Wheels of misfortune

Are a few fender benders a sign of a jinxed Jetta?

I’m not a person who believes much in luck. Yes, oddball stuff happens that’s hard to explain, and some people just seem to live under a lucky star, if you know what I mean.

But we generally make our own luck, I’ve told my sons, so what happens to us likely isn’t happenstance most of the time.

But that’s talking about luck in life. What about luck in terms of a car? Is it possible to have an unlucky car?

My wife insists my current car is unlucky, and I’m starting to wonder.

My black VW Jetta is a monster at the pump, with its clean diesel engine delivering more than 30 mpg in city driving and topping 45 mpg on the highway.

It rides pretty well for a small car, and its self-identified “leatherette” (aka vinyl) seats repel whatever hits them, so the interior remains showroom-clean, particularly since I force my wife to ditch her ubiquitous soda before entering.

The Jetta also has plenty of trunk room, so if I summoned the energy to tackle some big project, it wouldn’t be the car’s fault when I didn’t finish the job.

So when I wonder about the car’s “luck” factor, I’m talking about its magnetic attraction to the front bumpers of other cars.

Shortly after I bought the car four years ago, while preparing to turn right at a light, I found myself being assisted by the pickup truck behind me. No personal injuries, luckily, but my rear bumper took a beating.

That repair lasted about six months, until I was rear-ended again at another stoplight, also while in the right turn lane.

The car repair people patched the plastic so it once again looked new. And again, luckily, there were no injuries, except for my pride: My wife began suggesting that somehow my driving was responsible for the trouble. I figured she was just circling back on the soda issue.

But still, what about the car and its luck, or lack thereof? Two bumper whacks, along with myriad paint nicks from the doors of negligent neighboring parkers, made me wonder, out loud, whether I should be looking for an alternative.

Before I could do anything, though, my wife and I were returning from San Antonio along a particularly scary two-lane stretch of I-35 north of Waco, where it’s difficult to keep much distance between other cars because of incessant speeding and tailgating.

Sure enough, a few cars ahead I saw an instantaneous collection of rear stop lights amid a cloud of burning rubber as two lanes jammed with vehicles braked suddenly. I pounded the Jetta’s brakes and steered first right and then left in my lane to avoid the car in front of mine.

We came to a stop without incident, followed quickly by a “pow” as the BMW behind us came to a stop.

Once again, my rear bumper was smacked, and this time the body shop won’t be able to repair it.

So is the car unlucky? Or is the car neutral and the bumper lucky, considering I didn’t wind up with actionable whiplash in any of the three accidents?

I guess we’ll find out, since that bumper is headed to the great plastic recycling bin in the sky.

Maybe the Jetta is lucky — it has taken its licks even as everyone involved has walked away without a scratch.

At the end of the day, isn’t that the luckiest thing of all?

Q&A: Ellen Porter

When Ellen Porter talks about adoption she jumps up in her seat and grabs at the edges of its fabric. To porter, the heroism of women who give their children up for adoption leaves her in awe each day. Now a mom of four, two of them adopted, porter started her own organization, Bravelove, to educate the public about the courage it takes to give one’s child a better life.

What prompted you to start BraveLove?

Frank Garrott, president of the Gladney Center for Adoption, and president of the Dallas Pregnancy Resource Center, Mary Jayne Fogerty, and I got together to talk about the gap in women who [choose] adoption. Two percent of struggling pregnant women give their children up for adoption. As an adoptive mother I have two adopted children and two of my own. I clearly have a heart for women who give their children up for adoption. I started BraveLove to change the perception about those women and adoption.

8 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com April 2013 Launch community | events | food
Danny Fulgencio

What do you think the perception is?

There is a lot of shame surrounding unwed pregnancy and unwed mothers. We are trying to change the way people think about that. Yes, she got pregnant, but now this birthmother and birthfather can choose a way that’s noble and brave. There are a lot of people that think it’s weak and immoral to give one’s child up for adoption. There are people that don’t think the adoptive mother is brave. What do you say to them?

Women who choose to place for adoption, they are not women that don’t love their children. They love their children so much and they can’t provide for them. Whether they are single mothers or 16 years old and not ready and equipped. Birthmothers have 100 percent involvement in the decision making process on who gets to rear and raise their children. Birthmothers look through profiles and can pick and choose people who will raise their children. That is an empowering fact for these young mothers who don’t feel equipped. I will say this: adoption is not the right choice for every woman in an unplanned pregnancy, but for those women who don’t feel equipped, adoption can be.

What made you decide to adopt?

Reid [husband] and I lived in San Antonio while in he was in law school. We went to a Steven Curtis Chapman concert and he talked about his three adopted kids. He gave a presentation on adoption and we immediately knew we were called to this. Fast-forward three years and we are trying to have children, but it wasn’t coming along too easily. We now have five-yearold Caleb from Guatemala, our biological five-year-old son Bennett, our biological two-year-old son Silas and two-year-old daughter Micah from China.

How long after adopting did you start BraveLove?

Right in the middle of it. In Summer 2011

I was meeting with Frank and Mary Jayne about how only 2 percent of women choose to place and what to do about it. Micah came home Sept. 6 from China and the BraveLove kick-off party was Sept. 26.

What does your organization, BraveLove, aim to do?

Our vision is that adoption will become a common path for women who experience unplanned pregnancies. We seek to be a clearinghouse for adoption information, resources and stories.

Do you have goals or deadlines you want to meet?

We have a strategic plan. This year we are going to do a “birthmother’s day” celebration. Oftentimes Mother’s Day can be a hard day for birthmothers. You can go on our website and purchase a gift basket to send to a birthmother you know, or donate it to us and we’ll send it to a birthmother. We are also going to put out informational brochures in women’s clinics and pregnancy resource centers. We seek to commission research about who birthmothers are, where they are from and why they choose to place. What point do you really want to get across?

Everybody is an influence over the perception of adoption. Everybody plays a roll in the birthmothers’ choice to place for adoption. We need to realize our perceptions affect the decisions others make. We seek for BraveLove to touch everybody in its sphere of influence — grandparents, teachers, pastors, friends and family. This is not just a movement for birthmothers, it’s for everybody.

There are some that would ask you why women should give their children up for adoption instead of trying to find a way to raise them themselves.

This is definitely something we’ve talked about a whole bunch. BraveLove is not about separating babies from their mothers. Its about women who can’t do it and don’t have the support. We want to let them know it’s brave to adopt. We just want other people to realize adoption can also be a loving choice for your child. When I get letters from birthmothers and I read them, it rips my heart out, but then I think about their courage and I applaud them.

The h ockaday School

is working on its largest campaign in the school’s 100-year history by seeking to raise $100 million for its new Centennial Center, recruitment of faculty and a new faculty-in-residence program. Hockaday will renovate its Science Facility and Arts Facility, while creating a space between the two buildings where the arts and sciences can be studied in an interdisciplinary manner, says Melissa Allan, director of communications. The building will be known as the Centennial Center, where a refurbished auditorium and state-of-theart classrooms will bring the school into the 21st century, Allan says. You can read about the school’s history and participate in its campaign through its Centennial microsite that launches this month. Additional renovations include a new third floor to the science building with redesigned classrooms and a planetarium. Residence facilities will be upgraded to include housing for the new faculty-in-residence program in which teachers and staff will live on campus with their families. “This is a new concept for us,” Allan says. “Some of the stronger residence programs in the country do this, and it bolsters and strengthens the program. It will be more like a family unit.” Part of the renovation of the housing began late last month. Hockaday will also use a portion of the money to recruit more faculty and to provide additional financial aid to girls looking to attend the school — of the school’s 1,084 students, 18 percent receive financial aid. Allan says the school underwent years’ worth of planning for the center and its campaign, which has already raised more than $55 million; there’s no deadline as to how long the project will take, but construction will begin when school lets out for the summer.

Shack attack

Ten-year-old English Bulldog Shackleford stands out among other dogs. His person, Jennifer Bryarly, says he sleeps about 20 hours a day, which isn’t the reason her family thinks he is more like a cat than a dog – it’s that he lives like he’s got nine lives. Once “Shack” walked into the deep end of a pool and “sank to the bottom like a cinderblock.” On another occasion he ate a 2-pound bag of Christmas candies, including the foil wrappers. Jennifer says his stomach has been opened up three times for swallowing two pacifiers and a corncob. The Bryarly family paid for the first surgery, but then wised up and got pet insurance that covered more than $10,000 in vet bills. Shack isn’t much trouble these days, and still likes to get cozy with his other person, Henry

Jennifer has helped her family run the place since high school, and after deciding an office job wasn’t for her, she “settled” on serving up some delicious low fat sandwiches and scrumptious casseroles like the chicken spaghetti, potato ham, king ranch chicken and more. Moreno says most people order the chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches, which are served atop your choice of bread, and come with chips or carrots and a miniature muffin. A lot of Jennifer’s patrons drop by for dips, spreads and party trays for sporting events, which isn’t a bad idea as Major League baseball has begun.

Alternative blanc

Dry Creek Dry Chenin Blanc ($10)

I recently found a newspaper article about wine from 1977, which noted that wine was so confusing that most people just gave up trying to figure it out and always drank the same thing. Which helps explain the American fascination with chardonnay, which has been the most popular white wine for as long as I have been writing about it.

This is not a knock on chardonnay; it accounts for some of the world’s best wine, and I drink a lot of it myself. But it’s not the only white wine that’s versatile, goes well with food, and is widely available. The next time you want to drink the same old thing, consider these alternatives:

• Dry Creek Dry Chenin Blanc ($10): If chenin blanc is known in the U.S., it’s as an indifferently made sweet wine. The Dry Creek, on the other hand, is well made and not sweet. Look for lots of white fruit aromas, a little lemon peel fruit, and a sort of slate-like, fruit-pit finish.

• Château Magence Blanc ($9): This French white blend includes semillon, a grape used in Bordeaux to blend in white wines but little used in the U.S. This wine is crisp and lemony, with an interesting, almost salty flavor in the back.

• Yalumba Riesling ($10): Australia hasn’t always been known for massive, manly red wines. It was once famous for riesling, and the Yalumba shows why. Look for pleasant petrol aromas, some lime zest, not much sweetness, and an almost spicy finish.

Ask the wine guy

I found an old bottle of wine in the house. How can I tell how much it’s worth?

The easy answer is that it’s probably not worth anything. Being old doesn’t make a wine valuable; rather, it needs to be a high-end wine that benefits from aging, and those are rare. Also, it should have been stored properly, away from from heat and light. If it meets those conditions, you can check on a site like wine-searcher.com.

Lentil soup

Lentils are the easiest dried beans to use – they usually cook in 30 minutes or less and don’t require soaking before use. You can use any lentil here, but the French du puy lentils are the best and worth the extra cost. Add some Tabasco, and this will pair with the chenin blanc or riesling.

Grocery List

1 cup lentils

6 cups stock or water

1 onion, diced

2 carrots, peeled and diced

1 stalk celery, diced salt and pepper to taste

Directions

1. Put everything in a soup pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until the lentils are tender, 20 to 30 minutes.

A couple’s new home provides a canvas for creative design

Todd and Dana Kale didn’t move far after realizing their four-person family had outgrown their 2,300-square-foot cottage-style home on the 3300 block of Wentwood in Preston Hollow. The couple decided to move one block to a French-inspired home on the 3300 block of Villanova. It took about a year and a half for custom homebuilder John Young to build the 5,300-square-foot home. Todd says he knew from the beginning it would be his wife’s home, not his, in terms of design.

This is not your traditional TV room. With an antiqued mirror, doule doors that lead to the pool, and a blue velvet sofa paired with toile chairs and pillows, it’s exactly what the woman of the house wants: a chic mix and match.

Story by Monica S. Nagy | Photos by Jeanine Michna Bales
April 2013 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com 23

“Look, I knew when she started doing all the design work that whatever happened, our home would be great,” he says. Dana, a selfdescribed home-decorating magazine “freak,” worked with a decorator to pick out colors and furniture for their antiquechic home.

Butter yellow paint covers the walls downstairs and reflects off hardwood floors and 24-inch limestone tiles. The front room is decorated with an antiqued mirror, cream and blue needlepoint rug, glass-top coffee table, couch, painted hutch, and two Ethan Allen chairs Dana inherited from her mother and then had whitewashed and reupholstered in a cream-colored fabric.

“I love painted furniture — old, crusty antiques and the chipping effect,” Dana says. Her front room also features a lot of something that her decorator told her is actually a faux pas: black and white photos of her children. “We had a decorator who said people don’t put pictures of their kids in the formal living room, but I love them. I don’t care,” she says with a laugh. Besides, the front room is where her children, Caroline (16) and Nick (13), lounge and read books when they’re taking breaks from track and hockey/baseball practices, respectively.

Window treatments are something you won’t find in most rooms of their home. Though Todd says he would like the house a little darker, Dana loves to let the light in, which the three floor-to-ceiling windows in her front office certainly do. Double doors lead into her workspace, where a real zebra rug (her pro-animal-rights daugh-

ter does not approve) covers the floor, the windows have eyebrow arches, and a solo bullseye window glimmers right next to her bookshelf.

The desk is covered with Kale Naturals, a grooming line Dana says she was inspired to create for males who have surpassed the “cartoon body wash” phase. The abundance of light flowing through her office windows is important for this entrepreneur, whose first retail customer was Ken’s Man’s Shop in PrestonRoyal. Kale now also sells at Neiman Marcus.

At the edge of her desk sit two sturdy chairs she had custom designed for her office, and they too are upholstered in cream fabric. Dana’s favorite room in the house is her dining room, which features a family-style table with eight upholstered chairs in a green/gray/blue velvet floral fabric.

“I couldn’t visualize what she was trying to do with the dining room chairs, and I thought they’d be horrible,” Todd says. “But she told me to trust her, and it turned out great.” Against one wall sits a massive Hungarian buffet featuring cherub heads. Dana had it painted light gray and placed a gold oval mirror from the Round Top Antiques Fair on top of it. On the other end of the room hang three large framed philodendrons and water lilies that the couple receives many compliments on.

A small patio off to the side of the dining room, showcasing rose vines, can be entered through double doors that let in more light. The idea behind the patio was for a bartender to serve drinks when the pair entertains guests, but that has yet to happen.

Instead Todd entertains and feeds his family in one of the rooms in the house into which he had significant input — the kitchen. Todd specifically wanted a Thermador stove equipped with six gas burners and a griddle. The kitchen also features a large multiuse island with several drawers, four wicker stools and a built-in microwave low enough for children, but discreet enough to hide spaghetti splatter. Three medieval-looking custom pendant lights

hang above the island and were modeled after the chandelier on the other side of the kitchen.

What’s under that chandelier is impressive: a large handmade banquette and breakfast table where the family dines each morning. Above the banquette is a large antiqued mirror — another obsession of Dana’s, she says.

Beside the kitchen is the bar, which emulates the kitchen’s cabinets in its clean white colors. A wine bar is built in to the lower cabinets; the upper ones hold liquors. Take a few steps and you’re in the family room, which features a view of the pool, another oval antiqued mirror and a brilliant floral painting unobstructed by a frame. A velvet gray and blue couch with green and gold velvet throw pillows sits behind a coffee table painted green to match — Dana likes a lot of green and blue. The rug has a few other colors in it, but the pops of red bring together the painting, couch and table. There’s another velvet couch that’s special to the Kales: the playroom upstairs holds a massive maroon velvet couch the couple bought when they were first married. It’s one of the pieces Dana can’t part with because of the memories (or maybe because her son and his friends can flop on it with their burgers and not make her wince).

The Middle Eastern pillows on the couch add something special to the otherwise simple playroom. Dana found the brilliantly colored pillowcases for $25

apiece, though she’s seen them go for $300 elsewhere. Across the hall is her son’s room with dark powder-blue walls and Fatheads of famous football players. The rest of the walls are decorated with hockey paraphernalia, and his bed is

covered with a deep brown throw.

Their daughter’s room is Todd’s favorite room of the house and what he calls a miniature apartment. The walls are the same powdery blue, yet covered with a picture board, photos of Audrey Hepburn, and “Spotty Dog” paintings, based on a purple-and-blue spotted Dalmatian stuffed animal she got when she was 5 and still keeps on the middle of her bed. Large windows overlook the front of the home, and colorful umbrellas hang from her ceiling. Off to the side, she has her own study nook, which almost didn’t come about, Todd says. The spot where her desk now sits was supposed to be taken up by pipe chases, but Young worked around it.

The couple’s room is another favorite of Todd’s, yet it is very minimal.

Two light purple velvet chairs and a stool sit on one end of the room’s newly laid hardwood floors, and their bed with its custom cream headboard sits at the other.

Happily for Todd, there are pull curtains on the windows and a dark wooden armoire that Dana hasn’t gotten around to painting. “She makes fun of me because I grew up with everything in dark wood,” he says. “When we got married I thought it would be a good idea to combine our light and dark furniture. Like most men, I never put any thought into what interior design can do.” The powder-purplepainted bathroom is literally an area where the couple won’t meet. The sinks and mirrors are on separate sides of the bathroom, and they have their own walk-in closets. “He won’t share a closet with me — he thinks I’m messy,” she laughs.

Though at first they didn’t have the same vision, Todd is happy with the results of their home: an organized, minimalistic and open space in which they can share their lives (except in the bathroom) until their kids leave for college. When they do, that’s another story — perhaps one that will take place in Santa Monica.

The lowdown on what’s up with neighborhood businesses

Katy Trail Ice House, 1 – neighbors, 0 Mid-March the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission rejected Park Towers homeowners association’s request for a hearing to discuss a noise abatement agreement with Katy Trail Ice House. The neighbors have complained about the noise the bar emits since it first opened, and have had enough. Unfortunately the TABC doesn’t seem to find the ice house in the wrong, citing they only had three police calls in the past two years, which is not hearing worthy according to the TABC.

Go gaga over YaYa

YaYa Foot Spa, a traditional Chinese reflexology shop, expanded to open its third location at Lovers Lane recently. Started by Dallas resident Nicole Isenberg, who moved to Dallas from Mainland China, Isenberg hired people who hail from the same place to perform these old rituals. Procedures involve soaking feet in an herbal tea, followed by pressure point treatment and energy restoration to make the nerve endings feel good. “All points of the body are connected to the feet as well as the brain. It’s a very relaxing treatment,” says husband Ralph Isenberg. The new reflexology shop has seven seats, and a private area for three and four chairs up front where you are given hot chrysanthemum tea upon arrival.

Sub-Zero and Wolf to open 20,000-square-foot showroom

Sub-Zero and Wolf, a kitchen design resource center, will open in the Design District early April. You can take cooking classes by Chef Garth Blackburn, receive one-on-one product consultations, cooking demonstrations and more. Sub-Zero, Inc., is one of the leading manufactures of American-made refrigeration, freezers and wine storage products.

A 42-year-long celebration

Celebration Restaurant made the 42-year mark last month, all thanks to its great food and service, says chief operating officer Ed Lowe. Lowe opened the restaurant in 1971 with the financial backing of his parents, and as it became more successful, they expanded to include a market and catering business. Now Lowe, Mr. old hippie, is “constantly aggressively looking for ways to improve,” though they seem to be doing pretty well as is. “We have a lot of wonderful people, we call them ‘partners’ not

‘employees,’” says Lowe. With more than 100 partners, he’s proud to say 50 percent of them have been there more than five years. It’s important for Lowe to have loyal employees because that’s what makes his business successful, he says. He even goes so far as to say that employees come first and then the customers, which isn’t an odd business model when you think about it. Keep the employees happy and they’ll want to keep everyone else happy in return, he says. “Our philosophy has always been when you come in you’ll get the same or better quality than you got before. If you [a business] are trying to stay the same you’re probably going to get worse,” he says.

New tenants open at The Plaza at Preston Center

The Plaza at Preston Center’s construction is moving along as owners leased a spot to women’s clothing store Aftershock London, and development is nearly done. Aftershock’s London’s store will open its first location in the United States at the center sometime mid-April. The store will feature 1,300 square feet for shopping. New stores are signing leases while some are going to relocate in the next few months, says Caroline Terry with Elle Public Relations. Calypso St. Barth and Calypso Home are currently separate, but they’ll move and combine to one larger space next door to Lucky Dog Barkery. True Food Kitchen is tentatively going to open summer 2013, and Lu Blue and Matthew Trent are expected to open sometime this month in the same building as the new University Park Library. Good thing the parking deck with more than 400 spots is already complete.

The ‘T hird age’

Perhaps retirement marks a beginning, not an end

Earlier this year I made the “big announcement” to my congregation. After 18 years of ministry here, I will become what the Presbyterian Church (USA) calls “honorably retired.” I gave lots of notice, since I will not be officially retired until the end of June 2014.

Some of you readers will have some idea what such a decision feels like. On the one hand, I will miss the busyness, the weekly deadlines, the meetings and the full schedule. On the other hand, I will not miss the busyness, the weekly deadlines, the meetings and the full schedule. I look forward to retirement as an opportunity to do the many things I love — writing, traveling, speaking here and there, and spending more time with my two daughters and four grandsons who live in Pennsylvania. We plan to stay in Dallas — a city we have come to love and now call home.

In preparation for this, I participated in a seminar in California about 18 months ago, titled “Ending Well — Finishing Strong.” One of the first things we did was make a list of all the things we look forward to doing in retirement. After we made our lists (like “work out every morning”) the leader asked, “So why aren’t you doing those things now?”

Good question.

I also learned that some are now calling retirement “the third age,” which I found interesting. When Social Security began, the average life expectancy was 67 years old. This meant that Social Security was designed to fill in the short time you had left. No wonder we are

now facing the challenge of affording it! With increased life expectancies today, it is entirely possible that we could spend a third of our life after we “retire.” The first age is our years of growing up and being educated. The second age is our working, career years. The third age, then, can possibly be another third of your life, and you have to figure out what to do with it. Thus, the theme of the third

age is, once again, vocation — that is calling. What is my calling now?

I find this rather fascinating to think about. What is God calling me to do in this next stage of my life? How will I know? All I know is that, in every other time of life, such discernment has come through prayer, study, thought and the good counsel of friends. But I particularly like author Fred Buechner’s observation that our calling is found “where your deep delight meets the world’s need.”

That’s my hope as I prepare for my third age — to take one thing that causes me deep delight, and link it to a great and worthy need. I’ll keep you posted.

Dr. Kenneth Cooper, author of the best-selling book “Aerobics” and founder and president of the Dallas Aerobics Center, received the Oak Cliff Lions Club’s Bill Melton Humanitarian Award March 27.

Dr. Reuben Elovtiz joined the Cooper Clinic Platinum team to provide members with around-the clock access for their preventive and primary care needs.

Education

After more than two decades of serving as Headmaster at St. Marks, Arnie Holtberg announced that he’ll retire at the end of the 2013-2014 academic year. Holtberg worked on the $100 million plus Centennial Challenge fundraising campaign, which is almost completed, and two other successful campaigns during his tenure.

Politics

Two candidates are competing for the District 11 city council seat of Linda Koop now that her term is expired. Former District 11 Dallas Park Board Member Lee Kleinman resigned December 2012 specifically to run for Linda Koop’s position. Kleinman is chief operating officer and principal at Bridge Metrics, where employees provide marketing tools and services for the technology channel. Ori Raphael, vice president of business development for FreshLoc, a wireless temperature monitoring company, is a former aid to U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions.

District 13 councilwoman Ann Margolin of Preston Hollow and north Dallas has three candidates looking to take her place after she announced she wasn’t running again due to personal reasons. Leland Burk, 25-year chairman and president of Burk Interests and founding director and principal shareholder of First Independent National Bank, has Margolin’s endorsement. Jennifer Staubach Gates, Catholic Foundation trustee and registered nurse, spends time volunteering in the community and is on the leadership team of the St. Rita Community capital campaign. Richard P. Sheridan is also stepping up for the seat. A retired advocate for city improvements, Sheridan also ran for council in 2005, 2011 and mayor in 2007 as a write-in. Teenager Jacob King of Bishop Lynch High School is also in the race. The 18-year-old senior remains optimistic.

The crime Took some T ime.

Like many area homes, Randall Isenberg’s Preston Hollow East house was hit by some hailstorms a couple of months ago. Roofing companies could be found throughout the Metroplex re-shingling roofs.

“We thought we’d wait until the rush was over,” Isenberg says.

In February, a roofing company unloaded eight skids of shingles and some other equipment in front of his house. Everything was set for the company’s men to return the next day and finish the job. Isenberg asked the man unloading everything if he was sure he wanted to leave it in front of his house.

Some foul weather the next couple of days pushed the job back a bit, and Isenberg came out one morning to find everything gone. He says it would have taken someone with a truck and trailer at least to steal all the supplies — not to mention some considerable time to load everything up.

Date: Thursday, Feb. 21

Time: Between 9:30 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Location: 6800 block of Prestonshire

“It was a ton of stuff,” he says. “It’s hard to imagine with cameras, a security system and dogs that no one caught it.”

Dallas Police Major Bill Humphrey of the North Central Patrol Division says that thieves are always looking for something of value and that items of this much value should never be left outdoors where they might attract a thief. The recent hailstorms caused a massive increase in roofing repairs throughout the city, resulting in a greater number of construction workers, supplies, and equipment in the area within the last six weeks. Leaving the supplies outdoors provides too much of an opportunity for thieves.
