The nuts and bolts to succeed
WITHa fixed focus on delivering exceptional customer service as well as supplying a diverse range of industrial fasteners, fixings, abrasives and tools to the construction and related industries, Ultimate Fasteners has had over the last 15 years, quite simply, the nuts and bolts to grow from a two-man operation into a thriving and responsive enterprise.
Opening its doors on January 1, 2008, Ultimate Fasteners was the conception of co-owners Dean Jones and Mark Shanahan, two colleagues who had spent over twenty years working together before biting the bullet to go out on their own.
Beginning with a small showroom, an office and some stock, Dean and Mark saw an opportunity in
the market that was too good to miss, and it wasn’t long before their perceptiveness, determination and hard work paid off.
Hiring their first employee just one month after commencing operation, the co-owners joined-up with Construction Supply Specialists (CSS) eight months later, forging an advantageous and valuable relationship to this day.
A leading buying, marketing and promotional group serving the construction, mining and industrial sector, CSS is a nationwide alliance harnessing the collective volume of around 80 businesses to generate corporate multi-national buying power, resulting in competitive prices passed onto the customer.
“We started Ultimate Fasteners in January 2008 and joined CSS by September that year. Basically, the names behind the brands, CSS have supported us very strongly from the beginning in marketing and dealing with suppliers. It has been a beneficial experience for us, and our membership has opened doors that we’d never have opened on our own, CSS’ marketing is something we hang our hat on,” Dean said.

Goulburn Valley but large portions of Victoria itself, Ultimate Fasteners have moved to 67 Williams Road, Shepparton, allowing the business once again to expand its operation, responding to ever diversifying volume and demand.
“When people walk into our new building, they will see the change. Not only is everything now under
the one roof, but we’ve added space to our showroom as well. When our customers enter the front door, they’ll be able to see everything they need set out from front to back before them, allowing us to serve them from the counter with greater speed and efficiency.
“People will see more products on display in each supplier layout
because as we’ve grown, so has our supplier offering, it’s very much a two-way street. Our Milwaukee Experience Centre has, for example, grown from its previous 2x2m space to its new 7x7m presentation in the new store,” Dean said. With a grand opening sale coinciding with end of financial year discounts taking place across
Thursday and Friday, June 22-23, the opportunity to see first-hand Ultimate Fasteners’ impressive and extended premises is simply too good to be missed and is the perfect chance to congratulate another of the region’s most inspiring entrepreneurial success stories as it takes its next forward step.
MAKE no bones about it, Ultimate Fasteners is a business that is squarely focused on providing its diverse clientele with quality assured service and competitive pricing.
Dedicated to supplying and maintaining a comprehensive range of fasteners, fixings, abrasives and tools for building, engineering, construction, and manufacturing as well as for the home handyman, the experienced team at Ultimate Fasteners offer leading brands of quality products backed by the very best in after sales care and service.
“We’ve always been a service orientated business,” said co-owner Dean Jones, “We make sure that we look after our customer base because at the end of the day it’s about the relationships you build. We’ve been in this business for 30 years, growing and diversifying our service and our product offering by being responsive to our customers’ needs. If they’ve got a
job to do, then we react to that; as our customers grow, we grow with them, and that’s why we have always put service first. It’s the core of what we do.”
With counter trade at the Shepparton branch central to the bustling business, Ultimate Fasteners takes its exemplary service on the road with its dedicated sales reps, hand delivering equipment and expert advice across the state, bolstered by its courier system which runs out of Shepparton daily.
“We go as far as Seymour in the south and up to Deniliquin in the north, across to Swan Hill, Echuca and Rochester. We cover a pretty big area that also includes Numurkah, Tocumwal and Cobram as well as Benalla, Euroa and Nagambie and loads of townships in between,” Dean said.
“We believe we go far and beyond the norm and sometimes you have to step outside the square to make things happen and we do that,” added co-owner, Mark Shanahan.
Holding fast to strong relationships
BEGINNING with nuts and bolts 15 years ago, Ultimate Fasteners has augmented its impressive product offering, conjointly responding with its clients to accelerating demand within the construction and manufacturing industry.
The business’ relocation to its new, larger site at 67 Williams Road is as much a reflection of its own success as it is of a thriving industry.
Swiftly responding to their customers by stocking materials to cover their needs from the start, Ultimate Fasteners has built steadfast relationships based upon reliability and trust.
“We started with fasteners because that’s what we loved doing, and back at the beginning of our business it was around 80 percent of what we did. Now, it’s closer to 65 percent of our market, it’s our core business and everything we’ve added on has also grown immensely with
it,” said co-owner, Dean Jones. Stocking a huge range of fasteners from premier brands Bremick and Hobson to unparalleled abrasives represented by Flexovit and Saint-Gobain to the leading tool trade names of Bordo, Kincrome, Milwaukee, Apex, IMPACT-A, Tridon Sheffield blades and beyond, Ultimate Fasteners has evolved to play an integral role in everything from engineering and construction, incorporating concrete panels to the structural steel market.
OVER 15 YEARS OF BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS...with trusted and reliable brands through their membership with Construction Supply Specialists (CSS), the relationship has been essential to Ultimate Fasteners’ success. In conjunction we’ve also engaged in a lot of rail projects that have happened both here and in Melbourne, undertaking several stations upgrades, one of which we are doing in West Melbourne currently. We’ve also been involved in the federally funded upgrades at Puckapunyal, so we’re pretty diverse in what we do,” said co-owner Dean Jones.
ANTHONY CLARKEAssistant manager Grant Casey
ACCORDING to Ultimate Fasteners’ assistant manager, Grant Casey, the decision to relocate the business to its more user-friendly and expansive premises at 67 Williams Road was based squarely on the need to respond to the company’s expanding and ever diversifying clientele.
“The new building can simply hold more stock and with more space we can set it up the way we want. Everything here is designed to be easier and more efficient and convenient for our customers,” Grant said.
When asked about how he enjoyed working alongside co-owners Dean and Mark and in jointly leading a skilled and experienced workforce, Grant said, “I love it! We’ve got two really great bosses and the banter amongst the team is obvious. Everyone here enjoys what they do, and everyone enjoys coming to work.”
THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP... For co-owner of Ultimate Fasteners, Mark Shanahan, the relocation of his business with Dean Jones represents a natural progression of being able to service bigger clients while remaining responsive to individual and existing clients. It also provides the space for his dedicated team to flourish on the job.
Co-owner and director Mark Shanahan
CHANGE is the lifeblood of progress, and after 15 years of growth the next logical step in Ultimate Fasteners expansion has arrived in the form of a new, one-stop shop at 67 Williams Road Shepparton.
For co-owner Mark Shanahan, the move represents not only another opportunity to further enhance customer service but provides the space for a more efficient turnaround of stock as well as improved working conditions for the entire team.
“With the capacity to move more stock up through the shop, we’re able to build on our customer service as well as take on bigger clients. With the inward and outward facility at the rear of the store, we can bring bulk stock in as well as turn it around effectively, sending it out to clients without delay,” Mark said.
KAYLENE McCormick has worked for Ultimate Fasteners for the past six and a half years and is the person to see when it comes to accounts.
Working alongside her colleagues, Sophie Dervish and Carole Moore, Kaylene is well placed to appraise the business’ accelerated growth, “The growth of the business has been phenomenal in the six or so years that I have worked here. When I first came on board, we had seven staff, so we’ve nearly doubled that and then of course, we’ve moved into this new, spacious building, which is exciting,” Kaylene said.
When asked to comment on what she sees as the attributing factors leading to Ultimate Fasteners’ on-going success, Kaylene said, “Well, I think it is the way Dean and Mark interact with everyone, from customers, to staff and everyone in between. They are awesome blokes to work for and I think that shows amongst the staff and in the business.”
