MPTA Apprenticeship Training and Development of people working within the milk harvesting, water and effluent application sectors is the MPTA’s key focus. The nature of our industry is that work required to be undertaken is often specialised and costly, so it is essential that we have skilled and trained professionals on hand, offering consistently high levels, to meet the needs of clients. We are thrilled to, finally, be able to offer the long awaited Industry Trade Apprenticeship titled “New Zealand Certificate in Dairy Systems (Engineering) Level 4 with strands in Milking Systems and Pumping Systems”. This three year qualification has been developed in conjunction with Competenz, the Industry Training Organisation for the Engineering sector. We believe the Engineering sector is the best fit for the skills our industry trainees will need to become competent technicians. The apprenticeship is made up of a mixture of learning methods being correspondence (or e-Learning), block courses and on-job training. The apprenticeship will take a tiered structure over three years. • • •
Year 1 introducing the apprentice to engineering basics via the NZ Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 2). Year 2 covers more advanced engineering skills (pneumatics, hydraulics etc) combined with single phase electrical training plus an array of MPTA courses in either the Milking or Pumping fields, depending on what strand the apprentice has chosen. Year 3 takes the engineering skills to a higher level again (bearings, power transmissions etc) combined with higher level Electrical Service Technician training and more MPTA specialised courses plus installing and commissioning the project.
Apprentices can be signed up at any time throughout the year, so contact MPTA to find out more about how the Apprenticeship works. A number of scholarship or sponsorship opportunities are available.

MPTA Training Courses MPTA offers a suite of training courses in both the milk harvesting and water / effluent sectors to aid in the up-skilling and development of staff, ensuring that quality standards are upheld and that there is consistency in the work of our tradespeople. Our training courses are managed by the Technology Training Centre Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary company of the MPTA and is the entity used to drive training and development for MPTA Members and related industry. Our purpose built training facility is located opposite Massey University in Palmerston North; however, we also run courses throughout the country to meet client demands. Below are the courses the MPTA currently offer. More information about these courses and course dates for 2016 can be found on our website www.nzmpta.co.nz . We can only run these courses with the support of industry and you are urged to take advantage of the courses on offer.
Milking Machine Testing This five-day course is run from our Palmerston North purpose built Training Centre and is the backbone of our training. It is designed to teach practical skills in a workshop like situation. It is the basis of the milking machine industries training program for new technicians and those re-entering the industry. Participants will gain a thorough understanding of how a milking machine should be installed and how it should operate. They will also gain the ability to test a machine for function and make recommendations on faults found. The course provides the fundamental building blocks for carrying out a Milking Machine Test.
Milking Machine Testing Refresher This two-day refresher course is designed for people who have already completed the full Milking Machine Testing Course and feel they need to refresh or update their skills and knowledge regarding test methodology and reporting. Standard test methods, variable speed drive systems and vacuum regulation characteristics are included.
Introduction to Milking Machines This one-day course is offered online and is an informal introduction for those who are new to the industry that require an understanding of the workings of milking machinery and associated components. Participants will learn: basic machine components, their function, layout of components in a farm dairy and basic physics relating to how the components of the machines interact.

Milk Quality & Grade Troubleshooting This two-day course is designed to give participants an understanding of all dairy industry milk quality tests such as: bacteria quality, penicillin contamination, thermoduric, coliform bacteria and BMSCC. Milking machine technicians must have a solid knowledge base on the various dairy company milk quality parameters as many of these are directly impacted by milking machine function and cleaning system function. This course will give participants a very good base from which they can discuss these issues with farmers and troubleshot grading problems more effectively. Farmers normally demand rapid solutions when they’re losing money through milk quality downgrades, so a technician’s ability to quickly eliminate causes and go to the heart of the problem will help their reputation considerably.
Mastitis & Liner Selection including Troubleshooting As a dairy technician or professional, what you do on a daily basis may directly affect every cow in every herd for which you are involved. This is an important responsibility and often farmers will unfairly target milking machinery as the primary cause of mastitis when this is not necessarily the case. It is important that technicians can understand the various factors involved in mastitis, so that the
appropriate assistance can be provided in mastitis detection, resolution and prevention. This three-day course will help further develop a technician’s skills so that they can critically look at other factors beyond the milking machine that may be causing mastitis. This includes farmer’s cup handling technique, cow flow into and out of the farm dairy, general milking technique and the effect of milk flow on vacuum levels in the milking machine as well as testing and evaluating milking machine function during milking. The Liner Selection content of this course is also offered as a one day course.
Cleaning Systems Evaluation & Milk Delivery This three-day course is designed to help technicians understand and evaluate the effectiveness of cleaning systems for milking machines and milk silos and teaches how a cleaning system needs to be set up to ensure that, for food safety purposes, all milk contact surfaces are effectively cleaned. It also deals with all aspects of milk delivery from the milk pump, plate

cooler through to the bulk milk tank plus the regulations of the Farm Dairy Code of Practice. When milk quality downgrades occur it’s important to be able to more thoroughly evaluate the system in use. Contact time, temperature, mechanical action and chemical action all work together and must all be evaluated together.
Stray Voltage Testing This one-day course is offered online and is designed to give participants an understanding of what causes stray voltage problems in and around the farm dairy, how to evaluate voltage gradients and make recommendations. Participants will learn: basic theory relating to power reticulation, an understanding of why stray voltage problems occur, how to recognise signs of stray voltage, how to use a volt meter, diagnosis and recommendations.
How to Select the Right Pump This two-day course is designed to give participants the skills in how to select the correct water pump to meet the needs of specific pump performance requirements. Course content includes pump selection and pumping principles, basic hydraulics and terminology needed to size piping systems and calculate head and flow requirements, cavitation - what it does to pumps and how to avoid it, pumps working in series and parallel, frequency drives – why they are used and how they can be used to advantage and how electrical motors work in relation to pumps.

Farm Dairy Effluent Hydraulic Design
Small Drinking Water Supplies
This three-day course has been developed for those involved in the design and installation of Farm Dairy Effluent Systems to improve their design skills and align more closely with the new FDE Design Code of Practice and Standards. It covers aspects of hydraulic design, irrigator and pump selection for Farm Dairy Effluent Hydraulic and System Design and includes the use of amazing time saving EXCEL calculators to assist with design parameters. Suited to all levels from beginners to experienced designers, extensive use is made of practical examples and step by step tutoring to show how calculations are undertaken with the aim of achieving better designs than previously possible.
This two-day course is designed to give participants the skills needed to evaluate the performance of existing water supplies and to determine treatment options for new and existing water supplies and to prepare Public Health Risk Management Plans for water supplies. It incorporates NZQA Unit Standards 22873 and 22874. Participants will learn; Factors that affect quality and quantity of water available from water sources and catchments, capabilities and limitations of water treatment processes, how to select water treatment processes, multi-barrier systems for public health protection, drinking water reticulation components from source to taps, monitoring and recording requirements and how to prepare Public Health Risk Management Plans.
Farm Water Reticulation Created out of the proven Certificate in Agricultural Engineering Course previously offered by Massey University, this new three-day course covers all aspects of engineering design of water reticulation systems found on New Zealand farms including Stockwater, Dairy Shed and Domestic supplies. Extensive use is made of practical examples and tutorial style teaching allowing the student to gain vital skills in designing and performing calculations. Participants of all levels will gain vital skills from this course, with newly developed techniques using EXCEL Calculators enabling the most complex calculations to be performed easily.
