3AF commander sets expectations for 86 AW

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Derek France, Third Air Force commander, recently sat down with 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen to discuss his priorities for the 86th AW, and his impressions of Team Ramstein following a wing immersion Sep. 27.

86th AW/PA: What would you like our Airmen and audience to know about you and your overall vision as the 3rd AF commander?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: First, I want our Airmen to understand the focus areas of the Third Air Force.

Our role in Third Air Force, as far as the higher headquarters for our wing, is to develop Airmen, deliver air power, and defend the Alliance. Every Airman, from the most senior down to the most junior, plays an important role in that.

When we say developing Airmen, it means we are being mentors to each other, we are being good wingmen, we are there for each other, See IMMERSION TOUR, Page 3

21 TSC Commander congratulates new United States citizens

After taking the Oath of Citizenship, 42 Service Members and civilians group together after becoming citizens of the United States during a naturalization ceremony on Sembach Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Sep. 27. The ceremony congratulated and welcomed new citizens of the United States of America.

James Smith, welcomed and gave congratulations to 42 new citizens of the United States of America at a ceremony held at Sembach Kaserne, Kaiserslautern. The new U.S. citizens represented 29 countries of origin and included 17 Service Members.

His remarks are below.

Good afternoon, to our new citizens, friends, families, loved ones, and members of Team 21 that are with us today in person, and virtually. I would be remiss to not first extend my greetings to Ms. Eloris James from the Immigration Services Office who is joining us virtually today to give the oath and her own words of congratulations and encouragement. Welcome to Team 21 and thank you for coming today to recognize such an outstanding group of individuals.

Congratulations!

First, to the 17 Service Members who can now proudly call themselves American citizens. Thank you for what you do. It is essential that we take the time to acknowledge your dedication to service and commitment to our nation despite not having all of the privileges that are afforded to your peers who are United States citizens.

Choosing to serve in the armed

forces of the United States of America is not a decision that anyone takes lightly, especially when some of you may come from other countries with extremely impressive experiences and resumes. So, for your decision to choose to serve this country, thank you.

As a U.S. Service Member, you not only protect the United States and its citizens from direct threats, but you also help maintain peace and stability throughout the world — perhaps even in your country of origin.

Service members born in the Philippines, Mexico, Jamaica, China, and South Korea are the top five countries of birth among naturalized service members since 2017.

The next five countries of birth — Nigeria, Ghana, India, Haiti, and Nepal — comprised an additional 17% of military naturalizations.

Spc. Chanda Devkota, a dental assistant at Landstuhl, is from one of those countries — Nepal. She looks forward to being able to vote and continue to serve.

Spc. Odor Zeff is from Nigeria and sees becoming a U.S. citizen as a way for him to keep helping as many people as possible.

Spc. Nathalie Gustave, a Blackhawk mechanic, is from Haiti.

She looks forward to making a career out of her military service.

Spc. Joycelyn Nicolas is from the Philippines and always dreamed of coming to the U.S. She is passionate about giving back to

the country that welcomed her.

Our Armed Forces are stronger with this diversity among our ranks, and our country benefits from this this diversity among our citizenry.

Since 2002, the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization Services naturalized more than 148,000 members of the U.S. military, both at home and abroad, with ceremonies from right here in Kaiserslautern to more than 30 countries across the globe.

I’m pleased to note that in the last five years, service members from the Army comprised about two-thirds of all military naturalizations. Huah!

To the 25 spouses that are amongst us today as new American citizens, thank you for your continued trust and faith in our military. Your support is what keeps our organization strong, and I am grateful for your decision to continue to support our service members and the ideals of our nation.

In taking this solemn oath to “support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America” you have demonstrated your allegiance to the principals that have made our country great. We are here today to honor and celebrate this important decision in your life.

E pluribus unum is a phrase that appears on the great seal of the United States of America. It is on every American dollar bill and every U.S. coin. E pluribus unum means “out of many, one” and I can think

of no more beautiful example of that than a naturalization ceremony.

Today, we are the real-world example of this phrase — out of the many of us — we are one team. Americans.

When we began this ceremony, you stood as individuals representing 29 countries from Belize to the United Kingdom. You now stand proud, together, as American citizens.

We are a country governed “by the people, for the people,” and we share the collective goal of making our country a “more perfect” union. You are now the “people” and full participants in our collective and continuous efforts to become “more perfect.” These words have served to guide our nation as it has grown, prospered, and become a beacon of hope and opportunity for millions of people around the world.

During the last decade, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services welcomed more than 7.3 million naturalized citizens into our great nation. Immigrants are the clearest evidence of how people have responded to the hope and opportunity that the United States represents.

You will strengthen the fabric of our nation with your contributions to American society and continued prosperity. I am confident that you, as our newest citizens, will continue to add to the strength and character of our nation.

As an American, you will have new opportunities to participate in

our democratic republic — to vote, to serve on a jury, even to work for the Federal government. I hope this day inspires you to take full advantage of your citizenship, and the rights and responsibilities that come along with it.

As you build your lives as Patriots, I encourage you to be active, while giving back to your community and country through civic participation and service.

Whether you contribute by volunteering with a local organization, serving in our Armed Forces, owning a business, running for public office, serving on a jury, or casting your vote on Election Day, you will carry on our nation’s proud heritage.

Each one of you comes from a unique background that has the potential to utilize your skills, strengths and abilities to continue to make our country a beacon of hope. In the words of our Commander-in-Chief, “Thank you for choosing us and believing America is worthy of your aspirations.”

I congratulate each of you on reaching this important milestone.

Your hard work and determination have led you here, and I am honored to be a part of such a tremendous moment in your lives.

Your spirit, and dedication, will uphold America’s tradition of providing hope and opportunity for generations of immigrants to come.

October 7, 2022 IMMERSION TOUR from Page 1 and we treat each other not only as coworkers, but as family. This is important, now more than ever, as we emerge from [Covid-19] and work through some of the challenges that this theater is having.

When we talk about delivering air power, it means making sure we bring innovation to the fight and that we don’t do things the same old way just because that’s the way we’ve always done them. We’re constantly looking to self-improve and see if there are more innovative ways to make that happen.

When we talk about defending the Alliance, it is with the understanding that we don’t do this alone. At the grassroots level up to the strategic level, we’re involved in building partnerships and advancing those partnerships with our NATO Allies, coalition and joint partners so that we are stronger together.

86th AW/PA: What are your goals as the Third Air Force commander?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: As the Third Air Force commander, I am looking to build a cohesive team across Europe and Africa. Partnerships are the main reason we are the capable force that we are right now. That’s really my main goal, that we all come together to get the mission done.

I certainly, see that a great deal within the 86th Airlift Wing. Both with your geographically separated units as well as the support that our C-130J Super Hercules aircraft provide to this theater, the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing and the 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing.

86th AW/PA: With that in mind, what are your expectations of each member of Team Ramstein?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: For Team Ramstein, my expectation is that we are honest and genuine with each other. We are partners in the community, both on and off base, with our German hosts. I expect our Airmen to live within our core values and make sure that we are taking care of the important things. That is tough to do in a high-ops tempo environment.

I am aware we put a lot of demands on our Airmen because of the mission. But, it cannot be at the expense of the fundamental things that enable us to serve in the longterm, and not just in the short-term.

86th AW/PA: After immersing with the 86th Airlift Wing and many of its members, what was your overall impression and what stood out?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: I am absolutely blown away by the quality of Airmen that we have here. Across the board, I have seen nothing but really awesome things coming out of this wing. It starts with the understanding that this wing is the Global Gateway and it has a no-fail mission. From inspiring airpower innovations to behind-the-scenes support for Ukraine, the wing really does stand at the forefront of defense and freedom here.

86th AW/PA: Ramstein Airmen consistently maintain some of the highest operation tempos across the Department of Defense, with suicide awareness month coming to a close, what can we do

moving forward to take care of our subordinates, peers and our own mental health?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: There are a lot of things we can do, but I think it starts with the most basic thing that we can do: listen. It’s a skillset that needs to be practiced. It’s a skillset that has atrophied over time, especially during Covid.

Too often, we are quick to speak and slow to listen, when it should be the other way around. With listening comes understanding, and with understanding comes empathy. With

empathy comes a good wingman that can help us out in times of trouble.

86th AW/PA: Are there any additional topics you would like to discuss?

MAJ. GEN. FRANCE: I am awful proud to be associated with this organization, the 86th Airlift Wing, and to

live on Ramstein. This base is blessed with great leadership, from Brig. Gen. Jones through his subordinate commanders and senior enlisted leaders all the way down to the fantastic individual Airmen I met today. I look forward to meeting more in the next year or two as the Third Air Force commander.

The 2022 recommended holiday season mailing dates for Air Force customers assigned to the European theater are:

Cushioning Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough padding. Place an extra address label with the delivery and return addresses inside the package to ensure it can be delivered in case the outside label becomes damaged or falls off.

• USPS Retail Ground – Nov. 23 • First Class Mail and Priority Mail – Dec. 9 • Priority Mail Express Military Service – Dec. 16 These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the United States. Customers in the United States who mail to European APO/FPO/DPO addresses normally use similar recommended mailing dates.

U.S. Air Forces Europe - Air Forces Africa postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive to intended U.S. destinations in time for the holidays.

Customers can avoid long lines at the post office when they mail early and can take advantage of using the cheaper, although slower, USPS Retail Ground mail service military post offices offer in Europe.

USPS Retail Ground mail service takes longer to arrive at the end destination and moves via ground once it arrives in the states. Customers who want faster service should consider using priority mail or PMEMS if available. This costs more but these classes of mail get preferred and/or expedited service.

Most mail accepted at military post offices in Europe is flown to the United States on commercial aircraft.

Once mail arrives stateside, it’s transported based on the service selected and paid for. Customers should keep in mind, packages transiting through the mail stream are handled numerous times, and therefore proper packaging is very important.

The following USPS mailing tips are provided to help ensure packages arrive safely and undamaged: The box Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents. Sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are best for weights up to 10 pounds. If reusing a box, cover up or mark-out any old labels and markings.

USPS provided boxes Priority Mail Express and Priority Mailboxes are available at no cost

Sealing Tape the box shut and reinforce the seams with 2-inch-wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape.

Liquids (some host country restrictions apply, check with your post office personnel) Nonflammable, nonhazardous liquids are acceptable to mail, if sealed inside a waterproof container. The outer container with the address label should also be strong and securely sealed. Mailers must mark the outer container of a mail piece containing liquid to indicate the nature of the contents and annotate “this side up” on the package.

Packages containing liquids need to be carefully packed to withstand the grueling transportation journey.

Size The weight of each package cannot exceed 70 pounds. For customers planning to use Priority Mail Express or Priority Mail services for faster delivery, length plus girth (girth is the distance around the thickest part of the package) cannot exceed 108 inches. For USPS Retail Ground, the total girth cannot exceed 130 inches.

Packages are also subject to minimum dimensions. No package may be smaller than 5 inches long, 3-1/2 inches high and be at least 0.007 inches thick.

Correct address Using a complete and correct address is critical for timely delivery.

To find the correct spelling of a city name and state abbreviation or to find a ZIP-Code, visit www.usps.com.

Print or type the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the package. Type or print clearly with a pen or permanent marker so that the address is legible from an arm’s length away.

Return address Print or type the address in the upper left corner on the same side of the package as the delivery address.

USPS extra services Extra services can provide additional protection and peace of mind.

• Adult Signature - Requires the signature of someone 21 years of age or older at the recipient’s address.

• Certificate of Mailing Provides evidence of mailing.

• Certified Mail - Provides proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery.

• Insured Mail - Provides coverage against loss or damage up to $5,000. Fee based on value of item. »» USPS Priority Mail service includes up to $100 of insurance with most shipments (restrictions apply) »» USPS Priority Mail Express service includes up to $100 of insurance with most shipments (restriction apply) • Registered Mail (service not available at all locations) Provides maximum security.

Includes proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery.

Insurance can be added up to $50,000. Fee based on value of item.

• USPS Tracking - Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Free with select services.

• Signature Confirmation Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery and the name of the person who signed for the item. Customers can request a printed copy of the signature.

• Return Receipt - Provides a postcard or electronic notification with the date of delivery and recipient signature.

• Restricted Delivery - Confirms that only a specified person, or authorized agent, will receive a piece of mail.

Customs declaration form All mail originating outside of the United States is subject to customs examination. Mailers are responsible for accurately completing USPS customs forms when mailing packages containing dutiable goods to the United States.

Mailers are also required to certify the information provided is correct and the items do not contain any dangerous article, or articles prohibited by legislation or by postal or customs regulations. The sender’s failure to complete the form prop-

In August 2020, the USPS phased out the green and white customs declaration forms that most patrons were accustomed to when mailing. This change of policy derived from the Global Trade Compliance requirements instituted back in 2015 that resulted in changes to processing and dispatching of all DOD military mail services overseas. To alleviate GTC holds and your package being Return to Sender, customers need to be very descriptive when listing items on the customs form. Below are the typical “vague descriptions” and prohibited non-mailable items identified

by U.S. Postal Inspection Service that will trigger GTC holds or RTS action.

This list is not all-inclusive: Vague descriptions: • Electronics • Gifts • Household Goods • Medicine • Merchandise • Sporting Goods/Camping Equipment • Toys • Sample(s) Prohibited, non-mailable Items: • Cigarettes; including loose – selfrolling tobacco • Hand Sanitizer • Alcoholic Beverages • Vape Products: All Items • Chewing Tobacco Other: • Perfume and Cologne are mailable only with Zero alcohol content (must indicate on Customs Form). Items containing alcohol are non-mailable.

• Packages or parcels containing pre-owned electronic devices with lithium batteries are mailable. Restricted to USPS Retail ground only and this service is not available at all Military Postal Offices, contact your local installation post office for additional information.

Customers can avoid waiting in line longer at post office finance

windows if they complete an online customs declaration form using the USPS website prior to presenting packages for mailing at the APO. In addition, some post offices will make available or offer a separate, expedited mail acceptance window as an incentive for customers who arrive at the post office with online, pre-printed USPS electronic customs declarations forms.

Customers have several options available to them when completing required electronic customs declarations using the USPS.com website: Option 1: Customers can choose the USPS Click-N-Ship feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards.

Option 2: Customers can print a customs declaration at home on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing.

However, the accepting finance mail clerk must enter the information from the PS Form 2976R into the Customs Border Protection Manifest system via the USPS Point of Sale retail terminal with the customer present, as clarifying questions may be required to ensure that PS Form 2976-R contains accurate and complete data to complete the mailing transaction. This will result in longer customer waiting times and longer lines at the post office finance windows.

435 AGOW provides ATC familiarization to Ukrainian military Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Edgar Grimaldo 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing provided advanced air traffic control familiarization training to Ukrainian military members at Ramstein Air Base, Sep. 9-15.

The training marked the second time this group of Ukrainians visited Ramstein in pursuit of developing their knowledge of ATC concepts. The previous iteration of training in July 2021, provided Ukrainian members with basic fundamentals while this training focused on contingency operations, and landing zone and safety officer fundamentals.

“This time around, we are looking at the tactical level and focused more on the contingency aspect,” said Master Sgt. Michael Jaeger, 435th Contingency Response Support Squadron air traffic control air advisor. “They will not be conducting air traffic control duties at a facility like the one at Ramstein, instead, in an austere environment.”

Airmen from the 603rd Air Operations Center briefed Ukrainian military members on airspace considerations used by the U.S. Air Force to effectively deliver aircraft, assets and supplies to allies and partners.

“The first time we had to speak through a Ukrainian interpreter, ‘breaking the ice’ for conversation was rough. This time, conversation flowed more fluently, and we received questions regarding not only the topics being discussed but additional topics as well,” Jaeger said.

Ramstein has served as the global gateway for decades, provid-

ing support to Ukraine is no exception. After a week of training, the Ukrainians are returning home, however the 435th AGOW mission to build and sustain partnerships will continue.

“It was a rewarding feeling having five Ukrainian officers show up to Ramstein for training,” Wall said. “We offer this training to any allied and partner nations to help bolster partner capacity and strengthen regional relationships.”

The Moselle and Saar valleys, both in Rheinland-Pfalz, along with Rheinhessen in the north has the largest viticulture area in Germany and makes up about twothirds of the German winegrowing regions. Most of the vineyards are on or very close to the 50th latitude, which is rather unusual in international comparison. High quality and successful viticulture is only possible based on a special unique meso and micro climate condition.

The “Deutsche Weinstrasse” (German wine road) stretches 85 kilometers from Rheinhessen in the north to the French Alsace region in the southwest and ends at Deutsches Weintor (wine gate).

Many famous towns such as Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt and Landau lie along the way and the region is renowned for vineyards as far as the eye can see on flat plains in close proximity to the Rhine River.

The special mild climate zone provides 1.800 hours of sun a year.

Another famous viticulture region is along the Moselle and Saar rivers, but on steep slopes with up to 60 percent inclines.

Approximately 60 million vines grow along the steep hills where the winding rivers reflect sunlight onto the slopes and warm the vines to ripen to a plentiful harvest.

river almost 3000 years ago. The Romans refined the winemaking process, improved the quality and eventually introduced darker red grapes. As wine consumption of the Romans grew along with the empire throughout the centuries, soldiers and civil servants were paid with wine, rather than coins, and even slaves received a daily ration. This quickly led to the tasty liquid evolving into a well-traded and precious commodity.

About 9.250 million hectoliters (2.440.500 gallons) of wine are produced annually in Germany and approximately 257.000 hectoliters (668.200 gallons) alone are exported to the United States.

September marks the beginning of the harvest season. Large state-of-the art grape harvesters can pick the grapes on even surfaces. The machines are able to pull the actual grape fruits off the small twigs and leaves by shaking and rattling them before they are conveyed to a large container. However, the vineyards on the steep slopes of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers have to be picked by hand, a very tedious and backaching task, with thousands of harvesters working with century old techniques.

Grapes are stomped by foot in a traditional method during the Kelterfest in Piesport along the Moselle River. Former wine queen Martina Servaty even stomped herself into the Guinness Book of World Records when she pressed 12.76 liters (3.3 gallons) of juice out of a barrel with 50 kilograms

(110 pounds) of grapes.

After the initial grape pressing process, also known as keltering, the premier wine produced is called “Federweisser” (feather white) because of its milky, white color. Although very sweet in taste, it also has a high alcohol content and is often sold in containers in little booths along the road side.

A tradition that comes with the season is delicious and spicy “Zwiebelkuchen” (onion cake) together with the semi-processed wine. The warm dish, more of a quiche than a typical cake, with onions and bacon bits, is a perfect complement to the fizzy new wine. Freshly pressed, pure and sweet grape juice is also a perfect alternative for those that prefer a non-alcoholic delight.

After the first winter frost in late November or early December, the very last grapes are handpicked and processed into a sweet, rare and expensive “Eiswein” (ice wine).

Wine festivals take place in almost every village throughout the season and Neustadt/Weinstrasse is the host of the German Weinlese Fest (wine harvest fest) with a parade and a wine village set up with wooden booths to celebrate the harvest season. The German Weinkönigin (wine queen), required to have a broad knowledge of the different types of grapes and wines and their making, is crowned for a year. Bad Dürkheim has the world’s largest wine fest and Landau holds the “Fest des Federweissen” (Federweisser festival), both in October.

Take a walk on the wild side

by Gina Hutchins-Inman 86 Airlift Wing Public Affairs Wildpark Betzenberg offers great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and see a variety of flora and fauna in the local area.

Located in east Kaiserslautern, behind Kleber Kaserne and across from Gasthaus Quack, it is home to the Palatinate forest and many species of animals such as wild horses.

The park spans 25 hectares, and the large premises are inhabited by many different animals, including aurochs and wild horses, called tarpans.

Does, fawns and bucks graze in grassy enclosures. Wild boar and piglets splash in the mud, while goats and their kids play chase.

Wisents, the European bison and an endangered species, are cautiously kept in a separate corral and the fluffy calves may curiously walk up to the fence.

A 1.5 km long water pipeline was installed, and covered feeding sheds also serve as protection against wind and rain. The wild boar enclosure has a muddy area where animals like to dig and roll around. A large grassy area with trees is provided for deer and goats. Fir trees offer a natural roof for the grazing animals and observing visitors.

A wet biotope was created within the wisent enclosure where frogs and lurches feel at home, while also offering toads a place to spawn.

Guests may also be able to see a rare lynx with its pointed ears

peeking out of its den. Lynxes are the largest wild cats in Europe.

They were formerly hunted for their beautiful thick fur, and they can reach a length of up to 1.2 meters (47 inches).

The park is a wonderful place to enjoy a walk during Germany’s colorful fall when the leaves of the up to 120 year old oaks and beeches turn golden brown, red and yellow. This year’s highlight is a set of young aurochs twins, a rare phenomenon in nature.

Admission is free and parking is available nearby. Visitors are advised that due to uneven inclines and natural, unpaved forest paths, mobility for handicapped individuals is rather limited and appropriate footwear is recommended. Dogs are allowed if leashed at all times.

“Spartan Warrior is a massive command and control simulation exercise,” said U.S. Air Force Capt.

“Spartan Warrior gives us the unique opportunity to hit on mission sets that are tough to recreate, like SCAR, because it takes a lot of instructors and planning,” said Capt.

Wesley Wagner, 178th Operations Support Squadron, chief of training.

“Whereas here, it’s done by exercise controllers or NATO partners, so it gives you that realistic aspect.”

The USAFE-AFAFRICA Warfare Center’s mission is to support training for joint Allies and partner-nation warfighters at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels using diverse modeling and simulation networks.

The Warfare Center is a multifaceted organization that enhances warfighter readiness across the European theater.

Spartan Warrior 22-9 gives Allies the venue to compete against simulated threat environments they could see in the opening phase of conflicts, ensuring NATO Allies are ready and prepared for any environment and scenario.

Speaking about nuclear threats Brown said: “We want to make sure we have a safe, secure, reliable nuclear deterrent.”

Brown also mentioned modernization of the B-52 bombers to the newer B-21s and the Minuteman 3 missiles.

“We are on a path to modernize the Air Force not only across the conventional air force, but also nuclear force, as well,” he said.

“The rate of technological advancements today is astounding, and produces emerging threats and requirements rapidly,” Sutherland said. “As the world’s preeminent air power, we make great strides to update and upgrade airframes and other operational technologies, so it only makes sense to modernize the equipment used by those that defend them.”

Part of that modernization includes listening to and implementing, where possible, feedback from security forces Airmen across the enterprise.

“Feedback from the field is critical and is actually the reason that some of the characteristics for the 2.0 helmet were developed,” Sutherland said. “No amount of testing or technical evaluations will cover everything because at the end of the day, only Defenders know what Defenders need.”

“The field has multiple avenues of approach from surveys, direct visits to installations and open lines of communication like quarterly teleconferences and emails,” said Master Sgt. Raymond Santiago, AFSFC’s security forces individual equipment manager.

The AFSFC’s S-4 Individual Equipment section is a customer service entity and relies on the enterprise to provide feedback and submit issues, Santiago added.

“We can’t grow, if we don’t know,” he said.

The Air Force Security Forces Center is rolling out the NextGen 2.0 helmet later this year with several improvements to include bolton accessory rails and night vision goggle mount, a chinstrap extender for gas mask use and more accessory mounting options. The effort is part of the center's "replace through attrition program" that builds on the functionality of the NextGen 1.0 helmet released in 2020.

Security forces Airmen at installations across the Department of the Air Force are set to don the Security Forces NextGen Helmet 2.0 later this year.

Following a recent contract award by the Air Force Security Forces Center, Helmet 2.0 includes the ability to mount a wider variety of accessories, features bolt-on accessory rails and a night vision goggle mount that’s easy to adjust or replace, and a chinstrap extender for gas masks.

The 2.0 effort is part of AFSFC’s “replacement through attrition program,” and builds on the functionality of the SF NextGen 1.0 helmet released in 2020, said Master Sgt. John Sutherland, individual protective equipment program manager at the center.

“The best way to get feedback from the field is by putting our equipment through real-life practical scenarios that a Defender might face in every part of their career from year one all the way through retirement,” said Tech. Sgt. Travis Hillard, Defender instructor supervisor with the 343rd Training Squadron’s Security Forces Apprentice course in San Antonio.

Hillard, other instructors and students were instrumental in testing functionality before AFSFC gave the modified helmet the thumbs-up.

The Airmen put the helmets through “rigorous testing” conducted during field training which included mounted and dismounted operations, low crawl/high crawl and a variety of other air base defense training objectives, Sutherland said.

“These helmets were soaked in sweat and caked in sand, and after hours of use, each tester was fitted with a gas mask and jacket to ensure compatibility with the helmet,” he added.

Participants also completed an extensive survey on the equipment and its functionality.

The NextGen helmet program is just one part of the greater AFSFC’s individual protective equipment effort to standardize and modernize security forces equipment across the Air and Space Forces.

“Helmet 2.0 is only one aspect of the initiative,” Sutherland said. “The Modular Scalable Vest and Female Body Armor … Model Defender which will provide equipment such as pouches, holsters, duty belts and more for

each and every member. These efforts ensure that Defenders can expect technologically relevant and high-quality gear no matter where they are performing their mission.”

“The need to innovate gear is important for the protection of our Airmen and Guardians,” Santiago said.

Hilliard echoed those sentiments.

“It’s incredibly important to constantly update our equipment to meet both modern threats, and to best utilize the constantly upgrading technology available to security forces protecting installations around the globe,” he said.

Consistently rolling out new and updated equipment across the enterprise “helps create the elite weapon systems Defenders need to be in the

modern operating environment.”

“Threats are increasing and evolving so it’s critical our team provides the enterprise with the latest technology to ensure mission capabilities aren’t hindered and our greatest of asset are protected,” Santiago said. “At AFSFC, we continue to collect feedback and upgrade Defender gear to defeat or deter any enemies that threaten our installations.”

“Helmet 2.0 is a big win for security forces but it only plays a part in bigger things to come for our Defenders,” he said. “We’ll continue these efforts with an agile approach while keeping an eye on emerging requirements and new technologies.”

“In five years’ time, we may be fielding IPE solutions that we’ve only seen in science fiction a few years ago.”

Spc. Matthew Crawford was recognized for his extensive knowledge on law enforcement and eager work ethic Aug. 22.

“I have a will to learn my job and become as proficient as possible, and I help out whenever it’s needed,” said Crawford. “I also volunteer to work any detail that becomes available.”

Crawford, a Lima, Ohio, native has been serving the U.S. Army for five years. His past positions include being a gunner, driver, armorer and Military Police investigator.

“I wanted to work a fulfilling career that would give me great life experiences and opportuni-

ties to travel. I also have family members that have served in the past and they had great stories from when they served. “That also made me want to join and make memories and have my own stories to pass on,” added Crawford.

Crawford filled the officer role for DES and attained the Commandant’s list during the Basic Leader’s Course graduation.

In receiving the award, Crawford lauded those who are close to him.

“I would like to thank family for always being there for me. I would like to thank my unit for giving me the opportunities to help me succeed in my career. I would like to thank the Military Police Investigation Section that I work in for providing me with guidance and motivation to put my best foot forward every day.”

LRMC Troops remain steadfast to care following 75-mile march Story and photo by Marcy Sanchez Landstuhl Regional Medical Center

Picture marching from the most eastern point of Rhode Island to the most western point and back, in three days. Now imagine carrying a 22-pound rucksack while doing this.

Now conjure up immediately going back to work following the trek.

The hypothetical scenario became a reality when U.S. Army Service Members from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center participated in the annual De 4Daagse (International Four Day Marches Nijmegen), the largest multi-day marching event in the world, this summer.

Since 1947, U.S. Armed Forces personnel have participated in the event, commonly referred to as Nijmegen after the host city in the Netherlands, which challenges civilian and military participants to trek 30, 40 or 50 kilometers a day for four days. Military participants are further challenged to carry a 10-kilogram load throughout the march.

LRMC Airmen and Soldiers participate each year, however this year’s event challenged the troops both on and off the march as record-breaking heat waves scorched Europe, ensuing a cancelled first day of marching.

Close call “It was a crazy experience,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Tiffany Winston, a physician at LRMC’s Emergency Department. “It’s kind of like giving birth, you forget the pain and then you’re like I won’t do it again but then say you’d do it again.”

Winston, a mother of three and seven months pregnant at the time of the march, spent months training for the march. However, it was her medical training which made an impact following the first day of marching.

“Other event participants knew we were medical staff and they asked if we could see one of their team members,” recalls Winston, a Dallas native. “We had just finished the ruck within the last hour and had just returned to our tent, so I was (recovering) as well. The individual came over to me complaining of leg pain and was concerned of shin splints.”

Following an impromptu assessment, Winston determined the possible

shin splints were far more serious, requiring immediate attention.

“I felt the leg and discussed their medical history. The lateral part of her leg was really tight, a sign of compartment syndrome,” explained Winston.

Compartment syndrome, a painful swelling or bleeding of muscle tissue usually in the legs, can lead to permanent damage, even amputation if not treated in time.

“There was like a long line to the official medical station, that’s why they stopped by our tent first,” said Winston. “(The individual) wanted to kind of push through it and march the next day. I recommended for them to be evaluated at the official aid station, where they were later evacuated to the local university hospital for surgery.”

The individual, a U.S. Service Member, underwent a fasciotomy with follow up surgery at LRMC soon after.

Despite marching for two, Winston finished the march with her 32 fellow LRMC marchers from Army, Air Force, U.S. Army Reserve and Veterans. Her keen observation and obligation to patient care, despite marching 25 miles on that first day, possibly preserving another Service Member’s wellbeing.

In sixth grade, Winston became interested in medicine to help people. Growing up, she was involved in healthcare programs at school and in her community, visiting the local medical school on Saturday mornings to experience the health care environment.

“I was attracted to the emergency department because there’s a lot of variety, it’s been great,” said Winston, who is part of the Ground Surgical Team with the 86th Medical Group out of Ramstein Air Base.

Although marching in her third trimester challenged Winston, she states she couldn’t let the opportunity to participate in Nijmegen, which had been cancelled the last two years due to COVID-19, pass her by.

Fatigued formation “I’ve always had an interest in rucking. I did the Bataan Death March last year where I knocked out the full marathon length,” said 1st Lt. Kelsey Lisitsyn, an Emergency Department nurse at LRMC. “(Nijmegen) was a pretty surreal experience.”

On the second day of marching, approximately totaling 50 miles at that point, the cohort had retreated to their quarters where they recovered and were passing time playing a game of cards when a sudden thump and call for help disrupted the game.

“All of that excess heat was still going on, it was raining but still like 90 degrees Fahrenheit,” explained Lisitsyn, a native of National Park, New Jersey.

“All of a sudden we hear something slam on the ground and I hear somebody scream ‘medic.’ We got up and saw someone had collapsed right outside our tent. My first thought was, the individual looks pretty pale and diaphoretic, so I lifted their legs. As soon as I did that blood went straight to his head and he came right back around.”

Following the initial response, the individual’s colleague mentioned they hadn’t ate much following the ruck march, indicating a possible case of low blood sugar.

“One of the nurses with me grabbed some gummies and started heaving them down their throat,” recalls Lisitsyn. “It completely woke them, and we just kept trying to get sugar levels back up. We had brought a bunch of medical supplies to treat blisters and stuff like that and had plenty of (intravenous) saline bags, so I offered them one but just before administering it, the even medics came into the tent with a defibrillator.”

Following the arrival of the event medics, the individual was escorted to the event aid station where they were later allowed to return.

“I ended up seeing them on the final day as we were getting ready to finish and I like looked over at

them and they remembered me too,” said Lisitsyn. “As we’re walking with another unit, (the individual) praised (LRMC staff) and told the other unit you guys are in good hands.”

Lisitsyn’s intricate journey into medicine exemplifies her yearning to help others. Before finding her calling as an emergency department nurse, Lisitsyn was first seeking a degree in physical therapy, followed by the possibility of becoming a physician, before joining the Army as a mortuary affairs specialist and later commissioning as an Army nurse.

“My mom always told me not to become a nurse,” said Lisitsyn, whose mother is a Licensed Practical Nurse.

“I did the exact opposite what she told me, and I’ve loved it ever since. You just never know what’s going to pop up (in patient cases) and that’s kind of the beauty of it.”

Lisitsyn’s love for medicine was evident in her actions which facilitated a fellow Service Member’s completion of Nijmegen.

“No matter where you’re at, in a deployment setting or even out having fun, something might happen at any time. It’s nice to be ready and on your toes.”

Critical conditions “It was rough, I didn’t think I could take another step but somehow I finished it,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. China Rosales of her first Nijmegen experience. “It was maybe one of the hardest things I’ve had to do but the whole experience was pretty rewarding at the end.”

Following the three-day trek covering 75 miles, Rosales, a medical surgical technician at LRMC’s Medical-Surgical Ward and native of Hutchinson, Kansas, was eager to return to Camp Heumensoord, where military personnel were boarded during the march, but the ride back would present one more challenge as dozens of other finishers were packed into transportation back.

“It was the last day, everyone had just rucked like over 80 miles and we were all literally jam-packed, as many could fit on onto buses,” explains

Rosales. “I got into one of the buses and I was sitting near the front, about 10 minutes into our drive I heard people shouting in the back.”

The cries of distress indicated a problem, which sprung Rosales to her feet, leading her to the commotion where she found two unconscious foreign military members.

“I did not think my feet were capable of even getting up to help but the second I heard that someone was in need I was able to forget about my pain and more worried about helping the person,” said Rosales. “After assessing the individuals, I realized it was heat exhaustion. It was like the scariest feeling for me was knowing there were two people on the bus with a medical emergency and I was the only medic there.”

Fortunately for Rosales, U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ivett Mallaupoma, an operating room technician at LRMC, was also on the same bus and able to assist with directions from Rosales. “(Mallaupoma) had enough background to assist while I was jumping back between the two. We were able to stop the bus so that way we could go under cover and take of some heavy clothing to help cool off,” said Rosales.

“We were able to elevate his feet, give him some electrolytes and basically cool him off until we could get a higher level of care for him.”

Fearing the patient would turn for the worst, Rosales improvised and used the patient’s own smartwatch to monitor heart rate. After stabilizing the first patient, Rosales moved to the second patient whose colleagues didn’t speak fluent English. Having to translate through the patient’s friend, Rosales determined the patient was also dehydrated.

“We were able to get them both stable enough to take to the hospital once the ambulance came,” said Rosales.

“Interestingly, on the bright side was my pain (from marching) was gone. I didn’t feel any of it afterwards because of the adrenaline.”

By the time Rosales arrived at the camp, the endorphins had faded, and she could barely walk to her cot.

“This crazy thing had just happened but required me to walk to go tell people, so I just laid in bed and elevated my feet,” recalls Rosales.

Her humble response is typical for Rosales, whose interest in medicine started in her youth with a desire to help chronic illness in family members.

“I hated the fact that I didn’t know what was really happening with their medical care or I couldn’t help out in any way,” said Rosales, who is currently completing an undergraduate degree. “I’m actually planning on a career in medical administration so I can still impact patients, their health and how they receive it.”

Survivor Outreach Services extends open arms to surviving families

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Commander Col. Reid Furman addressed the surviving Families of fallen Soldiers and recognized Goldstar Mother, Mary Aguirre-Garza, along with survivors Thomas Bailey, Samantha Brokaw and children, Brigitte Cook, Tanja Lanier and Eleanor Prohaska.

In addition to the event, Survivor Outreach Services — an army wide program established in 2008 — provides long-term support to surviving Families of fallen Soldiers. “After a loved one dies, many grieving survivors are not able to process or remember all the information that is given to them in regards to their benefits and the countless tasks they need to do,” said Kerri Schmitt, Survivor Outreach Services coordinator. “SOS is considered long-term support because we continue to be a part of their lives,” she added.

Monthly support meetings held on the second Friday of every month, referral services, financial counseling and benefit coordination are all part of the resources Survivor Outreach provides.

“We believe it is important to connect survivors in our community so they can help each other in their various stages of grief. Walking this road alone is a very lonely process and can significantly impact the sur-

vivor’s mental health,” said Schmitt.

Survivor Outreach Service is located near the survivor’s residence in order to continue to have the support that is needed. Should the survivor relocate, it is the SOS coordinator’s duty to contact the nearest SOS closest to the survivor’s new residence to ensure a smooth transition and continued service.

“Having that reassurance that someone is there for you when you are grieving is priceless. SOS and Casualty Affairs work hand in hand to ensure that the fallen Soldiers surviving family members are taken care of. We try to eliminate any unneeded stressors, so the surviving family members can focus on healing,” added Schmitt.

Visiting several times since, the precious town looks like it stepped out of “Beauty and the Beast.” The information center, located right off the main square, makes it very easy to find an English map and find yourself around.

Every Thursday from 8 a.m to noon on the main square in Obernai, there is an amazing farmer’s and flea market and it goes on from street to street to street. You will find the freshest of meats, cheese, tea, herbs, fish, clothes, shoes, linens, and an occasional mattress stand. It’s random, but don’t knock it! Someone may need a mattress.

Whether you give a try to Les Petites Casseroles, a unique restaurant where your dish is served in small casserole dishes and the combination are mouthwatering with cheese, bacon and pasta, or the Winston Restaurant Le Freiburg, you will not be disappointed.

Rosheim In the medieval town of Rosheim, be sure to see the double Roman walls and the Church of Saints Peter and Paul. This awe-inspiring cathedral is the anchor for this town and covers a few city blocks.

play in the church. Built in the 12th Century and surviving the French Revolution, this church is considered the gem of churches in the Alsace. After touring the church, we popped in at the bakery across the street.

Soufflenheim Known for its ceramic pottery, Soufflenheim is the “Land of the Haguenau Forest and Land of Potters.” This town is also known for its active tourism, hiking, biking and especially golfing.

Soufflenheim is also famous for hosting an annual Festival of Pottery, which features local potters, workshops, music and French culinary specialties prepared on-site.

Getting there Visiting all three villages can often be done as a day trip.

A drive to Obernai is under 2 hours southwest of Stuttgart, just over 2 hours south of Kaiserslautern and approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes south of Wiesbaden. You can also check the DB Bahn website for train information.
