Lots of LOVE
Stress is a word we all know too well, an emotion we've all felt. According to The Mental Health Burnout Report 2024, 9 in 10 adults in the UK (91%) experienced high or extreme levels of pressure or stress at some point in the past year.
But what truly is stress, and how can we harness it to maximise our success and wellbeing? Jane Ollis, medical biochemist, environmental scientist and founder of Mindspire, explains more;
Outdated Brain Programming: The Origins of Your Stress Response
Our stress response originates from ancient brain programming meant for survival. When faced with danger, our ancestors' bodies released adrenaline and cortisol, triggering the "fight-or-flight" response and increasing glucose levels for energy. This response, ideal for short-term threats, is less suited to modern stresses like work deadlines, which still activate the same physical reactions.
One Size Fits All: The Universal Stress Response
Our bodies have a single stress response, governed by the HPA axis. When perceiving a threat, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, which then stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. This increases heart rate, breathing, and glucose levels, preparing for fight or flight. Effective stress management is crucial, as the body reacts the same to both physical threats and mental stress.
The 3-Minute Rule: Why Our Stress Response Is Outdated
The human stress response was meant to last about three minutes to escape danger. Today, constant stressors activate it frequently, leading to allostatic load—chronic stress wear and tear on the body. This can damage stress response mechanisms and cause inflammation, contributing to conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety, and depression.
Stress: The Catalyst for Performance and Creativity
Stress isn't just for survival; it's essential for performance, creativity, and problem-solving. It drives us to meet deadlines, innovate, and tackle challenges, becoming a superpower that distinguishes productive stress from overwhelm. This state also fosters social connections and enhances engagement in life, highlighting its broader significance beyond survival.
Resilience Training: Building Your Stress Armour
To manage stress, strengthen your resilience by enhancing the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" system, which helps the body relax after stress. Boosting this system creates more buffer before the stress response activates. Track your progress by measuring Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Higher HRV indicates a healthier balance between the sympathetic (stress) and parasympathetic (relaxation) systems, showing better health and stress resilience.
Breathing Magic: Boosting Your HRV
Improving HRV doesn’t need costly treatments. Practices like slow-paced breathing boost the vagus nerve, vital for the parasympathetic system. This nerve controls heart rate and digestion, aiding growth, healing, and relaxation. Take deep, controlled breaths at 5-6 per minute to stimulate the vagus nerve and manage stress better. Studies show this practice improves HRV, lowers blood pressure, and enhances cardiovascular health.
Unleash the Power of Stress
Understanding stress is crucial. Take control—change one thing or adopt a new practice—to calm your amygdala, the brain’s threat detector. Small steps unlock better stress management. Managed well, stress fuels performance and well-being. Embrace techniques like slow-paced breathing to navigate challenges with ease. Stress can be your superpower—learn to wield it.

With the awareness of ultra processed foods now coming to the forefront, there is a growing awareness that not all 'healthy supplements' are as beneficial as they appear. Many supplements contain various additives such as fillers, glues, binders, preservatives, and colourants, which can impact their overall health benefits. It’s important to read between the lines of ‘ultra-processed’ supplements like liquid collagen and tablet formulations, to ensure you’re receiving what you pay for.
We’ve become pretty good at spotting unnecessary additives in our food and beauty products, but when it comes to checking how 'clean' our supplements are, do we really know what's good for us? Pharmacist and Co-Founder of INGENIOUS collagen & wellness supplements, Pupinder S. Ghatora, lists the top 5 ingredients to avoid.
1. Magnesium Stearate
Magnesium stearate is simply a ‘flow agent’ that is used to facilitate smooth processing in factory machinery and within the body. It serves no health benefits and will simply cause the supplement to pass through you without being absorbed. Brands often use it to bulk out supplements so that they can reduce the amount of the more expensive active compound. In large amounts it can even negatively affect the gut microbes in your digestive system.
2. Carrageenan
At first glance, you’d think carrageenan, AKA Sea Moss, is beneficial for health as it’s derived from seaweed. It’s often found in gummies and liquid supplements as a gelling agent, stabiliser and thickener. However, research indicates it can have adverse effects on digestion, triggering inflammation, ulceration, and elevating blood sugar levels while
exacerbating glucose intolerance. Similarly, vegetable gums like Guar and Xanthan exhibit similar properties and can also lead to digestive disturbances.
3. Titanium Dioxide
You’ll often see titanium dioxide listed on ingredient lists, also identified as E171 on labels. Worryingly, research has suggested that the ingredient may have a carcinogenic effect. Although the European Commission has banned its use as a food additive, this does not extend to the UK or US, so it’s still widely used as a white pigment and colour enhancer in supplements.
4. Talc
Talc has garnered attention recently due to concerns about contamination in industrial-grade talc, which can include impurities and even asbestos. Surprisingly, it's used as both an anti-caking agent and a tablet brightener, mostly present in tablet supplements.
5. Sweeteners and Sugars
Sorbitol, mannitol, maltitol, and sucralose are all artificial sweeteners known to cause gut issues when overconsumed. They're not limited to fizzy drinks and 'diet' snacks but are also present in gummies, drinks, and powders. Sucrose, dextrose, and glucose syrup add sweetness to gummy or liquid supplements and, as we know, increased sugar intake has been linked to obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Aspartame is another artificial sweetener found in many supplements and so called ‘diet’ food and drinks. Although some studies confirm it is safe, there are new emerging studies showing that it can have a negative impact on our body’s oxidant/antioxidant balance, which has a knock effect on many of the body’s functions.
This month’s must have gifts and accessories
Winter is certainly one of the most testing times of the year when it comes to keeping your hair healthy; The cold, dry air outside alone can leave your hair feeling brittle and lifeless, add indoor heating and lack of sunlight into the mix, and it can feel like your hair is being pulled into a moisture vacuum.
Many people look toward oils and masks to bolster their hair, but while they’re great for hydration, if not applied correctly they can often leave your hair feeling worse instead of better.
With this in mind, haircare experts at Scandinavian Biolabs have offered some key advice on how to traverse the winter months, with a specific focus on diet and how eating the right foods can do wonders for the overall health of your hair.
Your hair’s health starts from the inside out, reflecting what you put into your body. While shampoos and treatments can certainly help, real hair strength and shine come from the nutrients you consume. Superfoods are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that give your hair the nourishment it needs to grow strong, stay hydrated, and look its best. Adding these nutrientrich foods to your diet can protect your hair from damage, boost growth, and keep your scalp healthy all year round.
Sweet Potatoes are packed with betacarotene, which your body converts into vitamin A. This helps your scalp produce sebum which will naturally moisturise your hair and help to maintain hydration and avoid breakage.
Walnuts are loaded with omega-3s, biotin, and vitamin E. Together, these
nutrients help to strengthen your hair, reduce shedding, and protect it from environmental stress.
Dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach are great for protecting your hair against the winter elements. Rich in iron, vitamin C, and folate, leafy green can keep your hair healthy from the root. Iron, especially, is crucial during the colder months when thinning hair becomes more commonplace.
Pumpkin seeds are full of zinc which supports a healthy scalp and strong hair structure. A zinc deficiency can often be a leading cause behind hair thinning and shedding, so a handful of pumpkin seeds can work wonders.
Starting your day with oatmeal isn’t just good for your energy levels, it’s also great for your hair. Oats are high in silica; a nutrient that strengthens hair strands and prevents breakage.
Incorporating oranges, grapefruits, and lemons into your diet can provide vitamin C boost for your hair. This antioxidant helps protect your hair from damage and supports collagen production, making your locks shinier and healthier.
Eggs are as close as you’ll get to a perfect hair food. They’re full of protein and biotin, which are key for growth and repair, and can also add thickness and strength to your strands.
Avocados
Avocados are packed full of healthy fats, vitamin E, and biotin, that have been proven to help repair damage and support keratin production. The result? Smooth, strong, and shiny hair.

1 medium yellow onion (diced)
2 tbsp tomato paste
4 cloves garlic (minced)
½ cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes (drained and chopped)
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
¼ tsp crushed red pepper (plus more for garnish)
1/2 cup dry white wine
6 cups chicken broth
1 cup acini de pepe pasta (uncooked)
2 1/2 cups cooked shredded chicken
2/3 cup double cream
1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (plus additional for topping)

Turn the heat to medium-high and add the white wine. Use a spatula to scrape up any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. If you prefer not to use the wine you can substitute additional chicken stock. Add the broth, pasta, and cooked, shredded chicken. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook, uncovered, for 8-10 minutes, until the pasta is tender. Remove the soup from the heat and add the double cream, grated parmesan and the spinach. Stir the soup until the spinach wilts.

A super simple cheesecake flavoured with creamy white chocolate and packed with juicy raspberries that looks as good as it tastes.
Ingredients
Base
350g digestive biscuits
150g unsalted butter, melted
Cheesecake Layer:
500g full fat cream cheese
100g icing sugar
250g white chocolate
300ml double cream
1tsp vanilla extract
300g fresh raspberries
200g double cream
75g icing sugar
100g fresh raspberries
Method
Grease and line the base and sides of a 9″ Springform cake tin with baking parchment. Set aside. Place the digestive biscuits in a food processor and pulse to fine crumbs. Pour in the melted butter and pulse until all the biscuit crumbs are coated. Pour the buttery biscuit crumbs into your prepared pan and press into an even layer. Pop the tin in the fridge while you prepare the cheesecake. Break the white chocolate into chunks and pop in a heat proof bowl. Heat in the microwave in 10 second bursts, stirring in-between every burst, until fully melted. Set aside.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment (or you can use a hand mixer) whip the double cream to stiff peaks, remove from the bowl and set aside. In the same bowl you whisked the double cream, mix the cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla extract on a low speed until incorporated. Add the melted chocolate and mix until just combined. Stir the double cream through the cheesecake mix with a wooden spoon until fully incorporated. Stir the raspberries through the cheesecake mix by hand, trying to keep some whole and breaking others up. Pour the cheesecake mixture over the prepared base and smooth the top with the back of a spoon. Place in the fridge to chill overnight. Remove the cheesecake from the tin and place on a cake plate. Set aside.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment mix the double cream and icing sugar until you get soft peaks. Fill a piping bag fitted with an open star nozzle with the double cream and pipe swirls around the edge of the cheesecake.
Top with fresh raspberries and grate over a little white chocolate. Recipe by www.iheartkatiecakes.co.uk

Murder on The Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s greatest literary achievements, with a final twist that is amongst her very best. Gripping, tense and masterfully cryptic, this brand-new stage production is a deliciously thrilling ride and an ingenious murder mystery, guaranteed to keep you guessing until the end of the line.
We caught up with Michael Maloney (Hercule Poirot) and Bob Barrett (Monsieur Bouc)to talk murder, mystery and friendship.
What can audiences expect when they come to see Murder on the Orient Express on stage?
Bob: It's funny, it's exciting and it's adventurous, and it'll also make you think…..
Michael: But hopefully if we get the speed right and the pace right, people won't be able to think fast enough during the show itself. It will be a night of intrigue with a great denouement.
How would you describe your characters' relationship?
Bob: Monsieur Bouc is the man who runs the train, he's very passionate about it and his best friend is Hercule Poirot, so he's very supportive towards him. Poirot is a genius and Bouc isn't, so he's often a sounding board and there's a little bit of Sherlock-Watson in it. Sometimes Bouc pushes back and he questions thing, then at other times he just watches as Poirot weaves his magic and goes 'How extraordinary!' There is a great bond between the two of them.
Michael: There are some very interesting scenes going on around Poirot in which he just observes and I think he's quite a lonely person. In order to be on top of his game, in order to take care of his little grey cells, he has to distance or isolate himself from being too involved with people - so that he can objectively see what their characteristics are, what their behaviorisms are and what they're up to full-stop, really. But yes, he and Monsieur Bouc are old friends and in fact we've made up a bit of a backstory for them, where they fought together in the First World War and Bouc saved Poirot's life after he was invalided out to England and ended up in Torquay - as the type of Belgian refugee that Agatha Christie would have seen during her childhood there.
Michael, Poirot has been portrayed by many actors over the years. How are you making the character your own?
Michael: When you play a role, it will naturally become your own but I carry the memory of everybody that I've watched play him with me. I don't try to compete with them and I like to acknowledge what they've done. I've really enjoyed all their performances but I think David Suchet in particular has dominated the national consciousness because he did it for about 20 years on television, so when people say 'Poirot' they automatically think of his appearance, his persona and his acting of the role. To veer far away from that would not be right but because it is a stage production there is more expression involved and there is slightly more passion involved. We cannot be dependent on the television close-up, we have to project ourselves, and there is also room for losing your temper and getting exasperated, as well as being utterly charming.
What do you think makes Christie such a revered storyteller?
Bob: She's the best at what she does. If you are in the mood for a murder mystery, she takes it to another level. It's not just that she's great at the narrative, telling the story and finding the gold within it, she's also very good at painting characters. She maybe isn't a Dickens but she's not far off in terms of the characters she creates. Also, she's very good in terms of the psychology of people in extremis, so when people are pushed to the edge she's so accurate about human nature. I think that's why people keeping come back to her stories, because there is an authenticity to what she does.
What do you think makes Murder on the Orient Express a particularly compelling story?
Michael: This is one of her all-time greats. Her writing is very dependable. You have a world created for you, which you can observe from the audience and still feel non-threatened by but yet you're intrigued by the terrible goings on in other people's lives, which is the function of theatre a lot of the time anyway. The engine of the play, the plot by Agatha Christie, is a very good one.
Are there still surprises for people who know whodunnit from the novel and previous adaptations?
Michael: There are, yes. The way it's staged, there are plenty of diversions and there are enough red herrings.
Bob: Our director Lucy Bailey has done a lot of Agatha Christies and she's got a real handle on it. She pushes the stories into unexpected areas and it's thrilling. She brings in elements that maybe aren't there on the page, and I think that's exciting for an audience.
Bob, your wife Rebecca Charles is also in the show [as Grace Ohlsson]. When did you last act together?
Bob: Well, we met on a show in 1993, Cyrano de Bergerac in the West End, and then for the next seven years a lot of what we did was together. I thought 'This is great, this is going to be how it's going to be', but the last time we worked together was in 2000, so it's been quite a long time. When I was in Holby City, I tried desperately to get her on as my ex-wife but they said she was too lovely for the part.
What have been you career highlights on film and TV?
Michael: I enjoyed my little bit in Belfast with Kenneth Branagh just a couple of years ago and I enjoyed doing Henry V for Kenneth
Branagh as well, playing the Dauphin. I also enjoyed doing a TV series for Anthony Minghella called What If It's Raining on Channel 4, which was the precursor to the film Truly, Madly, Deeply, which was another enjoyable job. I'm very proud of Starlings, which was part of the Screen Two anthology series on BBC2. It was about a young lad whose biscuit factory closed down, so he becomes a butler. [Laughs] As you do.
Bob: I was in Holby City for 12 years, so that was a huge part of my life and I just loved doing it. I did an Ab Fab, which was exciting, and I really enjoyed doing Shakespeare in Love and learned a lot from that experience. They're the big stand-outs for me.
Murder on The Orient Express comes to Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 25 February – Saturday 1 March. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com/MiltonKeynes
