I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to the 2023 Clifton Show. It has been two years since the last show with the committee making the difficult decision to cancel the 2022 show due to the Covid situation.
When an event misses a year it can be difficult to revive, however the committee, volunteers, sponsors and competitors have shown up and got on with the job. Now all we need is you the patrons.
The show entertainment will be headlined by the rodeo which has proved so popular with patrons over the years. Hula Hoop kids entertainment will also be there from lunch time on Saturday to keep the children entertained.
There have been some changes of times for events this year with the Pet Parade now to be held 3:00pm Saturday to be followed by the Battle of the Brains at 4:00pm.
The sheep dog trials will once again return to the show with three days of competition taking place in the sheep dog ring in the south eastern corner of the grounds. It is well worth the walk to view the skill of these dogs and their handlers.
The show will kick off Friday morning with the prime cattle and fat lamb competition as well as entries being taken in the pavilion, followed by the all breeds heifer show under lights on Friday Evening.
Saturday will see the usual livestock judging including Stud Cattle, featuring a Black Angus feature show, and Stud Sheep as well as Angora goat junior judging.
The ring will be jam packed with horses both Saturday and Sunday with show jumping, horse judging, sporting events, harness classes and the mini stockmans challenge.
As always an event of this size is no mean feat to put on and requires hours of dedication from over 100 volunteers, my thanks goes to all those volunteers who
come together and showcase the strength of our community to visiting competitors, who regularly comment on the standard of our show and its volunteers.
The committee are always looking for helpers and new members to help leading up to and at the show.
If you feel you may be able to help in any way, please contact the secretary or any of the committee members whose contact details are in the schedule, you will be always most welcome.
The Clifton Show is a community society and relies heavily on local sponsorship and we acknowledge those businesses that put their hands deep into their pockets to support the local community, so I ask you to support them whenever possible.
There will be lots to do and see at the 2023 show, so please come along, I look
forward to seeing you all there and hopefully seeing some cooler days to celebrate the 2023 Clifton Show.
PAT WEIR MPMy sincere congratulations to the Clifton Show Society committee.
Wishing you all a successful show in 2023.
Come out and support your local show and community.

Among the highlights of every show are the local community groups showing off what they do best. This year’s show will be no different.
The Local Ambulance Committee will be at the show on Saturday to help people brush up on their CPR skill. First aid kits will also be on sale. They will be sited just outside the main pavilion. Be sure to come and say hello and meet our ambo officers.
Our local Landcare Group will be on hand to advise our local community what equipment they have available for use. Our local hardware heroes RAFF will also be on show at Clifton, on the
corner block across from stud cattle area.
While there, check out the new arena the Show Society has put in place at the stud cattle area. It’s certainly worth a look.
Ringers Western Bus is visiting Clifton Show. If you’re after jeans, western shirts, or other types of clothing, make sure you have a look. They will be sighted near the Rodeo arena.
miss it!

The boiled fruit cake challenge continues to provide a level playing field for chefs young and old in Clifton.
Whether you’re a seasoned pro or someone new to the kitchen, you’re in with a chance of gaining some culinary bragging rights.
First prize, $50, is certainly nothing to sneeze at, and a far cry from the 1968 prize money of $1.50. Second place takes home $25 and third scores $15. The entry fee is only 60 cents.
INGREDIENTS:
For the challenge, all you’ll need is the following:
375g mixed fruit, 1 teaspoon mixed spice, 1 cup cold water, 1 teaspoon bi-carb soda, two well-beaten eggs, 1 dessert spoon marmalade, 125g butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup self-raising flour, 1 cup plain flour.
METHOD:
Place butter, mixed fruit, spice, soda, sugar, cold water and marmalade into a saucepan. Boil for 2 minutes. Cool slightly, Add eggs, fold in sifted flour, bake in 20cm round or square tin at 325oF or 162oC for 1 hour or a little longer.
If you think you’ve got what it takes to be crowned Clifton’s Boiled Fruit Cake Champion, get your entry to the show pavilion between 9am and 12 on Friday, February 17.
There are over 50 culinary classes all up, including open and junior sections. In a touching tribute, a recipe book of the late Olive Shooter, stalwart of the Clifton Show culinary section for many, many years, has been donated by her family. It will be awarded to the Junior Points Prize winner.
The Clifton Show this year will be headlined by a full rodeo on Saturday night
All the usual rodeo events will be on show including the crowd favourite Barrel Racing where the agility of horses and skill of the rider are essential.
Tenths of seconds can make the difference in the race where turning ability and acceleration are prime requirements for a winning ride.
Riders in the bronco Saddle Ride put their skills up against an untamed wild horse in an event where riders often come off second best.
The bareback bronco ride would seem an even greater test of horsemanship where once again riders can often be the one to come off second best.
If enough entries permit there is a Novice Bull Riding event with the main event the Open Bull Ride, where riders take on the giant untamed wild bulls who like nothing better than to throw their riders into the dust.
If you’ve never been to a rodeo this is a great chance to see the skills and courage of cowboys and cowgirls in action.
So if you’ve never been before, make this, “your first rodeo”.
Black Angus cattle were first introduced to the Darling Downs in the 1840s and have been a major breed for graziers ever since with their renowned ability as a carcase breed and high quality meat.
The Black Angus is the preferred breed for the Japanese beef market where their propensity to marble, their white fat and bright red lean meat is much sought after. It is a popular breed throughout the world.
The Clifton Show competition for Black Angus cattle covers 15 classes with competition held on Saturday 18th February.
The Black Angus cattle competition is a major feature of any rural show. Major Prize Categories

Making its debut at the 2021 Show, the Stockman’s Challenge was an instant success.
Show Secretary Adele Saville said there has already been a fair bit of interest so this is one not to miss.
Riders compete in age groups and take their horses through a variety of challenges that test the skill of rider and horse.
Any breed of horse can compete and riders can use any type of saddle.
Horses are required at various stages of the course to walk, trot and canter and presentation of horse and rider is also a judging criteria.
The Stockman’s Challenge begins immediately after the Equine Sporting Events that start at 10.00 am and both competitions are a must see for horse lovers.
It may well have been a big rain year but for many fruit and vegetables the rain came at the wrong time of the year followed by a short but very dry period. This has impacted on the quality and quantity of many of the normal agricultural products.
The interest for visitors will be the chance to see what fruits and vegetables were able to
adapt to the very different weather year. Nevertheless vegetables such as Capsicums, Cucumbers, Garlic, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Turnips and many more will be on display.
The fruit section will include Apples, Dragon Fruit, Lemons, Limes, Melons, Nectarines, Pears, Plums and many more.
Saturday 18th February 2023 commences 9am
With over 300 dog entries you can expect to see dogs from all the common breeds such as Boxers, Kelpies, Jack Russells. Silky Terriers, Collies and many many more. Your favourite dog breed is bound to be on show and expect to see some exotic breeds as well. Dogs parade with their handlers in what is bound to be an impressive sight.
While the Championship dog show might attract much of the attention animals in the Pet Parade are loved no less by their owners. Categories in this event include:
1. Most lovable pet
There are dozens and dozens of horse events with riders of all age groups participating and horses from a multitude of different breeds. From pure bred Arabians, Thoroughbreds, Warmbloods, Quarterhorses, Paints, Miniature ponies, Heavy horses, and many more, horse lovers are in for a treat.
Young riders in particular love to show off their favourite horse and there’s no better way than to compete against other riders their own age. Competition will be fierce in all categories.
Harness classes are on from 10am. We can be assured of a great display of horses and buggies.
