Each seatbelt was tugged, corrected if needed, then laid crossed on the red chairs.

A white rope was dragged along braided metal anchor line cables to check for any deficiencies. When the jumpers boarded the aircraft, eyes looked intently at the rigs on each jumper, while hands tightened and pulled at straps and harnesses.

When safety checks were done, the men and women of the Polish and American military were ready to do what they came there to do – jump from a C-130J Super Hercules cargo aircraft with a parachute.

From beginning to end, the 435th Contingency Response Group jumpmasters ensured all personnel safely jumped and landed on their intended target during Aviation Detachment Rotation 22-4 training in Powidz, Poland, Sep. 13-15.

POW/MIA week honors local namesake

A tribute to Father Emil Kapaun was dedicated in honor of his sacrifice as a prisoner of war missing in action during the Father Emil Kapaun Traffic Circle Dedication ceremony at Kapaun Air Station, Sep. 12.

“May all those who drive by [this traffic circle] daily be visibly remind-

ed of the sacrifices of Father Kapaun and the numerous unknown fallen heroes,” said Maj. Mario Catungal, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain. “Their deaths were not in vain and they will never be forgotten.”

The monument placed in the traffic circle was made possible through

September 23, 2022 Commander-in-Chief’s Award for installation Excellence funds, which were awarded to Team Ramstein as the 2022 winner of the award.

The Father Emil Kapaun Traffic Circle Monument can be found on Kapaun Air Station, Kaiserslautern, at the traffic circle nearest to the commissary and shoppette.

Kapaun was a Roman Catholic priest and former U.S. Army chaplain who was commissioned into the U.S. Army chaplain corps in 1944, and served through WWII and the Korean War when he was captured as a POW. “Shortly after his capture, Chaplain Kapaun, with complete disregard for his personal safety and unwavering resolve, bravely pushed aside an enemy soldier preparing to execute Sgt. 1st Class Herbert A. Miller,” said Bruce Bartholomew, a member of the Knights of Columbus, who also spoke at the ceremony.

Kapaun carried Miller 100 miles to the prison camp where the chaplain was eventually killed by a Chinese communist at a POW camp in 1951, but not before doing everything within his power to help the people around him. Kapaun was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013 for extraordinary heroism and selfless service.

“May his servant leadership con-

tinue to be a model that guides the armed forces and their code of conduct in captivity,” Catungal said.

POW/MIA events were held throughout the week, including a homage to Father Kapaun’s sacrifice — the log carry.

The 24-hour POW/MIA log carry, ruck and run held Sep. 15 and 16, included service members working as a team to carry logs or rucks. Each pound of weight and lap around the track represented the recovery of a missing service member.

The closing ceremony, held Sep. 16, closed out the week.

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Kenneth Cordier, former 433rd Tactical Fighter Squadron pilot, was the keynote speaker. He spoke on his first-hand experience as a prisoner of war.

“The day of our release came and we were given clothes and even shoes,” said Cordier. “We were marched out to the bus at the entrance to the prison and drove to the Hanoi airport. Our names were called out one-by-one in the order we were captured and we stepped forward and saluted the Brigadier General and went to the aircraft that was taking us home.”

ADR 22-4 from Page 1 ADR 22-4 integrated U.S., Polish, German and Italian military, to allow for enhancing the interoperability and airlift capabilities among allied armed forces via realistic joint, air operation scenarios throughout Poland.

As part of the ADR 22-4 training, the 37th Airlift Squadron requested the support of the 435th CRG jumpmasters for three days of scheduled static line air drops, two of which were with the Polish land forces.

The 435th CRG is the U.S. Air Forces in Europe’s only expeditionary open-the-base force to provide a scalable, cross-functional, rapidly deployable force that enables rapid standup of combat operations anywhere in the European Command area of responsibility.

“It was my first time working with foreign jumpers. It was really cool to see how they operate. They work very similarly to how we do,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Gonzalez, 435th CRG jumpmaster. “Obviously, they’re speaking in their own language, but, while watching them I could pick up that the words they were saying were similar to what we say when giving the exact same hand and arm signals.”

aircrew communicate about needs for the mission such as ground operations and visibility.

This communication is essential in ensuring the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Airmen are able to conduct their mission to integrate airpower at the tactical edge, from the ground up.

“The pilots are on comms with personnel at the drop zone, and anything that would affect the jump I relay to the jumpmaster,” said Airman 1st Class George Alonso, 37th AS loadmaster. “We’re working very

fast, but we are focused on making sure the jumps are conducted safely, on time and on target.”

Prior to participating in ADR 22-4, the jumpers’ dedication to their craft began by going through an intense three-week-long course to become a jumpmaster at U.S. Army Garrison Fort Benning, Georgia.

A jumpmaster is a service member who is in charge of every other member conducting a jump for that mission. One of the first tests at jumpmaster school is a five-page document, or pre-jump, which is

memorized and repeated verbatim to an instructor, which takes about 15 minutes to recite completely, said Gonzalez.

“Pre-jump goes over what the jumper is supposed to do while in the air,” Gonzalez explained. “Once they exit the aircraft, jumpers run through an entire checklist prior to reaching the ground, like checking their canopy, gaining control of the canopy, and preparing to hit the ground.”

Pre-jump is not just a test to pass, but an essential aspect of the

job. Along with a myriad of items to go over during Sustained Airborne Training at Fort Benning, it must be recited prior to every pre-jump procedure a jumpmaster is responsible for.

“Showtime for jumpmasters and those jumping is usually 2-3 hours before boarding an aircraft,” Gonzalez said. “When conducting pre-jump procedures with the jumpers, I have to go over what they do in the aircraft and what they do when they have exited it.”

During that time, they go over sustained exiting, red lighting, jump refusals, towed jumpers, and emergency procedures, or SERJTE. Gonzalez explained that this covers what a jumper should do while inside an aircraft during normal operations and emergency situations.

These physical and mental checks are to ensure the safety of not only those jumping, but aircrew and any other personnel onboard the aircraft.

Over the three days of static line air drops, the 435th CRG jumpmasters clearly demonstrated their respect and love for their job. Gonzalez said the airborne world is the same no matter the language and jump systems.

“It’s a very high-risk activity that we do,” Gonzalez said. “Any airborne operation that goes down without any injuries is a good one.”

Pet Ownership Being a pet owner can bring joy and wellbeing to both the pet and the owner.

With ownership comes responsibility.

Pet ownership in Germany and in government quarters is a privilege.

Residents in family housing must comply with applicable laws, installationspecific requirements for pet ownership, registration, control and vaccination.

Pet owners must register their pet(s) with the Veterinary Clinic located on Pulaski Barracks within ten working days after arrival in the KMC. A current rabies shot is required for registration.

The total number of dogs and/or cats allowed is two pets at any weight or not to exceed three with a combined weight of 150 pounds per MFH unit. “Aggressive” or “potentially aggressive” pets are prohibited. Excessive dog barking/

howling is a primary complaint received

by Housing Management. Keeping your pet from becoming a nuisance to the neighbors is a must. Cleaning up after your pet is an ownership responsibility.

Pet relief stations are located throughout housing areas. Pets are not allowed on playgrounds or sports fields and please do not allow pets to urinate or defecate on balconies. Ramstein hosts 58th annual bazaar

The 86th Force Support Squadron and the Ramstein Officers’ Spouses’ Club hosted the annual four-day event, which included more than 120 vendors from throughout Europe this year.

“Major events like the Ramstein Bazaar require thousands of volunteer hours to pull-off, but every second spent on this endeavor brings our entire Kaiserslautern Military Community together,” said Col.

Denny Davies, 86 Airlift Wing vice commander. “For 58 years, the Ramstein Bazaar has supported hundreds of thousands of Airmen and families who called Ramstein home, and we look forward to continuing that legacy.”

The Bazaar began in 1964 has grown into not only Ramstein’s favorite annual event, but also the world’s largest DOD bazaar, explained Karyn Lasch, 2022 Ramstein Bazaar chair.

“One hundred percent of net proceeds from the bazaar go back into the KMC,’’ she said. “Being part of this tradition that gives back in a big way to our community is very fulfilling and the reason why so many of our volun-

teers step up to put on this event each year.”

While the event serves the KMC in a variety of ways, the event would not be nearly as successful without the team who put it together and the volunteers who supported it.

“People may not realize that as soon as the bazaar ends, we start planning for the next bazaar,” Lasch said. “It takes thousands of volunteer hours before the bazaar opens, and during the week of the bazaar volunteers help fill hundreds of shifts.”

Ramstein introduces VIPER Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lauren Jacoby 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A multitude of changes have been implemented since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-processing is no exception.

The Virtual In and Out Processing Essential Resource, VIPER, is a virtual in and out processing Sharepoint site that provides a “one-stop shop” for military members, and soon-to-be civilians.

This system allows for a paperless, more stream-lined process.

With VIPER, Commander Support Staff provides sponsors with a sponsor toolkit outlining the needs of incoming personnel. The sponsor is also able to view the progress the newcomer is making on their in-processing, helping them to better assist in the process. The checklist also comes in order of priority which allows members to process through the most crucial sections of in-processing, such as finance and medical.

“VIPER was the brainchild of Airmen who wanted to improve the way the base handles both in and

out-processing here at Ramstein,” said Eller Pamintuan, Knowledge Management Center director.

Staff Sgt. Collin Chambers, 786th Force Support Squadron assistant noncommissioned officer in charge of promotions, retirements, and separations, and Staff Sgt. Jonathan Hagen, 86th Airlift Wing Enterprise Information Services non-commissioned officer in charge, began collaborating in 2021, and with the migration to SharePoint Online, VIPER was born.

VIPER was created to support the need to change from the traditional face-to-face appointments for in-processing and out-processing, which proved difficult when social-distancing restrictions were in place.

“Having the opportunity to establish a resource, or system, that centralizes all the information required to in/out-process from this base, was an opportunity I couldn’t let pass by,” said Hagen. “The fact that my team had additional resources that could improve the transmission of personal information between Base Agencies and in/out-bound

members was a valuable bonus.”

VIPER strives to add as many agencies as possible to the virtual platform to make Ramstein more accessible and easier to navigate.

“At the end of the day, I could not have done this without my

team,” said Senior Master Sgt. Victoria Thornton, 786th FSS senior enlisted leader. “I really appreciate the help of Technical Sgt. Christopher Stoller, 86th Maintenance Group continuous process improvement/innovation

manager, who has been my CPI blackbelt guru.”

21 TSC partners with French to enhance NATO capabilities

by Natalie Weaver 21st Theater Sustainment Command The 21st Theater Sustainment Command and French Logistics Command met in Wiesbaden, Aug. 31, to discuss joint operations necessary to reach 2028 strategic objectives. The two NATO allies will work towards synchronizing efforts to achieve cohesive capabilities in all domains and the ability to deploy and sustain one another globally.

U.S. Army Europe and Africa and French Land Forces Command are official partners under the Unit Partnership Program, focused on training together with NATO standards and doctrine to reach operational and tactical interoperability. The program’s framework will improve their ability to operate together in high-intensity warfare across the full spectrum of bilateral and multilateral operations.

Originally signed in March 2020

by Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Christopher Cavoli, and Lt. Gen. Vincent Guionie, commander, French Land Forces, and the partnership resumed this August after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted.

U.S. and French brigade-sized units were chosen to support the partnership and establish relationships. 21st TSC is tied to its French counterpart Commandement de Force Logistique, or COM LOG, to cross-train systems, tactics, techniques and procedures in an effort to enhance army-to-army sustainment cooperation.

COM LOG, headquartered in Lille, France, invited 21st TSC to view their capabilities in April 2022. “[COM LOG] were immediately responsive and also very eager to develop this relationship,”

said Maj. Philip Freeborn, officer in charge, Multi-National Integration Cell, 21st TSC. France is the oldest U.S. ally with 240 years of diplomatic relations, and a history of supporting NATO logistics requirements by increasing freedom of movement in mainland France and expanding seaport, air, land and rail capacity within Europe. Soon after the partnership became official, France supported the 21st TSC in a sustainment operation by assisting in the reception, staging and onward movement of equipment amplifying operational flexibility with regard to setting the European theater in Port La Rochelle, July 2020.

Two important initiatives discussed were transparency of NATO Logistics Functional Area Services suite of tools and sharing heavy

equipment transports. According to Freeborn, working together with French partners and utilizing their maritime assets and heavy equipment transports would set conditions for future interoperability.

“It’s great to not only have commercial possibilities to help us receive and move heavy equipment across theater, but why not also rely on our neighboring allies to do it?” said Freeborn.

Embedding French and U.S. officers into each other’s exercises under the initiative of improving the human dimension of interoperability was another agree-to-action item that developed from the partnership. Lt. Marc Ayello is a COM LOG Transportation Corps platoon leader and participant in the Saber Junction 22 exercise.

Saber Junction 22 involves 13 nations and provides a combat

training center rotation for the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade to assess the brigade’s readiness to execute unified land operations in a joint, combined environment and to promote interoperability with participating ally and partner nations. The exercise was scheduled to take place at the U.S. Army’s Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels training areas in Germany, from Sep. 6-16.

Ayello contributed to decision processes and provided logistical support in the tactical operation center alongside Lt. Col. John Abella, commander, 18th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st TSC and Capt. William Southard, operations officer in charge, 18th CSSB, 16th SB, 21st TSC. According to Ayello, participating in joint exercises improves his English dia-

logue and teaches him the U.S. Army procedures and rules.

“We have to work together to reinforce interoperability between allies,” said Ayello.

Upcoming Logistics Functional Area Services system courses offered in English by COM LOG and French training exercises like MONSABERT 23 and ORION 23 will focus on exchanging and integrating personnel to strengthen relationships, enhance NATO logistics, and aim to eventually accomplish a compatible level of interoperability.

Supporting democracy, liberty and freedom at home and abroad is a shared commitment between the U.S. and France. The nearly two and a half century partnership is making strategic efforts to become more confident in their ability to interoperate in multi-domain operations.

Tactical Combat Casualty Care — a life-saving tool box Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Lauren Jacoby 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein Airmen are now able to take advantage of the Tactical Combat Casualty Care training program, which was recently implemented by the U.S. Air Force, giving multi-capable Airmen the tools to provide life-saving trauma care, both in combat, and on the home front.

Tactical Combat Casualty Care, also known as TCCC or TC3, is the new standard across the Department of Defense for first response care as a Secretary of Defense initiative. As of June 1, the TCCC program has completely replaced Self-Aid Buddy Care, also known as SABC. TCCC is broken into four tiers: All Service Members Course, Combat Lifesaver Course, Combat Medic/ Corpsman Course and Combat Paramedic/Provider Course.

Currently, only tiers one through three are published through the Defense Health Agency.

All service members are expected to be certified in the tier one component by April 2023. Depending on a member’s Air Force Specialty Code, members may need to certify in additional tiers by August 2023.

size the importance of the use of the MARCH algorithm: Massive bleeding, airway, respiration, circulation and hypothermia/head injuries. MARCH provides the order in which the life-saving skills should be applied. This also affords a better opportunity to work as a team to make sure combat injuries are treated both quickly and properly.

“Although we say they are basic skills, when you look at a maintainer, who is going to be first at the point of injury if something were to occur on the flightline, them being trained to the standard affords them the knowledge to use those learned skills until medical professionals are able to show up and do their jobs.”

TCCC aims to help close the gap of preventable deaths to the goal of zero by teaching the total force the five life-saving skills, as well as applying those learned skills with hands-on training.

“Being someone who has been

Nova Benington, 86th Medical Squadron Podiatry Clinic noncommissioned officer in charge. “The performance piece is what prepares you to use those five life-saving skills to get your patient to the next echelon of care; to ultimately get them home.”

Unlike SABC, TCCC will not be a yearly requirement. With the exception of medical AFSCs, service members will need the initial TCCC course, and then would not need to renew their certification until the member is due for a perma-

nent change of station, or has been tasked with a deployment.

Another benefit to TCCC is the team aspect MARCH algorithm massive bleeding, airway, respiration, circulation, hypothermia provides. This will be used by all tier levels for point of injury care.

For most, Airman Leadership School is part of the transition between the ranks of junior Airman and NCO and provides a training opportunity for members to learn leadership skills. However, it is not limited to uniformed Airmen. U.S. Air Force civil service members can attend the course and are eligible to earn the same awards as other service members.

Rebecca Paddymo, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron program coordinator, attended the ALS 22-6 class and was the first Team Ramstein civilian to receive the John L. Levitow award for outstanding leadership. The 569 USFPS is based at Vogelweh Military Complex, but is part of the 86th Airlift Wing based on Ramstein Air Base.

“I attended ALS as a way to progress my career and learn everything I could about the military, but I did not expect to win anything,” Paddymo said. “I do not go to work trying to win awards. The award is special, but the class and my teammates are what I am going to look back on the most.”

Paddymo said her goal during ALS was to gain an understanding of the bigger picture that comes with service.

“I may not have been able to do uniform inspections with my classmates, but I still marched with them — even if I was in high heels,” Paddymo laughed. “We are all part of the same team and we are there to achieve the same goals.

I was so grateful my teammates accepted and welcomed me as one of them even though I do not wear a uniform. I loved every second of the class.”

Paddymo’s leadership knew she wanted to continue her education in the military. After she asked to be part of the class, her leaders jumped into action and got her a spot in the course.

“She always wants to learn more and be better than she was yesterday,” said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Kayla Hatfield, 569 USFPS commander support staff section officer in charge. “All of us here want the best for her.”

Hatfield believes Paddymo is a successful person because of her work ethic and attitude. She said Paddymo greets every opportunity with a smile and never turns down a challenge.

“She is a crucial part of the team here and is always helping someone,” said Hatfield. “She puts

her best foot forward when doing anything and it shows in her work.”

Paddymo said she was conflicted about the award. She said at times she feels like a military member would be better suited to win the award, however, her instructor disagrees.

“She came here and led Airmen right from the get-go,” said Tech.

“She was a student in this class and was not chosen based on anything else except her peers. They thought she was the best in the class and her grades were exceptional.”

Paddymo worked in various jobs in the civilian world before working for the U.S. military and brought a unique experience and perspective to the team.

“During the class she provided a valuable insight into the civilian sector of the Air Force that many Airmen do not get to see,” Linen said. “She has worked for the private sector and brought a corporate mindset to the class. I think more civilians should participate in professional military education courses because we can only benefit from learning from each other.”

Paddymo was born in Ghana and moved to the U.S. later in life and her family who still lives there were thrilled to hear she won the award.

“When I won the award they were so happy to hear it, but they were more interested in hearing about the experiences I had during my class,” Paddymo said. “They know I am not driven by awards and decorations, but by the people I surround myself with and how they help me become a better person.”

Paddymo reflects on the class with fond memories of the people she was with. She said it is a valuable resource everyone who is eligible should attend.

“The class meant so much to me and it opened my eyes to so many great things,” Paddymo said.

“My classmates built me up and let me into their world. I learned about other people’s lives and how they positively affect the Air Force.

It showed me there are great people around this area and how they are so caring and intelligent. If I could, I would take the class again in a heartbeat.”

POW/MIA, a ruck to remember

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Cordier was captured after his F-4 Phantom aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile, he then was a prisoner for 2,284 days in four different prisons across Hanoi, Vietnam.

Germersheim Army Depot receives German permit to store up to 1,900 tons of packaged oil, petroleum products

A newly renovated Defense Logistics Agency warehouse increases the storage and distribution capacity for packaged oil and petroleum products at Germersheim Army Depot. The depot is part of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, headquartered in Kaiserslautern.

The German government approved the building for full use up to the permitted 1,900 tons on Aug. 16.

The Defense Logistics Agency warehouse at Germersheim Army Depot was recently renovated to increase the storage and distribution capacity for packaged oil and petroleum products. The depot is part of U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, headquartered in Kaiserslautern.

The German government approved the building for full use up to the permitted 1,900 tons on Aug. 16. Current and future hazardous materials stored on premise follow all applicable German and American environmental, safety, industrial health and fire prevention requirements and poses no threat to the health or safety of the surrounding community.

The existing types of inventories stored within the warehouse will remain the same — no new materials will be added to the inventory. Existing inventory will go from 70 tons to a new capacity of 1,900 tons.

Most of the items are similar to materials stored at local retail and automotive centers and are considered “low hazard” items.

Items stored in the warehouse are common-use automotive and

weatherproofing products, to include lubricating oil, deicing fluid, hydraulic fluid, antifreeze cleaning compounds, grease, brake fluid, fog oil, sealant, charcoal soap, lavatory antifreeze, dust control agent inhibitor, tire foam liquid, fire extinguisher batteries, and fluorescent and metal halide lights.

The items in building 7915 are stored in approved manufacturer packaging. If a package is compromised while being handled by equipment or personnel, the package is segregated from the storage site and repackaged or disposed of. Another important safety consideration is that the entire building is constructed as a secondary containment unit that can contain any spill and also serve as a water retention system for fire response.

Regular inspections are performed by the German Armed Forces using the same safety and environmental regulations applied to German military installations. Should an emergency response be required, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Fire Station on Germersheim Army Depot has personnel trained on hazardous materials operations and has all the necessary equipment to

respond to any hazardous materials incident on the installation. In addition, resources and personnel from other garrison fire stations would be available to support any incident at Germersheim Army Depot.

U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz also has a Mutual Aid Agreement with both the county and city of Germersheim and the communities of Lingenfeld and Bellheim to provide mutual support and through the Status of Forces Agreement, garrison fire responders can request additional resources from the nation partners.

The warehouse is located within the Germersheim Army Depot perimeter with entrance points protected by security personnel. The facility itself is protected in accordance with all U.S. Government regulations, to include ID card access.

66 Transportation Company support Ukraine crisis

Since the beginning of April, the 66th Transportation Company, 39th Transportation Battalion, has conducted transportation operations in support of the Ukrainian Crisis. The 66th Transportation Company’s support, while working with NATO partners, ensured Ukrainian Soldiers received the equipment and ammunition designated to them, and demonstrates the U.S. commitment to this operation and to our NATO partners. During these support operations, the 66th Transportation Company has been the most active Transportation Company in the U.S. Army. From June through August, the 66th Transportation Company has delivered 305 20-foot containers of materials and equipment, driven 384,048 miles, and operated a vehicle for 17,764 man hours or two calendar years’ worth of hours. To ensure these operations occurred without any issues, the 66th Transportation Company operated their vehicle and soldiers like clockwork.

Suicide Awareness Month Reminder: Seek help for PTSD

by Staff Sgt. Aubrey Pomares 162nd Wing September is National Suicide Prevention Month and a fitting time to draw awareness to something that affects many service members — Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. According to the American Psychiatric Association, PTSD is a disorder that can occur after a person has been exposed to actual or threatened death, injury, or sexual violence.

PTSD is especially common among veterans, who may encounter a number of traumatic experiences while serving in the military. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 10-15 percent of veterans will develop PTSD at some point following their military service.

“Some of the symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and avoidance of situations or changes in mood or thinking,” said Darci Thompson, 162d Wing director of Psychological Health Services.

Although treatment for PTSD has a high success rate, service members may still feel apprehensive about getting help due to the perceived consequences of taking action.

“There is certainly a stigma when it comes to mental disorders,” Thompson said. “But the military has shifted signifi-

Oftentimes, that support comes in the form of a referral to a therapist who specializes in working with service members with PTSD. Karoline Crawshaw, a licensed counselor in Tucson, Arizona, works primarily with military and paramilitary members and said PTSD is an issue that cannot be ignored: “PTSD symptoms do not magically disappear. Treatment is necessary to alleviate the symptoms, let the psychological wound heal and scar over. Untreated, a person suffering from PTSD can lose their relationships, family, freedom, job, home, and life.”

One of the chief benefits of living in Germany is that nearly everyone is close to trees. That may sound odd, but consider this: Few natural wonders are more wondrous than Germany’s forests in autumn.

Germany is famous for its forests, and with good reason.

They can be found nearly everywhere, and can be appreciated from almost anywhere. When you drive beautiful two-lane roads through, say, the Black Forest, it’s like you’ve entered into a whole new world. It is literally incredible.

Best of all, you can almost always find (free, no-fee) hik-

ing spots along the way. If you stop and go for a walk (or run, or mountain bike ride), you can lose yourself for hours and come back refreshed.

Since autumn is upon us, here are four great places to begin your leaf appreciation tour.

Black Forest Even though the Black Forest is famous for its evergreen trees, autumn colors can be found in abundance. Best of all, the ambiance of the Black Forest is perfect for the fall season. There are golden fields, long shadows, gothic villages and comfortable gasthauses in which to warm yourself. As night begins to fall, things might even start to seem a little spooky.

a ton of jumping off points. Start in Pforzheim and wind your way south along Highway 294 to Freudenstadt. Or begin in Baden Baden and dive into the heart of the forest along Highway 500.

Whatever route you choose, you won’t be disappointed.

Palatinate Forest For those who live in or near Kaiserslautern, you have natural gold right in your back yard. The Palatinate Forest is absolutely beautiful during the autumn.

From a distance, the hills can almost seem like a painting: Grand splotches of gold, green and orange intermingle. It’s outstanding. And there are an abundance of places to hike and bike in the forest. It’s a must-do.
