Advocate Art was founded in 1992, with a group of illustrators who liked the idea of having an agent but not the other things that often came with that. We call our ethos four “F.A.C.T.s”: Fairness, Ability, Creativity and Trust. It’s about doing the right thing and being with the right people. We think our principles set us apart from conventional agencies, sticking to them has meant we have attracted the most creative illustrators and artists who in turn attract (with a little help) the best clients. The people we represent are perfectly able to conduct their own affairs but like working with Advocate Art because we offer value to them in the services we provide. Clients are assured that we represent artists that are like-minded professionals, pre-vetted and able not only to get the job done without fuss, but also to surpass expectations. It’s their choice to be with us, we have a high retention rate - with the most popular artists in our group being with us from the start! We were one of the first Agencies to give direct client contact with our illustrators, allowing creativity to flow without being diluted in translation. We were one of the first to offer re-sales as an important secondary income to artists. Now we have gone beyond that too, with the development of an on-line portal - ARTicle which enables artists to have transparency into the back office functions of the business, such as royalty management and credit control, amongst other things. Business is all about relationships, which is why we have a very high artist to agent ratio, clients often use us as artistic advisors, project managers as well a trend forward resource for pre-qualified talent. ALEXANDRE AFFONSO
Alex is a full-time freelance illustrator and infographic artist currently working between SĂŁo Paulo (Brazil) and Porto (Portugal), with more than 20 years of experience in the creative industry. After graduating with a degree in Advertising, he was selected for a program for young talents to work for a leading newspaper in Brazil, where he stayed for 8 years and learned the secrets of visual journalism. In the last 10 years, Alex has been working exclusively as a freelance and in this period he has expanded his field of work from journalism to cover advertising and textbooks. He aims to create a graphic work where visual elements replace texts, communicating ideas quickly and engagingly, translating a complex piece of information into something comprehensible even for a child. To achieve this self-motivated goal, he uses vector for 90% of his drawings, trying to be minimalist whenever it is possible, and uses a limited colour palette and basic geometric shapes.

AMANDA SHUFFLEBOTHAM
Amanda Shufflebotham is a designer and illustrator based in the historic Welsh/English border town of Chepstow, where she lives with her partner and two sons. She was born near Oxford and attended Swindon School of Art and Design in the late 1980s, which led to a career in publishing, design and advertising. In 2004, while her sons were very young, Amanda branched out into freelance work and it was at that point that her approach became more illustrative. Amanda’s background in graphics is evident in her design style: bold colours and geometric shapes take centre stage. Her designs have been used for greeting ware in the UK and the US, and in the tourism sector. Amanda now works from her home studio, and when she’s not illustrating and designing she is spending time with her family and enjoying her garden. In fact, if Amanda hadn’t gone into design she would have like to be a landscape gardener as the shapes and textures of foliage have always enchanted her.

CELESTE AIRES
Celeste was born in San Juan, Argentina, a town by the Andeans. She grew up in a house with a big garden, two dogs and a little sister. She always loved drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, and she always had a big imagination. Because of this she decided she wanted to be an artist for a living. She studied hard to get a place at a good high school where you could choose a specialty after the second year. Of course, she chose art and design. After high school, she went to Art collage for a little while, but then she dropped out and became a trekking guide. She spent several years working in the mountains and climbing around the world. In 2011, she moved to Buenos Aires to study Animation Direction and she became a professional illustrator a year after that. She loves mid-century modern styles, geometrical shapes, adventure tales, chocolate, mountains, being outdoors, animals and plants. She also loves learning new things, so she’s always doing workshops and courses, such as silkscreen, letterpress, poster design, and character design, among others. She thinks her work is a bit nostalgic, simple and funny. She wants to evolve as an artist and explore and mix all medias and techniques that she can. By the way, her name means Light Blue Air!

JENNY WREN
Jenny wren has created illustrations for various book publishers including Usborne publishing, Paragon, Caterpillar books, Igloo books and Lake press. She loves to illustrate maps, busy scenes, and animals of all shapes and sizes. As well as producing artwork for book projects, Jenny also loves to design greetings cards, featuring fun characters, decorative florals or trend led icons.

KAY COENEN
I am Kay Coenen, Infographicmaker based in the Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I work for various Dutch media, magazines and newspapers. I give guest lectures about my work and infographics on Art Academies or Universities in the Netherlands. What I like about producing infographics is that every question of a client is a new challenge. I like to dive into the subjects and learn new things every day. For a new project I choose a style that fits the client identity the best. And try to make a production that fits the clients needs the best. This everyday challenges makes this work so interesting! In my spare time I like to work on my Comics stories (watch some on www.funkyrobot.nl) with subjects robots, rockets and other futuristic subjects. I also like to work on classic cars and motorbikes which sometimes also influences my work.

LILA KALOGERI
Lila Kalogeri is a freelance illustrator, comic artist and painter. She graduated from the UCE, Birmingham, with an MA in Visual Communication in 2002 and has since been working for book publishers, magazines and agencies. She has been commissioned for various painting projects and her work has been displayed in numerous exhibitions in Greece and abroad. Most of her work is computer generated, but she also enjoys working with traditional media. In 2015, she received a merit at the EBGE illustration and graphic design awards for her illustration of “Vres poios eimai” first readers book. She recently launched “My lovely Crete”, a collection of illustrated souvenirs about the island of Crete, where she grew up and is currently based.

MARC ETIENNE PEINTRE
My name is Marc-Etienne. I was born in Troyes, France. I then moved in Lyon where I studied Illustration at Emile Cohl school, I now live in Paris where i work as a freelance illustrator. I think sitting too close from the TV watching Cartoon network when I was a boy, is what got me into drawing. But it’s my teenage skaboarding years that really drew me into illustration, enjoying the work of people such as Jeremy Fish and Evan Hecox. I like to draw colorful and humourous scenes with playful characters. I worked for several advertisement campaigns but I really like magazines’ related work as well as children’s books illustrations because it allows me to have a more offbeat approach and funnier results. In the world we live in working with computer graphics is a must, but i also enjoy a more hands on approach for my personal work. For example I really like watercolour but I also use linocut for its raw and simplistic result.

MARC PATTENDEN
Marc is a self-taught illustrator from Lewes, East Sussex. As a child he drew endlessly, but it wasn’t until his son was born that he rediscovered his love of doodling – both as a way to entertain his son, and as a source of entertainment for himself! Marc has since graduated from doodling and now works full time as an illustrator (although he would argue that there is very little difference between his doodling days and his present practice). He spends much of his time (fueled on strong tea) drawing silly pictures containing forlorn looking yetis, giant purple robots and the like. Marc works digitally with the aim of creating colourful engaging work, full of texture and atmosphere. He finds inspiration in gallery shows, museums, books, and funny things his 3 year old says (he was talking about flying jellyfish recently, which Marc feels he should definitely draw). Marc always finds the process of illustration a totally joyful experience and is very glad to have made a career out of it. He hopes to be drawing daft pictures for many years to come.

SARAH GOODREAU
Sarah Goodreau received a B.F.A in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Now based in London, she works with various publications around the world. Her passion is storytelling through imagery and hopes to continue on with this in many different forms. Sarah’s work is a mix of the whimsical and the strange, focusing on humor and beauty. She also art directs for Wizard Fingers, a small animation project she works on with her partner.

TERESA BELLON
Teresa Bellon born in Albacete, Spain in1987 . She was a few years wandering around life, she was studying different things and doing drawings just for Mom and Dad; until she finally accepted his fate and did a Illustration Course in Madrid. As a result, she began working for national and international clients and she has made several exhibitions. Their references are mainly Portuguese and Nordic illustrators of children’s books. His drawings have a touch naive, reduced ranges of colours and simple compositions. Finally, Teresa doesn’t stay at home waiting for inspiration, she sets out to find it. So she travels, buys illustrated books and walk a lot for Madrid.

CARLO MOLINARI
Carlo Molinari was born in Santeramo, Italy, where he grew up and now lives. All his life, he’s had a passion for comics, especially those drawn realistically in a personal style. He began his education at the Liceo Artistico and went on to study painting at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bari. He is inspired by the work of comic authors, like Sergio Toppi, Dino Battaglia and Attilio Micheluzzi, and by that of painters like Paul Gauguin, David Hockney and Lucien Freud. He likes to experiment with new media and with drawing the human figure. As far as working on the computer goes, he likes the different possibilities that each item of software has. He has worked with airbrush, acrylic colours, oil painting, pastel and other media. He likes to experiment and to play and does so with new digital media. In his spare time, he dances Argentine Tango. If he weren’t an artist, he would be a handyman, actor or dancer. Alternatively, he would be a character from a Moebius or Micheluzzi comic strip. He likes to listen to jazz, rock and classical while he works and taught himself English purely by using computer software!

FIONA OSBALDSTONE
Born and bred in Kent, Fiona loved painting as a kid and used to paint her versions of the Disney Characters. She always wanted to do something with art and went to the Kent Institute of Art & Design to see what the possibilities were. David Shepherd and Norman Rockwell are great inspirations for her because of their detail and vastly different styles. She usually works in watercolour but can also do pencil or acrylics depending on what is required. Her style is realistic, but not photo realistic, she just likes it to look as it’s meant to be. Her work includes natural history, botanical, people and scenes. Outside of the artistic field, although not too far removed, she loves pottery and making and selling her own pieces. She enjoys photography as well as cycling but she’s not too good at that and invariably ends up in a ditch.

JENNIFER SKEMP
A love of art came at an early age for Jennifer. There was no eureka moment that sparked her artistic interest; She‘s just always enjoyed the feeling of creating something, putting something from your head on paper — and the journey you go on, while doing it. Growing up in Surrey and now living in Chichester, Jennifer finds inspiration in books, the outdoors, films, games, and TV shows, but it is the pure pleasure of creating that is the true driving force behind her artwork. At Aberystwyth University, she earned herself a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and now her work revolves around traditional drawing, illustration, life drawing and digital media. Her artistic interest has always been creating engaging compositions through proper use of marks, light and drama.

JEREMY PYKE
Jeremy began his illustrating career in Bath, England, in 1988, as an airbrush artist, creating artwork for children’s books. He built up a large commercial client base working for many major companies producing packaging and advertising artwork. Over the years, he moved onto other styles and media: watercolour, oils and so on. He now also uses computers for a variety of illustration projects, for example, instruction manuals, 3D models of buildings and 3D animation. Jeremy considers himself to be a versatile artist, able to deal with any number of subjects and styles.

JIM MITCHELL
Jim has been producing commercial illustration work for many years. He has been an associate member of the Guild of Aviation Artists, and illustrated several books with aviation themes. He also produced illustrations for marine and military books, architectural work and illustrations for packaging. He combined his practical design career with a successful career as a senior lecturer at an Art School and College in Somerset. The areas of his work expanded through the 1990s and up to the present day, including many jigsaws, children’s books, greetings cards ,calendars and reference books on military uniforms. He tends to work in water based colours, watercolour and gouache, building on that with coloured pencil and finally, pastels.

A former biologist turned science illustrator, trained at the Science Illustration program at UC Monterrey Bay. He worked early on his illustrator career for field guides of plants and animals of his country of origin, Colombia, and now owns and works in his art Studio, LIBERUM DONUM, doing concept art, storyboarding and his passion: comic books.

MAT EDWARDS
Sponge-like, commercial artist Mat Edwards draws inspiration from the things he sees in daily life. Immersed in his art with his brain “always ticking over”, in his words, or “away with the fairies”, according to his wife, he can create everything from the thoroughly modern to wouldhave-sworn-it-was-vintage style designs, with the power of precision and repetition as key to the appeal of his works. From the Potteries, he has been passionate about art since childhood, and counts artists such as Chris Foss, Tim White and Rodney Mathews amongst his early inspirations. Such was Mat’s talent at school that he won a four-year apprenticeship with Johnson Mattheys, where he learned at the feet of some tremendously skilled artists such as map makers and engravers. While his talent and eye for detail is a constant, his technique has evolved from using purely traditional materials such as pencils, gouache, stretching paper to using almost all-digital methods – creating works just as before, but without, he says, the clutter ….. after all it is all just “well arranged blobs of paint or pixels.”

SIMON MENDEZ
Simon Mendez was born in York and has always loved to draw. He combined his love of the natural world and his meticulous mind when he gained a BA degree in Scientific and Natural History Illustration at Fylde College in Blackpool. Although the majority of his work still concentrates on portraits and aspects of nature, he enjoys illustrating many different subjects and developing different skills and styles in all media as well as recreating vintage and classic styles to help illuminate his interpretations in a visual explanation. Simon spends his spare time away from the drawing board with his kids colouring in and building stuff!

VAL WALERCZUK
Val is primarily an illustrator, but he also likes to dabble in graphic design, photography and fine art; he feels these all inform his process. He additionally has years of experience in designing and advertising as well as working for publishing houses in Poland and abroad. Although Val has technical skill in his work, he also likes to explore the creativity and concept of an image, after all without creativity art isn’t much fun! He is always on the hunt for new inspiration and ways to improve his craft; recently he has taken a lot of inspiration from nature and photography. Val’s goal is to create work that is visually impossible in the natural world and fill in gaps that mediums like photography can’t.

WALTER GARCIA
Walter was born in Argentina in 1956. Now he lives in Buenos Aires. When he was a child, he spent his afternoons reading comic about superheroes like Superman or Batman. He was fascinated by those illustrations and he began to draw, copying the pages. . Walter studied drawing at a high school. His degree was Publicitary Drawing, which then became Graphic Design. After that he improved techniques by himself trying to reach a good quality in his works. Walter describes his work as Digital Illustration. He works through the internet, he makes illustrations for interesting books and spends a lot of time in front of a screen.
