First Date Fabulous 14

jan2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 28/12/2015 11:18 Page 13

Make up? Tick! Outfit? Ready! Hair? Sorted! First dates can be nerve wracking and they take a long time to prepare for. However, it’s not only our look that can boost confidence. We asked our Nutritionist to tell us what are the best foods we should eat before a date to feel fabulous?

De Stress - Nuts We all get the first date jitters. One of the key things to realise is that stress and anxiety can be fuelled by eating the wrong types of food. Stick to snacks that don’t raise your blood sugar too quickly, such as nuts, including almonds, brazil nuts, hazelnuts and macadamia nuts, as these contain some protein and good fats that will reduce your cravings. They are also a good source of magnesium, which helps with efficient energy production while also being calming to the nervous system.

Line Your Stomach - Salmon & Olives If you are seeing him for cocktails make sure your belly is ready for alcoholic drinks. Overall, it’s important that you do eat before drinking to slow the absorption of alcohol and additionally reduce the irritation that it causes to the stomach. Include healthy fats such as salmon or olive oil dressing to slow absorption of alcohol, thereby slowing the work for your liver. Don’t have time for a meal? Snack on olives before you go out. Keep Your Breath Fresh - Crunchy Fruit & Vegetables Carrots, apples and celery can help scrape out the plague build-ups that can cause bad breath. Apart from being nutritious and healthy, these crunchy foods can also boost production of saliva, which fights bacteria. In addition, celery is a natural diuretic so it will help to fight water retention and bloating. Don’t forget to drink! (only water at this point though). Dehydration is one of the most common reasons of bad breath. If you are one of those people who survive on coffee and forget about topping up their water, bottle you are most likely

to develop bad breath during the day. Our saliva is a natural antiseptic and it plays a crucial role in breaking down food particles trapped within dental crevices, protecting teeth from bacterial decay. However, in order for your body to produce enough of it, you must be drinking plenty of water throughout the day, otherwise microbes in our mouth will feed on food pieces and release byproducts, causing odour at the same time. Keep your Belly Flat - Legumes & Kimchi You want to look your best in your LBD. Bloated belly is not an option! Try to include legumes in your diet before the big day. ‘They consist of amylose, which is a resistant starch - so called because it is resistant to stomach acid and digestive enzymes and it reaches the large intestine essentially intact. So it manages to escape digestion and absorption in the small intenstine. It almost behaves like fibre, providing bulk for the bowel motion and fuel for the beneficial bacteria. This good quality protein slows down the rate that the stomach processes food and delays the passage of the carbohydrates with it. As soon as you add a protein (be it animal or vegetable) to a carbohydrate, you change it into a slower releasing carbohydrate, that keep your sugar levels at bay.

To balance your gut flora and keep your belly flat and happy consider a good quality live bacteria supplement, such as ProVen’s Adult 25 Billion (provenprobiotics.co.uk, £13.95) and include fermented foods in your daily diet. Go for natural yoghurt, miso soup, sauerkraut, kimchi and kambucha. Get in the Mood - Chocolate & Oysters Not in a mood for a date? Too late to cancel? Have a couple of squares of dark chocolate. Chocolate contains several substances that may improve mood. These include phenylethylamine, which can act as a brain neurotransmitter and affect your mood and pleasure. Chocolate also contains magnesium, one of the nutrients needed for production of serotonin, the primary hormone responsible for good mood. Eating any food that you enjoy also stimulates endorphin release, which makes you feel good. Certain nutrients and herbs can be extremely helpful if your sex drives needs a boost. Zinc is essential for hormone balance and sex drive, hence the old wives’ tale of using oysters (which contain high amounts of zinc) as an aphrodisiac. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be planning your second date before the evening’s even over.

Midlife Madness What? Another Shower!!! It strikes horror into the heart of my children but I have to acknowledge, with some cringing, that when I was little it was not an option to shower every day. In fact if I am honest we didn’t get a shower till I was a teenager, prior to that it was a good old bath and usually people had one just once or twice a week, (Thursday and Sunday nights for me) unless you worked down the mine in which case you would visit the pit baths. My children think this is thoroughly shocking but I certainly don’t remember people being smelly, though maybe like the poor of Victorian times I just got used to it.

see one shower a day as an absolute minimum, a kind of desperate measure when it can’t be avoided but increasingly they are taking two or even three a day! Obviously there are the standard night and morning ones, but there may be a trip to the gym, or a night out which requires another shower, even if their job requires no physical exertion of any kind or ‘dirt’. But what really staggers me is the holiday showering! Given that on a beach holiday much time is spent in water anyway! But I remain nonplussed as to why you would have a shower in the morning before you go to the beach – surely you know you are going to get covered with sand and probably you’ll swim in salty water not to mention spilling rapidly melting choc ice all down your ‘bare’ fronts. So I can completely understand the need for a nice cleansing shower AFTER a day on the beach. I can’t understand why you would need one before you set off on the whole messy experience.

I can also remember my mum telling me that she had a once a week bath in a tin bath in the lounge that was filled using kettles and pans heated on the oven/fire and the worst bit for her was that being the youngest and a girl her three brothers got to go in first!! My dad, of course, could go one better by not only telling me about the outside toilet he remembered when growing up but the fact that in one house there was a shared ‘netty’ outside – two doors led into it, one from each garden with no dividing wall once you were in there - can’t get my head round that one!!

I think about all that water – literally going down the drain and I know a shower uses a lot less that than a bath, but I think if it is upwards of three a day it can’t be that much less. Of course, I do realise that it has probably all been a subtle brainwashing plan initiated by the cosmetics trade – just think how much shower gel they must sell!! But I can also acknowledge that it isn’t going to change any time soon so I find myself wondering where we are heading – we will eventually move to a time when every bedroom has an en suite and people shower four times a day – where will it end!!

So I can acknowledge the personal hygiene climate is changing and most people see it as essential to shower each day and, in fact we are rapidly moving to a point where many people wouldn’t contemplate booking a room in a hotel without an en suite or indeed buying a house without an en suite, at least for the master bedroom but increasingly for every other bedroom in the house! The thing is - where is it going to stop? Our grown up kids

18

Anyway I will have to think about that another time because right now I am going to luxuriate in a long deep bath, but it is my first (and only) one of the day.

Encouraging a Love of Books At Pilgrims, we place huge store on the skill of reading because it is so incredibly important to a child’s development - it introduces them to new words and ideas; it stretches their imaginations and helps them to comprehend and accept new concepts and information. If you have seen our school library, you will know that we place a great emphasis on books – they are always accessible to children and feature highly in every day classroom life. We love books and we’d love your children to feel the same way.

How to encourage an ongoing love of reading Most parents instinctively start reading to their children when they are just babies; giving them a great introduction to language and communication. As children grow older, there are a number of things you can do as a parent to encourage an ongoing love of reading, such as: 1. Set a good example - At Pilgrims we look to build on the foundations laid down by parents at home. If your child sees you reading, whether it’s a recipe book, magazine or newspaper, you are setting a great example. Children love to copy their parents and by doing so they gain confidence – learning from their most influential role models.

2. Make the time – try to find at least 10 minutes every day to read with your child – bedtime is a great time to share a book together. In addition to the benefits to their academic and social development, reading together helps strengthen your relationship with your child. Just don’t spend too long reading – be led by your child - a good ten minutes is better than a difficult half hour. 3.

Ask lots of questions – check your child’s 22

understanding of what they are reading by asking them questions about the story – ask them what they see, what they think could happen next, what they like about the story, who their favourite character is and encourage them to use the pictures to explain what’s happening. 4. Praise their efforts and be positive - it’s OK to make mistakes but be certain to correct them in a mindful and gentle way – remember that reading should be fun!

5. Let them make some noise – encourage your children to read aloud – to you, friends, pets or even their toys – hearing their own voice helps them practise their speaking; building communication skills and confidence.

6. Point out words all around you – life provides endless opportunities for reading from cereal packets, billboards and advertisements on buses. Encourage your children to read what’s around them.

7. Make books accessible – have a bookshelf where your child can keep their books and show them how to turn pages carefully – by showing them how to care for books, it helps to instil a sense of responsibility for their own belongings. 8. Support your local library – they are such a fabulous resource but they need our support in order to exist. Make a visit to the library a fun activity and spend some quality time there with your children.

For more inspiration please visit our website news page to view the suggestions some of our teachers have for books they loved reading when they were little: www.pilgrims-school.info/news/ and happy reading!

Love Life’s Seasons Learning to

We will all have heard the song, based on a proverb, about there being a time or ‘season for everything under heaven’. Gardeners and farmers know it, but many of us may have lost some of the sense of this because our lives tend to be less weather dependent. Many of us will travel by car or we work indoors making it possible for many people to escape the weather as we go from house to car to office, and although we might turn the heating up, and scrape ice off the car - we are in some ways insulated from the seasons, protected from them a bit. Which is why when there are extreme weather events it causes understandable distress for those directly involved and considerable shock for others. WE have also become insulated from seasons when it comes to food. Almost everything is available all year

round, in fact I’m not quite sure what we mean by seasonal produce these days, yet I can remember vividly as a child only ever eating strawberries and fresh tomatoes in the summer, the taste made sweeter because they would only be available for a few weeks and then not again until the next summer. Don’t get me wrong in lots of ways I enjoy being able to have strawberries whenever I feel like it, but life involves seasons. We may in our modern way of life be more distant from the seasons than we were but life itself is cyclical and ‘seasons’ are part of that cyclical nature.

26

Live in each season as it passes, breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit and resign yourself to the influence of the earth. Henry David Thoreau

jan2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 28/12/2015 11:19 Page 25

Don’t waste the season of life you are in now because you want the next one to come. Unknown

Our Response Although we can’t control life’s seasons, just like we can’t control the weather, one thing we can always control is how we respond to the situation we find ourselves in. If it’s a freezing cold day but we insist on wearing thin clothes like we would in summer – it will feel much worse. If we wrap up warmly it won’t be so bad. In life that means perhaps, accepting help and support from others when times are tough, maybe taking a step back if we are coping with a very difficult season, like loss or illness perhaps. But it is also about adjusting our attitude. The problems that we are experiencing may be consequences of earlier actions but they may just be part of life’s seasons. As parents age, for example, that may cause us both emotional stress and bring practical caring challenges. People who have young children may experience frustration at having no time for themselves, their relationships or even sleep, as well as experiencing much joy of course! We cannot change the circumstances, the seasons, or the wind, but we can change ourselves. Jim Rohn

Adapt and Learn The technique to surviving the seasons is to enjoy the fruits of that particular season, focus on the good things. It’s a bit like enjoying the strawberries in summer rather than worrying about the flies or mosquitos. But also approaching the season with acceptance, if its winter it will be cold so wrap up. In life if it is a time that is testing make sure you allow yourself to be supported, make time to look after yourself and don’t get into the destructive habit of beating yourself up – sometimes things just happen, they may be no-ones fault, they are just the way life is. Rest assured that in every season you experience there will be an opportunity to learn and develop through the season you find yourself in, so that eventually you can create your own ‘season’ from within whatever you face In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.

Accepting that life has seasons is the first important step. Things in life change and sometimes these are beyond our control. If we can see such times as simply ‘seasons’ it is much easier to sort of soldier through. Each phase in life bring its challenges and its joys – but each season is different and sometimes we can devote such a lot of effort wanting to rush on to the next one that we actually don’t fully experience the season we are in – I bet all of us, as children or teenagers, wished at some point that we were grown up, and every grown up has had at least the odd moment when we have longed once again for days of carefree childhood. It is simply not good to be wishing for a season other than the one we are in, what we need to do is develop a positive attitude, so we can fully embrace where we are in life and either enjoy it or, if it is one of those difficult times, at least learn what we can from it.

Treatment of the Month

Katherine Daniels Firming Resculpting Body Treatment I have found the most amazing treatment launching this month at Y Spa from Katherine Daniels Cosmetics, a must for all us ladies (and gents) who make the resolution “New Year. New You!”

shower everything is done lying down), a cream is then vigorously massaged into the key areas to stimulate the body before a gel and mask are applied, these are left for approx 20 minutes, with it starting off warm and cooling down as the minutes tick by, the natural cooling down stimulates the fatty cells.

Katherine Daniels Cosmetics is a Beautifully British concept that takes full advantage of the latest techniques of combining highly technical ingredients to give you the very best anti-ageing results, offering you undeniable effectiveness from the very first application.

The mask is peeled off and any excess is wiped off with warm water and a cloth, again no getting up from the bed - I already felt smoother and firmer, or was it my imagination?

Have you got a party coming up, a wedding to attend or even a first date and you need to fit in that LBD, but you’ve left it too late and it’s today! Then look no further; this is the treatment for you ‘The Firming Resculpting Body Treatment’

The moment of truth arrives, measurements are retaken and the grand total of inches lost is announced – Wow I’d lost 9 inches – Wow indeed! This is definitely a treatment that lives up to its claim, there is an aftercare cream you can buy to continue using at home – I did and a week later I have to say the results are still amazing.

This treatment claims to give immediate inch loss and a smoother, more refined silhouette, with results being visible after one treatment! Does it work? I visited Y Spa to find out.

This is one treatment I can’t rave about enough, it really does do what it says – and I for one will definitely be booking in again soon!

A consultation with your therapist begins with discussing the areas you want to lose the inches from; once this has been established measurements are taken and recorded for later reference. Lying on the treatment bed, the areas being targeted are exfoliated with a gentle oil and salt exfoliator, before being removed with hot towels (unlike a lot of these type of body treatments where you have to move off the couch to 28

Not a Dry Eye in the Room

N

ow that the cold winter weather is well and truly here, we often think of wrapping up warm and taking precautions to protect our skin, but many of us underestimate the importance of protecting our eye health. Late nights, colder weather and cosy nights in with the central heating on can all take their toll on our eye health, with ‘Dry Eye’ being one of the resulting symptoms. Research by eye health experts Scope Ophthalmics, reveals that 3 in 5 people are suffering from multiple symptoms of dry eyes including eye fatigue, excessive watering, a feeling of grittiness or blurred vision, and a further 1 in 3 claim that having dry eyes impacts the amount of time they spend doing the things they enjoy, such as spending time outdoors, reading a book and watching a film. “Winter is the worst time of year for dry eyes,” explains Julian Stevens, an eye specialist based at Moorfields Eye Hospital. “Eyes can feel “gritty” and dry, but they can also become watery as dry spots occur on the front of the eye. Have you ever wondered why our eyes start to stream after a cold winter’s walk? This is because the wind can be so drying that our eyes produce watery tears which just run off our eyes. Identifying the issue is a key step to healthier and more comfortable eyes.” 10 Top Tips for Protecting Your Eye Health This Winter

1. Get enough H20! Indulging in one too many alcoholic drinks dehydrates us and slows our blink rate so we end up with dry eyes. The other thing that happens when we have a little too much alcohol is that we often sleep with our eyes slightly open causing a dry crescent to form along the bottom of the eye. Drinking a glass of water for every alcoholic drink can help stave off the dehydrating effects and help to

reduce puffy and red eyes the morning after!

2. Boost your intake of antioxidants – Late nights, poor diet and lack of exercise can cause oxidative stress on the body which has been linked to dry eye. Incorporating a rainbow of fresh fruit and vegetables in to your diet, as well as dark leafy greens like kale, spinach and chard may actually help slow down the process of oxidation and have been shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration.

3. Enjoy more salmon and oily fish Omega-3s, the fatty acids found in oily fish such as sardines, salmon and tuna steak will give your overall eye health a great boost and have been shown to relieve dry eye symptoms. Try a high quality supplement like Omega Eye which is rich in omega-3 fats EPA and DHA – just 4 capsules a day provides the same amount of omega 3’s as 9 tins of tuna! (RRP £82.50 for 3 months available from www.ScopeOmegaHealth.co.uk) 4. Have a digital detox – Bad habits when using computers are some of the most common reasons for irritable, dry eyes. It’s caused by concentration and not blinking as often as we should so it’s important to “think and blink” and to take regular screen breaks to give your eyes a much-needed break.

5. Be savvy with make-up – we all want to look our best, but did you know that make-up can be a trigger for dry eye? Try to use hypoallergenic and ophthalmologisttested products and instead of eye shadow powder, try a cream eye shadow instead. For those who truly suffer, keep your eye area clear as often as possible and only apply eye makeup on special occasions. 6. Swap to Green tea - This antioxidant-rich tea has an acquired taste, so if you’re not a fan, try

starting with one that has a lighter flavour and working your way up to the strong organic variety. Research has shown that the anti oxidants in tea are absorbed by different parts of the eye and can have a protective effect.

7. Relax with an eye massage - A simple eyelid massage will stimulate the tear glands and help push the oil in your tears around the eye. Placing a warm washcloth over closed eyes and gently massageing the upper eyelid against the brow bone for 5 to 10 seconds is not only soothing for eyes but relaxing too. 8. Don’t forget your sunglasses! We all know about the dangers of UV for the skin, but it can also have a drying effect on our eyes. Even on a bright winter’s day it’s a good tip to make sure you wear sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes as the damage is often underestimated.

9. Drops drops drops! Finding an eye drop that is preservative free, such as new Hycosan Fresh™ for mild dry eye (£8.95 available from Boots) is important, as preservatives can cause further aggravation to eyes that are already feeling sore. Hycosan Fresh™ contains all natural ingredients including Euphrasia (Eyebright), a plant based extract that has been shown to reduce irritation associated with dry eyes and Sodium Hyaluronate which is known for its hydrating properties, ensuring eyes stay lubricated for longer.

10. All eyes on potassium – Potassium and other mineral levels can be lower in people who have dry eye symptoms, so it’s important to boost your intake. The best food sources of potassium include almonds, pecans, bananas, raisins, dates, figs and avocados. Adding them to salads or snacking on them throughout the day is a healthy way to boost your intake!

d’Pary’s A date at

Wooden floors, a bar made from an old stable block, exposed brick and original tiles, you could be mistaken for thinking you were visiting a bar from the Victorian era - but no, we were at d’Pary’s, an informal cosy restaurant located in the heart of Bedford where the special’s menu is chalked up on an old style school blackboard – if the food is as good as all the quirky extras we were in for a real treat! Having been greeted by warm friendly staff, we were shown to our table, where we mulled over the menu. There was so much to tempt us it took a few minutes to make our choices. 42

Once the dishes were ordered we sat back, relaxed, took in the atmosphere and teased our tastebuds with some olives and warm bread. Starters consisted of Arancini Duo (3 tomato & mozzarella and 3 spinach & goats cheese mini arancini, served with whipped goats cheese and olive tapenade), the combination of colour, texture and taste blended together effortlessly to create an absolute delight. Duck Dumplings (pak choi, bean sprouts, spring onion, peanuts and plum sauce) was Mr Z’s choice, the duck was tender and tasted utterly divine, with an added sweetness from the peanut and plumb sauce. The presentation of both dishes was just perfect. Main courses followed in the form of Honey Roasted Duck Breast served on a butternut and carrot mash, kale and celeriac puree. Again I couldn’t fault the presentation - the duck was tender and cooked exactly as requested, with the mash and kale adding softness to the palate. The other choice roasted lamb rump, with a rosemary jus, dauphinoise potatoes, savoy cabbage and leeks was taken from the specials board – the lamb was succulent and the amalgamation of flavours was delightful. I was far too full for dessert until I saw a twist on one of my favourites – Eton Mess cheesecake, which was just delicious – I am sure there were no calories in it either!! Panacotta bread and butter pudding with custard was another choice off the specials board – and proved the perfect pudding for a cold winter’s evening. Dishes at d’Parys are creative and appeal to all tastes, the atmosphere is relaxed and staff are warm and friendly – so if you’re wondering where to enjoy a get together with family or friends then look no further, this is the ideal place for you. d’Pary’s 45 De Parys Avenue Bedford, MK40 2UAT 01234 340248 www.dparys.co.uk

Style and Elegance at The Crowne Plaza, Gerrads Cross

jan2016.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 29/12/2015 12:58 Page 63

Did your New Year’s resolution list include more time to yourself? Mine did, which is why I found myself in The Club Room at the recently refurbished Crowne Plaza Hotel at Gerrads Cross, glass of bubbles in one hand and flicking through a luxury magazine with the other. Situated in the heart of Buckinghamshire at the base of the Chiltern Hills and just 17 minutes from the centre of London, the Crowne Plaza has undergone an extensive £20m refurbishment, creating a sleek and stylish place to escape to. Arriving at the hotel you could be mistaken for thinking you were about to star in an episode of Dallas, the imposing white building being reminiscent of an American colonial home - but that’s where the similarities end, the reception area is elegant and modern, graceful chandeliers hang from the ceilings, modern sofas scatter the lobby area, all creating a voguish space for you to enjoy. Rooms are spacious and carry the same elegant furnishings as the rest of the hotel, with dark wood complementing the soft white linens. All rooms have air conditioning, free WiFi, a flat screen TV, complimentary mini bar and in room tea and coffee. There was hardly time to throw my clothes out of my suitcase before heading downstairs to the hotel’s Spa and Wellness Centre – WAVE, a relaxing and rejuvenating retreat with a 15m pool, sauna, steam room and a Rasul Mud Therapy room. An ESPA back, face and scalp massage was what awaited me, this deluxe treatment was 85 minutes of pure indulgence, that left me feeling so pampered and refreshed I floated on air back to my room. All that pampering had left me feeling in need of a little refueling, so we paid a visit to the Club Lounge (drinks and refreshments are

complimentary in here, if you are staying in a Club bedroom), your keycard allows you access, it’s like having your very own lounge in the hotel – pre-dinner drinks and nibbles finished we made our way to the 1269 Restaurant, Bar and Grill, specialising in livestock, game and butcherstyle preparation, with an incredible charcoal josper oven at its heart. Named after the year the neighbouring town of Beaconsfield received its charter for trading livestock, 1269 is led by head chef, Dean Crews, who joined the hotel from the Charing Cross Hotel in London. Tempting our tastebuds with roast chorizo, beet hummus and honey bread was a real treat while perusing the main course menu. All the meat is aged in-house and, signature dishes include Buccleuch Estate Beef, aged for 28 days in 1269’s in-house ageing room, as well as their speciality cured smoked salmon. The menu certainly offers a comprehensive selection of dishes influenced by the local area, with food to suit everyone’s tastes, a real treat. A nightcap in the form of a cocktail followed taken in the contemporary bar, with its very own Whisky Vault, where regulars can keep bottles of whisky they have bought, and a drinks menu with over 69 whiskies, focused on bourbon which the owners say will “rival any London bar”. Retiring for the night it’s easy to see why this elegant hotel has you switching off from the real world and enjoying the peace and tranquility – hard to imagine you are only minutes away from London! A Celebration of Design and Luxury from Rolls-Royce Last month the official Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club (RREC) hosted a luxury showcase at London’s famous Saatchi Gallery where they launched a new publication, Strive for Perfection – A Celebration of Design & Luxury.

The gallery was full of car enthusiasts, owners, collectors and members of the RREC, and was hosted by motoring journalist and TV presenter Quentin Wilson, racing driver and TV presenter Vicky Butler-Henderson, and the famous wine critic Jilly Goolden. Discussing the content of the new book that inspired this special event, Jaclyn Smith, general manager at RREC, told us “Our publishing partner, St. James’s House, enlisted the help of a number of leading experts and motoring journalists that share our love of Rolls-Royce to help create a fitting homage to what is one of the world’s most prestigious names in luxury motoring. Exploring the full origins and heritage of Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the 444 beautifully designed pages of Strive for Perfection – A Celebration of Design & Luxury perfectly capture the full glamour and prowess of this motoring icon.” A showcase of Rolls-Royce and Bentley exhibits were on display throughout the evening to celebrate the illustrious history of this luxury auto manufacturer. These included brand new RollsRoyce and Bentley engines, a Ghost engine, a Clout III chassis, a 20hp cutaway, and a specially commissioned Goodwood Mini, designed by Rolls-Royce. Quentin Wilson’s very own Bentley GCT was just one of the collection of iconic Rolls-Royce and Bentley models on display. And we were lucky enough to lay our eyes on the soon-to-bereleased Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, a new soft top convertible, of course, we placed our order on the night!!! Curated to resonate with the theme of high-life, and to support the launch of the new book over 100 of the most revered luxury brands in the world were also exhibiting, with further extravagance being offered to guests as they were taken on a culinary journey of specially selected food and wines whilst exploring the exhibition. Richard Freed, director at St. James’s House, told us: “What better way to launch this wonderful book than by a celebration of the finer things in life and an ensemble of luxury? We are all very excited about what promises to be an evening to remember.” And it most certainly was! 68

Spring into Theatre

Kicking off the spring season – or rather leaping, gloriously into it, romance was never quite so Gothic or evocative as Matthew Bourne’s dazzling production of Sleeping Beauty. Boogie beauties return to MKT, ready to give you the ride of your life, as Jason Donovan and the cast of Priscilla Queen of the Desert hop aboard the party bus again, back by overwhelming popular demand.

There’s more smash hit musical entertainment later in the season when the razzledazzle, double–trouble cell block chicks of Chicago hit town while you can really let your hair down as the feelgood factor gets a mighty boost with the award-winning musical, Hairspray. A quiet night in... Early One Morning by Virginia Baily

A grey dawn in 1943: on a street in Rome, two young women, complete strangers to each other, lock eyes for a single moment. One of the women, Chiara Ravello, is about to flee the occupied city for the safety of her grandparents' house in the hills. The other has been herded on to a truck with her husband and their young children, and will shortly be driven off into the darkness. In that endless-seeming moment, before she has time to think about what she is doing, Chiara makes a decision that changes her life for ever. Loudly claiming the woman's son as her own nephew, she demands his immediate return; only as the trucks depart does she begin to realise what she has done. She is twenty-seven, single, with a sister who needs her constant care, a hazardous journey ahead of her, and now a child in her charge - a child with no papers who refuses to speak and gives every indication that he will bolt at the first opportunity. Three decades later, Chiara lives alone in Rome, a self-contained, self-possessed woman working as a translator and to all appearances quite content with a life which revolves around work, friends, music and the theatre. But always in the background is the shadow of Daniele, the boy from the truck, whose absence haunts her every moment. Gradually we learn of the havoc wrought on Chiara, her family and her friends by the boy she rescued, and how he eventually broke her heart. And when she receives a phone call from a teenage girl named Maria, claiming to be Daniele's daughter.

The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy star in an enthralling revenge western. Fur trapper Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is leading a hunting party in 1820s South Dakota when he's attacked and viciously mauled by a bear. Rather than tending to his wounds, the frontiersman's traitorous companions, led by John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy), decide to abandon him. They kill his half-Native American son and leave Glass to perish in a shallow grave. But he survives. Now he must brave warring tribes, a savage environment and a ferociously harsh winter on a 120-mile trek to take his revenge. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's raw and gritty follow-up to the Oscar-winning Birdman is based on an extraordinary true story of betrayal, survival and ultimate redemption. Release Date: 15th January
