How to Build a Morning Routine
Building a morning routine can greatly enhance your productivity and set a positive tone for the day. It also has numerous benefits for both your physical and mental well-being. We spoke to Jane Debs from Lotus Hypnotherapy and Wellness who shares her tips on how to create the ideal morning routine.
Define Your Goals
Identify what you want to achieve - Consider aspects such as health, productivity, mindfulness, and personal development.
Think about your values and align your routine with what matters most to you.
Start with a Wake-Up Time
Choose a consistent wake-up time - Aim to wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends, to regulate your body clock.
Consider your sleep needs - Make sure you’re getting enough sleep to wake up refreshed.
Plan Your Activities
Make a list of activities you’d like to include in your morning routine, these could include:
• Hydration: Start your day by drinking a glass of water.
• Exercise: Incorporate stretching, yoga, or a workout.
• Meditation or Breathing Exercises: Spend a few minutes focusing on mindfulness.
• Healthy Breakfast: Prepare a nutritious meal to fuel your day.
• Reading or Journaling: Take time for personal growth or reflection.
• Goal Setting: Review your tasks for the day or set intentions.
Time Your Activities
Be realistic about how much time each activity will take.
• 5-10 minutes for hydration
• 15-30 minutes for exercise
• 5-10 minutes for meditation
• 20-30 minutes for breakfast
• 10-15 minutes for reading or journaling
Consider how long you want your routine to last (typically 30 minutes to 2 hours).
Limit Distractions
Avoid technology - Consider checking your phone or social media after your morning routine is complete. This helps foster a more mindful start to your day.
Organise your space to minimise distractions and create a calm environment.
Be Flexible and Adjust
Experiment with different activities, it might take time to find what works best for you. It’s okay to switch things up to keep your routine fresh and engaging.
As your life and priorities change, revisit and adjust your routine to ensure it fits with your lifestyle.
Stick with It
Consistency is key - Try to follow your routine for at least 21 days to create a habit.
Reflect on your progress - At the end of each week, reflect on what worked and what didn’t.
Incorporate Enjoyment
Include things you love, whether it’s savouring a cup of coffee or listening to your favourite music, make sure your routine is enjoyable.
A Morning Routine Could Look Something Like This:
6:00 am – Wake up
6:05 am – Drink a glass of water
6:10 am – 20 minutes of exercise
6:30 am – Shower
6:45 am – Healthy breakfast
7:00 am – 10 minutes of meditation
7:10 am – 10 minutes of journaling
7.20 am – Review daily goals
7.30 am – Start your day!
Creating a morning routine is a personal journey, so tailor it to suit your lifestyle and preferences. Enjoy the process of building and refining something that will have you going into the day with a positive productive mindset.

Putting an End to the Pursuit of Perfection
In a world that often glorifies perfectionism, the pursuit of being perfect can be a heavy burden to bear. Many of us strive for unattainable ideals, whether in our personal lives, careers, or even in our social interactions. However, the notion that we must be perfect can lead to anxiety, self-doubt, and a sense of inadequacy. It is important to remember that perfection is not only unrealistic but also unproductive. Embracing our imperfections can lead to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
The first step in letting go of perfectionism is to recognize that everyone has flaws. No one is perfect, and trying to be so only sets us up for failure. Instead of focusing on what we lack, we should celebrate our strengths and unique qualities. This shift in mindset can be liberating. It allows us to appreciate the beauty in our imperfections and to see them as part of our human experience.
Moreover, perfectionism often leads to procrastination. The fear of not achieving a perfect outcome can paralyse us, causing us to delay important tasks or decisions. By accepting that “good enough” is often sufficient, we can break free from this cycle. Taking action, even if it’s imperfect, is far better than waiting for an elusive perfection that may never come.
Learning to embrace failure is another crucial aspect of moving away from perfectionism. Failure is not the end; rather, it is a valuable teacher. Each mistake provides an opportunity for growth and learning. When we reframe our perspective on failure, we can approach challenges with curiosity instead of fear. This mindset shift can foster resilience and drive us to take risks we might otherwise avoid.
Furthermore, it’s important to cultivate self-compassion. Instead of criticising ourselves for our perceived shortcomings, we should treat ourselves with kindness and understanding. This involves recognising that our struggles are part of the shared human experience. When we practice self-compassion, we create a safe space for ourselves to be vulnerable and authentic. This, in turn, allows us to connect more deeply with others.
Another aspect to consider is the impact of social media on our perception of perfection. Platforms often showcase curated highlights of people’s lives, leading us to compare our reality with others’ illusions. It’s essential to remember that what we see online is often not the whole picture. By stepping back and critically assessing the content we consume, we can reduce feelings of inadequacy and reinforce the idea that everyone has their battles. Striving for perfection can feel like an admirable goal, but it often leads to unnecessary stress, self-doubt, and burnout. Learning to let go of perfectionism is a process that involves embracing your humanity, understanding your motivations, and developing healthier habits.
Here’s our guide to help you stop trying to be perfect and find peace with imperfection.
Understand Perfectionism
Perfectionism often stems from deep-seated fears or beliefs, such as the fear of failure, judgment, or not being good enough. By striving to be perfect, you may hope to shield yourself from criticism or disappointment. However, this mindset can create a cycle of
dissatisfaction, as perfection is an unattainable standard. Begin by recognizing that perfectionism isn’t about achieving excellence; it’s about an unrealistic need for flawlessness.
Shift Your Mindset
Redefine Success: Instead of equating success with perfection, focus on progress, learning, and effort. Success is not about being flawless but about growing and improving over time.
Embrace Imperfection: Acknowledge that imperfection is a natural part of being human. Mistakes and failures are opportunities for growth, not reflections of your worth.
Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a friend. Recognize that everyone struggles and that it’s okay to stumble.
Change Your Habits
Set Realistic Goals: Break large goals into smaller, achievable steps. This helps you focus on manageable tasks rather than overwhelming yourself with unrealistic expectations.
Prioritise: Not everything needs to be done perfectly or even completed. Identify what truly matters and devote your energy to those areas.
Limit Perfectionist Behaviours: If you find yourself overpreparing, endlessly editing, or avoiding tasks for fear of failure, set boundaries for these behaviours. For example, give yourself a time limit to complete a task and stick to it.
Seek Balance
Celebrate Your Accomplishments: Instead of dwelling on what you could have done better, take time to appreciate what you’ve achieved. Celebrate small wins as much as big ones.
Engage in Activities You Enjoy: Pursue hobbies or activities where the outcome doesn’t matter as much as the process. This can help you learn to enjoy the journey rather than fixating on results.
Surround Yourself with Supportive People: Build relationships with individuals who value you for who you are, not for what you achieve.
Focus on the Bigger Picture
Practice Gratitude: Regularly reflect on what you’re grateful for in your life. This helps shift your focus from flaws to the abundance around you.
Accept that Not Everything Is in Your Control: Life is unpredictable, and not everything will go according to plan. Let go of the need to control every outcome.
Letting go of perfectionism doesn’t mean settling for mediocrity. It means embracing a balanced, fulfilling life where you can strive for excellence without sacrificing your mental and emotional wellbeing. Remember, you are enough just as you are.

The Tricks Behind Sticking to your New Year Resolutions
It may only be early January, but for some those New Year’s Resolutions are already starting to seem like a bad idea. Whether you’ve resolved to stop drinking, head to the gym more, quit sugary drinks, or spend less time looking at a screen, by mid-Jan those lofty ambitions can start to seem harder and harder.
A 2022 study showed that a third of Brits who set New Year’s resolutions will give them up by 10th January, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Vera Powles, a biomedical scientist and founder of Mana Living (manaliving.co.uk) revealed that the key to setting sustainable goals and making habits stick in 2025.
Vera said, “A lot of us get to a new year and think we need to set a big, lofty resolution for the next twelve months, but if you do that you are only setting yourself up for failure. Instead, look to make small manageable changes to your daily routine, and your positive habits will grow from there. If you’ve never run in your life and you set a habit to run five times a week, I can almost guarantee that the change is so sudden and will take so much effort that it is only sustainable for one or two weeks, and then you will stop altogether. Remember, you don’t have to be perfect, and try not to get disheartened if you slip up, just try your best again tomorrow and give yourself a bit of self-compassion. If you get into the mindset of ‘well I have already failed so there is no point in trying again’, that is when you give up for good. It isn’t about grand gestures and big promises, small, consistent steps are the healthiest and most sustainable way to form new habits that stick.”
We share Vera’s top tips for sticking to your goals and building habits that you’ll still be doing when December 2025 rolls around:
Set SMART goals
In work setting we’re used to setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely – so give yourself the same platform for success in your endeavors. Saying you want to lose a large amount of weight in a short amount of time is not healthy or realistic and will leave you feeling like you have failed before you have even begun. Instead, focus on the steps you will take to get there and celebrate your successes along the way. Creating a specific schedule of when and how you are going to perform your new habit, making sure your goal is achievable, and that you measure your success along the way is the key to staying motivated and keeping going.
Make it as easy as possible
to succeed
There will always be something that stops you from doing your new habit, so it is important to recognise what they are and get ahead of them. Maybe you don’t go to your yoga class when it is raining – why not try an online class instead? Too tired after you get home from work to go for a run? Try leaving running shoes and a change of clothes in your car so you can head out straight after work or during lunch. It is tempting to blame a lack of motivation but is often the systems that we have in place that cause us to fail. If you want to drink more water, carry a refillable water bottle with you or fill bottles of water and leave them in the rooms you spend most time when you’re at home.
Plan
ahead
Having good intentions often isn’t enough to help us reach our goals, it’s important to plan when and how we’re going to execute our new habits so we hold ourselves accountable and not put things off. For example, if your New Year’s resolution is to start journaling, you will probably head out and buy a lovely new notebook and pen – but if you haven’t thought about when in the day you are going to make time to write, or what you are going to put down on the page, you might find it has been weeks since you picked up a pen. Instead try saying “Every night before bed I’m going to write one sentence about something that has happened today and how that made me feel”, with enough repetition that plan will turn into a habit.
Notice and celebrate small successes
If you’re only going to see success from your habit change far in the future, you’re much more likely to give up along the way –what’s the point if it’s not working right? We’re hard-wired to want to seek instant gratification, that’s why it is so hard to break ‘bad’ habits because they usually provides instant gratification, so reframe your resolution so you can measure and celebrate small victories throughout the year. Rather than resolving to “not drink alcohol ever again” (when do you celebrate that!) – instead have a resolution to cut down and not drink alcohol for one month, then mark that success with a treat, like enjoying a nice meal. Get creative with how you give yourself little rewards, for many people this can be validation from others so tell a friend or family member what your goal is so they can keep you on track.
Identify yourself with your new habit
Start to talk about yourself in a way that aligns with your new habit, and you’ll begin to think about yourself in those terms too. Adopt a new belief about yourself, for example, talk about yourself as a ‘healthy person’ or someone who ‘doesn’t eat meat’ and that will soon become your reality. This will also help you to be accountable to other people in your inner circle too, making it much less likely that you will quit.
Pair your habit with something you already do
Pairing your resolution with something that is already part of your routine will make it much easier to stick to. If, for example, you want to be more mindful in 2025 and you are in the routine of making a cup of tea each evening – try combining the two! Choose to spend the time it takes the kettle to boil silently and mindfully focusing on your thoughts and try putting on a short meditation video while you enjoy your nightly cuppa. This is often called habit stacking and the more you do it, the more your new intention will slip into your everyday life.
Track your habits
Being present and noticing when you find sticking to your resolution difficult can help you track your successes and avoid instances where you are more likely to skip a day. Try using a tracking app or download this free planning tool to keep yourself accountable for your success.

Dear Evan Hansen
Today is going to be a good day. And here’s why…..
Meet Evan: an anxious high school kid who wants nothing more than to fit in. The thing is, on his way to fitting in, he didn’t tell the whole truth. And now must give up on a life he never dreamt he’d have. As events spiral and the truth comes out, Evan faces a reckoning with himself and everyone around him.
Ryan Kopel will play the iconic role of Evan Hansen alongside Lauren Conroy (Into The Woods) as Zoe Murphy and Alice Fearn (Wicked, Come From Away) as Evan’s mum, Heidi.
They will be joined by Helen Anker (Mamma Mia!) as Cynthia Murphy, Richard Hurst (The Lion King) as Larry Murphy, Killian Thomas Lefevre (Bat Out Of Hell) as Connor Murphy, Tom Dickerson (Heathers) as Jared Kleinman, Vivian Panka (9 to 5 the Musical) as Alana Beck and Sonny Monaghan (discovered via TikTok) as alternate Evan.
This is the first production of Dear Evan Hansen in the UK to perform the show with an
ensemble. The ensemble are Lara Beth-Sas, Will Forgrave, Daniel Forrester, Jessica Lim, Sonny Monaghan and Shakira Simpson.
The casting team collaborated with TikTok during the audition process, inviting TikTok users who were interested in being cast in the production to upload a video of themselves singing any number from the show. TRAVEL
Retreat to The Cotswolds
Agetaway to the Cotswolds is the perfect way to step into the New Year. Cobwebs blown away and ready to embrace the year ahead it’s an escape that offers a picture-perfect break in an idyllic setting, filled with charming villages, quaint chocolate box cottages and beautiful countryside.
A uniquely renovated 18th century barn in the quintessentially English village of Duns Tew, Oxfordshire was to be our home for a couple of days, ready to escape and enjoy a slower pace of life before the manicness of a New Year begins.
The Barn has been lovingly renovated and brought to life by artist and creative director Kelly Jackson who has designed a space that not only maintains many of the original features, but also incorporates bold and quirky touches.
Curve stone walls, an original log burner and wooden beams retain the barn's historical character, captivating that idyllic cosy cottage feel. Whilst colour-blocking, geometric shapes, bold artwork and bright colours accessorise the large open plan kitchen and living area effortlessly. Contrasts of yellow and black further enhance the eclectic aesthetic that blends a contemporary, rustic look gracefully.
All on one level, The Barn has two beautifully designed bedrooms that embody a blend of rustic charm and modern luxury.
The main en-suite bedroom has an exposed stone wall with a carefully curated window seat to curl up and read a good book,
drink your morning coffee or just look dreamily onto the garden. With the comfiest bed, large dressing area and whitewashed walls accentuated with forest green hues. The skylight projects a light and airy space that creates your own little sanctuary and if you do need to flip your laptop on and do a little work there’s a dedicated work space, complete with desk, quirky artwork and a ‘lilac’ hippo lamp to make you smile.
The other bedroom is a haven of green hues, soaked with natural light that elevates the room through its large skylight, lime green side tables, chequered cushions and cosy throws – the whole look is a soothing colour palette that leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed all in one go.
And it doesn’t end there, step outside into your own little sanctuary. The south-facing garden has everything you need. Whether it’s a winter BBQ whilst snuggling under blankets on the outside lounge set, sipping hot chocolate as you sit in a deckchair looking up at the stars or enjoying an alfresco meal around the spacious wooden dining table, the choice is yours. Surrounded by trees and bushes privacy isn’t an issue it is just another design element of this rural retreat that has you wanting to escape to time and time again.
This unique property is the perfect base for exploring charming Cotswold villages, vibrant markets, scenic walking trails and traditional country pubs. From the picturesque streets of Bourton-on-the-Water to the historic sites of Cirencester, there’s something to tempt you around every corner. Or if all you want to do is curl up in front of the log fire, all cosy and warm and just relax in a tranquil bubble then there’s no better choice than this lovingly restored barn.
It’s clear that every inch of this rural properties renovation has been meticulously thought out, resulting in the most enchanting countryside retreat that you have to visit at least once.
