I took some much needed time out this month and spent the day and night at the newly opened Y Spa at Wyboston lakes – pure relaxation heaven – turn to page 14 to read all about it. In November we attended the Abba tribute night at the Sharnbrook Hotel as guests of Dominic Quirke (Advancing People). There were around 150 people there so you can imagine our delight when we walked in the room dressed in our Abba outfits all sequins, flares and platforms to find we were the only EIGHT people in the room dressed up!!!!! Did it matter? Of course it didn’t, we had a fantastic night and were presented with a bottle of champagne by Ciro (Sharnbrook Hotel’s General Manager) for being the best dressed there (Not sure that was the real reason; think it may be he felt sorry for us!) Thanks everyone for making it such a fabulous night! Finally, I want to raise a glass of bubbly to all my family, friends, readers and advertisers and wish them a wonderful Christmas and Thank You all for your support in 2012 – Merry Christmas! See you in 2013

Keeping a Calm, Balanced Mind over Christmas....Naturally
hristmas is fast approaching and whilst the anticipation and excitement is building, the added pressures and work involved in making Christmas a special festive celebration can soon bring stress, frayed nerves, lost tempers and irritation along with disappointment, frustration and depression. Whilst I don’t want to put a dampener on our main celebration of the year, I do believe it’s important to think of steps to minimize and cope with the added pressure so we can enjoy the festivities. Stress can be very different experience for everybody and our reaction will depend upon our natural constitution. So, when some of us are under pressure we will find our mind racing and unable to slow down and stop; our anxiety level will rise and insomnia may take hold. Or we may experience increased levels of frustration, irritation and criticism (both against ourselves and others), whilst others may start to feel lethargic, withdrawn and depressed. We all react and cope with stress in different ways. You may recognise these traits in different members of your family, which makes for a very tricky balancing act within any gathering which is meant to be a joyful and happy celebration.
fall asleep in the afternoon. This will result in feeling more sluggish, lethargic and depressed. Eat a simple diet. We have such a complicated diet over Christmas that our digestive system becomes overwhelmed and, in working overtime, makes us feel lethargic and depressed. This in turn may lead to a panic response and a detox in January ‐ not the ideal time to detoxify the body. Have some light vegetarian meals interspersed with the larger and richer meals we associate with Christmas. Nourishing lentil soup with root vegetables or butternut squash for example will lighten the load on an overtaxed system. But keep it warm and light and do not eat cold or leftovers. Eat more spicy, bitter and astringent foods to counteract the heavy and sweet treats which we indulge in over Christmas and bring a natural balance to our diet. Drink regular cups of ginger and chamomile tea to both calm your nerves and as an aid to digestion.
How to help minimize the stress and maximise the enjoyment of Christmas :
Keep acidic foods to a minimum, such as vinegar, pickles, citrus fruits (except limes which are alkalising), lots of refined sugar and excess alcohol. Add spices into the diet ‐ cumin, cardamom, fennel and coriander. Dill and parsley all taste wonderful, and add an extra dimension to our diet and improve our digestion.
Have an early morning walk, breathing deeply to take in the fresh air. This will be instantly calming, give an energy boost, clear away the cobwebs and set you up for the day. If this walk can be by water, all the better, as you’ll be amazed how calming and restorative it can be. Don’t be tempted to lie in and resist the temptation to
These are just a few ideas to keep calm and enjoy Christmas. However, if stress has become a chronic problem and you sense a deeper imbalance, there are numerous remedies available and Naturopathy and Ayurveda can offer a holistic and natural approach to help restore a calm mind and joyful heart.

As Christmas party season gets into full swing we all want to look gorgeous so what could be easier than sexy seductive pin up eyes, a dark, defined lash line that elegantly sweeps up into a feline shape.
Affinity Magazine_Layout 1 copy 15/11/2012 10:08 Page 11
Eyes Have Flick Get the Look: Gently pull your lid upward so you can see its inner rim. Line the rim with a few coats of jet‐black waterproof pencil. Then line the inner rim of your lower lash line. Use the same pencil to line the skin directly above your upper lash line. Blend colour into lashes with an angled brush. Layering liquid liner over pencil is the key to a stay‐put look— the liquid dries and locks in the first layer of colour. With a black liquid‐liner pen make four evenly spaced dashes over the pencil line, and connect them. To create the winged‐out edge. Close your eye, and trace a finger along your upper lid’s crease, moving outward. When it meets the bony part of your eye, mark the spot with a dot of liquid liner. Place the tip of the liquid‐liner pen on the dot, and drag it to the outer corner of your eye, thickening the line as you go Once the liner has dried, dab your lid with a cream coloured liquid shadow, then place a metallic version on the area just above your crease line and inner corner. Like creams, liquids catch light but stand up better to the heat. Finish with two coats of black mascara.

Simply Stunning
I
magine how wonderful it would be to discover a place where time slows down, where you can completely relax in tranquil surroundings and escape from the world outside, even if just for a little while simply indulging yourself with ME time.
She then proceeded to cleanse and tone before gently massaging different areas of my face. The therapists' movements were incredibly light and gentle, stroking touches which delivered very effective massage without feeling rough or uncomfortable.
Well you don’t have to imagine anymore we have found just the place ‐ the newly opened luxurious Y Spa at Wyboston Lakes.
I was given a wonderful hand and arm massage whilst a peel‐off mask was on my face. The whole treatment was 70 minutes of complete escape, letting all my tensions slip away and left me feeling completely rejuvenated.
We were invited for a complete day of pampering and relaxation and that is exactly what we got. We were made to feel special from the minute we arrived and all through the day we were spoilt with attention. It was a complete escape from everyday life and the staff at Y Spa made sure we were totally immersed with 5* hospitality. From the moment we arrived and were shown into the modern fully equipped luxurious changing rooms to change into our fluffy robes and slippers, we were made to feel special. Once in robes we were taken upstairs to wait in the pre treatment room ‐ a tranquil relaxing area with dim lights, plump cushions, furry throws and the most amazing aroma coming from the candles lit all around the room. It is the finishing touches that make you realise this is no ordinary spa : from the bottles of water to the luxury magazines. The treatment rooms are a continuation of the same luxurious concept, creating a haven of peace and tranquillity. They create an ambience of calm before your treatment even begins. The therapists are dedicated to making every touch count, and there is an extensive list of treatments to serve and pamper you in stylish luxury. My first treatment was an ‘Elemis Pro Collagen Quartz Lift Facial’ a new anti‐wrinkle facial with immediate results, it uses powerful mineral ingredients and unique facial massage techniques to help lift and firm the skin. My therapist started the treatment with a mini foot massage (as I said before it is the finishing touches that make this spa unique) this is to get you used to her touch and to start your whole relaxation time – a foot massage is given before every treatment whether it’s a body or face treatment.
An ‘Elemis IQ Facial’ was my husband’s choice of treatment ‐ the ultimate skin overhaul for maximum anti ageing results. He commented on how lovely the foot massage was at the beginning and his therapist made him feel completely relaxed so much that he fell asleep! After our treatments we spent a little time relaxing in the pre‐treatment room, before indulging ourselves with the rest of the facilities the Y Spa had to offer. Y Spa has created a fabulous space which aims to stimulate all of the senses. This luxury allows you to use hot and cold experiences as therapy, the benefits of which are far reaching. There is ‘Steam’, ‘Soft Sauna’, ‘Salty’, and for those of you who like it HOT there is ‘Kelo’ ‐ a sauna within a hundred year old log cabin, located outside overlooking the hydrotherapy pool ‐ pure heaven. Moving outside is the hydrotherapy pool far warmer than a swimming pool, in fact it is like a relaxing warm bath. This is the place to relax and let the bubbling water indulge your body, and we did just that! The outside space has big comfy sofas to chill on whilst the outdoor fire kept us warm whilst sipping champagne and eating cupcakes – paradise! Back inside there is the chill zone, where you can choose between the gentle cooling mist shower or the more invigorating glacier shower. You can journey to the frost wall and smooth ice crystals directly onto your body – it has to be done! If all this has exhausted you then head to the relaxation areas where you can drift away on the ergonomic loungers with warm snuggle blankets with a fireplace and

selection of books and magazines, or catch up on the gossip in the time out area with a glossy magazine or curl up and finish a chapter or two of your current read. Tucked away behind opulent curtains is the waterbed area ‐ here the waterbeds are warmed to body temperature where you can relax and dream all you want. After experiencing all these areas, and I have to say each area was unique, I felt completely in another world. Then we headed off for our two course lunch. A delicious range of dishes to choose from all washed down with a glass of chilled wine made sure the whole luxury pampering experience carried on even into lunch. Lunch finished, we explored the Spa again enjoying all the above and realising what complete bliss it all was before heading into the Spa Café for afternoon tea. There is a vast tea menu, all the cakes are freshly homemade and are absolutely delicious. We had one more treatment each to end our day, (a day that had seen us completely spoilt) ‘An Elemis Hot Stone Massage’ and ‘An Elemis Deep Tissue Massage’ ‐ again attention to detail was perfect. The whole experience for me was pure relaxation, the heat from the stones was slowly released into my muscles for a completely new body experience. Small stones were placed on key energy points whilst my therapist massaged luxurious warmed oils into my body. I felt so relaxed and calm I didn’t want the treatment to end. I wandered off to find David and found him sleeping like a baby on the heated waterbed. His verdict on his deep tissue massage “One of the best I have ever had!” The Y Spa’s motto is “A bene placito” which means “At one’s pleasure” and we certainly indulged in pleasure during our whole time there. The Y Spa is somewhere I recommend everyone tries at least once and I can guarantee once you have spent a day there you will go back time and time again ‐ it is pure heaven!

treatment is completed by your chosen shade of OPI nail polish to transform your battered feet! A delicious two course lunch followed before we relaxed some more on the dreamy water beds flicking through glossy magazines, drifting in and out of dreamland before reluctantly forcing ourselves to venture to the relaxation lounge for our second treatment.
That is why Y Spa have introduced their Beautiful Bump Day a day that is all about the expectant mother, making her feel amazing and allowing her to take some time out to think about herself. The day includes: 2 course lunch, use of Thermal Spa facilities, Y Spa Blooming Marvellous Body Therapy and Y Spa Botanical Foot Therapy.
The Blooming Marvellous face and body therapy is a combination treatment that offers a full consultation followed by a cleansing and nurturing facial and massage to the head neck and shoulders. This completely relaxes you before the therapist concludes with a soothing application of skin support products to leave you feeling blooming marvellous!
I went with my daughter, who is seven and a half months pregnant, for her to experience this day and see if it did what it said on the tin! We arrived and were greeted by the staff who were lovely as usual. After filling in the usual consultation forms, we were taken into the changing rooms to change into our luxury robes and slippers.
Treatments over and feeling completely relaxed and rejuvenated, as well as having immaculately groomed and painted pinkies, my daughter was returned to the Relaxation Room, where she said she could have stayed all afternoon.
We spent an hour enjoying the spa facilities and then went up to the Relaxation Lounge before being collected by the therapist and taken off for the first treatment. There is no better time for a pedicure in a woman's life than when she is nearly eight months pregnant. Such contortions would be required if you tried to paint your own toenails that you'd end up with a Picassoesque paint job, and anyway, it's your feet that take the brunt of all that extra weight you're carrying around.
Although utterly wonderful, pregnancy really does take its toll on our bodies and sometimes a little time out and a whole lot of pampering is just what the doctor ordered. If you're an expectant mummy looking for a treat, Y Spa at Wyboston most definitely gets our seal of approval. I can honestly say my daughter had the most wonderful experience ever. So go on treat yourself you know you deserve it!
With the Botanical foot therapy your feet are pampered incorporating the sumptuous botanical extracts and hydrating properties of OPI's pedicure range. Feet are soothed, scrubbed and hydrated and a mask is applied for the ultimate treat. After a foot massage which is a real treat for feet that have to bear the extra strain, the

Up do glamour An up do is a great way to show off detailing on a dress or a gorgeous necklace. Channel, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn all showed the elegance of an up‐do ‐ what impact!
How to get the look... Vintage Curls
• Make hair look its best by washing with Aussie Miracle Shine Shampoo & Conditioner. • Section two front pieces of hair, then split the remaining hair into two. You can do this easily by drawing a line with your fingers from ear to ear. • Take the top half of the sections and backcomb the underneath to create some volume. Hairspray and then smooth over the top to give a chic finish. • Curl the bottom section and twist up into a chignon; curl any pieces that are left out and pin randomly. • Take the two front sections and place behind the ear, pinning into the bottom section of hair. • Finish with a strong hold hairspray, TRESemme Freeze Hold Hairspray will make sure your up do doesn’t let you down.
Think stars of the past, Veronica Lake, Marilyn Monroe. Both beautiful ladies who wore their hair with high‐ octane glamour and confidence. A fantastic party look for those with medium length or longer hair. • Give your hair a volume boost by using Lee Stafford Double Blow Mousse, applied first on damp hair, and then again on dry, it’s oomph in a tin. And great value! Section into a deep side parting and blow dry. • Once your hair is completely dry grab some tongs, we love Enrapture Totem Styler as you can adjust the temperature in different sections of the tong. Curl towards your face to give you a 1950’s screen‐siren look. Make sure each curl looks like a pigs tail. Don’t worry about it looking too cutesy‐child‐star at this stage! • Once the entire head is curled, leave to cool completely. Give your hair a spray with a flexible hold hairspray, Osis Elastic Flexible Hold Hairspray is great, and smells lovely. • Take a soft bristle brush, and gently brush through the curls. This should make them join and become softer, sexier waves. • Finally, if you want to really finish the look, take a bejewelled clip and add to the opposite side of your parting, just past your ear. Give your hair another squirt of hairspray and you are ready to go!
If you have shorter hair you can give the illusion of hair up by adding a bun ring, or hairpiece. No one will ever know!
Top Tips for Festive Styling • Why not add a necklace or pretty brooch to your hair? It’ll add interest to a hair do and festive parties are definitely time for added bling. • Invest in some new hair grips to make sure they are tight and able to hold your hair. Get yours that blend with your hair to help cover up any visible pins. • Do you find your hair slips out of styles and is difficult to control? Use a little texturizing powder or dry shampoo to give hair ‘grip’
Worried about your curl dropping out before the night is over? Pin the original ringlets up whilst you are getting ready and brush through just before leaving the house.

Ski training know at the this time of year you would expect me to write about how to avoid weight gain over the Christmas period but I thought since every other magazine will be writing about this, I’d give you some top tips for winter ski training instead!
Skiing is a fabulous, exhilarating sport but it is just that, a SPORT and should be taken seriously or injury can easily occur. One third of all ski injuries are knee related, ranging from minor bruising to torn ligaments. A pre‐season ski program should consist of cardiovascular, flexibility, balance and agility exercise and should also include plyometric/explosive training. The cardio training ideally needs to start as soon as you book your trip. These cardio workouts can be anything that gets your heart rate up to a slightly uncomfortable level but where you can still maintain conversation (around 60‐70% of your maximum heart rate) this can be done by walking, jogging, cycling, and swimming, anything that elevates your heart rate. This should be
Every year thousands of us hit the slopes for a bit of winter ski therapy but unfortunately there are many injuries to be had on those slippery slopes. Let’s avoid being a statistic and prepare our bodies for the slopes........ I’m sure you have all the equipment you need, new skis, new coats, gloves, sun visors and new boots ... you feel ready, but is your body really ready?

It would be a great idea to include some anaerobic (literally meaning without oxygen) into your cardio training, as there will be moments on the slopes where you can’t catch your breathe. Do this by adding in some sprints for 30‐60 seconds then ease back down to your normal pace ‐ do this 5 times.
change direction AND help you balance better. Exercises such as the plank, oblique twists and side planks will all help to strengthen your core. The next component, and usually the most forgotten, is flexibility. Tight muscles are unhappy muscles. It’s important you have flexibility in your hip flexors (the muscles that run across the front of your hip), your hamstrings, your calves, gluteals (bottom) and core muscles, in particular your lower back. A good flexibility program can be performed up to 5 times per week and should be done when your body is warm. An ideal time would be after your workout when your muscles are at their most pliable. Static stretches for 20‐30 seconds will be ideal.
The next training component is strength and stability. Throughout your ski trip you will undoubtedly feel muscles you’ve not felt for a while but the last thing you want is to be is in agony for the first 3 days of a 5 day trip. So you need to condition your muscles accordingly. It’s obvious you need strong legs for skiing but it’s also imperative you condition your core and upper body too. A strong core will help with balance and agility and could, in a worse case scenario, save you from a rather nasty fall.
The final component of your pre‐season training will be explosive training. This is not to be done until you have done a strength program and are competent at it for at least 6 weeks. Your explosive program should include plyometric exercises which are jumping, bounding, and leaping, sprinting style exercises. These exercises have a powerful take off and a controlled landing ‐ much like that on a ski slope. It is designed to improve reaction time and co‐ ordination of fast movements, which in turn should make you a better skier.
All your exercises need to work in different planes of motion; Frontal (side‐ to‐side), Sagittal (front‐to‐back) and Transverse (rotational), there are thousands of exercises that can be performed but a few of my favourites are: Squats ‐ using weighted bar or dumb bells, lunge in different directions and dead lifts as these strengthen the lower back too. You can also start to incorporate stability training devices such as the stability ball (also known as a Swiss ball) or a Bosu ball (a half ball). The instability of these pieces of equipment make your stabilising muscles work harder, so that they are more conditioned for the slopes. Core work is essential, as I mentioned earlier, it could save you from some unpleasant injuries should you fall but it can also help increase your speed and ability to
The first thing to do now is work out how much time you have until you hit the slopes and how much time you can commit to training. Write it down ‐ what you’re going to do and when, then STICK to it. You don’t want to regret not doing anything on the first day of your holiday. Better to have a bit of sweat and tears now than blood and tears on the slopes!

Affinity Magazine_Layout 1 copy 15/11/2012 10:14 Page 35
n the picturesque village of Turvey is Ye Three Fyshes, a beautiful country pub offering homemade food using locally sourced ingredients. The menu boasts dishes that have a modern take on traditional pub fayre. We visited Ye Three Fyshes on a cold November evening and were welcomed by a roaring log fire that made the evening very cosy and romantic. We were spoilt for choice between the menu and the daily specials board. Decisions were finally made ‐ a trio of potted seafood (potted trout, prawns and smoked salmon) served with sun dried tomato bread was my choice, the flavours were delicious and the dish very impressive. Sweet chilli prawn kebabs on mixed leaves were my husband David’s choice. There was a generous portion of succulent prawns and the sweet chilli had a slight kick that went really well with this dish. Our main courses didn’t disappoint either. Game casserole with shallots and red wine gravy was David’s dish; the rich flavours of the different meats combined were very appetising, the red wine gravy complimented the meat beautifully. My choice was supreme of chicken with ricotta and fresh herbs, wrapped in smoked bacon in an oyster mushroom sauce ‐ this was delicious, the sauce was slightly creamy with a sweet taste that flattered the succulent chicken perfectly. Here we are again ... dessert time and I can’t possibly fit one in, can I? Well how can I write a review if I don’t taste the desserts? So with much persuasion (ha ha) I opted for what looked like the lightest dessert on the menu, homemade winter berry meringue. The presentation of this was perfect and the taste exquisite, as was David’s homemade spotted dick with creamy custard ‐ the pudding was soft and light and the custard really was creamy. The whole meal certainly didn’t disappoint. The food was delicious, the atmosphere warm, relaxing and friendly, somewhere I would thoroughly recommend visiting whether it’s with family, friends or just the two of you, once visited I am sure you will keep returning time and time again, I know I will!

Christmas Fizz Lanson Rosé Label NV 50 years after it was first produced Lanson Rose is still one of the most sought‐after and consumed rose champagnes in the world. It is the ideal accompaniment to white meats and fresh fruit desserts. £26.99 Sainsburys
Recipe
Dom Perignon Champagne The first hints of fresh almond and harvest aromas immediately open up into preserved lemon and dried fruits, the whole rounded off by darker smoky and toasted qualities. The presence of the wine on the palate is immediately captivating. Paradoxically concentrated yet creamy, it is energetic and warm in the mouth, focusing on the fruit, then gradually taking on more profound bass notes. The whole holds its note perfectly, intensively, with just a subtle, elegant hint of underlying bitterness.
Prepare the stuffing. Heat the butter and oil in a large frying pan, soften the onion for approx ten minutes without colouring. Put in a bowl and then add the pancetta or bacon to the pan, fry for 5 minutes until golden, then add the pine nuts, garlic, sage and lemon zest. Fry for 1 minute until fragrant and the pine nuts are starting to brown. Stir in the chopped parsley. Tip into the bowl with the onions, then bind together with the crumbs, egg and seasoning. Season and butter a sheet of turkey foil. Put five long pieces of string over the foil like rungs of a ladder, ready to tie the breast together. On top of the string arrange the pancetta or bacon in a lattice over the middle of the foil. Open out the butterflied breast, skin‐side down, and slash each side several times. Cover with cling film and bash with a rolling pin until the meat is about 5cm thick all over. Trim the sides so that you have a roughly rectangular shape (but be careful not to cut the skin). Lift onto the pancetta, and then fill any gaps with the trimmings. Season, and press the stuffing along the middle of the joint. Pull up the sides at one end, tucking in the short end, and tie the string tightly so that the stuffing is enclosed. Repeat with all the strings. Wrap up tightly in the foil; turn the roll over so that the pancetta is on the top. If you need to it can be left in the fridge for up to 2 days. Heat oven to 190C (Fan)/Gas 5. Put the joint in a roasting tin and roast for 40 minutes per kg or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out very hot and the juices run clear. Uncover for the last 10 minutes of cooking. Lift the joint onto a board and leave to rest, covered, for at least 10 minutes. For the gravy, heat the tin on the hob, then add the wine and any juices. Reduce by half, then add the stock and repeat. Pour in the cream and bubble to slightly reduce the sauce. Season to taste, then stir in the parsley.

Yule Log Ingredients
Method
30g/1oz plain flour 30g /1oz cocoa powder 3 large eggs, separated 110g/4oz caster sugar 2 drops almond essence
Preheat the oven to 180C/350 Gas 4. Grease a 23 cm x 33 cm Swiss roll tin and line with baking parchment.
For the butter cream filling: 100g /3½ oz butter 150g/5oz icing sugar 100g dark chocolate splash brandy or rum caster sugar for, dusting cocoa powder, for sifting
This sweet is brought to you by the Chef at The Millhouse Hotel Riverside Restaurant Sharnbrook
To make the sponge: sift the flour and cocoa together and set aside. Sprinkle a large piece of greaseproof paper with caster sugar and set aside. Put the egg whites in a clean bowl and whisk until frothy. Place the sugar in a bowl with the egg yolks and whisk until pale and thick, add the almond essence. Using a large metal spoon stir in the reserved flour and cocoa mixture. Finally, lightly fold in the egg whites until well blended ‐ take care not to beat the air out of the mixture. Spoon the mixture into the Swiss roll tin and level the top. Bake for 15‐20

minutes or until sponge‐like to the touch. Turn the sponge onto the greaseproof paper dusted with caster sugar. Peel away the baking parchment and roll the sponge with the greaseproof paper inside. Leave to cool. For the Butter cream: Beat the butter in a mixing bowl until smooth and then gradually beat in the icing sugar and melted dark chocolate. Add the brandy and mix well. Once the sponge has cooled unroll it carefully and spread it with half the filling and roll it up again (without the greaseproof paper this time). Spread the rest of the filling over the cake to cover it. Score it with a fork to resemble a log and dust with cocoa powder. Decorate with a sprig of holly.

Empty Nest Syndr me After 20 odd years your children leave home – aah, peace and quiet, no mess, and job done. So why do most of us feel so sad?
succession of abandoned rooms where only the dust is standing still.
friend of mine gave me the inspiration to write this article when she uttered the words “I’m lonely, I don’t really know what life’s about anymore I miss being a mum to my kids!” my heart broke for her and I realised this would be me one day.
In theory we should be cheering and inside, in a very small place for which, momentarily, we seem to have misplaced the key, we are ecstatic – deserving a pat on the back for a job well done, raising kids, surviving for many of us the demons of divorce and depression, seeing our children safely and successfully off into the world and finally able to call our clothes our own!
The nest of family love is like a nest of birds. When it’s the right time to fly, the young will fly away, as is the way of life. For some people, especially for the primary caregiver, this can be a time of great emptiness and sadness that can easily tip into depression if unheeded.
Let’s look at our life now they’ve flown the nest. The laundry will only belong to us, folded and put away the minute it's dry. There will be no dirty dishes in the sink. There will be odd cups drying on the draining board instead of a dozen growing mould under the bed. The bedrooms will have carpets instead of messy mountain ranges of "nothing to wear". There will be no half‐full glasses; no odd shoes hiding in a huddle under the bed, and the sheets will always match the pillowcases.
After more than two decades in which you hardly have a second's privacy and where, since your kids became teenagers, you haven't even been able to call your clothes your own (if you have a daughter in the family); the youngest of your brood heads off to university/college. For the first time in 20 plus years there will be no more "us", no more "we", and no more "ours'. It will just be you – wandering through a

When make‐up is put down it will still be there next day, and the conditioner will be on the side of the bath instead of upside down in the shower, dripping down the plug hole! There will be no towels dropped like a starlet's knickers on the floor.
You can finally do all the things you’ve wanted to do and once the house is tidy, the fridge is full of the food and drink you want to indulge in, you can look back over the last few decades full of kids and look forward to the next decade without them in it – except children are a little like boomerangs they keep coming back!
So why do we feel a crushing sense of grief? Motherhood is viewed as a primary role for both working and stay‐at‐home mums, and a role to which women dedicate themselves as a principal responsibility for an average of 20 years. A child leaving can precipitate a feeling of redundancy, accompanied by feeling lost, unworthy, and unsure about the future. Feeling sad and crying a little is a normal, healthy reaction to be expected of any parent; after all, it is a big change. Try to look on the bright side, the milk won’t go off because it’s not been put back in the fridge, and at night you can do and cook what you want instead of making their ‘favourite’ only to be told they have decided to turn vegetarian! You never have to hide the chocolate biscuits again (unless from yourself!) You can drink wine and nobody will say “it’s only 5 o’clock!”
Empty nest syndrome affects principally women, producing grief when one or more of the children leave home. Research shows that the transition from being an actively involved mum to being an independent woman again takes around 18 months to two years. This means that it's vital to allow yourself the time to grieve, work through the loss, and rebuild your life is important. Be gentle on yourself and the expectations that you have. Keep yourself busy and enjoy your new life. Yes, the house is quiet now. Almost too quiet, but you will get used to it in time. Don't be so afraid of your future. Grow your own wings and fly in new directions.

New Year New You here is always a sense of optimism about New Year. Just like there is with the first flowers of spring, a birth, a new home or new relationship. New means full of possibilities – how it will turn out we never know, but there is always the hope that the next new thing will be the one that brings a change of fortune and lasting happiness.
There will always be a few things we can’t change ‐ if you are 5ft 3in and have always wanted to be 5 ft 8in then wearing high heels is about the most you can physically do, Usually there are also some things we can change but not perhaps right now, even when actively looking for a new job it can take a while to find one. But it is very easy to get into a mindset of putting up with things that may make us miserable and telling ourselves we can’t change anything. It is also true that even for the things we can’t change, perhaps aspects of the job or needing to support other family members we CAN change our attitude to these situations and that in itself can bring about huge changes in how we feel.
Hopefully many of us are very happy with our lives and are generally getting where we want go, but when the clock strikes 12 there are probably still a few secret hopes about what the coming year will bring. It is all too easy to think in very vague terms about what we want and ‘wish’ for ‘things’ but actually the reality is that barring an unexpected windfall or some chance encounter things will only change if we change them.
This simple visualisation technique can help you focus on the things you really want to achieve and it really doesn’t take long. So give yourself fifteen minutes sometime and try it out.

WHAT DO I WANT • Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed • Take a few deep breaths counting in for 5 out for 5
new one. If you know you need further training to do the job you really want to do, you could resolve to at least investigate courses on offer in the locality or even on the internet. If your desire is to travel you could start saving. If your children’s behaviour is getting you down you could seek some advice or help.
• Think briefly about your life as it is now • Picture yourself in your life as it is now – it’s often helpful to picture yourself in each of your different life spheres, (job, study, family, friends, sport or whatever). Then think about how you would like your life to be in each of these areas. • You need to feel ‘open’ to this – it’s not a practical consideration of what can be different, it is about you giving your dreams and desires a chance to come to the surface. • If you find yourself imagining something then dismissing it ... stop ... and try again another time. • If you are limiting your thoughts so much that you can’t even imagine what you want then a few changes in mind set are needed!!
For lots of people there are a few things (often really only a tiny few) that can’t be changed but many more that people THINK they can’t change. The ‘what if’ exercise can help you distinguish between what can’t and what can be changed, but would have some undesirable consequences. Some of those consequences may mean that you make a decision NOT to change that, but that is quite different from feeling you are powerless in the situation.. Immediately if it becomes your choice and your decision you will FEEL more empowered and in control because you will be more empowered and in control. WHAT IF Think of something that you feel ‘stuck’ with or unable to change. Imagine that for some reason you did change it.
• But if not then allow yourself to ‘see’ or visualise YOUR life as YOU want it. • Then stop and capture those images. • There are different ways of using this exercise but at its’ simplest level it’s a glimpse of the future you could have. • Armed with that glimpse it should then be possible to think clearly about what the first step may need to be to bring about some real changes in your life. This exercise can form the basis for several sessions, looking at different aspects of your life but savour the dream of how your life could be – so often we don’t change because inside we really don’t think we can, but in most cases that is simply not true. The next step is to think about one or two aspects of your ‘dream life’ and decide to do something about it. So if you are sick of your job you could resolve to look for a
What would the consequences be? For any undesirable consequence is there anything you could do to minimise the impact of these? “Sally hated her job but it was well paid and secure and as she was a single parent she had to support her family but she was working long hours and seeing little of her children. After considerable thought she handed in her notice and took a job more locally. I saw her several months after she had made the change and she told me that money was in much shorter supply but she felt it had been the right decision as she was more relaxed and able to spend more time with her children.” So when ‘Auld Lang Syne’ is sung this year if you are unsure of your resolutions, start by resolving to allow yourself some time to think about what you want your life next year to ‘look like’ and then resolve to start making some changes.

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. Living in Bedford she is married to The Husband and together they have 4 children, Rafferty, 7, Violet, 5, Roman, 4 and baby Clementine. All my views are my own and are not intended to offend anyone but alas I may frustrate you as I certainly do myself and no doubt those around me at times. I would love to hear from you, your views, questions or indeed just to share your experiences of trying to be a Yummy Mummy. Email me at info@affinitymag.co.uk
Ding Dong Merrily on High! s I write this there are only 44 sleeps until Christmas and our household is a very excited one because we love Christmas, but I’m not sure who is more excited – me or the children!! Once Rafferty’s and Violet’s birthdays are over in early November, then all focus shifts to the festive season!
to spend the whole day at home so the children can enjoy their gifts and of course we open our door to most people!! The morning starts with the children on our bed opening their stockings which usually consist of pants, socks, and pyjamas but they are ‘fun’ ones with their favourite characters on, a couple of little toys, a toothbrush and a big tube of chocolate or sweets! One year Roman, being the first one up, came into our room for a cuddle after walking straight past his stocking as he forgot it was Christmas day! The look on his face when we told him was priceless – one of the many reasons that makes Christmas so special! Mummy and Daddy get a stocking too as why would Santa forget us?! During this time, one of us will sneak down and turn on the Christmas lights so the lounge is all set for when they go downstairs to see what Santa has left – well if he has been, as from September onwards we repeatedly tell the children they better be good as he is watching!
I have always liked Christmas but since becoming a Mummy I absolutely love it! I am the youngest of four children so as I got a bit older, although we still had nice Christmases and of course presents, it wasn’t quite as magical. Therefore, I wanted to ensure that my children would continue to experience the magic no matter their age, so the Husband and I decided we would introduce our own annual traditions and will keep adding to them from our children’s suggestions. The first weekend in December is when we put the tree up and for me the annual Baileys is opened, served in a tall glass with a dash of Cointreau with loads of ice – it is delicious! A Harry Potter or Christmas movie is put on and we do it late afternoon so the lights look great (and any earlier might be a bit wrong to start drinking – we save that for Christmas day itself!!)
Breakfast is always bacon and egg butties, well it is a day of indulgence! But we always go for a walk as it is good to let the children get some fresh air and for me not to feel quite as guilty after breakfast! Walking on Christmas Day is always a delight – everyone is so friendly and will always greet you with a ‘Merry Christmas’. Back home the Bucks Fizz is cracked open as dinner is prepared – we do love a massive roast – whilst watching Christmas Top of the Pops. We have a late dinner as afterwards all we do is relax on the sofa watching Christmas television and of course with a large Baileys!
A while before the big day we always get the children to pick out three toys they no longer play with for them to give to charity, as not everyone is as lucky as them, and we always start the present giving at teatime on Christmas Eve with just the six of us to exchange little gifts we have for each other. When Rafferty was two he decided I should make pancakes for Christmas Eve tea so that is now another tradition.
Whatever you are up I would love to wish you a very Merry Christmas and see you all in January – when I have to work off all that food and drink! Have a good one! x
We always wake up in our own home as even though Santa is magic, we don’t want to make it harder for him by having to deliver to a different address! We also like

A little bit of Sparkle
his Christmas there’s going to be a ball as Cinderella comes alive on the Milton Keynes Theatre stage. Everyone's favourite TV personality Louie Spence (ITV's Dancing on Ice, Sky TV's Pineapple Dance Studios and Louie Spence's Showbusiness) heads a sensational cast as the Prince's loyal and slightly outrageous servant, Dandini. And his fans won’t be disappointed. They can look forward to Louie’s cheeky gags and high spirits along with the glitziest Dandini you’ve ever seen! Louie’s unique personality and in‐your‐face delivery made him perfect for television and the ideal choice for panto!

We met up with Louie pre rehearsals and he told us “I’m really looking forward to coming to Milton Keynes, I did the same show last year in Manchester and I wouldn’t have done it again unless it was a great show – and believe me it really is.” “We broke box office records when we were in Manchester so let’s hope we can do the same here at Milton Keynes. It’s a great family show and Cinderella is the very best panto there is.” Panto is so much fun. I’m very well suited for it. This is my third panto and when they asked me to do it I had to ask myself whether I could physically do it as it is two shows a day and you need a lot of energy and I can’t pull back I have to give 100% every time. So every day I’m absolutely exhausted but I still go out there full on. I do this for five weeks and I have the rest of the year to
recover. I just love a live audience; it makes the show different every time.” “In this particular version of Cinderella Dandini has a little bit of a twist on him. He’s just a little bit more over the top looking after the prince! I have a fantastic costume to wear. It’s like pink and sparkly with lots of glitter! I always have to put my own stamp on things so when the wardrobe department asked if I wanted more sparkle of course I said: ‘Yes! Do you have to ask?’ If his performance as Dandini is half as over the top and entertainining as our chat with him then we’re all in for a treat this Christmas – This is one show not to miss! Comebacks here have been some unbelievable comebacks lately, the biggest one being Reading throwing away a 4‐0 lead against Arsenal in the Capital One Cup with the visitors ending up winning 7‐5. Both managers’ must have been through every emotion imaginable. Brian McDermott must have been in dreamland at 4‐0, but the goal on the stroke of half‐ time would definitely have affected his team‐talk. There were only minutes remaining when Arsenal got back to 4‐4. Arsenal celebrated so much that two of their players threw their shirts into the crowd, but because it was a cup‐tie and extra time was on the horizon, they had to get them back from the crowd! This is the first time that has ever happened in my life, so even on £200,000 a week, some of the players don’t know the rules of the competition they are playing in. Manchester United came from 2‐0 down at Aston Villa to win 3‐2 recently, substitute Hernandez bagging a hat‐trick, so it is becoming a regular occurrence. The best comeback we have had at Peterborough was in 2010 when we faced Cardiff City at London Road. We were 4‐0 down at the break and there appeared to be no hope and I remember going into the boardroom thinking we would lose by 10. www.theposh.com But we went back out and threw the kitchen sink at them second half and came back to draw 4‐4! Since Darren Ferguson has been at the club we have been known as comeback kings because we have found ourselves behind and made a remarkable recovery to come back and rescue a point or three. Unfortunately, that knack has left us this year and we haven’t been able to come from behind once, so with these recent extraordinary comebacks it will hopefully give us the incentive of performing one very soon. Happy Christmas to all of you

Man
of the Month
Gary Hone Age: 35 Occupation: Director at Advancing Property Resides: Bedford
Best Holiday destination and why? Maldives – The only place I can honestly say I completely relaxed, absolute paradise.
Describe yourself in three words? I think people are more complex than that. Anyone that can sum themselves up in 3 words isn't trying hard enough!
Youcan’t leave the house without? My I phone & I pad.
What makes you stand out in a crowd? Usually it's the handcuffs and the police escort.
Where do you see yourself in ten years? Running a national brand of Advancing Property Estate Agents and having the ability to invest in other new business ventures.
Your top three movies? Batman ‐ Dark Knight Star Wars Forrest Gump
What three people dead or alive would you invite to a dinner party and why? Gordon Ramsey ‐ Someone’s got to cook Mickey Flanagan – For laughs Jeremy Clarkson – For a bit of controversy
What do you do to relax? Trying to keep fit! I enjoy running and try to go two/three times a week, otherwise it’s spending time at home with the family. Your most extravagant purchase and why? Would have to be my house.
What makes you happy? Spending time with my children Ethan, Alex & Thomas, most of the time they’re hilarious and very entertaining.
If you could be anyone or anything what would it be? One of the Top Gear presenters they look like they have a right laugh and they get to drive around in fast cars all day.
Saturday night you can be found where? Normally relaxing with the family after a hard day selling and letting houses, watching some awful TV like X Factor or Strictly Come Dancing.
Describe your ideal woman? This must be a trick question! Of course my wife Vickie

DREAMING OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS? By Sue Alexander Managing Director of Eagle Travel
isn't that what Christmas is all about? A typical festive short break would include flights to Finland, a coach transfer to your Lodge which takes you through the heartland of the local Sami people. Keep a watchful eye out for reindeer in the woods! Once at your chosen Arctic Lodge you collect your own thermal suits and boots and then you are ready to join one of many activities, such as a snowmobile safari, husky sleigh rides or simply stargazing in search of the Northern Lights. Supervised kids' snowmobile rides are usually available with a chance to get up close to a friendly reindeer and pay a visit to Santa’s cabin. Join the Santa Safari ‐ the highlight of the day ‐ when you board a reindeer sleigh and set off in search of Father Christmas. Each child has the chance to talk with Santa during a private family meeting in his cabin, and if you’re there Christmas Eve, have a chat with him before he sets off on his annual journey around the world.
very child dreams of experiencing a white Christmas, of seeing Santa on his sleigh being pulled by reindeers. So imagine the enchantment of waking up surrounded by the snow‐draped forests and frozen landscape of Santa's own kingdom, Lapland, deep inside the Arctic Circle. Imagine the look on your child’s face when they meet Santa himself. Lapland is perhaps best known as the magical home of Father Christmas, however it’s also home to huskies, reindeer and vast tracts of snow‐covered plains, ideal for snowmobiling. It is a mysterious region in the far north of Scandinavia inhabited by ancient nomadic tribes of reindeer herders, the Sami people. In winter temperatures rarely rise above zero, the ground is usually decked with snow, and the sun never clears the horizon.
As Christmas Day dawns you can join a snowmobile safari or a husky sleigh ride followed by a warming lunch. Throughout the day you can enjoy snow activities outside, throwing snowballs or taking one of the toboggans which are available. There's usually an outdoor ice rink too, with skates for hire. After a special Christmas Dinner relax by the warming fire, or join an optional night safari if you haven’t already had enough fresh air for one day!
The perfect time to take the family to meet Father Christmas in his own home. Waking up in a snow‐covered Arctic Lodge is only part of the enchantment of a short break, there is so much more to enjoy. The warm welcome, cosy log fires and hearty food, a husky pulled sleigh ride in search of Santa, to a Snowmobile Adventure, wonderful hospitality with a sense of something special going on ...

After breakfast on Boxing Day you can take exciting optional excursions such as meeting the husky puppies or going ‘ice fishing’. After lunch families may be provided with the materials to decorate a gingerbread house, with a prize for the best, or there's usually a chance to join a Wilderness Treasure Hunt! In the evening enjoy a walk to the local church across the border and sing a few carols, then back to the Lodge for dinner and chance to relax, with memories that will last a lifetime... Of course not everyone wants to be away from family & friends over Christmas itself. Many companies offer family breaks to Lapland from mid November when the snow starts to really fall, and they can be for any duration ‐ if you are really pushed for time it’s even possible to visit Santa for a daytrip. But it’s not just for Children ‐there are so many activities for adults ‐ it’s a destination ideal for the child at heart too!! In such a beautiful & romantic place few things could be more special than a true snow white wedding deep inside the Arctic Circle! Your wedding carriage could be a sleigh, decorated and drawn by reindeer! The groom might even arrive by snowmobile! The setting for your big day, an attractive church with its’ slender bell tower and views of the winter wonderland or in the nearby Ice Chapel, built from ice each year. Later, as you celebrate your truly white wedding, perhaps the Northern Lights will dance overhead – Magical!! Prices vary depending on the date of travel and of course duration, the most expensive trips being over Christmas. Most include all flights, transfers, meals and thermal clothing, some include activities where others are optional and can be pre‐ booked or arranged when you are there.

Christmas is nearly upon us ‌ ell, so we retailers would like to have you believe, but this isn’t a sales pitch; just an idea. There really are some things about early hints of Christmas which can be a lot of fun, particularly for young kids, and which can be fun for their parents to get involved in. In particular, I’m thinking of Advent Calendars. Whether you’re religiousâ€?minded or not, Christmas is a time for presents and family events. But the “countdownâ€? to Christmas can be used to teach kids to count – at least up to 25! An advent calendar usually has 25 small windows or pockets, with one being opened each day from December 1st until Christmas Day. Those pockets – if you put the effort in – can contain little presents or treats for the kids, and you can make a game of it, with them counting from one through to the current day before they’re allowed to open today’s pocket and retrieve the goodies.
were “invented by the Lutherans in Germany in the mid1800s and were quite simple affairs. Like so many early Christmas celebratory ideas, this one struck a chord with nonLutherans and has become quite popular here in Britain. Advent calendars can be paper or cardboard, or you can buy rather more elaborate ones made of fabric – or you can buy a kit and make one yourself. I said this wasn’t a sales pitch and I meant it. We have very few advent calendars left in stock because we have a bunch of regular customers who buy up our calendars, which are fancy fabric jobbies. Worse, this article will be printed too late for you to do much about it this year – but there’s always next year, isn’t there? All of us at Tudor Rose Patchwork would like to wish the readers of Affinity Magazine (clever and discerning people that you are) a very Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

have a friend who I love dearly but she has become very selfish - it is always her and her problems every time I talk/text/see her. It is the same issues all the time and although I listen and give her my thoughts (only when she asks) she does the exact opposite and, thus, we go round in circles, repeating the same issues all the time. I recently had a very important presentation with work and was a little worried about how it would go. When I mentioned this she just ignored me and carried on talking about herself, the final straw being she didn’t even ask me how it went. I love her dearly but I am beginning to resent her for her selfishness and 'me me me' attitude – Nicola Hi Nicola, Your friend sees you as her confidant and when you need advice you are stepping out of the comfortable box that she has you set in her mind. It’s almost a ‘How could she talk about herself when I still have problems?’ attitude. This is not going to change. She is not used to handing out advice and feels uncomfortable being put in a situation where she feels that she must. The advice that she would give would only ever be as a side shot to get back to her own problems; strangely enough it doesn’t make her less of a friend. Just a friend who leans, rather than can be leaned upon; try and find a more comfortable friend to lean on for yourself!

i Sue, My home is full of negative energy. Can you suggest ways to bring more love, happiness and laughter into it? Thank you - Carys You can clear the space with sage by lighting a dried bunch and spreading the smoke. Don’t leave the space empty of vibrations; nature abhors a vacuum.

fell out with my mum about 3 years ago - I tried on numerous occasions to contact her and got no response and so I had resigned myself to having no contact with her anymore. However surprisingly I have just recieved a letter from her saying she would like to get back in contact and thus I am terribly confused and not sure what to do as I was terribly hurt not just for me but my children as well - her grandchildren! Can you help? Diane Hi Diane, your mum had to think very strongly before contacting you ‐ she gets very depressed and low and now she feels better she feels that contact is possible. There is a great deal of love there.

Soul Mates and Past Lives
T
journey is effective only for that particular soul, but soul mates drop in and out of our existences, as and when necessary for both us and them. They will fill a void while with you, and leave one when they go. That just shows the measure of our need for them. The main thing is to appreciate them while they are with us, enjoy the times together, and still feel the connection and the lesson when they have parted.
hroughout life you will meet people who you feel know you inside and out, often with very little said between you, you can settle down comfortably like a pebble on a stoney beach. This can be a work contact, a parent /child relationship, a sibling, or a love partner; even a pet can be a soul mate. It can feel that we own, and are owned by, this connection and it can be a mistake to think that it has to be forever. Soul mates are believed to be connected to us back through many lives, they come to teach us something, and they can leave when it is done.
Past life regression can help you recognise those with whom you have travelled before. Usually done with hypnosis in a light trance, you are regressed backwards in time by a qualified hypnotist through this life to a past existence, where it is you who brings the previous life forward with your own words, often making sense of fears and difficulties which have challenged you in this lifetime, and sometimes curing them for good.
It is thought more and more that souls go through many identities before they reach enlightenment, and it is believed by many that they have lived, loved and died before, sometimes many times, returning to the earthly plain to live and learn, and grow towards the light. Soul mate connections are all a part of this belief and it is said that groups of souls travel earthly paths together, to learn from each other and the experiences of life. We have all met people who go from one crazy event to another, seemingly to never learn humility, justice, or peace of mind, sometimes from the cradle to the grave; what, we wonder, can a soul learn from that? Each person’s lessons are different, and so each earthly
Fears of fire, drowning and violence can all stem from past life or past death experiences, claustrophobia from imprisonment, food obsession from starvation, and once sense is made of this, the fears can loosen the grip that they have on your mind, to allow an easier lifetime. Past Life regression is available at Sanctuary, by appointment.
