and scented candles will lift you into the holiday spirit.

Heiligabend / Christmas Eve Finally, on Christmas Eve on Dec. 24, families traditionally meet for a light dinner and wait for the gentle tingling of a bell. This marks the arrival of the Christkind (Christ child) or the Weihnachtsmann (similar to Santa Claus) who brings children gifts.

Some families sing Christmas carols together, others might visit a church service, while it has become popular for the younger folks to head out to Christmas parties after exchanging gifts.
