About Advocate Art

Advocate Art was founded in 1992, with a group of illustrators who liked the idea of having an agent but not the other things that often came with that. We call our ethos four “F.A.C.T.s”: Fairness, Ability, Creativity and Trust. It’s about doing the right thing and being with the right people. We think our principles set us apart from conventional agencies, sticking to them has meant we have attracted the most creative illustrators and artists who in turn attract (with a little help) the best clients. The people we represent are perfectly able to conduct their own affairs but like working with Advocate Art because we offer value to them in the services we provide. Clients are assured that we represent artists that are like-minded professionals, pre-vetted and able not only to get the job done without fuss, but also to surpass expectations. It’s their choice to be with us, we have a high retention rate - with the most popular artists in our group being with us from the start! We were one of the first Agencies to give direct client contact with our illustrators, allowing creativity to flow without being diluted in translation. We were one of the first to offer re-sales as an important secondary income to artists. Now we have gone beyond that too, with the development of an on-line portal - ARTicle which enables artists to have transparency into the back office functions of the business, such as royalty management and credit control, amongst other things. Business is all about relationships, which is why we have a very high artist to agent ratio, clients often use us as artistic advisors, project managers as well a trend forward resource for pre-qualified talent. It is for these reasons that Advocate Art has become the largest illustration agency around and I’d like to think one of the most respected but- we understand we didn’t get that way by acting like the biggest. Come and find out for yourself…

My name is Erin Brown, I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1990. I spent my childhood pouring over books that were full of quirky, colourful, ink splattered illustrations, such as Quentin Blake who even today is an inspiration to me. I studied Fine Art: Painting at the University of Ulster. I now live in Newcastle Upon Tyne with my husband and our little dog, Daisy. I am driven by a joy to create, a love of colour and of the beautiful things in this world. I love seeing bright colours splash across the page. I use a mixture of watercolour paint and inks on watercolour paper. The inks I use are highly pigmented acrylic inks which have incredible colour intensity and staining power. I also love to experiment with glitter and metallic paints, anything that adds beautiful colours and textures to my work. I work from my home studio in Newcastle, where I am kept company by Daisy and the radio.

I trained as a teacher and spent 9 years teaching 6 and 7 year olds. When I stopped teaching to have a family I started to rediscover my interest in art. It began as an absorbing hobby and over time has grown to become a profession. I feel very lucky to be able to work at something I so enjoy doing. The hobby has got rather out of hand!

I have sold paintings at exhibitions and in galleries and also teach watercolour privately. (So I have gone from 6 and 7 year olds to 60 and 70 year olds!) Art can be a solitary occupation and it is great to meet others who are enjoying painting at the workshops, I run these largely at art clubs and societies. Working with Advocate Art has been amazing for me. I enjoy being given unexpected things to portray! I now try subjects that I would never have considered a few years ago.

I graduated from Staffordshire University in 2001 after studying Surface Pattern Design. I have now worked in the design industry for 15 years now, designing & illustrating for ceramics for Royal Worcester and for the latter 10 years at a major greeting card company in Northamptonshire. Recently I became a freelance Illustrator inspired by my kids, flowers & butterflies, and anything that makes a decorative pattern! I like to work with watercolour, pen & ink and Photoshop and would describe my work as classic, decorative and feminine! When I’m not painting or designing I love to create beautifully decorated cakes for friends and family and anyone who asks. I love musicals, chocolate, flowers, patterns, tea, wine, my family and the beach!

I grew up in a very creative home, my parents were artists collecting antiques and curios. Some of my earliest memories were of being taught the art of treasure hunting by my Grandma. I quickly learnt that beauty could be seen in objects which others would discard or not notice. With studies and a career as a Visual Merchandise Manager in a West End store I developed an eye for beautifully arranging objects, learning about balance and space. After a career break to have children, I became fascinated with old photography and started to create once more. My love of curios and my knowledge of display came together perfectly in my art. The objects I have curated over my lifetime I now meticulously arrange and photograph in my art. Very little photo manipulation is used to keep the images super real and honest. Recently my artwork has been exhibited at the beautiful ‘Town House Gallery’, Fournier Street, Spitalfields and appears on the Royal Academy website. I recently held a large solo art exhibition ‘A Curious Collector’ at Watford Museum.

After gaining my diploma for interior design I wanted to be more creative. So I went back to what I have loved ever since: making art! At the same time I love traveling and for a while I have tried to do both. After traveling and working in different countries all over the world for almost 10 years, I went back to Germany and spend a couple of years in the exciting city of Berlin. Today I am living and working in a former dairy in the very north of Germany, close to the Baltic Sea. I love nature and the sea and this peaceful area is the perfect place for me. Meanwhile I am working for a lot of companies in the wall art and homeware industry, but very much appreciate the freedom of working independently. Most of my designs can be called ‘mixed media’ because I often layer different techniques digitaly.

A babyboomer from Toronto, Canada, I’ve always been into the arts as a club performer, a DJ and music and video artist. Eventually, I got a straight gig, taught school for years, coached sports, produced musicals, and even wrote an international book series on writing skills for kids! Still, there was an unfulfilled spark ignited in my soul. I left teaching and became a born-again artist totally immersing myself in it. I feed off so many of the countless artists and musicians, past and present: and all the amazing anonymous spirits who transcend the trivialities of life and have lived to make the world a better place. For me, a photograph is a starting point. I look to push the image to a magic place, where reality meets imagination and where the viewer can escape for a moment.

Having moved around a lot over the years, from the Orkney islands to Bournemouth on the south coast of England, my love for the countryside and the coast inspire my illustrative style. I draw everything by hand and have a fine collection of pens! My favourite things to draw include animals, birds and flowers, drawing inspiration from the outdoors and being surrounded by nature. I like to incorporate pattern into my work and am especially inspired by Scandinavian and Paisley design.

I live and work in a little eco house in Newcastle upon Tyne with my husband and two children. I love to draw, design and make things. Since leaving Edinburgh College of art in the late 1990’s, I’ve worked in house, on a freelance basis, as an illustrator, product/ licensed character developer, a designer/maker for jewelry, greetings cards and wrapping paper......never a dull moment! My inspirations are many - from knitted toys, Japanese design, and Scandinavian Chic to Modernism, Dick Bruna and Info graphics. I’m drawn to anything that is quirky, humorous and minimal in design, and I hope that is reflected in my illustration. Working with Advocate, and the exciting projects they find for me, means that I am constantly developing and evolving my work, which makes me vey happy, especially when I’m telling stories though illustration.

My name is Jennifer Skemp and I am a Fine artist and Illustrator based in the South of England. I’m 22 and last year graduated from Aberystwyth University with a First Class Honours in Fine Art. My work revolves around traditional drawing, illustration, painting and digital media where I create engaging and imaginative compositions that build upon a narrative or subject. Heavily inspired by the outdoors, books, and historical artworks, I aim to use the beauty of the natural world and enhance/dramatize it by use of colour, shape, lighting, and perspective.

I was born in the Midlands in 1969. With poor eyesight as a child, as well as getting lost a lot, I developed a knack for taking mental fuzzy snapshots of the world to help myself navigate. These mental images were then frequently scribbled onto paper, in an attempt to clarify the blurred scenes around me. Encouraged by such comments as “come on Ant, stop squinting and draw a picture for your Auntie Margaret, techniques were nurtured at the same time as keeping me out of trouble (mostly). Later studying fine art and sculpture at art school, I worked in graphic and web design before becoming a full time freelancer. I now produce art from his studio in Hove, England.

After completing a BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Advertising, specialising in Illustration Graphics, Nicola’s career began as an Illustrator. Her career started when she joined Advocate Art and her Illustrations have been used for many different products from Children’s Books and Greetings Cards through to products such as mugs, placemats, fine art prints and CD covers. Her passion for experimenting has enabled her work to continually evolve and Nicola quickly discovered a talent for painting with oils. Her work uses movement and colour to create abstract, atmospheric pieces that convey the mood of the moment. Nicola’s inspiration comes from everyday things, from flicking through a magazine to purely observing the people and nature around her. Working from her garden studio, by the coast in East Sussex, where she lives with her husband and two children, provides her very own creative space where she can happily experiment with colours and textures, explore new techniques and materials and best of all, make as much mess as she likes!

I was born in Cheshire, England and studied at Stockport College of Art, following which I spent an informative period In an Advertsing Agency. Eventually working as a free-lance Artist gaining an International reputation as a Figurative & Fashion Artist. After many years experimenting and using most mediums, watercolour initially, graduating into oils and now mixed media allows me to work freely and with an invention of techniques. My work has evolved from the representational, through Impressionism to presetly tapping new areas of exploration whereby crteating a story or emotion, in some cases without an observational subject or viewpoint. Taking inspiration from my surroundings finding beauty & intrigue in imperfections which I try to create a tensions with unpredictable textures & methods. I am now living in glorious Pembrokeshire, Wales, and give thanks for the abundance of this beauteous Planet.

I live and work in South Devon surrounded by beautiful countryside and coastline so I am never short of inspiration for my work! I was brought up down here and loved drawing and making things from an early age. (My parents had to re-paper my bedroom, I was such an enthusiatic artist!) I completed my graphics degree in Bath and post graduate studies in Plymouth. I also lived in Paris for a few years which was a great adventure. I work in my small studio in the garden which is a tranquil space with great views. I genuinely love what I do and feel very excited (and lucky) each time I start a new piece of work.

I grew up in sunny Staffordshire and spent much of my childhood drawing and painting, collaging and doodling (ruining a few good carpets in the process!) and there was never any question I wanted a career in design...or “colouring in” as my family like to call it! I studied Surface Pattern Design at Staffordshire University and have worked in the greetings card industry for 17 years, with many clients! While I occasionally still likes to get messy with paint and glue, I prefer to work in Photoshop these days, while trying to maintain a fluid, natural feel to my work. I love textures and layering, but also strong linework and mark making. I’m often inspired by nature, whether there’s an amazing combination of colour, or an interesting perspective or composition. Other timesI just have to put onto paper the bizarre and wonderful images that are in my head, because a little bit of crazy makes the world a nicer place!

Born and bred in Kent, I loved painting as a child and used to paint my own version of the Disney characters. I’d always wanted to do something with art and went to the Kent Institute of Art & Design to see what possibilities awaited me. I was inspired by the works of David Shepherd and Norman Rockwell for their level of detail even though they had two diversely different styles. I usually work in watercolour but can do pencil or acrylics depending on the requirement. My style is realistic, but not photo realistic, I just like it to look as it’s meant to be. Outside of the artistic field (although not far removed) I love pottery and I make and sell my own pieces. I enjoy photography as well as cycling – but I’m not too great at it and invariably end up in a ditch.

Liz and I (Kate) have created art together since leaving Stafforshire University in 2001. We both gained a first class degree in Surface Pattern Design, a very broad course, which allowed each student to find their own strengths. During this time I became passionate about colour, often experimenting with bold shapes, combining pattern, collage and mixed media. Liz edged more towards illustration, she focused more on finer detail and line, soon finding a real style of her own. We both still very much work with the same set of skills, mostly working together on commercial briefs, Liz sketching and then passing along to me to colour up. However when it comes to a one off fine artwork, we go our separate ways a little and let our individuality show through! Our adventure as artists began back at Mum and Dad’s in the bedroom we grew up in! Turning our beds into desks! We now work at Liz’s house in a small studio, that’s full to the brim with paints, collage papers, children’s books, sketch books, it’s certainly the messiest room in the house!

I live and work in a tiny victorian house on the edge of Chorlton meadows/nature reserve with my 2 cats. I’ve been freelance in illustration for over twenty five years and before this I worked as an animator for five years. For the past year I’ve been developing my work for licensing and would love to see some of my ideas on products, wall art and more cards. I always have a head and sketch book full of ideas and I love working to commission and bouncing ideas around with an art director or one of my agents at Advocate Art. I can’t think of anything better I’d rather do than go into my studio everyday, supervised by my 2 cats, radio on or some jazz or motown to tickle our ears , tea and biscuits at the ready and create pictures all day.
