rom time to time our customers twit us on our pricing. And we sympathise, we really do. After all, we are consumers as well. We’d just love to be able to keep our prices at the same level, year in and year out.

But we’re not the masters of our own fate when it comes to purchasing goods to sell in the shop. Prices are trending up, particularly prices for imported goods or goods containing raw materials which are, however temporarily, in short supply. We absorb quite a few of the smaller price rises, and I think a lot of other retailers do the same. We will often keep the price at the “old” price, reducing our margin. We do this because we recognise that people are struggling to make ends meet. Our margin isn’t something you’d write home about in any case, but we believe that the pain should be shared. There are limits to this, of course, because we have to make a reasonable margin to survive.

But, despite what some customers might think, we’re not driving the prices up to line our pockets. We’re reacting to a situation we can’t control. This often leaves customers having to make hard choices. Do I buy the cheapest product I can find, or do I bite the bullet and buy quality? A lot of our quilting fabrics – which are almost all 100% cotton and are well made – are priced at between £11 and £15 a metre. That seems outrageous to the average buyer. They know that they can go to a market or a low price store and purchase cotton fabric for less than half that amount. If price is the only consideration, then that’s what we recommend that our customers do. The fabrics sold there usually won’t be particularly good, but they might be good enough. But if you want something to last, we don’t recommend that you “cut your cloth to suit your purse”. Quality costs. Unfortunately, it’s costing more than it used to.

Moggerhanger House n the middle of Bedfordshire is a jewel of British architecture... Moggerhanger House.

Stephen Thornton inherited Moggerhanger on the death of his father in 1805 and Soane continued to implement alterations to Moggerhanger.

I

Since the early part of the eighteenth century a building has existed on the greensand ridge where Moggerhanger House is situated.

The estate was sold in 1857 to reverend Edward Henry Dawkins, at the time it comprised 2,056 acres.

In 1777 Robert Thornton inherited Moggerhanger from his uncle, Richard Astell, but he considered it far from suitable for a gentleman of his status. Although he took up residence for a while, in 1784 he sold the estate to his brother Godfrey Thornton. Godfrey was Governor for the Bank of England from 1793 until 1795.

In 1919 having passed through several hands it was acquired by the Bedfordshire County Council as a Sanatorium, first for TB and then as an Orthopaedic Hospital. At this time it was known as Park Hospital. The hospital closed in 1987 and was acquired by Hillson & Twigden Homes as a building site. They planned to build on the kitchen garden but had no use for the main house, which was a listed Grade II Georgian building. In June 1997 the house was uplisted to Grade I when it was discovered that it was such an important part of Sir John Soane's work.

From 1790 -1797 Godfrey Thornton appointed Sir John Soane, to work on the house for him, he made various alterations and improvements including moving the entrance to the east side of the house and enlarging the property by adding a new hall, drawing room and some additional accommodation. The new entrance was protected by a single storey, rectangular ionic portico, the roof of which formed a balcony outside the window of the new boudoir on the first floor.

In 1995, the house and some of its grounds were acquired by ‘Harvest Vision’ for a Christian Conference and Retreat Centre, and restoration work started on the outside of the house. They established ‘Moggerhanger House Preservation Trust’ and in 1997 obtained a landfill Tax Grant which allowed them to acquire Garden Wood and the walled gardens that were still owned by Twigden Homes.

In 1791 Humphrey Repton (a prominent landscape gardener of his time) was commissioned to landscape the Moggerhanger Estate.

January was a crazy month for transfers! The transfer window opened for a month in January and is the worst time to do any business whatsoever, but year after year clubs spend an absolute fortune on transfers. I think last year the total spent was around £225 million and all of it is panic buying. The prices go up, there is no value for money and often clubs leave it until the last minute. Of that £225 million spent in January 12 months ago, I think £175 million was in the last few days when Andy Carroll went from Newcastle United to Liverpool and Fernando Torres swapped Anfield for Stamford Bridge. If you ask Liverpool or Chelsea fans whether or not they have been a success, over a year later, neither have established themselves at all. Plenty of clubs splash out in January, even in the Championship as clubs try to get into the Promised Land of the Premier League. There is no money about in the game, in fact there is no money about in the world, yet these obscene transfer dealings go through every year. As a previous owner of a football club, I am staggered that better businessmen than I will ever be, run these football clubs, yet they never bring any sanity or common sense to the game by refusing to do deals that their managers want in this crazy window. That means we at Peterborough United will not be bringing anyone in or letting anyone go during this January window. That is what I am saying to you now, but who knows what will happen between now and the end of this window so WATCH THIS SPACE!

Since it is the month of love I thought we could love our bodies this month (even more than normal!) We are always told ‘knowledge is power’ and when it comes to our bodies this statement is so true. The more we can find out about how our bodies work the more we can be aware of changes it makes. Here are my top tips to love your body and to know how to look after it. After all we want to get the best out of it.

Your history • Know your family’s health history. Speak to your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers and sisters about their health and you can begin to highlight potential hereditary conditions. By knowing the areas you could potentially be at risk from you can be aware of the signs and symptoms • Know your risk of cancer. There are lots of screening centres around the UK that offer a health check. If you have highlighted in your family history that there could be a problem then get checked out and be safe. Also you could address certain lifestyle choices - drink less, quit smoking etc. to try and minimise your risk even further. • Know your cholesterol levels. Ideally you should have you cholesterol checked every five years by your GP, or more frequently if your doctor has recommended so. Know the foods to eat plenty of • Broccoli - Broccoli is one of the nutritious foods you can eat. It is packed full of vitamins and minerals, it also contains the phytochemical sulforaphane, which can help reduce the risk of cancer. • Olive oil - switch your frying oil and salad dressings for olive oil and benefit from the omega3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats that can help reduce your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease too. • Berries - scientists in Finland found that eating 5 ounces a day offers 3 huge heart healthy benefits; Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, improving cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure. • Green tea - could you swap one of your regular cups of tea or coffee for a cup of super healthy green tea? Green tea is high in a chemical called EGCG, one of the most potent anticancer compounds ever found. Know the foods you should avoid like the plague • Processed and refined carbs - a sure fire way to increase your body fat percentage, increase your body weight and increase your risk of heart disease. Steer clear of white bread, pasta, cakes, sweets, jams, pastry, refined grains like white rice • Processed meats - hot dogs, shop brought sausages (as opposed to butchers own), Spam are all examples of fat and salt food bombs! They also

frequently contain nitrates and artificial colours and preservative which have links to cancer. • Artificial sweeteners - Five hundred times the sweetness of sugar but zero calories - too good to be true? YES! The sweetness of the flavour fools the body into thinking it is getting calories then when it doesn’t it craves more food. Doesn’t make sense as a weight loss tool then does it?! • Alcohol - Not only does alcohol contain empty calories but it can dehydrate you. More than 2 glasses per day can increase your chance of getting dementia later in life. Make a change Food quality has dropped in the past 10 years and stress levels are increasing which is leading us nicely into a whirlwind of ill health and obesity, so let’s STOP now and do something about it. • Shop organic where you can. There are plenty of farm shops around so visit them weekly and buy your fruit and veg fresh and LOCAL - not only are you supporting local businesses, you’re saving the planet by reducing the carbon footprint and you’re going to be getting the freshest possible fruit and veg. Yes, shopping local is more expensive than the big supermarket chains but there is a reason for it - good food costs more than mass produced, chemically enhanced, flavourless food. • Take your pills - Everyone should be taking a multivitamin. Even if we eat fresh fruit and veg, we can’t guarantee we’re getting enough of all the vitamins we need. I nag because I care! • Quit smoking - If there is going to be one change you make to your health and lifestyle, then let it be this one. You can literally add years to your life by giving up smoking. There are so many support networks available now so take the plunge and change your life. • Drink water - I know I go on about it but as a human your life depends on you drinking water. Remember the 8 glass rule as a MINIMUM. Dehydration can cause confusion, dizziness, headaches, kidney problems, muscle soreness....need I go on! • Exercise like your life depends on it - 30 minutes of exercise a day can decrease your risk of heart disease (the UK’s number 1 killer) by 80 percent.......YES 80 percent! The Dragon The Year of the Dragon – 2012 2012 is the Year of the Dragon! There are 12 animals representing each Chinese New Year, and according to Chinese Mythology, the dragon is a symbol of success and happiness. It is believed that the Year of the Dragon will be marked with excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. People born under the Dragon are passionate, brave and selfassured. In general they are blessed with good fortune. They are smart, enterprising and have a wicked sense of humour. Their charisma and charm is an immense draw to people of the opposite sex whose attention and admiration they crave. Though they have a tendency to treat love like a game, they can settle down when they meet the right partner, someone who’s strong enough not to be bowled over by the Dragon’s flamboyant, independent and stubborn personality.

On the twenty third January 2012 people all over the world will be celebrating the start of one of the most important events in the Chinese calendar – The Chinese New Year! Also known as the spring festival, it is very similar to the Western New Year, swathed in traditions and rituals. The celebrations begin on the first day of the lunar month and continue for fifteen days, when the moon is brightest. The first week is celebrated with visits to friends and family followed by lots of good luck traditions. On New Year’s Eve, families gather together and have a large, traditional meal – a bit like our Christmas dinner. Then people will stay up until midnight, when they set off fireworks to frighten away evil spirits. The end of the New Year is on the fifteenth day of the lunar month and is marked by the festival of Lanterns, which is a huge celebration featuring singing, dancing and stunning lantern shows.

They need a daily effort if you want to be in it for the long haul and it’s the little things that make huge impacts, so here are some things you can do to reconnect with each other and put some spark back into your relationship today and everyday………….

e’re all GUILTY – Once the first flush of romance has passed, all relationships lose their sparkle and passion and if you don’t do something about it, you can easily become strangers and problems can surface.

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about how to “Put the spark back in your relationship”

Taking time each day to work on your relationship, even in the smallest way, will make for a happy and lasting one.

A relationship, like anything else you want to last, requires attention, work and regular maintenance. Imagine buying a car, driving it off the forecourt and never checking or changing the oil, filling it up with petrol, or getting regular services. You’re not going to get too far and it’s certainly not going to last you as long as it could. 30

First date - Re-create your first date. Think back to where you went, what movie you saw, what meal you ate. Then re-create it. It’s fun to take a trip down memory lane and have all the excitement and feelings come flooding back.

Say ‘Thank You’ - We show gratitude to strangers and people we work with all the time, but it's easy to forget to do the same for our partners. A small gesture of thanks, whether it's saying thank you for emptying the cat litter, cooking a nice meal or just for being there goes an awfully long way.

Show affection - Hold hands, hug, and kiss or just put your arm around him/her. There is a lot to be said for the healing power of touch. Try a back rub, footsie under the table, whatever you like just make a point of having physical contact each and everyday. Kissing is one of the most intimate things you can do with your clothes on and will help to maintain and build up the romantic bond between you.

Make time - We all have busy lives and even evenings can be taken up with lots of chores or work. So try to spend just 10 minutes alone together every day to find out what each of you have been up to. Leave notes for each other - Get a pack of sticky notes and write little messages you can leave where your loved one will find them. We're not talking about ones that say: 'Remember to take the bins out'!

Communicate - Personally, I think this one is the key to any relationship. Just talk and listen to each other. Discuss your dreams and hopes for the future, your fears and what you most look forward to. Turn off the TV and just chat. Talk about stuff that you both like - films, books, cooking, gardening, DIY, anything as long as you talk. Communication is one of the biggest parts of a relationship and not talking will cause you problems.

Flowers - Think of her favourite flowers from time to time and give them to her “just because”. Forget the past - This means silly arguments or things where one of you may have done or said something they now regret. Move forward and concentrate on your future together. By harbouring resentment, you will never be able to move on with your relationship.

Go Away Together - Sometimes, it takes some distance and time together to remind you how much you love and enjoy each other's company. Get someone to look after the kids and get away for a night or weekend, where you can just do fun things together that you can never do at home.

Taking time each day to work on your relationship, even in the smallest way, will make for a happy and lasting one.

Date Night - Pick a night this week to go out on a date. Whether it’s dinner and a movie or just a couple of drinks after work followed by a walk in the park, the point is to have time alone together to reconnect. Take turns planning a special evening each week, make it a competition. To add a little twist arrange to meet somewhere, arrive separately, and then pretend it's the first time you've been out together. Find out about each other all over again. This will remind you what you used to see in each other. Massage - Book a couples massage at a local day spa. This can be especially invigorating after a long stressful week and set the tone for a relaxing weekend. Say 'I love you' - Those three words are often forgotten as relationships progress, but, said properly, they mean so much. In fact, you don't even need to say them, send a text or email and say it. 31

e all need some time away with our other half to escape the everyday turmoil and stresses of life and what better way especially as this is the month of ‘Love’ than some romantic luxury time together, and that’s just what myself and my husband did – but instead of getting in the car for an hours drive we discovered this guilty pleasure right on our doorstep at The luxury Lotus Spa situated within the 18th century Swan Hotel in Bedford, where we were going to enjoy a full luxury body massage with chocolates, champagne and rose petals – I couldn’t wait!

he whole experience was one of calm and tranquillity our bodies felt rebalanced and refreshed and we felt as if we had shared some actual ‘couples time’

Once the massages were finished we weren’t rushed out we were able to sit up and enjoy our champagne alone until we felt ready to rejoin the outside world. We then enjoyed lunch whilst we chilled in our fluffy white gowns and slippers in the relaxation area that is for spa guests only.

Angela and Sam who run the spa were inspired to create somewhere for you to come and relax, rejuvenate, rebalance and replenish your energy with a wonderful selection of western and eastern treatments – they wanted to create a real indulgence of your senses, and this is exactly what they have done at The Swan.

After lunch we then experienced some more bubbles but this time in the Jacuzzi! We left our spa day having spent more than 4 hours indulging in time for us. We both felt completely rejuvenated and refreshed.

When we arrived we spent some time relaxing in the Roman bath inspired swimming pool and Jacuzzi until venturing into the ‘couples treatment room’ for our full body massage by candlelight.

This is just one of the treatments the Lotus Spa offers as well as many packages for couples, mums to be, brides etc so why not visit their website or give them a call to see how you can recharge your batteries with a little bit of pampering.

As we stepped into the candlelit room, the ambience of calm and tranquillity was overwhelming and time seemed to stand still, the beds were scattered with rose petals with a glass of champagne to enjoy and chocolates waiting for us before our massage began.

If you wish to book the ‘Romantic luxury time together’ package for a Valentine’s present or just because you want some relaxing time with your partner it is something I would highly recommend the cost is £130 per couple and can be tailored to your own individual requirements.

Both Angela and Sam made me and my husband feel completely relaxed and all the stresses of our busy everyday lives slowly disappeared as they expertly worked their magic.

Just look at Gok Wan and his ‘How to look beautiful naked’ – it’s all about simply knowing what’s right for you.

First stop and apparently this is Mary Ann’s first stop for everyone, House of Fraser for some ‘Spanx’ underwear, it is important to make sure the underwear is right otherwise the whole look can be ruined. Everyone should own some Spanx they are £30 (well I now have mine – very Bridget Jones – but hey as long as you don’t unwrap me you’ll never know!) It’s apparently what all the celebs wear!

The key to dressing well and developing a personal style is surprisingly simple: find out what suits you and your lifestyle, how to pull it all together, and where to buy it – so I decided to give it a go and contacted ‘Style Me’ a London based company that have just branched out into Milton Keynes. My styling session started with a phone call to a lovely lady called Mary Ann Ventour, who got some basic info from me on the phone such as lifestyle, size, what I usually wear, my colouring, particulars etc – she also asked me what my budget was as she said she could work within most budgets no matter how large or small

Next stop H&M, where Mary Ann informed me we were going for a ‘spring look’ - the trench (£29.99) should be a staple in any wardrobe and is perfect for showing off a small waist and excellent proportion (hourglass is THE best shape a woman could be!), which is what she told me I was – I love this woman!

I told her I was looking to update my work day wardrobe, and she suggested that as I don’t work in a corporate office we had the flexibility to add jeans to my new look, and with my budget we would be able to put together 2 distinct looks.

She then teamed the trench with a striped top (H&M) which has an exposed zip at the back (on trend) but the style of the top is not clingy which means I am able to hide my tummy area which is something I’d told her previously I don't like to accentuate.

We then agreed a day to meet in Milton Keynes to put my new look together (Mary Ann did tell me she would go to Milton Keynes before our meeting to pre select some outfits)

Then it was the H&M £29.99 boot cut jeans which are a must for anyone with womanly curves...worn in the right size they lift and separate the bum whilst elongating your legs...the length plays a big part and they HAVE to been worn with a good heel.

I was getting very excited and looking forward to seeing the clothes/outfits that were picked out for me – I could get used to this personal shopping experience!

Talking about the shoes...she went for red as she said they really finish the look (we got these from House of Fraser from a brand called Kaliko £70)

The day arrived and we met at Starbucks in Milton Keynes for a coffee at 11am, I had never met Mary Ann before, only spoken to her on the phone yet it felt as if I was meeting an old friend.

To finish the look Mary Ann added a H&M £24.99 bag (which is a YSL copy but nobody needs to know!) and aviator sunglasses (H&M £3.99) which literally never go out of fashion. She told me to finish this look with red lips.

Then we go for my second look (remember we are working within my budget), this second look not only looks great but is multi functional. A black dress (H&M £24.99) which nips in at the waist is really going to give me a great silhouette which will be...very Jessica Rabbit! This dress is teamed with THICK black opaque tights (£7.99) which are apparently the sincerest form of flattery to any leg shape whether you have shapely pins or not.

This rich and buttery pasta dish is perfect for that romantic Valentine night in ‘A meal fit for a goddess,’ (so it was spoken years gone by in Italy) also because asparagus is considered to be an aphrodisiac! In Italy we would use the fresh catch of the day. When they had crab on their morning’s catch then that was the restaurant special that evening. Asparagus spears are a wonderful vegetable which are packed with goodness, and taste absolutely great. Traditional Chinese herbalists have used asparagus for thousands of years to treat maladies, including such widely disparate ailments as arthritis and infertility, and today scientists have established that asparagus is a heart-healthy food, containing no fat, cholesterol or sodium.

Ingredients Dried linguine pasta 1tbsp olive oil Crab meat from two crabs 1 bundle of asparagus, trimmed and cut into 2.5cm lengths 100g butter 3tbsp parsley, finely chopped 2tbsp chives, finely chopped 1 onion peeled and finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 mild red chili, deseeded and finely chopped 50ml vegetable stock Juice from 1 lemon

Recipe Cook the linguine pasta in plenty of boiling salted water, according to the packet's instructions. Drain the majority of the water and add the olive oil, stir through the pasta and keep warm. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a large frying pan, add the onion and asparagus and season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cook over a medium heat for 2-3 mins then add the chili and garlic and cook for 1 min. Add the crab along with the vegetable stock and cook for a further 2 mins. Stir in the chopped parsley, chives and lemon juice then add the pasta and make sure all the ingredients are mixed together thoroughly. Season, if necessary, to taste and serve immediately

Chocolate Valentine’s Cake Forget the usual chocolates and roses for your Valentine, and instead say, 'I love you,' with this chocolate heart-shaped cake decorated how you choose.

'Satisfaction' Eristoff Black Vodka Archers Cranberry Juice In a tall glass add 25ml Archers, then fill three quarters of the way up with cranberry juice. Fill the rest of the glass with the Eristoff black vodka, which will float on the top, add a slice of lime or strawberry for decoration – serve chilled or over crushed ice!

For the cake: 4oz dark chocolate (grated) 4oz ground almonds 4oz butter 6oz caster sugar For the granache: 6 tbls milk 6oz dark chocolate 4 eggs separated 1oz butter 6oz self raising flour 1 tbls cream Method Line a heart shape tin, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Whisk egg yolks and add a little at a time to the mixture. Fold in ground almonds, grated chocolate and milk. Whisk egg whites and gently fold into the mixture. Add the flour and bake in an oven 170C or gas mark 3 for approx 1 hour 10 mins or until centre of cake springs back when touched. Gently melt the remaining chocolate and butter in a bowl over simmering water. Cool slightly, and then add the cream. When cooled slightly, pour over cake and if necessary smooth with a palette knife. You can then decorate the cake how you like with: roses, raspberries, strawberries, white chocolate hearts and much more – you choose.

Play Method Line an 8-inch square tin with foil. In a medium-size, microwave-safe bowl, combine the milk chocolate layer ingredients. Microwave the mixture on high at 30-second intervals until the chocolate is melted (about a minute), stirring at each interval. A creative approach to...........

creative writing or those who have children in formal education there is in almost every academic year a requirement to write creatively. As parents most of us may not have had to do that for more years than we care to remember. But take heart it is not only something that is very achievable but it is also something that can be fun.

Creativity is a noun that means the ability to transcend traditional ideas. Put simply it’s a new way of looking at something or making something or, in terms of writing, a new or different way of writing about something. Writing is putting thoughts down on paper, or more commonly these days, on a computer or word processor. For us as parents that is often where the problem lies. Unless we happen to work in a role that involves writing, it is not something we are likely to do a lot of and therefore it is a skill we probably lack confidence in, and as the old saying goes ‘practice makes perfect’. We tend to get better at things when we have to keep on practicing the skill. Although there are often degrees of natural talent as evidenced by progress made by contestants on the X factor, practice and training also contribute to skill and success. For parents, shopping lists, the odd letter, email or face book status, hardly counts as writing practice.

In terms of helping your child the first hurdle for many adults to overcome is quite literally putting pen to paper. It helps if it’s a decent pen and if you have a bit of time, so you don’t feel rushed and, with any sort of work, a bit of peace and quiet and a decent table space also helps. But do not fear there are lots of things you can do to help your child write creatively long before that hurdle is reached. Writing is about putting thoughts down on paper and the thinking part can be done literally anywhere. In fact a good place to start is when you are outdoors at the park or visiting somewhere, try talking about things you see and ways of describing them. Trees can be a good place to start, think about ways of describing the different types of leaves, large flat ones or spiky pines, greens, reds and every shade in between. Clearly the type of words you use will depend on the age and ability of your child, but try thinking of different ways and words to describe what you see. Then you can start thinking about the use of metaphors and similes. A simile is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared – ‘she is like a rose’ A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a phrase is applied to something it is not; literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance ‘… she was a rose’ 52

If your child is reluctant try to make it fun by getting them to use all their senses and trying some of the activities below. Taste Close your eyes and you and your child both eat something, sherbet lemon sweets work well, but anything with a distinctive flavour will work. Try and describe what you are tasting – then contrast it with a completely different taste and try to describe that. Touch Have a few secret objects in a bag and again with eyes closed try to describe what you are touching, often it’s good to aim for contrasts, a ‘brillo’ pad then a piece of silk for example. Again try to describe what you are feeling and with this you could take it in turns and see if you can guess from the description what the other is touching Sight Postcards of different objects or places work well for this or you could try designing something

One of the ways everyone can increase their vocabulary is simply by reading. Try finding some descriptive passages from books. I remember reading Great Expectations as a child and being able to picture exactly what Miss Haversham’s wedding room looked like. If you find a good description in a book then you can ask how would you ‘set’ it for a film. Lots of children may have read Harry Potter books for example, before they saw the films and reading a description of a scene or character can open up a discussion about how the director chose to portray it and whether or not it was like they had imagined that part of the book. Reading the opening sentences of books can be good fun too. They really have to capture the reader to make them keep reading. I have heard of a game where you can read the back of a book then try to write the opening sentence and compare your own with the real one. This can work with adult or children’s fiction.

A Whole New Ball Game The Six Nations Championship is the oldest rugby championship in the world, dating back to 1882. This year it kicks off on 4th February. Originally held between the four United Kingdom countries England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, France joined in 1910 and Italy twelve years ago in 2000.

coincided with the 1910 opening of the RFU’s new home at Twickenham. France joined the fray in1910, and initially struggled to achieve any notable success. The outbreak of war saw the tournament put on hold between 1914 – 1920 and the inter war years were dominated by England as they swept to nine championship victories including five Grand Slams. France continued to struggle and in 1931 they were forced to pull out of the championship, and didn’t rejoin until the end of the Second World War in 1947 – in the early post war seasons Ireland took three outright titles including consecutive triple crowns in 1948 and 49. France shared the title in 1954 and 55 and were then champions for four years in a row from 1959 – 1962 and in 1968 won their first Grand Slam. The 1970’s brought mixed fortunes. In 1972 the

tournament couldn’t be completed because Scotland and Wales refused to play in Dublin because of the escalating political problems. And the following year the tournament ended with a unique five way tie – every country having won and lost two games. The 1970’s belonged to Wales, whereas England struggled throughout the 1970’s and most of the following decade – in the 1980’s it was France that came into their own, winning the title outright three times, including two Grand Slams in 1981 and 1987

Italy started this newly christened tournament superbly, winning their opening game gainst Scotland in Rome, and in 2007 had their best tournament to date with back to back wins against Scotland and Wales. The 2010 Six Nations belonged to France as they won the Grand Slam for the first time since 2004.

In 1984 Scotland won their first Grand Slam for 59 years and Ireland 12 months later – neither have won it since.

The 2011 Six Nations could have brought England their first Grand Slam since 2003 but Ireland beat them in the penultimate game of the tournament, leaving Wales a slim chance of taking the title if they had beat France by a wide margin, but France beat Wales and England took the title.

The dominance of England and France during the 1990’s brought criticism that the championship was not offering a high enough standard of competition, and thus Italy were asked to join in 2000, and the six Nations were born.

The 6 Nations has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a simple challenge from one country to another. It is now one of the most exciting events in the rugby calendar and 2012 looks set to be no exception!

Questions from readers My husband has struggled with my friendship with a special couple of friends ever since we seperated for a while ; because he says they remind him of this time, he has now gone off for a month on a personal challenge and has told me when he comes back he knows he needs to address this issue saying things will be different and we can all begin to have fun together again- do you see this happening and him doing as he says? I do see a start with it, but your partner is a man who puts a high price on respect, (which means toeing the line in his language) so he will aim to do this on his terms, However he will have seen the wonder and awe of the world, and been made to feel quite a small cog in the scheme of things, which is a new experience for him. This will put small difficulties into their proper place. He stands a good chance of making this work , if you can ignore the little pushes back towards his comfort zone, every so often . I have started a new course on colour therapy, interior design etc. Do you see me being succesful in this? There is success there, if you also learn how to sell yourself. It is pointless being really good if no one gets to know what you can do. You have a real passion for interiors, and the cards are showing a zany grace and style which would work well in coporate work as well as private housing, If you take this on board, you can do really well.

I keep having the recurring nightmare nearly every night now - that my teeth fall out - and it is really starting to worry me now. I am 22 years old and female? A spell to bring confidence With so many people in difficult situations regarding work , a spell to bring self belief is a must, especially just after the new year, when so much is expected of the year ahead. A small mirror Pen and some paper Ribbon and a candle (any colour) Write your Name on two sheets On the first sheet write down all the reasons that you should not have the good life that you want. Dig deep, and write down all the things that worry or annoy you about yourself. Roll this sheet up into a thin tube. On the second sheet, write all the things that you feel that you are due, and should have to make you happy and confident. For the third sheet choose a person in public or private life that you respect and believe has the qualities that you admire and need. Write their name on this sheet of paper. Write down why you respect them, and what they have about them that you do not have. Lay these last two pieces of paper together writing so that the words face each other. Roll the sheets up together into a tube. Stand it on its’ end on a small plate. Making sure that you are in a safe place (like a fire grate),

Take the first sheet of paper which has been rolled into a thin tube, light the paper and watch the smoke take difficulties away. As the oil covers these, they will be included in the spell, to be brought toward you. Leave the spell, for three days, light a yellow or golden candle, to burn for 3 minutes while you look into the flame and then step forward with confidence into every pathway that opens for you.
