Stress Secrets: What You Never Knew

Stress. It’s a word we all know and a feeling we all experience, but do we truly understand it? While often viewed as the enemy, stress is a powerful force that has shaped human evolution. However, our modern lives have complicated its role, making it crucial to understand how stress works and how we can manage it effectively.

Outdated Brain Programming: The Origins of Your Stress Response

Our stress response originates from ancient brain programming meant for survival. When faced with danger, our ancestors' bodies released adrenaline and cortisol, triggering the "fight-or-flight" response and increasing glucose levels for energy. This response, ideal for short-term threats, is less suited to modern stresses like work deadlines, which still activate the same physical reactions.

One Size Fits All: The Universal Stress Response

Our bodies have a single stress response, governed by the HPA axis. When perceiving a threat, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary gland, which then stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol and adrenaline. This increases heart rate, breathing, and glucose levels, preparing for fight or flight. Effective stress management is crucial, as the body reacts the same to both physical threats and mental stress.

The 3-Minute Rule: Why Our Stress Response Is Outdated

The human stress response was meant to last about three minutes to escape danger. Today, constant stressors activate it frequently, leading to allostatic load—chronic stress wear and tear on the body. This can damage stress response mechanisms and cause inflammation, contributing to conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, anxiety, and depression.

Stress: The Catalyst for Performance and Creativity

Stress isn't just for survival; it's essential for performance, creativity, and problem-solving. It drives us to meet deadlines, innovate, and tackle challenges, becoming a superpower that distinguishes productive stress from overwhelm. This state also fosters social connections and enhances engagement in life, highlighting its broader significance beyond survival.

Resilience Training: Building Your Stress Armour

To manage stress, strengthen your resilience by enhancing the parasympathetic nervous system, the "rest and digest" system, which helps the body relax after stress. Boosting this system creates more buffer before the stress response activates. Track your progress by measuring Heart Rate Variability (HRV). Higher HRV indicates a healthier balance between the sympathetic (stress) and parasympathetic (relaxation) systems, showing better health and stress resilience.

Breathing Magic: Boosting Your HRV

Improving HRV doesn’t need costly treatments. Practices like slow-paced breathing boost the vagus nerve, vital for the parasympathetic system. This nerve controls heart rate and digestion, aiding growth, healing, and relaxation. Take deep, controlled breaths at 5-6 per minute to stimulate the vagus nerve and manage stress better. Studies show this practice improves HRV, lowers blood pressure, and enhances cardiovascular health.

Conclusion: Unleash the Power of Stress

Understanding stress is crucial. Take control—change one thing or adopt a new practice—to calm your amygdala, the brain’s threat detector. Small steps unlock better stress management. Managed well, stress fuels performance and well-being. Embrace techniques like slow-paced breathing to navigate challenges with ease. Stress can be your superpower—learn to wield it.

Top Tips for Happiness

Happiness is a universal goal, yet achieving it can seem elusive in a world filled with stress, responsibilities, and challenges. The good news is that happiness isn’t a fixed state—it can be cultivated through conscious choices and habits. Here are some top tips, backed by research and real-life wisdom, to help you lead a happier life:

Practice Gratitude Daily

Gratitude is one of the most powerful tools for enhancing happiness. Research shows that when you focus on what you’re thankful for, it shifts your mindset from what's lacking to what’s abundant in your life. Keeping a gratitude journal, where you write down three things you're grateful for every day, can increase positive emotions and satisfaction over time.

Prioritise Relationships

Human connection is key to happiness. Whether it’s family, friends, or community, having meaningful relationships boosts well-being and provides emotional support during tough times. Make time for your loved ones, invest in those relationships, and nurture social ties.

Engage in Acts of Kindness

Altruism and kindness have a direct link to happiness. When you help others, it fosters a sense of purpose, connection, and empathy. Simple acts like helping a neighbour, volunteering, or even complimenting a stranger can elevate your mood and make the world a little brighter.

Mindfulness and Meditation

Mindfulness is about being present in the moment, fully aware of your thoughts, feelings, and surroundings. It helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms by anchoring your mind in the present. Meditation, particularly mindfulness meditation, is a proven technique to calm the mind and enhance happiness by creating a sense of peace and clarity.

Stay Active

Physical activity doesn’t just benefit the body; it significantly impacts mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals that improve your mood and help you feel more relaxed. Whether it’s yoga, running, dancing, or just walking, staying active can boost your happiness levels and improve your overall well-being.

Develop a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset, the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed can lead to greater happiness. People with a growth mindset are more resilient in the face of challenges, and they see failures as opportunities to learn and grow. This perspective reduces anxiety and fear of failure, making life’s ups and downs easier to navigate.

Simplify Your Life

Sometimes, we overcomplicate things with too many commitments, possessions, or ambitions. Simplifying your life can help reduce stress and create more space for joy. This might mean decluttering your home, learning to say no, or cutting back on obligations that don’t bring you happiness.

Cultivate Optimism

Optimism is a key component of happiness. Optimists tend to handle

challenges better and recover from setbacks more quickly. While some people are naturally more optimistic, it’s a trait that can be cultivated. Reframing negative situations, focusing on solutions rather than problems, and envisioning positive outcomes can help foster a more optimistic outlook.

Embrace Nature

Spending time in nature has a soothing effect on the mind. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the mountains, or simply sitting in your backyard, being outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and boost creativity. The fresh air and natural beauty can help clear your mind and ground you in the present moment.

Set Meaningful Goals

Goals give life direction and purpose. However, it’s important to set goals that align with your values and passions, rather than ones based solely on external expectations. When you’re working towards something meaningful to you, it creates a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

Limit Social Media Use

While social media can be a great way to connect, excessive use can lead to feelings of envy, loneliness, and dissatisfaction. The constant comparison to others' highlight reels can skew your perception of reality. Limiting your time on social media or taking regular digital detoxes can significantly improve your mood and reduce stress.

Sleep Well

Sleep is a foundational pillar of happiness and mental health. Poor sleep can lead to irritability, stress, and a decline in cognitive function. On the other hand, quality sleep helps regulate mood, improve focus, and boost energy levels.

Pursue Hobbies and Passions

Engaging in activities that bring you joy and allow you to express yourself is essential for happiness. Whether it's painting, writing, gardening, playing music, or cooking, these activities provide a sense of accomplishment and flow, which is a state of deep, fulfilling engagement.

Practice Self-Compassion

Being kind to yourself, especially in difficult times, is crucial for emotional well-being. Instead of being your own harshest critic, practice self-compassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer to a friend. This helps reduce feelings of inadequacy and boosts resilience.

Find Balance

Finally, happiness often comes from balance—between work and play, solitude and socializing, giving and receiving. Striking this balance can help you lead a more fulfilling and harmonious life.

Conclusion

Happiness is not a destination but a journey, and it’s deeply personal. Remember, happiness often lies in the simple, everyday choices we make.

Autumn Skincare Dos and Don’ts

As Autumn sets in, it is essential to protect and nourish your skin getting it ready and protecting it for the colder weather.

Experts at beauty and wellness marketplace Fresha (www.fresha.com) have provided beauty enthusiasts with their top tips for maintaining healthy skin during the autumn months.

Remember, SPF is not just for summer

Perhaps the most important tip on the list, SPF should be incorporated into your daily skincare routine whaterver the season. Despite the lack of visible sunshine and warmth, the UV rays from the sun can seep through clouds and age and damage your skin. It is recommended to apply a high SPF, such as SPF 30 or 50, after you cleanse but before you moisturise to fully protect your skin; even SPF 15 is too low in the autumn/winter season.

Opt for gentle cleansing for a healthy barrier

During autumn, our skin can become more susceptible to dryness and sensitivity, so it’s crucial to use gentle, non-harsh products to maintain a healthy skin barrier. It is recommended to use creamy cleansers instead of foaming ones, as well as washing your face with lukewarm water instead of hot water. Implementing these small changes will ensure that your skin’s natural oils are not being stripped away and that your skin barrier is protected to retain moisture.

Don’t forget to protect your hands and lips

It’s not just your face that needs protecting, as the skin on your hands and lips is thinner and more vulnerable to dryness – hence why we lick our lips and suffer from ‘lick eczema’. To prevent this, applying a good quality lip balm and a rich layer of hand cream in between hand washing, going outside, eating, and drinking is necessary. Taking these steps will shield your hands and lips from chapping, cracking and becoming sore during the harsh temperatures.

Try a vitamin C serum

Introducing vitamin C to your skincare routine can hydrate and brighten your skin, as well as reduce hyperpigmentation and promote the

production of collagen. However, it’s incredibly important to gradually introduce vitamin C to your routine, as it may not be suitable for your skin type. Some vitamin C products may have high concentration, so it could cause minor skin irritation, and in these cases, should be dropped from your routine immediately. Therefore, do a patch test to assess your skin’s reaction by applying a small amount of serum or oil to the back of your hand. If you develop any redness or rashes, then this product is not suitable for your skin.

If your skin reacts well to the vitamin C serum, then this product can heal blemishes and can provide UV protection, but it must be used as well as SPF as opposed to replacing it. Not to mention, it gives your skin an incredible glow during the dull winter months.

Maintain hydration from the inside out

The harshness of the colder air can be seriously drying to your skin, so using a daily hydrating moisturiser twice a day is a must to lock in moisture and prevent a dry, flaky face. This moisture should then be sealed with a facial oil, such as argan or jojoba, to fully reap the benefits.

Hydration should also be prioritised from the inside out, so ensure that you’re drinking plenty of water and eating water-rich foods, such as fresh fruits like oranges, vegetables like cucumbers, as well as broths and soups.

Don’t overload your skin with new products

It is important to bear in mind that the change in temperature does not require a complete change in your usual skincare routine. Overloading the skin with too many products, especially new ones, can exacerbate or evoke skincare issues. It is recommended to trial new products and carefully monitor how your skin responds to them on a day-by-day basis. As well as this, trying one product at time allows you to see the true results with no other factors affecting them, rather than using too many at once and trying to figure out which one isn’t working for you. Taking these steps will ensure that your skincare routine is suitable for your needs, particularly ias the weather gets colder.

Sweet Potato & Sausage Lasagne

A simple way to jazz up your regular lasagne, a delightful meal, full of delicious flavours for an autumn supper

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil

1 cup diced yellow onion

3 cloves garlic, minced

1lb Italian sausage

1 24oz Jar of marinara

2 cups chopped fresh kale

16oz ricotta

1 large egg

3/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan, divided

1 tsp dried oregano

4 large Sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8"-thick

1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella

1 8oz ball of burrata

Fresh parsley, for garnish

Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Preheat oven to 375 degrees and spray a 9"x-13" baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil and add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the sausage to the skillet and cook, breaking up with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Pour in the marinara and bring the sauce to a simmer. Cook until sauce thickens slightly, 5 minutes. Add in the kale and cook until wilted, remove the skillet from the heat.

In a large mixing bowl, combine ricotta, egg, ½ cup Parmesan, and oregano. Season with salt and pepper. Next, spread a thin layer of marinara mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Layer a third of the sweet potatoes on top of the sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread about a third of the ricotta mixture over the sweet potatoes and top with a third of the remaining meat sauce. Repeat to make 2 more layers. Top with mozzarella, burrata, and remaining ¼ cup Parmesan. Spray some foil with non-stick cooking spray to prevent the cheese from sticking to the top. Cover the dish with foil and bake until sweet potatoes are almost cooked through, about 45 minutes, then remove foil and bake until sweet potatoes are fork-tender and cheese is golden, 15 minutes more. Let the lasagne rest 10 minutes. Garnish with parsley before serving!

3 eggs

150g light brown sugar

100ml oil

Pre-heat the oven - 190°C, Fan 170°C, 375°F, Gas 5. Rub some butter around the inside of a 20cm/8” deep round cake tin or insert a baking liner. Measure the flour, baking powder, cinnamon and cloves into a bowl, blend together and sieve into another bowl. Break the eggs into a mixing bowl, add the sugar, oil and beat together. A Little Razzle-Dazzle

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today's tabloids.

Created by the musical theatre talents of John Kander, Fred Ebb and legendary choreographer Bob Fosse, Chicago’s sexy, sassy score includes the show-stopping songs “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, and “All That Jazz”. Winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy, Chicago is the longest running American musical in Broadway and West End history.

Since it opened in New York in 1996, Chicago has played in 38 countries worldwide, and been performed in English, Dutch, German, Swedish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Italian, French, Danish, Japanese and Korean. Canaves Oia, Santorini

The Ancient Art of Greek Winemaking

It’s time to discover the ancient art of Greek winemaking with Canaves Collection, set amidst historic wine caves in Santorini, one of the world’s oldest wine producing regions.

Beyond its breath-taking ocean landscapes and sunsets, Santorini has emerged as a burgeoning wine region, captivating connoisseurs from around the world with its unique charm and terrain. The island's volcanic origins, forged in a dramatic eruption around 1600 B.C., have provided its soil with a rich composition ideal for grape cultivation.

Recognising the potential of volcanic caves formed in Oia, the Chaidemenos family transformed them into a sanctuary for generations of vintage wines, followed by pioneering hospitality on the island in 1985 by converting these caves into chic hotel rooms, a vision that ultimately blossomed into the Canaves Collection.

Today, this collection encompasses five exquisite properties scattered across Santorini, each embodying its own distinct personality that connects to authentic Greek character, charm and

soul. At the heart of this legacy lies a profound philosophy – a deep respect for the art of winemaking and a dedication to sharing the island's rich vinicultural heritage with enlightening wine tastings with their trained sommeliers.

Guests are invited to uncover new palates of fine Santorinian grape varieties, including Assyrtiko, Aidani, Athiri, Mavrotragano and Mantilaria, and learn about the unique way in which wine is grown on the island - known as “kouloura” - a traditional method of training vines to form circular, low lying baskets on the ground so grapes are protected from strong winds and hot sun.

Off property, the Canaves Collection team is also happy to arrange tours at local wineries including favourites, Domaine Sigalas and Estate Argyros for a fully immersive experience.

Grace La Margna St Moritz Where Conservation Meets Innovation

Last year, following an extensive transformation, landmark hotel La Margna reopened its doors under a new name. Grace La Margna St Moritz has brought a breath of fresh Swiss air into the iconic alpine destination of St Moritz and is the first hotel opening in more than 50 years. Long-awaited, the birthplace of winter tourism now has a chic new entry to house high society, 365 days a year.

Originally built in 1906 in the classic Art Nouveau style, a modern extension – aptly named the Grace Wing - has been added, all led by London architectural firm Divercity Architects.

With additional rooms, featuring full-height windows overlooking Lake St Moritz, and state of the art spa, every detail has been sympathetically considered, nodding to La Margna’s rich history whilst also looking ahead to the future.

The juxtaposition of old and new is visible throughout. Original features such as Nicolaus Hartmann’s 1906 granite pillars, wooden panelling and ornate plasterwork in the 74-room property all complement contemporary comforts and undeniable luxury. This meticulous preservation effort was crucial to maintain the historical character and architectural integrity of the building.

The brave and bold introduction of some architectural ‘catalyst’ moments spark an element of surprise and add to the timeless and sophisticated feel of the hotel, and nothing says this more than the hotel’s bar, N/5 – which defines modern luxury and is undoubtably the beating heart of the property.

Guests will be immersed in the culinary delights of Executive Chef Andrea Bonini, at one of his on-site restaurants. All-day Mediterranean dining restaurant The View celebrates different flavours from around the culinary heart of Europe. Inspired by sharing food culture and local ingredients, guests can choose from a selection of incredible dishes, whilst admiring the view over the lake and mountain peaks.

MaxMoritz is the place-to-be for fondue lovers. This cosy restaurant opens its doors exclusively in winter and offers an inviting atmosphere that is perfect for warming up on cold days. In addition to classic fondue variations, MaxMoritz treats its guests to a selection of regional specialities that reflect the charm of the

mountains. Outside the winter season, MaxMoritz can be hired for private events, making it an ideal venue for unforgettable celebrations and special occasions.

Beefbar - The globally renowned luxury dining concept, Beefbar prepares to open its first Swiss outpost on 1 December, ready to welcome cosmopolitan guests to sample and savour some of Riccardo Giraudi tastiest dishes. Born in Monte-Carlo in 2005, Beefbar breaks with the rigid, traditional codes of steakhouses, through its glamorous lines, clear-cut personality and a 360 degrees experience. Fit with private dining, live DJ and vista views, Beefbar is the hottest new ticket in town.

Ikon Ski Pas - For winter 2024 and 2025, St. Moritz will be accessible on both the Ikon Pass and the Ikon Base, joining Zermatt as the pass’s second ski resort in the Swiss Alps. Ikon Pass holders will get seven unrestricted days with no blackout dates to use between the nine ski areas that comprise St. Moritz; Ikon Base pass holders will get five days, also blackout-free and unrestricted.

For a touch of home, guests can unwind in the Living Room. An open fireplace, Mariage Frères' exclusive tea variations and sweet treats

from the resident pastry chef reinforce the intuitive service and modern luxury hospitality.

The wellness centre honours the luscious valley that it sits within, with transformative treatments that guide the mind, body and soul in a state of equilibrium. A 20-metre-long swimming pool with counter-current system sits alongside the Finnish sauna and steam bath as well as multiple wellness showers.

Ski and bike rental is also available on site, as is the state-of-the-art fitness area. True to the motto Grace/365, a full programme of active adventures set in nature and inspiring cultural experiences provide an insight into the Engadin way of life including hiking, biking, surfing, cross country skiing or alpine skiing.

Sophistication and Wellness at W London

Sophisticated and quirky, glamorous and decadent, and centrally located in the heart of Leicester Square is the W London Hotel, offering luxury and style just steps away from theatreland, the catwalks of Brewer Street and Soho’s electric nightlife. The hotel - like the city itself - is a bold contrast of themes, colours, textures and characters, making it perfect for our recent trip to London.

A large freestanding lit up W is the only indication you have arrived at your destination, as you walk through the dark glass doors into a jetblack lobby, with glass ball chandeliers and sparkly lifts to take you up to the reception area on the first floor.

The lift doors open to a view of disco balls hanging from the ceiling (a reminder of the nightclub history that once dominated Leicester Square). Mirrored reception desks stand on a shiny black floor with neon purple lights, abstract artwork on the walls and a floor to ceiling bookcase filled with plates that depict business men in different stages of business to going out attire. The hotel is a bold contrast of themes, colours, textures and styles.

Check in was faultless and within minutes we were closing the lift doors on the impressive disco balls and heading to our room for a stay full of relaxation, serenity and mindfulness.

Our stay was focused around the ‘Intentions Stay’ curated by wellness and psychology expert Roxie Nafousi. The room itself was a blend of calm and tranquillity with thoughtful products selected by Roxie including a reed diffuser with the most gorgeous tranquillity scent, mantra cards, a manifesting deck, body oil and a journal, all for you to use to elevate your holistic well-being and self-care.

The beds were adorned with soft white linen, perfect for lying back and doing absolutely nothing, except ensuring lights are dimmed, curtains drawn, soft music plays and room service is ordered, all without leaving the bed via the hi-tech iPad, that with one touch controls nearly everything.

A serene, reset stay wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the hotel’s AWAY Spa. An ambient space of sensory delights and tranquil relaxation. As you enter, the smell is divine, the plush sofas are calling for you to just curl up and do absolutely nothing. A refreshing glass of ginger juice sets you up ready to step into the sauna and steam rooms and revitalise your senses before entering one of the serene treatment rooms for a blissfully relaxing treatment.

I opted for a massage that was all it promised and more. Using light pressure (my preference) this massage is designed to lower brain waves, promote the release of toxins, improve sleep and help gently

ease muscle tension, it certainly did all of this and more. The soft gentle strokes had me drifting into a tranquil state of bliss, allowing myself to float into a feeling of calm as the relaxing music entered my subconscious mind effortlessly, leaving me floating gently on a cloud as I left the spa and headed back to my room to get familiar with my own personal butler (the iPad) and decide what delicious delights I was going to order to the room.

The food here is a foodie’s delight. The main menu is infused with Asian influences as well as a unique food and drink menu curated especially for the Intentions Stay. The Perception Bar has collaborated with DIRTEA to compile a selection of hot drinks, smoothies and Mantra mocktails that are mood boosting, imaginative and energising. We opted for a Turmeric Latte and Rejuvenate Smoothie as well as a Trust Your Intuition Mocktail, all refreshing and perfect additions to our in-room dining experience.

The food choices reflect the wellness theme flawlessly, with dishes such as Ramen Noodles, Avocado Tacos and Protein Bites to tempt the tastebuds, but the star of the show has to be the Charcoal Burger, a classic beef burger, with cheese, bacon, lettuce and tomato in a charcoal bun served with sweet potatoes fries. Despite looking massive, the burger didn’t bloat or make you feel heavy it was devouring delicious, light and flavoursome.

Food and drink well and truly consumed we headed out to China Town to soak up the evening’s atmosphere. It’s hard to believe that this relaxing stay is right in the heart of Leicester Square. Whether it’s because our room is so high up, or the window panes are so thick, I don’t know, but none of the noise reaches us until we step outside and walk out of the hotel’s entrance.

The best way to end the evening is a nightcap in The Perception Bar, with its bold contemporary design, curvy lounging corners, glamorous mirrors and neon signs it’s a glamourous space to sip cocktails and just enjoy the vibes of London night life.

Next morning breakfast was another delight, made to order and brought fresh to our table. Fresh fruit, soft pastries and Eggs Royale were our choices and a great way to start the day. Nothing is too much trouble, the service and attention to detail is still as exceptional in the restaurant as it is throughout the hotel.

Whether it’s for shopping, sightseeing, a show, meal or just catching up with friends, W London is the perfect glamorous base to stay at whilst you explore London, and the vibrancy surrounding it.
