Polycorp EPFLEX™ Railseal Interface is an extruded virgin rubber profile designed to absorb the destructive energy from both rail deflection and vehicular traffic for proven results in extending the expected life of the crossing. These beneficial results are achieved by maximizing the load support from adjoining materials and evenly distributing load bearing between the rubber, road surface and rail, while allowing sufficient isolation to absorb the destructive energies. Shaped to match the exact contours of the rail, EPFLEX™ Railseal Interface protects the crossing against surface water and other contaminants. This sealing feature greatly reduces fouled and contaminated ballast to maximize structural support and maintain the integrity of the rail fastening system.

WELCOME TO OUR RTAA DIARY 2015 The Rail Track Association Australia, (RTAA) is a voluntary, notfor-profit organisation dedicated to “pursuing and promoting the interests of track infrastructure within the Australian rail sector”. With a proud history which began in 1973, the RTAA brings together owners, contractors, consultants, manufacturers, suppliers, academics, research and development personnel, regulators and individuals who are part of the Australian rail track community. Members come from all walks of the industry and include individuals and corporate bodies. Looking to the future, the RTAA priorities for the next four years are: • To broaden the appeal of rail for women, young people and Indigenous people • To be a truly national organisation

• To participate in the establishment of uniform track standards • To promote grassroots knowledge sharing from one generation to the next. The RTAA continues to promote the highly successful rail industry Field Days event. Our sixth event will be held 25/26 February 2015 in conjunction with Sydney Trains, part of Transport for NSW. The Field Days event is a significant outdoor display of the industry’s rail infrastructure, construction and maintenance equipment. It demonstrates the latest technology as well as the pride of the Australian rail community. Participation is open to anyone with an interest in railways, whether as a visitor or exhibitor – all are welcome to be part of this prestigious event. This diary represents one of the many products and services provided to members. Inside you will find more information on the RTAA’s activities, events and achievements.

Our Management Committee The RTAA has an active and vibrant Management Committee which meets on a regular basis. We invite members to participate in our Annual General Meeting which is held in November each year during the AusRAIL Conference. Management Committee Meetings are held at least three times per year and present a forum for discussion on industry matters as well as RTAA business. Sub-committees are formed to expedite matters which are of benefit to and impact upon our association and its members.

OUR RAIL INDUSTRY FIELD DAYS EVENT One of the primary focuses of the RTAA today is our highly successful rail industry Field Days event. To date we have held five Field Days events in conjunction with RailCorp (now Sydney Trains) in NSW. The Field Days event is a huge display of the industry’s rail infrastructure, construction and maintenance equipment, assembled at an outdoor exhibition to showcase products and services. Visitors gain free entry to this display held over two days. It also provides opportunities for corporate sponsorship as well as a unique occasion when contributors of all levels in the rail industry can intermingle.

The Field Days demonstrate the latest technology to whet the enthusiasm of younger technicians, trades’ people and graduate engineers entering the railway industry for the first time. Our last Field Days event, in February 2013, attracted approximately 1,500 visitors with an even larger event planned for 25/26 February 2015. In 2010 we also initiated our first No Tie Dinner, held on the first evening of the Field Days event. This attracted 300 guests and proved to be a highly entertaining and enjoyable social event in the Australian rail calendar. It also provided an opportunity for networking by all echelons of the rail industry. Our last dinner was held in August 2014.

OUR HISTORY The RTAA originated in 1973 after the First International Rail Sleeper Conference was held in Sydney. This conference was the catalyst for the establishment of the Rail Sleeper Association. In 1979, the name was changed to the Rail Track and Sleeper Association and in 1983, the Association became known as the Rail Track Association Australia. The RTAA organised thirteen highly successful Rail Conferences between 1973 and 2001 at three yearly intervals. These cost effective conferences were held in major locations in Australia and New Zealand and were well supported by the rail industry. They included guest speakers from Australia and overseas, providing a high standard of technical papers and information.

Between conferences, from 1979 to 1995, the Rail Track Journal was published by the RTAA with the objective of maintaining a communication link between members of the Association. In 1996, Track & Signal Magazine began producing four copies of their new magazine each year, with endorsement by the RTAA. The RTAA also provides technical and editorial assistance, when necessary, and this support of Track & Signal Magazine by the RTAA continues today.

OUR RTAA STREAM AT AUSRAIL CONFERENCES In 2001, the RTAA took on a new direction in securing an agreement with the ARA to combine with the RTAA for a rail industry exhibition and conference called AusRAIL PLUS. In November 2003, for the first time, five major industry groups, ARA, RTAA, ARIC, IRSE and RTSA, joined forces to present the highly successful AusRAIL PLUS Conference in Sydney. This event attracted over 600 attendees. As a part of the AusRAIL partnership, successful AusRAIL PLUS Conferences are held each odd year with the minor AusRAIL Conferences held in the between years. The RTAA presents quality technical conference papers in our stream during the conference. The RTAA initiated the inaugural RTAA Yellow Tie Dinner in 1981, when guests were presented with a selection of coloured ties and scarves representing a rail theme. The yellow ties became the most desired, with guests trading for yellow ties. When the AusRAIL

conference came into being, the RTAA agreed to the ARA adopting this tradition on the second evening of each AusRAIL PLUS Conference. Today, numbers at the dinner are strictly limited to 1,000 guests due to its immense popularity.

OUR FRANK FRANKLYN AWARD

In 2008, the RTAA awarded its inaugural young rail track specialist award, named in honour of one of our founding members. The prize for this prestigious award is a trip to an international rail exhibition to the value of up to $10,000. The award is granted annually to a deserving nominee at the Gala Dinner at the AusRAIL Conference.

OUR NETWORK MEETINGS We also welcome members to our free networking technical meetings which are jointly sponsored by the RTAA and the meeting stakeholder. They provide an opportunity for social networking amongst members and their guests in a more casual atmosphere. These meetings have been held in Sydney and other centres around Australia, with distinguished guest speakers invited to highlight current aspects of a rail trackrelated matter. We have also received recognition of the technical sessions. RTAA networking meetings are supported by Engineers Australia and members can choose to record CPD hours for attendance at our events in their personal logs.

OUR OBJECTIVES • To bring together specialists concerned with the design, construction, fabrication, operation and maintenance of railway track. • To foster collaboration between railways, suppliers of track components and equipment, and those service providers in the fields of design, consultancy or contracting. • To seek the participation of government departments and bodies, universities and other institutions and research facilities, with a view to encouraging the optimisation of railway operations especially in relation to railway track performance and economics. • To initiate sponsorship and / or co-operate with others in research development and evaluation of railway track and its components.

• To sponsor the development of realistic standards in respect of the track, its components and the practices employed in construction, operation and maintenance. • To conduct meetings for the purpose of bringing together entities interested in railway track and its associated disciplines amongst others of traffic and communications and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information thereon. • To disseminate information to and to seek technical and other data from members and other interested entities concerning the progress of research and new developments and to provide assistance in the evaluation of performance and economics of railway track and components. • To provide for the effective management, operation and development of the Association.

OUR VISION We aim to: • Work towards becoming the national representative of the rail track sector in Australia • Become a nationally representative organisation • Provide advice to industry about rail track sector training needs • Offer regular networking events in all regions of our representation • Do more to promote rail track standards • Build relationships with other rail track sector groups • Become involved in the technology road map • Build stronger relationships with senior rail track executives.
