Letter to the Editor…
Dear Editor,
The Show last weekend was a great success in so many ways. The amount of voluntary help at the Showgrounds on Friday and Saturday mornings was impressive to say the least. For the large number of people and livestock to turn up in those two days meant a great deal of planning must have taken place. The favourable weather conditions which were experienced for the entire Show contributed to a very successful and enjoyable outcome. And this impressive event took place so soon after the success of the Heritage Weekend - it’s a great, positive vibe for Allora. Congratulations to the whole community, especially to the events organisers, sponsors and volunteers.

Well Behaved Crowds at The Show
The Allora Police report that there were no police issues at the Allora Show.
Police Officer Ben Ogden said the crowds were exceptionally well behaved and the organisation did a great job.
My birthday
On Saturday it was my 12th birthday and on the Sunday I had a small birthday party at my house with my best friends Lucas and Reece from school. My mum and dad don’t seem to worry much about their own birthdays but for my brother William and me they are really important. But my little sister Amelia who is only 14 months old doesn’t know about birthdays yet so she is probably the same as mum and dad. For my birthday I got some of my favourite things which are Airfix and Tamiya scale model kits of World War Two aircraft and tanks for me to build. I also got this tiny air brush to use to paint the model planes really well which is the hardest part of model building.
For
My dad had to work on Saturday and Sunday so we had my birthday party on Sunday afternoon when he could be home. Mum baked a special birthday cake which had a spitfire fighter plane made from icing on it and I blew out the twelve candles with one blow only. My friends Lucas and Reece and my brother William and I all had a swim and then ate pizzas and watched Harry Potter and played Twister and had a Nerf Gun war. Little Amelia was really happy joining in and she probably thought that the party was for her. We were trying to watch Harry Potter movies and she came over and got in the way and put pizza sauce all over us. Now that Amelia can walk she always gets up to a lot of strife. I had a very good time with my birthday. It is great to now be 12.

First Angiogram Procedure At Toowoomba Hospital
Allora man Ken was all smiles after being the first patient to receive a diagnostic angiogram at the Toowoomba Hospital earlier this month.
This new service at Toowoomba Hospital is increasing local capability and bringing care closer to home for patients with Staff thrilled to now be able to offer the procedure.
A coronary angiogram uses x-ray imaging and contrast dye to diagnose heart artery blockages.
“It went very smoothly, and everyone worked well as a team,” said Clinical Nurse Consultant Kirsten Douglas-Robinson.
“Now that we offer this service, patients may not need to travel to Brisbane for their procedure so they can stay in Toowoomba and have it done here.”
And that makes a big difference to patients like Ken, the first recipient of the coronary angiogram.
“It was exciting being the first cab off the rank. Very pleased.”

“It’s good to see the hospital here has this facility to do this procedure, it’s amazing,” said Ken.
Director of Cardiology Dr Robert Gluer said he’s extremely proud of the team and their collaboration with the Medical Imaging department.
“It’s been a massive team effort, the number of people
involved and the time and energy that’s gone into this can’t be underestimated. We were very lucky to have the Medical Imaging department upgrading their equipment, and funding from Toowoomba Hospital Foundation for a balloon pump.”
“It means that patients will be able to have a diagnostic
coronary angiogram here, and only people who need further procedures then need to travel to Brisbane.”
The introduction of the diagnostic service is the beginning of a bigger plan to grow local cardiac services at Toowoomba Hospital, including offering stents to heart attack patients in the future.
It’s essential for grassroots group and associations to effectively plan projects so that they can continue to access funding and community support. This workshop will cover project planning basics as well as communication on a shoestring budget. Suitable for any not of profit group or community movment, the 4-hr workshop will be hands-on and interactive.

Roger Celebrates His 80th With Family & Friends
On Saturday 28th January Roger Nielsen celebrated his 80th birthday with many happy partygoers.
His sister Rachael from New Zealand and sons Keith and Mel flew across the ditch for the celebrations.
The relatives jumped in to help out on the night with Aaron and Rachael handling the cooking spit, Dale providing the birthday cake and Jason & Jana putting on a spectacular night/light show.
Born Henry Roger Nielsen on 29th January 1943 at Opanari, Taranaki, New Zealand.
Only son of Henry Kitchener and Mary Nielsen and brother to Anne, Faye, Marie, Kaye and Racheal.
In New Zealand he was a pretty good footballer and in his teens represented New Zealand in Rugby Union.
When Rog left the Farm he joined the New Zealand Police Force but this was not for him.
Building was in his blood as his Grandfather Henry Rasmas Nielsen is recognised for building the first sawn timber hut/house on the North Island.
When Roger moved to Australia he had no problem finding work in the Building Industry.
He built-up a great reputation and worked for well known Building Companies including Jenning Constructions, Prowse, McNab, Fletcher Constructions and had his own company Melbourne Constructions.
Some of Roger’s building feats, in which he was in charge included Redbank Plaza, Treasury Casino in Brisbane, Black Toyota Warwick and the Warwick West State School’s Library and community area.
In Toowoomba Roger and his crew built Super Rooster, Bernoth Centre, the Catholic Archives building and Concannon College then in Allora Roger built two aged units.
In his spare time (if he had any!) Roger was a keen Golfer and became the left hand golfing champion for Queensland playing alongside the likes of Greg Norman. He has enjoyed playing at many courses around the area including Clifton and Allora.
In 1987 Roger met the love of his life, wife Sharon so when he retired Rog enjoyed helping Sharon with the mail run where he has made many friends. Along with their son Jason-Roger, they have loved their time spent in Allora.

St Patrick’s: The heart of student leadership
Student leadership is central to the core values at St Patrick’s School, Allora. The students of Glengallan (Years 5 and 6) have assumed this leadership role with ease and diligence. In particular, the bond that is beginning to form with their new prep buddies is extremely strong and gentle caring.
The Year 6 leaders were formally inducted into their roles as student leaders during the school’s Induction Mass which was held on Tuesday 7 February. This celebration was a special one, as the Year 6 students asked God to bless and guide them, as they journey through 2023.
Together as a community, we look forward to the many challenges and rewards that 2023 have in store for us all. As student leaders, may our Year 6 cohort always display a positive attitude in what they do, treat all with dignity and may they persevere in their actions to do what is right and just. Let us all have
courage to face the many challenges presented to us.
As a leadership group, the Year 6 student were asked to reflect on the opportunities to lead that will be presented to them in 2023. Some common themes emerged:
“That I take care of all the children in the school.”
“My goal is to guide the Prep students with spirit.”
“To inspire the younger children to do the right thing.”
“My goal is to show dignity to all.”

Update On Allora Groundwater Supplies
Southern Downs Regional is proactively addressing water security through a multi-pronged approach in readiness for the next drought.
The last drought triggered the Queensland Government’s $19.34 million Southern Downs Drought Resilience Package which included a range of projects aimed at providing water security for Southern Downs including upgrades to the Warwick Water Treatment Plant. As part of the package, works will soon commence on upgrading infrastructure to connect to groundwater supplies in Warwick and Allora which will ease water supply pressure from industries and free up more supply for urban use.
Preparatory works for the proposed Toowoomba to Warwick pipeline, including detailed design, costings, surveying and geotechnical works, are now reaching the final stages. When complete, the project will provide further water security to the region.
Sunwater is collaborating with Council on a solution to access the rest of the dead storage at the dam.
Council has also conducted investigations into further local groundwater supplies near Warwick, Allora and Stanthorpe.
Notwithstanding the many other facets of long-term water security being pursued, Council considers the construction of Emu Swamp Dam to be a critical component of the overall water security solution for Stanthorpe, the Granite Belt and the broader Southern Downs region.

Matthew Wins Again
Allora Golf Notes
Allora’s Matthew Denny took out first place in the Open Men’s Discus Final at the Adelaide Invitational held at South Australia’s Athletics Stadium on Saturday.
Matthew was unchallenged with his first-round throw of 64.39 metres which was more than 10 metres to second placegetter Lachlan
Page with 53.67 metres and World Under 20 finalist Darcy Miller third with 53.62 metres.
The Invitational proved a good practice run for Matthew in the leadup to the World Athletic Championship being held in Budapest later this year.
Allora Bowls Notes
Fire Ants, he played some great winning shots in the last two ends for a win over Doesn’t Matter, Lynn P and Russell were very proud of you.
ROUND 2 - Finally, after two weeks of wet Tuesday nights we were able to play Round 2 in week 4. Greg Patto was adamant that we were playing week 3 but no sooner had we started when a storm came, Lynn Patto didn’t even turn up so sure was he that there would be no play. I think you need to check the BOM site more often Greg.

Thank you to everyone who helps each week making it a great night of Social Bowls.
On Sunday, in what was one of the most enthralling matchplay finals ever played at the Allora Club, Jason Nightingale defeated Kenny Wilson on the 18th hole. These two golfers are among the most competitive in the club which was obvious to their playing partners during the round. Jason has been close to a major win over the past few years and this victory is testament to his tenacity. He is also one of the nicest blokes you will ever meet. For Kenny to make the final was a fantastic achievement considering he defeated a number of the club’s best golfers along the way, including six time club champion Kev Harrison. Congratulations to both Jason and Kenny. (Jason is pictured following his victory with Captain Hethe and President Brooke).
Friday’s Allora Hardware Duck Run was won by Macca on 22 points with Moose runner-up on 20. NTP won by Macca, approach by Kev and long putt by Dave Dwan. Great to see our local newsagent Dave out having a serious hit of golf. The only problem we had was getting him to go home after the round. Thanks Allora Hardware for the sponsorship.
Sunday we played for a club trophy with Kev the winner with an impressive 41 points from Macca on 36 in a countback from Moose. Next week will be the Ty Gardner Monthly Medal. Club Championships will be played over the weekends of 4th/5th and 11th/12th March.
We are concerned that a number of players are mistreating the golf carts and they are being returned in a damaged state. Of particular concern is people standing on the back of the cart. All members are requested to keep an eye out for this type of behaviour and call it out.
The course is in fantastic condition and everyone is encouraged to go out and enjoy it. See you on the links.

THANK YOU FROM SHIRLEY CORNHILL President of Allora Show Society
After a wonderful, well-supported Show I would like to sincerely thank everyone who made this Show such a success. Without all our sponsors, volunteers, exhibitors, stewards, judges and helpers this would not have been possible. We had great weather, hot but not wet and people came from near and far to enjoy two days of fun filled action. Over 600 horse events in 6 rings going all day and over 600 dog entries which has to be some sort of record. Once again thanks to everyone who helped and visited our 145th Allora Show.

Three Time State Champion - Bailey Harm
It was a gold rush three-peat for Allora swimmer Bailey Harm at the Queensland Sprint Championships on Saturday 11th February.
Bailey won gold in the 14 years 50m Freestyle in a time of 24.40. He backed it up with gold in the 50m Backstroke in a time of 28.54. Bailey went on to also win gold in the 50 Breaststroke in a time of 31.65. This is the fourth year in a row that Bailey has won the title of Queensland State Champion in the Breaststroke sprint final.
In a busy part of the season, Bailey recently broke 8 records at the Darling Downs Regional Swimming Association Country Championships in Dalby, another 5 records at the Scots PGC Interhouse carnival and a further 6 at the Border Districts School meet in Stanthorpe.
Bailey has been enjoying his opportunities with
Queensland Swimming as a result of his selection in the You for 2032 Talent Identification squad, most recently participating in underwater filming and analysis of his swimming at the Queensland Academy of Sport. Bailey was announced as the Warwick and District Junior Sportsperson of the Year prior to attending the State Sprints.
Bailey will now focus on the upcoming schools pathway before culminating his season heading to the Swimming Australia National Age Championships in April on the Gold Coast.
