Mike Murley Septet

Jazz

Saxophonist, Mike Murley, is one of Canada’s most celebrated jazz artists. With fourteen Juno Award–winning recordings to his credit as a leader or sideman, Murley has enjoyed a career that has spanned a wide stylistic spectrum, including recordings with legendary Canadian artists such as the late Ed Bickert and Rob McConnell. More contemporary collaborations include projects with David Braid, David Occhipinti, and Metalwood. Murley has also recorded and performed with numerous international artists including David Liebman, Renee Rosnes, Norma Winstone, John Abercrombie, and Kenny Wheeler. The Mike Murley Septet showcases some of Canada’s finest jazz artists performing his original compositions.

Tanika Charles

R&B/Soul

Toronto–based two time Juno Award nominee and Soul music powerhouse, Tanika Charles, has slowly but surely inserted herself as a staple of the genre both at home and abroad. Her music revels in honesty and attitude, her live show is high energy and endearing, and she continues to win audiences over one album, one stream, and one encore at a time. In April 2022, Tanika released her third album, Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly Papillon again follows Tanika’s formula of marrying classic soul influences with modern sensibilities and features the songs “Frustrated”, “Million Ways”, and the disco–infused lead single “Different Morning” featuring Toronto rapper DijahSB.

The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For the past two decades, they have played with spirit and adventure, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance. Now in their twenty–first year, The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano–less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re–energizing their sound and inspiration. The Bad Plus have constantly searched to bridge genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

Contemporary Jazz

Mali Obomsawin is an award–winning bassist, songwriter, and composer from Abenaki First Nation at Odanak. With an expansive background in American roots, rock, and jazz, Obomsawin carries several music traditions. Mali’s debut album Sweet Tooth has received international acclaim since its release (Out of Your Head Records 2022), including rave reviews and “best of 2022” placement in The Guardian, JazzTimes, and NPR. A Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artist, they spent the years 2014–2021 touring internationally with beloved folk–rock band Lula Wiles. An in–demand bassist in the folk and jazz circuits, Mali appears often as an accompanist with contemporaries like Jake Blount and Lizzie No and has performed at premier festivals like Newport and Philly Folk Fest. She can also be found in galleries and creative music spaces with the likes of Peter Apfelbaum, Taylor Ho Bynum, and Bill Cole's Untempered Ensemble. In addition to their artistic work, Obomsawin is a community organizer dedicated to land justice and tribal sovereignty.
