As the summer (what summer I hear you ask) blends into autumn, not only do the seasons change, so does our health, with us being more susceptible to colds, SADS and general unwellness – we talk to breakfast TV’s Dr Hilary Jones on his top tips for staying healthy this autumn (page 12). The nights may be drawing in, but that doesn’t mean we need to hibernate, how about the cinema (page 74) theatre (page 38) or a night away in a luxury hotel (page 66) We have everything to make sure your social life doesn’t hibernate as well. Promises we make them to other people all the time, but what about to ourselves – who makes a promise to their inner self? – I bet there’s not many of us – but it is a proven fact we should, not only will it make us more productive it also means we learn to value and appreciate ourselves page 16 explains more.

Could the great outdoors be key to boosting your health and wellbeing this autumn? We explore the benefits with Dr Hilary Jones The autumn season symbolises a period of change and new beginnings, making it the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and refresh our health routine.
It makes us happy Research shows that spending time surrounded by nature can be a highly effective way to restore your sense of calm and boost your mood. But you don't need to head to the Amazon rainforest or go trekking in the Alps to feel rejuvenated. Research shows that spending as little as 15 or 20 minutes strolling or sitting peacefully outside can reduce feelings of anxiety. This autumn why not get your nature fix by joining a local walking group, going on a cycle ride or simply relax and enjoy your spot of countryside! Look up at the sky. Feel the wind. Listen to the birds. Relax.
It awakens the senses When we think of nature we immediately think of the sights, sounds, smell and touch of the outdoors – whether it’s listening to bird song, feeling rain on our skin, seeing trees sway in the breeze or hearing the sound of autumn leaves crunching underfoot. New research by high street hearing experts, Hidden Hearing reveals that three quarters of people claim their hearing is key to enjoying the great outdoors, yet despite this only a quarter say they would seek help if they were concerned about their hearing. Seeking help for a potential hearing problem is key, so if you’re not hearing as well as you used to, book a free hearing test at your local Hidden Hearing centre. Visit www.HiddenHearing.co.uk for more information. It gets us moving New research reveals that gardening is one of our favourite outdoor activities, and a spot of gardening not only gives you a good physical workout - researchers have found that smelling roses and pulling up weeds can lower blood pressure, increase brain activity and produce a general upbeat feeling. The science is now being used in hospitals and rehabilitation centres in the USA, where "healing gardens" have been created for patients to look at and walk through. Gardening is both energetic and relaxing at the same time, and there is nothing better than being able to stand back and admire your hard work.
It boosts your energy levels Feeling sluggish? The answer might be to get yourself outside, with research showing that spending time in nature makes us feel more alive and revitalised. Nature is fuel for the soul, and often when we feel low on energy we reach for a cup of coffee or a sugary snack, but getting out in the fresh air is a quick way to kick your brain into high gear, so ditch the caffeine and stick to a walk in the park instead! Research has also shown that people with a greater sense of vitality don’t just have more energy for things they want to do, they are also more resilient to physical illnesses.
Don’t forget your eyes A long walk is the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors this autumn, but for many, getting outside and facing the elements can cause excessively watery eyes. Keeping our eyes properly hydrated is the best way to avoid this irritation. Sarah Farrant, leading optometrist and Dry Eye Specialist recommends Hycosan eye drops (£8.99 at opticians and pharmacies) as they’re preservative free and leave eyes feeling comfortable and refreshed. Specialist Tear Clinics are now available at optometry clinics around the UK to help diagnose and manage dry eye disease and blepharitis more effectively - Visit www.TearClinic.com

The Power of a Promise I
t’s a word we have probably all used, but many of us won’t have realised the power that is held in that simple word.
One of the things we probably also know about promises is that if they are broken sometimes it can cause pain and distress.
As usual let’s start with a definition from the online dictionary
But the kind of promises I want to talk about in this article are the promises that we make to ourselves which are just as powerful as any we might make to others.
Promise - ‘a declaration or assurance that one will do something or that a particular thing will happen’ Most of us will have come across formal promises, for example in marriages, or legal agreements where people make a promise, or pledge, to do something or pay something to someone else.
What is a promise to ourselves? We might not use the word promise very often but in fact making a promise to ourselves is a powerful way of making sure something happens. Somehow it is more than an idea or a thought it is something we really want to happen.
Sept2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/09/2017 21:09 Page 15
What stops us making a promise to ourselves? Often it is because somewhere inside we don’t think we count very much. Usually that is because we acknowledge the needs of others before our own and in many ways that is the first attitude that needs to shift. What kind of things should we promise ourselves? When it comes to promises we should start with the big picture - so if your life is too busy and you feel you never get time for yourself, then the promise you could make would be to make sure you make time each day or week to do things you want to. But having a reason why helps to add weight to your promise. Why should you make time for yourself? Because you deserve it, you are of value and it is important for your health and well-being. Let’s look at a few examples to help this all make sense. The particular promises you make will be individual but as humans we share a lot of common struggles so there will also be a few general ones - and that is a good place to start. Think about 5 areas of your life that are important to most people - there will be some variations but as an example let’s start with the list below you can adapt it a bit to suit yourself. • • • •
Personal health and well being People, family and friends Work or business Hobbies and holidays - the extras that seem important to you • Money and finances Now for each of these areas think of one way that area of your life could be improved.
For health and wellbeing you want to start some regular exercise, lose weight, or learn to relax more to manage stress. Chose the one that seems top of your list right now and write down what you would like to do. Make sure it is realistic but also something that is a little bit of a stretch. So maybe you’d write - I want to get to the gym two times a week. Then convert that into a promise “My health is important so I promise myself to make time to visit the gym twice each week.” It starts with the big picture but then is made very specific. The best way to go about this is to think about something for each area but start with one, when that is embedded - and you are keeping your promise to yourself move onto the next. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many all at once.
Why is making a promise to ourselves important In a study at Yale University 70% of people who set goals achieved them, but 98% of those who made a promise to themselves, achieved them. We probably all think that a promise has ‘weight’ hopefully we don’t promise things lightly because we see promises as binding. That means that we are inclined to stick with it even when the going gets tough simply because we have made a promise. You can probably remember saying things like ‘I don’t really want to go …but I promised’. Generally we see promises as important and we will strive to keep them. That’s why making a promise to yourself can be an important tool. Writing it down Most pledges are recorded in some way - often written down and it might sound unnecessary to do this with a promise to yourself but actually there is a power in writing it down or recording it in some way - it can actually add weight to it and make it more likely that you will keep it. So you can write in a diary or on a post it and stick it somewhere visible or of course on your phone. Declaration One of the other important aspects of a promise is making sure it is witnessed- lots of legal documents need to be signed in the presence of a witness, and when it comes to an official role, or being married, these things require that witnesses are present. So I am not suggesting you have a promise party, (though maybe that isn’t such a bad idea) but it is important to tell someone that you have made a promise to yourself - it is of course up to you but if you are serious about keeping that promise you‘ve made, telling someone else usually means you are more likely to keep it.
Promise to make a promise If life is great then you might not need to worry about making a promise to yourself but many of us have some areas of our lives that aren’t quite as we’d like them and that is when a promise can have a powerful effect and help you to change. Midlife Madness The Return of Culinary Sanity
I’m not for one moment suggesting I will be the next Mary Berry - though when it comes to age I’m probably more akin to her than Nigella, but I do confess to both a love of cookery, especially rich, cream laden, ‘naughties’ a la Nigella, and an enjoyment of cookery - though not in such a seductive manner as Nigella in fact I probably bear more resemblance to a kind of female hairy biker - I even have a Geordie accent! I thoroughly enjoy when time permits making everything from midweek dinners (though if I’m honest I do this less and less as seem to be later and later getting in from work), entertaining friends and even things like making bread, cakes, and pickles and jams. The downside is that they are then in the house and need eating! But when the summer months are upon us a culinary madness descends. Somehow everyone thinks of picnics and barbecues. Both of which present challenges. I enjoy eating al fresco but that doesn’t mean I enjoy cooking al fresco. Think of BBQs - you have them when it is hot and, call me a kill joy, but on a lovely hot day why do we feel the need to increase the temperatures with the addition of a great big fire in the garden? I know that the ‘hunter’ that lies dormant in most men can’t wait to get busy with those flames but it seems to take only a few minutes till temperatures soar for the chef, necessitating much liquid refreshment and we all know the result!! Thankfully I don’t eat meat, but I imagine there have been a lot of dodgy tummies following the blackened (put still pink inside) offerings that were once decent sausages or cuts of meat! Then there is the smoke, it’s almost guaranteed even on a still day that some wind will appear and after careful consideration of where to site the barbecue the direction of said wind will change necessitating a move of tables and chairs much coughing and spluttering and yes more cold drinks - okay so that isn’t too much of a problem!!
Suffice it to say that while the notion of sipping wine and eating scrummy food outdoors is great, the idea of cooking outside with few of the essential utensils (so much nipping back indoors), and great effort in getting the charcoal to light when there is a perfectly good oven indoors just seems to add unnecessary complications to life. Then there are the summer picnics - many of my objections are the same - we have perfectly lovely plates, knives you can cut with and glasses you can enjoy drinking from, but then you take a meal to some far distant place and eat from plastic plates or boxes, drink from plastic cups and try to cut through things with a knife that breaks in two and a fork that collapses when you stab food. Then there is the food itself - so many ponderables you are almost guaranteed to get it wrong - if you dress the salad it goes soggy - if you take the dressing separately, it doesn’t matter what receptacle you use, it will leak spreading an oily ‘goo’ everywhere! With picnics often there isn’t even a table - you might take portable chairs of some kind -but in my experience they all share a demonic quality that delights in throwing you to the floor if at all possible - usually when everyone is watching!! Hard to be dignified especially if the fall means you have thrown your food and drink all over yourself. If you decide not to risk the chair then you are stuck on the floor - on that English classic the picnic rug - but that is just another recipe for disaster in my book - I have never been a fan of sitting on the floor and it gets more and more of a challenge as I get older - well to be precise getting up from the floor is the challenge. So while I hate to see summer end at least culinary sanity returns with the drawing in nights and the cooling of tempertures.

The Benefits of Beautiful Beetroot and its Superfood Nutritional Qualities Beetroot has become a firm favourite and is often featured on restaurant menus and in recipes. Even Paralympic gold medallist David Weir announced that a shot of beetroot juice was the secret to his success, thus increasing its popularity. The benefits of beets
Beetroot has long been used for liver disorders due to its ability to help stimulate the liver’s detoxification process. Being high in fibre also enables it to aid with the overall digestive system, beneficial to those who may suffer with a sluggish constitution. It is an excellent source of iron and folate (naturally occurring folic acid) so can prove beneficial to pregnant women. More recent studies are revealing beetroot has positive results for lowering blood pressure, aiding exercise performance and helping to prevent dementia. Some studies have even shown beetroot to increase levels of antioxidant enzymes and white blood cells in the body – both responsible for detecting and eliminating abnormal cells. Fun beet facts
Some people claim that the juice, massaged into the scalp, can clear u dandruff
Since the Victorian era, people have used it to dye their hair It can be used as a sugar substitute when baking cakes due to its naturally sweet taste The Romans even used it as an aphrodisiac due to its high levels of boron In some cultures, it is believed that if a man and a woman eat from the same beet, they will fall in love Beets can be made into a wine-like beverage that tastes like Port Simon Bandy, who is General Manager at nutritional supplements company Veganicity, which has launched a new Beetroot nutritional supplement says: “Beetroot has been cultivated for humans since the Roman times and is now a staple in any good salad. When you read about its nutritional qualities, you will understand why. We developed high strength capsules (Veganicity Beetroot £12.95/60 caps) to enable customers to gain the maximum benefits from this marvellous vegetable without having to consume the equivalent of four roots per day!”

Time for Tea!
Sept2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/09/2017 21:21 Page 37
“Would you like an adventure now, or shall we have tea first?” (Alice in Wonderland), definitely tea I think, but no ordinary tea mind you we are going to venture to The Sanderson Hotel in London and enjoy their special ‘Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea” On arrival we make our way into the private courtyard garden that really is a whimsical, lush open-air oasis brimming with flowering trees, a fountain, mosaics and a reflecting pool, it is so magical you almost expect the white rabbit to jump out from behind the trees. First things first a glass of Perrier- Jouet champagne to enjoy whilst looking at the menu, and then it’s time for the fun to begin. Hidden inside a vintage hardback book is the menu, a savoury and sweet delight, the sugar is inside a working music box, complete with twirling ballerina. The crockery is decorated with zebras, birdcages and ticking clocks and the napkins are all wrapped in riddles – you feel like a child again, transported back to Alice’s adventures in a whimsical wonderland. The Teas, come loose leaf in miniature perfume bottles all named after characters, – I couldn’t resist opting for the ‘Cheshire Cat’, a marmalade orange infused tea with chocolate and hugging orange and hubbie chose ‘Alice’ China black tea infused with hints of blackcurrant, vanilla, caramel, citrus, bergamot, blue cornflowers and blue mallow flowers, both served in King and Queen teapots complete with crown. Starting with delicious savoury bites, all with a little twist, from the quail scotch egg, surrounded by smoked salmon and topped with a taster of caviar, which was absolutely divine to the Stack of King of Hearts ham and parmesan croquemonsieur that literally melts in the mouth, all washed down with Alice’s cinnamon, apple and peach “Drink Me” potion this afternoon tea just gets curioser and curioser. After devouring our savoury selection, it was time for the sweet treats,
all creatively designed to keep with the theme, pocket watch macarons, playing card sandwich biscuits, marshmallow mushrooms, a chocolate and pistachio caterpillar as well of course scones! Did the taste measure up to the creativity? Oh yes it certainly did, everything was delightful, we didn’t want to leave – Oh and I nearly forgot just as you think there are no more wonders in wonderland, a mini plant pot is brought to you filled with a chocolate and honeycomb ice-cream, topped with an edible flower, truly scrumptious. This has got to be one of my favourite afternoon teas to date, from the courtyard garden, to the exquisite presentation, quirky extras and delicious taste – A fabulous afternoon, that everyone has to experience at least once before it disappears down the rabbit hole!
BOOK IT! The Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea is priced at £48 per person, and £58 per person to include a glass of Perrier-Jouet Champagne. For reservations call 0207 300 5588 email: restaurant.resuk@sbe.com www.morganshotelgroup.com

Aiming for Perfection
W
e love exploring London - it’s hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs and if we’re lucky, every now and then, we find somewhere that we just want to shout from the rooftops all about – a hidden gem! And that is exactly what we found on our last visit. A contemporary converted Victorian warehouse, just minutes away from Farringdon Station and perfectly situated between East London and the West End is The Zetter in Clerkenwell. The restaurant has a modern vibe, with contemporary and retro hues. The vast wooden bar spans most of the dining area and the modernistic retro décor creates a relaxed atmosphere.
One of the big focuses at The Zetter is the wine. They serve wine on tap (two reds and two whites). Wine is stored in a high- tech bag housed in a keg that mimics winery conditions, savings are made on packaging that are instead spent on better wine. We tried the Spanish 2015 Albarino, Rego do Sol from Rias Baixas which was crisp and floral with ripe peach and citrus aromas and the Italian Friulano 2015, Vini Stocco, dry, aromatic and spicy with a creamy fresh pear finish – Both were served in their own individual mini cravats and were the perfect accompaniment to the olives, fresh bread and salted butter that began our fabulous dining experience. I use the word fabulous, because I have to say apart from the finest finest fine dining I haven’t tasted food so utterly divinely delicious as here at The Zetter.

First to tease our tastebuds was the salad of artichokes, crispy hens egg, pickled mushrooms, cured ham and organic leaves, presented perfectly with the egg taking centre stage on the artichokes and leaves, and mushrooms dotted around, it’s all very well looking like a piece of art, but it’s really the taste that matters and it certainly got top marks for that - herby, fresh, and full of flavour. The smoked salmon, dill, and rye was another piece of art and just as tasty, the chunky cubes of salmon were so fresh and delicious. Before the mains came we were treated to the pea and broad bean risotto – A vibrant green in colour with chunks of sheep’s curd and shavings of black truffle. The sheep’s curd melted into the risotto making each mouthful so tasty I nearly forgot I still had a main. Pan roasted Cornish cod, on a bed of seaweed crushed potatoes, and creamed mussels with sea herbs was a dish that brought all the flavours of the sea together. The cod fell apart into delicate flakes and the creamy mussel sauce amalgamated together with the seaweed potatoes to create a real culinary masterpiece. And when in The Zetter, at least one of us needed to try The Zetter burger with it’s triple cooked chips and onion rings - Seasoned to bring out all the meaty flavours of the burger with a bun that was light and not heavy and chips that were super crisp (it’s very easy to go wrong with triple cooked chips). The staff here are friendly and attentive without being overbearing, allowing just enough time before offering us dessert and coffee. We finished our meal with the lemon posset, made from Amalfi lemons, topped with blueberry compote, and crossed with two warm vanilla beignets (warm doughnut sticks). The posset was creamy and light and the beignets literally melted in the mouth. And as for the prices, starters start from £5 and mains from £14 which means they shouldn’t be out of anyone’s budget. The standards at The Zetter are first class from the wines to the food to the service and with it being only three stops on the circle line from St Pancras International, there’s no excuse for not stopping by – You’ll be glad you did! Roasted Cauliflower & Chickpea Tikka Masala with Wild Rice
Roasting cauliflower is a delicious way to bring out its flavour; it gives the florets a crisp exterior yet they remain tender on the inside. Cauliflower is so versatile and with its ability to aid cell detoxification it’s a nourishing vegetable that is worth including regularly in your diet. Ingredients 100g wild rice 500ml boiling water ½ cauliflower coconut or olive oil 1 red onion 2 tomatoes handful of fresh coriander 2 tbsp tikka masala paste 200g drained chickpeas 200ml coconut milk sea salt
Method
Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Place the wild rice in a pan with the boiling water and a pinch of sea salt and simmer for 25–30 minutes, until the rice is cooked. Cut the cauliflower into small florets, place in a bowl and mix with 1 teaspoon of oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. Place on a baking tray and roast in the oven for 10–15 minutes, until golden. Meanwhile, thinly slice the red onion. Roughly chop the tomatoes and coriander. Heat ½ teaspoon of oil in a medium-sized pan and cook the red onion for 5 minutes, until softened. Stir in the tikka masala paste and cook for 1 minute, then add the roasted cauliflower florets to the pan and stir to coat in the paste. Add the drained chickpeas to the pan along with the chopped tomatoes, coconut milk and 100ml of water. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until the sauce has reduced. Stir in half the coriander leaves. Drain the wild rice, place the rice on warm plates and spoon over the cauliflower. Anyone for Steak? M any chefs put their name to restaurants and the former three Michelin starred chef, Marco Pierre White is no exception. The latest addition to his Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and Grill is the Double Tree Hilton in Milton Keynes (housed within the MK Dons football stadium). With it’s own entrance on the other side of the building, you walk through the double doors to a lobby area with the oversized black and white chair that we all know is synonymous with Marco Pierre White where a lift whisks you up to the first floor, and the first thing you see as you step out is a large black and white picture of Marco greeting you. Walk into the restaurant and the décor is both modern and contemporary with dark wood furniture accessorized with purples, greens and
greys along with even more black and white pictures and press clippings of Marco adjourning the wall. The restaurant is also perfectly placed to look out over the pitch from an outside terrace whilst you enjoy a pre dinner cocktail before heading inside to your table for dinner. After being shown to our seats, we enjoyed an aperitif whilst studying the menu. Marcos Steakhouse Bar & Grill is renowned for its quality steaks, as well as some of Marco’s classic British and French dishes that include Roast Rump of Lamb a la Dijonnaise and Mr Lamb’s Shepherd’s Pie along with some of his childhood favourites - classic chicken Kiev, The Governor’s fried haddock and triple cooked chips and Wheeler’s classic prawn cocktail.

We began our dining experience with appetizers of glazed chipolata sausages cut into bite size pieces and Mediterranean olives - I could easily have had the chipolatas as my main meal they were so scrumptious Starters followed with salt and pepper calamari with a chilli and spring onion, lemon mayonnaise dip - the calamari was crisp and flavourful, with the dip adding a slight kick to the tastebuds. A mushroom tartlet with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce was the other choice, I wasn’t too sure about this combination, but it was delicious, the pastry literally melted in the mouth and the finely chopped mushroom and egg were the perfect combination, each mouthful was a delight. It would be wrong to visit a steakhouse and not try the steak so the 10oz rib eye was my choice and the Hickory smoked babyback ribs was hubbies. The steak was well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The sticky BBQ sauce on the ribs was full of flavour and the meat was succulent and tender and just melted away from the bone. Both dishes were a big hit – A little note, if you don’t have a big appetite don’t order the ribs, they are enormous! The temptation of the dessert menu yet again proved too much and the banana and caramel mess was my indulgence – this was a real sweet treat that was just delightful. The sticky toffee pudding was a good texture, and just the right temperature to allow the ice cream to slowly melt. Does Marco Pierre White actually cook here? Don't be silly of course he doesn’t. But all recipes are written by him and followed by the chefs in the kitchen. The restaurant is perfect for enjoying the company of family and friends, whilst drinking in the atmosphere and buzz. The comfortable surroundings and professional and friendly service make it a great place to visit. Marco Pierre White Restaurant 01908 20622919 www.mpwrestaurants.co.uk/milton-keynes

They're creepy and they're kooky...mysterious and spooky...
The Addams Family
IT’S the dream of every actor to see their name in lights – or at least, above the title of the show they’re in. But you’ve got to start somewhere and in the case of loca girl KIRSTY INGRAM that somewhere is onstage, dressed as a ghoulish Geisha Ancestor in The Addams Family – The Musical Comedy. By the time The Addams Family arrives in Milton Keynes Theatre next month (October), Kirsty will have exerted hundreds of hours of spectacularly spooky energy, singing and dancing her ghostly socks off in eight performances a week. We caught up with Kirsty to finds out what it’s like being a frightfully ghoulish Geisha. “It’s an incredibly physical show” she says. On top of the eight performances a week we rehearse the ensemble stuff daily and then on Saturdays we have a ‘covers’ rehearsal.” As understudy, or cover, for the part of Wednesday Addams, everyone –
cast, director, musical director, choreographer, crew and not least Kirsty herself - has to be totally confident that, if necessary, she could go on and be terrific in what is one of the leading roles in the show. But this is the start of a dream come true for local girl Kirsty whose talent for dancing and singing were evident by the time she was 16 and who, by the time she was 18, gained a place to study Musical Theatre at BA degree level at the internationally respected Arts Educational School in London. Now, just one year after graduating, Kirsty, who comes from Bozeat just across the county border in Northamptonshire, is living the dream and the fact that her family and friends can see her performing on her home turf, makes it even sweeter. But there are potential dangers lurking in every show – and it’s not just the Addams Family’s skeletons in the cupboard or the instruments of torture in the cellar.

“The big worry for me is whether my wig is going to fall off ” she confesses. “It’s very heavy and piled high and the choreographed dance numbers are really energetic. Besides that I’ve got several really quick changes and while it’s easy to get the costume I wear off, it’s secured with poppers and they take longer to do up to get it on. But I love the part; she’s sweet one minute and totally crazy the next. I knew nothing about Geishas but part of the rehearsal process was to give a presentation about the life of a Geisha so I did a lot of research and watched the film Memoirs of a Geisha and learnt how to do the makeup and wear the costume.” Expending all that energy during the show ensures that the ensemble players – who are rarely offstage – don’t have to follow a fitness regime in their precious time off. “I’m a sociable person so I like to catch up with friends when I can but otherwise, on my days off, I’ll chill out and definitely have a lie-in! I eat as soon as I can after the show because I can’t leave it too late but otherwise I’ll just tend to snack – oh, and I do have a huge breakfast which helps me through the day.” The other important thing that helps Kirsty through the day is ambition and her passionate commitment to being the best
that she can possibly be. “If you want to do something” she says, “go for it. Don’t hold back. Don’t feel judged by anyone but try your hardest and make it happen. Playing in the ensemble in The Addams Family is hard work but I’d so much rather be onstage than not. It’s so rewarding . The adrenalin flows and I get such a buzz out of it every night. I feel very lucky to be in such a great show. It’s very, very funny. The choreography is a joy to dance, the music is really catchy and it’s a great family show that appeals to everyone. Catch it while you can, that’s what I say!” The Addams Family is at Milton Keynes Theatre from 24th – 28th October. Tickets are on sale now from www.atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes

Fry’s Footie Corner
They have assembled a dynamic squad who are playing with a smile on their face and they have already amassed a decent total which will stand them in good stead for the rest of the campaign. Arsenal have also struggled early days and Arsene Wenger is already under pressure – he will know that he will need to turn things around quickly. I was surprised to see Newcastle United quickly looking to dispense with the services of our former striker Dwight Gayle. I firmly believe he will score goals in the Premier League if he is given game time, but both Crystal Palace and Newcastle United don’t seem to share that same belief.
We are one month into the new campaign and I have to say as Director of Football at Peterborough United, it has been an excellent start for us with four straight league wins and an opening success in the Checkatrade Trophy against a talented Southampton side. But I have been in football long enough to be able to use this phrase, ‘it’s a marathon not a sprint’, and although everyone connected with the Posh has enjoyed the start, a start is all it is and we know we need to keep it going for as long as possible. What is exciting though is the amount of goals that we have scored, four away at Bristol Rovers and four in the local derby at Northampton is a great return and I know that the supporters are enjoying what they are seeing. We are not getting carried away though. We have a lot of tough games on the horizon including two local derbies in the Checkatrade Trophy, which I am sure the fans are looking forward to. On a national front, it has been interesting to see Huddersfield Town adapt to the Premier League very quickly.
Another former Posh striker, Britt Assombalonga, moved to Middlesbrough and he will certainly score the goals they require to get promoted if he can stay injury free. His record speaks for itself. Enjoy the next month of football, I know I will.

For more than 30 years, the M5 has been the epitome of the ultimate sports saloon. Launched in 1984, it was always a car that hid its amazing sporting capabilities behind a discreet yet powerful exterior. The latest model embodies that spirit and takes it yet further. The all-new sixth generation of the BMW M5 Saloon, will launch in February 2018 equipped with an enhanced V8 engine, a new M-specific, all-wheel drive system known as M xDrive and performance statistics that surpass all previous incarnations. Key to this heightened level of performance is the introduction of M xDrive and its adaptability thanks to a central control module and the variety of different dynamic modes that can be selected. When first started, the car is in four-wheel-drive mode with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) switched on. But it comes with
various driving dynamics modes, up to a track-friendly pure rear-wheel drive without DSC. Power comes from the latest 4.4-litre V8 engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. It delivers a maximum torque of 750Nm, accelerating the new M5 from zero to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds, making it the fastest M5 yet. Power is transferred to the road via a new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. All of this performance is wrapped in a design that adheres to the form follows function mantra of all BMWs. The front design serves to splice the oncoming air in the most aerodynamic fashion while at the same time providing the breathing and cooling requirements for a 600hp engine and its braking system, and the downforce required of a high performance saloon.

Open the Doors on Luxury and Design at Woughton House MGallery by Sofitel
I
n London, you’re truly spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury hotels. In fact, there are so many upscale properties to choose from in the British capital, it’s difficult to know where to start. But what about out of London?
Yes there are many, you just need to know where to find them and we’ve done just that for you and found a hidden gem in the small village of Woughton-on-the-Green on the outskirts of Milton Keynes. Having recently undergone an extensive refurbishment Woughton House - MGallery by Sofitel Hotel is a heritage Georgian House, surrounded by acres of parkland, lakes and orchards making it perfect for an indulgent luxury rural retreat. As you drive through the gates and approach Woughton House, you feel the hustle and bustle of everyday life slowly slipping away to be replaced with a more calm and relaxed ambience
Walking into the hotel, it is obvious how carefully the décor has been thought out, deep blue walls, feature fireplaces, gold velvet plush sofas and chairs with further blue hues dotted around. The décor is delicately Regal without being over the top. Speaking of Regal, it’s a well known fact that Peacocks are the birds of Royalty and thus it seems only right that Woughton House have incorporated these birds iridescent colours into its décor - but it doesn’t stop at the colours look down at your feet and you will see the carpet, these birds are looking up at you from the plush blue carpet and it is absolutely divine – I want it in my own house. Staff are just as wonderful as the décor, nothing is too much trouble, and there is always a smile greeting you. Woughton House has three parts, the original part of the house, the new part and the stable block, all have been beautifully renovated to offer rooms full of character, soft furnishings and little luxuries.
Sept2017.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/09/2017 21:28 Page 65
Our room The Elms Suite was in the original part of the house, overlooking the front of the hotel. You can tell no expense has been spared when recreating these rooms, from the feature peacock wallpaper (this time in soft hues of grey, pink and green) to the large feature charcoal fabric covered headboard along with the soft pink cushions and chair, to the taupe sofa, neutral coffee table and elegant draped curtains, then there are the finishing touches, the little luxuries that I always think go a long way to your opinion of a hotel – the handmade boxed Woughton House chocolates, a Nespresso machine, flat screen TV, kettle and fridge , with the bathroom allowing you to spoil yourself with Penhaligons toiletries including eye cream and lip balm. The room was sooo enticing I just wanted to laze on the sofa, glass of champagne in one hand, chocolate in the other enjoying the peace and tranquility – but we had other plans – Afternoon Tea! Woughton House offers two different Afternoon Teas ‘The Duchess’ and ‘The Highway Man’ named after the infamous Highway man Dick Turpin who frequented the village and who’s ghost is often seen in the area! Both sounded utterly scrumptious so whilst enjoying a cool glass of bubbles on the outdoor terrace we made the difficult decision of having both! But before the food is the tea, a selection from Twinings all loose leaf and all slightly different from the norm – Luckily for me, hubby is always open to experiencing new tastes unlike me who will never stray further than an English Breakfast Tea, his choice was the Nutty Chocolat Assam, which had a delicious nutty chocolate flavour and smelt like Ferrero Rocher – (hmmm maybe I could be tempted). Delightful fresh sandwiches and savoury treats tempted our tastebuds, with the heritage tomato and mozzarella tartlet (Highwayman) being my favourite it literally melted in the mouth and as for the cakes and sweet treats – well needless to say they were all as much a treat as the other but if I had to choose the mini Victoria sponge cake was a dream as was the strawberry Eaton mess tartlet – The verdict Duchess or Highway Man? Both, they both bring different tastes and textures that I would love to try again. All this Afternoon Tea scrumptiousness had made me slightly full, so a little exploring around the lush green gardens was just what the doctor ordered before we retired to enjoy the calmness of our room. Dinner is served in Seasons fine dining restaurant, an elegant space with a mixture of blues and greys and a magnificent feature wall depicting birds in trees – The restaurant has an intimate relaxed feel and we began our dining experience with The Woughton House Gin Cup, a cocktail of Gin, elderflower, apples, mint and lime – it was so refreshing I can see why it’s so popular. The food menu offers an amazing range of dishes and thus it was only after much deliberation we decided on smoked Barbary duck with cherries, pistachio and brioche and the wood pigeon with baby artichoke, carrots and walnuts – both dishes were full of creativity and flair and cooked to perfection. Woburn estate venison loin with potato, turnips, broccoli and summer truffles and Ouzel valley lamb loin with celeriac, courgettes, Savoy cabbage and sweetbread continued to impress with not only taste but also presentation.
We managed to find room for dessert with the restaurants individual take on strawberries and cream (far too pretty to eat!) and lemon meringue pie, both were delicately presented and delightful to the tastebuds. Dining here is a real treat – the ambience is just And the service exceptional and knowledgeable, you don’t have to be a resident so it’s easy to just come and enjoy the culinary delights that are on offer. Retiring to our room after dinner, it is hard to believe that this luxurious retreat is only minutes from the centre of Milton Keynes it feels as if you are in the middle of nowhere miles from civilization. Next morning the foodie delight continues with a buffet breakfast fit for a King (here we go, referencing back to Royalty again) with an extensive buffet, delicately set out so as to keep in with the elegant surroundings – dishes can also be ordered off the menu and we opted for eggs Benedict and poached eggs on toast, setting us up for the day perfectly. If you’re seeking a luxury break, then Woughton House – MGallery by Sofitel is a must. Their attention to detail with every element is second to none; add to that the stylish interior, delicious food and impeccable service and we guarantee you won’t want to leave. BOOK IT!

Exclusivity and Luxury at
T
he Algarve, has always been one of my favourite destinations, with its blue skies, golden sands, hidden beaches and gorgeous food, what is there not to love? And now there’s a new reason to visit, somewhere that offers you exclusivity and luxury, somewhere you can pretend just for a while you’re an Alist celebrity – It is the place to have been seen at this summer and every other summertime to come. It’s Blanco Beach Club in Praia da Rocha, this summer’s hottest new opening. A beachside luxury that brings you a 5 star experience, fusing European beach club culture and luxury lifestyle with an iconic Portuguese backdrop. Inspired by the white seamless beachfront, the brand name and logo was derived from the love of white sandy beaches and white tigers: exotic, gorgeous and unforgettable. Opened in July, we paid it a visit to see if it’s quickly growing reputation, as the place to be seen this summer was true. With a flight time of around 3 hours from the UK to Faro airport, you’ll soon be sipping cocktails and champagne listening to live DJ’s by day and live acts by night. Our flight with Monarch airlines had us touching down ready to paaaaarty. After a quick change and freshen up in our spacious Deluxe Pool View Room at the recently opened 5 star *Anantara Vilamoura Algarve luxury resort hotel (our home for the next four days) it was time for us to be picked up by our driver and whisked off to see if all the hype was true.

Having already played host to some big names including Tyga, French Montana, Ty Dolla Sign and Fat Man Scoop, we were in for a treat as Kid Ink was performing, and we were doubly lucky, having been shown to our VIP seats, (our own private table with sunken seats and soft neon lightening directly next to the stage), we managed to catch Kid Ink practicing for his big performance later in the evening (or should I say early hours of the morning). Against the backdrop of some banging tunes we sipped champagne and cocktails whilst washing it down with a selection of Japanese sushi and sashimi that tasted just as good as it looked. The champagne just kept coming and the party just kept on going (well until 3am!) In the day the beach club changes from the place to party to the place to chill, and as the name Blanco suggests everything is white (well almost everything) from the white washed walls to the round lounging day beds, white wooden bar area and white cabanas with their own private Jacuzzi’s, to even the champagne flutes and cocktail glasses. Add to that the turquoise blue of the 20-metre pool taking centre stage on the wooden decking and you have the making of a serene oasis of elegant luxury, with the live DJ playing tunes all day - all you have to do is eat, drink, chat and sleep – You don’t have to move unless you’re changing position or taking a dip in the pool, as everything is waiter service and a good one at that, fear not you’ll not be without a cocktail in your hand for too long. Blanco Beach Club’s reputation is already building as THE place to be and we can see why, if you want to live the jet set lifestyle of the rich and famous (if only for a day) or feel like you’re starring in a Tinie Tempah music video then this is the place for you!
