Having researched what really matters to gym-goers, Fitness First has reengineered the entire brand experience, from the quality of its facilities, to the people running its gyms, the training programmes it uses and the products and services that it offers. Fitness First is also working with world-class behavioural psycologists to crack what motivates people to excersice, in an effort to help more members visit more often - helping people to achieve their goals and go further in their lives.

“THE NEW PROGRAMME IS INSPIRED BY TEAM GB ATHLETES AND COACHES, HOW THEY COMPETE IN; FOCUSING ON FIVE KEY FITNESS DISCIPLINES WHICH ANY ELITE ATHLETE REQUIRES: SPEED, ENDURANCE, POWER, AGILITY AND STRENGTH PRO ATHLETE PROGRAMME

Following the announcement that Fitness First is the first ever official fitness partner to Team GB, Fitness First has rewritten the rules of fitness and created the Team GB Pro Athlete programme - to give members a taste of what training like a Team GB athlete could feel like!

Launched by Olympic medalists Micola Adams, Ed Clancy, Max Whitlock and Gemma Gibbons - the new programme is inspired by Team GB athletes and coaches, how they train and the Olympic sports they compete in; focusing on 5 key fitness requires: speed, endurance, power, agility and strength.

The 40 minute class consists of 3 key phases; training which centres around the 5 key disciplines; competition, competing in teams and finally, teamwork, learning the importance of working together to achieve the best possible results. A functional core workout follows each phase in order to strengthen the core, an attribute to successful athletic performance.

Myths Busted! Health, Fitness and Nutrition

The health and fitness industry is constantly plagued by a mix of different opinions. One month a new diet is all the rage and the next thing you know it’s really bad for you. It’s difficult to know what advice to take on board and what to discard. For health and fitness professionals it can be very frustrating when people constantly believe things that are not true. With the New Year here and everyone making resolutions to get fitter, healthier etc we take a look at the most common health, fitness and nutrition myths that just aren’t true. 1. Fat is bad for you You need fat in your diet, it has many benefits to the functions of the body. It helps with energy, vitamin absorption and insulation. Avoid trans fats and instead have a healthy balance of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fats. Top foods with healthy fats include uncooked olive oil, avocado and nuts. 2. Don’t eat carbs after six This is just too much of a blanket expression. Some people may need to eat carbs later on in the day if they train in the evenings or work shifts. Not having carbs after 6pm isn’t going to magically transform your body.

rapidly put muscle mass on. Weights are a fantastic way to tone and firm up your body.

6. Sit ups are the best thing for a toned stomach Many people will do sit ups incorrectly and they only focus on the upper part of their core which is an area most people use a lot anyway. The areas you need to focus on include your obliques, lower abdomen and lower back. Sit ups do not engage these other important areas.

3. Crash diets work Although FAD/crash diets will get you quick results they won’t be sustained. Some crash diets are not very good for you and should be approached with caution. Cutting essential nutrients out of your diet isn’t the way to go.

7. Going in the sauna is best for a hangover This is a very common misconception. If you go in the sauna you won’t sweat out the alcohol, all you are losing is water from your body, which is something you need to recover. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it will get rid of the water in your body. People that think going in the sauna will help a hangover could in fact be making it worse.

4. Cardio is best for losing weight Most people when they start off at the gym will just stick to cardio machines because they think it makes the biggest difference. When you exercise, the first thing your body uses as energy is sugar, for the average person this takes around 30 minutes to burn off. Within that time your body isn't even focusing on fat as an energy source. A much more efficient way if you are looking to lose weight is to start with weights and finish with cardio. 5. Weights will make women big Women generally don’t produce enough testosterone (muscle building hormone which is prominent in men) to

18

8. Sweating means you burn more calories How much you sweat depends on what type of exercise you are doing and how your body reacts to heat. When you sweat you are losing water not fat, it’s your body’s way of cooling you down. Sweating has nothing to do with

jan2015.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 18/12/2014 17:48 Page 17

14. Exercise alone will help you lose weight There is no point embarking on a gruelling exercise routine if you don’t change your diet. You need to do exercise to stay fit and healthy but what you eat will have a bigger impact on your weight.

fat loss or the amount of calories you burn. Some people just naturally sweat more than others.

9. You need to train every day to notice a difference When people get into a new exercise regime they often think they need to workout every day. Your body needs rest and if you train too hard your body won’t be able to recover. You don’t need to train every day of the week to notice a difference. 10. Doing cardio before weights is best If you start with weights you should be able to lift heavier weights as you won’t be tired from doing cardio. Moreover, if you have used all your energy up during cardio your technique may suffer when you come to do weights. You are also likely to burn more calories by doing weights first as you have the energy to put everything into each lift. Weight workouts will help you to burn off excess sugar and you will be using carbohydrates, when you do cardio you will burn more calories and can focus on fat burning.

11. All protein products are basically the same thing Protein brands can vary significantly. There are different types of protein that companies use such as whey, casein and soy. They can also vary the amount of protein/carbohydrates depending on the purpose of the protein. Choose a protein that will help you to achieve your health and fitness goals.

12. To lose weight you need to completely cut carbs Carbohydrates are an important part of your diet. Don’t completely cut out carbs from your diet, they are your main source of energy and you wouldn’t function very well without them. If you don’t eat carbs your body will begin to use fat and protein for energy.

13. The bigger you are the stronger you are When you see a huge guy or girl in the gym, don’t assume that they are stronger than you. For example, bodybuilders will look much bigger than weightlifters but who do you think has the strength to lift more weight?

15. You can target fat burn If you think that doing exercises in certain areas will help you target fat burn you are in denial. The body doesn't discriminate where it takes fat from and fat storage varies for different people. When you embark on a mission to lose weight you will be losing fat from all over your body. People think they can target specific areas because you appear to lose weight more in areas where there is naturally less fat. Targeting fat loss is physiologically impossible. 16. The heavier you are the fatter you are So many people judge improvement based only on weight. Weight isn’t always an accurate reflection of how well you are doing. If you are doing weights you may build some muscle which is heavier than fat. However, your body might be smaller and more toned. Choose an integrated approach to measuring your progress. Make a note of your body fat percentage and body measurements as well as your weight will give you a better indication of your progress. 17. You have to eat lots of fruit to be healthy When people want to eat healthy, one of the first things they do is stock up on lots of fruit. Fruit is good for you and you should have a few portions a day but don’t go overboard. Fruit is actually very high in sugar and some fruits can be high in calories. Vegetables have more beneficial vitamins and minerals and fewer calories than fruit.

18. Running is the best way to lose weight Many people start running as a way of losing weight and get frustrated when they don’t see any results. You need to run for at least 30 minutes before you start burning fat. Running is also a high impact sport that’s not great for your joints. Weight and interval training is a far more effective way of targeting fat. Running can definitely be beneficial if combined with other types of training. Midlife Madness

Pain but No Gain

I

have lived more years than I am prepared to state in this article, largely in the company of other girls and then women. Yes I have been fortunate enough to have had many good relationships with males too, father, brother, partner’s sons, friends and colleagues but in terms of closeness on the topic of this article it is with the women that I have bared my soul.

needs good undies and that turns our attention to what is under the dress and what may be on show should the dress come off! So let’s start with the whole issue of body hair and state for the record that this is natural and every woman has it. There it is! I’ve said it just in case any man reading this thinks that women are actually hairless, apart from on their heads where of course they are supposed to have long thick glossy silky locks.

I am talking simply of ‘beauty’, and though you may deny I think the vast majority of women want to look, and feel beautiful. In pursuit of this we spend a lot of time, effort, money and as we all know endure a not insubstantial amount of pain.

But most women somehow or other have got it in their heads that to be attractive is to be hairless. So we pluck and tweeze and shave and wax. The weird thing is that we seem to accept the pain so no one even moans abut it unless of course it is a man having some part of his anatomy waxed for charity then we can admit that the process is not uncomfortable but downright painful. I know men do shave too but usually it is confined to their faces and they don’t generally in my experience go for waxing and plucking with tweezers. The crazy thing about eyebrows is that we go and draw them on afterwards – how have we let ourselves be conned so much.

Some stuff is simple, we go shopping and its generally fun, we may spend more money than we intend searching for the outfit that will make our figure rival that of the latest female icon (and clearly that has changed in the course of my life from voluptuous to painfully thin, now yo yoing between a catwalk versus Dove campaign) but we absorb it all, do some complex mind maths and decide that given our natural limitations what we need is that particular dress to make us look awesome!! Providing of course that we breathe in for the entire day/evening. Or perhaps subject ourselves to some quick result diet and quite literally starve ourselves for a few days/weeks just to look good, which to my mind remains infinitely preferable to some detox colonic irrigation or worse!

Hair styles can be very costly but at least the level of pain seems to have decreased. Highlighting is relatively painless now but those of us old enough to remember when rubber style skull caps with holes and an item resembling a crochet hook were the fashionable requirements will know that it used to be a very painful process.

Then we get the shoes – more money and clearly they could have been designed as instruments of torture – ‘here take these pointed plat-formed high heeled shoes and walk for miles in them’ – I can almost hear a medieval torturer giving a gleeful cackle! You also have to bear in mind that if it is something ‘posh’ you know an ‘occasion’ then as a female you will probably freeze - unless it is in the height of summer - because you simply can’t ruin the look with a coat!!

But don’t get me wrong whilst I might not agree with the sentiments in the old song that said about women ‘Keep young and beautiful, it’s your duty to be beautiful!’ I do try to look at least presentable and though I will continue to enjoy a good pamper, my days of squeezing into a body con dress and tottering in six inch heels are definitely over. Frankly, whether it is because of my advancing years or growing feminist tendency if it’s going to involve pain I don’t really care about the gain!!

But that is only the beginning! For most of us a good outfit 20

Have a Happy

New Year H

Work makes you happier. It provides routine, structure and self-worth. Make sure you are in a job you enjoy. If you are not, make finding one that you do a priority for this year.

appiness, something we all strive for, has been shown to have many protective benefits for physical and mental health; studies show that happy people get sick less, recover faster from illness and even live longer.

Independence: Personal control in work makes you happier; there is better life satisfaction for those earning less but in control of their working practice than those who are richer but have less control.

There is a wealth of research that has been conducted into what causes happiness and how to achieve it. Indeed, studies show that happiness varies according to many correlating factors, including: genetics, health, age, money, relationships and even political persuasion. Broadly speaking there are a number of trends that can predict how happy people are likely to be: people tend to get happier as they get older, with a dip at the midlife crisis, and working makes people happy as do close relationships.

Relationships: Those with close relationships are happiest – try to see friends and family more in the New Year. Friendships: Research shows the closer people live to their friends, the happier they are – make new friends close to where you live. Get to know your neighbours better, try joining sports groups or taking up a hobby close to your home.

Dr Mo Zoha of Nightingale Hospital the leading independent mental health hospital in central London told us “Happier people tend to experience the same number of positive and negative events during their lives as those who are less happy, but they are more likely to interpret those events in a positive light. There are many things that we can all do to increase our happiness, regardless of life’s circumstances.”

Play to your strengths: Identifying your strengths and focus on developing these, either in work or a hobby. This will encourage you to become immersed in what you do and find life more gratifying. Altruism: It is proven to help focus beyond ourselves and enable us to be more connected with the world around us. In 2015, finding local charities, sports clubs or community organisations where you can donate your time, you might even start new friendships with local people.

Dr Zoha’s Top 15 Tips for achieving happiness in 2015

Money - does money buy you happiness? Those that spend their time and efforts seeking love rather than more money tend to be happier, particularly once they earn enough to pay for necessities. Focus on nurturing relationships rather than earning money in 2015. Enjoy the moment: Older people tend to be happier. It is thought that they are better at living in the present and better at controlling emotions, which we can all strive to achieve.

Be kind: Set yourself a weekly target for acts of kindness for friends, family, colleagues and strangers on the street. This will further increase your connection to the outside world.

24

Focus on the positives: Improving happiness levels can depend on how we focus our attention – being attentive

jan2015.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 18/12/2014 17:49 Page 23

Meditate: Regular meditation can help with positive mental health.

and focusing on one positive task helps us to enjoy the moment.

Positive memory: Those who are happier remember bad events in a more positive light – it is possible to focus on particular aspects of a memory to notice the positives more than negatives. Gratitude diary: You can retrain your mind to focus on the good things that happen rather than the bad, as well as stopping taking your blessings for granted by keeping a gratitude diary. Every day for 6 weeks jot down 5 things that happened that day for which you are grateful.

Say ‘thank you’: Expressing your gratitude for someone’s actions is the single most effective exercise in positive psychology. Saying thank you to even small acts and gestures will help improve gratitude levels. Use technology less: The less time you spend on using technology, the more you can carry out activities that help you engage with the world around you.” 25

WIN! WIN! WIN!

Luxury haircare brand SATINIQUE is giving one lucky Affinity reader the chance to win a bundle of their products which include a Revitalizing Mask, Extra Volume Shampoo, Extra Volume Conditioner, Volumising Mousse, Hi-Gloss Serum and Finishing Spray. SATINIQUE’s raison d’etre is to add power back into the hair. The key to SATINIQUE power lies with its patented ENERJUVE technology. ENERJUVE, a technology exclusive to the SATINIQUE brand and developed by Amway scientists, is a positively charged complex of strengthening lipids, creatine and 18-MEA, or 18-methyl eicosinoic acid, found only in hair. SATINIQUE products replace the compromised cell membrane at the site of damage and reinforce weakened bonds within the cortex. The ENERJUVE positive charge counteracts hair’s naturally negative charge and the result is quite literally, a new movement in hair. To be in with a chance of winning these products tell us “What is the key to SATINIQUE’s power?” and send your answer to affinitymagcomp@gmail.com - Good Luck!

Learning about Addictions and Compulsions A lot has been written about addictions and compulsions but much of what I have read has concentrated on either the process of becoming addicted, the impact that addictions have on the individual or family or specific detail about the substances that people commonly become addicted to – alcohol, nicotine or drugs of other kinds. In no way do I wish to minimise the devastating impact that addiction can have, which can truly ruin lives, cause premature death and much suffering not only for the individual but also for the family and may lead to criminal charges. But the causes that underlie addiction and compulsion are incredibly similar yet it appears little attention has been given to them. A recent quote that I read got me thinking about this and the emotions which cause some people to seek relief in a substance, whether cigarettes, alcohol, food, prescription or illegal drugs cause others to seek increasing doses of that emotion. In order to feel healthy and be functional in emotional terms we need to have a sense of self. Children develop this as they grow up and hopefully experience love attachment and acceptance form parents and carers so that they can

develop a sense of self-worth and self-respect. We are all aware that some children are not as lucky as others and many have to cope with parents who cannot or do not give children what they need. Some, as they grow will seek out relationships with others which may bring some healing but sadly others will seek out situations, usually subconsciously that reinforce the negative beliefs they have about themselves.

Think for a moment about a young women who has perhaps experienced abuse, statistically such a women is more likely to end up in relationships with other men who abuse her. It is easy to think that is illogical and at a simple level it is but her inner psyche tells her she is no good, not worthy of love or respect and subconsciously will seek relationship which confirm that. This I recognise giving a simple explanation for that is a very complex process. As we also all know addictions or compulsions don’t develop overnight but usually begin quite slowly and addiction will develop almost insidiously. Someone who takes a drug will get some reaction from it that they like, whether it is the 38

mellowness of a few drinks or the high of a stimulant it is a good feeling that leaves the individual wanting more and gradually a pattern begins until in the case of addiction the ‘need’ for that feeling or perhaps the way it stops or lessens certain other feelings will drive the individual to seek it more frequently and purposefully. But before we rush to be critical we all indulge in similar patterns of behaviour. There are probably not many people reading this who have not at some point had a few drinks at the end of a bad day. Or think about the person who is obsessive about cleanliness. There is obviously a level at which compulsion, like addiction, drives almost all other behaviours. So while there may be many people living fairly functional lives but who feel compelled to do certain things, mop the kitchen floor before work, clean assiduously before they go to bed,

jan2015.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 18/12/2014 17:53 Page 37

even though rationally a part of them knows this is not strictly necessary. There are of course others whose lives are truly blighted by the compulsion they have to repeat certain tasks, and gradually this can literally take over their lives. So why are people driven to such behaviours? I acknowledge the complexities that may exist but also the simplicity of the fact that as humans our behaviour usually gives us something we need. I am not talking here about a clean house but about the emotion that drives the behaviour (the cleaning in this case) and then the emotion that comes from having done it. People who I see for tapping therapy talk about satisfying a drive, but like an addiction when they wake the next day the cycle begins again. This pattern of behaviour can be the same with a whole range of emotions. It may cause some people to continually reject potential

partners, or conversely constantly seek new attractions to prove to themselves that either they are unlovable (and doing the rejecting is usually easier emotionally than being rejected) or that they could have love if they wanted it. Both almost opposite behaviours stem form a similar fear and demonstrate the different ways that people cope with uncomfortable beliefs about themselves. Many people tell me they feel compelled to eat, even when they decide they won’t they find themselves reaching for food as a comfort. In many ways this can be seen as another type of addiction. The perplexing thing is that often the belief that drives the behaviour is simply not true. Some-one may avoid social situations because they have a low self esteem, but actually while this is understandable they may actually be living out of fear because of a trauma 39

that happened years ago, or even something as small as a comment that ‘took root’ in their own emotional subconscious. But there is a way out. Whatever the underlying cause or driver if the emotion is identified and the cause dealt with there can be a way out. Tapping is one way of doing this in a simple, no- invasive, empowering way it deals with the emotional imbalance that traumas can cause and with the underlying beliefs. Dealing with the cause is surely a better way than simply managing the addiction or compulsion, although in fact tapping can actually help with the compulsive or addictive behaviour too and that is certainly a good starting point for anyone struggling with such behaviours. 07921193479 01234 349067 info@attunededucation.com www.attunededucation.com

Trio of chocolate mousses Ingredients

175g dark chocolate (70%) 115g butter 3 large eggs, separated For the Flavours 1 shot cointreau 50g strawberry jam 50g raspberry jam

Method

Melt the chocolate and butter in the microwave, for 1 minute 30 seconds, stirring every 30 seconds. The butter should stop the chocolate burning, but you still need to be careful. For the more cautious, melt these over a pan of simmering water, ensuring the water is not touching the bottom of the bowl. Whisk your egg whites with the sugar to form stiff peaks. Add the egg yolks to the chocolate, mixing constantly. Gently fold the whites into the chocolate mixture. Divide the mix into 3 and a flavour to each of them, carefully folding these in. The cointreau mousse will come out slightly looser, but will still set firm Transfer the mousse to espresso mugs or shot glasses and chill overnight. Garnish each with a piece of fruit according to each flavour.

Happy New Year to all Affinity magazine readers and may it be the best year you have ever had, either personally or business wise. I am sure you all enjoyed the Christmas period with your loved ones, friends and family and are ready for whatever 2015 has to throw at you! The football world is looking forward to another mad January as the transfer window opens on the 3rd January and closes on 2nd February. As usual, I would expect most of the business to be done in the last week and even the last day when there will be plenty of panic buys. All clubs will want to improve their squads for the second half of the campaign or look to balance the books. It is an exciting part of the game and this time of the year is notoriously exciting for nonleague clubs in the third round of the FA Cup and also the lower league clubs like AFC Wimbledon who face Liverpool in a repeat of that famous cup final of the 80s. Yeovil Town face Manchester United at Huish Park and Dover Athletic of the Conference face Crystal Palace of the Premier League which is also a local derby, so there will be a full house. We have had plenty of upsets in all competitions and I am sure the FA Cup will provide even more magic, something that I believe is good for the game. It excites the supporters and it keeps the dream of FA Cup glory at the forefront of people’s minds. I am sure everyone will be watching these games with interest. Enjoy the start of 2015! Up the Posh!

TOWIE Star Ricky Rayment Launches his 2015 Calendar

Ricky Rayment stars in the popular ITV series ‘The Only Way Is Essex.’ His good looks and cheeky personality have quickly led him to be a fan favourite. For 2015 Ricky has brought out his own calendar, we decided to catch up with him over the Christmas period to get his thoughts on all things festive. What inspired you to do a calendar? How could I turn down the opportunity to have my own calendar? 3 years ago I worked for my dad. Now I'm going to be on people's walls! It's crazy!

How did you prepare for the shoot? I've been doing a lot of property developing and working on site so that helped me to stay in shape. Which is your favourite photograph and month? I like December. Because it's Christmassy and I love that time of year!

Who would be your ideal mistletoe match? Hmm… I would like Adriana Lima to pop by but if she's not available Liv Tyler or Kate Beckinsale would be just as good. I'm not fussy! What’s the worst Christmas cracker joke you’ve ever heard? I'm going to be really honest. I'm useless with jokes as I don't remember any!

What kind of traditions do you have to celebrate Christmas? I always put the decorations up 12 days before Christmas and take them down no later than 12 days after. It’s bad luck apparently- my mum drilled it into me as a kid!

54

If you could have anyone at your table this Christmas, who would they be? It would be nice to have my Grandad back for Christmas. I'm pretty sure it would make my Nan really happy too. Bless her heart.

Which year was your favourite Christmas and why? I can't really put a year on it, but all the Christmas' when I was a young kid when I couldn't sleep the night before because I was so excited ha. I still love Christmas, but now I'm older you don't get the same buzz as when you was a kid. Which is your favourite Christmas song or carol? I like the 'It's chrriiissssttttmmaaaaaaasss' tune whatever it's called ha!

What does 2015 look like for you? It's actually looking to be probably my most successful year yet! I have so many plans and loads of business ventures coming together so it's a really, really exciting time for me! Ricky’s calendar is out now and available from Celebrity Merchandise: www.celebritymerchandise.co.uk/Docume nt/Edit/ricky-rayment-2015-calendar

Flying Through The Air

T

hose of you that know me will be aware that I am not a thrill seeking adrenaline junkie, I like to keep my feet firmly on the ground so when I had the chance to be taken 1000’s of feet in the air in a helicopter and fly over London taking in all of the Capitals major Landmarks I knew it was too good a chance to miss and I could tick it off my bucket list (although I didn’t know it had been on it!) but I am a baby and I experienced a range of emotions from being petrified (I don’t like heights) to as excited as a child on Christmas day!

almost!), we had a short safety briefing where we were taught what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency, and then it was life vests on and we were heading out to the awaiting helicopter!

When we got to the tube station and our tube wasn’t running I saw this as a sign that I shouldn’t do it, but after being lectured by my ever-patient husband we hopped in a taxi and headed to The London Helicopter helipad in Battersea.

Once in the air I completely forgot about my fears – it was simply amazing, viewing London from 1500 feet in the air an unbelievable experience that leaves you breathless, you get to see some of London’s most popular landmarks/places including Hyde Park, Marble Arch, The London Eye, Oval Cricket Ground, Trafalgar Square, and of course Buckingham Palace from a unique vantage point –

As soon as we arrived at our destination we were greeted warmly and my questions were all answered putting my mind at rest (well

How lucky was I, I got front row seats right next to the pilot who I have to say was lovely and put my mind even at more ease, headphones were worn by everyone on the flight making it easy to communicate with each other – then with the helicopters blades whirring we started to climb into the sky.

58

if you thought the view from the Shard was fabulous – well you will be blown away with the views from a helicopter ride. Seeing London from the sky was a fantastic experience, thrilling and exciting our pilot was knowledgeable and made flying a helicopter look as easy as riding a bike!! There’s no denying that London is one of the most stunning cities when viewed from the ground so words fail me to describe what it’s like viewing it from the air – an experience I believe everyone needs to experience at least once. Flights start from £150 (Twelve minutes in the air), £200 (Twenty minutes in the air and £1,500 (You have exclusive use of the helicopter and can invite along 5 friends to share the experience with you!) A Room with a View

A

Lancaster London

trip to London for the weekend found us staying at The luxurious 4 star Lancaster London Hotel, an ideal location in central London, close to the bustling shopping districts of Oxford and Bond Street, internationally famed West End theatres, museums and tourist attractions and with Hyde Park just on its doorstep it holds an envious position.

Like all the staff within the hotel, the staff at Nipa were no exception and were friendly and helpful. After much thought and studying of the menu we decided on the Ruam Mitr (a selection of Thai starters to share), these included spring rolls, Thai fishcakes, chicken and beef satay, deep fried prawn dumplings and steamed dumplings with rice wrappers, accompanied with a variety of dipping sauces, it was simply delicious. The mains were just as flavorsome and authentic and included chicken and mushrooms with cashew nuts in a light soy and oyster sauce, Golden fried chicken wrapped in Pandan leaves and served with a dark soy sauce, Flat noodles stir-fried with light soy and oyster sauce, chicken, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, basil and chilies.

Rooms on the higher levels offer guests’ unfettered views across London’s open space and skyline, it is simply stunning. We were lucky enough to stay in a Luxury Royal Suite on the 14th floor with breath-taking views of Hyde Park’s exquisite Italian Gardens; this suite really was fit for a King! With a striking dining area adjacent to a sumptuous lounge, a separate bedroom and bathroom were the icing on the cake.

With intense flavours using only the freshest ingredients, Head Chef, Mrs Nongyao Thoopchoi’s cooking reflects a rich mix of the traditional dishes of Thailand’s central region whilst blending in a variety of regional specialties making dining here a truly divine experience.

First impressions are absolutely everything and The Lancaster gets this just right. The reception area is vast, but still manages to feel welcoming and cozy with a fire burning away to welcome guests on a cold winter’s day. The other big plus for The Lancaster is it’s own car park, how convenient is that right in the centre of London!

Retiring to our suite after dinner allowed us to look out of our window at London all lit up, a sight to certainly behold, it’s worth staying here just for the view!

After spending the afternoon shopping (when in London it has to be done!), we headed back to the hotel to relax in the lounge bar for a couple of cocktails before having dinner in the hotel’s award winning Thai restaurant ‘Nipa Thai’ an oriental gem in the heart of the capital, combining outstanding traditional cuisine and subtle authentic décor with a warm, welcoming ambience – bringing the soul of Thailand to London. The restaurant showcases original Thai artifacts within a beautifully paneled teak interior.

A restful nights sleep saw us wake up ready to start the day – The Lancaster, London certainly puts you at the very centre of this vibrant city making it an ideal place to stay for any visit to London and really one night is not enough – I’ll just have to visit again and stay for longer next time! Prices start from £159 per person per night
