A NOTE FROM THE EDUCATION DIRECTOR It is my pleasure to welcome you to the ATMTC Academy. Our awardwinning and nationally recognized theater education offerings include classes for ages 3-18 in two locations, Historic Glen Echo Park, Glen Echo, MD and Wintergreen Plaza, Rockville, MD: Pre-School Playlabs: cooperative classes for our youngest thespians that focus on social skills, guided play and stretching imaginative muscles (see page 3), Exposure performing arts classes such as Sing, Dance, Act! and Acting 101 for both those grade schoolers who are looking to dip their toes in the performing arts waters, as well as those who want to make this their “number one after school activity” (see page 4–5), A robust offering of technique-based dance, acting, and voice classes for middle school and high schoolers (see page 10–11) as well as our award-winning Student Production programs (see page 8–9), and Our year-long Pre-Professional Program for aspiring musical theater artists in Grades 4–12 (page 13). During the summer months and school breaks, our camps and School’s Out! programs for young students offer an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere. Programs for middle and high school students provide immersive experiences for aspiring theater and musical theater artists to prepare them for college auditions and a life as a performer. All of our Academy classes’ curriculum complement the National Core Arts Standards, providing a challenging outlet for students to develop the skills necessary to be successful performers - including selfdiscipline, teamwork, problem solving, and self-confidence. Many of our former students have gone on to achieve great things: ATMTC Academy Alumni have numerous Broadway, national tour, TV, and film credits. Broadway Baby This is a class for our youngest dancers that incorporates creative movement, dancing with props, and storytelling to introduce and develop motor skills, performance comprehension, and confidence. Your child’s first independent dance class! Create the Drama Using children’s stories ranging from familiar fairy tales to modern day youth literature, your child will learn the basics of presenting for an audience, improvising, and acting in character. A fun acting class tailored to young school-aged children, this class begins the crossover from creative drama to dramatic arts. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. Creative Explorer Come explore new and imaginative worlds with us! Each week, students will go on a new adventure by using their imagination to transform their world and themselves. Learning to work together through dramatic, sensory-oriented play, students explore the worlds of space stations, castles, construction sites, and more!
Explore with Dora & Diego Come on, Vamanos! This journey has all the trappings of the popular toddler television hit: using the map, the backpack and the rule of three tasks, we will dramatize and craft a different journey for your little ones to go on each week through creative and sensory-oriented play! This class incorporates very basic Spanish language, social, cooperation and cognitive learning skills. Princess Sofia and Friends There is so much to see and do in Enchancia with Princess Sofia and her pals! Become a student of the Royal Preparatory Academy each week, role-playing and gaining important knowledge along the way: What makes a real princess is what is on the inside. Each class will integrate dramatic play to explore character qualities such as kindness, generosity, loyalty, honesty, and grace- a royal combination of cooperative learning and fun!

Acting 101 One of the most important classes a young performer can take! Journey with ATMTC through the process of acting: a professional teaching artist will guide participants using creative drama techniques through the basics of acting, improvisation, and character development. The class culminates in an informal presentation of the characters and stories the class created during the semester. No pre-requisite is required.
Sing, Dance, Act! The best way to introduce your young thespian to the genre of musical theater! This class will include stage performance basics, vocal instruction, and simple Broadway dance combinations by creating and using age-appropriate musical scenes. No prerequisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Broadway Prep.)
Broadway Prep Broadway Prep, the second-level continuation course of Sing, Dance, Act!, delves further into the craft of musical theater performance by teaching students to convey emotion and character in song, scene and movement. Working on developing these skills individually and as an ensemble, students will learn to analyze scripts and songs for performance, learn correct terminology, and illustrate an understanding of musical theater basics. Pre-requisite of Sing, Dance, Act! is required, or by instructor permission.
Singing for the Stage This introductory vocal course teaches young students the fundamentals of healthy singing and musicianship. Through vocal exercises and musical theater songs, students will work on tone production, breath support, and basic music theory.
Musical Theater Dance I Musical Theater Dance I is a beginning dance course designed to introduce your young dancer to the dance moves and terminology used in professional musical theater. Under the direction of the instructor, students will learn proper dance terminology, develop dance etiquette, and increase their body awareness as they learn the basics of ballet, jazz, and tap dance. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Musical Theater Dance II.)
Mini Play: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (Fall semester) No audition required This class culminates in an informal performance that is guided by literature and created by our students. Participants will join Snow White, the Wicked Queen and the seven Dwarves as they explore the story, its characters, plotline and sequence; working together to create their own improvised theater piece! Mini Play: Pinocchio (Winter semester) No audition required This class culminates in an informal performance that is guided by literature and created by our students. Participants will join Pinocchio, Gepetto, and the talking cricket as they explore the story, its characters, plotline and sequence; working together to create their own improvised theater piece!
Musical Theater Dance II Musical Theater Dance II the next step in a student’s dance training and, delves further into the crafts of ballet, jazz, and tap by learning the dance basics and terminology used in musical theater and the auditioning process. Under the guidance of their instructor, students will increase their understanding of dance technique, improve their body awareness, and learn to quickly pick up new dance sequences. Pre-requisite of Musical Theater Dance I is required, or by instructor permission.

Private Voice Lessons in Wintergreen Plaza
Private singing lessons are taught with care for developing voice with a focus on resonance breath control, intonation, development of high and low registers. Under the tutelage of a trained vocal instructor, students will explore various genres of repertoire, allowing the student to discover his/ her voice and learn how to prevent damage to the vocal cords. 8-weeks, rolling. Alice in Wonderland, Jr. Grades 4–6 | No Audition Required
First Rehearsal: December 28, 2015 (10 a.m.–4 p.m.) (Rehearsals in Wintergreen Plaza/Tech & Performances in Glen Echo) On a perfect summer day in the park, Alice sees a White Rabbit hurrying by. Curious to know where he is going, she follows him into a dark tunnel, and thus begins the adventure…! Join ATMTC Academy as Alice, the Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit, Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum and the entire cast of Lewis Carroll’s characters perform this musical journey on the ATMTC main stage in Glen Echo, MD! The program begins right after the Christmas holiday, and culminates about a month later: a fully staged production for our younger students! Tuition: $800. Rehearsals begin December 28, 2015. Performances January 23 & 24, 2016.

Omigod, you guys! With last year’s cast of Into the Woods, Jr. coming home from the Junior Theater Festival with Outstanding Male & Female actor awards AND a coveted Outstanding Ensemble Award, the Academy is excited to return to Atlanta with a brand new production this January! Based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde Jr. follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery, and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. After travelling to Atlanta, GA to present 15 minutes of the show for Broadway professionals at the Junior Theater Festival over MLK, Jr. weekend, our talented cast will then return home to perform on the ATMTC main stage in Glen Echo, MD. The program begins right after the Christmas holiday, and culminates about a month later: a whirlwind once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students! Acting Technique I Students learn a variety of approaches, methods, and acting techniques with concentrated work in improvisation, character development, and scene work. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Acting Technique II.) Acting Technique II In Acting Technique II, students learn a variety of approaches, methods and acting techniques with concentrated work in, monologue study, stage direction, script analysis, and critique. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique I is required, or by instructor permission. (Advancement level option after two semesters, or by instructor permission: Actor’s Workshop III) Actors Workshop III: One Act/Scene Study In Actors Workshop III, students will sharpen their talent through the process of rehearsal and presentation of scene work and a one-act piece, allowing them to identify acting habits that will inhibit growth in textual work, character development, technical polish and interplay. Pre-requisite of Acting Technique II is required, or by instructor permission. (Once advanced to level III, students will continue to work a different play each semester, culminating in The Academy Acting Showcase to be performed at the Glen Echo Main stage on Sunday, May 15, 2016.) Acting the Song Facilitated by an experienced voice teacher and musical theater professional, students will work on the skills necessary to technically and aesthetically perform musical theater repertoire. Both up-tempo and ballad songs will be chosen for students’ vocal ranges and acting abilities. Ballet I Ballet I is for the novice or beginner student. Core body strength, arms and correct turn-out based on a student’s anatomy and muscular development are emphasized at the barre. Center work is focused on the basics of adagio (slow controlled combination), preparation for pirouettes, simple turns across the floor, petit allégro and grand allégro. Before advancing to Ballet II, students must be able to execute these basic exercises. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. Ballet II Ballet II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Ballet technique. Students must audition for placement at this level. Ballet II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced turns and step combinations. Before advancing to Ballet III, students must be able to execute these exercises safely and correctly. Pre-requisite of Ballet I is required, or by instructor permission. Ballet III Ballet III is the advanced level of ballet, for the student who is able to master complex movements and combinations. Barre and center combinations move faster, and become more complex than in previous study. Turn-out based on individual ability and strength continues to be emphasized along with posture and core strength. The student is introduced to complex rhythms, pirouettes, and jumps. Proper placement is continually reinforced by students applying those concepts to the exercises and movements they learn. At this level, head and arm movements are coordinated and synchronized and the memorization of steps and musicality are further developed. Pre-requisite of Ballet II is required, or by instructor permission. Ballet/Jazz Combo I Ballet/Jazz Combo I is for the novice or beginner student. The combination course allows students to gain a fundamental knowledge of and preparation for the dance forms of both ballet and jazz. Classes consist of learning the standard placement of feet and arms, basic terminology, barre exercises, floor work and simple jazz combinations. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course.
Ballet/Jazz Combo II Ballet/Jazz Combo II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in both Ballet and Jazz technique. Ballet/Jazz Combo II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced turns and jazz combinations. After two semesters of study, students are encouraged to study each form separately. Pre-requisite of Ballet/ Jazz Combo I is required, or by instructor permission. Contemporary I Contemporary I/II is for the novice or beginner student. Contemporary dance is a fusion of ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical and many modern dance styles and is integrated in contemporary Broadway dance. Classes consist of barre exercises, floor work and various combinations of multiple dance forms. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. Contemporary II Contemporary II is for the intermediate student, who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Contemporary technique. Contemporary II continues to strengthen technique and flexibility, with the addition of more advanced combinations. Pre-requisite of Contemporary I is required, or by instructor permission Jazz I Jazz I is for the novice or beginner student. Jazz is a prominent form incorporated in Broadway dance. Classes include intensive strengthening, stretching techniques, across the floor combinations, leaps, and turns. Students will gain knowledge of terminology, strength, flexibility, and an understanding of Broadway Jazz technique. No pre-requisite or placement is required for this course. Jazz II Jazz II is for the intermediate student who possesses a strong foundation and basic vocabulary in Jazz technique. Jazz II continues to hone and strengthen technique in the form, with the addition of more advanced technique, and step combinations. Continued improvement of core strength and flexibility, will be of focus. Pre-requisite of Jazz I is required, or by instructor permission. Jazz III Jazz III is for the advanced student who is able to master complex movements and combinations. These are the highest level and most advanced students prepping for professional or collegiate study. Classes include intensive strengthening warm-ups, stretching techniques to elongate and encourage muscle strength, across the floor movements, leaps, turns and center combination work. Students will gain increasing knowledge of Jazz terminology, greater strength and flexibility, and an understanding of ever-evolving musical theater Jazz technique. Pre-requisite of Jazz II is required, or by instructor permission. Tap I Tap I is for the novice or beginner student. “Broadway Tap” is the chosen sub-style taught by ATMTC, which incorporates upper body and use of arms in addition to a focus on percussive rhythm and footwork. Classes emphasize the development and strengthening of basic tap technique and terminology highlighting the importance of rhythm and sound. No prerequisite or placement is required for this course. Tap II Tap II is for the advanced beginner student who has acquired a basic vocabulary and skill set and is developing technique in the form. Advanced, intricate footwork and combinations are studied. Pre-requisite of Tap I is required, or by instructor permission. Tap III Tap III is for the intermediate tap student. Student possesses strong technique and is able to master more complex combinations. Pre-requisite of Tap II is required, or by instructor permission. Tap IV Tap IV is for the most advanced level of student. These are the highest level students prepping for professional or collegiate study. Pre-requisite of Tap III is required, or by instructor permission.

For parents of young theater professionals (Wintergreen Plaza location) Your baby wants nothing more than to BE ON THE STAGE. As parents, we don’t know how to best help them achieve their goals, we worry they’ll starve (!!!), and what about college?(!!!) This workshop has been created to provide parents with practical, solid advice to benefit their child and assist them in navigating the world of professional theater. Make no mistake, the arts world offers steady stress for kids: Auditions outnumber jobs; competition and rejection are facts of life, and there are spoken and unspoken parental expectations… Spend the day with ATMTC – we’ll get you all squared away on how to be a smart stage parent: This special workshop will offer valuable insight, advice and tips from a professional panel including casting and collegiate professionals. Topics will include overcoming what is holding you back from getting seen by Casting Directors (it’s all about relationships), to get (or not to get) a manager & agent, to be (or not to be) equity, creating resumes and headshots that stand out (for the right reasons!), steering clear of scams, how to effectively handle rejection, and plenty of insider tips that will help you help your child follow his his dreams of being a professional performer. Participant fee: $60 per adult, plus $5 registration fee.

MUSICAL THEATER TRAINING FOR FUTURE BROADWAY STARS Grades 4–12 Audition Dates:
August 2, 2015 (noon–3 p.m.) August 20, 2015 (4–6 p.m.) The Pre-Professional Program prepares committed and gifted musical theater students in Grades 4–12 for college and/or a professional career. Led by a highly qualified faculty, the Pre-Professional Program curriculum provides students with inclusive training in singing, dancing, acting, and performance. Each Saturday, from September through May with a January break; students will receive five hours (Grades 8-12) or four hours (Grades 4–7) of specialized training in the three core areas of musical theater study and receive additional exclusive performance and educational opportunities throughout the year. Serious, talented, and aspiring musical theater students in Grades 4–12 are accepted into the program by audition only. ATMTC Academy faculty and staff evaluate each student based on singing, dancing and acting abilities. Acceptance is at the sole discretion of ATMTC faculty and staff. FEATURED ACADEMY FACULTY LESLIE PUTNAM is a native of North Carolina and a Graduate of the Western Carolina University BFA Musical Theatre Program. She has had the privilege to perform at many wonderful Regional Theatres and Summer Stocks all over the U.S. She spent the past two years working in Virginia as a Resident Actor at Wayside Theatre, and most recently spent the Christmas season with Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, VA in The Sound of Music. She is so excited to be a Teaching Artist for Adventure Theatre MTC and to be able to teach and share her passion for Musical Theatre. NICOLE MARTIN holds a BFA in Dance Performance from Towson University and has also trained with Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts, Dance Institute of Washington, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Ms. Nicole has taught throughout the DC and Baltimore area for over 10 years. Nicole has performed at the Kennedy Center, as well as with Spirit Wings Dance Company, Baltimore Dance Tech, Dance for the Camera Projects , Alvin Ailey American Dance Company and Philadanco Dance Company. SONIE MATHEW has been working with children since 1996. He started out as a camp counselor for the City of Gaithersburg Parks and Rec. Sonie went to Frostburg State University where he majored in Early Childhood/Elementary Education wit a minor in Theatre. After college, he worked for Montgomery County Public Schools – paraeducator, teacher, and then Aspergers Program Head. During his tenure at Montgomery Village MS, he and colleague brought the after school drama program back to the school. During the summers, Sonie was directing and choreographing productions as the Dept. Head of Drama for Camp Airy. After leaving MCPS, he went on to performing in various productions around the area and starting his videography business, SM-Squared Productions. Recently, during the daytime, for the past 3 years, Sonie was the Social Media and Marketing Associate/Resident Videographer & Photographer while in the evenings, he has been teaching Theatre Education for other organizations including Adventure Theatre MTC, Academy of the Arts, and BlackRock Center for the Arts. SHAWN SHORT has performed with K2 Dance, Adrian Bolton Dance, El Tearto de Danza Contemporeanea El Salvador, Bolton/Smith and has been a guest artist with Dance Alloy. Mr. Short is a Founding Teacher of the Washington Ballet’s outreach campus at THEARC campus in Southeast Washington, DC. He has taught in elementary, secondary education through arts integrating programs and afternoon programs. Mr. Short was the Program Director and Resident Choreographer for the Kelsey Collie Children’s Theatre for six years. He is the Artistic Director of Dissonance Dance Theatre Shawn is fiscally sponsored artist with New York Foundation for the Arts and has been funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

ANDY WASSENICH has been working as an actor, director, and arts educator in Washington for over a decade. He has performed, directed or assistant directed at many of DC’s theaters, including the Kennedy Center, Shakespeare Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, Everyman Theatre, Forum Theatre, Rorschach Theatre, Imagination Stage, The Inkwell, Wandering Souls, and he has taught acting for The Kennedy Center, National Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, Imagination Stage, the Theatre Lab and Wandering Souls. Andy has been a Kennedy Center/Kenan Fund Director-in-Residence, Assistant to the Artistic Director at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, and a Directing Fellow at the National Playwrights Conference. In New York, he’s directed two productions at the New York Int’l Fringe Festival and assistant directed two productions at Manhattan Theatre Club. Andy received a BA in Theatre from Drew University. He is a graduate of the directing program at The University of North Carolina School of The Arts, and has studied at the National Theatre Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Center and the Moscow Art Theatre School.
