Con la fuerza de transformación del fútbol

l umbral de la Copa América de Chile nos encuentra orgullosos de que la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino haya sido puente de una acción solidaria que vuelve a demostrar el tenor de la fuerza de transformación que posee el fútbol. En la visita al Papa Francisco a Roma se rubricó el proyecto Goles por Scholas, a partir del cual la Conmebol (de la que la AFA es parte) le donará 10.000 dólares al programa educativo Scholas Occurrentes por cada gol o cada penal atajado durante el tiempo regular de los partidos del certamen. Y la promesa de trabajo en conjunto se extiende a las ediciones de 2016, 2019, 2023 y 2027. Un verdadero golazo en pos de ayudar a los niños en situación de vulnerabilidad de nuestra región y la prueba de que el compromiso de todos los protagonistas de este maravilloso deporte excede a los designios de la pelota. El fútbol no sólo tiene impacto desde el punto de vista solidario. También le hace su aporte a la economía de nuestro país, una verdad que se hace incontrastable a partir del trabajo “La contribución del fútbol a la Economía Argentina”, realizado por un equipo de especialistas de la UBA. A partir del interesante informe se puede concluir que por cada peso gastado por los clubes se generan 3.7 pesos adicionales en otros sectores de la economía. O que la venta de entradas y el abono de las cuotas sociales es una fuente de vital importancia para el mantenimiento de los clubes argentinos. Otro ejemplo concluyente de lo que genera esta pasión que compartimos.
With the transformative power of football

s we are on the verge of playing the Copa America in Chile, we are proud to see the Argentine Football Association function as a bridge for a charitable cause that shows once again the transformative power football has. During our visit to Pope Francis in Rome, the project Goles por Scholas, through which Conmebol (an entity the AFA is part of) will donate USD 10,000 for every goal scored and every penalty kick saved in the tournament during regulation time to the educational program Scholas Occurentes. The promise of joint efforts extends to the 2016, 2019, 2023 and 2027 Copa America editions. A true golazo in pursuit of helping kids in vulnerable situations in our region, which proves that the protagonists of this wonderful sport are committed to more than just what happens on the pitch. Football’s impact is not limited to the charitable side of things. It also has a contribution to our country’s economy, a fact that becomes indisputable through the paper “La contribución del fútbol a la Economía Argentina” (Football’s contribution to the Argentine economy), produced by a team of specialists from the University of Buenos Aires. This interesting report concludes that for every peso spent by football clubs, there are another 3.7 pesos generated by other sectors of the country’s economy. Or that tickets sales and monthly membership payments are a vital source for Argentine clubs’ existence. This is another conclusive example of what this universal passion generates.

Ellos tres, al cabo, son el presente de un fructífero pasado, y en el futuro quieren ser parte del pilón de retratos de los campeones mundiales Sub 20. Nicolás Tripichio es un todoterreno. Tomás Martínez, un derroche de talento. Y Giovanni Simeone, se sabe, lleva el gol entre los dientes. Cada uno en su rol, cada uno con su personalidad, los tres vienen desde hace rato transitando el camino y compartiendo vivencias en celeste y blanco. Los tres estuvieron en el plantel argentino Sub 17 que hizo semifinales en Emiratos Árabes 2013, fueron también piezas fundamentales en el reciente título sudamericano y lo que ahora buscan es que este proceso que conduce Humberto Grondona finalmente se vea coronado en Nueva Zelanda. Y ahí, entonces, podrán reflejarse en el álbum de los eternos laureles. O juremos con gloria maorí...

And here we are now…after missing a previous appointment at the U-20 World Cup, with these three players seeing in pictures what they didn’t see on TV. They remember what they were told about that, while they pose for the AFA Magazine and they relive what they always dreamed about. The three of them, at the end of the day, are the present of a glorious past. And in the future, they want to be part of that picture book of U-20 World Cup champions. Nicolas Tripichio is an all-round player. Tomas Martinez is gifted with plenty of talent. And Giovanni Simeone, this is well-known, is a natural goal-scorer. Each in their own role, each with his own personality, they have all been on the same road for a while, sharing their experiences in blue and white. They three of them were part of the U-17 Argentina which reached the semifinals at the United Arab Emirates 2013 World Cup. They were also key members of the team that won the recent South American U-20 Championship and what they want know is to crown this project led by Humberto Grondona, with the top prize in New Zealand. It’ll be then, when they would finally be their pictures on that album of eternal laurels. They are going for glory in the land of the Maori.

Preparation for the Copa Indoamericana was a dream for our brand new national team, who got inside the Ezeiza base and shared some moments with the U-20.

Fueron, para los chicos, elegidos a través del CPI (Consejo de Participación Indígena), dos semanas de ensueño. ¿O quién no quisiera llegar al predio todos los días en el mismo micro en el que viajan los cracks de la Selección para, luego, entrenarse en donde practican las estrellas albicelestes? “Es muy interesante vivir esta experiencia. Y, la verdad, me sorprendió el progreso que mostraron los chicos a lo largo de los días que compartimos. Tienen muchas ganas de aprender y lo están haciendo”, comentó Pogany, quien diez días antes de la competición tendrá que hacer el corte definitivo de 18 jugadores.

Todos, felices nuevos integrantes de la flamante Selección Argentina de Pueblos Originarios, que durante dos semanas de abril estuvo entrenándose en el predio de Ezeiza bajo las órdenes de Miguel Ángel Lemme primero, y de Esteban Pogany después, para disputar la Copa Indoamericana de Chile, la cual tiene al 18 de julio como fecha tentativa de largada.
El INAI (Instituto Nacional de Asuntos Indígenas), que depende del Ministerio de Desarrollo Social de Nación, financió el traslado hasta Buenos Aires y el hospedaje. El Director del Observatorio del deporte, Claudio Moressi, estableció el vínculo con la AFA, que aportó el cuerpo técnico, las instalaciones y todo lo que necesitan los chicos para disfrutar de esta grata aventura.

The INAI (National Institute of Indigenous Matters), which depends on the Ministry of National Social Development, financed the kids’ transportation to Buenos Aires and their accommodation. The Director of the Sports Observatory, Claudio Morresi, established a link with the AFA, which provided the coaching staff, the facilities and everything the kids need to enjoy this pleasant adventure.

After a shaky start, Lemme’s Argentina U-17 raised its game in Paraguay, won the derby against Brazil and almost won the title. Like the U20, they will be at the World Cup. And like the full national team, they’ll travel to Chile.
“El balance fue bueno. No empezamos de la mejor forma, es cierto, pero logramos afianzarnos y finalmente conseguimos lo que fuimos a buscar: la clasificación”, resume Miguel Ángel Lemme. En pocas palabras, el entrenador sentenció lo que dejó su equipo en la cita continental. Las derrotas consecutivas ante Ecuador y Paraguay en el inicio del certamen generaron una entendible preocupación en el búnker del equipo nacional. El quiebre fue antes de la etapa decisiva de la primera fase. Enojados por los resultados y el rendimiento, los chicos se juntaron en la concentración y se prometieron mejorar. Y vaya que lo hicieron. El doblete de Pablo Ruiz para la goleada contra Bolivia marcó el camino de la recuperación.

Highs and lows from start to end, which ended with the team as runnersup in the South American U-17 Championship. Would you like to take a ride? Come on and join this group of players who now have the luxury to dream about a World Cup.
“The balance is good. We didn’t start very well, it’s true, but we managed to consolidate and we finally got what we went looking for: a ticket for the World Cup”, sums up Miguel Angel Lemme. In a few words, the manager defined what his team showed during the continental competition. Consecutive defeats to Ecuador and Paraguay at the start of the tournament understandably caused concern among players and staff. The breaking point came before the final match in the group stage. Angry at their results and performances, the boys got together and promised themselves they would improve. And improve they did. A brace from Pablo Ruiz helped sealed the hammering of Bolivia on the way to recovery.

Después, se dio la gran aparición del torneo. Un chiquito eléctrico, con enorme capacidad de salto y una zurda picante. ¿Quién? Tomás Conechny. Su cabezazo anotador le permitió a Argentina vencer a Chile y superar el grupo. Vital en el ataque albiceleste, Chucky inició la jugada del gol de Berterame en el clásico contra Brasil en la apertura del Hexagonal Final. Pero eso no fue todo. Explotó contra el local, ya que abrió y cerró la goleada 4-1 contra Paraguay en su partido consagratorio. “El torneo me dejó una experiencia muy linda, viví cosas inolvidables. Hubo buena calidad de partidos, todos muy intensos”, fue el análisis del goleador que se destaca en las Inferiores de San Lorenzo. Tras ese positivo arranque en la etapa definitoria, la Selección ya no pudo volver a ganar. El empate contra Colombia en Capiatá, con gol del Gringo Roskopf, casi que le aseguró el pasaje mundialista. A continuación aparecieron Uruguay y sus necesidades. La Celeste aprovechó y se puso en ventaja, pero con un segundo tiempo a puro corazón los chicos descontaron y estuvieron a nada de igualar el encuentro con dos jugadores menos. Lo impidieron los palos de la cancha de Libertad... La definición, por ende, fue atrapante. La última fecha, que se jugó en Luque, tenía a cinco de los seis equipos en discusión por el título y las plazas para Chile 2015. El empate sin goles ante los ecuatorianos dejó a nuestros juveniles sin chances de título, pero con la confirmación de haberse subido al podio para colgarse la medalla de plata sudamericana. Con el corazón. Así jugó la Selección. Los chicos dejaron todo en cada jornada y se quedaron en la puerta del gran festejo. Con la humildad que mostró en la concentración y durante la estadía en Paraguay, este plantel irá por más. Lo que viene será nada menos que el Mundial, que se jugará del 17 de octubre al 8 de noviembre del otro lado de la Cordillera.

He made it big against the hosts, as he opened and closed the account in a 4-1 win over Paraguay, in what was his breakthrough game. “This tournament left me with a very nice experience. I lived unforgettable things. The quality of the matches was good, all of them very intense”, was the San Lorenzo striker’s take on the events. After that positive start of the final round, Argentina couldn’t win again. The draw against Colombia in Capiatá, with a goal scored by “The Gringo” Roskopf, almost guaranteed a place in the World Cup. After that, it was time to face Uruguay and their needs. The Celeste got in front, but during a second half in which they showed a lot of heart, the Argentine boys cut the distance to one goal and went really close to leveling things playing with nine players against 11. The woodwork at Libertad stadium prevented them from getting a draw. The final chapter was enthralling. @ulisessasovsky: ¿Para la Copa América qué va a priorizar en el armado del equipo, continuidad en la Selección o actualidad futbolística? -En algunos casos hay jugadores de mucha trayectoria en la Selección, que eventualmente pueden tener un pasaje malo en su club pero a nadie se le ocurriría dejarlo afuera. Como sucede con Di María. Preferiría que estuviera contento y que sea un jugador decisivo, como lo ha sido siempre, tanto en el Benfica como en el Real Madrid, pero no se me ocurriría que esta situación puntual le quite posibilidades en la Copa América. Y después también hay otros casos de convocatorias por rendimiento. Hay de todo tipo.
@gmqz_55: ¿Hay posibilidad de ver a Pastore como titular en la Copa América? ¿En qué puesto lo ve más firme? -Bueno, de hecho Javier ha jugado en los últimos amistosos, ha rendido muy muy bien, y tiene un muy buen pasar en el PSG. Y en cuanto a la posición en la que lo imagino, calculo que en la que lo vemos todos: o delante de un doble 5 o al costado izquierdo de un volante central. Tengo grandes expectativas con respecto al rendimiento que pueda tener y al aporte que pueda hacerle a la Selección.

Previous experiences with the National Team or form? -In some cases, there are players with a long career playing with the National Team who could be going through a rough spell at their clubs, but nobody could think of leaving them out. That’s the case with Di Maria. I’d rather he’d be happy and continued to be a decisive player, like he was for Benfica and Real Madrid, but I wouldn’t even think his current situation will hurt his chances of going to Copa America. And then there are other cases in which players get called up based on their form. It’s a bit of everything.
@gmqz_55: Are there chances we see Pastore as a starter in Copa America? In which position do you think he’s best? -Well, in fact, Javier has played in our last friendlies and had a very, very good performance and he’s doing fine at PSG. As for the position I see him at, I guess it’s the one we all see: ahead of the two defensive midfielders or to the left of a lone central midfielder. A mí particularmente me gustan los equipos que tienen un solo centrodelantero y dos extremos. Pero no descarto que en algún momento del partido podamos utilizar a dos centrodelanteros. No lo contemplo para iniciar un partido, pero sí para algún momento crucial, trascendental, donde tengamos que recurrir a cuestiones extremas porque por ahí nos estamos quedando afuera de una competencia. Pero el estar dispuesto al cambio ya marca que no hay ninguna rigidez con respecto a contemplar algunas cuestiones en diferentes partes, no solamente respecto a poner a dos 9.
@GusTorchia: Why would you stick to one system and because of it, deny yourself the possibility of playing with two strikers? -Us managers normally live and go about with our own footballing taste. Particularly, I like teams with only one striker and two wingers. But I don’t rule out that at certain points during a match we could use two target men. I don’t think about it to start a match, but I do for certain crucial moments when we have to resort to extreme measures because we are facing the possibilities of getting knocked out of a competition. The fact that I’m willing to change, tells you there is no rigidity regarding contemplating some matters in different areas, not just regarding the use of two number 9s.

@JonatanGDR: Why do you see Tevez and Agüero as number 9s if both of them play at their clubs as a second forward with a number 9 playing next to them? -True about Tevez. He plays with Llorente or Morata. Agüero doesn’t always play with Dzeko and sometimes he’s the one playing furthest up the pitch. The thing is, when adapting to the system we have with Argentina, the position they have to play at is that of the number 9. Because we will hardly play with another forward behind the number 9. @MartinLemme: Are you worried Romero doesn’t play too often for his club? -So far, I’m not. Until the middle of this year, when his contract runs out and his situation changes, I’m not worried. But we will be paying a lot of attention to what happens next season, because it’d be a lot of time of not playing for him. Even though there was a period between December and January in which he played a lot for his team and when he joined us for our last tour he had been inactive for some time and his reaction was very positive, it’s also true that if this goes on it’ll become a worry.

@santinimejia: ¿Cómo se lo convence al futbolista de jugar de una determinada manera, como por ejemplo salir jugando desde atrás? -Para mí es el tiempo, las repeticiones, el trabajo, ir viendo cómo se solucionan las dificultades. Porque no es solamente salgan jugando y el progreso en la cancha háganlo como ustedes quieran. Es ver de qué manera nos desplegamos, quién cierra, quién abre, qué pasa cuando presiona el rival, quién profundiza, cómo se saltean las líneas. Me parece que el acostumbrarse a equivocarse en el entrenamiento hace que pierdas el temor al error, porque ya te equivocaste tantas veces que lo tenés incorporado. Para ejemplificar: yo creo que el primer tiempo de Portugal fue tan bueno como el segundo ante Ecuador. Pero con Portugal perdimos y con Ecuador ganamos. Y en esta instancia de la instalación de una idea, a rendimientos iguales, hace mucha diferencia en la cabeza del futbolista el resultado final.
@santinimejia: How do you convince a player to play in a certain way, for example, playing the ball on the floor from the back? -For me, it’s about the time, the repetition, the work, seeing how you solve problems. Because it’s not just playing it on the floor from the back and then progress up the pitch as you see fit. It’s seeing how we spread on the pitch, who’s staying central, who’s going wide, what happens when our rivals pressure us, who goes deep, how do you break their lines. I think getting used to making mistakes in training makes you lose that fear of doing it wrong, because you failed so many times you accept it and live with it. For example, I think our first half against Portugal was as good as our second against Ecuador. But we lost to Portugal and we beat Ecuador. At the stage we’re at, when we’re trying to install an idea, with similar performances, the final result makes a big difference in the players’ heads.
@WalterPradal: ¿Piensa salir jugando de abajo en todas aunque lo presionen bien arriba? -Me parece que lo que nosotros tenemos que entrenar es la forma de salir jugando para sortear las dificultades que te crean los rivales que te presionan arriba. Para eso debemos ejercitarnos muchas horas, repetir diferentes tipos de salidas con diversos grados de dificultad, para que podamos salir jugando, a lo mejor no siempre con la pelota por abajo, sino produciendo un salteado de líneas para evitar esa presión, pero siempre con la idea de conservar la pelota.
@WalterPradal: Do you plan on playing it on the floor from the back at all times even if the rival pressures high up the pitch? -I think what we have to train is the way to play it from the back to avoid the difficulties created by rivals who will pressure high up. In order to do that, we must train for hours, repeat different types of plays with a variety of difficulty degrees, so we can play it from the back, maybe not always with the ball on the floor, but breaking lines to avoid that pressure. Always with the idea to keep possession of the ball.
@maxinobxbox: ¿Por qué no lo convoca a Milton Casco, si la intención es jugar con laterales ofensivos? -Porque uno de los argumentos que tenemos los entrenadores para convocar a un futbolista a la Selección es el rendimiento. No alcanza con que Guzmán juegue bien con los pies para estar en la Selección. Y no alcanza con que Milton sea un lateral ofensivo para estar en la Selección. Además lo tiene que acompañar con buenos rendimientos, y consideramos que Milton aún no está en el nivel que nosotros le conocemos para estar en la Selección.
@maxinobxbox: Why don’t you call up Milton Casco if you are trying to play with attacking full-backs? -Because one of the reasons us managers have to call up a player to the National Team is their performances. It’s not enough for Guzman to play well with his feet to be in the National Team. And it’s not enough reason Milton is an attacking full-back for him to be in the National Team. On top of it, he needs to back that up with good performances and we consider Milton is not lately at a level we know he is capable of to be in the National Team.
@linosuiffet: ¿Por qué cambiar tan drásticamente la forma de juego cuando hace muy poco tiempo casi somos campeones con otra idea? -Porque es difícil cuando hay un cambio de entrenador que todos tengan una comunión en cuanto a la idea de juego. Está claro que, en la decisión dirigencial, entre la salida de Sabella y la llegada nuestra, se contemplaba en ese cambio una variable en la forma de jugar. En estos casos donde se quiere respetar una misma idea de juego a lo mejor lo ideal en un club sería poner a alguien del club que haya ido creciendo con el entrenador saliente. Y eso acá no se da.
@linosuiffet: Why changing so drastically our way of playing when very recently we almost win the World Cup with a different idea? -Because it’s difficult when there is a change of manager that all of them would have the same philosophy. It’s clear that, in the decision from the Board, between Sabella’s exit and our arrival, a change of philosophy was contemplated. In these cases, when the idea is to respect the same philosophy, maybe the ideal solution at a club would be to put in charge someone from the club who has been growing up with the outgoing manager. But that can’t happen here.

@jamarquesjunior: ¿Cuál es la mayor dificultad para cambiar la filosofía de juego, ya que tiene conceptos diferentes al DT anterior? -La mayor dificultad cuando se produce un cambio relativamente importante es la falta de tiempo. Y una vez logrado el funcionamiento, la necesidad imperiosa de que acompañen los resultados. Porque la última etapa del afianzamiento de una idea, lo que la ratifica, es el resultado. Es lo que hace que el jugador sienta que el camino que va recorriendo es positivo.
@jamarquesjunior: Which one is the biggest difficulty in changing the philosophy, knowing your concepts are different to those from the former manager? -The biggest difficulty when a relatively big change takes place is the lack of time. And once you manage to get the team functioning, the imperative need that results come along. Because in the last stage of the consolidation of a philosophy, what confirms it is the result. That’s what makes the player feel the path he is walking is the right one.

@santinimejia: Do you think the Youth teams must have the philosophy than the full National Team? -Yes. I think it’s necessary. Especially in the group closer to the full National Team and in this stage of the U-20 kids, they are not only close to the full National Team but to the Olympic Games, where the manager is the same as in the full National Team. To create a bond would help take less time to install a philosophy.
@germanfreiria: Sobre los jugadores Sub 20, ¿cuáles son los que mirás y que podrían ir a la Mayor? -Está claro que el Sub 20 ha tenido un gran Sudamericano. Y esperemos que repita en el Mundial. Es cierto que en estos casos los flashes siempre se los llevan el conductor, como Correa, que ha hecho un torneo maravilloso, o el goleador, como Simeone, que ha metido muchos goles, pero también han tenido un rendimiento muy alto los defensores, y a lo mejor ahí la aparición más importante es la de Mammana, y también ha sido trascendental el arquero, y los volantes han trabajado muy bien, y Espinoza por derecha lo mismo... Para la Celeste no será fácil defender el título obtenido en Argentina 2011. El contexto actual de la selección de Tabárez es totalmente diferente al de hace cuatro años. Entonces, Uruguay llegaba a la Copa América precedido por el cuarto puesto mundialista y con el mejor jugador de dicha cita, Diego Forlán. Aunque se mantiene buena base de aquel plantel que puso a la AUF como la asociación más ganadora de la Copa América con 15 títulos, hay un proceso de renovación. Ya no están Forlán, Lugano, el Ruso Pérez, Fucile ni Abreu. Uruguay sigue generando futbolistas de nivel internacional, aunque no llegarán a Chile con el roce internacional adecuado. Además de la baja de Luis Suárez, se debe añadir la ausencia por lesión de Martín Cáceres, a quien el Maestro catalogó como el Suárez de la defensa. La serie no es sencilla, pero Uruguay ya ha demostrado a lo largo de la historia que su grandeza es inversamente proporcional a su tamaño y que las adversidades no le pesan tanto como a otras selecciones.

El fútbol de Jamaica –y de todo el Caribe- es impredecible. Capaz de dar un buen partido y otros con tumbos inexplicables. Cuenta con un estilo potente y veloz, pero muy atolondrado y que técnicamente nunca ha sido muy dotado. A nivel Concacaf, Jamaica es un equipo que suele mostrar dos caras: fuerte de local, donde se beneficia por el calor y la complicada cancha de Kingston, pero sumamente endeble cuando juega de visitante. Tiene en Luton Shelton y Giles Barnes a sus máximas figuras, por lo que su ataque luce como lo más poderoso. Su defensa es lo peor debido a sus desatenciones en la marca, y con rivales de calibre del otro lado podría pasarla muy mal.

It won’t be easy for the Celeste to defend the title obtained in Argentina 2011. The current context of the team managed by Tabarez is totally different to that of four years ago. Back then, Uruguay arrived to the Copa America fresh from a fourth place in the World Cup and the tournament’s best player in Diego Forlan. Although a good part of the core of that team who made of Uruguay the most successful nation in Copa America’s history with 15 titles remains, there is an ongoing renovation process. Players like Forlan, Lugano, Perez, Fucile and Abreu are no longer around. Uruguay keeps producing world-class players, but they won’t be experienced enough in time for Chile 2015. To add to Luis Suarez’s unavailability, there is Martin Caceres’ injury, a player Tabarez branded as the Suarez of our defence. The group stage won’t be easy, but Uruguay have shown through the years that their greatness is inversely proportional to the size of the country and that adversity doesn’t hurt them as much as it hurts other teams.

Jamaica’s game –and that of the whole of the Caribbean- is unpredictable. They are capable of playing a good match and unexpectedly fall in others. They have a powerful and fast style, but very frantic and never known for being technically gifted. At Concacaf level, Jamaica are a team that normally show two faces: strong at home, benefited by the heat and the difficult pitch in Kingston, but extremely weak away from home. They have their best players in Luton Shelton and Giles Barnes, which is why their attack looks their best asset. Their defence is their weakest link due to constant distractions when marking, which could lead to a bad time when facing top opposition.

Pero la gira no sólo dejó sabor dulce por sendas victorias (y por el rendimiento frente al Tri, noche bajo aguanieve en la que se vio la circulación característica de los equipos del Tata), sino también porque volvió a confirmarse la comunión interna del plantel, la amalgama entre los nuevos y los históricos volvió a fluir fuera de la hierba, mate y foto compartida en redes sociales mediante. Aparte, se vio intacto el idilio de la gente con la Selección. En la célebre Universidad de Georgetown, de la que egresaron muchas figuras del deporte (como Patrick Ewing) o de la política (como Bill Clinton), Messi, Tevez, Mascherano, Romero, Lavezzi y otros tantos se quedaron firmando autógrafos una vez concluida la primera (y abierta al público) práctica en el DC. La calurosa espera de los fans se repitió en cada entrenamiento, hotel o estadio. Sí, aun en una tierra donde la pasión por el fútbol no es tan fértil como en otros lares, Argentina aglutinó fuertes latidos.

Such was this public showing of affection, that it continued during an NBA game. Prior to the match against El Salvador, the Argentina squad were invited to watch the Washington Wizards take on Luis Scola’s Indiana Pacers, who after the match went to say hello to Martino and his players, just as some local stars did. The giant screen showed Messi and his teammates and they got a standing ovation from the fans of the best basketball league in the world, who seem to know their “soccer” as well.

ario De Stefano es extrovertido, jocoso incurable, hincha de Racing. Juan Cruz Souto, hombre reservado, sereno, simpatizante de Independiente, su contrapeso. Los une la nobleza y el amor por el trabajo. Que no es un trabajo cualquiera. Porque Mario (54) y Juan Cruz (29) son los utileros de la Selección, ergo, tipos muy queridos por las estrellas del fútbol argentino. Porque es en la utilería de Ezeiza (o la que se monte en el búnker de turno cuando la Albiceleste sale del país por una gira o una competencia) donde los cracks se juntan a tomar mate, a ponerse al día, a retarse al truco o la PlayStation. Testigos, Marito y Juan en definitiva, de la intimidad de gran parte de la alcurnia del balompié mundial. No es ese privilegio, sin embargo, el que más disfrutan Marito y Juan, quienes trabajan en la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino desde hace 19 y 10 años, respectivamente. “Lo que más me gusta de mi trabajo es limpiar los botines”, cuenta Juan Cruz, a quien también le atraen las tareas físicas: los bolsos y los baúles no lo inhiben, más bien se encuentra a gusto cargando y descargando esos kilos y kilos de ropa, accesorios, objetos de limpieza y tantas cosas más que viajan con la utilería adonde sea que la Selección vaya. “Hasta caramelos y revistas les llevamos a los jugadores”, apunta Marito, cuyo mayor goce es “doblar las prendas”, pero “nada de limpiar los botines, eh”. Hasta en eso se balancea esta pareja, que sabe de memoria los talles de cada uno de los jugadores, incluso de los más nuevitos. Es que la ocupación es full time para todos: “Acá tratamos a los más famosos y a los que son citados por primera vez de la misma manera”, aseguran. Y no mienten.
Los primeros en ir a la cancha (cinco horas antes de la hora del partido) y a los entrenamientos, los últimos en irse y en comer y en dormir, Marito y Juan Cruz son “enamorados” de su actividad. “Yo lo veía de chico y quería ser como él”, cuenta Juan, hijo de Omar, Gerente de Selecciones. Y Marito se emociona. Aunque no tanto como cuando cuenta que fue su abuela quien le vaticinó su destino cuando los estudios no asomaban fáciles de domar. “Vos vas a trabajar en el fútbol”, fue el presagio. Y vaya si el nieto llegó a Primera...

ario De Stefano is an outgoing, funny guy and supports Racing Club. Juan Cruz Souto, a calm, reserved man who follows Independiente, is his counterpart. They are both united in their kindness and their love for work. Not just a regular job, because Mario (54) and Juan Cruz (29) are the Argentina kit men, meaning, they are guys who are loved by the Argentine football stars. Because it’s in the dressing room at Ezeiza (or wherever it is that the Albicelestes go touring out of the country or for a competition), where the stars get together to drink mate, catch up or challenge each other at a truco game or a PlayStation session. Mario and Juan, ultimately, are part and parcel of the lives of those at the very top of the world football stage.
It’s not that privilege, however, what Mario and Juan, who have been working for the Argentine Football Association for 19 and 10 years respectively, enjoy the most. “What I like the most about my job is to clean up the boots”, says Juan Cruz, who is also keen on the most physically-demanding activities: he’s not shy when it comes to carrying bags and trunks with equipment, in fact he likes carrying several kilos of football gear, accessories, cleaning articles and all those things that travel with the National Team wherever they go. “We even carry candy and magazines for the players”, adds Marito, whose biggest pleasure is “to fold the clothes, but don’t make me clean boots, eh!”. Even in choosing their favourite chores these two, who know by heart the sizes for every player’s clothing items (even the newcomers), find their right balance. They give full-time dedication to every player: “We treat the most famous players and those who are called up for the first time, in the same way”, they say. And they are not lying. They are the first to arrive at the stadium (five hours ahead of the match) and to training, they are the last to leave, to eat and to go to sleep. Marito and Juan Cruz are “in love” with their job. “I saw him when I was a kid and I wanted to be like him”, says Juan, son of Omar, a National Team Executive. And Marito gets emotional. Not as emotional as when he tells us it was his grandma who predicted his destiny when his studies were not progressing as expected: “You are going to work in football”, was her forecast. And boy did he make it to the top...

Por aquel entonces se estaba cerrando una etapa muy fuerte para la Selección, era el final del ciclo Bilardo y rondaba la incertidumbre por lo que sería el primer torneo después de Maradona. Fue inteligente y sincera la búsqueda de Basile: dentro del recambio masivo mantuvo una columna madura (Goycochea, Ruggeri, Caniggia) para que colaborara con la llegada de muchos proyectos de buenos futbolistas, jóvenes entusiastas que veníamos con una motivación muy grande. Y allí se armó una mixtura interesante. Eran otros tiempos, había otros plazos y, en tal sentido, ayudó a la alianza que el plantel estuviera compuesto por mayoría de jugadores del fútbol local, ya que entrenábamos todos juntos un par de días a la semana. Hoy los técnicos no cuentan con ese privilegio y está claro que no es lo mismo ver a tus jugadores por tele que tenerlos trabajando en el campo. Había, además, mucha empatía con el Coco, que bajaba un mensaje claro y sin dobleces. Lo suyo no era prueba y error, todo lo contrario: confiaba a pleno en lo que estaba haciendo. Y encontró muy rápido el funcionamiento de un equipo que era muy sensato para manejar los tiempos, que llegaba por sorpresa con Simeone o Franco y que tenía la necesidad de explotar los espacios para Caniggia y Batistuta, dos delanteros punzantes, con mucha química y en estado de gracia. Recuerdo que había arrancado yo jugando detrás de ellos y luego se afianzó Leo Rodríguez, más lanzador y funcional para el sistema de esa gran Selección que ganó invicta la Copa América.
Back in those days, a very important era for our national team was coming to an end. It was the end of the Bilardo’s tenure and there was some uncertainty of what would be of Argentina in the first international tournament in a long time without Maradona. Basile’s search for players was honest and intelligent: together with the many replacements he made, he kept a solid foundation with experienced players (Goycochea, Ruggeri, Caniggia) to collaborate with the up and coming, young and highly motivated players. That was when a very interesting mixture happened. Those were different times, there was less urgency and in that sense, what helped gelling the team together was the fact that most of us were playing in the local league, because we could train together a couple of times a week. Managers these days don’t have that privilege and it’s clear it’s not the same to see your players on TV than to have them working on the training ground with you. There also was a clear chemistry with Coco, who sent us a clear message, with no duplicity. His method wasn’t trial and error, on the contrary: he fully trusted what he was doing. And he found the best rhythm for players that were intelligent to manage games, that would get into scoring positions by surprise through Simeone or Franco and that made the most of playing into empty spaces for Caniggia and Batistuta, two sharp forwards with great chemistry between them and in superb form. I remember I started playing just behind them and then Leo Rodriguez settled instead. He was more of a passer and more functional to the system used by Argentina on our way to winning that Copa America undefeated.

n un emocionante torneo Sudamericano, que tuvo su clímax en una victoria sobre Brasil que desde hacía ya 14 años era esquiva, y en la definición de la clasificación por penales en el último partido ante el anfitrión, Ecuador, la Selección de Fútbol Playa logró sacar pasajes para el Mundial de Portugal 2015, que comenzará a jugar el 9 de julio. El derrotero del equipo dirigido por Gustavo Casado no fue para nada sencillo y en varios tramos del campeonato tuvo que sacar a relucir el orgullo para revertir resultados adversos. Y si de amor propio se trata, qué decir del gran triunfo ante la Verdeamarela ya sin margen de error. “Conseguimos lo que vinimos a buscar y, encima, se le ganó a Brasil: estoy muy contento”, reflejó el técnico. Pero antes de gozar, la Selección debió sufrir de lo lindo, al punto que el objetivo recién se rubricó con el penal que Marcelo Salgueiro atajó contra Ecuador. “Sabíamos que iba a ser así de difícil”, reconoció Lucas Medero, autor del gol que llevó a la Albiceleste al podio y a Portugal. ¡Vamos a la playa!

n a very exciting South American Beach Soccer Championship, which had high points in a victory over Brazil, that Argentina had to wait 14 years to get, and a penalty shoot-out in the last game against the hosts, Ecuador, the Beach Soccer National Team of Argentina qualified for the World Cup in Portugal, which will start on 9 July, 2015. Gustavo Casado’s team had a difficult road to the World Cup and they had to show their pride to revert some results that went against them. Speaking of pride, what can we say about the win over the Verdeamarela with no margin of error? “We got what we came here looking for and on top of it, we beat Brazil. I’m very happy”, said the manager. But before they were able to enjoy, Argentina had to suffer a lot, to the point in which the target was only achieve with the last kick of the tournament, a penalty kick that Marcelo Salgueiro saved against Ecuador. “We knew it was going to be this tough”, admitted Lucas Medero, who scored the goal that took Argentina to the bronze medal spot and to Portugal. n el predio de Ezeiza, de alguna manera, conviven sus dos pasiones. Agustina Barroso Basualdo está en el camarín de las musas que dirige el Vasco Olarticoechea, una vez más vestida de jugadora, lista para encarar un nuevo entrenamiento con la Selección. Y ya camino a la cancha, con el repiqueteo de los tapones contra el piso, le es inevitable mirar aunque sea de refilón las camillas que reposan en el departamento médico. Esta defensora de 21 años, tandilense, nos cuenta que la redonda la acompaña desde incluso antes de que tuviera memoria, que empezó a jugar al fútbol en el patio de su casa con su hermano Ezequiel, pero que también hay otras cosas que la movilizan en la vida: “Estoy estudiando kinesiología porque es una profesión que se relaciona mucho con el deporte y, además, te permite tener un trato constante con el paciente”. Pero para poder seguir su sueño, como tantas veces sucede, Agustina debió alejarse de sus pagos y de su familia: “Decidí mudarme a Buenos Aires cuando el club UAI Urquiza me aceptó como jugadora. Mi idea era estudiar kinesiología en Mar del Plata, porque está más cerca de Tandil, pero apenas se me dio la posibilidad de estudiar y jugar al fútbol al mismo tiempo, ni lo dudé”. Y no lo dudó porque con sólo 16 años ya deslumbró en una final de los Juegos Bonaerenses y desde entonces siente que “representar al país es lo más lindo que te puede pasar, un orgullo inmenso y una recompensa a tanto esfuerzo”. Por eso, con el ahínco que la caracteriza, avizora: “Dentro de diez años me veo con mi carrera finalizada, con mi propio consultorio y, si el físico me lo permite, jugando al fútbol”.

t the Ezeiza complex, somehow, both of her passions coexist. Agustina Barroso Basualdo is in the dressing room of the muses trained by Julio “Vasco” Olarticoechea. She is dressed as a player once again, ready to put in another training session for the National Team. On her way to the pitch, hearing the sound of her own studs, she can’t help to look, even from the corner of her eye, the stretches located in the massage area. This 21-yearold defender from Tandil, tells us that the “rounded thing” keeps her company even from before she had any recollection of those days when she started playing football in her backyard with her brother Ezequiel. But there are other things that move her: “I’m studying physiotherapy because it’s a profession that has a lot to do with sport and, besides, it allows you to have a constant contact with the patient”. In order to be able to chase her dream, however, as it’s often the case, Agustina had to leave her town and her family behind: “I decided to move to Buenos Aires when UAI Urquiza took me in as a player. My idea was to study physiotherapy in Mar del Plata, because it’s closer to Tandil, but as soon as I found out I could study and play football at the same time, I had no doubt”. She had no doubts because at the early age of 16, she had a great game at a Juegos Bonaerenses final and since then she feels that “to represent your country is the best thing that could happen to you, a great pride and a reward for all the hard work”. That is why, with her big heart, she looks into the future: “In ten years, I see my career will be over and I’ll have my own physio’s office and, if my body allows, I’ll keep playing football”.

Cursos para jueces del Interior El Consejo Federal de Fútbol realizó dos cursos para más de 300 jueces del Interior, siguiendo el plan de Desarrollo Arbitral. Bajo la supervisión de Carlos Coradina, Abel Gnecco, Juan Carlos Crespi y de la Dirección de Formación Arbitral (DFA), las sedes de San Nicolás, Gualeguaychú, Salta, La Pampa, San Juan y Santa Fe prepararon estructuras apropiadas, tanto para instructores, preparadores físicos y árbitros. Courses for referees from the provinces The Federal Football Council dictated two courses for over 300 referees from the provinces, following the Officials’ Development plan. Under the supervision of Carlos Coradina, Abel Gnecco, Juan Carlos Crespi and the Board of Referee Training (DFA), the venues of San Nicolas, Gualeguaychu, Salta, La Pampa, San Juan and Santa Fe set up appropriate structures for coaches, fitness specialists and referees.

By winning that Copa Argentina, Huracan secured another trip there for the Supercopa Argentina showdown against River Plate. And Huracan, with a goal from Chilean Edson Puch, beat Gallardo’s team 1-0. It was an emotional release for Apuzzo’s players, who were recently knocked out of the Copa Libertadores. Within days, they showed their pride to win another title only five months after lifting the Copa Argentina. Now they will want continental revenge in the upcoming Copa Sudamericana.

omingo 8 a.m., primer frío de otoño. El sol, menos mal, acompaña nuestra aventura cuando llegamos a la casa del árbitro Yael Falcón Pérez. Ahí, paradito en la puerta, ya está quien será línea del partido a jugarse horas más tarde. Pronto, a bordo del auto del mandamás de la terna, emprendemos camino hacia nuestra primera parada: la Comisaría N° 11 de Tres de Febrero. En una ajada camioneta policial nos trasladan hasta la cancha de J. J. Urquiza, donde Excursionistas recibirá a Berazategui, a las 11, por la sexta fecha del torneo de Primera C. El tramo es corto y no tiene desperdicio, sobre todo al ser testigos de las maniobras cual contorsionista que realiza el juez para encajar su metro noventa dentro del vehículo. Igual, llegamos sin fisuras a destino. Un recinto localizado en Loma Her-
mosa, cuya imagen de fondo está compuesta por pequeñas casas humildes y grandes pastizales, nos abre sus puertas. A Falcón Pérez y a sus asistentes Diego Romero y Luis Rotman les da la bienvenida la más pura de las desolaciones. Ellos, aún trajeados, chequean el campo, y media hora antes del puntapié inicial dos de las tres autoridades salen para hacer el calentamiento. ¿Que dónde está el tercero? En el vestuario, haciéndose un festín con los DNI de los jugadores. Es ahí, pues, cuando reflexionamos acerca de la importancia del cuarto árbitro... En fin. Empieza a rodar la pelota. Al ras del césped se puede apreciar cada detalle: la queja constante de los jugadores, las protestas desde el banco, los insultos que bajan de una pequeña platea. Ningún término soez falta a la cita, pero Falcón Pérez marca el terreno y su voz se escucha en cada rincón. >>

unday 8 AM. First cold day of autumn. The sun, thankfully, comes along for our adventure when we arrive at referee Yael Falcon Perez’s home. There, standing at the door, is the man who will be a linesman a few hours later. Soon, on the main official’s car, we hit the road towards our first stop: the Police Department number 11 in Tres de Febrero. On a worn police pick-up truck, we are taken to J. J. Urquiza’s home ground, where Excursionistas will host Berazategui at 11AM, for the sixth round of the Primera C tournament. It’s a short but memorable trip, especially as we witness the several moves attempted by the referee in order to fit his 1,90m frame inside the vehicle. Nevertheless, we reach our destina-
tion unharmed. A venue located in Loma Hermosa, whose background image is formed by small humble houses and big pastures, opens its doors for us. Falcon Perez and his assistants, Diego Romero and Luis Rotman, are welcomed by the purest form of desolation. Still wearing suits, they check the playing field and half an hour before the game, two of the three officials set out to start their warm up exercises. Where’s the third man? He’s in the dressing room, having a blast with the players’ ID numbers he has to check. It is right now when we reflect about the importance of the fourth official... Anyway, the football starts rolling. Next to the pitch you can appreciate every little detail: the constant complaints by the players, the protests from the bench, the insults coming down from

El agua también juega su partido en el Ascenso, territorio de sacrificio donde a veces es complicado encontrar ducha que no arroje cubitos de hielo. “No hay muchas canchas que tengan agua caliente. Si hasta una vez nos duchamos con agua mineral”, recuerda Falcón Pérez, mientras reparte algunos souvenirs arbitrales para los niños del barrio. El tercer tiempo nos llama. La intención es hallar un lugar tranquilo para

We had to take a bath with bottled water once”, remembers Falcon Perez, while he hands out to some of the kids from the neighbourhood some referee-

Más allá del confort y la buena atención en pleno anillo del Liberti, la pasada por el camarín es fugaz. Enseguida salimos a recorrer la cancha y una silbatina baja de esas plateas que, aun medio llenar, ya triplican la

Ruben Darío Insua fue un excelso volante polifuncional (llegó hasta a jugar como líbero) surgido de la cantera de San Lorenzo, donde brilló y fue figura del regreso del equipo a Primera en 1982. En nuestro país, también descolló en Estudiantes y en Independiente, jugó en Quilmes y se llegó a calzar la celeste y blanca. Como director técnico construyó una gran carrera en Ecuador y ganó la Copa Sudamericana con el Ciclón. Ruben Dario Insua was a superb all-round midfielder (he even got to play as a sweeper) who started his career at San Lorenzo, where he shone and was a key player of the team that returned to the First Division in 1982. In our country, he also had good spells at Estudiantes and Independiente, he played for Quilmes and he also wore the blue and white national shirt. As a manager, he built a great career in Ecuador and won the Copa Sudamericana with San Lorenzo.

Additionally, there was a special action to go with every one of the stages Argentina went through during the tournament, with different commercial ads which depicted the glorious road until the final against Germany. At the end of the World Cup, the market research company Millward Brown issued a study which showed that the Taragüi commercial was one of the three most outstanding ads during Brazil 2014. The brand managed to do something the majority failed at: to place its product at the centre of the stage. The mate was the commercial’s main star and it was efficiently integrated with the images, managing to reflect national values with which the consumers feel identified with.
