Down on

The Ranch Lisa & Rylan

Lisa Smith and Rylan White married at The Island Guest Ranch in Oklahoma 48

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:41 Page 47

How did you meet? Finding true love is really in large part down to a good friend of mine, as she asked me to join her on the Arizona ranch way back in 2004. I said yes, and as I had never been on a horse before I immediately booked up 20 lessons at the Oxenways Western Riding School in Devon. I had a fabulous time and decided to continue with my lessons on my return home. Once I had the cowgirl bug there was really no stopping me. I’d fallen in love with horses and the whole ranching lifestyle in six months flat and the following year I booked my next holiday at the Island Guest Ranch. I was keen to the hit the trails again, and having requested "no nose to tail riding," it seemed like the perfect place. It was there that I met Rylan and his family, and it’s our passion for all things western that really brought us together.

I subsequently visited every year with girlfriends, sometimes twice a year, and Rylan and I became really good friends. In 2010, I decided to further my colt starting skills and take a three-month sabbatical, and it was during this time that our relationship blossomed, and Rylan proposed.

How did the proposal happen? The proposal was something extra special, as Rylan left my ring on a pair of handmade spur straps he’d had designed for me by a good friend of his. He told me to put the straps on my boots, but I said I was tired and needed to go to bed. Not prepared to give up he kept on asking, and I finally looked at the strap. A beautiful diamond engagement ring was staring back at me and I immediately wrapped my arms around his neck and said YES!!! 49

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:41 Page 48

What did the bride wear? A Maggie Sorento A line roman style white chiffon dress with crystal detail in the band.

What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The bridesmaids wore plum Alfred Angelo A line dresses and the men cream chinos with plum and white check shirts What was your theme? Purple Something Blue? Blue ribbon in dress

What were the highlights? Fun and dancing with friends and family

Your best buy? We kept our spend to a minimum, being a photographer I know all the little details are not important - what is important is having beautiful photos to look back on and the fact that you are marrying the man of your dreams. How did it end? With beautifully lit portrait photos with Chris Humphrey.

is there anything you wish you’d done differently? I would have loved to have had a separate party back in England for friends that weren’t able to come over.

Where did you go on honeymoon? We have yet to go on honeymoon…….looking after the livestock on the ranch keeps us very busy.

Grace & Andrew

Grace and Andrew were married on 14th September 2014 at The Sheene Mill in Melbourn, Cambridgeshire. 52

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:42 Page 51

How did you meet? We met through friends when Grace was 15 and Andy was 17. How did the proposal happen? We were on the beach in Portugal, when Andy dropped down to one knee. Grace's answer 'are you being serious?' What did the Bride wear? A Justin Alexander tea length dress.

What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The bridesmaids wore navy dresses with coral accessories, to match the groom and best man’s coral cravats, socks and even pants!

What was your wedding day style? The idea for our wedding was for nothing to be too serious and everything we like... even down to the caterpillar bride and groom wedding cakes Something Blue? I wore blue shoes bridesmaids.

my

What were the highlights? The highlights for us was having a fabulous photographer who caught some brilliant photos, delicious food, everybody having a great evening dancing the night away, and mostly just having a really fun filled day with nothing taken too seriously. 53

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:42 Page 52

How did it end? When Andy was finally able to peel Grace and the bridesmaids off the dance floor, we all stayed in the hotel and Grace and Andy snuggled down with the bridal polar bear (made at ‘build a bear’ on the hen night). Followed by family breakfast the next morning and dishing out the left over sweet table sweets.

Is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Grace would have had her hair done first as the hairdresser fainted after doing the bridesmaids hair. Other than that it was everything we wanted.

Where did you go on honeymoon? The honeymoon was a surprise planned by the mother of the bride. We ended up in Rome and Sardinia, lovely weather and lots of pasta!

Alexandra and Joel were married on 4th July 2015 at Birling Manor in East Dean, Sussex 56

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:42 Page 55

How did you meet? At a flat I was renting in 2012 and she came to look at it with one of her friends, the rest is history How did the proposal happen? On her 25th birthday on 19th September 2014 at Alexander House in Sussex

What did the Bride wear? I found it extremely difficult to chose my perfect dress, they are all so beautiful. After months of searching and trying on loads of dresses I

finally ended up buying two dresses, both completely different from the other. On the day I decided to wear the one designed by Agusta Joens, Juno, to which I added a lace bolero made by Ann Prescott to make it into ‘THE ONE’. What did the rest of the Bridal party wear? The bridesmaids wore a multi wrap silver dress. The Flower girl had a dusty pink dress and Bonnie (our French Bulldog) wore a bespoke flower collar and matching lead.

57

A4mag2.qxp_Layout 1 09/09/2015 20:42 Page 56

What was your theme? It was a Festival themed wedding, but our guests described it as a garden style wedding. Something Blue? Blue high tights.

What were the highlights? Seeing friends and family come from all over the world to our special day, and my 1955 Morris Minor car complete with a hog roast all fired up with the pig spinning. is there anything you wish you’d done differently? Spoken about my wife in my speech! Ha Ha!

Where did you go on honeymoon? Cape Verde for 10 days then Brussels for 4 days to finish off.

Autumn Wedding 5 Advantages of Planning an

Fireworks, friends being available, and beautiful photo opportunities are just a few reasons why an autumn wedding shouldn’t be overlooked. If you’re deliberating on whether to hold your wedding post-holiday season, the Head Wedding Planner at Burnham Beeches Hotel in Buckinghamshire has recommended a few reasons why ‘I Do’ might be better said in the autumnal season.

flourish in the crisper seasons. Opt for bouquets, corsages and centre pieces to take advantage of the beautiful seasonal tones. Candles: Add some fuel to the fire by striking some matches, a trick guaranteed to warm up even the frostiest of guests. Candles of any size are a great way to set a romantic mood, especially when the evening draws in. If you’re lucky enough to bag a venue with a fireplace, you could even invite toasted marshmallows to the party.

No One’s on Holiday: Autumn is generally a time to settle down after your summer adventures and catch up with friends. Holding a wedding in autumn will mean you can expect far more attendees and a buzz of constant conversation from your acquaintances catching up after a long summer. Your preferred photographer is also far more likely to be available, not to mention your photos of the day will look so much better with a holiday tan!

Price: Despite its advantages, you’re likely to be in the minority with a wedding in autumn or winter, meaning prices of venues will be significantly lower than their summery counterparts.

Standing handsomely within its own ten acres of private gardens and parklands, Burnham Beeches is an enchanting Georgian hideaway, located in the pretty village of Burnham, a convenient 50 minute drive from London. The historic country house is the perfect setting for a wedding, with its acres of beautiful gardens, stunning white facade, AA Rosette Restaurant, swimming pool and spa, 10 elegant and adaptable banqueting rooms, and 82 fashionable guest rooms.

Temperature: Unlike other optimistic Brits holding out for a sunshine filled wedding, if you’ve chosen an autumn date you will know to expect chillier weather and prepare accordingly. Your clothing choices will be far more diverse, with elegant long sleeved dresses an option, with no fear of overheating in the summer sun. Glam accessories such as faux fur shrugs or even elegant full length cloaks are also fun. So, if you are blessed with beautiful warm autumn sunshine, it will only be a pleasant surprise. Colour Tones: Autumnal flowers such as orange dahlias and stunning hibiscus

ndigo Pearl located on the coast of Phuket, combines the perfect fusion of industrial design and soft richness to create an exceptional ultra-luxury experience. There are few more magical locations to enjoy your honeymoon than on the private teak raft which takes you to Black Ginger, Indigo Pearl’s award winning Thai restaurant. The experience is pure fantasy as you sail to the majestic wooden mansion through artificial smoke spilling over the lily pond. The food lives up to the fairy-talesetting as you sit and enjoy the blissful cuisine. Accomodation ranges from spacious Premium Pearl Suites, which have high ceilings, small gardens and outdoor tubs, to impressive one and two-bedroom villas complete with butlers, private spa chambers, and vast blue and black-stripy swimming pools. With your own pool, bar, dining room, Jacuzzi, spa, sauna, steam room and a 24hour butler service, there’s little reason to leave. But, the real draw of the place, the 'pièce de résistance, is the Coqoon Spa - a musttry for all spa enthusiasts. The Spa has to be seen to be believed and consists of multiple luxurious spa suites called 'The Nests’ - huge spherical structures

seemingly suspended mid-air.
