KMC Fire & Emergency Services supports Fire Prevention Week 2018 Story and graphic courtesy of KMC Fire Emergency & Services Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical home fire, you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice. KMC Fire and Emergency Services is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association, the official sponsor of Fire Prevention
Week for more than 90 years, to promote this year’s campaign “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” which works to educate the public about basic but essential ways to quickly and safely escape a home fire. Fire Prevention Week is from Oct. 7 to 13. As you are preparing yourself and your family on what to do in case of a fire, follow these simple tips to help eliminate possible fire hazards in your home: • Keep anything that can catch fire
away from the stove top while cooking, and keep a lid nearby when frying with oils or grease. You can slide the lid over the pan to smother a grease fire. • Store any grills and propane tanks outside, in the closed position, and ensure all the parts for them are in good working order. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when operating them! • Keep gasoline stored outside the home (in a garage or lawn shed) and in a tightly closed metal or
plastic container approved by an independent testing laboratory. • Ensure you are cleaning the lint from your dryers after each use, and that there are no frayed wires or other electrical problems with both your washer and dryer. • Change your batteries in your smoke detectors once a year. Additionally, ensure you have an escape plan for your home in case of an emergency. Draw a See FIRE PREVENTION WEEK, Page 3

SECRETARY OF THE ARMY from Page 1 make sure that we are all as interoperable as possible, and as capable as we need to be on future battlefields,” said Esper. Afterwards, Esper met with leaders and Soldiers of the 7th Army Training Command, JMRC, and the 173rd Airborne. He spoke about the importance of training and readiness. “Across the Army, we are seeing important increases in readiness,” said Esper. “As I walk around today with the 173rd Airborne Brigade, I see the same thing on the ground with Soldiers conducting operations in a high intensity conflict environment and doing all those things they need to do to fight and win.” In exercise Saber Junction 18, the 173rd Airborne Brigade faced off against the Joint Multinational Readiness Center’s Opposing Forces augmented by multinational partners. Opposing Forces simulate enemy forces for training rotations. “It gives us an opportunity to function against a f ree-thinking enemy and validate our training path and find any gaps in our training plans,” said Capt. Kyle Hooley, company commander of Able Company, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade. Esper presented the Secretary of the Army Coin to 173rd Airborne Soldiers during the visit. He highlighted the dedication of the Soldiers present and how he was in their shoes 25 years ago as a rifle company commander in the 173rd Airborne Brigade. “It’s great to be back,” said Esper. “This is my old unit when I commanded in the 1990s. I trained at Hohenfels a few times. It brings back some old memories and it’s good to be around Soldiers, particularly Soldiers who are out in the field camouflaged up and working hard, fighting the opposing forces out here.”
U.S. Army Lt. Col. John A. Morris III, 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment commander, shares his observations about mission readiness and capabilities with Secretary of the Army Dr. Mark T. Esper during Saber Junction 18 at Hohenfels Training Area, Sept. 22.

CMSAF Wright: The Airmen we need must be resilient by Staff Sgt. Alyssa Gibson Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs
Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright gives his speech on resiliency during the Air Force Association Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Md., Sept. 19. Photo by Staff Sgt. Rusty Frank
In order to win tomorrow’s war, defend the homeland and remain a safe and secure nuclear deterrent, Airmen must be welltrained, well-led, agile and resilient, according to the Air Force’s most senior enlisted leader. Building upon Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson’s discussion of the “Air Force We Need” and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein’s assessment of how to use the advantages of multi-domain operations, Wright said the “Airmen We Need” must be well trained, well led and agile in addition to resilient. “If the foundation of readi-
ness is training, then the core of what makes an Airman more lethal is resilience,” said Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth O. Wright during the Air Force Association’s Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Md., Sept. 19. “I used to think [resilience] was the ability to bounce back, but I now see it as the ability to move through the hardships, the pain, the fear and the suffering.” The poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley has become a mantra of Wright’s, as it serves as a reminder that one controls their own fate. Though Air Force leaders have the “tremendous responsibility” of ensuring the right resources, programs and leaders are in place to build and maintain resilient Airmen and families, the CMSAF charged each Airman with investing in their own destiny. Over the past 18 months, Wright traveled across the globe
and met real-world examples of this level of resilience… describing them as fascinating, humbling and inspiring. “Our heroes, didn’t ask for cancer, didn’t ask to be blown up, didn’t ask to be born with debilitating diseases,” Wright said. “They weren’t responsible for their situations, but they were all responsible for how they dealt with it. Responsibility offers power; it allows you to become pioneers not victims. You get to forge your own path — that’s more challenging. It’s more difficult, but much more rewarding.” Wright said Airmen must start with themselves if they want to become more resilient, stronger when facing adversity and unconquerable. “No one escapes pain, escapes fear, escapes suffering,” he said. “Yet from pain can come wisdom, from fear can come courage and from suffering can come strength — if we have the virtue of resilience.”

German Forces soldiers train on Ramstein Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Kristof J. Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
Sixteen soldiers from the German Forces in Cologne, Germany, received training by U.S. Airmen and 86th Airlift Wing Host Nation employees on a C-17 Globemaster aircraft on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 13. The visit furthers training of German loadmasters who frequently work with C-17 Globemasters and C-5 Galaxy aircraft. “In the flight readiness of the Federal Ministry of Defense, my soldiers regularly handle C-17 Globemasters of different nations, but primarily those of the U.S. Air Force,” said German Forces Lt. Col. Ingo Joerz, German Forces Airfield Squadron commander. “In order to be able to guarantee a high quality of handling without delay in the future, I consider it very beneficial for both parties to instruct my personnel in the special features of the cargo handling of the C-130J Super Hercules, C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster.”
U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Alex Rose, 721st Aerial Port Squadron Ramp Service supervisor gives a tour inside a C-17 Globemaster aircraft on Ramstein Air Base, Sept. 13. These kinds of engagements mutually benefit the U.S. and Germany by further establishing cooperation and transparency between the two countries.
U.S. Air Force loadmasters provided all-encompassing instruction on cargo handling for the C-17 Globemaster and answered questions about the aircraft and its capabilities. The German loadmasters received a tour of Ramstein Air Base and a mission brief from the German Support Unit in addition to their aircraft training. These exercises mutually benefit the U.S. and Germany by further estab-
lishing cooperation and transparency between the two countries. “Host Nation relations at a local level are very good and stable,” said Roberto Manuel Saldanha da Costa, 86th AW Host Nation office chief on Ramstein Air Base. “The U.S. military is actively engaged at all levels to communicate with local representatives and be transparent through multiple media channels.”
86th AW Host Nation office takes special measures to ensure cooperation and transparency between Ramstein Air Base military personnel and German citizens through initiatives such as advertising and enhancing the German-American Community Office as an access point, advertising the official base tour program and through enhancement of the Grassroots program.
October is Energy Action Month by Airman 1st Class Ariel Leighty 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The month of October is recognized as Energy Action Month throughout U.S. government agencies including the Air Force. Energy Action Month is a reminder of the importance energy plays in conserving Air Force resources. Throughout the month, the Air Force highlights ways Airmen and their families can make more energyconscious decisions. Ramstein Energy Management said these include turning off lights, limiting the time vehicles idle, shutting down unnecessary appliances and equipment when not in use, conserving water, and observing energy efficient behavior on the job. Ramstein Energy Management said practicing energy-aware choices both on and off base in the KMC can have a significant impact on reducing energy demand such as: • Conserving water by restricting your showers to seven liters per minute. • Using 220-volt appliances instead of transformers or adapters. • Switching from incandescent bulbs to LED or other energy efficient lighting. • Using natural sunlight instead of conventional lighting.
Graphic by Ryan Philbrick
• Cutting heating costs by closing blinds and avoiding any obstructions near the heater as objects near heaters absorb and block warmth meaning more energy and time is needed to warm a room.
By making small changes to daily routines, the cost of water and electricity could see a significant reduction for both the service members and tax payers. To submit innovative ideas and
observations contact the local energy department on Ramstein at 480-3723 or 06371-47-3723. For more information please go to https://www.saf ie.hq.af.mil/ EnergyActionMonth/.

Air Force assists Army during Saber Junction 18 by Staff Sgt. Jimmie Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force aircraft engines roar through the air as pilots look for the marked drop zone; in the back of the aircraft U.S. Army paratroopers, along with paratroopers from four other nations, eagerly await for their signal to appear above the cargo door. “GO! GO! GO,” a jumpmaster screams as the jump light changes from red to green. This may only be training, but the performances of each military branch and service member is integral to the success of the missions during Saber Junction 18. Saber Junction 18 is part of an annual exercise series, and is a U.S. Army in Europe-directed exercise designed to assess the readiness of the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade to execute unified land operations in a joint, combined environment and to promote interoperability with participating allies and
partner nations. While USAREUR led the charge during the exercise, U.S. Air Forces in Europe provided the airlift capability with C-130H Hercules and a C-17 Globemaster to assist the Army in completing their training objectives. “The Air Force has been a huge help,” said U.S. Army Maj. J. Christopher Giorgi, Saber Junction 18 lead planner. “You can’t do joint force entry without the airlift component.” With aircraft support f rom USAFE, thousands of troops from the 173rd dropped within a few hours to kick off a large scale exercise. “Airmen have been integrated since day one of planning to assist,” said Giorgi. “With this integration, we can put an air brigade behind enemy lines within 18 hours. I don’t believe many others can do that.” The U.S. will be exercising alongside 19 ally and partner nations to increase operational efficiency.

LRMC miracle patient making strides by Kathryn Gifford Landstuhl Regional Medical Center The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center team witnessed what some would call miracles this summer as a severely wounded patient cheated death at every turn and did what no one could have imagined. One year later, he continues to amaze LRMC medical staff. Iveri Buadze, a Senior Lieutenant in the Republic of Georgia armed forces, was leading a team of Georgian soldiers with his Marine advisors on Sept. 6, 2017, as they visually inspected vehicles prior to entering Bagram Air Field in Bagram, Afghanistan. A suicide bomber on a motorcycle in the line of vehicles detonated his explosives and Buadze sustained life-threatening injuries. After multiple surgeries in Bagram, Buadze was sent to the U.S. Army medical center in Germany four days later, along with the two fellow Georgian soldiers and two U.S. Marines who were also wounded in the blast.

No expectations from medical staff According to Buadze’s neurosurgeon at LRMC, Army Maj. George Rymarczuk, Buadze arrived with multiple major injuries, including significant damage to his right leg and arm and penetrating trauma to his neck, chest and abdomen. The force of the explosion was so strong that surgeons in Bagram had to remove a portion of his skull to relieve pressure from swelling and bleeding. Buadze later lost his right eye and right leg from below the knee. “He had some of the more severe injuries I’ve seen in quite a while,” said Rymarczuk. “I did not think he was
going to survive or, if he did, I didn’t expect him to have any semblance of a good quality of life.” This was just the first of many medical predictions Buadze proved wrong. While he remained in a medical coma for two months, his body’s natural healing systems got to work and the LRMC medical team remained committed to Buadze’s recovery. Despite the coma, Buadze’s medical care would not be easy as he also had head trauma, a brain injury, multiple broken bones, infection in his wounds, liver failure, amputation, extreme blood loss and more. Even as the team fought for Buadze’s survival, they also prepared for the worst by discussing the most likely outcomes with the Georgian medical liaison and Buadze’s family in Georgia over phone calls and video chats. Buadze’s brother came to LRMC as quickly as he could. When he arrived, Amiran Buadze, an artillery platoon sergeant in the Georgian armed forces, stood at the foot of his brother’s bed and said a special prayer. Through an interpreter, Amiran Buadze shared that he was praying with his brother on Sept. 21, the day the Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates the birth of the Virgin Mary. “I asked Holy Maria for Iveri to get better,” said Amiran Buadze. While Amiran was praying at the foot of the bed, he noticed that his brother opened and closed his eye and moved his mouth slightly. Army Capt. Hillary Battles, an intensive care registered nurse, also remembers the days when things started to turn around for Buadze. “After Amiran’s visit, we started hearing groans and seeing muscle twitches,” said Battles. “The doctors initially thought it was just reflexes. Then his remaining eye started moving as we walked around the room, as if he could see us. In no time, he started to really respond to us, nodding his head and eventually he even talking, saying yes or no when we asked him questions.” Buadze surprised everyone again when he started speaking not only his native language, but also English and Russian, languages he had previously learned. Spark of life leads to rehab “I was very sick. I could do almost nothing for two months. I almost died,” Buadze said in slow, precise English. “But when I first moved my right hand and leg, the nurses were excited,” he remembered. “They could not believe this!” Once the intensive care nursing team noticed Buadze moving, they encour-
aged more aggressive physical and occupational therapy and the clinic teams jumped on board immediately. When Buadze had been in a coma, physical therapists went to his bedside to perform passive range of motion exercises to keep his body limber and prevent secondary complications like bedsores. Once they learned that Buadze was beginning to move, they changed tactics to help him continue to progress. “At LRMC, we really aren’t equipped here for long term care like that,” said Petra Wine, an intensive care registered nurse. Strategically located near Ramstein, LRMC is the largest American medical facility outside the United States and part of the hospital’s mission is to receive wounded, injured and ill U.S. service members, government employees and contractors serving in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as patients from NATO Allied nations and partner countries like Georgia. With a 99 percent survival rate, the LRMC team has successfully treated and returned more than 15,000 troops back to forward combat theaters. The primary role of critical combat care at LRMC is to either treat and remedy the patient’s medical concerns and return them to their units, or stabilize and transfer them to the United States for further care. Most patients only stay at LRMC for two or three days; the long-term rehabilitation that Buadze required is not something that LRMC typically provides. “Our physical and occupational therapy staff have been so innovative,” said Wine. “PT has been adapting equipment and inventing exercises to help [Buadze] progress. OT created hand grips for him, adapted eating utensils and they have been manually making things that a place set up for long-term rehab, like Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, would normally have on hand.” Maria Duluc, a physical therapy assistant at LRMC, said she has never had a patient with such a strong drive or so few complaints about his pain, although she knew he must have felt it. “He would say to me, ’You are my commander, whatever you tell me to do, I’m ready,’” said Duluc. Each time she asked Buadze if he wanted to do more exercises, he would typically grin and reply, “Why not?” Sunshine follows dark days Buadze recalled the emotional roller coaster as he began to fully understand the extent of his injuries. “[The big] surprise was my leg. I didn’t know I had lost my leg,” said Buadze.
“When I started bike exercises and saw my leg, then I knew.” Things turned around for Buadze when Air Force critical care technician Staff Sgt. Antwan Williams motivated and encouraged him with stories about innovative prosthetics other amputees use to regain quality of life. “I felt angry,” said Buadze. “Now I feel good.” Easy, breezy, lemon squeezy From passive exercises while Buadze was in a coma, to helping him regain the ability to sit upright in a wheelchair, the physical therapy team pushed him to keep progressing. “Between the PT team and [Buadze’s] own strong will, now he is walking in less than six months,” said Wine as she watched Buadze take slow and steady steps down the ICU hallway. “I didn’t even think he would walk and look at him now!” said Duluc. “[LRMC has] very good therapy specialists. They helped me every day to work out in the gym and I keep progressing,” said Buadze during a physical therapy session in April. “First light, then harder and harder. And you saw today, my walking. Easy breezy lemon squeezy! I learned that saying here.” Focus on the future Buadze explained that he was pushing so hard to progress because he has big plans for his future; future challenges are seen as opportunities to get stronger. “I have to start walking on two legs, one that is a prosthetic leg. I have to be able to run. That will be the last step,” said Buadze. “I think that then I will be finished and I will go back to Georgia.” Family is important to Buadze. He said is looking forward to getting back to his family and friends and plans one day to marry and have children. “I have two nieces and nephews in Georgia,” said Buadze. “They know that when I get back home, I can walk with them.” Buadze is well on his way. He transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and has already achieved the first of his many goals: to walk with a prosthetic leg. The team at WRNMMC will continue the progress that the LRMC team helped Buadze begin. A team mentality “The whole team was vital to his recovery,” said Battles, one of Buadze’s intensive care nurses at LRMC. “Everyone came together to help take care of him.” One ICU administrative assistant brought Buadze sausages that he liked
September 28, 2018 and were easy for him to hold. Other people throughout the hospital heard he liked a certain type of candy bar and soon he had enough to share with visitors. Someone from another ward brought in a Georgian flag to decorate his room. “I remember the day our housekeeper started talking to him in Russian early on, and he responded,” Battles recalled. “I really think she did a lot for his motivation; she was such a comfort to him. She’s a phenomenal housekeeper and a phenomenal person.” While the dedication of the LRMC staff was recognized by Buadze, many on his care team indicated that his presence and public display of fortitude and resiliency also touched their lives as well. Those who worked closely with him on a daily basis called him by his first name, and he did the same with them. “The central piece here is family,” said
Kaiserslautern American Battles. “Here at LRMC, we all worked together to take care of [Buadze]. The American Marines and the Georgian military working side by side and learning each other’s language are like a family too.” LRMC’s team of Army and Air Force personnel also includes a small cohort of Navy, Marines Corps and special operations service members who make up the liaison office that transitions, orients and tracks wounded, ill and injured troops from forward operations. Because Buadze’s unit was working alongside the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, the Marines at LRMC embraced him as their own. “Soon after he woke up from the coma, he was able to recognize the uniform,” said Sgt. Merrick Morin, a Marine liaison at LRMC. “When he saw us, he would smile and say, ’ I was with the
Page 11
Marines.’ I would happily fight alongside [Buadze] any day.” Many LRMC staff were thinking of Buadze this September on his Alive Day, a common phrase in the military that celebrates the anniversary of the day a service member cheated death on the battlefield. “The moon is the limit for him,” Wine said before changing her mind. “No, nothing limits him. Every time I have a bad day I think of him. Overall, he was so positive. Now he can walk and even use his prosthetic leg.” Advice from Buadze “Life is very strange. I want to say, never give up. Keep progressing and life is good. My bad health is not finished but I will continue to fight. I will show everyone that nothing is impossible,” said Buadze.

Honoring Gold Star mothers and families Sept. 30 Story and photo by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Office Mary Aguirre-Garza is the kind of mom who can’t help but to gush about her two children — especially Nathaniel — whom she calls “the sparkle in my eyes.” Her son, Cpl. Nathaniel A. Aguirre, was an airborne combat medic with the 4th Infantry Division, who was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, Oct. 22, 2006. Mary’s loss and sacrifice — and that of thousands of others who lost service members in combat will be honored the last Sunday of September on Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, Sept. 30. A Mother’s Story Nathaniel was an ordinary kid who loved adventure said Mary, who works for U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz as an outreach services specialist for Parent Central Services and also serves in the community as a volunteer for the USO and Daenner Kaserne chapel. Her son was very confident and social, embodying a gift for making people open up and talk wherever he went. When he would go to parties, “by the end of the evening he would have talked to every person in the room,” Mary laughed. “He was like a junior toast master — never afraid to speak to a crowd.” He was also an active member of the Boy Scouts and was an avid rock climber. “Rock climbing was an expensive hobby for a 16-year-old, so Nathaniel came up with the idea of volunteer-

ing at the rock-climbing gym,” she said. “So, he volunteered and climbed for free. He even became a belaying instructor, and when the Boy Scout or Girl Scout groups came to the gym, he could be their instructor.” A Call To Duty For many years, the Boy Scouts fulfilled his yearning for adventure and public service, but after the tragic events of 9/11, Nathaniel wanted to do more. He wanted to serve his country. So, Mary and her husband, Louis, gave permission for their only son to join the U.S. Army Reserves at 17 while still attending high school. After graduation, he enlisted. “This was not the future we wanted for him. We wanted Nathaniel to go to college,” the Gold Star mother recalled. “But at 17, we didn’t want to take his dreams away. So, we supported his wishes.”
After basic training, Nathaniel became a medic assigned to Bravo Company, 168th Medical Battalion at USAG Yongsan, Korea, and later served at Fort Hood, Texas, with Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th ID. Dec. 12, 2005 — the day after his 21st birthday, Corporal Aguirre deployed to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. “We felt excited for him, but somber and unsure. Afterwards, we were fearful, because on the news there was a lot of fighting and deaths in Iraq,” she said. Star’s Meaning Nathaniel served eight months in Iraq before he flew home for his two-week rest and recuperation. Days before his arrival, the Aguirre family began decorating their home with banners and flags, when a new neigh-
bor from across the street approached Mary. After they chatted for a while, they realized both had children who were deployed in combat zones. “My neighbor noticed that I didn’t have a Blue Star Banner, but I didn’t know what that was,” she recalled. So, her neighbor explained that a Blue Star Banner was given to families of deployed service members in combat locations. She also mentioned that families display a Gold Star Banner in the event their military loved one dies in combat. Tragic Loss On Oct. 22, 2006, Mary heard the dreaded knock on her door. It was a sound that preceded tragic news that would change her life forever. “After they told us that Nathaniel had died, the only thing I can remember saying was, ‘I need a Gold Star banner now,’” Mary said tearfully. “That was the day I became a Gold Star Mother.” Gold Star mothers and family members in the Rheinland-Pfalz area will be recognized for their sacrifices at an annual event in their honor — but one seat will be noticeably empty. This year, Mary will be visiting Nathaniel’s burial site as well as visiting her family and friends in Texas. “It was a combination of many things that made my son who he was,” she said proudly. “I see myself as a mother wearing two hats — I wear a hat being Melissa’s mother and I wear a Gold Star Mother’s hat for Nathaniel. I will always be a mother of two — my daughter is in Texas and my son is in heaven. I will never forget that.”

Continued from front page of Properties section You will have to provide the following: • Proof of income (Einkommensnachweis). Submitting copies of your retirement pay is usually sufficient. • Proof of health insurance (Krankenversicherung). If you remain covered through the U.S. system, then submit proof of this. Otherwise, you will have to acquire health insurance on the German economy. • Passports and photos of you and each family member.
If you are married and your spouse is not German, the above items are also required of your spouse. You will also need to submit a marriage certificate, regardless of your spouse’s nationality. It is advisable to start early on these things, however, as long as you have SOFA status, you cannot start this process. When you lose your status, you will be considered a U.S. tourist who just entered the country. After this, you can stay in Germany for 90 days without needing a status. As soon as you lose the SOFA status, you should begin the process of applying for a residence permit. Make
an appointment at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). Call 0631-365-2245/2584 for the Kaiserslautern City Administration or 06317105-201/401 for the County Administration. Take the above items to the appropriate office. Your documents will be reviewed. There is no fixed time for the process. It can be a matter of two weeks or longer. Therefore, it is highly recommended you begin the process as soon as you lose your SOFA status. Usually, a residence permit must be renewed annually. Also, you will not receive German
health benefits if you do not pay into the German health care system through employment. Therefore, you will only receive a residence permit if you already have your own health care. If you do end up working on the economy, you will
then pay for German health insurance, which entitles you to receive German health benefits. There is no specific job you will need to acquire in order to stay in Germany. Most retirees have sufficient income through their pension.

You found the perfect house for retirement in Germany. Now what? By Find-It-Guide.com
Photo by Andy Dean Photography / Shutterstock.com
You have been searching for the perfect house for your retirement and you finally found it! It is just the right size for your new life after work and you are ready to pull the trigger on it. Before that next great leap, there are some things you will need to do. If you wish to retire in Germany and are no longer associated with the U.S. military, you will lose your SOFA status and consequently will become a tourist. A regular U.S. citizen can stay in Germany for 90 days without requiring a residence permit. You will fall under this category as soon as you retire. What you have to do is apply for a residence permit (Aufenthaltsgenehmigung) at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde). If you live in the City of Kaiserslautern (city includes: Dansenberg, Einsiedlerhof, Erfenbach with Lampertsmühle and Stockborn, Erlenbach, Hohenecken with Espensteig, Mölschbach, Morlautern with Waldhof, and Siegelbach) then the office in Rathaus-Nord, Benzinoring 1, is the appropriate office for you. If you live in Kaiserslautern County (county includes: Bann, Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, Enkenbach-Alsenborn, Erzenhausen, Eulenbis, Fischbach, Frankelbach, Frankenstein, Gerhardsbrunn, Hauptstuhl, Heiligenmoschel, Hirschhorn/Pfalz, Hochspeyer, Hütschenhausen, Katzweiler, Kindsbach, Kollweiler, Kottweiler-Schwanden, Krickenbach, Lambsborn, Landstuhl, Langwieden, Linden, Mackenbach, Martinshöhe, Mehlbach, Mehlingen, Mittelbrunn, Neuhemsbach, Niederkirchen, Niedermohr, Oberarnbach, Olsbrücken, Otterbach, Otterberg, Queidersbach, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Reichenbach-Steegen, Rodenbach, Schallodenbach, Schneckenhausen, Schopp, Schwedelbach, Sembach, Steinwenden, Stelzenberg, Sulzbachtal, Trippstadt, Waldleiningen, and Weilerbach), then you would need to contact the Foreigners’ Registration Office in the County Administration (Kreisverwaltung), Lauterstr. 8. Rheinfels Castle From the Time of Thrones
The castle ruins of Rheinfels sits looking out on the enchanting Rhein River. Soaked in history, this mighty fortress was built in 1245 and stood strong in sieges from attacking armies. Today it awaits you to explore deep into its ruins. Only thing you need to bring is your imaginations of dragons, thrones, kings and knights! The History The Rheinfels Castle was built by Count Diether V von Katzenelnbogen originally to protect the tax collectors from the town below, St Goar. It then developed to be the one of the most massive fortresses in the Middle Rhine region.
bakery where a maiden would buy her bread and a luxury hotel where a noble knight would spend a night. What to Expect Present day the courtyard has a very popular gift shop. Here kids can can suit up and buy a wooden shield and sword for the dragons that they might face once crossing into the castle walls. Okay, adults can wear the armor as well if they wish!

In 1692 the castle was the only fortress left on the Rhine that could defend itself against the French attacks that were led by Louis XIV. The castle could not defend itself anymore and it was handed over without a struggle to the French Revolutionary army in 1796. Sadly, that is when the castle and the exterior walls were blown up. Because of its tumultuous history, now visitors can explore the castles labyrinth of trenches, tunnels and towers. When entering the castle, you first walk into the lively castle courtyard
The first view you come to before the actual admissions window is a breathtaking sight! Right away you can understand why the Count chose this powerful spot on the Rhein and why others would want to have it! I could stay there all day and watch the boats go up and down the river, but I had castle ruins to explore!
had to give everything they had in order to defend themselves. These ruins still are strong and powerful. We walked into the castle’s cellar, which use to store food and wine since it stays so cool. Today it is used for torch lit weddings and events! It was incredible to be able to touch the original doors and see the peak holes that were used to see if it was a friend or foe knocking at the door. Then you can walk into the narrow arched walkways they would enter. (If those walls could talk!) Next we went into the mines! It is advised to bring sturdy walking shoes and flashlights for the dark parts of mines and tunnels. The mines were fascinating and seemed endless! At times they are very dark and were a tight fit. I try to imagine what it was like for a guard on night watch roaming in the silenced dark mines.

Entering the archway transports you to another time, a time where there were wars for thrones and power. This was a time when they
You can look through one of the slits and see how hard it would have been to shoot an arrow through the crack to hit your enemy. Then from the mines you can climb high up on a platform or a tower and soak in the beautiful view again. There are many courtyards to be discovered while following the provided map. You will even come across
a guillotine and an original castle well. Thanks to all of the horror movies I have seen, I couldn’t decide on which was creepier.

The Rheinfels Castle ruins is a magical place to visit and explore with your family. You are literally stepping into history with a real understanding of what it felt like living in this mighty castle while still enjoying the pure beauty of the Germany’s Middle Rhein valley. Admission cost for adults is 5 Euro and 2, 50 Euro for children 6-14.
