“It honestly felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest,” says David Thomasson of the pain he experienced during his heart attack. “I thought heart disease was something that happened to old people.”

After examining him, the cardiovascular team at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas told David he needed quadruple bypass surgery and explained how a pump would take over for his heart during the procedure. “It’s a really amazing machine,” he says.

Today, David is going strong. And he’s extremely grateful both for the care he received and the Heart-Lung machine which saved his life. “I gave it a big hug when I saw it,” he says.

PRE-RECESSION BLINDERS ARE OFF

It now appears that Dallasites had the best vision

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but the days of blindly buying things for ourselves are over. Forever. And ever.

That’s what the national media says: that Americans’ general lack of wealth is contributing to more sustainable personal spending, that today we’re spending disposable income while for the past 20 or 30 years, we’ve been spending everything we had plus a lot we didn’t.

It’s an interesting thought, isn’t it, that the economic crisis has permanently changed our lives, that we’ll never again live beyond our means and that in the future, we’ll always do what’s “right” economically, and we’ll always use our heads before spending money instead of

just buying whatever we see advertised on TV as long as we still have some plastic in our pocket.

The national media experts say we’re volunteering more, attending more cultural events with family and friends, spending more time together talking and, even though we’re still going to the malls, we’re not spending as much money there because we’re just using malls as places to hang out.

It’s good to know that facing down economic Armegeddon has done so many good things for our lives.

What intrigues me is that a lot of us don’t know which way the wind is blowing, even if there’s a flag right in front of us. We depend on the cues of others to determine our direction, and we feel intimidated if we make a decision that goes against the grain, even when we’re right. It’s not so much herd mentality as it is fear of being wrong alone. Being wrong together is OK, but being wrong alone is flat-out scary.

here. The schools are better out there, so the thought process went, the buildings newer, the houses bigger and the streets smoother.

But now that so many of us supposedly can’t afford to live too far from work, and we don’t want to be too far from schools, and we want to make sure our kids experience all that life has to offer, living here where we live is starting to look better to a lot of suburbanites. Dallas is a city that, despite its well-known problems, has never been more vibrant. Many of our neighborhoods are on the upswing. Our public schools, while not perfect, have improved. Our public transportation, while still limited, is expanding. For better or worse, we’ve invested a lot of our tax dollars Downtown, and the place is starting to look good even if there’s still plenty of room for improvement.

Come to think of it: Isn’t that what most of us around here have always been doing?

PATIENT QUOTE OF THE

BACK TALK

ANOTHER TAKE ON TITHING

Your article on tithing in the recent Advocate was of interest to me (“Opening Remarks”, January Advocate). The question has been amply answered in the Bible in Malachi 3:912, II Corinthians 9:6-15, and etc. The basic question is not gross or net income. What is really being asked is “How little can I give without making God mad at me?” We should also ask the question, “What formula do I want God to use in answering prayers, granting protection, blessings, etc. Do I want him to deduct for mistakes, failure, blunders, disobedience, etc.?” The tithe is only the floor. “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,” reads II Cor. 9:6. For 63 years, we have practiced this. We were examined by the IRS five straight years. They finally flagged our account as “exceptional charity giving”. Ha! We have been abundantly blessed, but that is not the goal. I am not interested in what will put a smile on my face. When I stand before GodI want to see a smile on his face, and to hear Him say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

AnHEB could make my head explode (“HEB to Dallas: Sooner rather than later?” Advocate Back Talk Blog). We live very close to that area, currently shop at Kroger for meats and proteins; Central Market for produce and wine; Super Target for pantry, sodas, and everything else; and occasionally end up at the Tom Thumb when we need a single ingredient for something since it’s the closest.

11 Keys to Remodeling Success!

When done right, a home remodel is nothing less than the realization of your vision. If you’re like many of our clients, your “mind’s eye” sees a classically beautiful, functional home that will deepen your daily enjoyment and special occasions for years to come.

The key to your project’s success is communication throughout the process. The elite remodelers in Dallas each have a time-tested project management system that values keeping you educated and informed throughout the process. But to maximize the project’s success, you’ll also need to know how to stay involved and communicative at each stage:

During the sales & selection process:

1. Try to be flexible in scheduling appointments. It’s a good sign when the contractor doesn’t have the most convenient evening and weekend hours to meet with prospects. When you do make a choice, you’ll be glad to know your contractor spends more time working on building projects than selling prospects. This isn’t a high pressure sales industry. For the elite remodelers, it’s about quality of work and referrals.

2. Be prompt and try to avoid cancellations and postponements. Good contractors always keep their appointments, even though their schedules are booked solid in advance. Estimates should be free, but a loss of time is costly to contractors.

3. Share your “vision” with specific detail. The more you can tell a contractor about what you would like, the better the quality of feedback and the more specific cost estimates you’ll get in return. Your specificity will allow the contractor to educate you on all the decisions you’ll need to make.

4. If a contractor doesn’t win your business, provide constructive feedback with a quick phone call or email. The contractor, the industry, and homeowners like you all benefit as contractors learn what clients need.

During the project:

5. Take careful notes during the “Kick-Off” meeting. Here, the Project Manager reviews the scope of the work, sets scheduling expectations, and gets your project ready for delivery. He discusses your ideas and concerns and thoughtfully answers all of your questions So ask away, because this is the ideal time to do it.

6. Return all calls promptly. Often, your Project Manager is awaiting a decision from you, and work may be delayed until you call back.

7. Don’t be alarmed at the sight of small flaws in the paint or a smudge on the bathtub. Those cosmetic fixes are perfected by the end of the process and before the final walk-through. If you think of cosmetic changes you’d like at this point, feel free to ask how that will affect schedules and costs.

8. Be prepared to make payments in a timely manner. Payment schedules are prepared when the contract is signed, and remodelers adhere to the established milestones to maintain budgets. Be aware that change orders cannot be allowed to delay milestone payments.

At the conclusion:

9. Be thorough in your examination of the finished work during the walk-through with your Project Manager. Your PM will complete all

items on the punch list, but this isn’t the time to think of new touches. Think of final touches during the process so that the remodeler can operate within the framework of the established schedule.

10. Be honest when you complete your customer satisfaction survey. Specific constructive criticism will enable contractors to better understand client needs, resulting in a steadily rising level of service in the industry. Of course, builders and their teams of skilled trades love to be recognized for the fine details of their work, as well as their professionalism.

11. Support your contractor’s achievement of your vision with referrals. The best “thank-you” a remodeler can receive is a new customer who was inspired by your project. We are thrilled to say that most of Bella Vista Company’s customers are the friends and family of delighted customers we’ve proudly served. See what they had to say at bellavistacompany.com.

LAUNCH

SCOTT TRENT is a metal sculptor with a Lakewood studio, and he teaches digital collaboration classes at UTD, where he is working on a doctorate degree. He’s also the mastermind behind the Henderson Art Project, which debuts this spring. The project, backed by Andres Properties and Phoenix Property Co., is a competition for Texas sculptors and offers $12,000 in annual prize money. The urban art project will select seven sculptures to be placed on Henderson Avenue the first year. Judges will decide one winner, and the public at large will get to cast ballots and select another. The seven sculptures will stay in place for two years, and the following year, seven more sculptures will be selected. So eventually, there will be a rotating gallery of 14 sculptures along Henderson. The deadline for artists to submit applications is Feb. 19, and the art will be placed on the street at the end of March.

How did you become a sculptor?

I had a silkscreen business for nine years, and I’ve done a lot of other things, too. But I found myself sitting in a warehouse pushing a squeegee, and I realized I wasn’t pursuing my passion. I like to work with metal because it’s heavy; it’s tactile. I want people to touch it. It’s permanent. It’s rough. It’s the perfect medium for me. I’ve been doing it about eight years, and I’m still at the beginning of my career.

What is the idea behind the Henderson Art Project?

There are always a lot of people who want to show your work, but it’s almost always for free. People think you should be paid with this thing called “exposure”. They say, “If you put your work here for free, think of all the exposure you’ll get.” And there are times when that works, but if your art isn’t put in

the appropriate context, you’re not getting quality exposure. About 50 percent of my income is from art, so when I think of something, I think about it in terms of whether it’s worth my time and whether it’s a good business decision. So I wanted to make this a different business idea from anything else that’s out there. There is $12,000 in award money. The artists who exhibit each get an $800 stipend. That’s huge. You never see that.

WhY dId You WAnT To do An urbAn ArT projecT?

In a gallery, you have white walls and good lighting and everything. I want to put fine art out in the street. So your lighting is a street light or a car that’s passing by. A good example is the sculpture that I placed at 2323 henderson (it’s a 6-foot-tall sculpture made of red I-beams). I went out there to take a look at it, and there were footprints all over the top of it. That’s urban art. There’s no one there to say, “don’t touch the art.”

IS ThIS projecT onlY for SculpTure?

I am almost 100 percent sure that everything we put out there this year is going to be a sculpture. but I don’t want to limit it. I’m really hoping that the art community will come out and express themselves in this environment. I would like for 2d artists to think about how to present their art in this way.

hoW dId You geT The AndreS broTherS Involved?

They’re the reason this is happening. Andres properties and phoenix property co. are putting up the prize money, and they’re making it happen. I met Marc and roger Andres through their mom, ruth Andres, who is a great supporter of the arts. She bought some of my art, and she likes to get to know artists, so she and I became best buds, and now she’s one of my biggest supporters. Marc and roger are really involved in the art community, and that’s why they get it. They know how important art is in the community.

WhAT’S In IT for TheM?

To do this project, it had to benefit everyone. There is money to pay the artists, there’s quality exposure, it builds the culture of the area, and it fits into the business model of the street. It’s a win for everybody. Another stakeholder is the merchants on the street. It draws attention to them, and we’re getting them involved with the balloting process.

more on scott trent

WhAT elSe c An You Tell Me AbouT The projecT?

I’m really excited about our panel of judges. We have about 30 judges. We’ve had a lot of pushback for having too many judges, and that’s coming from the traditional, established art community. It’s difficult to get three judges to agree. You almost never see more than two judges. but in our case, we’re doing all the judging digitally. They don’t have to be all in the same place at the same time, and they have a week, so they can judge at their own pace.

Who Are The judgeS?

We’ve got edith baker, who had the edith baker gallery in dallas for a long time. We’ve got jed Morse, who is curator at the nasher. And pat porter, who was the assistant to ray nasher for many years — she is executive director of the north Texas business for culture and the Arts. It’s been amazing the people who are participating. As your average artist, you would never get in front of these people. but it works the other way, too. The judges get to come down and see what some emerging artists are doing, so I hope they have a good time with that. It’s not exclusive, and it allows the whole community to collaborate.

And The coMMunITY geTS To voTe, Too, rIghT?

Yes. It was Marc’s idea to let the people vote. The community at large is another stakeholder. So there will be balloting at the restaurants and other places on henderson, and those votes will select a people’s choice winner. even if it becomes a popularity contest, that’s oK because people are getting involved with art.

WhAT IS Your goAl WITh ThIS projecT? I want to make it more popular. I want to increase the money and have an art fair or an art walk. It can only get bigger, and it will get bigger by getting people involved. In time, people will have ideas for it that I can’t even imagine now. I’ve done my part, and now I’m putting it out there for everyone else. We’ve involved two companies out of a hundred that could participate. This is a model that isn’t just for henderson. It can happen anywhere. You just have to have the stakeholders come together and make it happen. —RACHEL STONE

cop at the top

Here in low-altitude East Dallas, he’s known as the commander of the Dallas Police Central Patrol Division, but Deputy Chief Vincent Golbeck has some high aspirations that have little to do with fighting crime. He became “sortof obsessed” with mountain climbing in the early ’90s, he says, after reading an article about Highpointers Club, an organization whose members aspire to reach the highest elevation in all 50 states. The officer concedes it’s absurd that a guy who grew up mostly in East Texas loved the mountains so much. His pancake-flat roots didn’t stop him from joining the club and embarking on the lofty goal — he has now reached every state’s high point save Hawaii and Alaska, and he has climbed Mt. Rainer

in Washington twice, most recently in July. “Some of the heights aren’t worth climbing, and you merely drive to them,” he says. “But others require much more energy and fitness.” It’s not easy to train for this sort of thing when you live in East Dallas, says Golbeck, who trains mostly on stair machines and with other exercises, such as

lunges, that strengthen climbing muscles. “I do envy those who live in the mountains,” Golbeck says. “I never feel prepared enough. One of the toughest climbs, to Gannett Peak in Wyoming, required a 24-mile trek before you even started the summit attempt. It really challenged me.” Hawaii’s 13,796foot Mauna Kea is on his schedule, but Alaska’s Mt. McKinley might not be in the cards. “It is dangerous, and I’m 51 years old. Older guys have done it, but I don’t know if my wife would go for the idea.” Though the 29-year veteran of the Dallas Police Department has been hit by falling rocks (one, a rather large boulder) and seen a couple close calls, he still hopes to go to Everest and “just” climb to the first base camp, at a mere 17,000 feet.

ENVISION YOUR FINISH-LINE MOMENT IN HIGH DEFINITION!

The City of Dallas has a program specifically designed to allow residents to petition for road humps (also known as road bumps) on a street, but it’s not a simple process, and depending on the average speed of cars on your street, it may cost you. If money is not a stop sign for you on the road to safer streets, here’s how it works:

1. Several requirements must be met for your street to be deemed eligible for the program, so first you need to see if yours qualifies. The four main criteria are that your street must:

Be at least 1,000 feet long and provide access to “adjoining lowdensity residential properties” (meaning single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes and fourplexes — not apartment complexes) Have only one traffic lane in each direction

Not be listed as an emergency response route by Dallas FireRescue or less

To find out if your street qualifies, contact the City of Dallas Public Works and Transportation Department at

214.670.4020. They will instigate a review of the location by Dallas FireRescue to confirm eligibility.

2. If your street qualifies for the program, you must petition for signatures from two-thirds of the households on the proposed stretch of road in order to install road humps. Once complete, the petition can be sent to: Road Hump Coordinator, Department of Public Works and Transportation, City Hall, Room L1/BN, Dallas, TX 75201.

3. Approximately three weeks after the petition is received, the city will perform a traffic study to determine the average speed of vehicles on the street. This will determine how much of the total cost the residents must pay.

4. Based on the findings, residents will have to decide whether they are willing to pay for their share of the road humps, each of which measure 12 feet long and 3 inches high, and cost $1,100. If the city finds that traffic violators are traveling at an average speed of 35 mph, residents are responsible for 100 percent of the cost. An average speed of 36 mph, however, reduces residents’ share to 80 percent; 37 mph reduces it to 60 percent; 38 to 40 percent; and if violators are driving at average speeds of 39+ mph, the city will foot the entire bill.

Occasionally, AMY MARKS comes home to find a bowling ball at her doorstep. “There’s no note with it or anything,” she says. “Somebody just left it and I have no idea who it was.” People bring them to her because she’s the bowling ball lady of Dallas. Instead of planting colorful blooms (she says she’s “lousy at flowers”), Marks paints bowling balls and arranges them in the garden of her Capri Drive home. “I’m up to 97 now,” she says. Marks is an artist who recently won accolades at the State Fair of Texas for her handmade dolls. But for fun, she searches thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets for old bowling balls. They’re harder to find than they used to be, she says. And many thrift stores don’t sell them for fear of some kid lobbing one across the store. Marks remembers that she and her nephew once found seven balls in one redletter day. The bowling ball garden of Capri Drive will continue to grow, she says. “Of course, now I want 100.” —RACHEL

DOGGIE DATING

$10 Dee’s Doggie Den owner Dee Fort knows that love for one’s dog can lead to romance. She’s seen it happen in her own life. Fort met her husband, Evan, in high school in Houston and briefly dated him. They reconnected years later, after she opened the first doggie daycare in Dallas, and Evan brought his dog in for grooming. That story, and those of friends who have found true love in the dog parks, prompted Fort to create an annual “singles mingle.” The first event last year drew 40 or 50 people, and she expects at least that many at this year’s event. “It’s the perfect ice breaker,” Fort says. “You both have a love for pets, and it’s an easy way to meet your friends and neighbors in a no-pressure environment, even if there isn’t a love connection.” She is requesting a $10 donation to support Animal Alert (find information in “What gives?” on page 18). THE WINETRIALS 2010 ($15) BY GOLDSTEIN AND HERSCHKOWITSCH >

Robin Goldstein may know more about cheap wine than anyone else. He is the co-author and guiding force of “The Wine Trials 2010”, the second edition of the book that rates 150 of the best wines in the world that cost less than $15. His method blind tastings and his results — cheap wines that have fared significantly better than more famous and more expensive ones — have infuriated the mainstream wine world. One eminent wine writer went so far as to call Goldstein’s approach “almost an anti-intellectual position.”

Which is an interesting thing to say, given that the book has a scientific advisory board and 30 footnotes, in addition to the 150 wine ratings. (Full disclosure: I participated in one of the blind tasting panels for the first edition in 2008.)

More than anything else, the mainstream wine world, which has so much invested in the concept that expensive wine is always better than less expensive wine, doesn’t like the idea that a wine can’t be judged by its price. I don’t know that I agree with all 150 wines in the book (and I’ve tasted all but 25 or so); many simple, fruity wines did better than they should have, and there aren’t enough rosés again this year. But Goldstein’s concept is sound. Price is a better guide to quality than a cute label, but it’s not the be-all and end-all the experts want us to think it is.

Here are three of my favorites from this year’s selections:

Chill this, and drink it when the summer heat makes you crazy. I tasted it with some wine types when I did a story about $6 wine a couple of years ago, and we were stunned at how well-made it was.

One of my all-time favorite wines — bring on the red sauce and Italian sausages, and marvel that a wine this well-made could be this inexpensive.

This sparkling wine from Spain is a step up from $8 cavas like Cristalino — a little richer and a little less tight (a wine term that denotes where the flavors seem crammed together.)—JEFF

WITH YOUR WINE

Last-minute spaghetti sauce

Spaghetti sauce in a jar is not necessary. This takes almost as little time, and it tastes more like tomato sauce and less like salt. Serve this over your favorite pasta and with the Vitiano. If you’re feeling adventurous, chop some onion, celery, carrot and bell pepper in a food processor so it’s very fine, and sauté in a little olive oil before you add the garlic and liquid ingredients.

Serves 6, takes about 20 minutes

1 28-oz can tomato puree

2 6-oz cans tomato paste

2 cloves garlic, chopped

1 Tbsp olive oil

2 bay leaves

Salt and pepper to taste

1 to 2 c water, red wine or white wine

1.Brown the garlic in the olive oil over medium heat in a large pot until the garlic is fragrant. Add everything else except the water or wine and mix well.

2.Add the water or wine a little at a time, until the sauce is as thick or thin as you like it (you may not use all of the liquid). Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer 10 or 15 minutes.

ask the WINE GUY?

Q. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST WINEPRODUCING STATE IN THE COUNTRY?

A. In 2008, California produced 90 percent of the wine made in the United States, according to the Wine Institute. That figure has remained consistent since 1995.

CAPELESS CRUSADERS

How little acts of selflessness make a big difference in our neighborhood

They can’t leap tall buildings in a single bound, and they won’t outrun a train, but these neighbors do out-of-theordinary things that improve our lives. They don’t act heroically for recognition — they typically laugh away the notion they’re heroes at all. These neighbors simply give of themselves because that’s how they tap their own sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

CARI WEINBERG

DOG’S BEST FRIEND

Cari Weinberg and her boyfriend have an understanding. any time either of them sees a stray or lost dog, they stop and help it. She once came home with a terrier, and he once brought a Great Pyrenees home. but about a year ago, Weinberg decided she wanted to do more for animals than giving shelter to the lost.

“I noticed that the shelter at Cedar Creek Lake was in big trouble and running out of food. They were going to have to close,” she says.

The community rallied to raise money and donations for the shelter, which is called the Cedar Creek Humane Society and is about an hour from Dallas. Weinberg went to work there as a volunteer.

“I can’t take in another dog, but I can do that,” she says.

She started out listing the shelter animals on PetFinder.com to try and find them homes, but she wound up also making extraordinary differences in the lives of a few castoff dogs.

“She’s a writer, and her write-ups [for petfinder] are hilarious,” says Krista Mcanally, the shelter manager. “She has driven out here in any kind of weather to take pictures of the dogs.”

The shelter, which is always full and euthanizes animals that have been there for months without being adopted, was a shock to Weinberg. Shelter workers often arrive to find that someone has thrown a dog over the fence overnight. They work long hours to help as many animals as possible in the space and time available. and

sometimes it’s not pretty.

“It’s been such an eye-opener to see how people discard their pets, and how unforgiving they can be of behavioral problems,” she says. “Someone brought us a lab they didn’t want anymore because it had chewed through two garden hoses. And that was it for them.”

She took special interest in a Shar Pei mix named Casey whose “number was coming up.” Weinberg posted Casey’s story and pictures all over the internet. She emailed everyone she could think of who

might be willing to help. At one point, Casey was adopted, but was returned because she didn’t agree with another dog in the house. Finally, a woman in North Carolina agreed to pay for the dog to be boarded to save her from euthanasia. Weinberg had submitted Casey’s story to Best Friends Dog Rescue, a unique no-kill rescue in Utah, which takes two dogs a week out of hundreds of applications. Casey “won the dog lottery” and was accepted. The same North Carolina patroness met Casey at the airport

in Las Vegas and drove her to Best Friends.

“I had been trying for years to get a dog into Best Friends,” says McAnally. “And Cari did it.”

Another time, she adopted a dog who was scheduled for euthanasia. And once, she arranged for five beagles to be flown, by private plane, to a shelter in Aspen, Colo., which had room because the population of stray and unwanted dogs there is low.

Weinberg beams when she tells the story. “And now, they’ve all been adopted,” she says. “They were all on the clock.”

She says she’s shed a lot of tears in the past year. She can’t save all the dogs from euthanasia.

But, she can save the ones she can save.

“It’s great to see a dog that was written off become such a great companion for someone,” she says. “I love to see those connections happen.”

JUDY LIIMATAINEN THE NEIGHBOR FROM HEAVEN

Judy Liimatainen is that lady tooling around in the bright yellow Mini Cooper with her 15-year-old Kairn Terrier, Zurk, and Boomer, the Westie pup.

She’s the petite 60-something blonde with the big smile and fabulous shoes who stops and talks to just about everyone she and Zurk and Boomer meet on twicea-day walks in their M Streets neighborhood.

To across-the-street neighbor Allison Lee and her family, Judy Liimatainen is “the Dallas Grandma”.

Call her the perfect neighbor. Liimatainen will water Lee’s houseplants, play with her dogs and feed her husband while she’s away. Liimatainen and her husband, Michael Evans, drove to

Houston for Allison’s sister’s wedding, “because they were invited, and they’re just that nice,” Lee says. And Liimatainen once stayed up all night with her while she passed a kidney stone.

“This woman is a great neighbor,” she says.

Liimatainen volunteered in Lee’s kindergarten classroom two or three days a week for three years, and she was a beacon of love for the students, Lee says.

“I can assure you their lives were forever changed having known her,” she says.

For Liimatainen, whose son and daughter-in-law just had a baby, children and animals are the jewels of life.

“If you can touch someone’s life just a little bit, it really can make

She always has kind words and listening ears, especially for young moms like Lee, whose family is far away.

The Liimatainens raised their kids mostly in California, on the opposite coast from most of their extended family.

They moved to Dallas from sunny San Diego five years

ago, and even though they’re about 560 miles from the nicest beaches in Texas (which ain’t no Malibu), they feel more at home here than in all their years way out West.

“Everyone here is so friendly,” Liimatainen says. “And we love living in the M Streets. We have the most wonderful neighbors.”

Many of Liimatainen’s neighbors would rank her at the top of the wonderful list.

“I know what it’s like when you have to take a sick child to the ER in the middle of the night,” she says.

Neighbors know Liimatainen will answer the phone any time. And they know she loves them.

“That’s what makes it a community,” Liimatainen says.

Barring a blizzard or a rainstorm, Darrell Wood can be spotted every morning purposefully walking the streets of his White Rock Lake area neighborhood.

“If you drive along Easton in the morning — every morning — you’ll see him picking up trash in the median for blocks and blocks. Keeping this neighborhood garbage-free seems to be his goal,” says Reba Liner, who works at Central Lutheran Church on Easton, which is on Wood’s daily route. Trash removal isn’t Wood’s sole goal — he’s also on the lookout for crime and suspicious behavior.

“When I’m out there, I have my cell phone with me and I’m actually doing my neighborhood crime patrol on foot,” Wood says. Once, he says, he caught two guys breaking into a storage building. “Picking up trash is a good cover for crime patrol,” he says with a smile. Woods, since moving to the area 1973, has served on the neighborhood crime watch and his homeowners association, where he was president in 2006-2007. He is on both the Garland Road Vision committee and the Dallas Crime Watch executive board. He rallies his neighbors to get involved, and he helps train others for volunteer organizations such as Citizens Helping in Parking Solutions (CHIPS) and the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Wood’s extraordinary amount of involvement is rooted, simply, in a desire to keep the neighborhood he and his wife, Kay, love “safe and sound,” he says. Most recently he saw the fruits of one of his endeavors as neighborhood association president come to fruition at the dedication of a playground in the Dixon Branch area.

“I went to a lot of meetings, worked closely with our city councilman and [other neighborhood associations] … and worked to get funding,” he says. The father of four and grandfather of 12 credits the neighborhoods’ collaborative effort with making the state-of-the-art playground a reality. “We have a very active community and a lot of really good people.”

1. Use compost (it adds life and energy to your soil)

2. Pull weeds (it aerates the soil, burns calories and some go great in salads)

3. Disinfect and sharpen all landscape tools (grass is supposed to be cut not beaten to death)

4. Mow higher (the roots will grow deeper and you will water less)

5. Plant at least one edible plant in your (it helps connect you to the earth)

5 DONT’S

1. Stop using salt based chemical fertilizer. (it burns the life and energy out of your soil)

2.Stop using herbicides (they kill trees and pollute our water)

3.Stop using pesticides (if you touch or smell it, it starts causing metabolic mayhem)

4.Stop over-watering (you are wasting money and stressing your plants)

George Emeza needed a new sport.

A running injury five years ago left him sidelined from his longtime exercise of choice. So he decided to train for a century bike ride with Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training program, which readies athletes and novices to participate in endurance events and raise money for blood cancer research and care.

“At first, it was much more of a personal goal,” says Teresa Keenan, who started dating Emeza five years ago.

After meeting people affected by blood cancers and hearing their stories, inspiration took hold, and their focus became more about “the cause”, and their personal fitness became the perk.

Keenan and Emeza took Team in Training workshops and loaded up their bikes every weekend for long rides with their teams. They completed 100-mile rides in California and Arizona, coming close to their goal of six hours. They threw fundraising parties in Lakewood with the help of Times Ten Cellars, Lakewood Tavern and singer/songwriter Stan Crawford.

Together, they would raise about $30,000 for cancer research and care.

After the first season, Emeza became a mentor and later, a team captain.

was certified as a cycling coach,” Emeza says.

His first assignment was to train a team of cyclists for a century ride in Arizona. Keenan would be the team captain.

Just as training started, Emeza noticed that he was “feeling a little fatigue-ish.”

“It turned out that I have lymphoma,” he says. “I was diagnosed in July and started chemo in August.”

The couple stepped back from leadership of the team, but neither wanted to stop training for the Tucson event.

Emeza was too weak to train on the week of chemotherapy treatments. The next week, he could take a couple of short rides. Then he could ride about half the distance of his teammates, and by the fourth week after treatment, he could keep up with the team’s long training ride.

Then came another chemo week. No treatment went by without several of his Team in Training friends tagging along for support.

“It was almost party-like,” Emeza says. “My friends were a great support, and it made a very difficult situation much more bearable.”

On the Saturday before his final chemo treatment, Emeza and Keenan rode 109 miles in about 10 hours.

“It wasn’t about time,” Emeza says. “It was really about enduring chemo and fighting the fight. It was about the challenge of the disease and facing it.”

He was the “honored hero” that day, riding as the living inspiration for others.

The couple flew back after the race, andEmeza had his final chemo treatment two days later.

Henderson Avenue is a restaurant and nightlife trend-setter

Henderson Avenue is the new Uptown. It’s the hottest restaurant and nightlife spot in Dallas. and it’s setting trends for the rest of the city.

at least, that’s what some people think, and there’s plenty of evidence to back up those claims.

The story of Henderson starts in the early 1960s, when grocer Dave andres started buying up buildings and land. about 10 years later, he started andres Investments, which was instrumental in reviving Henderson and Lower Greenville.

In the 1980s, the company became andres

Properties under the leadership of Dave andres’s sons, Marc and roger. They developed the retail and restaurant spaces near Henderson and Central expressway, and people from Highland Park and other parts of Dallas started crossing from Knox to Henderson for shopping and dining.

The area grew slowly. The andres brothers didn’t just develop property and sell it to the highest bidder; they leased and managed it. and they select the businesses and owners with care.

“We own all these properties, so we’ve been able to dictate and control what goes in,” Marc andres says. “We’re not going to lease to someone

who is a direct competitor of another business here. We don’t want four Capitol Pubs.”

That diversity of businesses is part of what keeps the area interesting and unique, he says.

In 2006, Andres Properties finally purchased the Jerry’s Supermarket at 2323 Henderson.

“We had been trying to buy it since 1982,” says Marc Andres.

And once they had it, the neighborhood experienced a burst of change. The old grocery has become an Andres flagship — a strip center with a sushi place, a high-end frozen yogurt shop, a wine bar and a seafood restaurant. And the redevelopment created a connection between the more recently redeveloped parts of Henderson and emerging developments.

After that, Andres acquired the Carnival Foods store that last year became New Flower Market.

When Hugo Galvan opened his restaurant, Cafe San Miguel, on North Henderson almost five years ago, it was still kind of a rough neighborhood. “People always say, ‘Oh, you were really smart,’” he says. “And I say, ‘No, I was just really lucky.’” He picked what would become one of the hottest addresses in Dallas for restaurants and nightlife.

Galvan recently added a patio to the front of his restaurant, which has become a must-have feature on Henderson.

There are 20-25 patios on Henderson, and few businesses are without one, which is another part of the street’s appeal. Hacienda on Henderson and Blue Collar Bar also built patios last year. And restaurant Park built its entire design concept around outdoor seating and activities — even the interior has a parklike feel.

“It’s fun because you can be sitting on the patio at Hacienda and see what’s going on over at Capitol Pub,” says Marc Andres. “The patios are a big draw, and the walk-ability.”

That’s one trend that carries over to Lower Greenville. Old-school steakhouse Kirby’s recently changed its name to WoodFire Kirby’s. With a new menu and interior design, which includes a patio with an outdoor fireplace, the owners are seeking a

young, hip clientele.

Chef Rene Peeters, who owned Watel’s in Uptown for decades, recently brought a new restaurant concept to Lowest Greenville, World Piece.Even though the neighborhood long has been known as a hotspot for clubs and stumbling college students, Peeters thinks the area will change, in part because of its location near Henderson.

“It looks like Henderson has a lot of new restaurants, and it’s doing pretty well,” Peeters says. “It’s a neighborhood that’s changing, and that’s the idea of moving down here.”

The Greenville AvenueRestaurant Association, which formed last year, is pushing for unity among restaurant owners, and its members envi-

sion a Lower Greenville that is more a destination for restaurant-goers, and less a stomping grounds for latenight partiers.

That’s in line with what Andres Properties, which owns a chunk of the retail space on Lower Greenville, wants for the area, too.

In some cases, it’s been a struggle. Benjamin Verdooren, who opened restaurant Zymology on Lowest Greenville in January 2009, closed it a few months later, despite good reviews. He blamed his location. “The building owners want it to become something it’s not,” he says, inferring that the neighborhood is still more of a club scene than a restaurant hot spot.

Peeters agrees that Lower Greenville has a late-night vibe. But he contends that the area always has had good restaurants. When winter is over, he plans to open an overhead door to create a patio feeling at World Piece.

“Lower Greenville wants to be a part of it, and blend into what’s on Henderson,” says Marc Andres.

A new baseball field at Winfrey Point could boost Little League participation in Dallas

Five-year-old Benjamin Smith anxiously awaits completion of renovations to a well-worn baseball field at White Rock Lake’s Winfrey Point.

“He eats, sleeps and breathes baseball … he already owns four bats, three gloves and a catcher’s mitt,” says his father, Keith Smith, a Woodrow Wilson High School grad and president of the Dallas Little League.

Construction of two full-sized baseball diamonds along with one new tee-ball field started in December and should be complete by April, in time for the Little League season opener.

The improvements could mean big

growth for the Dallas Little League, says Smith, who is as excited as his sons about the neighborhood’s new fields. Until now, there haven’t been adequate accommodations for a large league, so youngsters have been joining teams in suburban areas such as Garland or The Colony. “We live in an area that includes half a million people, but only 379 kids signed up last season,” he says. “Some of the littler ones join the YMCA, then as they get bigger, they often join the Spring Valley Athletic Association, or join a select or classic league.”

There’s nothing wrong with that, Smith says, but he would rather bring youth baseball closer to home, and make it more accessible to everyone.

“There are talented young athletes here who would like to play, but who don’t have a place to play,” he says.

Select leagues can cost upward of

$5,000 just to get started, he says. by comparison, Dallas Little League registration is $100 and includes the uniform. boosted by the upgraded playing fields, Smith aims to increase registration, which is already underway, from 379 members to 1,000 members this year.

The Little League raised $50,000 and agreed to contribute 30 percent of registration fees to the ballpark renovations, and the Dallas Park board unanimously approved the project. The city will fund labor and materials.

“When [the Little League] came to me about this, I was excited,” says Darren boruff, the Park board representative for Dallas District 9, which encompasses White rock Lake parks. “I saw the plans. and the board approved it unanimously. This is a first step in creating more youth sports in our neighborhood.”

boruff also has a son, age 10, who plays baseball for another league, though boruff says he would have liked having him play here at White rock.

“Dallas has been cramped when it comes to playing space — that’s no

secret … this should help them to build the league and keep people playing here,” he says. “The fields have for a long time been in a state of disrepair … this will be a win-win situation for everyone and a boon for the city.”

as part of a four-year deal with the city, the Little League created a game schedule that would not conflict with other events at Winfrey Point — most of the games will be played at about noon and later in the afternoon.

and if Smith has his way, the improved fields and increased membership will mean more exciting baseball. Last year his team missed the regional playoffs by one game.

“This will improve the quality of baseball in our area,” he says.

Smith hopes, with the continued help of multitude Little League supporters, to raise more money and eventually foster construction of more expansive baseball facilities in Dallas.

Downing Hill, a new retail store, has opened in the former Ole Moon space on Greenville. You may recall The Ole Moon closed in April after 30 years in business selling crafts, art supplies, cards and gifts. The new shop carries outdoor furniture and accessories featuring themed landscaped designs. “We are working with a local landscape designer to provide this additional service so we are not just ‘another garden shop’,” owner Tom Henderson says. Henderson will be bringing in special guests for weekend presentations and demonstrations on everything from landscape design to plant selection. You can catch Plano-based landscape designer David Castagno of the Landscape Studio (landscapestudio.com) on Saturday, Feb. 27 to discuss anything from your plant woes to your landscaping wish list. Call the shop at 214.887.1837 to sign up for a free 30-minute consultation. Visit downinghill.com for information on other scheduled events.

The Bump and Beyond, a baby planning and concierge service, was recently started by Lake Highlands and East Dallas residents Aryn Self and Angela Huston. Designed to guide their clients through the entire process of planning for a baby, services range from organizing the nursery, ordering baby announcements, and medical and baby assistance referrals to planning babymoons and baby showers. Self and Huston, lawyers by trade, were working for the same law firm when they discovered they were both pregnant with due dates only three weeks apart. After learning first-hand about all that goes into baby-planning and prep, the first-time moms saw an opportunity in the Dallas area with this burgeoning business model that’s becoming popular in some other large markets, and launched the new biz just a few months ago. Visit thebumpandbeyond.com to get more information and check out a list of services (all of which can be ordered a la carte if that’s your preference) or call 214.662.8656 to set up a complimentary consultation.

Jackie and Bill Marra opened On Wheels Computer Repair a year and a half ago in the old Hollywood Video Store on Northwest

Highway and Plano Road. Bill Marra has been in the computer-fixin’ biz for himself for the past 18 years. The couple have been Casa Linda residents for the past 10+ years and opted to open a store-front in the area to accommodate their

expanding client base. Customers can bring their computers to the shop, or the Marra’s offer a convenient in-home repair service if the thought of unplugging all those computer cords is enough to give you an anxiety attack. Jackie Marra explained that one of their most requested services is their virus scan and clean, which is priced at $95. Red Cat Consignment, located in the shopping center behind Green Spot at North Buckner and Northcliff, has closed its doors after only a few months in business. Dr. Dena Robinson, owner of Robinson Dentistry (drdenarobinson.com), has had her dental practice in the Lakewood area since 2004. Originally located in Casa Linda Plaza, Robinson moved into some new digs just down the street on 8940 Garland Road in 2007. Robinson lived in the Lakewood area during dental school and residency from 1995-2000.

After a quick stint in Chicago, she was excited to get back down to East Dallas to start her practice. “We wanted to live in Dallas, but we didn’t really want it to feel like Dallas,” says Robinson. She explains, “the Lakewood/East Dallas area was a no-brainer-type decision for us. We used

1 The Pearl cup (thepearlcup.com), located at Henderson and McMillan, is celebrating their first anniversary this month. The coffee shop has quickly turned into a local fave among latte and pastry connoisseurs in the East Dallas area. Co-owners Rita Davis and Carlene Saelg moved to Dallas from Austin in 2007. After a year of meeting new people and “learning to drive in Dallas without getting lost,” they realized they weren’t happy with their corporate jobs. Being the coffee enthusiasts they are, they started pulling together their plans to open a coffee shop that would “do things very differently from the chain coffee shops.” Davis reports, “since opening on Valentine’s Day this year, each month has been busier than the last,

and our customer base is wonderful!” The pair currently has their house on the market and is busy shopping for a home in the East Dallas area to be closer to their shop. “We just love the area. It has such character, and great energy— it’s so laid back and Austin-like,” says Davis. Stop in for a spell to get a quick shot of caffeine, or you’re welcome to cop a squat, pull out your iPhone, iPod and Mac, and stay for a while.

2 JBF (Justin Bowen Fitness), a personal fitness training facility, opened at 9010 Garland Road near the Suffer City tattoo shop. The 2,300-square-foot facility is owned and run by neighborhood resident Justin Bowden, who once worked as a personal trainer at the Casa Linda 24 Hour Fitness. Bowden plans to help his clients develop personal curriculums through one-on-one sessions and boot camps based on their goals — weight loss, muscle building, improved performance in sports such as running, cycling, football, etc.

“I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I’ve learned a lot. I’ve seen the inconvenience and poor service that people sometimes endure with personal training at a gym. I also have seen people who work out on their own who could be using time much more efficiently.” Memberships will run anywhere from $75$200 per month. Bowden says he’s happy to let you try out a free session. Call 214.321.9300 or visit justinbowdenfitness.com for information on memberships and classes or to schedule a free introductory session.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL VALENTINE ’ S D AY AMORE

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

So says the writer of 1 John (4:18). But if fear and love are mortal — if not immortal — enemies, then how do we perfect love in order to cast out fear?

Valentine’s Day month raises love to red levels. We want to tell our lovers how much we love them, and yet our conceptions of love are often misconstrued.

My 26-year-old expectant daughter confessed to me recently her fear every time her husband goes out of town. (Yes, permission granted to relay this story.) She becomes too consumed with worry that something will happen to him. She knows she needs to get a grip on it, but how?

Sometimes fear masquerades as love. When I asked Cameron why she fears bad things happening to Garrett, she said because she loves him and she doesn’t know how she would live without him.

Perfect love involves being all in. It makes you vulnerable to pain and loss, because you have set your heart on someone and hold nothing back. For her husband to suffer an accident means she will suffer along with him. A fatal fate will mean that a part of her will die with him. That’s the nature of love, and it’s not the product of fear.

Perfect love is not indifferent to tragedy. In fact, indifference is the enemy of love, more so than hate. Love is always engaged. It weds two hearts for better or worse.

The answer then to gnawing fear is not caring less or caring more but caring differently.

Caring less creates a distance from your partner that puts up a protective shield and thus casts out love. Disengagement like that deals with fear at the cost of intimacy.

Enmeshment is just as deadly a strategy. It’s not really caring more. When in the name of love someone feels unable to imagine the future without someone else, two hearts have become one. As romantic as that sounds on the surface, it’s actually fear disguised as love.

To love someone perfectly means to stand alongside that one and walk together in a

closeness unlike any other. The dearest sympathy recognizes the boundaries of each individual. It holds hands, so to speak, rather than trying to live inside the other person’s skin. Empathy like that shrinks love instead of stretching it.

True love acknowledges the infinite mystery of the other person’s existence and celebrates it. It respects the distinction of one soul to another and looks with wonder for all

the surprises and discoveries that may yet be revealed in the other. It lives with perpetual gratitude that, no matter what else may come, love abides.

Whenever someone tries to control or contain another, even in the name of love, that mystery is violated by encroaching fear and love is threatened.

Perfect love lives in perfect freedom. Fear turns freedom into slavery. Slavery may result in a relationship of duty, but never love. Love allows the lover his or her own thoughts and feelings and beliefs — it even revels in them. This love in freedom looks like faithfulness. So what to do about a loving wife’s fear of losing her husband, or vice versa. Imagine the worst outcome possible and face it with faith. Then let it go. Even death cannot defeat love. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, after all.

There may be pain with love. There may be loss with love. But there needn’t be fear.

When all is said and done, we will not be undone. Faith in the God who raises the dead out of love can live free of fear and full of love.

Like many computer users, Terri Dates had recently become a Macintosh convert. She loved her new Macbook that she had just purchased a few months earlier. She had decided to buy a Mac, imagining its ease of use and speed booting up and connecting to the Internet. The idea of not having to worry about computer viruses also appealed to her.

“It’s so much faster,” Dates says. “My old PC was two or three years old, and it was slow. With this Mac, there’s no delay.”

unfortunately, her Macbook is now gone, the work of a burglar who ransacked her home.

The

The Crime: burglary

Date: Tuesday, Dec. 15

“I came home from work and found the door wide open and the door frame broken,” she says of the day of the burglary. “They got all my electronics, but they left they TV. It was too old, I guess.”

and 4:30 p.m. location: 10300 block of lake gardens

Time: between 8

The frame was smashed, and splintered wood covered the entrance to the home. Dates did not enter the home, fearing the burglar might still be there, and called police. Police arrived quickly, she says, praising their efforts.

“It’s nice to know we have such good police response,” Dates says. along with her Mac, the crook got away with a drill, software, a Dell laptop, a printer, iPods, jewelry, phones and more – well over $6,000 in property.

Despite the loss and frustration, she chooses to look on the bright side. The Christmas presents she had bought had been shipped to relatives, her dogs were not home to run out the open door, and no one was hurt during the break-in. The family has also added a security system to help prevent burglaries.

“I am glad I wasn’t at home when they kicked in the door,” Dates says. “I just lost things — everything can be replaced.”

Lt. Gloria Perez with the Dallas Police Northeast Patrol Division says police often are able to catch thieves by the initial response or covert work.

“a quick response can help catch a burglar or thief. We also have covert officers out in the field driving in unmarked vehicles,” she says. “a witness will call 911 and report it. Information is gathered from the witness to help us catch and file cases with suspect information. Covert officers can watch suspects without being noticed and can tell marked elements when to come in and make arrests.”

Perez says the police department’s “Operation Identification” program can also help theft victims in case of burglary or theft.

“[The program] encourages people to engrave or permanently mark their valuable property with their driver’s license or Texas ID number. This is done as a means of identifying and recovering stolen property.”

She also recommends homeowners to record manufacturer names and product serial numbers. —SEAN CHAFFIN

BUDGET: BAD AND GETTING WORSE

The numbers are quite depressing. The city is collecting sales tax revenue, thanks to the recession, at 2004-05 levels. It is spending money at 2009-10 levels, which is about onethird more than it spent in 2004-05. I realize I am regularly accused of being entirely too negative, but sometimes there is a reason.

Yet no one Downtown seems especially concerned, and that may be even more depressing. When is the last time we heard the mayor, the city manager or the silent majority on the council express any concern about this? Instead, we get platitudes from Mayor Park Cities: “If you’re not with me, you’re not for Dallas.” We get even more platitudes from the city staff: “This budget positions us well for the future.” And we don’t even get that from most of the members of the council, who have seemed remarkably untroubled during the past 18 months.

Well, now is the time to speak up, because this is a crisis. You can find the numbers on the city’s website with a couple of clicks — start on government, and then click on chief financial officer. All of the budgets

since 2002-03 are listed in the upper left-hand corner. We spent about $2.0 billion in the 2004-05 fiscal year; we’re budgeted to spend $2.7 billion in 2009-10. The sales tax accounts for about 22 percent of that, while another 43 percent comes from the property tax, and the rest comes from

and firefighters get laid off. This is when we consider mothballing libraries and rec centers. This is when we don’t find a way, through some paper shuffling, to re-hire the hundreds of other city employees who get laid off. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

fees and charges. One tiny bit of good news: The property tax revenue situation isn’t quite as bad, since the real estate market looks like it has only fallen to 2006 or 2007 levels (as measured by the Advocate Home Price Snapshot) and we’ve had rate increases since 2004-05 as well.

Still, that’s not much help. As bad as the current budget is, the next one will be worse. We made the easy cuts in 2009-10, as painful as they were — the furloughs for city employees, the reduction in street repairs, the library and rec center closings. There will be no easy cuts in the 2010-11 budget, only painful ones. Unless there is a dramatic surge in revenue over the next six months, this is when the cops

And, frankly, we have no one to blame but ourselves. We voted for these people — or we didn’t bother to vote at all. And I include myself in this, because I’m the one who is supposed to be paying attention. Yes, I have been writing about this since the crisis started, but I also assumed that someone Downtown had to have some inkling about what to do once they accepted that there was a crisis. That’s the main reason why I supported a property tax increase last fall; we’d paper over the 2009-10 deficit with smaller cuts and the increase, and then we’d be in a better position to address 2010-11.

My mistake was that I assumed someone would acknowledge the crisis. I have no idea why no one Downtown wants to admit that we’re on the edge of the cliff looking down, but they don’t. Maybe it’s hubris. Maybe it’s that they’re not as good at their jobs as we’re told they are. Or maybe they genuinely believe that tax money will appear like manna from heaven.

Whatever the reason, though, they’d better do something quick. I was here at the beginning of the century, when we went through this the last time. And no one wants to go through that again.
