Un año de Selección An Albiceleste year
E
l 2016 nos propone un sinfín de emociones y desafíos ligados a la Selección Argentina. Y allí estaremos, acompañando a los colores de nuestro país y vibrando a su paso. Se vienen cuatro dobles jornadas de Eliminatorias, con el objetivo y el sueño de participar en Rusia 2018. La apertura de temporada se dará el 24 y 29 de marzo, en Santiago de Chile frente al local y en Córdoba, ante Bolivia, respectivamente. Este último encuentro representa el regreso la Selección al Interior del país en una competencia oficial, un hecho que nos llena de satisfacción. Y ratifica la vocación de la dirigencia de la AFA, junto al apoyo del cuerpo técnico y de los integrantes del plantel, por jugar para Argentina en diferentes lugares de nuestro territorio. Hay más. En junio, la Copa América Centenario ofrece otro reto, de los que Argentina ha sabido honrar: la Selección se alzó con el título en 14 oportunidades, y quedó en el umbral de una nueva gesta en Chile 2015. Los 100 años del histórico certamen continental brindan una nueva oportunidad para buscar la anhelada vuelta olímpica. Y en agosto, los Juegos Olímpicos vuelven a estar en el calendario celeste y blanco: nuestra Selección tuvo el honor de colgarse la medalla dorada en dos ocasiones (2004 y 2008) y regresa a la competencia en Río de Janeiro con el deseo de volver a dejar a nuestro deporte en lo más alto. Además, los Juegos resultan una plataforma para darle rodaje al futuro cercano, a los futbolistas Sub 23 más destacados, que ya están penetrando o pronto se harán un lugar en la Albiceleste, absorbiendo el compromiso y la pasión de esta generación de la Selección Mayor que transmite espíritu amateur y que nos ha llevado a dos finales en dos años. El 2016 es, a todas luces, un año de Selección. Y desde estas líneas, toda la familia del fútbol invita a apoyarla.

T
he year 2016 presents us with an endless road of emotions and challenges related to the National Team. And we will be there, together with our country’s colours and enjoying every step of the way. We have four double dates for World Cup Qualifiers, with the goal and dream of being in Russia 2018. The start of the season will be on 24 and 29 March, in Chile and in Córdoba, against Bolivia, respectively. The latter represents the return of the National Team to the provinces for an official competition, something that fills us with pride. And this consolidates the AFA board’s mission, together with the support of the coaching staff and the squad members, to play for Argentina in different places within our country.
There’s more. In June, the centenary Copa América offers another challenge of those which Argentina have known how to honour: our National Team won that title 14 times, and knocked the doors once more in Chile 2015. The 100 years of this historical continental competition offer a new opportunity to go for the long-awaited lap of honour. In August, the Olympic Games are back in the Albiceleste calendar: our National Team had the honour of winning the gold medal on two occasions (2004 and 2008) and are back in the competition in Rio de Janeiro with the desire of putting our sport at the top. Besides, this competition becomes a platform to breed our future stars, the best U23 prospects, which are starting, or will soon, break into the full National Team, following on the commitment and passion of the current crop of full internationals, which transmit the amateur spirit that helped them to reach important finals in consecutive years. The year 2016 is, without a doubt, a year for the Albiceleste. From these lines, the whole football family invites you to support it.

Lionel Messi ya había sido laureado por la LFP como delantero top de la temporada pasada y volvía a subir al escenario para alzarse con el premio mayor, el de mejor jugador. Allí, acunando el trofeo entre sus manos, con cierta picardía en su mirada, se animó a relatar una intimidad como rara vez lo hace... “Se lo dedico a mi hijo Thiago, que cuando me voy de casa se enoja y me dice: ‘Papá, ¿otra vez al gol te vas?’”. La risotada colectiva que despertó la tierna anécdota

Lionel Messi had already been chosen by the LFP as the best forward from the previous season and had to return to the stage to receive the most important award: best player in La Liga. There, with the trophy in his hands and a cheeky look, felt like sharing an intimate moment with the audience. Alguna vez los ojos de Lionel fueron los de Thiago, los de cualquier purrete, los que ven todo inmenso, lejano. “Es más de lo que soñaba cuando era chiquito”, fueron algunas de las primeras palabras que soltó el astro del fútbol mientras acariciaba su quinta pelota dorada, la que conquistó con el 41,3% de los votos, seguido por su habitual contrincante Cristiano Ronaldo (27,7%) y por su compinche Neymar (7,8%). Este nuevo Balón de Oro no es más que la obvia consecuencia del espectacular 2015 que tuvo, no había resquicio para la duda o el desacuerdo en su consagración. Leo redondeó un año magnífico. Y pese a que de Messi ya nada sorprende, es llamativo que haya logrado mantenerse tanto tiempo en la cima. Durante nueve años consecutivos integró la terna que aspiró a levantar el premio en Zurich, y en cinco ocasiones lo ganó. Es increíble cómo logró evolucionar su juego, renovar su competitividad, reciclar su mentalidad ganadora, de manera tal que los nuevos cracks tampoco pudieron llegar a su status. Porque ayer fueron Xavi, Iniesta o Cristiano Ronaldo, y hoy lo “padecen” fueras de serie como Neymar y Suárez. Ojalá que este 2016 lo encuentre tan pleno como siempre en el Barcelona y en la Selección.
This new Ballon D’Or is nothing but the obvious consequence of the spectacular 2015 he’s had. There wasn’t any shadow of doubt or place for disagreement in his recognition. Leo rounded a magnificent year. And despite nothing can surprise us from Messi, it’s striking that he has managed to stay at the very top for so long. During nine consecutive years he was part of the final three who aspire to win the award in Zurich and won it in five occasions. It’s incredible how he made his game evolve, how he renewed his competitiveness, how he recycled his winning mentality, in a way that prevented the new stars to reach quite his status. Because yesterday it was Xavi, Iniesta or Cristiano Ronaldo and today he makes world-class Neymar and Suárez “suffer”. I hope this 2016 finds him as good as always for Barcelona and for Argentina.

Y eso es una cosa que no puedo pasar por alto al hablar de Leo, porque es digno de elogio: puedes tener un año bueno, o dos, pero llevar el tiempo que lleva demuestra un carácter ganador inusual, propio de alguien al que no sólo le gusta lo que hace, sino que es un perfeccionista, que no tiene nunca suficiente, que si mete dos, quiere tres. No volveremos a ver nada parecido. Desde que lo conozco no ha dejado de evolucionar en ningún sentido y no parece tener fin. Gracias, Leo, por jugar como juegas, por tus desmarques, tus goles, tus pases y tus regates, por lo que le has dado al Barsa y al fútbol. Y por ser como eres. Felicidades por otro Balón de Oro. That is something I can’t overlook when speaking of Leo, because it’s worthy of praise: you can have a good year, or two, but to be doing it for as long as he has, shows an unusual winning mentality, typical of someone who not only likes what he does but is also a perfectionist. Somebody who is never pleased. Someone who scores two but wants to score three. We will never see something like this again. Ever since I’ve met him, he hasn’t stopped evolving in any sense and it seems he won’t ever stop. Thank you, Leo, for playing like you do, for finding free spaces, for your goals, your passes and your dribbling skills, for what you have given to Barça and to football. El día en que salimos desde la Argentina con un bagaje de sueños e ilusiones pero también con muchos miedos, Lionel parecía disfrutar de ese viaje. Seguramente, en su cabeza sólo giraba la idea de conocer, llegar y quedarse en Barcelona. Pero supongo que también comenzaba a forjarse la idea de triunfar en lo que más quería: el fútbol. Hoy se encuentra donde nunca soñamos que podría llegar, un lugar mágico que empezó a recorrer en 2007 consecutivamente año tras año, y donde el mundo del fútbol decidió reconocerlo cinco veces como el mejor jugador del planeta. Desde el seno familiar nos sentimos muy orgullosos de él porque todo lo consiguió con un enorme esfuerzo, dejando atrás cosas de muchísimo valor. El espíritu y la capacidad de superación de Lionel, así como sus ganas de mejorar cada día, suponen un estímulo de mucho valor para todos los que estamos cerca suyo.

I’m sure in his head, the only thing was to arrive, know the city and stay in Barcelona. But I guess he was also thinking in making it in what he loved the most: football. Today he is in a place we never dreamt he could reach, a magical place he first arrived at in 2007 and year after year since, where the world of football decided to recognize him five times as the best player on the planet. From within the family we feel very proud of him because all the things he achieved, he achieved with a huge effort, and leaving valuable things behind. Lionel’s spirit and ability to better himself are a very valuable incentive for those who are close to him. Del maratón de 90 minutos en los 3.650 metros de altura de La Paz, en aquel 1-1 ante Bolivia de marzo de 2013 por Eliminatorias, hasta la vaselina definitoria en la final de los Juegos Olímpicos 2008 contra Nigeria, pasando por el toque a la red frente a Suiza para sacar ticket a los cuartos de final del Mundial de Brasil, abundan las imágenes dignas de compilado de YouTube de Ángel Di María en la Selección. Jugador infaltable, hombre de campo con más partidos jugados (13) vestido de albiceleste en 2015, el ahora volante del Paris Saint Germain charló con AFA Revista en el inicio de un año cargado para el equipo que dirige Gerardo Martino. “Primero vienen las Eliminatorias, y serán dos partidos muy complicados. Por suerte, el triunfo que sacamos en Colombia fue importante, dio ese empuje y esa tranquilidad de poder decir ‘ya sacamos los primeros tres puntos’. Ahora debemos seguir sumando de a tres. Things are going quite well for me. It is very important to be in good form, physically and football-wise, so every time I have to join Argentina, I can help us get more wins and, most of all, to win a title once and for all. -One of those commitments is the Olympic Games. You already won a gold medal. What do you remember from Beijing 2008?
-Uno de esos compromisos son los Juegos Olímpicos. Vos ya ganaste la medalla de Oro. ¿Qué recuerdos tenés de Beijing 2008?
-I’m very proud of winning an Olympic tournament and of having a gold medal. There are exceptions, like Mascherano, who won it twice (Athens 2004), but normally you only get to play in this competition once. Those are unique experiences for a player. And I have the best memories of Beijing. The best I’m left with is the group of people we built, the footballing quality, obviously, but the group we had was the most important thing for us to win the medal we wanted. After each match, we stayed until late celebrating and enjoying our victory. It was an spectacular month, we all got along well and we had the same goal. That was key.
-Estoy muy orgulloso de haber logrado un Juego Olímpico y de tener la medalla de Oro. Hay excepciones, como Mascherano, que la ganó dos veces, pero normalmente podés jugar una sola vez esta competencia. Son cosas únicas que a un jugador le pueden pasar. Y yo tengo los mejores recuerdos de Beijing, lo más preciado que me queda es el grupo que se formó, la calidad futbolística que había, claro, pero el grupo fue lo más importante para conseguir el objetivo de la medalla. Después de cada partido nos quedábamos hasta tarde disfrutando de las victorias. Fue un mes espectacular, todos nos llevábamos bien con todos, tirábamos para el mismo lado. Algo clave. -Un grupo cuya base se mantuvo y llegó a dos finales, la del Mundial 2014 y la de la Copa América 2015. -La imagen del Pocho (Lavezzi) tirándole agua en la cara a Sabella para que se relajara un poco mostraba lo que era el grupo que se había formado. Igual que en la Copa América después: las cosas fueron muy bien puertas adentro, y por eso se logró llegar a ambas finales. Esos dos grupos han llevado a la Selección a lo más alto. -Disfrutás, entonces, de estar en la Selección. -Mucho. En todo momento uno disfruta de estar en la Selección, de compartir cosas con los compañeros. En 2010 sufrí mucho porque las cosas no me salieron como esperaba, era muy chico también, venía del Benfica, no tenía la experiencia de haber pasado por equipos grandes como ya tengo ahora, y creo que ese plus se vio en mis actuaciones en la Selección durante el Mundial de Brasil y la última Copa América. Aquéllos fueron dos momentos muy importantes en mi vida futbolística. Haber llegado a dos finales, haber ilusionado tanto a todos los argentinos, que el país volviera a creer en la Selección era uno de los propósitos principales, y creo que lo conseguimos. La gente de Argentina es exigente, siempre quiere ganar, pero a veces se complica porque jugás contra selecciones fuertes y puede pasar que las cosas no salgan como uno quiere. Pero hemos disfrutado, hemos pasado momentos espectaculares... Los meses en el Mundial y en la Copa América fueron los más lindos que viví con la Mayor y ojalá pueda vivir muchos más.
-It was a group which core remained and reached two final matches, at the 2014 World Cup and at the Copa América 2015. -That image of Pocho (Lavezzi) throwing water to Sabella’s face so the manager could relax, kind of showed the kind of group we had. Same as in the Copa América later: things went really well behind close doors and that was why we were able to reach both finals. Those two groups have taken Argentina to the top. -You enjoy, then, being in the National Team. -A lot. In every moment I enjoy being part of the National Team, I enjoy sharing things with my teammates. In 2010 I suffered a lot because things didn’t go my way as I expected, I was very young too, I was coming from Benfica, I didn’t have the experience of playing for bigger teams like I do now and I think that improvement was seen in my performances during the Brazil World Cup and the last Copa América. Those were two very important moments in my footballing life. To have reached two finals, to have gotten our compatriots so excited, to see the country believe in the National Team once again, was one of the main objectives and I think we did it. People in Argentina are demanding, they always want to win, but sometimes it gets difficult because you play against strong teams and it could be that things don’t happen the way one wants them. But we have enjoyed, we have lived spectacular moments... The World Cup month and in the Copa América, I lived the most beautiful moments with the National team and I hope I can live many more.

Many say here was when the footballing rivalry between Argentina and Brazil grew stronger. Both sides reached the final round of Copa America undefeated: the Albiceleste with four wins, the Verdeamarela with three wins and a draw. It was a suffocating summer, the Monumental looked full and temperature rose even more when a kick from Jair, a Brazilian winger, took José Salomón, a Racing Club defender and a sort of chief for the national team, out of the game. Finally, a double from the unforgettable Tucho Méndez gave the team managed by Guillermo Stábile, a 2-0 win, to defend the title won in 1945 and to set the tone for a unique triple crown in the history of Copa América. The one gem in the middle of the triple crown, the title of 1946, turned 70 years old on 10 February, 2016.

Atlético. Seven years later, aged 11, he traveled with Atlético Rafaela to play a tournament in Paraná. That was the first contact between Facundo and Boca Juniors: “I was invited to see the club and train with them. By the end of 2013 we won a tournament in Córdoba and the next year, in February, I decided to move to Boca’s facilities and live in Buenos Aires”. The connection between Colidio and the team from La Ribera, couldn’t have been any better. In his first season, he won the league with the Novena (youngest age rank in the Youth Teams), and in the second, he repeated with the Octava, where he also was the

res veces mundialista, Julio Olarticoechea es dueño de un registro particular: sin participación sobre el césped de España 82, estuvo luego en 12 de los 14 partidos que la Selección de Carlos Bilardo disputó entre el título de México 86 y el subcampeonato en Italia 90. Lo curioso es que sus ausencias se dieron ante Camerún y Alemania, justamente en las únicas derrotas de la Albiceleste en dichas competencias. Jugador polifuncional, comodín tanto para la defensa como para el mediocampo, ahora en su rol de técnico el oriundo en Saladillo también cumple más de una función dentro del predio de Ezeiza: al frente de la Selección femenina hace ya más de un año, desde fines de 2015 asumió en simultáneo el reto de comandar la Sub 23 masculina de la Primera B. -¿Cómo es ser la cabeza de dos grupos completamente diferentes? -Como tengo dos hijas de edades parecidas a las chicas que dirijo, hay cuestiones de las mujeres que conozco y eso me ayuda para el trato con ellas. Tengo cuidado con el vocabulario y, lógicamente, no entro al vestuario cuando se están cambiando, pero después es fútbol, la táctica y la estrategia no cambian y la pasión es la misma. Y yo también soy el mismo. Simplemente cambio la forma de hablar. Por ejemplo, a mí me gusta hacer algunos chistes que con las chicas no corresponde. -¿Llevar un grupo de chicas es más difícil desde lo anímico? -Puede ser. Las chicas se bajonean un poco más con las derrotas y, en general, les cuesta hablar cuando surgen algunos problemitas. Pero a mí, por ejemplo, en los Juegos Panamericanos de Canadá, me tocó conducir un plantel que mostró unas ganas tremendas en la adversidad. Eso me llamó la atención. -¿Y de la Sub 23 qué te sorprendió? -Que estos chicos son muy respetuosos, de perfil bajo, y vienen a trabajar con mucha humildad. Eso es positivo para afrontar un lindo desafío: ellos saben que están viviendo un momento único y lo asumen como tal.

A multi-purpose player, an all-rounder for defensive or midfield duties, now in his role as a manager, the Saladillo-born man has more than one task at the Ezeiza training complex: he has been in charge of the Women’s national team for over a year and since late in 2015 he took over the U23 Primera B men’s team. -What is it like to have your mind in two completely different groups of people? -Since I have two daughters of a similar age to the girls I manage, there are certain aspects of women that I know and that helps me in dealing with them. I’m wary of the things I say, logically, and I don’t get into the dressing room when they are changing, but apart from that, it’s football. Tactics and strategy don’t change and the passion is the same. And I’m the same as well. I just change the way I speak. For example, I like to crack some jokes here and there and those are not to be said in front of the girls. -To lead a group of women is harder to do from an emotional point of view?
-It could be. Girls tend to feel very sad after a defeat, and in general, they are more reluctant to speak when there are some problems. But from a personal experience, for example at the PanAm Games in Canada, I was lucky to manage a group of girls who were very eager even in adversity. That grabbed my attention. -What aspects surprised you from the U23 men? -That these kids are really respectful, low profile, and they come here to work with humbleness. That’s very positive to face a nice challenge: they know they are living a unique experience and they take it as such.

l Fútbol Playa es el más novel de los deportes de la AFA y, mientras apresura sus pasos hacia la formación de una liga local, la Selección Argentina se sigue nutriendo de jugadores con experiencia en canchas de 11 o de Futsal. En este caso, presentamos a Catriel Ferreira (24) y a Leandro Marino (23), dos jóvenes valores que por primera vez pisaron la arena internacional en la Copa Sudamericana que se disputó a principio de año en Brasil.
“Me sentí bastante bien, creo que tuve una buena adaptación, aunque también soy consciente de que todavía me falta agarrarle un poco más el ritmo y las mañas a este deporte”, cuenta Ferreira, quien durante tres años defendió los colores de Acassuso en Primera B y luego anduvo por las Ligas de Rojas y de Lobos. Una historia parecida a la de Marino, su actual compinche, que tras jugar en Infantiles de Excursionistas y en Juveniles de Tigre y de Acassuso, se hizo un hueco entre los más grandes de la Quema: “En realidad, éste es mi segundo año en Playa. Empecé en marzo de 2014 y a comienzos de 2015 tuve la chance de jugar en el Argentino C, en el Club Atlético Santa Cruz: allí fui hasta que volví en septiembre y ahora el técnico (Gustavo Casado) me dio la oportunidad de disputar mi primer torneo”. La Albiceleste participó en todas las ediciones del Mundial que organiza la FIFA y obtuvo además el título sudamericano en las Eliminatorias de San Luis, en 2013. Día a día acumula prestigio continental y en el ranking internacional ocupa el décimo lugar, segunda entre los países de la Conmebol (detrás de Brasil). Por eso, Catriel y Leandro comparten un objetivo: estar en el Mundial de Bahamas 2017.

each Soccer is the youngest of the sports under the AFA umbrela and while it is taking its first steps toward the set up of a local league, the national team continues to feed from players with experience in 11-a-side or Futsal. In this case, we introduce Catriel Ferreira (24) and Leandro Marino (23), two youngsters who stepped on the international arena at the Copa Sudamericana played in Brazil at the start of the year. “I felt quite well, I think I had a good adaptation process, though I’m also aware that I still need to catch up with the sport’s rhythm and tricks”, says Ferreira, who during three years played for Acassuso in the Primera B (third tier) and then went to play in the regional leagues of Rojas and Lobos. A similar story to Mariano’s, his current buddy, who after playing youth football for Excursionistas and later for Tigre and Acassuso, found himself a place among the big boys in La Quema: “Actually, this is my second year in Beach Soccer. I started in March 2014 and at the start of 2015, I had the chance to play in the Argentino C (fifth tier) with Club Atlético San Cruz: I went there until I returned in September and now the manager (Gustavo Casado) gave me the opportunity to play in my first tournament”. The Albiceleste took place in every Beach Soccer World Cup edition organised by FIFA and won the South American Championship in the San Luis 2013 World Cup Qualifying tournament. They are more prestigious in the continent each day and are ranked in the 10th position in the world, second among Conmebol nations (only behind Brazil). That is why Catriel and Leandro share the same goal: to be at the Bahamas 2017 World Cup.

Rest in peace, Juan Jesús pérez The year 2015 ended on a sour note for Argentina football as Juan Jesús Pérez passed away on 17 December. He was vicepresident of the Youth Football Committee, a space to which he dedicated his time, effort and love for children and our beautiful sport for over 32 years.

Pero el silbato no es su única pasión. A los 13 años la música empezó a tenerlo entre sus redes, y ahora, 20 años después, Luciano disfruta de ser DJ en sus ratos libres. “La música es un hobby rentable. La amo, pero no le puedo dedicar el mismo tiempo que hace unos años. Desde que sumé el arbitraje a mi vida, el trabajo de DJ lo tomo como una actividad de recreación”.
But the whistle is not his only passion. At the age of 13, music caught him in its wide net and now, 20 years later, Luciano enjoys being a DJ in his spare time. “Music is a very profitable hobby. I love it, but I can’t dedicate it the same time I did some years ago. Since I incorporated refereeing into my life, I take my work as a DJ like a recreational activity”.

Ahí me conquistó el arbitraje”.
-¿Encontrás algún punto en común entre ambas actividades? -En mi caso puede que por lo social, ya que, tanto con una como con otra, participé de eventos para ayudar a gente sin techo ni comida. -¿Y cómo hacés para complementar los dos trabajos? -Si un domingo dirijo temprano, el sábado arranco con la música en la fiesta y la dejo preparada para toda la noche, así me voy a acostar temprano. Y si, en cambio, termino de jugar tarde, compenso las horas al final de la fiesta. Eso sí: siempre priorizo mi actividad arbitral, tratando de no volverme loco con los horarios y teniendo en cuenta mi bienestar físico. Sacrifiqué muchas cosas por el arbitraje.
uciano Castro is a Class 5 referee, meaning he can take the pitch for Women’s, Youth, Reserves or First Division football matches, but these days he is a linesman in Primera C. “I go wherever the AFA needs me”, he says and goes on telling how was it that he caught the refereeing bug: “I was working as a fitness coach at a club in General Rodríguez, where I was born and I was asked to attend a refereeing lecture at the AFA to I could take in some new knowledge about the game. That’s when refereeing conquered me”.
-Do you find any point in common between both activities? -In my case, it could be on the social side of things, because in both, I participated in events to help people with no home or food. -How do you do to complement both Jobs? -If I have to officiate in a game early on Sunday, I start the music early on Saturday and I leave it ready for the rest of the night, so I can go to bed early. If, on the contrary, I finish a game late, I compensate for the time near the end of the party. That said: I always give my refereeing career the priority, trying not to go crazy with my schedule and always thinking of my physical well-being. I sacrificed a lot of things to be a ref.

Antes que Mago fue Ciruja, apodo que se ganó cuando de joven salía del trabajo y, previo al entrenamiento, dormía un rato debajo de las viejas tribunas de madera de Ferro. Todo un presagio: el club de Caballito se convertiría en su casa. Allí, Oscar Alfredo Garré (Buenos Aires, 9/12/1956) superó los 600 partidos, siendo hasta hoy quien más veces vistió la casaca verde en Primera. Fue campeón Nacional 82 y 84, y su regularidad sobre el andarivel izquierdo lo llevó al Mundial de México 86. También tuvo un breve paréntesis en Huracán y otro en Israel antes de cerrar su carrera en el lugar que lo vio nacer. Como técnico arrancó junto a Cacho Saccardi en Oeste, en 1995, luego pasó por Lanús y emigró a Chile, donde dirigió durante cuatro años en Deportes Concepción, Huachipato y Universidad Católica. Volvió a este lado de la Cordillera para sentarse en el banco de Atlético de Rafaela, encarar más tarde otra etapa en Ferro y, por último, ser parte del proyecto que comandó las Juveniles argentinas hasta 2013. Before he was known as Mago (Magician), he was called Ciruja (Begger), a nickname he earned when he was young and used to sleep under the old Ferro tribunes after work and just before training. It was a premonition as the club from the Caballito area would end up becoming his home. It was there where Oscar Alfredo Garré (Buenos Aires, 9/12/1956) played over 600 matches for the club in the top tier, a record he keeps to these days. He won the league in the Nacional championships of 1982 and 1984 and his performances took him to the World Cup in Mexico 1986.
