The New Zealand Defence Industry Association Background In the early 1990s, the prime driver of much industry development in New Zealand was the ANZAC Ship Project. NZ Trade and Enterprise, New Zealand’s industry development agency at the time, formed Joint Action Groups (JAG) to provide networking opportunities and act as a catalyst for companies to form joint ventures which gave them better ability to enter into contracts in the project. This joint action worked well, and is still seen as a major benefit of membership. In 1993, as the ANZAC Ship Project wound up, the Defence JAG reformed itself as the NZ Defence Manufacturers’ Association and widened its activities to target general defence opportunities in New Zealand and overseas. As NZ industry involvement added to its capacity and capability, the organisation was renamed to NZ Defence Industry Association, thus including members who provide support and consulting services. As the membership of the NZ DIA has grown from an early 20—30 companies to the current 80 + (2015), the Association has been able to re-source considerably more activity for the benefit of members and Defence. Such activities include supporting the NZDF in its public events, and at-tending trade shows in Australia and South East Asia, at which the interests of members are promoted. The NZ Defence Industry Forum, held in October/November each year, has become a highlight of the year for both industry and Defence.

The New Zealand Defence Industry Association Activities And Membership •

• • • •

• • • •

Organises a Forum in October/November each year which brings together people from the New Zealand and international defence and industry communities Provides market information to members for both general defence opportunities and specific projects. Is active, alongside NZ Trade and Enterprise, in promoting the NZ defence industry at overseas (especially Australia) defence forums. Provides networking opportunities for member companies, and encourages the formation of alliances and joint ventures. Can match the needs of prime contractors in NZ and overseas with NZ companies who may act as in country representatives, contractors or subcontractors. Liaises with the NZDF and Ministry of Defence to source information of relevance to members. Seeks to have a more informed membership by arranging briefings and visits on general defence industry matters and specific projects. Provides input to public consultation on defence industry matters, such as White Paper developments. Lobbies the government and defence agencies on matters of concern to members.

The New Zealand Defence Industry Association Membership Membership of the NZ DIA is available to all NZ companies, and overseas companies in certain specific situations. Quarterly meetings provide an opportunity to: •

meet with fellow members, and share experiences,

hear from key figures in defence and government about what they expect or require from NZ industry

develop business relationships

Joint promotion of NZ and NZ business. In cooperation with NZ Trade and Enterprise and other industry associations, the NZ DIA attends NZ and overseas trade events to promote the interests of members in the international market place. Lobbying. The NZ DIA has a very good relationship with the Minister of Defence, the Secretary of Defence and senior NZDF officers. As a result, it can make representation on matters affecting its members’ interests and receive a good hearing.

New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Partnering with NZ DIA New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) is the Government’s international business development agency. Our purpose is to grow companies internationally – bigger, better, faster – for the benefit of New Zealand. Within NZTE, the Better by Procurement (BBP) team assists customers (New Zealand companies) to win business internationally in government and complex Business to Business (B2B) sales. We do this through workshops which educate companies on how to improve their pitching, presenting and proposal writing skills. Specifically within the defence sector, BBP assists New Zealand companies by matching their capabilities and making high level introductions to potential prime contractors and decision makers for major defence projects in New Zealand, and other defence-related opportunities offshore. We achieve this though having a close, yet independent, working relationship with both Defence (MoD and NZDF) and the wider defence industry. NZTE and in particular the BBP team is proud to support the New Zealand Defence Industry Association (NZDIA) in its endeavors to develop the New Zealand defence industry , both domestically and, more importantly, in the international market. NZ Defence Industry Awards The NZ DIA Forum 2016 Apart from its growing reputation as the networking event between the NZDF, the Mod, NZ DIA members and the wider defence Industry Committee, the NZ DIA Forum has become the “must be” place for those wishing to learn about defence business in New Zealand. The 2016 event will be held, for the first time, in Auckland, in association with Operation Neptune, the Royal New Zealand Navy’s 75th Anniversary celebrations. The timing will coincide with the International Fleet Review and numerous other spectacular events to be held in Auckland. Mark your diaries now, 17—18 November 2015, so that you are able to attend some of the Naval events and the NZ DIA Forum. If you are not on our mailing list for information about the Forum, email contact@nzdia.co.nz NZ DIA and DIAC Awards—RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE The NZ DIA is committed to encouraging excellence in defence industry matters. The web site http://www.nzdia.co.nz/awards.html outlines an NZ DIA initiative to reward defence personnel who have contributed significantly to improving the relationships between the NZDF, the MoD and industry. http://www.defence.govt.nz/ acquisitions-tenders/mod-industryawards.html is a Defence Industry Council of NZ programme which recognises excellence in Defence Contractors. This is a highly sought after award, and is presented annually. Both awards are presented at the NZ DIA Forum each year.

PROVIDING NATIONAL SECURITY

BY THE SHEDLOAD National security extends beyond the battlefield, and so does Lockheed Martin. Our project Alexander team now employs over 250 Kiwis and purchases over $10 million of goods and services in New Zealand each year. Through the extension of our logistics management and warehousing services to the NZ Police Force and other first responders, Lockheed Martin is meeting the security challenges of today – and tomorrow.
