We have a selection of gifts for him and her, lingerie guaranteed to raise his temperature, as well as a selection of food that will tantalise your tastebuds. If you want to spend some romantic time with that special person in your life why not whisk them away to one of our romantic retreats on page 70. We review The Waterfront Restaurant at Wyboston Lakes for a romantic meal for two, and if we ladies needed any convincing it’s a proven fact that not only is chocolate an aphrodisiac, it is also good for us!! Check out page 10 to read the good news. With it being the month of LOVE some of us may be going on a date for the first time since coming out of a previous relationship and may well be feeling a little apprehensive, well here at Affinity we like to help so turn to page 32 to read “The Ten Commandments on Dating after Divorce!” If you’re feeling a little dizzy from all this talk of love and romance don’t worry we still have all our regular features, including a little chat with Gareth Gates and Jimmy Osmond who are appearing in Boogie Nights later this month at Milton Keynes Theatre. Happy Valentines – Have Fun!

Natural Aphrodisiacs for Health and Wellbeing

W

e all need a bit of a boost in the midst of winter and St Valentine’s Day provides just that. St Valentine, associated with courtly love, celebrates love, friendship, marriage and our special bonds by offering a token of our love and appreciation. Ironically, it’s believed that he was celibate. The tokens of affection which I commonly associate with Valentines day are roses and chocolate. I love to see florists brimming with red roses and from a natural health perspective, both roses and chocolate are considered aphrodisiacs. Aphrodisiacs are named in honour of Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of sensuality and love, with roses and chocolates probably being the most universally known. The health benefits of chocolate may surprise you. It’s good for the heart and lowers blood pressure; decreases the risk of blood clotting and reduces bad cholesterol by around 10%. The flavanoids contained in chocolate act as antioxidants protecting the body from free radical damage, which gives chocolate its reputation as an antiaging treat and linked to longevity. If you suffer from a persistent cough, one study suggests that a constituent of cocoa – theobromine – helps to open the airways in the lungs Naturally, this only applies to dark chocolate and it appears that the addition of milk reduces its’ health benefits and adds to its’ calorific value. Eating a chocolate with at least a 65% cocoa content is a must in order to gain the feel good factor and health benefits of chocolate. Dark chocolate is also quite bitter, so can help to balance blood-sugar levels and prevent the onset of diabetes – but only in moderation!

Chocolate releases endorphins which act as natural pain relievers and give us a natural high we might experience after exercise, acting to simultaneously calm us and give a feeling of euphoria at the same time. Rose is probably the best known aphrodisiac of all. It aids relaxation, reduces anxiety and I think of it as the most feminine of herbs. It can not only to be appreciated for its’ beautiful sensual aroma but also taken internally as a tea, tincture or as distilled rosewater. Taken as a tea, Chinese women drink dried rosebuds as they believe it promotes beautiful clear skin. The chemical constituents also act as an anti-depressant, releasing suppressed anger and frustration. As a hormone balancer, it can help with painful periods and menopausal symptoms. If you are susceptible to picking up colds, it is a known great antviral herb. These are just two of the most well known aphrodisiacs, but there are numerous other examples, which have different effects on our body and libido. Some are designed to both appeal to our sense of taste and smell, such as vanilla. Some are stimulants which enhance energy and stamina, such as ginseng. Others, like rose, have an anti-depressant and mood enhancing effect on the body. Whilst others, like nutmeg, give us a natural high and act as a mild narcotic. Whilst this is a light-hearted look at the use of two of the most iconic aphrodisiacs, low libido resulting from a wide variety of causes and health conditions, can have a devastating effect on our self-esteem and enjoyment of life. Depending on the root cause, there are a wide variety of herbal remedies to help, which can also offer us many other health benefits.

All That Glitters It’s said ‘diamonds are a girl's best friend’ but if a Tiffany ring isn’t quite within your budget, don’t fear — you can sparkle up your nails for far less. Candy jewel tones will be hot this year. Gentle shimmering candy shades of pink sapphire, emerald, peridot, ruby and aquamarine

Metal Mania In contrast to the pink, red and caramel tones, darker hues of grey, green and blue will also prove popular. There will be lots of moody greys, greens and blues, bronzes and metallic silvers, along with high shine gloss finishes and metallic lustres and textures.

Be Square There will be a lot more square nails this season, celebrities such as Rihanna and Rita Ora have been showing off this shape a lot recently, but the classic oval/almond shape will still reign supreme, as it’s such an elegant shape and can transform hands!

Red Alert The red nail polish remains a popular favourite and we all need a strong colour to carry us through a dull evening or to jazz up a black dress – with lots of different shades/tones to choose from, this is one look that will never date and there are plenty of shades to choose from, such as Essie ‘Bordeaux’ or ‘Turning Heads’ or OPI’s ‘Hot Glam’ or ‘Big Apple.’

Cuticle Crisis The must-have accessory for 2013 is cuticle oil. It keeps the skin around your nails supple and encourages healthy nail growth. Bold, bright colours can be less than forgiving if your talons aren't in perfect condition.

Top Tips: Keep polish in a cool place - it lasts longer. After each use wipe the neck of the bottle as this stops air getting in and seals the bottle properly. So that all layers can be filed to the same length make sure you soak nails beforehand. Dip your brush into the bottle only once for each nail, dipping introduces air into the bottle, which thickens the polish. 13

hen Jo MacKenzie took up the Headship of Bedford Girls’ School in 2010, she was charged with overseeing a merger between Dame Alice Harpur School and Bedford High School for Girls to create a brand-new day school. She was determined not just to capitalise on the excellent record of the heritage schools but to create a contemporary centre of excellence in all girls’ education that would become among the very best in the country. Two years on and her vision is very much a reality and the school is a dynamic, forward-thinking and innovative place of learning that has already established itself in the hearts and minds of the local community. Brought up and educated in Australia, Jo is committed to girls’ education and arrived in Bedford with a wealth of experience as both a teacher and a Deputy Head within several single-sex schools. Visionary yet extraordinarily grounded, she takes tremendous pride in ensuring Bedford Girls’ School girls receive a well-rounded education that is as much preparation for life as it is for examination success. “While our academic record is excellent, we believe that real learning is not just about amassing information. As an all girls’ school, we support all pupils to lay the foundations for their success in an environment that fizzes with energy, unselfconscious enthusiasm and humour. This is a place where enquiring minds are nurtured and where girls learn to be proud of their achievements and views”.

Zero in on Cellulite Many of us have certain body areas that we’d love to change, one of these being the dreaded cellulite. There are many treatments and creams that offer to tighten those jiggly bits and smooth cellulite, but do they actually work? I decided to try it for myself and went along to the luxurious Yspa at Wyboston Lakes to see what was on offer.

MURAD Vitamin C Body Firming Treatment

T

his body treatment claims to be perfect for firming and toning those troublesome areas and to reduce the signs of cellulite and stretch marks whilst increasing skin firmness. My experience began in the tranquil treatment room with a relaxing foot massage followed by body brushing and a pomegranate body scrub before Murad firm and tone Serum was applied to my legs and thighs followed by a massage using Murad vitamin C body firming cream. Although only on my legs this treatment was 50 minutes of complete calm and escapism, all the stress and tension faded from my body leaving me completely relaxed and rejuvenated. This treatment is fabulous I definitely saw a visible increase in the firmness and smoothness of my legs and thighs - I could change careers and become a supermodel!

It is recommended to have this treatment every four weeks – so I have a definite date booked in my diary. Murad’s mission statement is “to create topical skincare products that transform lives by helping people look and feel healthy and beautiful” something I think they aredefinitely managing to do.

Elemis Body Sculpting Cellulite and Colon Therapy

T

his is a detoxifying treatment which promises to aid and cleanse the digestive system, and assist in the break down of fatty deposits.

We’ve all dreamt of a treatment that can shed the pounds in an instant, and I think this may just be the one. The treatment begins with the all-important top to toe body brush followed by a thorough body scrub- this isn’t a treatment for those of you after a relaxing pamper; this one means business. My therapist vigorously massaged my upper legs and thighs to boost circulation. Next, a detoxifying fennel (known for its diuretic properties) and birch (to stimulate blood flow) peel-off body mask is applied to the legs and top of the thighs, drawing out any impurities to help firm and smooth the skin. Next it’s the cleanse. Working with your breathing pattern, the therapist massages around the stomach, starting at the base of the ascending colon and moving round clockwise, following the line of digestion. The key to this part of the treatment lies in the breathing; pressure is only applied when you exhale, so you have to work with your therapist. This abdominal massage is an important technique to detoxify the body. Finally, the body mask is removed using Hot Mitts before the Body Sculpting Firming Cream is applied. This really is a fantastic treatment to tone, smooth, and firm and results were instantly noticeable; however for best results, a course is recommended rather than a one-off treatment

away

So it’s the moment of truth……………………………

Last month you may remember I had the amazing micropigmentation treatment by Susie Bavister proprietor of Creative Beauty, which is a treatment that gradually fades scars, stretch marks, burns etc. over six to eight sessions.

My Verdict: If you have any stretch marks, scars, burns or other skin problems then this is definitely the treatment for you. Contact Susie who will make you feel at ease straight away and will be more than happy to meet you and discuss your requirements.

Although it takes this many sessions Susie says you should be able to notice a difference after one session, and I have to say I definitely could; the appearance of my stretch marks seemed softer and less prominent – if they continue to fade like this I will be overjoyed at the results after the eight sessions! The treatment works on softening the appearance of stretch marks/burns/scars by using a micro-needling procedure which creates a trauma to the scar/injury, which then encourages your own collagen to come and repair the damaged skin, thus slowly taking away your scar tissue.

50 Shades of Grey “Why men need to wake up and read between the lines”

50

Shades of Grey had sold over 5 million copies in Britain by August 2012 and the numbers will continue to rise. That is a whole lot of women who, according to psychologists, can really relate to a guy who takes charge. Psychologists are not just referring to the bedroom here either, they are commenting on the fact that women appreciate “Mr Grey” for taking charge of ALL aspects of his life, such as his job, making dinner arrangements and being in CONTROL of his body. It frustrates me incredibly to see the ever increasing number of blokes who look like they have swallowed a beach ball. Hang on, to be fair the number of men and women who are overweight/obese is basically the same in the UK. Why then am I having a pop at blokes and not the ladies? Well read on and you will see that women are at a MASSIVE disadvantage when it comes to losing weight compared to men and I will prove it right here…

On average women tend to get these cravings several days before their period and maybe into the period as well. For ease of maths let’s call it 7 days of food cravings you may be getting and eating 2 chocolate bars (approx. 500 calories). Here is a little shocking maths:1 week of craving = 3500 calories. 1 year of cravings = 42,000 calories. Perhaps even more shocking is if we take a women’s menstrual cycle over a 30 year period (say 15 years old to 45) we get 1,260,000 calories eaten in a 30 year period more than men. If we divide that figure by 3500 (amount of calories you need to burn off for your body to release a pound of fat) we get over 25 STONE! So there we have it, thanks to virtually uncontrollable hormonal cravings, a woman potentially has to burn off over 25 stone more than a man just to stay at a healthy weight in a 30 year period This all highlights just how much harder it is for women to achieve a healthy weight compared to men. Men are at a HUGE advantage when it comes to weight control as they do not have this huge issue of menstrual cravings to go through, but for some reason just choose to stuff it all in anyway.

Oestrogen Hormones play a huge role in an individual’s all round behaviour. Just before your period your oestrogen levels drop For me it is shocking that sharply and this causes as many men are serotonin levels to drop overweight and obese in as well. Now the drop in this country as women. serotonin levels is God gave man the far especially important easier deal when it came here as that’s the to being at a healthy hormone when at weight. I predict that if a decent levels makes you product gets released feel good and happy. that helps women with When it’s low we feel, their menstrual cycle well, pretty crap about cravings then the everything. Guess what, percentage of overweight one of the quickest ways and obese women will to get those pre-period “It’s ok mate, I am sure she loves your amazing personality!” drop sharply, leaving just low levels of serotonin a high percentage of back up is to eat sugary/fatty foods. This drop in overweight lazy men in their wake. Perhaps all you ladies serotonin is literally nagging you relentlessly to eat that out there should pass 50 Shades of Grey to your partners, naughty high calorie food. The problem is once you have to see if they get the hint. one naughty snack that peaks your blood sugar levels, which then will sharply drop again and that alone will Adam Cochrane is proven weight loss and toning make your body crave more naughtiness! Seductive Styling Getting close to the one you love this Valentine’s Day means making sure your hair smells and looks fantastic. Seduce them with sensual waves, and soft styles.

S

hine sprays and serums are a fantastic product to cheat your way to shiny and glossy hair. Nothing oozes more sex appeal than hair that reflects the light. Add a few drops of serum to your hands to warm, and then apply to the mid lengths and ends to avoid greasy roots. Shine spray can work well on fine hair, spray at arm’s length and use to smooth any flyaways. Preparing a special meal or getting ready for a big night out? Pin and leave curls to cool completely and spray with a little of your favourite perfume before releasing them just before the big event. As the temperature rises the scent of the perfume will have even the most reluctant of romeo’s wanting to get closer. Avoid any heavy styling products such as gels and strong-hold hairsprays, as it’s not fun getting in a tangle and ending up with nasty knots. Make sure you deep condition your hair the evening before to guarantee soft, flowing hair. Stick to easy, casual styles that are low maintenance, and beg to be touched. A hair do that looks like it’s balancing precariously on a hairpin won’t give that carefree appeal. Why not try a low-slung bun? • Sweep hair to the side, and secure with a hairband just below your ear. It looks great if you curl your hair before to boost texture and volume. • Take pieces of your hair and randomly pin around into the bun shape. Backcomb slightly to give the illusion of more hair. • Spray lightly with hairspray and pull some tendrils down to frame your face.

I

f you need to kiss your hair better why not try out a hot oil treatment, it’s the perfect way to pamper hair and show it you care. This treatment takes about 30 minutes in total, and will help nourish hair. • Take a large bowl, fill with boiling water, then take another smaller bowl and add a small amount of oil. Pop the small bowl in the large bowl, allowing the oil to warm. • Apply the oil to the roots and scalp of the hair using cotton wool. • Massage into your hair and scalp, do this for around 10 minutes. • Place a shower cap over the head, or if you don't have one cling film can be wrapped around. This helps the head ‘warm’, meaning the penetration of the oil is greater, VOILA better hair! Leave for around 10-15 mins. • When removing the oil, put shampoo on the hair first with NO WATER, this helps the shampoo get rid of the oil.

So whether you are treating that someone special, or just having some well-earned ‘me’ time, spread the love with some handy hair hints this Valentine’s Day.

Midlife Madness

I

Relighting the Fire

am actually talking about the flames of passion here not getting a good blaze going in the grate. I am talking about those heady, passionate days of a new relationship – you know when you couldn’t keep your hands off each other and would leap home to bed immediately after work, at lunchtime if you could and when showers before work were a whole different sort of experience!

Another friend of mine said she tried to liven things up by watching raunchy movies and I guess it worked as they were so caught up in the passion of the moment they went straight up to bed. Unfortunately they found their ten year old watching the movie in the morning! Well that’s the kind of thing that can lead to a call from social services for goodness sake. Then there is the idea of dressing in … ‘not a lot’ to surprise my chap when he comes home, but let’s be honest, I’d have to be darned sure when I answered the door in my ‘scanties’ that it was going to be him –not one of the kids (aargghh cringe) and that he was alone, not with his boss, friend or, perish the thought, his mother, as I tried to look alluring in my Ann Summers get up! Maybe it’s not a good plan after all!

But it’s hard to keep passion alive AND deal with all the mundane aspects of living with someone. Perhaps that is why affairs are often thought of as being all about the passion – because probably they are. It is different when you pick up each others dirty pants from the floor, clean the loo and have replaced sexy nightwear long ago with fleecy PJs! Remember those times when you were going on a ‘hot’ date and how you would plan exactly what you were going to wear, including the carefully selected drop dead sexy, chosen especially, underwear. How you would make sure that all the important places were shaved and plucked and polished and buffed, and spend ages doing hair and make-up in the hope you would wow him. Well it’s kind of hard to achieve the same effect when you share each others home, life and notably bathroom. Oh and of course, we are both 20 years older than we were back then!

So this Valentine’s day I will try to be romantic but I think a little traditional – you know a meal out somewhere cosy and romantic with a nice ambience and food that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg - a challenge in itself! I’ll dress to impress in something that makes me look great, in an effortless way obviously, and I won’t even worry about the contradiction in wearing ‘hold myself in pants’ and a ‘push myself up and out bra! Yes, you’re right, it all sounds like far too much effort so it could be an M & S dinner for two in our fleecy pyjamas! Who says romance is dead?

Somehow it’s so easy to slip into a routine of dinner and TV - and while I might get excited about an early night – it’s really because I want to curl up in bed with a good book. So many aspects of family life seem to have been passion killers, the toddler who always chooses the wrong moment to wander into our room or the teenager who would go out for the evening but seemed to have a sixth sense about when to ring to say they needed a lift! I have a friend, a little more adventurous than me I may add, who tried to spice things up a little and her advice to me was to make sure I knew how to unlock the handcuffs before using them! And I would blush if I told you what happened with an ‘electronic device’ she once experimented with! But despite the summer of Fifty Shades, when my fella suggests ice cream for dessert I think ‘oh goody I hope we’ve got strawberries to go with it’ – am I odd I ask myself? 26

Chasing Challenges I’ve just returned from a holiday to Cape Town and was inspired to write my latest article for Affinity. Whilst on holiday my husband and I decided to climb up to the top of Table Mountain. He assured me it was 'more of a walk than a climb' so being a trusting wife I believed him....silly me! The mountain stands a very proud 1085 metres tall and the side of the mountain is somewhat steep! So

our 'gentle walk' turned into a four legged scramble up the side of the mountain. Needless to say we made it to the top having met a not so friendly poisonous snake on the way up. The views were spectacular but the best bit was the achievement felt at reaching the top, hence where the inspiration came from to write this article.

Three Peaks This is a world famous mountain race where the participants take on three of the highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland in 24 hours. Obviously the three mountains in 24 hrs is for experienced climbers but there is nothing to say that you couldn't do the three peaks over a longer time frame. The three mountains are Ben Nevis, Scotland 1344m, Scarfell Pike, England 978m and Snowdon, Wales 1085m. Perhaps climb all three within the next year. What a great way to enjoy what Great Britain has to offer. Find out more at : www.thethreepeakschallenge.co.uk

The Great Wall of China Marathon There are now 3 different distances that can be done as part of this event; 7.5km fun run, a half marathon and a full marathon. There are 5164 steps on the Great Wall of China and the event encompasses these steps as well as surrounding rice fields and local villages. The events are a test of physical strength and endurance but what better way to experience this magnificent sight than to be part of an international running event. Tough Mudder Now, when it comes to ultimate challenges this one normally features somewhere near the top, if not at the top! It is an endurance event like no other. There are numerous Tough Mudder events throughout the world but our most local event this year is held on 4th and 5th May in Kettering, Northants. The course consists of approximately 22 obstacles which have the most horrifying names such as Trench Warfare, Walk The Plank, Fire Walker and Electric Eel, but once you have beaten all odds and completed the course you are defined as being a ‘Tough Mudder’ and gain ‘bragging rights’. This event is certainly not for the faint hearted but if you are a bit of an exercise nut and fancy a real challenge of mental and physical strength then check out their website www.toughmudder.co.uk One of the lovely trainers from our studio, Shaun will be taking part in this year’s Tough Mudder, so we’d like to wish him all the very best of luck! We’re looking forward to seeing the photos and hearing all about it. Go for it Shaun!

Race For Life 2013 Every year the Race For Life takes place throughout the UK, including a race in Bedford along the Embankment and through Russell Park. The 5km run has been a strong feature of a lot of women’s fitness calendars over the past 10 years. If you’ve never joined in before then perhaps this could be your year. The registration opens any day now but you can register interest on the website now and you will be informed when the official registration begins. www.raceforlife.cancerresearchuk.org

I hope these have inspired you to find a fitness challenge of your own to achieve over the coming year. If we can help you to achieve a fitness challenge then please feel free to get in touch at jules@hollgroup.com or visit our website www.hollfitness.co.uk Happy Challenges!

The 10 Commandments on Dating After Divorce

No one wants to find themselves suddenly and unexpectedly thrust back onto the single scene after a marriage/long term relationship break up but the reality is it’s happening more and more. It may take a while and only you will know when you’re ready to start dating again but once you are take a look at our Ten Commandments on ‘Dating after Divorce’ and watch your love life flourish.

1

you’re honest when asked point blank. Don't equivocate, don't change the subject, and don't make up some elaborate ruse. If the date proves successful, and more follow, you'll eventually be exposed for the liar that you are. And, besides, if your date can't accept you exactly the way you are, then you're better off finding someone who isn't so superficial.

Thou Shalt Not Ignore Thy Date Paying close attention to your date is not up for discussion. There are some people when on a date feel like they have to leer at every attractive person that walks through the door – this is a NO NO! Most dates would get offended by this sort of behaviour, taking it as a personal insult to themselves. So unless you're intent on hurting your companion's feelings, keep your eyes and ears directed at your date at all times. If you make your date feel like they're the only person in the room, you'll have gone a long way towards living up to your role as the perfect date.

2

Thou Shalt Not Lie First dates are all about getting to know each other and being honest. If you happen to be out of a job, living with your parents, or hard up for cash, by all means don't lie about it. You can omit the information, so long as

3 32

Thou Shalt Not Talk About Thy Ex Whether you've just broken up, happened to run into your ex that day, or just can't help going on about the past, talking about your ex is a first date faux pas. The last thing your date wants to hear about is how horrible or great your ex was. Many people think that dredging up a former love will somehow make them seem more desirable. This couldn't be further from the truth. Your date is more likely to think that you're having a problem letting go and are on the rebound.

Affinity February 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/01/2013 16:32 Page 31

4 5

9

Thou Shalt Not Become Intoxicated Even if you're not driving; excessive consumption of alcohol is another NO NO on a first date. When we’ve drunk too much we all say and do things that we wake up in the morning and regret, perhaps not the kind of impression you warn to give on a first date. Thou Shalt Not Show Up Late When it comes to dating, timeliness is next to godliness. The worst thing you can do to your date is keep them waiting. Nobody likes to sit around wondering whether they've been stood up, especially if they're already nervous about going out with someone for the first time. Before heading out for the date, make sure you have scheduled plenty of time to get ready, get to where you need to be etc.You should also avoid scheduling any other activities for at least one hour before your date.

6

Thou Shalt Not Commit Road Rage If you are transporting your date from one destination to another, don’t become your usual angry self if another car cuts you up, act as if nothing happened. Do not, and we repeat, do not proceed to chase down the offender or slam on your brakes to get revenge. Not only will your date be paralysed with fear for his or her safety; he or she will remain uncomfortable for the duration of your date which will probably be your first and last date together.

Thou Shalt Not Become a Prima Donna If "I want" figures prominently on your list of most frequently used phrases, then prepare to monitor your behaviour during date hours. Bossing your date around or pouring on the old "bitch and moan" routine when you don't get your own way are sure-fire ways to spoil a romantic mood. If you have your heart set on doing something particular, take the lead-just make sure your date is fine with your arrangements. If, on the other hand, you've let your date take control, either voice your concern straight away or just pretend you're enjoying the twohour hike in the midday sun they’ve arranged! The Prima Donna attitude will make you seem spoiled, selfish, and definitely not second date material.

10

Thou Shalt Not Talk about Marriage and Starting a Family Few things are more frightening than going on a first date and being confronted with the issues of marriage and family. Before sizing up your date for marriage potential, take a breather and put things in perspective. You've only just met a little while ago. If you happen to be looking for Mr/s Right, keep your plans to yourself or you’ll risk scaring off potential suitors. Remember, whatever will be, will be. Grilling your date about their desire to have kids will only make you seem foolish and desperate. If you want to find out whether someone would make a good husband or wife, try studying their behaviour instead. Actions will always speak much louder than words.

7

Thou Shalt Not Come on Too Strong It's considered in very bad taste to make lewd comments about your date's appearance, touch them without permission, or insinuate wanting to get more sexual. Unless you're looking for nothing more than a basic wham-bam-Thank you-mam which, by the way, you're still not likely to score using these tactless methods -- keep your sexually charged particles in line.

8

Thou Shalt Not Use Thy Blackberry In this high tech modern age it’s very difficult, but in the name of LOVE deactivate your phone while on your date. Should your friends be trying to reach you they can leave a message. Using a mobile phone during your date can be a major turnoff. By talking on the phone, you're saying that your date is not significant enough to captivate your attention, implying that your work and friends are much more important. That's not exactly the message you want to convey to someone you want to get to know better. If you cared enough to go on the date, keeping things lively should be your top priority.

Dating after divorce can be hard and even a little awkward at first, but it can also be fun, exciting, passionate and life affirming. Listen to your heart and take things slow – It may not seem it at the time but divorce can be the best thing to happen to you as it allows you a second chance at love and life! True love is out there!

Dining at the Waterfront

Affinity February 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/01/2013 16:32 Page 33

W

ith views overlooking the lake, the AA Rosette Waterfront Restaurant at Wyboston Lakes is the ideal place to go for a truly enjoyable dining experience, whether it be just the two of you, family or friends the warm friendly atmposphere and the freshly cooked mouthwatering dishes will guarantee you have the perfect dining experience. We went along to try it for ourselves and we weren’t dissapointed! The welcome was warm and friendly and our table which overlooked the lake was just perfect. We could choose from the Table d’hote menu (three courses for £24) or the À la carte menu, we both decided on dishes from the À la carte. Whilst waiting for our starters our drinks were complimented with appetisers of rustic breads and homemade dips including a delicious pesto one. My choice of starter was a Wyboston Lake Salad (home smoked chicken, herb dressing and bacon chips), the dressing complemented the tender smoked chicken perfectly. Beef carpaccio, with jerusalem artichoke, parmasean cream, mizuna leaves and chilli oil was my husband’s choice, the meat was perfectly sliced and the chilli oil which had a subtle kick to it enhanced the flavour of the meat and certainly didn’t disappoint. Grilled fillet of scottish salmon with beetroot, chicory and mandarin salsa followed. This was a delicious dish, the mandarin salsa with the chicory and salmon was delightful. My husband had pan seared pork fillet, roasted squash and braised potatoe topped with a hazelnut dressing, the pork was tender (as pork fillet should be) this was a creative union of flavours . Desserts certainly didn’t dissapoint. Caramilised rice pudding with blackberry compote was food heaven and the pistachio parfait with blondie and chocolate fondue looked far too good to eat – but I did..…and it was adorable (No counting calories tonight!) Our overall verdict: Service was impeccable, presentation perfect and food delicious, but don’t just take my word for it go and experience it for yourself.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

T

he Chinese New Year 2013 starts on February 10th and this year it’s the Year of the Snake. The festival falls on the first day of the first Chinese month (usually in late January and early February), and ends with a Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day (24th February).

Strengths of the Snake They often have a good temper and a skill at communicating but say little. They possess gracious morality and great wisdom. They are usually financially secure and do not have to worry about money. They have tremendous sympathy for others and would like to take actions to help their fellow human beings. They are determined to accomplish their goals and hate to fail. Although they look calm on the surface, they are intense and passionate. They have a rich source of inspiration and understand themselves well. They are people of great perception.

The festival is celebrated grandly and extensively across the country. Various cultural activities such as lighting fireworks, dragon dancing, lion dancing and other traditional performances, are arranged in parks and streets in cities and towns everywhere. From the first day of the Chinese New Year to the 15th day, Chinese people go to visit friends and relatives. New Year greetings are given to each other, and lucky money is given to children with the hope that it will bring them good luck.

Weaknesses of the Snake They are likely to be jealous and suspicious. They should be cautious about what they discuss with others, as it might cause them to lose friendship and opportunities. They tend to overdo things. They prefer to rely on themselves and have doubts about other people's judgment. They are courteous with polite manners, but they can be headstrong. They are fickle and usually have problems in relationships or marriage.

People Born Under The Snake In the Chinese zodiac, the Snake is listed after the Dragon, but its’ place and its’ significance as a symbol of worship, is far less than that of the Dragon. It carries the meanings of malevolence, cattiness and mystery, as well as acumen, divination and the ability to distinguish herbs. In some places, people believe that a snake found in their court can bring delight. 42

February Tips... ⧫ Continue to dig over existing beds and borders, again incorporating as much organic matter as you can. ⧫ Although temperatures should start to rise this month, there is still a risk of frost and even snow. Protect vulnerable plants, pots and taps from frost by wrapping insulation, such as garden fleece around them and check pots and containers are raised off the ground if possible. ⧫ Start to sow summer bedding in a heated greenhouse ⧫ When the weather allows, carry on clearing paths, check walls (but avoid concreting until there is no chance of frost), clean and insulate greenhouses and ensure heaters are working properly. ⧫ Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

W

Flower of the Month

ith Valentine’s day upon us this month what could be more apt than the violet, one of our most beautiful and romantic flowers, complete with heart shaped leaves, they were often given as a love token in days gone by. Gardeners will be familiar with them as common bedding and pot plants. The common garden varieties are the result of mixing and crossing some of the most beautiful wild species, of which there are many, with colours ranging from the famed violet through various shades of blue, yellow and white. It is an easy plant to grow and to manage and once established it will spread well. They prefer shade and require very little care. Outside the garden, wild violets grow on arable and waste land, and can be found all over the world.

Learning the Language of Love One of the odd things about the English language, which in many ways is a tremendously rich language that has multiple words for almost everything, is that it has relatively few words for ‘Love’. The Greeks by comparison have different words for four distinct types of love.

Greek words for love Storge

Eros

used to describe natural affection, between parents and children for example

is the word you may be most familiar with and is used for intimate love and implies sensual desire and longing.

Philia

Agape

often used to describe affection between friends or family and requires virtue and familiarity, loyalty is implied but the word can also be used to describe enjoyment or pleasure in an activity

implies a deeper truer love than just attraction and is used to describe religious devotion or ‘love’

56

Affinity February 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/01/2013 16:34 Page 55

It is not just the Greek language either but in Spanish, Italian and many other languages there are numerous different words that we would end up translating simply as ‘love’. It is strange that we would say we ‘love’ our partners and children, our good friends and even our pets, and yet we would also say we ‘love’ our football team our favourite TV programme, film or celebrity and even our favourite food or drink.

affirm them in a positive way as often as we can, without being completely silly about it. Affirmations work best when they are positive, simple and clear. So if a child has just painted a picture you can say you like the picture but you can also say that it’s great they are so creative. You can remind them that they are clever, hard working, sociable or affirm any other qualities that you notice.

But does it matter – surely we all know that when we say we love chocolate it’s different from saying we love a person? Well in many ways it doesn’t matter but what we are learning more and more is that language is indeed powerful. Think about how you feel when someone says you look good in a particular dress, or even that they like something you have done or made. Or by contrast think how you would feel if someone tells you that you don’t look well. Like it or not the words we use are powerful.

When we live with people day in and day out it is so easy to see all the little things that may irritate us and we forget all the great things they do – especially true with partners. But if you start thinking about the good qualities often the other things don’t seem like such a big deal anyway. Maybe we’ve stopped saying thanks for some things and just take them for granted – I must own up to never doing any of the routine stuff on my car – filling the washer bottle or putting air in the tyres, but it’s easy just to expect it to happen but still nag about the fact that their dirty washing may not hit the laundry bin!

Affirmation - An affirmation is an assertion that something is true or exists

So if your partner comes in late from work you can grumble or you can choose to affirm that they are a hard working person who takes their responsibilities seriously -which presumably was one of the things you liked about them in the first place.

The power of words can be very evident in relationships. I am sure that if you think about your circle of family and friends you can quickly think of someone who always seems to make you feel better, well the chances are they will use language positively to give you affirmations. This impacts us – we all feel better when we receive compliments, or positive affirmations, as long as we think they are sincere, though we may sometimes struggle to accept them, in fact lots of people will even deny them. I told a friend recently that she was looking particularly slim and she then spent ten minutes telling me how much weight she had put on.

Like lots of other things when you start looking for the positive and focussing on that, you will find that you notice more and more that is positive. But of course we also have to remember that it is not just the words we say that matter – I am sure we have all had the experience of someone telling us something and we know straight away from their tone of voice or body language that it is not something they mean.

So apart from the actual words of love we can and do use other ways to let people know we love and care about them. We all know that children grow up as more confident, well rounded individuals if they grow up in atmospheres of praise and affirmation. It is something that comes quite naturally to most of us to praise small children for their achievements, but somehow it seems to become harder when they get older - yet that is often when they need to hear positive affirmations even more, as physical affirmations, hugs cuddles etc, often reduce. Sometimes people come to me complaining that their teenagers never say anything nice but when we talk a little it often becomes evident that the adults would actually never say anything affirming to the teenagers either. Cultures of criticism simply breed more criticism. That is one of the downward spirals that can happen so easily in classrooms, workplaces or relationships.

According to A. Barbour, author of Louder Than Words: Nonverbal Communication, the total impact of a message breaks down like this: 7% verbal (words) 38% vocal (volume, pitch, rhythm, etc) 55% body movements (mostly facial expressions) So this Valentines day don’t worry about choosing elaborate ways to tell your loved ones how you feel, simply use the power of language to demonstrate that love by giving them positive affirmations – and not just on Valentines Day, this is something that can enrich all your relationships all year round! For more help and advice on how affirmations can help you achieve your goals and improve your relationships contact Attuned Education

But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be like that. We can make a conscious decision to demonstrate the love and affection we feel for others by making sure we

How to stand out at an interview

W

competency based which will mean you answer questions around "real life" examples of your work experience and this will involve you talking through scenarios in your current and previous roles.

ell that was a quick month and "Jobuary" as we call it at Advancing People is often the key month people start thinking of their new dream job and we were not disappointed! We have seen a lot of activity so far and record amounts of candidates registering with us, updating their CV's and seeking advice to kick start their career.

Typically you will be asked about your: ∎ ∎ ∎ ∎

Strengths Weaknesses Biggest achievements to date Preferred management styles that you respond well to ∎ Experience of dealing with an issue of conflict at work and how you overcame this?

You can have the best CV in the world, that will get you in front of potential new employers but arguably the most important part of finding a new role is being prepared for your interviews and making sure you stand out for the right reasons...

Closing the interview can also be beneficial if it feels right and you are comfortable doing this. Make sure the employer knows you are interested and you want the job!

The interview all starts with knowledge as this is true power - research the employer by using their website, linked in, Facebook and Twitter can also show how they present their brand and what it means. Another clever tactic can be to phone someone that works at the potential employer already to get an " inside track" on what the employer is really like to work for and what attributes makes someone successful with them.

"I am really keen on the opportunity we have discussed today and where do we go from here ?" Or if you are feeling braver, "What reservations do you have about me doing the role if any, and when can I see you again?"

Make sure you understand the job description if there is one, as this will often form as much part of the interview as your CV itself.

Good luck putting this into practice and if you have any questions just get in touch...

The most common type of interview currently is 58

Boogie Nights was the West End’s original jukebox musical, conceived by Jon Conway and Shane Richie in 1997, and followed the hilarious and heart-warming story of Roddy O’Neil. Set in a provincial British town in the height of the disco seventies it completed 5 UK tours after its London success and has also toured the world. Boogie Nights returns in 2013 as a remixed concert version of the ultimate party show! Join the original characters for a fantastic evening’s entertainment featuring live music, multimedia and no less than 70 of your favourite hit songs from the 70’s. The Osmonds will return from the USA as special guest stars, performing not just their own hits such as Crazy Horses and Love Me For A Reason, but also a range of classic hits. Jimmy Osmond first appeared in the award-winning Boogie Nights in 2004 and now for the first time ever he and his brothers will appear in a musical

together. Jimmy told us “I’m thrilled to once again be a part of the amazing energy of this great show. My brothers, Merrill and Jay and I had so much fun on our 2012 recordbreaking tour, I’m excited they have agreed to join in on the fun and continue the party! They are really looking forward to doing a little something different than our usual concert appearances.”

Debs will be played by Louisa Lytton who played Ruby in EastEnders. After a stint on The Bill as PC Beth Green, Louisa was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. Boogie Nights – the 70’s Musical in Concert will mark Louisa’s musical debut and she can’t wait to belt out I Will Survive and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. Joining the stellar cast are the X Factor finalists Andy Abraham, who will play tough guy soul singer Spencer and perform Barry White classics such as You’re My First, My Last, My Everything and Chico who was also a finalist on Dancing On Ice 2012 and will play Terry, bringing his energetic dance moves to such hits as Le Freak.

Gareth Gates will play heartthrob Dean, delighting his many fans who have seen him in West End classics such as Les Misérables and Legally Blonde, with a vocal range of pop classics covering If You Leave Me Now, Disco Inferno and a feature with The Osmonds including a cover of Donny’s Puppy Love. Gareth says; “I’m really excited about getting back on stage to sing all the hits from this era, as a lot of the tracks are personal favourites of mine. It’s going to be a fantastic show.”

The all star line up is completed by a theatrical first when Shane Richie Junior takes over the role of Roddy, as created by his father, the original seventies bad boy. It is the first time a role created by an actor has been inherited by his son and 22 year old Shane Junior will prove to be a real chip off the old block as he powers through hits such as Blame it on the Boogie. With a cast of 15 musicians, singers and dancers Boogie Nights – the 70’s Musical in Concert features all your favourites from the original show including Y.M.C.A. and Happy Days, We Are Family and Boogie Wonderland and promises a party atmosphere you won’t want to miss.

Welcome to the musings of Yummy Mummy. Living in Bedford she is married to ‘The Husband’ and together they have 4 children, Rafferty 8, Violet 6, Roman 4 and baby Clementine. All my views are my own and are not intended to offend anyone but alas I may frustrate you as I certainly do myself and no doubt those around me at times. I would love to hear from you, your views, questions or indeed just to share your experiences of trying to be a Yummy Mummy. Email me at info@affinitymag.co.uk

Love is in the air!

A

aah the whiff of romance is in the air – well at least I hope that’s what it is rather than Clementine needing a nappy change! I have never been one to go out on Valentines night as I think there is nothing worse than being surrounded by gooeyeyed couples, some of them you know are feeling under pressure to be uncharacteristically romantic! It’s like New Years Eve when you go out and pay three times the amount for the privilege, only to try and force yourself to have a good time with all the ‘amateurs’, i.e. the people that don’t go out very often - mind you I fall into that category now!!!

your lack of flowers – go offline on 14th February! Apart from the flowers I really believe it’s the small gestures that keep the romance alive - I would be highly suspicious if The Husband presented me with an expensive gift and probably get cross as we are meant to discuss all high value purchases together – the poor man can’t win sometimes!! When he proposed he daren’t buy me a ring as he was sure that whatever he chose would be wrong so he wisely suggested we went ring shopping together! A well chosen card is a must, I make sure I get an appropriately worded card – and for once it is not a sarcastic jokey one like all his birthday cards!! If it is a work day, I have put a chocolate treat, as he is a chocoholic, hidden in the boot of his car and messaged him on the day as a surprise or if your husband has a packed lunch – a little gift in there is nice!

Also with child number three’s birthday being on the 13th February we are usually too knackered to celebrate again the following day. He was due on the 16th but I was convinced he would come on Valentines as child number one was a Fireworks baby and then child number four came on my birthday! Don’t get me wrong, we celebrate Valentine’s Day as I love the excuse to be spoilt! So rather than expecting The Husband to try and inject some romance unprompted at other times of the year he really does not have an excuse to forget! BC (before children!) I would get a lovely bouquet of flowers delivered to work and come on ladies, who doesn’t want that to happen?! You sit there at your desk as the receptionist brings up red roses, bouquets etc and you feign ignorance with your best nonchalant face but secretly you are praying they are for you! Then you try, but fail, not to look smug when they are! We now have the added benefit to show them off by posting a picture on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and any other social media you can find! I strongly suggest that if you are not into Valentines or are disappointed by

Of course you should exchange gifts, which we do in the evening once the children are in bed and over a nice dinner (thanks M&S!). There are plenty of places to choose from locally and we will feature some of these on our Facebook page in the lead up to Valentines for you to get ideas.....oh or to subtlety hint to your other half!! GO OVER TO OUR FACEBOOK AND ‘LIKE’ US FOR INSPIRATION AND REGULAR COMPETITIONS! www.facebook.com/AffinityMag and also post your Valentine ideas and stories on there, we’d love to see them and any pictures (but nothing rude!!!).

In Love with a Supermodel‌

The Lamborghini Aventador

Affinity February 2013 _Layout 1 copy 17/01/2013 16:35 Page 63

A

km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration figure of just 2.9 seconds and the top speed of 350 km/h (217 mph) do not fully describe the Aventador’s extreme performance, and yet fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are down by around 20 percent compared with its predecessor, despite the considerable increase in power (+8%).

Lamborghini is really good at creating sinister super sports cars, but it is equally as talented at naming them. "Aventador" was the name of a bull that entered into battle on October 1993 at the Saragossa Arena, earning the "Trofeo de la Peña La Madroñera" for its outstanding courage. Having the courage to go against the world’s super cars is exactly what Lamborghini are doing!

The ISR transmission is unique among road-going vehicles, guaranteeing the fastest shifting time (only 50 milliseconds) and a highly emotional shift feel, while the lightweight chassis, with pushrod suspension, delivers absolute handling precision and competition-level performance. The expressively-designed interior offers hitech features ranging from the TFT cockpit display with Drive Select Mode System.

s it’s the month of LOOOOOVE what more could we dream of than being whisked away into the sunset in the newest offering from Lamborghini, featuring an earth shattering 700hp V12 and the highest power to weight ratio of any car in its’ class. Yes, this is the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4.

With the Aventador LP 700-4, Automobili Lamborghini is redefining the very pinnacle of the world super sports car market – brutal power, outstanding lightweight engineering and phenomenal handling precision are combined with peerless design and the very finest equipment, to deliver an unparalleled driving experience. With the Aventador, Lamborghini is taking a big step into the future – and building on the glorious history of the brand with the next automotive legend.

President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann, says “The Aventador is a jump of two generations in terms of design and technology, it’s the result of an entirely new project, but at the same time it’s a direct and consistent continuation of Lamborghini’s brand values. It is extreme in its’ design and its’ performance, uncompromising in its’ standards and technology, and unmistakably Italian in its’ style and perfection. Overall, the dynamics and technical excellence of the Aventador LP 700-4 makes it unrivalled in the worldwide super sports car arena.”

The technology package of the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 is utterly unique. It is based on an innovative monocoque made from carbon-fiber that combines exceptional lightweight engineering with the highest levels of stiffness and safety. The new twelve-cylinder with 6.5 liters’ displacement and 515 kW / 700 hp brings together the ultimate in high-revving pleasure with astonishing low-end torque. Thanks to a dry weight of only 1,575 kilograms (3,472 lb), which is extremely low for this class of vehicle, the weight-to-power ratio stands at only 2.25 kilograms per hp (4.96 lb/hp). Even the fantastic 0-100

Everyone has to admit that the Lamborghini Aventador is a cool super car and despite its’ £201,900 price tag, the demand for it is pretty high. Currently, the waiting list is set at about 12 months, but it was recently announced that the company is working on reducing the waiting period, especially now, when the demand is almost double what it was. Currently, Lamborghini is producing a total of 600 Aventador units a year, but they are working on investing in a new plant so that they can increase production capacity. I had better get my name down then! 65

Fry’s

footie corner

F

ebruary brings an end to the mad rush of the January transfer window. As usual, there was a lot of activity at the end of the month rather than the beginning with clubs jockeying for position and paying over the odds for their purchases. A lot of managers dread the January window because they know that clubs are desperate and bid over the top for their players. A manager is then left with a weakened squad, but for the clubs, sometimes it has to be a business decision rather than a football decision. Most clubs up and down the country are struggling for money, especially in the lower reaches of the football leagues with only a certain amount of your income able to be spent on wages. It doesn’t apply in the Championship and the Premier League where wages are exaggerating out of all proportion. The rich are getting richer and the poor are struggling to survive. However, this does not mean the end of transfers. Within a week of this month, the emergency loan window reopens and this means any club in the Football League can loan from another club for up to 93 days. A lot of clubs can utilise this system to boost their play-off push. Clubs pay a loan fee rather than a transfer fee for a short term loan and it can often be the difference between promotion and mid-table obscurity.

www.theposh.com

FIFA, the governing body of football, are against this and are trying to ban it within a year or two, which if they succeed, will make it very difficult for some clubs to survive because the summer and January windows will be the only ones left for them to do business. However, this will benefit football to me. Managers will have to develop their own players within the youth system, spend more time on the training pitch and nurture the talent already at the club. I don’t necessarily think it is a bad idea for football, but it is a bad idea to have any transfer restriction in the lower leagues. Often League Two and League One clubs have got into trouble because they are unable to sell players to boost their coffers. This is more important. I think we should scrap the window system altogether and allow clubs at that level to do business to keep themselves in business.

Vienna Coffee, cake, coffee, more cake – there are plenty of opportunities to spend time gazing into each others’ eyes in Vienna's elegant coffee houses. Going for a February weekend means you'll have a good chance of snow, but that will just add to the romance. If you're a couple who thrive on intellectual discussion, drop into Café Central the preferred hangout of Lenin and Trotsky in their pre-revolution days, or for more basic stimulation try a hot Buchtel (jam-filled bun) at Café Hawelka.

Forget worries about rampaging stag parties – Prague has withstood far worse in its’ 1,000-year history, and its’ charms remain undiminished. Sip cocktails among the beautiful people, or plunder the impressive wine cellar at Monarch (Na Perstyne 15), before dinner at Nostress (Dusni 10), an elegant fusion restaurant.

Verona, Italy The home of the young lovers Romeo and Juliet, what city could be a better settingn for your Valentine’s Day escapade? The lead up to Valentine’s Day sees the city truly embrace the celebration of love, with a huge heart display in central piazza Dante amongst other elaborate decorations. Hi Delphi,

"poor" in other areas of their lives, not necessarily financially; perhaps their behaviour has been poor.

In my dream there is total darkness except for a small light hovering in the air. There were some women who I didn’t know around me, they were wearing tattered clothes but all had perfect makeup - my wife was also there and it was as if she did not know me. I was surrounded by an old crumbling brick wall, with a smaller wall inside and a huge metal-like fence with big long spikes at different angles. I could hear continuous screaming from behind the walls and thuds like the wall being hit. In some places old hands covered with blood were on the rim of the wall. I could not see the faces but the women around me kept telling me to do something to stop the screaming……some of the women began to float. My wife then woke me up as I had been screaming in my sleep!

There was a wall - and an old wall at that - in your dream; this emphasises the defences you may have been building over time, particularly if you've been going through a difficult time. But the wall is crumbling; you may be starting to realise that you need to break down the barriers you've created. The spikes echo the danger to yourself as well as others of keeping these defences in place. The next part of your dream sounds quite distressing, especially with the mention of screams and blood. Content such as this can be a sign you've been under a huge amount of stress and have been expected to make decisions to ‘save’ other people. In real terms, an example may be to ‘save’ jobs or even ‘save face’ with these women in question, especially as you mention faces a couple of times.

Daniel Delphi's interpretation Thank you for sharing your dream with me. The first thing I notice is that your dream is set in darkness except for the light hovering in the air. This may reflect there has been a dark period in your life, but acknowledging you are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

z

You say there were women around you whom you didn't know, who looked disheveled but had perfect make up. Strangers in dreams can suggest you are struggling to get close to people, or deliberately putting up a wall (emphasised by the wall mentioned later), perhaps to prevent them from getting to know you better.

z

z z

Wishing you sweet dreams

Delphi

I would like to thank you Delphi for the interpretation of this dream and it does make sense to me and to what is happening in my life at the moment. I am very impressed in how you picked up on things even though I have never met you. I will endeavour to put your tips into practice and see if this will help my stress levels. Thankyou

In your case it was a group of women; maybe you're finding it difficult to understand women in general (I'm sure some men would say that applies across the board!), or a specific group of women whom you don't want to admit there is an issue with (hence they appear as strangers).

Daniel My sparkling top tips: * Spend some time reflecting on who - or what - these women represent for you; if you have an idea who they may be, consider how your relationship with them may have changed of late, especially if a specific event (which caused the period of darkness mentioned at the beginning) had an impact on that. * Do you build up a brick wall when faced with a difficult situation? Your dream may be asking you to break down your defences and turn to people who you may fear losing if you don't. * Start to manage your stress, even if it’s just an hour a week to yourself to begin with. Go for a walk, read a book or spread the load in at least one part of your life if stress has taken its’ toll.

Perhaps there are women around you who you feel you should know and understand, but you are starting to feel you don't know them at all. This is emphasised by you not being able to see their faces later in the dream. Your wife behaves as if she doesn't know you; it's possible this echoes thoughts you've had of late, but may simply acknowledge a hope this never happens. As your wife appears in this dream, alongside these other women, I'm inclined to think they have a link to both of you, either socially or professionally. It's interesting that at the start of your dream the women's faces were made up but not their clothes, and its worth exploring why this might be. Perhaps you view these women as "false", or who put on a "face" around you. Their tattered clothes may then represent they are

Japanese Boro Patchwork J

ust when you think you’ve got a handle on things, something completely new to you comes along and makes you think again! For me, the arrival of a quilt sample at the shop for a workshop which will be held by Pam Wise, one of our longer-serving staff members, was an eyeopener. It’s a Japanese Boro quilt, westernised by Pam for lack of the original Japanese fabrics. So, what is Boro patchwork? It was time to delve into Japanese history Prior to the opening up of Japan to the west which began in 1870, the typical Japanese peasant family lived in what we would consider to be dire poverty. Under those circumstances nothing could be wasted, and clothes – and other textile-based necessities – were no

exception. ‘Boro’ is a Japanese word meaning “tattered rags”, and peasant women became experts at using any fabric they could find to patch clothes or futon covers which were torn, holed or were just wearing thin. Boro patching was also used to make clothes thicker, particularly in the colder north. Eventually ‘boro’ came to refer to the article that was being patched with the rags rather than to the rags themselves. Nearly all of the cotton cloth used in Japan before the Meiji period was locally produced by peasant women or imported from China. It was expensive and in short supply. Much of the cloth was dyed with indigo, produced in Shikoku. Eventually, modern weaving techniques and cheaper shipping reduced the price of cotton cloth and increased the availability, and boro work became less important, although it saw a revival following the Second World War. Today, boro futon covers, quilts and jackets are becoming popular again as both a fashion statement and as a nod to Japan’s past culture. The photo is of Pam’s boro quilt, called “The Bedfordshire Boro”.

Boro Quilting Workshop with Pam Wise Thursdays, February 21 and March 21, 2013 1.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Details on our website or call in at the shop!
