DEAL OF THE DAY

The price for the only Philip Johnson house in Dallas, which has been on the market since 2014, dropped by $8 million. Built in 1963, the 11,000-square-foot architecturally significant house on Strait Lane has six bedrooms, a media room and a tennis court on six acres. First listed at $27.5 million five years ago, it’s now $19.5 million.

But, you have to demand things from people and you have to be grateful for how things are done.”

n Dirk Nowitzki lifted his shirt and showed a small paunch at his annual celebrity charity tennis classic at SMU. He admitted going light on the workouts and heavy on pizza and ice cream when he was with his family in Europe over the summer. Here’s what a New York Post pundit says about the 6-foot-10, 216-pound star: “The guess here is Ty Montgomery probably wasn’t among the top running backs taken in your fantasy draft… But if there’s a secret weapon to the Jets season, an overlooked component that could contribute mightily, it could be Montgomery.”

OUT-OF-THE-BOX COLORS

Jennifer Neily’s hand-painted tiles, coasters, magnets and boxes are uniquely fashioned: No one “has everything” until they have one of these. And her items turn heads in any home’s design scheme. Various sizes are available from Jennifer’s company, Uniquely Neily.

PERFECT PAIR

Suzanne Morgan’s versatile scarves and textiles are made of silk, fine micron wools and nuno felting. Using a type of laminated felting, Suzanne creates one-of-a-kind patterns.

Sally Wilkins’ handdyed silk scarves also pair well with Eva Smith’s Buttonista Designs. These handcrafted, multi-purpose buttons’ super power is that they’re magnetic — no more pesky pin holes in scarves. The ornamented Buttonistas are fashioned from glaze, paint, leather, stones and jewels. They’re a perfect accent for scarves, purses and hats.

Mongrel Koi Designs artist Henry Aschner is regarded for his sculptures in polymer clay and mixed media. Aschner favors the Millefiori technique — meaning “thousand flowers” in Italian. Millefiori also is known as caning, a glassworks technique of arranging colored glass rods into an image, which is then heated and stretched, then sliced for a repeatable pattern. Henry finds inspiration in animals, colors and patterns in nature.

Donna Wilhelm’s mission is to live each day with philanthropic intent

14 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com november 2019
Interview by LISA KRESL | Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO

Donna Wilhelm opens the door to her LEED Gold home. Her front patio features a soothing waterfall, and the inside boasts museumquality art mixed with toys for her 4-year-old granddaughter, who lives next door. Wilhelm, the founder and initiating donor of KERA’s Art & Seek, will be honored as “outstanding philanthropist” Nov. 8 at Dallas’ National Philanthropy Day lunch. Nominated by the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth, Wilhelm has contributed more than $10 million to arts, culture and education organizations. She is a 2016 SMU Meadows at the Meyerson honoree. Wilhelm holds a degree in studio and art history from City University of New York. She studied jewelry design at the Parsons School of Design. Her memoir, “A Life of My Own,” publishes this month.

What inspired you to be so philanthropic?

I was married for 34 years and my life was dedicated to my husband’s career. We moved nine times around different countries and within the U.S. When I left the marriage, I finally had resources of my own, and I had the freedom to do whatever. I went through an intense process of finding myself and found that my personal enrichment, retreat and fulfillment has come from creative work — visual arts, jewelry arts, writing the book. The turning point was deciding I wanted to pay it forward. In my life, the kindness of strangers has helped me. I got a college education that way. I’ve never learned the name of the person that was my benefactor. Philanthropic intent gives my life meaning and purpose. I went through a year of training with the Rockefeller Foundation’s Philanthropy Workshop. I’ve learned how to stretch my money, how to be diligent about how and why I give and to be true to my personal mission.

What’s your book about?

I’ve written it over the course of 10 years. I wasn’t intending at first to publish it. I had to learn the craft of nonfiction. I took classes, joined a writer’s group, hired coaches and educated myself. The book is being published by a not-for-profit publisher, Deep Vellum. The launch is in December at Arts & Letters Live. The net proceeds will benefit underserved women, girls and youth education.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

I’m proud of finishing my book. I’m proud of the ways I’ve touched lives through my philanthropic intent. I don’t always do it in a big way with a huge amount of money. This is my personal money. I don’t have inherited money. I work with, for instance, Connect Teach, which is about teaching slum children in India and getting them access to good teachers through the internet.

What’s the background on your LEED Gold home. I wanted to build a green home. I was living in a gated community and they thwarted me. My

daughter had the same intent. We had a family meeting and both built green homes next door to one another.

Tell me about the art collection in your home. I have a home in Santa Fe, and it has a lot of art in it too. I’ve done remodels or built new homes and put my mark on them. Artists tell me it’s what makes my home personal, warm and inviting.

How do you feel about getting the “outstanding philanthropist” award?

I didn’t go around trying to get a lot of publicity for myself. At first I was doing things anonymously. But then I learned, mostly from when I was on the board of KERA about 15 years ago, that advocating for what you believe in is a powerful tool.

Who is your greatest influence?

My book tells the story of how my past influenced me. I was raised in an immigrant boarding house in Hartford, Connecticut. My mother was a Polish immigrant, and she ran the boarding house. For 14 years when I lived there, immigrant families passed through my life. Most were kind strangers who were there for a brief time. They influenced me.

What advice would you give to your younger self? Know yourself, cherish yourself, celebrate your life, celebrate who you are. Make good choices.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I try to celebrate every day in some way. Bonnie Pitman, who was head of the Dallas Museum of Art, lives a life that I admire. Her message is to do something new every day. No matter the adversity, no matter how sick you might feel or how little energy you might have, do something new. And that means pushing past your comfort level.

SUZE OR LOSE

GILBERT GARCIA’S RESTAURANT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD SPOT FOR ALL SEASONS

AT SUZE IN THE VILLAGE OF PRESTON HOLLOW, don’t be surprised if chef and owner Gilbert Garcia stops by with a mysterious treat.

“I want you guys to try this,” he says. “I’m not going to tell you what it is.” Five minutes later, he returns and asks what you think. It’s wonderful, but what is it? Green beans? Asparagus? Garcia delights in whipping out a cactus paddle.

Crispy nopalito tempura is one of the delicacies at Suze, which was featured on the cover of Bon Appetit’s “Great Neighborhood Restaurants” in 2002 and USA Today’s “10 great places for a down-to-earth meal” in 2003. The restaurant is entering its 20th year.

Before Central Market moved into the Village, the restaurant was in a 1,734-squarefoot room for its first 17 years. Now Suze fills a 4,090-square-foot space with a full bar and herb-scented patio outfitted with misters and a sound system. Inside the dining room, Garcia

has a penchant for playing retro TV shows — “I Love Lucy,” “Speed Racer,” “The Ed Sullivan Show” and more.

Known primarily for its dinners, Suze recently began serving lunch on Fridays and Saturdays.

“There’s everything right about simplicity,” says Garcia, who graduated from the California Culinary Academy and began working in his grandfather’s restaurant, Gilbert’s El Charro in Tyler, at the age of 11 during the summers. “Restraint is something that I’m constantly trying to impress upon my guys.”

Garcia has created what he calls a dichotomous menu — one for the patio and bar that does not encompass a full meal and another for the dining room.

Favorites on the patio and bar menu include the grilled king salmon carpaccio, chilled snapper agua chile and Kobe beef carpaccio. Baby burgers come in several varieties — THC

(charred tomato and jalapeno); Korean (pickled carrot, cilantro and mint with Korean BBQ glaze); PKM (pickles, ketchup and mustard); or classic cheese.

The most popular dining room menu items are the Kobe beef carpaccio and Prince Edward Island mussels as starters, and the veal Bolognese, wild mushroom-filled ravioli with white truffle essence and almond crusted Idaho rainbow trout as entrees.

“We try to mix things up so we have a balance of hearty with not so heavy,” he says.

Count on Garcia to also feature eight to 10 items on special every night — pharaoh quail or buffalo, for example. He prides himself on remembering customers’ preferences and dietary needs and cooking off menu. “I had a guy call me and say, ‘I’m coming in tonight.’ I know he loves lobster and veal, but he will not eat game meat. He’s critical of beef and there are types of fish that he likes.”

Garcia, who lives 2 miles from the restaurant, remembers the son of a favorite customer who came to dinner

before prom. Garcia knew the student liked rabbit, so he had it ready for him. Another customer had touted how he had lost weight by cutting out carbs and sugars. “I made him a roasted tomato curry soup, Bolognese with charred kale instead of pasta, Akaushi Kobe and a stir fry of cauliflower, wild mushrooms and charred green beans.”

Garcia has gone so far as to pick up a customer who drives a truck too

big to park in the Village of Preston Hollow but hadn’t mastered Uber or Lyft. “My customers mean more to me than the restaurant,” he says.

“This is where people come to take communion. They’re with their families, celebrating life, engagements, the spirit of being together or the life of someone who has passed. I feel privileged that they’ve chosen us to spend those moments with.”

RESTAURANT GUIDE

DID YOU KNOW?

When Suze hosted a party for Sen. Al Franken, the politician held a menu too close to a candle and caught it on fire. Owner and chef Gilbert Garcia grabbed the paper, looked him in the eye and calmly crumbled the menu to put out the flames.

ESD’s selfless student

Olivia Abbott , a student at the Episcopal School of Dallas (class of 2021) raised money to provide backpacks and school supplies for Foster Elementary. As part of the Academic Service Program, many of ESD’s Spanish V students partner with the school to strengthen their secondary language skills. The “Conversation Club” gives students the opportunity to practice Spanish and get to know local elementary students. Abbott, however, took it further.

Inspired by the students she met through the program, Abbott created a fundraiser to provide school supplies and backpacks for students at the school. She collected funds and items throughout the summer and delivered 30 backpacks full of a year’s worth of school supplies.

The Trash Collectors Of Del Roy Drive

Real estate broker Eliza Solender and attorney Gary Scott have lived on Del Roy Drive since 2013, but their Sunday mornings are now devoted to neighborhood trash.

On morning walks, the couple noticed the area along North Eastern Avenue was overgrown. They assumed the City of Dallas was responsible for it. “The bushes were practically to the middle of the street,” Solender says. “You couldn't walk along the curb because of the overgrown bushes, and there was significant trash — everything from old furniture to paint cans.”

The two were also troubled by the untrimmed trees and trash along Inwood Road on Inwood Parkway. When they approached City officials, they say they were told Oncor was responsible for the upkeep along Eastern and that it was difficult to send workers frequently enough to pick up trash along Inwood because of the vast amount of garbage.

“Gary and I said, ‘That's it. I can't

stand it anymore,’” Solender says. They started spending Sunday mornings picking up trash on the quarter of a mile along Eastern. They also negotiated with Oncor and secured a letter of agreement from the company for the neighborhood, allowing neighbors to maintain the bushes and shrubs and detailing what they could plant that wouldn’t interfere with the power lines. Next, Solender and Scott turned to the Caladium Club to ask 130 neighbors to raise money to pay for the bi-monthly maintenance of the shrubbery along Eastern and the 27 live oaks and red oaks on Inwood Parkway.

Picking up trash along Eastern can be treacherous. There’s poison ivy among the bushes. Scott once received 40 red ant bites on his left arm and shoulder. Still, the two continue their ritual, filling trash bags, Solender donning a large straw hat and Scott manning a trash picker tool.

Neighbors stop to say good morning, thank them and

give high-fives. “Other people are now picking up trash,” Solender says. “These kinds of things can be contagious.” Another neighbor arranged to paint over the graffiti on the Tollway wall.

Says Solender, “We're trying to keep our neighborhood attractive and make it safer.”

Methodists and undies

The United Methodist Church of Preston Hollow adopted Preston Hollow Elementary School. Members provide underwear to the nurse’s office through an “Undie Sunday” worship service project. The church also serves a Thanksgiving luncheon to the teachers. The church sponsors about 50 children each year as Angel Tree families and buys Christmas presents for them. Members secretly distribute the presents to the parents during a “Breakfast with Santa,” while the children listen to Santa tell a story. For more information, go to umcprestonhollow.com.

The Waterman of Edgemere

David Alexander Dunaway moved to 6347 Northwood in 1998, but now he spends early mornings with hose in hand watering the small live oak trees planted in the parkway on Edgemere between Northwest Highway and Northwood. Neighbor Susan Cox calls him her superhero: “The Waterman.”

Once a week, in the early morning, he stretches the hose from his home to the median and fills gallon jugs of water to nurture the crepe myrtles and live oak trees.

One tree, after a brutal trim, was thought to be lost, but Dunaway continued to water it. He set up stakes to protect it, watered it and now sees new signs of growth. He’s open to neighbors who can suggest a charitable trimmer.

Dunaway’s 19-year-old daughter, a graduate of the Ursuline Academy, tells him she’s going to erect a bench in the median when he dies. “I just put the hoses out there,” he says. “It’s not really that much work.” But small works multiplied by consistency counts.

Rotarians to the rescue

The Preston Center Rotary Club sponsors programs at Casa Del Lago, which provides English instruction to moms who have a different first language, while their children are in school. The club also partners with El Bueno Pastures, a predominantly Hispanic church. Members are working on a web series in hopes of raising awareness about autism. Fired up about our fire fighters

Neighbor John Campbell of Hillcrest Forest shared on NextDoor that his partially disabled mother-inlaw fell, and he was not strong enough to help her. “We tried everything and then agreed to call 911,” he said. “I had no choice, even though I knew this might be very expensive.”

He says a fire truck pulled up within five minutes and three men came in the house. “One lifted the dear woman like it was nothing,” Campbell says. When she asked how much she owed them, one of the firefighters laughed and then the saviors drove off. “I was shocked,” he said. “I’ve never seen this. This was public service at its best.”

In response, neighbors shared that they bring steak, sweets and food to various fire stations.

“Firemen always came quick to help my dad get up after a fall,” Rebecca Brown says. “They are amazing! When I think about it, I usually take sweets to the Preston Royal station, and they are super appreciative.”

Driving Chinedu

Chinedu Ikene, 19, was a member of the youth group at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church after moving to Dallas from Nigeria in 2017. After working on his authorization paperwork, he realized he needed to learn how to drive. Marty Loman, church youth sponsor for 14 years, stepped up.

The father of four girls, Loman had been through the drill. He volunteered to pick up Ikene at his apartment before church every Sunday for a half an hour or hour of driving time to help him get his learner’s permit.

“I followed the same outline that I used with my daughters,” says Loman, who has been a member of the church for 16 years. “Figure out how to drive straight, right and left turns.”

Ikene, now a student at Richland College studying cyber security, says it was a challenge to keep the car moving straight at first. “I got the hang of it in the parking lot, and he said, ‘OK, let’s hit the street now.’ And I was like, ‘Uh-oh. I don’t think I’m ready for that.’”

The two progressed. Ikene drove on Preston Road and Royal Lane, dealing with stoplights and then tackling the highway. Driving at a high rate of speed led to a panic attack with cars honking, but Loman steered him to a side street to get his bearings. “I got the hang of it,” Ikene says.

Ikene now has his driver’s license and has been driving himself to school in his mom’s car, a 2010 Toyota, since the beginning of the semester. He hopes to get his own car soon.

How calm was Loman? “He wasn’t scared at all,” Ikene says. “He wasn’t putting too much pressure on me. It made me more confident.”

Protectors of the homeless

The Miltenberger family received Family Gateway’s inaugural Annette G. Strauss Community Service Award for serving families affected by homelessness. The late Annette Strauss, former Dallas mayor, was the founder of Family Gateway.

Paula, a licensed psychologist and founder of Women’s Mental Wellness, and Bay, CEO of JLB Partners, and their children, Bryce, Bo, Brooks and Brady, first became involved with the nonprofit in 2009, when they prepared a shelter room at the Annette G. Strauss Family Gateway Center for a new family’s arrival.

In 2011, they organized the adoption of 75 families during the holidays and have been involved in the holiday program ever since, arranging donation drives and volunteering in the holiday store. With the help of friends, they ensure dozens of kids get to attend summer camp at Kids Across America Kamp in Missouri.

Paula co-chaired the Gateway to Opportunity Luncheon in 2016 and 2017 and now serves on the board of directors. Bay, a former member of the board of directors, now sits on Family Gateway’s Affordable Housing Board.

DESIGN

LIVING BEAUTIFULLY IN PRESTON HOLLOW

ARTISTIC CARETAKER

Most think residents of Preston Tower favor mid-century modern, but Tim Brown has packed his two-bedroom condominium with art, furniture and collectibles fitting of a museum.

A social worker, Brown works for Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System, where he supervises 173 social workers and six programs. He’s lived in Preston Tower for three years with his two parakeets. His mother resides on the 16th floor.

“I’ve always liked older things and been drawn to art,” says Brown, who studied professional painting in junior high and high school. “Home is important to me because social work can be challenging. I like to think of myself as a caretaker to these pieces of art so I can share them with the next generation.”

The living room boasts an 18th century French bibliotheque, a pair of 18th century Japanese panels and two 19th century carved temple foo dogs. His paintings range from a sketch painting of Joseph Delattre, a French painter of the Rouen school, a 19th century still life by British artist William H. Smith and an 18th century portrait of Sir Horatio Nelson to an allegorical painting of the English defeating the Ottoman Empire. There’s a 19th century French Empire rams head chandelier in the dining room, a 19th century Chinese jade bowl, an 18th century carved Buddha and a French Art Nuevo Gilt mirror.

Brown’s great-grandmother and great-aunt were artists. “My great-grandmother always said, ‘Save your nickels, pennies and dimes. Buy the best you can, and you will cherish it the rest of your life.’ I’ve always been careful with my money, and I’ll watch for opportunities.”

Brown has amassed his collection during travels. He found the foo dogs during a 2006 trip to Taiwan for an international orchid conference. On tour, he visited a Buddhist temple where he spoke with monks about restoration work there. Since they were replacing them with new pieces, the monks agreed to accept a donation to the temple in exchange for the pieces.

A French Empire mahogany bed was acquired in Atlanta and resized. He found a Federal Giltwood convex mirror with eagle crest at an estate sale in Palm Beach, Florida. It was missing an eye, and Brown found a replacement in a gem store in Santa Fe. He monitored a German grandfather clock in San Antonio for five years. It was owned by an Our Lady of Lake chemistry professor, whose hobby was collecting clocks.

At an auction, Brown was determined to acquire a hunting trophy painting of pheasant and other game birds by a Belgian artist. He and a dealer bid back and forth repeatedly, and he finally relented. A month later, he was still thinking about the painting. He wrote the auctioneer asking for the shop owner who’d acquired the piece to contact him. A week later, a woman with a Southern accent called and said, “I understand you’re interested in my painting.” Brown said, “Yes ma’am.” She said, “I have some good news and some bad news.” Brown thought, “She’s going to stick it to me.” The woman said, “The bad news is that the painting sold, but the good news is, her husband hated it.” Brown drove to East Texas to pick it up.

Brown’s favorite piece, a still life by French painter Prosper Gabrielle Audran, is in the dining room. Born in 1744, Audran was a student of his uncle Benoit II, but abandoned art and became a Hebrew teacher in the College de France

26 prestonhollow.advocatemag.com november 2019
The stories behind Tim Brown’s antiques are as stunning as the pieces in his collection

in Paris. “You’re seeing the beauty of life, the finality of life and the circle of life all in one painting.”

Brown thrills in the search. He’s had his eye on a French still life for 20 years that has been at several galleries in Dallas and now is at Forestwood Antiques Mall.

His guilty pleasure is watching “Antique Roadshow,” of course. “When it’s on, I’m like, ‘Leave me alone. Don’t call me. I’m not meeting with anybody.’”

and set up the orders. I couldn’t find anything. And then I realized if nothing is out there, I should make it.

Is this for moms?

I intended this for the doers. It’s aimed at a mom, just because I am a mom, and it solves my problems. But it’s really for a lot of other people. I have had men say, “I could do this for my whiskey tasting group.” It is for the people who find themselves in charge of collecting money. It just so happens that the doers are moms.

Have you had any great success stories? Every year someone in charge of our youth church group had to collect yearly dues, and every year she had to track down families to pay. Friends said, “It takes me three months to get all these payments.” So they put it all on PopUp and within two weeks everybody had paid their dues. She had the sizes for all the T-shirts and information she needed. I am trying to make life simpler.

Prior to this, did you have any experience in business or tech?

TOTALLY TAVARES

URSULINE GRADUATE LISA TAVARES is a doer, and her living room shows it. Amid Lego sets and PTA fliers, the former stay-at-home mom has created a home office for her new business, PopUp Funds, which is a way to set up a sale without creating a web storefront. In spite of having little experience in the tech sector, Tavares has launched herself into the business world with ferocity.

What was the inspiration for PopUp Funds?

I had a good friend who was diagnosed with cancer. We were trying to figure out how to raise money for medical bills. The same ideas are always thrown out. “Let’s do GoFundMe,” or “Let’s do T-shirts to show our support.” I thought, “I don’t want another T-shirt.” A friend and I designed a bracelet, but the problem was we had no way to market it other than just texting or randomly talking to people. I kept going online trying to find a way to create a quick pop-up shop. That’s all I wanted — a shop that would let me throw up a photo, send out a URL and let people pay

No. I was an education major, and I taught third grade. I then decided to stay at home with my kids and raise them, so for the past 13 years I have been doing that. I did a year of research and development for PopUp, and we launched last July. I don’t have training, but I know how to figure it out when I don’t know something — how to research and find the best answer. I will say I would not know what to do without my husband. He was a computer engineering major, and he knows how to develop all the tech stuff for me. We are great partners.

Do you have any advice for creating a business?

When my last child went to kindergarten, everybody asked what I’d do. I said, “I’m going to take a year and think.” They all just stared at me. I took that time. When they asked me about my business idea, they thought it would be sewing or selling something on Etsy. Instead I said, “I’m going to start an e-commerce site that specializes in short-term sales.” And then the conversation would be over. Take small steps. Keep researching, keep at it and don’t get overwhelmed by what you don’t know.

BETTER KNOW A NEIGHBOR
AN URSULINE GRAD ROCKS THE TECH WORLD WITH INNOVATION
Interview by SARAH NUNEZ-LAFONTAINE / Photography by DANNY FULGENCIO Lisa Tavares launched PopUp Funds to help facilitate sales.

Trust your gut. And when you get frustrated, walk away for a day or two, sometimes a week, and then come back and tackle it.

What are your memories of Ursuline?

I was a B s tudent in the Class of 1997, and I remember a teacher who told me, “You don’t need to worry. You are going to make it because you have the personality to make it, and that is what is most important. In the end, you will be fine.” Ursuline instilled in me that I could go out into the world and try anything. I felt like they were teaching us to be our greatest selves

and leaders for the community. My class was filled with headstrong personalities that continue to support each other to this day.

What advice would you give yourself?

To my younger self, I’d say, “It is OK to speak up for yourself.” I think about my kids and how I tell them when they want something at school, they need to vocalize it. As a child, I didn’t do that. To my older self, I’d say, “Take it easy. It is okay to sit down and read a magazine. Go to swim practice. Have a massage! You deserve it.”

How have you managed the work-life balance?

It’s a struggle. My husband has a full-time job, travels a lot and has late nights out. I am still the default parent. If a kid gets sick or there is a doctor’s appointment, I am the one. I work around their schedule. I went from being a parent who would always have a home-cooked meal on the table to, “Let’s have peanut butter and jelly tonight”. It is good for my children to see that mom works too.
