Learning to Spread Love
AND LoveYourself
is they repeat the stresses and frustrations each and every year. But if it’s not good for you, or if it could be a better time of year for you then something needs to change – if you keep approaching the festive season with the same plans and doing the same things then the results will likely be the same, so if you ended up exhausted and fraught last year it will be likely to be the same this year, UNLESS you decide to make some changes.
We are approaching that time of year again when everyone will be preparing gifts, planning food and drink for a get together, (or several) deciding on decorations, possibly planning outfits for parties, and choosing cards. It’s a busy time of year and one that leaves many people feeling stressed and exhausted, even if they ‘love’ the time of year. Added to that the pressure, for many people, of negotiating gatherings with people who may not always get on too well with each other, and for families the constant pressure of meeting the media fuelled ‘present’ demands of children while balancing the family budget and yes - it can be a bit of a recipe for disaster.
Dream a Little Dream Start by thinking to yourself what would your perfect Christmas look like. Now this is a dream BUT it needs to be rooted in the reality you face. So if your dream is to be on a beach with a BBQ then unless you have already booked the trip or have money you’d be happy to use for this, then it’s unlikely to happen. Similarly if you fancy curling up on the sofa with a good book, TV dinner, and a gin and tonic, but you have several young children again it’s unlikely to happen.
So maybe it is time for a rethink and time to consider doing things differently, keeping the important parts but perhaps losing a lot of things that either cause stress or add pressure to what should be a time to be with people you love, doing things that you enjoy. After all, many people say it’s the same each year when what they mean 14
dec2015.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 19/11/2015 14:39 Page 13
When you have done that it’s time to get even more specific. So if you put ‘traditions’ on your list – are they all equally important or are some more important than others. I couldn’t imagine Christmas without a tree and holly wreath but as our children are all grown up, advent calendars don’t seem crucial for me. With regard to the food is it the bird or trimmings or is the fact that the mince pies MUST be homemade. Go through the list and assume nothing – and remember it is really up to you. It’s perfectly reasonable to do some things because you know that some of the people you love will enjoy them but if you spend most of the season doing things that either aren’t important to you or that you don’t enjoy then you’ll be back to square one.
Identify YOUR Stressors Now take a minute to think about the things that you either like the least (partners office ‘do’ perhaps) or that you always feel stressed by (buying and wrapping the gifts or cooking the Turkey for example). Then consider if they are things that you MUST do, often it’s easier to think what would happen if you didn’t do this. So would your partner be bothered if he, or you, missed the Christmas ‘do’? Would a prepared breast roast be just as good as a Turkey but less pressure? Again it is important to not just assume you MUST do these things, but rather, if they aren’t important to you then consider letting them go or changing them.
Consult or Not Depending on your role in a family, realistically some consultation will be necessary with other family memebers BUT if you are the person who ends up doing the work then in many ways you have the strongest position. Frankly if you cook the Turkey then surely it’s reasonable if it stresses you to change things a bit? Yes it is a time we want to think of others but that’s where the priorities are important. You could enjoy a great but simplified family dinner and actually everyone might enjoy it more if you were less stressed. If you want Christmas day on your own or with your immediate family then move larger gatherings to other days.
But the purpose is to be a bit creative, don’t let yourself just imagine exactly what happened last year, unless of course it was brilliant. If, say, as a young couple you just want to be on your own then that is possible, it might rock a few boats, it could even upset people BUT it is important to be honest about what your dream Christmas would be. Also we aren’t just talking about Christmas Day, for most folk there are several days of festivities.
Keep the Principles in Mind You are important and it is no use if everyone else has a great time but you are stressed and exhausted. Gifts may be an important part of the festivities for you BUT often what folk appreciate is the thought, not what it cost. There is NO ‘right’ Christmas – it is a time of celebration and good will BUT it should be enjoyable and if it isn’t OR if it leaves you exhausted and resentful then it is vital that some things change.
Define Priorities Bearing what you have just daydreamed about in mind, move on to think about the crucial elements of Christmas for you. Start by making a list of what you think the most important aspects of Christmas are for you. Maybe it’s the religious side of things, maybe it’s the food and social side, maybe it’s all the traditions, maybe it’s the family and, of course, it might be several aspects together. It doesn’t matter just note them all down.
Here’s to a Happy Healthy Christmas.

Winter Skincare Tips
N
ow the colder months are creeping in and we spend more time in the dark, the condition of our skin changes and needs more attention. It’s so important to adapt your skincare routine to suit the colder environment which will not only keep your body nourished, but also help hydrate the complexion for a winter glow. Kerry Fenton-Kent, Group Spa Manager for Aqua Sana Spas gives us a few helpful tips that she’s tried and tested to keep your skin, health and wellbeing on top form this winter… Avoid irritation from winter clothing Whilst wrapping up warm during the winter is important, the rough texture of fabric can irritate the skin – the biggest culprit is scarves. The skin on the back of your neck is slightly thinner than the rest of the body, meaning that the friction of the scarf material is likely to take away any moisture from the skin, leaving it dehydrated. Treat your neck with the same attention that you do with your complexion; cleanse thoroughly and moisturise.
Fill up on vitamins During the summer months we’re more inclined to eat more fresh fruit and salad but it’s just as important to load up on fruit and vegetables during the winter. This high intake of vitamins - which comes from fresh produce - to not only help prevent catching the common winter cold, but to also make sure your skin is looked after. One of the best fruits is pomegranates which are loaded with Vitamin C and K.
Sleep well You normally need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night to ensure that your skin, health and wellbeing are looked after. Whilst it can become difficult to get these required hours during the Christmas season as the office parties and late night shopping can occupy the diary, do your best to settle down for an early night as often as possible. When you wake, your skin will feel fresh and your mind calm, ready to tackle the day ahead. Aqua Sana, www.aquasana.co.uk

I

love children and remain in awe at the perceptive ‘take’ they can have on life. They just have that great knack of somehow making mistakes that become truer than the truth. I also love food of all types and although I elect not to eat meat I love fish BUT it must be cooked, so when I heard a small child in the supermarket ask his mother if she was buying ‘sushit’ again I thought he’d nailed it, from my perspective it’s a great description of raw fish wrapped in seaweed!
The worst though, was when he asked me solemnly after a discussion about birthdays, never good in my book, “Grandma are you old” I tried the whole it’s all relative business but relativity is a complex concept for a 5 year old, so eventually I just told him my age (young in grandma terms honestly) to which he replied with great ‘matter of factness’
There was a family myth that when my brother was a small boy, who liked the tune Mr Sandman, heard an adult mention the taxman – he asked earnestly if he sent you to sleep too? Well not strictly true perhaps, though doing the accounts certainly can, but he might well be responsible for the nightmares of many folks!
Thanks honey!!! I replied calmly that I hoped I would be alive long enough to see him have children – and after setting me straight that boys don’t have babies (I decided that it wasn’t the time for THAT conversation) so just accepted his correction with an expression that said ‘silly me’, he asked if it would make me a Grandma Great – well yes it would I guess!
“Oh – I expect you’ll be dying soon then!”
This year we had the pleasure of enjoying Halloween and trick or treating with our little grandson and at 5 he enjoyed the whole evening. He was dressed up and of course we had carved the pumpkin lantern to put outside our door to let others know they could call. We had a tin of ‘treats’ to offer callers, which he enjoyed giving out. But we also went out to knock on a few doors too and after a while he felt the need to check his understanding of this strange custom by stating
But children really come into their own at Christmas, and I’m sure any teacher could regale you with humorous tales of what children have said, and the nativity plays seem to be a great place for their wisdom. Everything from Franky Scents - “is that a bit like a Beckham fragrance?” to the questions about what a baby would do with gold “surely baby Jesus would have enjoyed a proper cot or a house instead of a stable?” A decent observation for a young child, but his older brother quickly retorted that a house or even cot would be hard to transport on a CAMEL. Not being outdone his younger sibling had a comeback “I meant a flatpacked one, like from IKEA, idiot!”
“So we have sweets that we give to people who come to our door?” he asked “Yes” I replied “They are the treats”
One mum I know had some serious straightening out to do when she asked her daughter who it was in the Manger of the Nativity play and realised she thought it was baby Santa Clause, before he bought his red suit and grew his beard!
“And we knock on other doors and get sweets from them?” “Yes” I replied, realising we were heading for shaky logical territory –
So as you enjoy the many strange Christmas customs we’ve all grown so fond of, you might want to take the advice of this young chap who had worked out why Santa was so fat
“So we could just stay at home and eat our sweets?” “Well yes! But it wouldn’t be nearly such fun” I said unconvincingly as I shivered in the cold!! Thankfully he didn’t mention the fact that we generally tell our children they must never accept sweets from strangers and as for knocking on strangers doors because they have a pumpkin outside – well its flawed logic at best.
“Well just think about it – a mince pie at EVERY house – I’m amazed he can even get down the chimney after the first hundred houses! Maybe we should leave a salad this year instead!” Or maybe not!

Hangover Help!
down, we then need to excrete the water down the toilet. The problem being, now our cells are lacking the water that they need. Our brain is around 70% water, and dehydration can lead to brain shrinkage, which is what causes the pain.‘ explains Shona Wilkinson, Head Nutritionist at www.nutricentre.com.
With the Festive Season well and truly upon us, there’s no doubt you’ll be socializing and partying just a little more than usual and this normally includes consuming rather large quantities of alcohol! As the saying goes ‘drinking alcohol is like borrowing fun from tomorrow’. Don’t we all know it too well? So what to do when you had one too many last night? Bloody Mary? Fry up? Pickle juice? Or maybe Yoga class? When it comes to hangovers, everyone has their favourite way of fighting it. We asked our Nutritionists to bust the myths and revel what really works ... just in time for the party season.
Why Does My Head Hurt So Much? Most of us have experienced the discomfort and frustration of alcohol hangovers. They are a pain in the ... well, head! ‘Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning that once in your blood your body needs to put its water supplies in your bloodstream to dilute it. This creates an increase in blood volume and pressure. To bring your blood pressure
Water, Water, Water! Water seems like the obvious cure, however not all water is equal. ‘The control of hydration is the hands of electrolytes, which are minerals found in water. For your best chance of beating that hangover, choose mineral rich water or add in some extra electrolytes that are designed for athletes and sports people. The water will also help to flush out the toxins, speeding up the detoxification process. Drink a large glass before going to bed and be sure to drink plenty in the morning. You can also try coconut water, which is naturally packed in electrolytes and minerals. 20

Fruit The water and mineral content of fruit will help to rehydrate you and put an end to your hangover headache. ‘There is an enzyme in pears that scientists are currently investigating for its ability to help us metabolize alcohol, and prevent us from having a hangover. If you’re going to eat fruit, it makes sense to choose a pear!’ advises Shona. If you are not a big fan of pears, go for berries. They are rich in antioxidants and offer protection from free radicals, which are considered another cause of hangovers. You can also top up your antioxidant levels by taking the right supplement. ‘The unique blend of organic whole foods in Nature’s Plus Ageloss Women’s Multi at: (www.revital.co.uk, £28.45) will help to replenish the vitamin and mineral loss after a night out of drinking. It will help to counteract the high free radicals production that your liver will release to detoxify the alcohol intake.
lost nutrients that your body used to detoxify the alcohol. Ideally choose eggs, because they are rich in cysteine, which is needed to break down acetaldehyde. Try a healthier cooked breakfast of poached eggs, green leafy vegetables, grilled tomatoes and wholegrain bread. Keep your energy up by having plenty of slow release carbohydrates from wholegrain and vegetables. Beans are a good source of fibre and folic acid, as well as protein to help with the body’s recovery. It is however better to avoid bacon and sausages. The nitrites in them will only add to the toxic burden on your body.
Hair of the dog As tempting as Bloody Mary sounds and looks, it is hair of the dog that bit you in the end. Drinking more alcohol will not help! It may initially take the edge off the pain, however it will, in the long run, only make it hurt more and last longer. It will dehydrate you further and give your liver more toxins to handle. And the hangover will come eventually anyway. Not a good idea! Activated charcoal It’s actually used in the treatment of some kinds of poisoning, because it absorbs toxins and helps them to be removed from the body. However, it would make sense to take the charcoal during or shortly after drinking alcohol rather than the next morning, as it binds toxins in the gut before they can be absorbed. Pickle Juice Yes, you heard right! The vinegar could be stimulating the liver to help detoxify and eliminate the alcohol. When pickles ferment, they also produce a certain type of soothing bacteria to help with irritated stomach.
Bone broth If you make your own broth or stock at home using animal bones, vegetables and a pinch or two of sea salt, you could do worse than drinking a cup or two of this the morning after. Bone broth contains lots of minerals that are naturally released from the bones during cooking – and these, together with the salt, could help to fight fatigue and boost your energy levels. The amino acids it contains can help to soothe the gut lining too.
Yoga You muscles are achy and – lets face it – it is very unlikely that you will go for a run or bike ride. How about Yoga then? The movement of yoga will help to increase blood flow to all parts of your body, but importantly, your liver. The more blood that passes through, the quicker your liver can detoxify the alcohol. The sweating will help to eliminate the toxins through your skin but it can make the problem of dehydration worse, so ensure that you drink plenty of water at the same time!
Eat before you drink Overall, it’s important that you do eat before drinking to slow the absorption of alcohol and additionally reduce the irritation that it causes to the stomach. Include healthy fats such as an olive oil dressing to slow absorption of alcohol, thereby slowing the work for your liver’ explains Wilkinson.
Fizzy Vitamin C Most of us crave a cold, fizzy orange drink on the morning after. Why? It is our body asking for Vitamin C. Vitamin C will help your body recover from the ingested toxins as it speeds up metabolism of alcohol by the liver. Even though drinking deletes Vitamin C in body tissues it can be easily replenished by having a fizzy Vitamin C that will also quench your thirst. Try new Effervescent Vitamin C by Quest Vitamins (www.revital.co.uk, £2.49)
No! No! No! Before, during and after drinking it’s best to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as alcohol consumption tends to play havoc with energy and blood sugar control. It’s better to focus on protein and unrefined carbohydrates, which release glucose slowly. Say no to caffeine and spicy food that can not only worsen the dehydration but also irritate your stomach.
Fry up Having a decent breakfast will help to replace some of the

Treatment of the Month
Murad Method Facial Healthy Skin is a reflection of overall wellness according to the philosophy of Murad the internationally renowned skincare brand, and with this in mind they have created the Murad Method Facial, which is available exclusively at Y Spa, Wyboston Lakes. How different can this be than any other facial? I hear you ask, so I went along to try it for myself.
massaged, making this not just a facial it is an actual pampering experience that leaves you rejuvenated and refreshed with the added bonus of the softest glowing skin ever.
From the moment I arrived at The Y Spa I knew this was indeed different, whilst relaxing in the spa waiting room, you fill in a 5 minute health and lifestyle questionnaire so that your therapist can analyse and customise the facial to suit your bodies needs.
One final point, before you leave the treatment your therapist gives you a menu card which informs you of all the products that were used, a couple of inspiring quotes and a delicious recipe card that again is tailored to giving your body the building blocks of better skin health. My recipe card was a ‘Hydrating Pomegranate Smoothie’ that I aim to have every morning, as it is developed to keep my skin hydrated and supple.
The facial begins with a relaxing ritual to soft calming music before a thorough cleanse, exfoliation and gentle steam ensures all grime and make-up are fully removed. Touch point massage techniques are used throughout, which help to relieve stress, giving you the ultimate experience in relaxation and mindfulness. A Vitamin C mask is then applied to my face, Alice my therapist warned me it would tingle a little, but it wasn’t unbearable. After that it was a relaxing process of different cleansing and moisurising rituals, finishing with an Age Diffusing Firming Mask and the most amazingly relaxing scalp massage which had me drifting off into the land of peace and tranquility.
Don’t just take my word for how amazing this treatment makes you feel, go and pay the Y Spa a visit and see for yourself. Murad Method Facial £70 for 50 minutes £85 for 80 minutes Y Spa, Wyboston Lakes 0333 7007 0667 www.yspa.co.uk

Chocolate Yule Log Method
Ingredients
butter, for greasing 5 eggs 140g light muscovado sugar 100g self-raising flour 25g good quality cocoa powder caster sugar, for dusting
Heat oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas 5. Butter and line the base and sides of a 30 x 35cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment. Separate the eggs, putting them into 2 large mixing bowls. Add the sugar and 2 tbsp water to the egg yolks. Using an electric whisk, whisk the sugar and yolks for about 5 mins until the mixture is light in colour and thick enough to leave a trail when the whisk blades are lifted. Sift in the flour and cocoa, then fold in lightly, using the whisk blades or a large metal spoon. Using a clean whisk, beat the egg whites until they are stiff, then fold into the cake mixture in 3 batches, again using the blades to preserve as much air as possible. Pour the mixture evenly over the prepared tin, then carefully spread to the edges. Bake for 10-12 mins, or until the cake feels firm to the touch. Put a large sheet of baking parchment on the work surface and sprinkle lightly with caster sugar. Turn the cake out onto the parchment and peel off the lining paper

Coconut Jam Bliss Balls
Ingredients
1 cup almonds 1 cup Medjool dates ¼ cup Coconut Merchant Coconut Jam ½ cup Coconut Merchant Desiccated Coconut Pinch of sea salt
Method
Start off by blitzing the almonds in your food processor until they reach a crumblike state, and then add in the dates. Blitz again until the dates and nuts are well combined. Then add the coconut jam. Form the mix into little balls by rolling them in your hands. Sprinkle some desiccated coconut onto a chopping board, and then roll the balls in it to coat the outside. Recipe by Niki Webster
Ingredients
Chocolate Bark
½ cup cacao powder ½ cup Coconut Merchant Coconut Oil 2-4 tablespoons Coconut Merchant Coconut Syrup The rest is up to you! Orange zest, a pinch of sea salt, berry powder – whichever you fancy! You can add a chew and a crunch by adding in some cacao nibs and goji berries as well as some chopped almonds and hazelnuts.
Method
Melt the coconut oil over a low heat in a pot. Mix the cacao powder and Coconut Merchant Coconut Syrup into the melted coconut oil, stirring until smooth and well combined. (Taste as you go along: you may need a bit more of one of the ingredients depending on your taste!) Add in your desired extras, and then pour onto a baking tray lined with greaseproof paper. Hit the base of the tray on your working surface to ensure the chocolate will set evenly, then simply pop in the freezer for 5 minutes (or fridge for 10 minutes!). Break up into shards, and enjoy! How to Rescue Christmas! A
number of situations may arise which result in your having to rescue Christmas at the last minute - extra work commitments, illness, relatives unexpectedly deciding to visit or you just being plain dilatory! Do not panic. You are not alone in this dilemma and you can rise to the challenge of some last minute strategies. A lot depends on how "last minute" it is, but remember, what is important at Christmas is goodwill, a festive atmosphere and lots of fun.
LISTS Essential for Christmas planning. Make a list for everything you have to do - Shopping - food, essentials, Christmas specials. Presents and cards. Home preparation. Important dates and deadlines. Jobs that can be delegated. Ticking off completed items is very satisfying and encouraging.
FOOD There are two easy options. You could try to make a last minute booking at a restaurant for Christmas lunch or do an internet search to purchase ready prepared Christmas meals to be picked up locally. Most of us have to do our "own thing" so make lists of all the meals and menus that you are responsible for. Make headings for your shopping- Christmas essentials, Christmas extras, usual groceries, general and personnel requirements and decide what can be purchased immediately and what are last minute groceries. As time is short it will help to get frozen and ready prepared items when possible. Aim to purchase as much as possible online so you will have to find a supermarket that still has delivery slots available. Make every attempt to avoid the last minute supermarket crush.

PRESENTS However short of time we are we do like to give presents at Christmas. Try to find a time when you can sit down and aim to complete an online present shop in one session short delivery times permitting! Gift vouchers from a departmental store are a good standby and tickets for shows and restaurant vouchers are always very acceptable. It is difficult if you are too late to acquire the children's desired items. Perhaps delegate friends and family to help and get a few surprises. New board games usually go down well. Always have some spare presents for the unexpected (or even forgotten) visitor - pot plants, Amaryllis bulbs, candles, wine, selection boxes for children. THE HOME The house does need a little attention before Christmas. If guests are coming to stay and time is really short, a cleaning agency may be a God send. You must make time to do a bit if festive decoratingChristmas tree , lights, holly and whatever the children can produce and help with. Do a safety check to ensure there are no accidents. Delegate as much as possible - setting the table, clearing the table, tidying up. YOU There is no point in doing a heroic last minute Christmas salvation if you feel and look a wreck! You will only have achieved 100% success if you feel good about yourself. Try to get adequate sleep. The better you rest the more efficient you will be when awake. Make time to ensure you are happy with your appearance, your hair and skin, clothes and accessories. Stay calm. Don't mention that it's all been a terrible rush(or even nightmare). Aim to appear relaxed. Refer frequently to your lists. Stay in control and be determined to make it a joyous occasion for your family, guests and yourself. Christine’s Christmas Countdown by Christine Ida Harrington (second edition published by Clink Street Publishing September 2015 RRP £4.99 paperback) is available to purchase online amazon.co.uk and from all good bookstores. 67

Fry’s Footie Corner
F
irstly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all Affinity readers a Happy Christmas. I hope you have a wonderful time! I am writing this page within seven days of the terrible, tragic events in Paris which saw 130 people lose their lives. It was obviously a massive shock to everyone but the way that sport reacted to the news and in particular, the way football dealt with the circumstances over the international break, made me feel proud.
England faced France in a friendly at Wembley Stadium within four days of the events in Paris. Every French player that stepped foot on the pitch deserve praise for the way they handled themselves and conducted themselves and I think that the FA deserve a lot of credit for the way they handled the whole situation. The English fans were encouraged join with the French fans in the singing of the National Anthem, the minute’s silence was impeccably observed and the floral tributes signified that football was united against terrorism. 69
We saw a number of games across Europe postponed due to security alerts and we live in a time where vigilance is vital, however, it is also important to recognise that we cannot let the terrorists win. Football can unify countries. It can bring people closer together. I for one, was proud to be English watching that game and I for one, believe that every fight can be won.

First stop and our base for 4 nights was the four-star Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa, a charismatic hotel incorporating grand pillars, quaint bridges and beautiful botanical gardens, all built within the volcanic mountains. The 500 rooms and suites are dotted about within the vast space, making sure this large resort still feels intimate and relaxed.
The Hotel’s Inagua Spa is a tranquil oasis of calm, with it’s steam bath (Hammam), sauna and themed showers all looking out onto the outside space, which simply takes your breath, away a secret haven of beautifully manicured gardens, punctuated with luxurious loungers and colourful flowers. If you only experience one thing at this spa make sure it’s the floatation pool, hidden from view by rocks and charged with magnesium salts, you literally just lie there and let your troubles float away. A full body massage followed, lights and soothing music set the mood for with just the right pressure and the added bonus of a scalp massage, I started to forget that I normally live a very busy, stressful life.

Sitting on the balcony watching the sunrise was the perfect start to the next day, which saw us visiting The Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia, which is just as Grand as its name suggests. Part of The Leading Hotels of the World, this 5* hotel in Maspalomas, is surrounded by palm trees and is an oasis of calm and tranquility with food that is exquisite and service that is impeccable. The spa here is a place of total harmony. A salt water pool heated to 30 degrees, a steam bath, sauna and salt cave all invite you to lie back and chill which is exactly what we did before I had the hotel spa’s signature ‘Singing Bowls Massage’. This is a massage that is based on sound, with towels covering my body and copper bowls being strategically placed on different chakra areas (front and back) my masseur uses a felt mallet to gently hit the bowls, which then create a ringing sound that vibrates and absorbs into my body flowing through the different areas. The sounds have a restoring effect, bringing clarity, relaxation and new energy to the body – I emerged from this treatment in a blissful calm, managing to float to a lounger outside to catch a few of the sun’s rays whilst waiting for hubby and his experience of the Pantai Luar, where his body was covered in warm oil and then massaged with heated fragrant herb bundles wrapped in cloth, creating a warm relaxing massage which triggered his bodies self repair mechanism, “an absolutely amazing treatment, like none I’ve ever experienced” – his words not mine.

Day 3 saw us heading into the remote hills where the 5* Sheraton Gran Canaria Salobre Golf Resort is located. An ultra modern hotel with panoramic views on all sides and hosting the islands best golf course, as well as a spa that is simply breathtaking in its design. The hotel itself has over 7 pools set out over 11 floors with the fete d’accomplice being on the 11th floor and known to guest as the “Sunset” Pool “ - an infinity pool with views over the landscape that simply take your breath away.
The “Aloe Spa” has all of the very best amenities, including a sauna, steam room and oxygen room (the only one in Gran Canaria) – but it was the outdoor space that I loved here, with Balinese beds perched precariously to get the best views, to the heated vitality pool that has a hydromassage area and bubbly beds, this is an ultimate haven of peace and tranquility where the rest of our day was spent enveloped within this seductive spa.

I was getting used to all this relaxation and pampering so the next day when my itinerary arrived and informed me that I was going to visit the ‘Get in Shape Pool Circuit’ at The Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel I started to panic, I don’t do fitness at the best of times, let alone in blazing hot sunshine. So it was with apprehension that we arrived at this hotel with swimming pools and bedrooms that face the ocean, open decks, bars, and lounges all built into the cliff and with the most stunning views of the ocean.
The jewel in this hotel’s crown is its Thalasso centre, offering seawater mineral treatments, which are said to be good for skin, respiratory and arthritic complaints.
Apprehensively (well I was apprehensive, hubby wasn’t, he likes a good workout) we made our way to the Thalasso, but how silly am I? The ‘Get in shape circuit`’ is nothing to do with fitness and all to do with that word again ‘Relaxation.’ You follow the circuit of warm seawater round and within the different sections are hydro massage points each concentrating on a different part of your body, including neck, shoulders, back, thighs, calves etc. The water jets onto your body leaving each part feeling massaged and relaxed – pure heaven…………..if only all workouts were like this! After such an energetic workout (who am I kidding!) it seemed only right to have a couple of final treatments, the first being an algae wrap which made me realize just how a turkey feels when we wrap it in foil – although I didn’t get eaten and my skin did feel wonderfully soft and silky, followed by a massage which really was the icing on the cake. There is no doubt you will leave Gran Canaria after a Spa and Wellness break with your mind and body feeling completely rejuvenated and revitalized, already planning when you can return again to this glorious wellness island! I
somehow we didn’t find time to fit either of these into our visit. We did however visit the Belfry and yes we climbed to the top to enjoy the lovely views over the rooftops.
One of the things that appealed to me was that it didn’t involve flying. I love flying but with just a 3 night break I didn’t want to spend time waiting in an airport and of course if we were buying presents I wanted to know that there were no luggage security restrictions that would mean we couldn’t bring them back or had to pay extra for a hold bag.
From there we wandered into the Burg, a medieval square, which we also visited in the evening when the lighting made it really atmospheric, and we also paid a quick visit to the Basilica of the Holy Blood. We finished the day off by sampling some of the local beers and then had mussels, a must really, cooked with garlic and cream and served with delicious bread and yes some frites! There were lots of restaurants and many had daily ‘specials’ – it was very easy choosing somewhere that looked really inviting, offered great choice and wouldn’t break the bank.
n the run up to Christmas it’s essential to do a bit of shopping, but before you let out a groan it is possible to combine this with having fun. We decided to do a pre- Christmas short break to Bruges, which gave us a lovely few days in a fabulous location AND we were able to do a substantial amount of our gift shopping knowing that any gifts we bought were not likely to be duplicated.
Bruges is known as the Venice of the North and was a leading city in the thirteenth and fourteenth century so it is steeped in history and full of cobbled streets and canals. So we simply went to St Pancras got on Eurostar, travelled to Brussels then got a connection to Bruges. As we only had small bags we actually took a bus, easy to spot, then walked to our hotel which was beautifully positioned by a canal, and we actually had the room with the circular window at the top. Well what you need after a journey is a hot chocolate, or coffee and a delicious Belgian pastry. We enjoyed this at one of the many cafes in the square in the old town and whetted our appetite for shopping and Christmas by looking at the market with its colourful stalls and outdoor ice rink. The old town is wonderfully picturesque and it is very compact so really easy to walk around, aside from the market the shops have the most wonderful window displays to enjoy as you wander. There are plenty of boat trips on the canal and also rides in the horse drawn carriages, though
The next day, after a lovely hotel breakfast and a scenic stroll along the canal we headed first to the Groeninge museum, full of Flemish art and as we were in the ‘culture mood’ followed it by (after some fine Belgian chocolate of course) a visit to the Memling which in addition to ‘art’ told the story of one of the oldest surviving mediaeval hospitals in Europe, I loved some of the gruesome old ‘medical’ instruments. A leisurely lunch, before starting to shop, first in the market but then wandering round the shops at a very slow pace enjoying all the magical displays, and noticing that even though it was now dark, the place was still vibrant. Another lovely meal, choosing food was never a problem in a city famous for frites, waffles and chocolate! In many ways when you are in Bruges it feels a bit like you are in a time capsule with its cobbled streets canals and wonderful quirky houses. The next day we had time for a last bit of shopping before heading, loaded with packages back to the station and onto the train, arriving back with happy memories and most of the Christmas shopping done.
