Ramstein Airmen conduct SERE training in Romania Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs BOLOVANI, Romania — Downed pilots navigate through dense woods swatting away spiderwebs as they make their way to a safe location. With a compass and some training, they emerge from the timber to find themselves in an open field of tall yellow grass. The team works together to contact fellow Airmen piloting C-130Js in the area in hopes to be found from the sky. Survival, Evasion, Rescue, and Escape specialists conducted training with 37th Airlift Squadron and Romanian air force pilots during Carpathian Summer 2018, a bilateral training exercise designed to enhance interoperability and readiness of forces by conducting com-

bined air operations with the Romanian air force. “Our purpose today is to work interoperable training with the Romanian rescue forces,” said Senior Master Sgt. Matthew Canoy, U.S. Air Forces in Europe Air Forces Africa SERE functional manager. “We put survivors on the ground, they communicate with their wingmen, and then they pass the information to the Romanians to get rescued.” As the pilots rummage through their gear, they pull out a three-inch by five-inch mirror and a radio. As a facepainted pilot dials in a frequency to make communications, another takes the mirror and makes her way out to the field, the only spot within a two kilometer radius beaming with sunlight. Marlow and her fellow pilots had to navigate through woods and foliage before contacting Romanian air force pilots to “rescue” them. The training was part of Carpathian Summer 2018, a bilateral training exercise designed to enhance interoperability and readiness of forces by conducting combined air operations with the Romanian air force.

AFMS History: Air Force dentists responded to 1981 explosion at Ramstein Air Base by Kevin M. Hymel Air Force Medical Service History Office Two bombs exploded in a parking lot outside the U.S. Air Forces in Europe headquarters building at Ramstein Air Base, Aug. 31, 1981, injuring 15 people. When they heard the blasts, Air Force dentists and their staff ran out to help. The bombs, placed in cars by anti-American terrorist group, the Red Army, deto-

nated early in the morning, shattering windows, starting fires, and damaging partitions, interior walls, equipment, and furniture in the headquarters. One blast blew a car hood over a five-story building. Within seconds, two dental officers and four enlisted staff rushed to the site from the dental clinic located across the street from the blast. While one officer searched the parkSee AFMS HISTORY, Page 6

Page 2 SERE TRAINING from Page 1 The sweat beads up on their faces as they listen to the SERE experts provide instructions. “When they fly over us, you’re going to want to aim that mirror right at their cockpit,” said Canoy. In the distance, the faint sound of propellers ripping away at the sky faded in and out. “They’re getting close, but they keep flying away from us,” said one pilot to another. The pilots then made contact with their wingmen overhead using the radio and gave them a heading. Roaring engines echoed through the trees as the aircraft approached their location. The C-130J soared over them as they aimed the beam of light reflected off the mirror into their windows, hoping to be spotted. After a few passes, the pilots overhead confirmed visuals with the crew on the ground and gave them a set of coordinates to proceed to next. After traversing another

two-kilometer thicket, the pilots reached a rendezvous point where they called in Romanian helicopter pilots for their rescue. “The helicopter doesn’t have a visual of their location,” said Staff Sgt. Christian Martin, 86th Operations Support Squadron SERE specialist. “They know roughly where they’re at and they’re doing a search pattern to identify where our isolated personnel are, but by using vectoring techniques, the aircrew are able to take the sound that they hear from the helicopter, use a heading to get them a visual of the helicopter, and then guide them in using left and right turns.” Minutes pass and just above the treeline, a helicopter rises like the sun. “We have a visual,” relayed the downed pilots to the Romanian helicopters. “Turn 90 degrees to your right.” Each aircrew member took turns giving the helicopter pilots directions to their exact location. The choppers then landed, and the crew was “saved.”

U.S. Air Force Capt. Jane Marlow, 37th AS pilot, said the training was incredibly valuable. “It provided an awesome refresher on survival and evasion, while allowing us to do some things like helicopter vectoring and fixed wing rescue that simply aren’t available at Ramstein,” she said. Marlow spoke on the importance of the training and how it is essential for aircrew members. “For those of us on the ground, the lessons learned in SERE may be the thing that saves your crew one day, should the worst ever happen,” said Marlow. “For the C-130Js in the exercise, it gave the crews the opportunity to train as on-scene commanders. The OSC role is absolutely vital to the rescue missions the 37th may be called upon to execute. The chance to run the scenario and train with an actual isolated person on the ground was awesome. The realism it brought to the search, coordination, and rescue portion of the training allowed the

September 7, 2018 crews to really understand some of the challenges they would face in a true personnel recovery scenario.” The multinational rescue operation improved cohesion between allied forces, according to Marlow, which is necessary due to the possibility of real-life situations as reflected in the training. “Working search and rescue with the Romanians was an incredible opportunity,”

she added. “It provided us the opportunity to simulate a realistic multinational rescue operation. In a true personnel recovery scenario, one of our allies may be the first to respond to a distress call. Sharing tactics, techniques, and procedures in exercises like this provides the opportunity to ensure we and our allies are primed to respond quickly and effectively when rescue is needed.”

Measles outbreak in Europe continues Army Medicine officials urge vaccination by Ashley Patoka Regional Health Command Europe Adults and children not vaccinated for measles could be at risk for contracting the illness as a result of an ongoing measles outbreak in several European countries. Regional Health Command Europe officials recommend families review their vaccination records to ensure everyone is fully vaccinated against the disease. Additionally, in 2017, Army Medicine clinics throughout Europe began giving the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine as part of the routine 6-month visit with their pediatrician. The vaccine is highly encouraged for all children aged 6-12 months, especially those in day care. This dose is in

addition to the two doses given to children in the U.S. over 12 months of age. Measles is an extremely contagious virus, with essentially 100 percent of exposed susceptible individuals becoming infected. The virus can linger in the air of a room or transportation vehicle for up to two hours according to Col. Rodney Coldren, Public Health Command Europe Preventive Medicine Chief. “However, there is a very safe and effective vaccine available to prevent this disease,” Coldren continued. “The vast majority of Americans are already immunized against measles, having received at least two doses of the MMR vaccine in early childhood.” Measles can be a very

Read your newspaper online: www.kaiserslauternamerican.com

serious, even fatal, illness and is especially severe in babies and elderly persons, according to Coldren. “Measles has been largely eliminated in the United States, with the exception of small, localized outbreaks, so the MMR vaccine isn’t normally administered until 12 months of age,” said Coldren. “However, this leaves infants 6 to 12 months old at risk in areas where the virus is present, because the immunity that was passed on to them from their mothers is generally not effective beyond six months.” For more information on protecting your infant with an early dose of measles vaccine, or assistance reviewing family members’ immunization status, please contact your Primary Care team.

Two groups of people in the American military community are particularly vulnerable to measles infection: 1. Family members who were not subject to the U.S. immunization schedule as children, for example, foreign-born spouses. To help protect your family when traveling around Europe, we recommend that you review your vaccination records to ensure that everyone is fully vaccinated against measles. 2. Children under one year old traveling to high-risk areas. Children under one are too young to receive the first regularly sched-

uled measles vaccine. This is a concern if they are travelling to an area affected by a measles outbreak. In such cases, U.S. authorities allow for the early administration of measles vaccine to provide protection until the regular measles series can be started at 12 months of age. This early dose can be given as early as six months. However, this early dose is additional and does not replace the first shot in the normal immunization schedule.

Stronger together: AF senior leaders implement plan to strengthen joint leaders, teams Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs WASHINGTON — In accordance with Air Force senior leaders’ Strengthening Joint Leaders and Teams Implementation Plan, the Air Force is refining and strengthening how Airmen are developed to integrate into and lead joint teams. “Over the last year, we conducted robust analysis to identify ways to strengthen our joint warfighting excellence while remaining functionally proficient in Air Force core functions,” Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson, Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright said in a letter to Air Force commanders dated July 23, 2018. “While today’s Air Force is the most lethal and ready in the world, to maintain our competitive lead we must strengthen our

ability to operate in an increasingly complex, multi-domain, joint environment.” Current efforts will fall under two main lines of effort — strengthening joint leaders and enhancing joint teams. Strengthening Joint Leader Development Air Education and Training Command is working to redesign the Air Force Continuum of Learning to include joint matters across an Airman’s career lifecycle, and ensure the service integrates the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities as an essential component of total force development. The Air Force’s Personnel Center and AF/A1 will work with AETC and the redesigned CoL to include an institutional framework that balances Air Force and joint progression. Joint learning will include purposeful follow-on and

practical assignments so Airmen have the expertise to plan, execute and lead joint operations. To aid in this effort, the Air Force will begin tracking and reporting joint education and experience to obtain a holistic look at the levels and diversity of joint, interagency, intergovernmental and multinational experience within our total force at any given time. “The goal is to capture an Airman’s full record of joint training, education, tactical and operational experiences so that Airmen are being vectored for the right future opportunities, and to assess where we are as a force,” said Lt. Col. Andrew Frey, SJLT deputy director. Enhancing Joint Teams Air Combat Command is overseeing the certification of a core Joint Task Force Headquarters under the 9th Air Force at Shaw

Air Force Base, South Carolina. Once certified, the JTF itself will be placed in the Global Response Force and be available for taskings to meet global contingencies. Additionally, AF/A3 will work with major command commanders to identify additional component numbered Air Force headquarters with core JTF Headquarters potential. According to Frey and the SJLT team, today’s Air Force is effective and lethal, and SJLT efforts are meant to ensure lethality and readiness in support of the National Defense Strategy. “ We’re strategically infusing joint into the way we develop Airmen,” Frey continued. “This is a change for the Air Force, but that doesn’t mean we’re creating separate joint and air-minded Airmen. The Air Force has to elevate the joint focus in the force to meet the demands of the future fight.”

Several people inside USAFE headquarters refused to leave until they had called home, despite fire and a collapsing ceiling. In the triage center, two people became hysterical after what they had witnessed. Of the 15 wounded, dentists treated two victims on the spot and accompanied them by ambulance to a hospital. One patient suffered an open chest wound and a fractured

femur, while another suffered cuts to the face and around the eyes. Six were treated in the dental clinic and escorted to the base medical facility for follow up. The rest were immediately transported to the medical facility. This swift and professional response to an unforeseen tragedy demonstrates the long-standing Air Force Medical Service commitment to the patient, now embodied by AFMS Trusted Care culture, and the importance of always being ready to deliver care. These principles still drive medical Airmen today.

521st AMOW celebrates 10th anniversary by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing celebrated its tenth anniversary and long history of safely expediting maximum war-fighting and humanitarian effects through rapid and precise global air mobility across a more than 5000 mile area of responsibility Sept. 4 on Ramstein Air Base. The 521st AMOW finds success by remaining true to their core functions: providing all command and control capability, en route maintenance support, and air transportation services for theater and strategic air mobility missions, said John M. Lacomia, 521st AMOW historian. Though just ten years old, the wing played pivotal roles in some of America’s greatest conflicts in the last 75 years. The 521st AMOW was initially established in 1942 as the 555th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion in the midst of World War II. The 555th enabled critical communication support during the D-Day invasion in Normandy, France, and the occupation of Germany from 1944 to 1945. In addition, the battalion provided radar coverage and navigational aid to allied aircraft flying over the U.S. Zone of Occupied Europe during the Berlin Airlift. Following the birth of the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 18, 1947, the battalion became known as the 501st Tactical Control Group. From 1949 to 1960, the unit provided tactical control systems, including aircraft control and warning facilities, passive detection devices and guidance units in central Europe. The group was inactivated on Nov. 18, 1960. On Sept. 4, 2008, the unit was redesignated and then activated as the 521st AMOW. With areas of responsibility in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East and Southwest Asia, the formation of the

Air Mobility Command C-5s sit on the flightline at Naval Station Rota, Spain, April 17. Rota and Moron air bases, Spain, absorbed many U.S. military flights that were diverted from Northern European Routes due to the airspace closure caused by ash being spewed from the Iceland volcanic eruption. Rota typically averages about eight to 13 flights a day but saw double that amount during the airspace closure. Moron, which is about an hour’s drive north of NAVSTA Rota, averages one or two flights a day. During the closure, it had about 10 times that amount. Photo by Master Sgt. Keith Meyers

wing ensured rapid and precise global air mobility. Headquartered at Ramstein Air Base, the wing commands two groups: the 521st Air Mobility Operations Group and the 721st AMOG. Currently, the 521st AMOW consists of more than 2,100 personnel divided into two groups and 10 squadrons, with 21 geographically separated units located in 12 countries. “The 521st AMOW is the linchpin in every operation, 27 years ago we had twice the amount of resources we have today, and yet, we’re accomplishing more than we ever have,” said Lacomia. “In fact, the 521st AMOW has the only maintenance squadron in Air Mobility Command that works on two different air frames. The 521st AMOW’s ability to run diagnostic procedures and perform maintenance on both the C-5 (Galaxy) and C-17 (Globemaster III) gives us great utility wherever we’re

needed. This knowledge and expertise makes the Air Force more successful.” The personnel within the 521st AMOW are responsible for a wide range of roles that collectively play an important part in achieving their core functions. The 521st AMOW command and control teams execute global command and control for Air Mobility Command transient aircraft and flight following AMC missions. The wing’s command and control teams also coordinate ground support requirements. The specialized maintenance personnel of the 521st AMOW provide en route maintenance support through aircraft maintenance units, maintenance operations centers, quality assurance, a regional training center, fuel cell, aerospace ground equipment, forward supply location, and maintenance recovery teams.

The wing’s air transportation professionals operate air terminal operations centers, providing passenger and fleet services, cargo processing, special handling, ramp services, load planning and data records. The wing supports a deployed contingent of approximately 1,000 Airmen. These Airmen augment two Expeditionary Air Mobility Squadrons and the Expeditionary Operations Support Squadron, providing aeromedical evacuation and mission support through stage, intel, tactics, aircrew flight equipment, flying crew chiefs, and Ravens. Since the wing’s inception in 2008, it participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Freedom Sentinel providing strategic, theater, and commercial air mobility. When a rapid response is required the 521st AMOW consistently delivers, said Lacomia. Achievements and honors bestowed on the 521st AMOW are numerous. With the honors of the 555th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion presented to the wing, the 521st AMOW proudly carries the service streamer for World War II: American Theater, as well as World War II campaign streamers for Normandy, Northern France, ArdennesAlsace, central Europe and Rhineland. The wing earned seven Meritorious Unit Awards since 2010 and received two Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards for the work accomplished from 2008-2010. Since the wing was first activated in 1942, as the 555th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion, the unit headquarters has seen 16 assignments, 30 stations, and 22 commanders. Despite frequent changes and relocations the wing experiences sustained success and epitomizes their motto “flexibility, tenacity, velocity… depend on us.”

Women’s efforts recognized, celebrated during Women’s Equality Day

Mayor Genoveva Garcia Calloway from San Pablo, Calif., speaks at a Women’s Equality Day event hosted by 21st Theater Sustainment Command at KMC Onstage, Kleber Kaserne, Aug. 30.

Story and photos by Erinn Burgess Installation Management Command Public Affairs On Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was ratified. Today, 98 years later, the iconic day still recognizes women’s continued efforts toward equality. U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz celebrated 2018 Women’s Equality Day at an event hosted by 21st Theater Sustainment Command at KMC Onstage, Kleber Kaserne, Aug. 30. Col. William S. Galbraith, 21st TSC deputy commanding officer, opened the event with an emphasis on the importance of continuing the fight for equality across the board. “The march for equality will not end until full parity and equal opportunity are attained in every state and every workplace across our nation,” he said. “If we continue to fight for our hopes and aspirations, there will be no limit to the possibilities for our daughters and our granddaughters.” Galbraith then introduced guest speaker Mayor Genoveva Garcia Calloway from San Pablo, Calif. Calloway, whose parents migrated from Mexico to El Paso, Texas, was the first of 14 children in her family to attend college. She was elected to San Pablo City Council in 2002 and is serving her fourth term as mayor.

As she told her story, Calloway drew upon the obstacles she faced growing up, such as moving away from her family after high school to pursue her education in a state where tuition was free. “During my time, a woman could not leave home unless she got married — that was the expectation. So, I had to figure out a way to get around that,” she said. Calloway worked hard, saved enough money for an airfare to California and told her dad she was taking a trip to visit family friends. “I asked my dad, ‘May I go visit this family? I’ll be back in two weeks.’ He said okay… but I knew already that once arriving in California, I was going to get a job right away and that I was not coming back,” she recounted. She did, and she went on to graduate from University of California, Berkeley, with a master’s degree in social work. “In preparing for this speech and reflecting on my own past, I realize the sacrifices and barriers that I had to overcome. I did not do it alone — many women and men came before me and opened doors for women of my generation,” Calloway said. “I, too, am proud and grateful to continue opening doors for others to come behind me.” Calloway encouraged audience members to take a few simple steps to continue the ongoing quest for equal rights.

1. Write a thank-you letter to an influential woman in your life. It doesn’t need to be long, just honest and heartfelt — a few words of gratitude go a long way. 2. Choose a historical female figure to research, take a trip to the library and spend an afternoon learning about her. Involve your family members. 3. Mentor a young girl. 4. Commit to raising the next generation of men and women to respect each other and uphold the same dignity we all seek as human beings.

5. Ask all of the women in your lives to register to vote. “In my own small way, and I think in each small way of each one of you, we are all making history, like the historical women we are honoring today,” Calloway said. “We are breaking barriers and we keep fighting for the rights of women. We can vote now, but we still have a long way to go.” “Let’s go forward and continue making history by making every day Women’s Equality Days,” Calloway concluded.

US, Danish allies train to enhance readiness, interoperability

The 160th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Team and a 29-person Danish surgical team pose for a group photo, Aug. 21, at Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern. The surgical teams conducted combined training at the installation, Aug. 21 to 22.

Story and photos by Sgt. Jeffrey Wadford 30th Medical Brigade As the sun broke over Rhine Ordnance Barracks Aug. 21, members of the 160th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Team took a short break after establishing their footprint in the early morning hours. A few moments later, a convoy of sleek black vans marked with a simple crown and the phrase ‘Forsvaret’ — Danish Defense — pulled into the compound. Twenty nine members of the Danish Royal Army had arrived to conduct training with Europe’s first FRST, Aug. 21 to 22. The first day of training began promptly after introductions and welcoming the 29-person Danish surgical team to Rhine Ordnance Barracks. The team was broken down into three groups and each rotated between the three clinical sections of the FRST: advanced trauma life support, the surgical section, and the intensive care unit. Each section showcased equipment imperative to the level of care for which they are responsible. The ATLS section, which initially resuscitates trauma patients, taught classes on the iStat blood analyzer, the Belmont rapid infusion system, and how to perform a focused assessment with sonography for trauma exam with a portable ultrasound machine. The surgical section laid out instruments found in far-forward war surgery sets, set up an operating suite,

and covered anesthesia protocols for complicated surgical procedures. The ICU showed off newly-acquired monitors and ventilators. These machines enable prolonged field care and help ensure that coalition patients are stable enough for transport before being evacuated to a higher level of care. The Danish medics, doctors, and nurses familiarized themselves with the FRST’s equipment in the afternoon with a hands-on approach. With guidance provided by members of the FRST, they practiced thawing plasma, using the rapid infusion system to resuscitate simulated patients with packed red blood cells, and educated themselves on the proper use of a vital signs monitor. A block of instruction on the joint trauma resuscitation form which documents patient records was also provided. This lesson was particularly important as this form is now the standard for coalition medical teams throughout Operations Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. The second day focused on roles and responsibilities and patient flow through the trauma system. Members of the 160th FRST worked hand in hand with the Danes discussing scenarios and learning how each team cared for certain types of injuries. After lengthy discussions and equipment education, it was time to test the interoperability of both surgical teams. Trauma scenarios and simulated patients allowed the U.S. and

Patient prepped and ready for surgery — a Danish surgeon conducts a time-out.

Danish forces to work side by side in a culminating event to ensure world-class surgical care is provided to NATO coalition soldiers anywhere in the world. Capt. Søren Staunstrup, commander of the Danish Surgical Team, expressed his gratitude for the training opportunity. “The cultural aspect, both social and professional, greatly contributed to our readiness and ability to work with American Forces,” Staunstrup said. “Seeing the equipment and procedures has definitely helped prepare the team for any future missions.” Assignments in Europe offer a unique opportunity for service mem-

bers of all ranks to train and interact with allies and partners of the U.S. Most exercises seen outside of Europe are conducted at a strategic level, however, within Europe, any given Tuesday could present an opportunity to train with U.S. allies. “This opportunity to train and exchange knowledge with our Danish counterparts helped strengthen relationships with our NATO ally,” said Maj. Chris Angeles, commander of the 160th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Team. “We found that although our languages may differ, our practice was virtually the same and it was easy to work side by side as ‘Soldiers Saving Soldiers.’”

Volleyball, tennis underway at KMC schools

Mark Butler of Kaiserslautern High is the top returning male tennis player at KMC area schools this season.

Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Football kicks off this weekend but lots of other sports are also ready to start their seasons at schools in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Athletes have undergone rigorous preseason workouts and cuts have been made as coaches piece together their 2018 lineups.

TENNIS Kaiserslautern High The Raiders are looking forward to this season and appear to have strength at the top of the boys’ and girls’ teams. Coaches said there is a bevy of optimism heading into this fall with new courts, a new school, and some obvious talent appearing at preseason practices. The girls’ team finished with a 3-3 regular season record last season, but lost three of its top-seeded players to graduation. Incoming freshmen, returning players with a year of experience under their belts, and several transfers are being asked to fill the void. The overall boys’ team is a work in progress, but will be anchored by Mark Butler, a senior, coming off his semifinal appearance in DODEA European championships. Butler finished fourth overall in the highly competitive Euros final meet and took his opponent to four sets. Returning sophomore Luca Petritz, and newcomer sophomore William Alsing have looked solid in this year’s preseason while several returners and newcomers are battling out for varsity spots. The rebuilding boys’ team also finished the 2017 campaign with a 3-3 mark, down from consecutive 5-1 records the previous three years. “Often those just starting in the sport

may end up improving enough to fill varsity spots towards the end of the season,” said coach Beth Quinn, who works with David Quinn and Justin Bates on the KHS staff. “Tennis is a highly skilled and athletic lifetime sport that takes time to develop. We have had student athletes who work hard and study the game of better players and go from the very bottom of the team, to varsity starters in a short period of time. Every season is different.”

Region selection Kayla Dyer is a leading returning defensive player while Korrin Harris is one of the team’s strongest setters and Gina Popovic is a potent outside hitter. “We have had several move-ins over the summer and are looking to place a competitive team on the court,” Scalise said. “We’ve had a large turnout for volleyball this season, and honestly, we are excited about the possibilities this season holds for our program.”

Ramstein High The Royals are being led by coaches Cynthia Sebastian and Katina Campbell. Ramstein had a duo to win the girls’ doubles title at Europeans last season plus another pair in boys’ doubles that took third place. The overall team finish for Ramstein was second, behind champion SHAPE.

Baumholder Coach Jason Steadman arrived from Kaiserslautern and took over the Baumholder program, with the season beginning next weekend. Steadman is assisted by Tim Maracle and inherits a group of athletes that is both tested and inexperienced. Baumholder plays in a three-way match competition at Brussels on Sept. 15 then hosts two other schools in matches the following weekend of

VOLLEYBALL Kaiserslautern High Led by coaches Aaron Scalise, Zachary Robinson and Erin Shaffner, the Lady Raiders hope to use several tall and talented players to improve on last season’s 3-11 record. The KHS team will travel around Europe along with other DODEA schools, playing on match days with two or three other schools each weekend. The KHS team will open play on its own new home court September 29, hosting the Panthers from Stuttgart High. “We have a tough schedule, yet I do not believe there is any better way to prepare than to play the toughest competition,” Scalise said. “We want to continually measure ourselves and make adjustments to improve our play.” Three varsity starters return this season and each of them are juniors. All-

Sept. 22 in their home gym. Annabel Brinkmeyer was an All-Region selection last season but many more Buccaneer players will be called on to make the team competitive in coming months. Ramstein High With a coaching staff headed by Mell Henriques, the Lady Royals are optimistic this season after seeing more than 70 players show up for preseason tryouts. The season begins this weekend with a four-team match event hosted by Stuttgart High. Set to participate are squads from Ramstein, Stuttgart, Black Forest and Kaiserslautern in the roundrobin match series. Ramstein returns some players with height including All-Region middle hitter Masaya Archbold from the 2017 team, which made it to the Euros semifinals before falling to Naples. Europeans championships for all three area schools will happen November 1-3 after two months of regular season play.

Ramstein senior volleyball players include (from left) Shemilia Johnson, Paige Nielsen, Masaya Archbold, Morgan Gabriel, Adelina Bonilla, Elizabeth Connolly, and Jaya Worthington.

World’s biggest wine fest takes place Sept. 7 to 17 Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. The traditional “Wurst markt,” known as the world’s biggest wine fest, will start today only 35 kilometers east of Kaiserslautern. For the 602nd time, Bad Duerkheim along the German Wine Street will host this annual fest in two parts: from today to Tuesday and then again from Sept. 14 to 17. Organizers expect about 600,000 visitors from all over the world. An amusement park with about 300 vendors and ride owners will be set up on the 45,000 square meter fest grounds, next to the “Duerkheimer Fass,” the

world’s biggest wine barrel. This barrel actually houses a restaurant and if it was used as a barrel, it could hold 1.7 million liters of wine. The Wurstmarkt, mean ing sausage fair, received its name from the fact that fest goers ate enormous amounts of sausage during the event in the first part of the 19th century. However, the main attraction of the fest are 36 little wine tents called “Schubkarchstaende,” wheel barrows, because vintners rolled wine barrels on wheel barrows up to “Monte Sancti Michaeli,” Michelsberg hill, to quench pilgrims’ thirst in the 15th century. Each year at the end of September on Michael’s day, pilgrims visited the lit tle chapel on top of the hill. On the way up there, ven dors sold their goods. Then

church dignitaries no longer accepted this kind of pilgrim age. Market activities were relocated to the bottom of Michelsberg, and the “sausage fair” was born. In the year 1910, city offi cials decided to celebrate the fest earlier in September and no longer on Michaels’ day, because of better weather. In 1926, the Wurstmarkt got extended by a day, in 1951 by seven, and finally in 1965, the fest was extended by eight days. Since 1985, the fest is nine days long. Wurstmarkt will begin at 5 p.m. today with a concert in front of St.Ludwig Church on Ludwigplatz. Winterize your house By The Find-It-Guide.com Although there can be more hot days ahead of us, the cool nights are a good reminder winter is just around the corner. You likely do not own the house you live in while stationed abroad, but that doesn’t mean you get out of all those “honey to-do” list items you would like to forget. If you are new to your new home, there are some things to think about before the days get short and cold that will help you get ready for the eventual European winter. We have accumulated a list to help you get ready! Fill your oil now. Don’t wait to fill your tanks in the winter when prices are at their highest. If you have a house with big oil tanks for your heating and hot water (as many older houses will have), you will need to schedule an oil delivery. Appointments may take some time to schedule depending on how busy the oil company is, so make the call now to avoid the mad rush. “Heizöl” or “Heizoel” means “heating oil” in English. Also make sure to tell them you would like to use a VAT form! Get your fireplace wood delivered. You may start seeing signs on the side of the road reading “Brennholz.” This is the German word for firewood. Prices will vary, but there is a limited supply of dry wood (that has been sitting for a year or two) in some areas, which may make it a bit harder to get wood when it is cold. Fresh wood is more difficult to burn in open fireplaces, so act early to get dry wood. Ask if they will deliver to your house or if that is extra. Run your ceiling fans in reverse. Once the temps dip down enough where your heat kicks on, you will want to switch your ceiling fans so they rotate in the clockwise direction for winter to generate a warm breeze (counterclockwise for summer). Continued from front page of Properties section Block drafts by doors. You can save up to 30% of wasted energy just by putting a door snake in front of exterior door jams on the floor. Warm air escapes very easily, even on newer doors with a good seal. Make it yourself or get them at the store. Lower your hot water heater temperature. You can save up to 10% on your annual heating bill just by lowering your hot water heater. In the winter, it will feel plenty warm since that air is cold around you. Clean your gutters. There are likely some rainy days coming as the days get shorter. You will need to have good clean

paths in your gutters, so clear them of debris and fallen leaves. Make sure you leave some time to clean the gutters to avoid poor drainage. Deal with dead tree limbs. If you live at a place that has any trees or hearty bushes, you will want to cut those dead limbs down before they come down in the inevitable winter storm that carries strong winds with it. Contact a specialist for those bigger or higher limbs. In German, tree cutting service is “Baumpfleger” or for small jobs, garden service is “Gartenpfleger.” Check your chimney. Generally, the “Schornsteinfeger” or chimney sweep comes around for regular visits every year to each area. He or she usually checks

your chimney, even when you don’t call for an appointment. If you are unsure if your chimney has been checked or swept, you may want to call your local “Schornsteinfeger” to see if he can give your place a look. Mind your mold. In northern Europe, mold can grow very easily. You will want to take car of any spots in your house that are already springing up before the winter comes, when it is more difficult to get rid of because windows are not opened as frequently. “Schimmel,” mold in German, can be easily combated with a cleaning spray from the hardware store or “Baumarkt.” Look for “Schimmelspray.” The store employees can help you understand how to use it (and they often speak English!). Bad Dürkheim Wine Festival Today to Sept. 17 What on earth is a Wurstmarkt? Literally a “sausage market,” the Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt is a wine festival, and is the main event of the year in Rhineland-Pfalz, and is one of the largest, most traditional and entertaining public festivals in Germany. Have a seat in the wine stalls, or “wheelbarrows” as they are referred to by the locals, and choose from over 150 different wines from over 50 different local wineries, ranging from the mellow Riesling to the finest ice-wine, all of which will be served in a traditional half-liter glass. Stuttgart Cannstatter Volksfest Sept. 29 For almost 200 years, the Cannstatter Volksfest has increasingly grown in popularity to become the second largest European festival (second only to the Munich Oktoberfest). The crowd is largely Europeans who are in the know about where they can have an authentic experience steeped in rich tradition. The Nun (R)

KIN (PG-13)

The Little Stranger (R)

The Meg (PG-13)

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret — risking not only their lives. Stars: Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet Director: Corin Hardy

Chased by a vengeful criminal, the feds and a gang of otherworldly soldiers, a recently released ex-con and his adopted teenage brother are forced to go on the run with a weapon of mysterious origin as their only protection. Starring: Jack Reynor, Myles Truitt, James Franco, Zoë Kravitz, Dennis Quaid Director: Jonathan Baker and Josh Baker

Dr. Faraday travels to Hundreds Hall, home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. The Hall is now in decline, and its inhabitants remain haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. When Faraday takes on a new patient there, he has no idea how closely the family’s story is about to become entwined with his own. Starring: Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Wilson Director: Lenny Abrahamson

A massive creature attacks a deep-sea submersible, leaving it disabled and trapping the crew at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. With time running out, rescue diver Jonas Taylor must save the crew and the ocean itself from an unimaginable threat — a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon. Stars: Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson Director: Jon Turteltaub
