The magazine in your hand contains only a portion of what we report

Even though we’re in the magazine publishing business here at Advocate Media, we spend only about half of our day working on our magazines.

What do we do with the rest of the time?

Well, these days there are all kinds of ways to deliver news and information to readers.

For example, you may not know that every day — generally three or four times a day, in fact — we update our advocatemag. com website with neighborhood news and information that happens after one month’s magazine is completed and before another month’s magazine can be delivered.

Restaurant openings, neighborhood business news, crime updates, events you can attend — you can find all of this information at advocatemag.com in our Daily Digest. Because of timing and relevance, much of the daily news information on our website never appears in our magazine, so if you can make time to read both, you’ll know a whole lot more about what’s happening around you.

Don’t have time to check out our website every day? Sign up for our weekly emailed news update, which recaps some of the top stories from the past week’s Daily Digest, along with additional information, photos and videos that don’t make it into the magazine. To sign up for that weekly publication, go to advocatemag.com/newsletters.

We do the same thing with restaurant news and deals, except that emailed digest goes out every other week; you can sign up for that one at advocatemag.com/newsletters, too.

Say you’re a big Facebook fan and like to scroll through news on that site — like the Advocate on Facebook and let us stream daily updates directly to you that way. Same

with Twitter: Sign up to follow our Twitter account, and you’ll always be up-to-date as we report on all kinds of interesting neighborhood happenings and events.

OK, now say you have spare time for reading at lunch or a kids’ sporting event or anywhere you happen to be, but say you left your Advocate magazine at home. We have an app with our current and many of our past issues: Go to the Android or Apple iOS store, search for “Dallas Advocate” and download our app for use on your tablet or smartphone.

Our app gives you an interactive way to read the magazine and also connect with advertisers and groups we’re writing about, since most web links in the magazine are clickable right from the application if you’re looking for a local electrician, lawn guy, veterinarian, Realtor or whatever, you can search for what you’re seeking, check out their website directly from the magazine app, and make your decision about spending money right then and there.

And say your hot water heater just broke and you need a plumber right away: Go to advocatemag.com/classifieds, and there you’ll find virtually all of the local people who advertise in our magazine (and some who don’t) online and available at the click of a button.

Finally, if you’re a neighborhood business, we can help build your website, set up and manage your social media accounts, and continue making sure that you stay in contact with your customers, both existing and prospective.

We’re always working on more and better ways to bring neighborhood businesses together with neighborhood residents, and as I mentioned earlier, we’re spending a lot of our time doing so.

I hope you’ll keep reading our magazine, visiting our website and app, and checking out our social media sites to keep up to date with what’s happening throughout our neighborhood.

Q&A: James Scott, Veggie Fair founder

In October 2010, even as Dallasites drooled over the meaty, cheesy texas Fried Frito Pie (taste-division winner of the State Fair’s big tex choice Awards that year), James Scott organized a culinary-based event that was free of meat and animal products. Scott rallied several local vegetarian and vegan vendors and saw some 500 visitors in and out of the Deep ellum warehouse in which he hosted that first veg fest. three years later his texas Veggie Fair has outgrown two venues, acquired participants from around the nation and made a strong case for the fun side of vegan and vegetarianism. More than 5,000 visitors came through the 2012 event, now held at reverchon Park, 3505 Maple in the turtle creek area. even one of Dallas’ most prolific celebs, erykah badu, has taken notice. A practicing vegan, badu will be the keynote speaker and entertainer at this year’s fair, Sunday, Oct. 20 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Why the interest in veganism?

Initially, about 10 years ago, I became a vegetarian for health purposes. But that led me to research some of the other reasons why people become vegetarian or vegan. Once I started learning about practices of the food industry, which involve a general inhumaneness toward animals and environmentally irresponsible procedures, I became vegan. So avoiding contribution to that industry — the factory farming — became my motivation.

That led to the blog [dallasvegan.com], which I started, and the feedback there let me know there was a community out there of people who felt the same way I did. That’s when I started thinking about the fair.

Unlike, say, Austin, Dallas doesn’t seem to have a ton of vegan options.

Is it difficult to be a vegan in Dallas?

8 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com Oct O ber 2013 Launch community | events | food

That is part of the reason I wanted to do this. I noticed many restaurants around that have vegan options or potentially vegan options on their menus. Often they aren’t marked that way, but they are there if you look for them. On my blog, I started encouraging a dialog about vegan items in restaurants. Some of the local restaurateurs noticed the commentary and the demand, and some even asked me to work with them on their menus.

What restaurants — ones we might not think about — have vegan menu choices?

One of the big ones that’s been on my radar for a while is Trinity Hall Irish Pub [at Mockingbird Station]. They always had a couple of menu items, but recently they put together a vegan menu. Hacienda on Henderson also has reached out through

the blog and has developed some vegan options.

How does incorporating organic, meatless and/or vegan options benefit restaurants?

There are plenty of vegans out there, but often their families and social groups are not. Sometimes when you have a vegetarian in the group, a restaurant can be ruled out based on what we call the “vegetarian veto.”

What’s that?

It means that a large group of diners might rule out a particular restaurant based on its lack of options for the pickiest of the group’s eaters. So a restaurant with zero vegan options might lose out on a whole family of diners because of the single vegetarian among them.

Did you create the Veggie Fair as an opposition to the State Fair and its deep-fried, bacon-centric offerings?

No — that’s not it. There was a nod to the Texas State Fair. Initially we called it the State Veggie Fair. But really what you will find at the veggie fair is that vegan and vegetarian food, while it can be healthy, can also be as sweet, fatty and fried, and creative and fun as your traditional state fair food. Our hope is to include everyone. Yes, we are here for vegans and those who are leaning toward that lifestyle, but we really want to get the non-vegetarians out here and let them see that this food can be fun, too. The speakers, the entertainment and the activities we put on for kids, too, will be a draw for everyone. And the beer. Trinity Hall is sponsoring our beer garden. So, no, I wouldn’t even call it an alternative, just another fun thing to do in October.

Speaking of entertainment, how did you score Erykah Badu?

Well, for one I’ve now got a good team of people working with me, like Stephanie Casey — she reached out to Erykah. And because Erykah believes in this, she accepted the chance to help educate and improve the lives of animals. We will have several vendors out talking about ways to do that.

75 years of Panther pride

Hillcrest High School will commemorate 75 years of graduates during the school’s anniversary celebration Oct. 4-5. The festivities kick off Friday with the Hillcrest pep rally, homecoming parade and homecoming football game. Saturday’s activities will include face painting, food trucks, and an assembly with appearances from Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dallas ISD Superintendent Mike Miles. It will be the first allinclusive alumni reunion in the history of the Preston Hollow high school.

Since February, hundreds of parents and alumni have worked to raise support for the celebration. Linda Cullum Tunnell and Christy Bednar, who both graduated from Hillcrest in 1962, are the event cochairs. Bednar says the PTA parents had been thinking about the anniversary for

some time and invited the alumni to get involved.

“There are people who are eager to help and be a part of it, so it feels like a warm school community that’s standing up and saying that they are proud that they went to Hillcrest,” Bednar says.

When planning the event, Tunnell and Bednar wanted it to serve a different purpose than the 50th anniversary celebration, which was a nighttime celebration held at Ola Podrida mall 25 years ago.

“We wanted it to be during the day, at the school, completely inclusive, and free,” Bednar says.

She says that the Hillcrest 75th anniversary is more of a celebration of the Hillcrest community.

“The motto is ‘Panther Pride,’ and that’s

what we want the alumni to celebrate, but we want to inject that sense of pride into the neighborhood, too,” Bednar says. She hopes that they can take the energy from the event and segue it into finally starting an official alumni association.

“Our long-term goal is to have a strong alumni association, with a foundation that is devoted to funneling private money to Hillcrest for student and teacher support,” Bednar says. “We know we want an educated work force, but we need more supportive adults than public schools have right now. What’s going to help the public schools in Dallas the most is the strong support and involvement of public school alumni. We can do more.” —Whitney Thompson Visit hhspanthers.com

Homegrown players ready to take the field

This year, W.T. White alumni Danny Garcia and Ramon Nuñez were signed to Dallas’ Major League Soccer team, FC Dallas. Although Garcia and Nuñez are both midfielders and homegrown players, they each took their own journey to get where they are today.

Garcia was raised in Dallas and recalls his best memories of attending W.T. White.

“At school, all the students would look out for each other,” Garcia says. “If we ever had a problem, there was always somebody we could go speak to.”

Garcia played on the high school’s soccer team his freshman year, and then played for the FC Dallas Academy during his remaining high school years until he graduated from W.T. White in 2012. At age 19, Garcia was signed to FC Dallas. He is eligible to make his official Major League debut in the 2014 season. Since being signed to FC Dallas, Garcia says his highlight was being able to debut with the team after being subbed into the game during an international friendly exhibition game against English team Stoke City FC.

Fellow W.T. White alum Ramon Nuñez was signed to FC Dallas this year in March. This is not the first time for the 27-year-old to play professionally for Dallas, however. Back in 2004, Nuñez signed for the Dallas Burn after playing for the Southern Methodist University Mustangs during his freshman year. Three years later, Nuñez left Dallas to play for his native Honduran team, and also had stints playing for Chivas USA and Leeds United, until he tore his ACL in 2012. The injury, which traditionally requires a long recovery, kept Nuñez off the playing field for months, until he was subbed on in several games this past summer. His most notable game was in August, when he scored a goal against Chivas that helped FC Dallas achieve its first official win after a two-month streak of ties and losses.

Nuñez says he is happy to have a chance to play again and be back in his hometown. He bought a house in Preston Hollow shortly after signing with the soccer league this year.

“This time around, the league is so much better,” Nuñez says. “The FC Dallas team and staff have grown so much over the years, and I am sure there are more good things to come.”

Trinity Hall Irish Pub in Mockingbird Station, which offers both vegan/vegetarian and gluten-free menus, is an example of a growing effort on the part of local restaurateurs to serve our neighborhood’s pickiest eaters without turning off the meat-and-potatoes (or, in Trinity’s case, bangers-and-mash) crowd. It initially had to do with the bottom line, Trinity owner Marius Donnelly says, noting that it started with the gluten-free movement. The associated level of ingredient awareness has motivated people to look more closely at what they consume. “As our staff as well as guests became more concerned with what they are eating, we noticed an increased demand for vegan menu items.” Vegan and gluten-free diners can better trust in an establishment that offers a specialized menu, he says. “A kitchen that doesn’t do vegan, for example, might use chicken stock for everything; one of the big changes we made involved switching to a flavorful vegetable-based stock.” It also is more efficient for the staff to prepare familiar items, as opposed to arranging off-menu dishes. Donnelly and his team, including chef Oscar Gutierrez, exude enthusiasm regarding their from-scratch Ireland-inspired fare, the vegan/vegetarian menu progression and the constant evolution of the overall menu to meet their discerning diners’ desires. From the hummus and veggie platter to the pearled couscous with oil-and-garlic pan-finished vegetables and the aesthetic vegan polenta and beans, the vegan dishes are hearty and healthy. Even non-vegans who simply want to eat healthier and lighter enjoy these meatless creations, says Donnelly, a native of Dublin, Ireland. The pub, also revered for its small-town atmosphere and ale selection, has partnered with Barnivore to showcase vegan beers. The brewing process sometimes involves the use of fish gills, egg whites or other animal products, Donnelly explains, so now vegans can guiltlessly consume craft beer along with the rest of the crowd. —Christina Hughes Babb

Three Wishes Chardonnay (about $3) California

Can a wine drinker survive on $3 wine? Probably, given my experiment with five $3 chardonnays from Dallas retailers. The wines weren’t spectacular, but they mostly delivered value — and what more can someone want from a $3 wine? The biggest problem was not quality, but that the wines were boring. By the fourth night, I was ready for something else.

• Two-buck Chuck ($2.99), the Trader Joe’s private label. This was the weirdest of the five, with lots of tropical fruit (banana even) and very little chardonnay character. It wasn’t bad in the sense that I had to pour it down the drain, but it wasn’t enjoyable, either.

• Three Wishes ($2.99), t he Whole Foods private label. I expected most of the wines to be burdened with badly done oak (chips, probably). In fact, three of them didn’t taste of oak at all, and the oak in the Three Wishes was quite well done, assuming you like that style of wine. I don’t, so it wasn’t my favorite.

• Winking Owl ($2.89) from Aldi. My favorite — a straightforward, 1990s-style jug chardonnay with apple and pear fruit and varietal character for those who remember Glen Ellen. I would buy it again.

• Oak Leaf ($2.97), the Walmart private label. This was sweet, probably a couple of percentage points over the line that separates sweet from dry. Again, not awful, but nothing I’d buy again.

• Cul-de-Sac ($2.96), a private label for Central Market. This was sort of sweet, in the way Kendall-Jackson was in the 1990s, but also tasted like chardonnay. —Jeff Siegel

Midtown/ n orth central expressway | c ommuter-friendly: m idtown Park

The Midtown Park development, 80 acres of vacant land just east of Central Expressway at Meadow, has been delayed because of the recession. Earlier this summer, however, real estate investor Commodore Partners bought about 12 acres of the site from Kroenke Holdings with plans for a transitoriented, mixed-use project.

Back story | Starting in 2005, investors bought almost nine blocks with more than 2,500 aging apartments at the site just north of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, the Dallas Morning News reported. After tearing down the apartments, the owners planned to market the property for an $800 million urban-style mixed-use development.

The city invested $10 million in public funds for new streets, sidewalks and landscaping at the site. The recession halted the project and left property owners $85 million in debt. Kroenke Holdings, which also owns Preston Hollow Village (see next page), bought the land in 2011.

the latest | This summer, Commodore Partners requested to rezone the site to allow new retail and multifamily housing. The plan for an “urban neighborhood” features a predominantly residential area convenient to retail and public transportation since there is a DART rail line to the east. If zoning is approved, the council still must sign off on the final development plan before construction begins.

i nwood/lovers | m aking way for t rader Joe’s: i nwood Village

Trader Joe’s will open in the Inwood Village shopping center in 2014.

Back story | The Inwood Village shopping center opened in 1949, and an El Chico was one of the original tenants in the space that will soon be Trader Joe’s. Over the years, El Chico became Casa Rosa and, most recently, a Cantina Laredo. Cantina Laredo and neighbor Turtletique closed earlier this year to make way for the new grocer.

the latest | Plans for the new Trader Joe’s became official on Aug. 14 when the city council approved a variance allowing Trader Joe’s to sell beer and wine within 300 feet of Henry W. Longfellow Middle School on Inwood just

south of Lovers. Trader Joe’s spokesperson Alison Mochizuki says the store will open sometime in 2014.

Jack Breard, United Commercial Realty president and Inwood Village broker, says construction on the space has begun. Although there is sufficient parking according to city code, Breard suggests that Trader Joe’s may be looking into additional parking in the area. The traditionally tight-lipped Trader Joe’s spokespeople have no comment about parking.

Also, an unnamed restaurant is coming to Inwood Village, but no lease has been signed yet, Breard says.

“If it works out, I think the neighborhood will be really excited about this restaurant.”

Developers expanded one of our neighborhood’s hottest shopping centers by building up.

Back story | The Plaza at Preston Center was built in 1950 and was home to Neiman Marcus’ first suburban location in Dallas. Recently, a building was demolished to make way for a new five-story, mixed-use development that opened earlier this year, along with a 450-space parking deck.

the latest | Mike Geisler, founding partner of Venture Commercial and broker of the

shopping center, says the building has filled up with tenants. It’s called the Cambridge Building because Cambridge Holdings Inc. leased the entire top floor and half of the third floor in May. The second floor houses University Park’s first public library. Morgan Stanley took about 14,300 square feet of office space on the fourth floor.

On the ground floor, clothing boutiques Aftershock London, Pockets Menswear, Calypso St. Barth and LUBLU Kira Plastinina have opened, along with Sprinkles Ice Cream. The new health food spot True Food Kitchen is slated to open this month.

LBJ Expr E ss updat E

The reconstruction of LBJ Freeway is approaching a milestone: The first phase, a three-mile stretch between Greenville and Preston, opens in December.

That means six new lanes, three in each direction, known as managed toll lanes. They’ll have a 50 mph minimum speed with rates varying from 15 to 95 cents during low- or high-traffic-volume periods.

After a six-month trial period, the toll rates could change, depending on supply and demand. More cars equal higher fees.

The $3.2 billion, 13-mile-long LBJ Express project broke ground in 2011, having been more than 20 years in the making. It’s funded through a public-private partnership between TxDOT and Trinity Infrastructure.

Built in 1969, the freeway was designed to carry 180,000 vehicles per day. But by 2009, it held 270,000. In 2020, it’s projected to reach more than 500,000 vehicles per day.

The project is scheduled for completion by 2016.

w alnut Hill/Central | Pr I me P ro P erty: Presto N h ollow V I llage

Forty-two acres of undeveloped land at the northwest corner of Walnut Hill and Central Expressway, the most visible piece of real estate in Dallas, will develop into upscale retail, office buildings and restaurants over the next several years.

Back story | The land had been barren since the teardown of the aging Willow Creek apartments about five years ago. A previously planned mixed-use development stalled during the recession. In November 2010, Missouri-based Kroenke Holdings bought the site, and partner Provident Realty finally moved forward with the plans.

the latest | Construction has begun on the 14,000-square-foot anchor tenant, Trader

Joe’s, along with 46,000 square feet of office space and more than 60,000 square feet of restaurants.

Leon Backes of Provident Realty says he has worked with neighbors for years to meet their requirements for the mixed-use development.

Resident Shannon Summers says she’s concerned about safety and hopes that a plan is put in place to prevent cars from cutting through the residential areas.

“While one of the things I love about Preston Hollow is the convenience to shopping, I fear that Preston Hollow Village will bring increased crime and traffic,” she said, in an email.

The second phase of the project will begin in 2014 with the construction of three sevenstory residential towers.

Forest/inwood | New restaura N ts: Forest a N d I N wood

The out lot of the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center will soon be home to three new restaurants, including Rusty Taco , B.B. Bop Seoul Kitchen, and Einstein Bros. Bagels.

Back story | In 2011, Lowe’s applied for a zoning change to build a Murphy Express gas station and convenience store at the site, but the city denied the request following neighborhood opposition over the sale of alcohol so close to Jesuit Preparatory and St. Rita Catholic schools.

the latest | The city council unanimously approved plans to build the new restaurants without a drive-thru after a parking study of the area. Hermansen Land Development, the real east developer behind the project, needed a zoning change to identify off-street parking separate from Lowe’s.

Construction for Rusty Taco and Einstein Bros. Bagels begins this fall and will finish in early 2014. The “green” building features highefficiency lighting, native drought-tolerant plant materials, reclaimed construction materials and recycled waste management.

Uncle GeorGe’s clocks

In the basement of his farmhouse, I learned to treasure time

I can’t think of my great-uncle George Williams without thinking about time. More specifically, I think of clocks.

Uncle George was in the water business back in northeastern Pennsylvania, but what fascinated me was his collection of old timepieces. The basement of his farmhouse in Honesdale, Penn., was a wonderland for me as a boy, with its old pump organ and several dozen wall clocks and mantel clocks, every one of which chimed the hours. Uncle George considered the synchronization of his clocks to be of utmost importance, so every 15 minutes the basement was a cacophony of dings and dongs — a veritable choir of ancient timepieces.

Uncle George’s basement was a magical place for me. Upon visiting the farm, it was the first place I went, and once there, I would wait impatiently for the hour to strike. Noontime, of course, was the best time to hear the basement’s symphony of time.

What made the place so special was not the mere measurement of time, the fragile works of the clocks, or their often ornate designs. The clocks were more than that. Over the years since, I have come to see that they represented not just the progress of time, but the steady measurement of our lives. To this day, I love to sit quietly in our house and listen to the ticking of our clock in the hallway and its solo version of the chimes that mark the time of our lives.

I suppose the lesson of the old clocks was that time is a precious thing, worth measuring, celebrating and valuing. In our culture, we have too often regarded time as an enemy rather than a friend — something to be worked against, saved and shortcutted. We try our best to manage time, control time, and cram as much as we can into each precious minute. Our

relationship to time is often adversarial, but time still marches on, whether we like it or not.

We would do better to regard time as marking the precious gift of life — something to be savored, not just measured. The consciousness of time should lead us to value each passing day as a unique and unrepeatable gift. This should lead us not to panic at the thought of time’s passage but to be thankful for each day’s op-

To this day, I love to sit quietly in our house and listen to the ticking of our clock in the hallway and its solo version of the chimes that mark the time of our lives.

portunities and simple beauties. I’d like to be more like Uncle George’s clocks, calmly ticking the seconds and celebrating the hours, one day at a time.

The Bible reminds us that we are to “number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” I think that means that we are to use time wisely — not squandering it or wasting it or chasing after it, but celebrating the flow of life’s passage. Wise use of our time includes both work and play, productivity and rest, tasks and relationships — everything we need to be fully and completely human.

Uncle George died many years ago, and his clocks have been divided up among his great-grandchildren, I suppose. But I know that somewhere they are still ticking away the seconds, still celebrating each passing hour. They remind us that time is not the enemy, but a most precious gift — a gift that can even make us wise.

Crime at a funeral .

Unfortunately, yes.

The Victim: Bowen Florsheim

Education

The Crime: Burglary of a motor vehicle

Date: Thursday, Aug. 1

Time: Between 10 a.m. and noon

Location: 7400 West Northwest Highway

Bowen Florsheim was attending a funeral for a fellow Mason who had recently passed away. It was a somber occasion, and several Masons attended to honor their comrade. Florsheim had been charged with bringing Mason some regalia for the occasion and had left his car unlocked so others could help unload.

As the funeral got underway, Florsheim’s car unfortunately was still unlocked. But who would be despicable enough to take advantage of a funeral to commit a crime?

Sadly, somber occasions like this don’t always deter criminals. Someone entered his car and made off with a GPS, a pistol and nine bucks.

While Florsheim was a bit annoyed, he wasn’t surprised.

“It’s easy taking when you think about it. There are a lot of cars around and no one watching them,” he says. “If you’re going to steal, are you really going to care where you do it? It takes a low-life to do this at a funeral, but if you’re a thief, you’re a low-life anyway.”

Dallas Police Lt. Richard Dwyer of the North Central Patrol Division says this does happen occasionally, and citizens should always be vigilant about protecting their property — no matter where they are.

“When a person attends a funeral or other gravesite service, they are usually preoccupied with their personal thoughts and not aware of cars coming or going. In addition, they may have not been able to park their car nearby,” he says. “Remember ‘Lock, Take, Hide.’ ”
