Third Air Force commander, Maj. Gen. Randall Reed, and Third Air Force Command Chief Master Sgt. Heriberto Diaz visited the 86th Airlift Wing for an immersion tour at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 2-3. Reed and Diaz met with Airmen from different units across the 86 AW to receive insight about contributions units and Airmen make in support of the USAFE-AFAFRICA mission. “Our Airmen and Guardians are fantastic,” Reed said. “No matter whether they are in Europe or Africa, they’re solving complicated problems and producing security.” Multiple 86 AW units showcased the achievements of their Airmen, newly developed innovations and projects planned for the future. “The world is looking to the United States to be great partners and in some cases to lead,” said Reed. “They’re looking at Third Air Force Airmen and Guardians to fulSee VALUE OF 86 AW, Page 3

COMMENTARY: Message from Secretary of Defense Statement by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III observing National Veterans and Military Families Month Our families serve every bit as much as we do. That’s one reason why it’s so important during this National Veterans and Military Families Month that we take time to recognize them for the sacrifices they make and for the support they continue to give all those who have worn — and who still wear — the uniform. I remember my own days in uniform, and I can’t begin to
imagine how much more difficult my Army career would have been were it not for my spouse, Charlene, and my incredible family. The frequent moves, the multiple deployments, the strain and the stress over the last twenty years of war — my family and all of yours have borne it with grace and resilience. But it goes beyond that, of course. They don’t just bear the hardships; our families make us a stronger force, a healthier force. They make sacrifices themselves, to be sure,
but they also make possible the sacrifices our men and women sustain. Put simply, our families make us more ready every day for the task of defending this nation. And they do the very same for our veterans, from helping with the transition to civilian life to care-giving and emotional support. They are there for us, and so we must be there for them. Arm-in-arm with our colleagues at the Department of Veterans Affairs, we will continue to meet the challenges our mili-
tary families face: mental health and well-being, childcare and schooling, food and economic security, and spouse employment, to name but a few. And we know that the COVID-19 pandemic has only made these challenges, and many others, more difficult. We have much work to do. And I want each and every military family to know we will stay committed to that work, the same way they have stayed committed to their loved ones and to this nation they help defend. As I said, our families serve
every bit as much as we do. The month of November provides us a terrific opportunity to say thank you for that, but we need to treat the effort of improving their lives as the critical task it must be. To all our veteran and military families … thank you! We honor your sacrifice. We recognize your resilience. We hold dear to our hearts your ceaseless love and support. We owe that and so much more. Please find more information for families at militaryonesource.mil.

VALUE OF 86 AW from Page 1 fill responsibilities, work together, train together, and when it boils down to it, we deter together.” During the visit, Reed and Diaz attended briefings with the 86th Civil Engineer Group, the 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron, the 86th Maintenance Group and other units that played significant roles in Operation Allies Refuge/ Welcome. During these briefings, Airmen outlined the importance of readiness. “Volunteers, spouses, entire families showed up doing everything they could to make room for thousands of people who made a very brave and courageous decision,” said Reed. While traveling to each unit, Reed and Diaz recognized Airmen from the 86 AW as superior performers after learning about each Airman’s accomplishments from their leadership. Throughout the tour, Reed and
Diaz prioritized meeting and talking with Airmen. While witnessing the installation showcase its critical mission capabilities was a large focus, 3 AF leadership wanted to ensure they could connect with Airmen and help them understand the value they bring to the theater. “What I’m here to do is make sure that the men and women of the 86th Airlift Wing understand that the world values them,” said Reed. “What an amazing wing! What an amazing collection of folks with an impossible-sized mission! Ramstein is one of the most important spots that the Air Force has. We send our very best here for a reason because we ask and demand so much of them 24/7. Just about every combatant command depends on the folks here, what they produce and what they do. So, men and women of the 86 AW, thank you for being you, and I couldn’t be more proud of you.”

Recommended holiday season mailing dates, tips by Lionel Rivera United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa Air Postal Squadron/Post Office The recommended holiday season mailing dates for Air Force customers assigned to the European theater are: • USPS Retail Ground/Space Available Mail (SAM) – Nov. 27 • First Class Mail/Priority Mail – Dec. 11 • Priority Mail Express Military Service (PMEMS) – Dec. 18 These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Customers in the United States who mail to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses normally use similar recommended mailing dates. “U.S. Air Forces Europe and Air Forces Africa postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive to intended U.S. destinations in time for the holidays,” said Mr. Lionel Rivera, USAFE-AFAFRICA Air Postal Squadron Postal Operations Flight. Customers can avoid long lines at the post office when they mail early and can take advantage of using the cheaper, although slower, USPS Retail Ground/SAM service military post offices offer in Europe. “USPS Retail Ground/
SAM service takes longer to arrive at the end destination and moves via ground once it arrives in the states”, said Mr. Rivera. Customers who want faster service should consider using priority mail or priority mail express military service if available. This costs more but these classes of mail get preferred and/or expedited service. Most mail accepted at military post offices in Europe is flown to the United States on commercial aircraft. Once mail arrives stateside, it’s transported based on the service selected and paid for. Customers should keep in mind, packages transiting through the mail stream are handled numerous times, and therefore proper packaging is very important. The following USPS mailing tips are provided to help ensure packages arrive safely and undamaged: The Box Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents. Sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are best for weights up to 10 pounds. If reusing a box, cover up or markout any old labels and markings. USPS Provided Boxes Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail boxes are available at no cost to the customer at the post
office for items sent using either of these services. Cushioning Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough padding. Place an extra address label with the delivery and return addresses inside the package to ensure it can be delivered in case the outside label becomes damaged or falls off. Sealing Tape the box shut and reinforce the seams with 2-inch wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape. Liquids (Some host country restrictions applies, check with your post office personnel) Nonflammable, nonhazardous liquids are acceptable to mail, if sealed inside a waterproof container. The outer container with the address label should also be strong and securely sealed. Mailers must mark the outer container of a mailpiece containing liquid to indicate the nature of the contents, and annotate “this side up” on the package. Packages containing liquids need to be carefully packed to withstand the grueling transportation journey. Size The weight of each package cannot exceed 70 pounds. For customers planning to use Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail services for faster delivery, length plus girth (girth is the distance around the thickest part of the package) cannot exceed 108 inches. For USPS Retail Ground/ SAM, the total girth cannot exceed 130 inches. Packages are also subject to minimum dimensions. No package may be smaller than 5 inches long, 3-1/2 inches high and be at least 0.007 inches thick. Correct Address Using a complete and correct address is critical for timely delivery. To find the correct spelling of a city name and state abbreviation or to find a ZIPCode, visit www.usps.com. Print or type the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the package. Type or print clearly
with a pen or permanent marker so that the address is legible from an arm’s length away. Return Address Print or type the address in the upper left corner on the same side of the package as the delivery address. USPS Extra Services Extra services can provide additional protection and peace of mind. • Adult Signature - Requires the signature of someone 21 years of age or older at the recipient’s address. • Certificate of Mailing Provides evidence of mailing. • Certified Mail - Provides proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. • Insured Mail - Provides coverage against loss or damage up to $5,000. Fee based on value of item. »»USPS Priority Mail service includes up to $50 of insurance with most shipments (restrictions apply) »»USPS Priority Mail Express includes up to $100 of insurance with most shipments (restrictions apply) • Registered Mail (service not available at all locations) Provides maximum security. Includes proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Insurance can be added up to $50,000. Fee based on value of item. • USPS Tracking - Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Free with select services. • Signature Confirmation Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery and the name of the person who signed for the item. Customers can request a printed copy of the signature. • Return Receipt - Provides a postcard or electronic notification with the date of delivery and recipient signature. • Restricted Delivery Confirms that only a specified person, or authorized agent, will receive a piece of mail. • Special Handling — Fragile - Is a domestic extra service offered to our customers for a fee to enhance their shipping options, but does not insure the item against loss or damage. Customs Declaration Form All mail originating outside
of the United States is subject to customs examination. Mailers are responsible for accurately completing USPS customs forms when mailing packages containing dutiable goods to the United States. Mailers are also required to certify the information provided is correct and the items do not contain any dangerous article, or articles prohibited by legislation or by postal or customs regulations. Customers can avoid waiting in line longer at post office finance windows if they complete an online customs declaration form using the USPS website prior to presenting packages for mailing at the APO. In addition, some post offices will make available or offer a separate, expedited mail acceptance window as an incentive for customers who arrive at the post office with online, pre-printed USPS electronic customs declarations forms. Customers have several options available to them when completing required electronic customs declarations using the USPS.com website: Option 1: Customers can chose the USPS Click-N-Ship feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards. Option 2: Customers can print a customs declaration at home on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing. Option 3: Postal patrons who do not present articles for mailing with an online declaration can still mail their packages using the hard copy PS Form 2976-R, USPS Customs Declaration and Dispatch Note declaration form. However, the accepting finance mail clerk must enter the information from the PS Form 2976-R into the Customs Border Protection Manifest system via the USPS Point of Sale retail terminal with the customer present, as clarifying questions may be required to ensure that PS Form 2976-R contains accurate and complete data to complete the mailing transaction. This will result in longer customer waiting times and longer lines at the post office finance windows. Contact the local installation postmaster for additional information on customs form requirements and for advice on the best service to use based on your mailing needs.

Defense Logistics Agency ships vaccines for children overseas by Beth Reece Defense Logistics Agency The Defense Logistics Agency is receiving, packing and shipping pediatric doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine overseas for children, ages 5 to 11, of Defense Department personnel. Orders for 30,900 doses have already been placed by military treatment facilities in the U.S. European, Central and IndoPacific Commands. The vaccines are being packed and shipped from DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, to 18 locations that have been processing vaccines since the agency began distributing them for older populations in December. Pfizer vaccines for the 5 to 11 age group are smaller doses than those given to other ages and can be shipped at either 2 to 8 degrees Celsius or minus 90 to minus 60
degrees Celsius. DLA will ship at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius and include ancillary kits with smaller syringes and needles for administering the vaccine to children. Navy Cmdr. Mark Rozzell, who leads vaccine operations for DLA Distribution, said challenges — including customs clearance and identifying which locations can receive and further distribute the vaccine — have already been overcome since DLA distributed the adult Pfizer vaccine. “We also have well-defined, cold-chain management practices in place and strong cold-chain support through the medical team at DLA Troop Support,” he added. “DLA Troop Support has done an outstanding job coordinating with the MTFs [military treatment facilities] to ensure the vaccines are delivered at the proper temperature in addition to being properly stored.” COVID-19 vaccines arrive in Korea after being packed and shipped from Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pa., March 8, 2020. The agency has so far shipped more than 840,000 COVID-19 vaccines for employees and families outside the continental United States and sailors deployed with the U.S. Navy fleet. The agency has so far shipped 844,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for DOD employees stationed outside the continental U.S. and the deployed U.S. Navy fleet. It began shipping vaccines in mid-May for 12to 17-year-olds. Even after 10 months of vaccine shipments, the agency shipped more than 5,700 adult doses during the week of Oct. 25. Though some of those were booster shots, many were for employees aiming to meet the
Nov. 22 deadline for federal employees to be fully vaccinated, said Army Col. Anthony Bostick, DLA headquarters’ vaccination distribution lead. “At the same time, MTFs are ordering flu vaccines. We’re shipping those and providing 13 other vaccines, which include flu and coronavirus vaccines, for Afghan refugees,” he said. DLA distribution staff members are prepared to handle first and second doses for children while continu-
ing to support adult COVID-19 vaccines, boosters and the flu vaccine, Rozzell added. “The vaccine mission isn’t going away any time soon because studies are showing these vaccines wane over time whether it’s the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson version,” Bostick continued. “It’ll probably become another annual vaccination just like we have with the flu, which we’ve been doing successfully for over 20 years.”

Ramstein FLEXes it forward
U.S. Air Force Airmen from the 86th Communications Squadron, 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron and 786th Civil Engineer Squadron participate in a mentoring session during their Facility Leadership and Excellence program class at Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 4. Mentoring sessions allow new Airmen to ask questions, learn more about the Air Force and how to become effective leaders.
Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Madelyn Keech 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs When many people hear about the Facility and Leadership Excellence team at Ramstein Air Base, they may assume it is just a normal base clean-up group. U.S. Air Force Senior Airman James Frick, 786th Civil Engineer Squadron FLEX program lead, took over the position as the team lead in February. Frick said he felt called to make drastic changes to the FLEX program, which used to be the Facility Excellence Team. While Airmen who are selected for FLEX do conduct base beautification, much of the time spent in FLEX is attending classes focusing on mentoring sessions from distinguished guests, on-base immersions and leadership classes. Classes go over goal-setting, effective communication techniques, teamwork and other topics teaching participants long-lasting skills. The goal is to invest in the Airmen, who are usually new to the Air Force. “We are providing a platform for them to succeed and ask questions to learn various skills,” Frick said. “Being able to pay it forward and give leadership techniques to them as well as getting feedback from people is what we’re contributing to. We place a high priority on how we are developing Airmen, how we are developing people and
how we are developing them to be a leader.” Frick said part of teaching leadership skills to Airmen is showing it to them in person in units around Ramstein such as the air traffic control tower, to gain a better understanding of how these leadership lessons are practiced in the operational Air Force. Airman 1st Class Tanya Howett, 86th Communications Squadron network infrastructure technician, said she didn’t feel confident in her ability to lead before going through
the FLEX program. However, she was pushed to go out of her comfort zone. “It really showed me that if you try something, you can succeed,” Howett said. She said one of the things she loved most about the class was being able to meet Airmen from different career fields and continuing personal and professional relationships with them outside of FLEX. “The main thing that I took away from FLEX is being able to see the whole picture within the

Frick saw the opportunity to take over as lead of the FLEX program and re-centered the focus to be on new Airmen through hosting leadership classes, immersions on base, and mentoring sessions to give back and invest in the future of the Air Force.
puzzle,” Howett said. “When you are in your workspace, you just see your job, but when you come here you get to meet people that you might not have met.” Frick said one of the most inspiring things he sees is Airmen thriving as they go through the two-week-long class and take their skills to the operational Air Force.
One of the goals Frick has for the program is for it to be implemented at other bases. “New Airmen are important,” he said. “If we do not take this time to invest in them now, we cannot improve and innovate our force as a whole. We try to do as much as we can to facilitate, organize and support that growth.”

Story and photos by Airman Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Safety and security were at the forefront of considerations for Operation Allies Welcome. Throughout OAW, Senior Airman Chasity Sellers, 86th Security Forces Squadron operations support assistant, was assigned as a security forces team leader. Sellers was called upon to be the primary Unit Control Center representative for the 86 SFS operations section, ensuring clear and concise communication between security forces and the Emergency Operations Center. Sellers’ passion for helping
operations run smoothly and providing her peers the information they need to be successful made her the perfect candidate for her unit’s sponsorship program. The sponsor program welcomes all new 86 SFS members and shows them what their time at Ramstein Air Base will look like. “As a sponsor, you are the first contact for either new Airmen straight out of tech school, or Airmen that have been stationed all over the world already,” Sellers said. “It is up to you to set the standard and show them what is expected from them at the shop.” Newcomers at Ramstein will go through lengthy in-processing where they complete a multitude
of tasks including finding a house, bringing their families overseas, adjusting their pay, and going to medical check-ups. “It’s stressful moving overseas. Not only are you setting the expectations, but you are also welcoming and making them feel comfortable as well,” Sellers said. “I try to mitigate that stress by sharing the knowledge I have and make them feel welcome.” Helping new members move bases takes a lot of time and dedication. For Sellers, the gym allows her to blow off some steam. “What got me into weightlifting was my military training instructor during Basic Military Training,” Sellers said. “She was so awesome

Weightlifting has not only helped Sellers in her personal life, but also helped her become the Airman she is now by providing her the energy, confidence and sleep to exceed her expectations. Sellers was awarded Ramstein’s Airlifter of the Week, Oct. 27, for her commitment to helping people and her ability to persevere under any environment. “A lot of Airmen come to me and ask me ‘what does it take to be below the zone?’ I feel like [Sellers has] all the right qualities Airmen should strive for,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Bryant Roy, 86 AW operations group superintendent. “Not only are you looked at formally as a leader, but informally as well. The fact that your supervisor holds you in such high regard that she can go to you for anything already puts you on the map.” Moving to Ramstein at the peak of OAW and having to balance inprocessing and her normal job, Sellers has not only met the expectations, but exceeded them. “I just show up to work and I try to do the best that I can,” Sellers said. “For someone to acknowledge and appreciate that makes me motivated to do even more than I’ve already done.” Sellers’ personal and professional journey does not end here. She plans on pursuing a career in the military working dog section in the 86 SFS.

Medal of Honor Monday: Army Pvt. David B. Barkeley
A view from across the Meuse River of the central part of what was left of St. Mihiel, France, on Feb. 1, 1919.
by Katie Lange Department of Defense News Army Pvt. David B. Barkeley likely didn’t know that World War I would end just two days after he volunteered for a treacherous mission. What he did know was that his unit needed reconnaissance that he could provide, so he didn’t hesitate. He lost his life during that mission, but the bravery he showed earned him the Medal of Honor. Barkeley was born March 31, 1899, in Laredo, Texas, to parents Josef and Antonia. The family moved to San Antonio in 1904 after his sister, Amelia, was born. According to the Texas State Cemetery website, Barkeley’s dad, who had once been a soldier, abandoned the family when he was young. This forced Barkeley to drop out of school at age 13 to find jobs to support his mother and sister. Barkeley’s mother was the daughter of Mexican immigrants, so for much of his life he went by Barkeley-Cantu — which represented his father’s surname and his mother’s maiden name. But he changed it to just Barkeley when he joined the Texas National Guard in 1917. The U.S. had joined World War

I, and Barkeley wanted to fight on the front. However, he knew he couldn’t if the Army was aware of his Hispanic heritage. At that time, Army policy relegated non-white soldiers to noncombat support battalions. So, Barkeley kept his heritage quiet. He even instructed his mom to not use her surname in letters for fear they would find out and move him out of a combat role. Barkeley was placed with Company A of the 356th Infantry, 89th Division, and sent to Europe with the American Expeditionary Forces in August of 1918. On Nov. 9, 1918, Barkeley’s unit was stuck along the banks of the Meuse River near Pouilly, France. Across the river, a well-fortified German Army was bombarding them with artillery, as well as machine gun fire and bombs from airplanes. To break through the lines, they needed to find out the enemy’s exact

position, the depth of the river and where American troops could cross easiest to strike. To do that, someone would need to cross the frigid river to do reconnaissance. Barkeley, who was known as a strong swimmer as a child, immediately volunteered, even though the mission was treacherous and the chance of survival was slim. He and another volunteer soldier, Army Private 1st Class Harold Johnson, prepared themselves as best they could before climbing into the icy river. Despite the cold and the threat of enemy patrol boats and gunfire, the pair made it across the Meuse. While on the opposite bank, they gleaned what they could about the enemy’s position, then headed back across the river. Johnson completed the trek but just barely. He had to be pulled from the water after nearly freezing to death. Unfortunately, Barkeley didn’t survive. Before he could make it back to the American side

of the river, he was seized by cramps and drowned. He was 19. Two days later, the armistice went into effect and World War I was over. Neither man’s effort was in vain, though. Barkeley’s family received notice in early February 1919 that he had earned the Medal of Honor. It was presented to Barkeley’s mother during a ceremony in San Antonio on Feb. 17, 1919. Johnson also received the high honor for his effort in crossing the Meuse. Barkeley was initially buried in France, but his remains were

returned to the U.S. in 1921. He became the second person to lie in state at the Alamo — the first was Army Maj. Gen. Frederick Funston, who earned the Medal of Honor during the Philippine Insurrection — before being buried at San Antonio National Cemetery. Barkeley’s state made sure to remember him and his sacrifice. In 1921, a San Antonio elementary school was named after him. Twenty years later, as the U.S. military began to prepare for its inevitable entry into World War II, Camp Barkeley near Wichita Falls, Texas, was named in his honor.

‘O to O’ rule of thumb explained Photo by LeManna/Shutterstock.com
by Nicole Alberico U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Forget about pumpkin spiced lattes, this is the time to be thinking about — and possibly be investing in — tires. Whether this will be one’s first or fiftieth winter in Germany, get familiar with “von O bis O” or “from October to Ostern (Easter).” There are no specific dates for the use of winter tires, but according to garrison safety chief Larry Strickland, most German motorists follow the “von O bis O” rule of thumb. He says if you haven’t done so already, now is the time to change your tires for winter. Not only having the correct tires for road conditions is just sound, safe practice but also, it’s the law, according to Strickland. In 2015, German federal law was
amended to require the use of specific tires when conditions are icy. The law “clearly states that under icy conditions [bei Glatteis, Schneeglätte, Schneematsch, Eis- und Reifglätte] you must not drive without snow tires on your vehicle,” said Strickland. “Since it’s difficult to predict the weather, for all practical purposes, the old ‘von O bis O’ rule still applies.” When shopping for tires or when gaining a set from a car purchase, ensure the walls of the tires are marked with at least the M+S symbol. M+S stands for “Matsch und Schnee,”or mud and snow. The same applies to rental cars. If renting during the O to O timeframe, look for the marking. According to Strickland, M+S tires do not have to be winterspecific tires. All-year or allweather tires marked with M+S
also qualify but that will all change in a few years. “Tires with only the old M+S mark will be allowed until September 30, 2024, but the German automobile club recommends getting new tires with the Alpine ‘3-peak-mountain’ mark as soon as possible,” said Strickland. “The new law also applies to trucks and buses.” When shopping for new tires, he recommended looking for both symbols as it may be worth the investment now to be safer on the road and in compliance with the upcoming requirement. Tires marked with the Alpine symbol are manufactured specifically for ice and snow conditions. These are best for road conditions found in RheinlandPfalz, particularly around the Baumholder community where winter hits harder than in the Kaiserslautern area.
“It all comes down to the rubber of the tire and the grip on the road,” said Strickland. He explained, as the tire gets colder, the rubber hardens providing less traction. An all-season tire with the M+S marking may get you through the season but a winter or snow tire is best for traction on icy roads. For folks coming from duty stations such as Alaska and Colorado where studded tires are the norm, Strickland said those should stay in North America. Studded tires are illegal in Germany. Snow chains are the go-to, and mandatory in some conditions, for alpine driving in Europe. The price of snow tires varies widely depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Online may be a good option but be mindful of shipping dates as roads may get icy before the tires arrive.
Violating this law can be costly. If a driver is in an accident or needs assistance after a winter wipe out, the driver could be fined at least 60 euros and potentially have a point added to his or her license, compounding to an already stressful situation. And those fines could add up quickly. “Depending on the state your incident takes place, that can be a single, 60 euro fine or a 600 euro fine for all five tires being out of compliance,” said Strickland. “Don’t forget about that spare.” Six hundred euros. That’s a lot of pumpkin spiced lattes. Stay up-to-date on road conditions for garrisons and sites throughout Europe by going to www.home.army.mil/ rhenland-pfalz, and clicking on “Road Conditions.”

DOD celebrates ‘National Veterans, Military Families Month’ by David Vergun Department of Defense News November is National Veterans and Military Families Month. The Defense Department recognizes that military families have important roles to play in supporting a strong and ready force. “Our nation’s service members do not serve alone. Alongside them are the dedicated members of their families, whose commitment and resolve strengthen our nation. Your support and resilience help strengthen our force,” said C. Eddy Mentzer, acting director of military community support programs. “The department recognizes that readiness depends on a strong and resilient home front, and we honor those who make it possible — our nation’s nearly 3 million military family members,” said Mentzer, whose spouse is an activeduty Air Force colonel. Every military family is unique and could consist of not just immediate family members, but also partners, caregivers, extended family members and friends. “Each one of you is important.” Military life has its own unique challenges and rewards, and the department wants to ensure
family members have support and access to resources they can use, said Mentzer. The entire suite of these resources is available on the Military OneSource website at https://www.militaryonesource.mil. “Military OneSource should be the first stop for any military family when facing adversity,” said Mentzer. “Service members and their families can visit the website, call Military OneSource at 800342-9647 to speak with a Military OneSource consultant, or start a live chat. Our team will listen to your needs and lead you to the resources you need. “Military OneSource is not just for currently serving military families, but also for transitioning service members and their families. They have access to all Military OneSource has to offer up to 365 days post transition.” That website provides helpful information and guidance on topics, such as: • Nurturing and growing friendships and relationships to help maintain important connections. • Navigating parenting and caregiving. • Planning for and working through different transitions in military life.
• Parenting, relationship support and child care help. • Programs for youths. • Spouse employment opportunities. • Permanent change of station and deployment assistance.

Moving tips for your PCS by FindItGuide.com Living in a foreign country can be difficult. You are constantly experiencing new rules, norms and situations you take for granted when you are back in your home country. Moving to and from one can be even more stressful. When families move to their next “station,” easily the toughest part is packing up and getting ready for the move. Even if you are working with a professional moving company, you have a lot to prep for. What should we keep, sell or give away? You may have a weight limit based on your contract or company you are working with, so you may find out you need to lose a lot of that accumulated tourist stuff quickly. We have listed some helpful hints, helping you prepare for your next move! Helpful hints • Check your lease to see if you need to repaint your house or apartment It is common in Germany for a landlord to require you to repaint the interior of the house or apartment before you get your deposit

Check to see the specifics to avoid costly penalties when calculating your deposit. • There is clean and then there is German clean As part of your move, your house or apartment will need to be cleaned. The standard by Photo by LightField Studio/Shutterstock.com which Germans judge cleanliness is quite high and electric appliances you picked up it is likely you will not be able here in Europe. to get your abode to their standard if you do it yourself. • Dog Flight Reservations There are a limited number of spots available for Fido on each flight and reservations fill up quickly. Pets will not be accepted by most airlines when the current or forecasted temperature at the arrival, layover or departure airport is above 84°F (29°C) at any location on the itinerary (limit for snubnosed dogs and snub-nosed cats is 75°F). Source: PetTravel.com During the months of May through September, your airline may not allow you to transport your pet in the cargo department. The reason for this restriction is that the heat on the tarmac can heat up the cargo hold quickly. Additionally, many airlines do not have air-conditioned holding areas for pets. The
risk to your pet is when it is on the ground, not when the aircraft is in the air. Source: PetTravel.com • Check the gas tank before you ship your car Double check with your shipping company to understand the requirement for fuel level to be left in the car upon drop off. There are lots of stories with owners having to run their vehicle all night to drop the fuel level down to the appropriate level for shipping. • Ask your friends for their used boxes It is likely your friends saved a bunch of boxes from their move and have plenty of extra to throw your way • Get a back support belt Since you don’t move every week, your body isn’t ready for this type of exercise. A back support belt can help reduce back pain and severe injury.

by Staff Sgt. Elora J. McCutcheon Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs Nov. 2 marked the Department of the Air Force’s deadline for active duty component Airmen and Guardians to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. As of publication, nearly 97 percent of Airmen and Guardians on active duty have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
“Our Airmen need to be prepared to operate anytime, anywhere in the world,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr. “Getting vaccinated ensures we are a ready force to meet our commitments to the nation while protecting the health of our team and families.” Since the Secretary of Defense’s mandate Aug. 24, the Department of the Air Force set the most aggres-

sive timelines amongst the military services to ensure members are vaccinated. “I am incredibly proud of our Airmen for coming together and getting vaccinated,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne S. Bass. “This is about readiness and ensuring our Air Force can continue to defend the homeland. It’s also about understanding that we are not in the clear yet. Continuing safe practices to protect ourselves and others should always be in our cross-check.” The majority of the active component was vaccinated prior to the Aug. 24 mandate. After the mandate, installation Military
Treatment Facilities rapidly scaled up vaccination efforts in order to meet the Nov. 2 deadline for the remainder of the force. Many MTFs stood up mass vaccination procedures capable of administering thousands of shots a day. “Thank you to our activeduty Guardians and Airmen for moving out quickly to meet the Department’s vaccine timeline,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond. “Although we are encouraged by the falling number of cases, COVID-19 is still a very real threat. We need each and every one of you to be healthy and ready; we need you and your loved ones to be protected so our team
can continue to protect and defend the nation.” Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger A. Towberman echoed DAF senior leadership appreciation for all those who got vaccinated, as well as those who made it possible — to include DAF medical personnel who worked tirelessly to vaccinate nearly 100,000 Airmen and Guardians in just over two months. “This took leadership and teamwork at all levels,” Towberman said. “I’m proud of our Guardians for their commitment to our readiness and each other, and thankful for all our Airmen enablers who made this happen.” Over the next 30 days, DAF will review requests for medical exemptions and religious accommodations. DAF civilians have until Nov. 22 to be fully vaccinated, and Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members in a Reserve component status must be vaccinated by Dec. 2. COVID-19 screening testing will be required at least weekly for all individuals entering a DoD facility who are not fully vaccinated, including those who have an exemption request under review, or who are exempted from COVID-I9 vaccination. Units will be responsible for running self-test programs and can reach out to either the Defense Logistics Agency Contact Center or their servicing MTF for assistance with ordering and purchasing the self-test kits. Additional guidance will be forthcoming through command channels. Sembach Vehicle Registration Virtual Line by Sembach Vehicle Registration Sembach RMV thanks everyone for their patience and understanding throughout the month of October as we worked to stress the system and enable first class service. Please ensure you have all the requirements for your transaction when you arrive (both parties for a transfer, updated insurance, temporary plates that start with a “TM” prefix, etc). In order to maintain quick service please have printed copies of all documents. As a reminder, you don’t have to be out here early in the morning to get in line. Someone standing outside at 5 a.m. has the same odds of someone who wakes up at 7:30 a.m. and logs into the site to get serviced. Take advantage of not having to physically stand outside and enjoy the convenience the system offers. For questions regarding the new virtual line please call DSN: 314-542-2004.

GHOSTS IN CROATIA from Page 1 “Weeeee!” yell the kids from the back seat. It’s not every day Dad gets to show off just how fast he can drive the family car down an abandoned Yugoslavian runway. My husband maxed our Outback out at just over 100mph (161 kph). He would’ve gone faster, the kids wanted him to go 200, but the dog and I were freaking out a bit. 1. Abandoned Air Base On our left, the massive Plješivica mountain range raced by. We could see the scar of deforested land that ran up over the mountains, marking the current border between Croatia and Bosnia. Most of the former Željava Air Base lies on the Croatian side, including our runway-turned-racetrack. The base was secretly built in the 1950’s as central part of communist Yugoslavia’s military defense. It was called Objekat 505 and housed the country’s radar warning system (think NORAD), four squadrons of MiG-21 jets, 110 pilots, and enough supplies to house 1000 people – all underground. 2. Miles of Underground Tunnels and Hangars In the height of the cold war, Zeljava was designed to be impenetrable. It was said to be able to withstand a 20-kiloton nuclear bomb. Now it exists as a creepy ruin with all but a few buildings still standing outside, grass encroaching the runway, and miles of huge dark tunnels of debris. Entering the underground hangar feels apocalyptic. The airplane-shaped entrances are covered in odd stains, while the forest has overgrown and nearly hidden the doors. Inside, the space has a massive arched ceiling and is wide enough for aircraft to taxi. It’s hard to imagine being able to breathe with a squadron of jets taxiing around, but evidence of the air force is all over from the control ‘tower’ high along a wall to the tie-downs still embedded in the floor. 3. Blasted Blast Doors We explored the main entrance as it led deep into the mountainside and a maze of taxiways and rooms. One internal hangar door was still half-closed, but also half shredded and exposing bent rebar. There was debris everywhere: cement blocks in piles the size of a house, the skeletal remains of buildings within the tunnels, and twisted metal. In 1991 and 1992 the Yugoslavian People’s Army and its successor, the Krajina Serbian Army detonated the base so it couldn’t be used by opposing forces. It took over 56 tons of explosives inside the tunnels and loads more on the runways to destroy the place. It has not been used since, except by Croatian K9 units training to find landmines that are still a danger in the area. 4. Airplane Relic On our way out, we passed an old Douglas C-47 sitting along the side of an old gate. It is terrifically tagged and covered with graffiti. The interior has been stripped down, so it was fascinating to explore and see the structure. It looks like a skeleton guarding the secrets within the tunnels of Zeljava Air Base.
