Our instructors will initiate the use of characters to connect physical, emotional and verbal comprehension. Your child will explore spatial relationships, social interaction, cooperation, environment, voice, body and movement as we consider how to help an audience understand our story. RISING STARS (AGES 3–4) This is a class for our youngest dancers that incorporates creative movement, dancing with props, and storytelling to introduce and develop motor skills, performance comprehension, and confidence. Students will work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening, and working with others and share an informally choreographed piece with families and friends on the last day of class. Your child’s first independent dance class! CREATE THE DRAMA (PREK–K) Using children’s stories ranging from familiar fairy tales to modern day youth literature, your child will learn the basics of presenting for an audience, improvising, and acting in character. A fun acting class tailored to young school-aged children, this class begins the crossover from creative drama to dramatic arts. Students will work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening, and working with others and share an informally staged piece with families and friends on the last day of class. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
BROADWAY BABY (PREK–K) A magical introduction to the world of song, dance, and make-believe! Students will explore music and movement through guided activities in a playful and structured environment designed for the imagination and rooted in musical theater. Props, costume accessories, and themes will enhance exploration and movement. Students will work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening, and working with others and share an informally staged piece with families and friends on the last day of class. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. TIPPY TAPPY TOES (PREK–K) Our young tappers will learn basic steps and terminology of the Broadway tap dance style and improve coordination through the use of musical theater songs in a safe, fun, and positive environment. Students will work on classroom skills such as following directions, listening, and working with others and share an informally choreographed piece with families and friends on the last day of class.

GRADES K–5 As they grow, children need to stretch their imaginations. Did you know that between the ages of 6 and 8 your child‘s physical, social, and mental skills are developing at a wildfire pace? Our classes are designed to cultivate this stage of the childhood experience: The strengthening sense of self and community. We will also provide practice at developing skills in cooperation and listening.
THE ACTOR’S TRACK ACTING UP! (GRADES 1–3)* One of the most important classes a young performer can take! Journey with ATMTC through the process of acting: a professional teaching artist will guide participants using creative drama techniques employing the basics of acting, improvisation, and character development. The class culminates in an informal presentation of the characters and stories the class created during the semester. No prerequisite is required.
MINI PLAY: FROZEN, THE SNOW QUEEN (GRADES 1–3) (WINTER SEMESTER) No audition required. Join Elsa, The Snow Queen, her sister, Anna, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven as they explore the movie based on the famous story by Hans Christian Anderson , its characters, plotline and sequence; working together to create their own improvised theater piece! This class culminates in an informal performance that is guided by literature and created by our students.
MINI PLAY: MARY POPPINS (GRADES 1–3) (FALL SEMESTER) No audition required. Join the Banks family, their nanny Mary Poppins, and the magic umbrella as they explore the movie based on the famous book by P.L. Travers, its characters, plotline and sequence; working together to create their own improvised theater piece! This class culminates in an informal performance that is guided by literature and created by our students.
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE (GRADES 3–5)* The ultimate “choose your own adventure” class! Using their ideas and creativity, students will learn about the components that go into a play, devise a plot, write a script, cast, rehearse, and ultimately present an informal presentation of their own original theater piece for friends and family on the final night of class. No pre-requisite is required.
THE MUSICAL THEATRE TRACK SING, DANCE, ACT!* The best way to introduce your young thespian to the genre of musical theater! This class will include stage performance basics, vocal instruction, and simple Broadway dance combinations by creating and using age-appropriate musical scenes. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Broadway Prep.) BROADWAY PREP (GRADES 1–3)* Broadway Prep, the second-level continuation course of Sing, Dance, Act!, delves further into the craft of musical theater performance by teaching students to convey emotion and character in song, scene and movement. Working on developing these skills individually and as an ensemble, students will learn to analyze scripts and songs for performance, learn correct terminology, and illustrate an understanding of musical theater basics. Pre-requisite of 2 semesters of Sing, Dance, Act! is required, or by instructor permission. BRIDGE TO BROADWAY (GRADES 3–5) Bridge to Broadway, the third installment course of the Sing, Dance, Act! series, offers continued training in musical theater performance for students in 3rd through 5th grades. The class includes more specific and challenging instruction in the three areas of musical theater performance. Lessons include extension of range and character development through physical and vocal exploration, the formal study of ballet and jazz, musical theatre audition preparation, lyrical and text analysis, improvisation techniques and the continued study of ensemble. Annual Enrollment, only as classwork information develops throughout the year. Pre-requisite of at least 2 semesters of Broadway Prep is required, or by instructor permission.
SINGING FOR THE STAGE (GRADES 1–3) This introductory vocal course teaches young students the fundamentals of healthy singing and musicianship. Through vocal exercises and musical theater songs, students will work on tone production, breath support, and basic music theory. LIGHTSABER ADVENTURES (GRADES 2–4) Join a professional stage combat instructor as (s)he instructs our young Padawans in the ways of the Force. From simple tasks to challenging missions, the Padawans learn such important skills as awareness of one’s surroundings, cooperation in crisis and respect for one ’s self and for others equally. This class will teach lessons in safety, focus, spatial awareness, teamwork and self-discipline all within a safe framework of basic stage combat movement. IMPORTANT NOTE: All students will be expected to adhere to specific classroom safety guidelines. This workshop has been created to provide parents with practical, solid advice to benefit their child and assist them in navigating the world of professional theater. Private singing lessons are taught with care for developing voice with a focus on resonance breath control, intonation, and development of high and low registers. Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family. With imaginative sets and costumes, and a host of over-the-top roles there’s a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story. Join ATMTC Academy and this unforgettable crew of outrageously kooky characters as we take this hilarious musical journey to the Adventure Theatre MTC main stage in Glen Echo, MD! Millie is looking to start a new and exciting life for herself, but her picture perfect plan doesn’t go exactly as she expected. Based on the 1967 Academy Awardwinning film, Thoroughly Modern Millie takes you back to the height of the Jazz Age in New York City, when “modern” included bobbing your hair, raising your hemline, entering the workforce, and rewriting the rules of love. Filled with tappin’ flappers, dashing men, and even a dragonlady villainess, Thoroughly Modern Millie sure has it all! After travelling to Atlanta, GA to present 15 minutes of the show for Broadway professionals at the Junior Theater Festival over MLK, Jr. weekend, our talented cast will then return home to perform on the ATMTC main stage in Glen Echo, MD. PROGRAM Musical Theater Training for Future Broadway Stars “If you know what you want, then you go and you find it, and you get it.” –Stephen Sondheim The Pre-Professional Program prepares committed and gifted musical theater students in grades 4–12 for college and/ or a professional career. Led by a highly qualified faculty, the Pre-Professional Program curriculum provides students with inclusive training in singing, dancing, acting, and performance. Each Saturday, from September through May with a January break, students will receive five hours (Grades 8–12) or four hours (Grades 4–7) of specialized training in the three core areas of musical theater study and receive additional exclusive performance and educational opportunities throughout the year. Serious, talented, and aspiring musical theater students in Grades 4–12 are accepted into the program by audition only.

ACTING ACTING I Students learn a variety of approaches, methods, and acting techniques with concentrated work in improvisation, character development, and scene work. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Acting Technique II.) ACTING II In Acting Technique II, students learn a variety of approaches, methods and acting techniques with concentrated work in, monologue study, stage direction, script analysis, and critique. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique I is required, or by instructor permission. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Actor’s Workshop) ACTORS WORKSHOP III: ONE ACT/SCENE STUDY In Actors Workshop III, students will sharpen their talent through the process of rehearsal and presentation of scene work and a one-act piece, allowing them to identify acting habits that will inhibit growth in textual work, character development, technical polish and interplay. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique II is required, or by instructor permission. (Once advanced to level III, students will continue to work a different play each semester, and in the Spring, culminating in The Academy Acting Showcase to be performed at the Glen Echo Main stage on Thursday, May 4th, 2017.) (Annual Enrollment encouraged)
DANCE BALLET I Ballet I is for the novice or beginner student. Core body strength, arms, and correct turn-out based on a student’s anatomy and muscular development are emphasized at the barre. Center work is focused on the basics of adagio (slow controlled combination), preparation for pirouettes, simple turns across the floor, petit allegro, and grand allégro. Before advancing to Ballet II, students must be able to execute these basic exercises. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. BALLET II Ballet II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Ballet technique. Students must audition for placement at this level. Ballet II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced turns and step combinations. Turn-out based on individual ability and strength continues to be emphasized along with posture and core strength. The student is introduced to complex rhythms, pirouettes, and jumps. Pre-requisite of Ballet II is required, or by instructor permission.

BALLET/JAZZ COMBO I Ballet/Jazz Combo I is for the novice or beginner student. The combination course allows students to gain a fundamental knowledge of and preparation for the dance forms of both ballet and jazz. Classes consist of learning the standard placement of feet and arms, basic terminology, barre exercises, floor work, and simple jazz combinations. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
BALLET/JAZZ COMBO II Ballet/Jazz Combo II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in both Ballet and Jazz technique. Ballet/Jazz Combo II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced turns and jazz combinations. After two semesters of study, students are encouraged to study each form separately. Pre-requisite of Ballet/Jazz Combo I is required, or by instructor permission. CONTEMPORARY I Contemporary I is for the novice or beginner student. Contemporary dance is a fusion of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and many modern dance styles and is integrated in contemporary Broadway dance. Classes consist of barre exercises, floor work, and various combinations of multiple dance forms. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. CONTEMPORARY II Contemporary II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Contemporary technique. Contemporary II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced combinations. Pre-requisite of Contemporary I is required, or by instructor permission. JAZZ I Jazz I is for the novice or beginner student. Jazz is a prominent form incorporated in Broadway dance. Curriculum includes intensive strengthening, stretching techniques, across the floor combinations, leaps, and turns. Students will gain knowledge of terminology, flexibility, and an understanding of Broadway Jazz technique. No prerequisite or placement is required for this course. JAZZ II Jazz II is for the intermediate student who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Jazz technique. Jazz II continues to hone and strengthen technique in the form, with the addition of more advanced technique, and step combinations. Continued improvement of core strength and flexibility, will be of focus. Pre-requisite of Jazz I is required, or by instructor permission.
JAZZ III Jazz III is for the advanced student who is able to master complex movements and combinations. These are the highest level and most advanced students prepping for professional or collegiate study. Classes include intensive strengthening warm-ups, stretching techniques to elongate and encourage muscle strength, across the floor movements, leaps, turns and center combination work. Students will gain increasing knowledge of Jazz terminology, greater strength and flexibility, and an understanding of ever-evolving musical theater Jazz technique. Pre-requisite of Jazz II is required, or by instructor permission. TAP I Tap I is for the novice or beginner student. “Broadway Tap” is the chosen sub-style taught by ATMTC, which incorporates upper body and use of arms in addition to a focus on percussive rhythm and footwork. Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. TAP II Tap II is for the advanced beginner student who has acquired a basic vocabulary and skill set and is developing technique in the form. Advanced, intricate footwork and combinations are studied. Pre-requisite of Tap I is required, or by instructor permission. TAP III Tap III is for the intermediate tap student. Student possesses strong technique and is able to master more complex combinations. Pre-requisite of Tap II is required, or by instructor permission. TAP IV Tap IV is for the most advanced level of student. These are the highest level students prepping for professional or collegiate study. Pre-requisite of Tap III is required, or by instructor permission.
VOICE ACTING THE SONG (GRADES 4–7) This introductory vocal course teaches students the fundamentals of healthy singing and musicianship. Through vocal exercises and musical theater songs, students will work on tone production, breath support, and basic music theory. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. MUSIC THEORY I Developing literacy in music is a key part of a rounded education for musical theater performers. Without knowledge of notation it is impossible for musicians to access their repertoire with ease or to rehearse together. This introductory course will acquaint students with the fundamentals of music theory: Pitch, Staff Notation, the Piano Keyboard, Modes, Major Scales and Key Signatures. Students will need to purchase and bring to every class required course materials including a roll up desktop keyboard and headphones/ear buds. See online registration for list of required materials. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
MUSIC THEORY II The second-level continuation course of Music Theory I delves further into the craft of music theory covering topics such as Intervals, Minor Keys and Scales, Triads, Seventh Chords, Roman Numeral Analysis, Meter, Rhythm, and Melodic Dictation. ACADEMY FACULTY ANGELA INGRAM (Ballet/Jazz Faculty) is a native of Pittsburgh, PA and began her dance career at the age of nine at Ken and Jean Dance Studio with the Dance Masters of American studying ballet, jazz, tap, and Hawaiian. Her passion for dance and movement led her to study intensively with many greats such as Luigi, Alvin Ailey, Frank Hatchet and Fred Benjamin. Ms. Ingram is especially attracted to folklore dance and she frequently travels to Brazil and Cuba studying Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban Modern folklore dance, history and culture. NICOLE MARTIN (Ballet Faculty) holds a BFA in Dance Performance from Towson University and has also trained with Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, Dance Institute of Washington, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Ms. Nicole has taught throughout the DC and Baltimore area for over 10 years. Nicole has performed at the Kennedy Center, as well as with Spirit Wings Dance Company, Baltimore Dance Tech, Dance for the Camera Projects , Alvin Ailey American Dance Company and Philadanco Dance Company.
STEVE PRZYBYLSKI (Music Faculty) holds a degree in Musical Theater from Susquehanna University, and previously acted as Musical Director for Wayside Theater. Steve is an accomplished musician, playing over 30 instruments, including banjo and lute. In addition to his musical talents, Steve is the author of Shadow the Raven: Stories of Edgar Allen Poe, and the co-creator, with Warner Crocker, of the Southern Crossroads plays. Local music direction and acting credits include: Next Stop Theater, Flying V, The Arlington Players, Disco Jesus and the Apostles of Funk, Capital Fringe (Directors Award winner).
LESLIE PUTNAM (Head of Early Childhood Education) is a native of North Carolina and a Graduate of the Western Carolina University BFA Musical Theatre Program. She has had the privilege to perform at many wonderful regional theatres and summer stocks all over the U.S. She spent two years working in Virginia as a Resident Actor at Wayside Theatre, and most recently spent the Christmas season with Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, VA in The Sound of Music. She is so excited to be the Head of Early Childhood Education for Adventure Theatre MTC and to be able to teach and share her passion for musical theater.
MELROSE PYNE (Tap Faculty) Melrose is an AMDA trained professional dancer and teacher. Recent credits include: Keegan Theatre: American Idiot and ATMTC: Oliver! (Ensemble), as well as Days of 98 Show (Alice/Dance Captain); E.T.A.P Spain Tour (feature dancer); China’s Cultural Arts Festival (feature dancer); The Producers (Show Girl/Granny); From Presents David Repression to Expression (feature dancer); and The Muse G. Dance Group (dance captain).
