3 When it comes to the New Year, many of us use this as a time to set goals for ourselves for the next 12 months that lie ahead. Whether it’s losing an unrealistic amount of weight or starting a new niche hobby, our New Year’s resolutions are often extreme and set us up for a fall leaving us feeling demoralized and distraught by the time spring rolls into town. However, it doesn’t have to be this way, it’s all about your mindset, page 20 tells you how to make and stick to your goals.

Forget ‘Self-Help’ in 2019 7 Skills for your Best Year Ever

jan2019.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/12/2018 21:44 Page 9

2019

really will be your best year ever! We often start a new year with intentions or resolutions but these are largely a waste of time. That’s because these are very short-term solutions as far as our brains are concerned. We love them because we love a quick fix. But come mid January and the majority of us have been unable to even keep one or two of the resolutions we made. January is a good month for self-help books! Many self-help books and articles advocate a mix of tools and affirmations that have worked for the writer and promote “transformational change”. It can be easy to get lost in all these pieces of advice, suggestions, routines and “hacks” which can be quite challenging to follow through for any length of time. The only route and the fastest route to creating your best year is through developing your self-awareness. Do this by strengthening 7 specific skills that you already have. When you build more self-awareness into your muscle memory you experience quick wins (which our brain will quickly translate into quick fixes) and real long-term change and results.

Think of a professional footballer – they will have spent millions of hours manipulating the ball with different parts of their foot so that when they are in a high stake situation – like a match, they are able to look up, be present with whatever is going on and make that winning kick. That’s muscle memory. And so it is with behaviour and skills only far more interesting and fun! These are the only 7 skills you need and this is how you can use them to create your best year ever:

1. Adaptability – this skill will help you respond with grace and ease to change and setbacks. Rather than avoiding them you can learn to embrace them and experience growth and unexpected advantages as a result. The best way to build adaptability is through widening your comfort zone. That means looking each day for a way to get yourself into “stretch” – that’s where you experience ‘slight’ anxiety but where the biggest growth is. Say “yes” to new challenges and things you might by default say ‘no’ to. Try new things every day – whether that’s a new food, a new recipe or a new invitation – go from small to big and your comfort zone grows. 2. Critical thinking – your brain is amazing and can do so much more for us than we allow it to but we constantly drain it of energy. We are bombarded with a constant stream of information. Start this new year by creating space

in your day for reflection, contemplation, for thinking. Go for daily walks without your phone to not only do yourself good but also give your brain a chance to flourish. Routinise your day, especially the first part of it by deciding in advance what you will wear, eat for breakfast and plan your schedule the night before. This frees up your brain to do what it’s actually designed to do – be creative, resourceful and innovative!

3. Empathy – the most incredible gift you can give to others is the gift of your attention. This gift will immediately supercharge your personal and professional relationships. You cannot give this gift if you do not know how to be present. Start simple mindfulness exercises through slowing down your breath and being completely still for just 5 minutes a day. You can do this on your commute or whilst you are drinking a cup of tea. As long as you are not scrolling mindlessly at the same time! Being mindful every day for small pockets of time develops your ability to be present and truly listen the very next time you have a conversation.

4. Integrity – If you know your values and what is important to you, decisions are the easiest thing in the world to make. The New Year is a great time to think about what you value most and to what extent that is reflected in your everyday living and action and then build small, consistent ways to ensure that it is. Guaranteed happiness right there.

5. Being proactive – Whatever you are facing in 2019 or whatever you might be worried about stop right now and make a list of everything about that situation that is within your control and everything about it that is not. When we are stressed we tend to place our energy into things we have no control over. But the minute you put that energy into what you do have control over: your thoughts and behaviours you feel better immediately plus you usually influence the situation for the better! 6. Optimism – Optimism really is something you can bring into your everyday. Do this by creating positive experiences – these can be very small things – from enjoying a cup of tea with a friend to making time for looking after yourself more. And remember to be grateful – quickest route to happiness that exists! 7. Resilience – we need to be much more resilient so we are not constantly battered from whatever life throws at us. Build grit by sticking with something – we tend to give up very easily after even just one “rejection” yet perseverance has a super strong link to being resilient. Get these skills into your muscle memory by small easy steps and I know that 2019 will be your best year ever! Emma-Sue Prince is an inspirational soft skills and effective behaviours expert and author of 7 Skills for the Future, (Pearson) out 22nd January, and available on Amazon priced £12.99.

When Self-Acceptance isn’t Enough There has been a lot of talk in the media about the importance of accepting ourselves. Self-acceptance is an important place to reach, but I don’t think we should stop at self-acceptance, I think we should aim at self-love which at times, can be in conflict with self-acceptance.

If we live our lives trying to change either the physical or emotional features we would identify as core to our being then we can feel like we are living a lie and at the very least it will be massively exhausting. But first let’s be clear about what we should count as a ‘core’ feature.

Physical Features We are all individuals and all unique, so we all have different hair colours and types, different skin tone, eye colour, leg to trunk proportions, musculature and body shape, to mention just a few. Some of these features are relatively easy to change, we can dye or cut our hair or style it in different ways. Through diet and exercise we can change our weight and to some extent our shape. It is much harder to change other aspects like freckles or birth-marks, though they may be covered up with make up or removed, depending on type. But covering up freckles to the extent that if you couldn’t wear make up it would stop you doing something is an example of when NOT accepting our physical features can cause us harm. Far better to get to the place emotionally where you embrace that aspect of your appearance, you may still cover up freckles with make up at times but the drive to do so would not be so acute and certainly any sense of panic if you couldn’t would be lessened. We are all aware that how we feel about our physical appearance has a big impact on our mental and emotional well-being, but often the root of those feelings of unhappiness is not conforming to some type or standard that we think, or have been conditioned to think, is important.

In that case then definitely reaching the point where we can accept ourselves will be very healthy for us – and for some people they may feel so unhappy with some part of themselves that they go to significant lengths to change, such as that gained through plastic surgery, in order to feel they can accept themselves.

It is less helpful if we accept ourselves when the consequences may in themselves be damaging. For example, someone who is significantly overweight, yes, they need to accept the position they find themselves, but the next step must surely be to take responsibility for what they can change. Unless there is a physical condition which impacts metabolism, our weight is directly related to our food consumption habits and our

exercise patterns. Accepting ourselves can then be dangerous, self-acceptance may be liberating but understanding that we can change can also be beneficial for our health.

Mental and Emotional Features The same is true for mental wellbeing. We all have differing approaches to how we manage stress, and for most people both the things that stress us and the way deal with that stress changes over time. So, let’s think about a person who is easily stressed and doesn’t have many strategies for dealing with that stress. Accepting themselves can be useful but acknowledging that they are easily stressed may be also be very positive and that’s something that can be changed. We can learn to become more resilient to stress and we can learn more effective ways of managing that stress. We know that stress can have damaging health consequences so simply accepting that we need to live a life where we fell stressed most of the time could be very harmful. Think about some other character ‘traits’, are you the person who can always be relied upon to help out? Let us not be mistaken, helping each other is a good trait to have but not if it is to your own detriment. Underneath there may be fears that drive the behaviour, for example a fear that people will think less of you if you don’t help or maybe a reluctance to ever say ‘no’. The problem is that people who are always trying to please others often end up not being very kind to themselves. Accepting that you like to help people is fine, doing so to your own detriment is not.

Loving Yourself Rather than Accepting Yourself In many instances then what is even better than accepting ourselves is loving ourselves. That means deciding to put our own needs on our priority list. It’s ok at times to prioritise the needs of others and obviously as parents or carers that is something we must do, but if our own needs are always at the bottom of the list then that could start to have a negative impact on our own health and wellbeing. Doing things that look after us is important, making time to exercise, eat a healthy diet, take care of our mental health by enjoying social relationships and doing things we enjoy, are all important aspects of self-care and caring for ourselves is one of the ways we can demonstrate self-love. It is important to accept ourselves, but in many ways learning to love ourselves can at times be even more important. Midlife Madness A

s the years, and therefore birthdays, roll around on an ever speedier cycle, I find myself feeling, more justified than ever in getting what I want. What I really, really want, no connexion to recent Spice Girl’s reunion, just a growing knowledge that having reached this ripe old age (which is still my secret) I have earned, along with a senior citizen rail card (don’t say I’ve given the game away) the right to be pretty explicit about what I want.

So, if I order a white wine spritzer with soda, I want it with soda NOT lemonade and often I want it in a wineglass! Alternatively, I may fancy a beer, in a large wine glass, yes it does definitely fit, to the surprise of various barmaids when I have insisted that they try it – maybe I wouldn’t win best customer award with those! If I order a particular option from the menu I want it to be as stated on said menu or at least be informed prior to arriving that it may not be as stated, though let’s be honest if you put it on the menu surely, generally at least, you should make sure you have the ingredients to produce the advertised dishes! I also like having all the meals for my table delivered at once, so yes, you’ve guessed it I may have been known to complain once or twice when this has not been the case.

I also find I have become less tolerant with a whole host of other things, the volume on the TV, lights being left on, someone using the last of the milk and not replacing it (using the last of the wine and not replacing it does however bring a whole world of greater terror for the culprit) these and many more may send me into a tail spin of remonstration! Has this whole mid-life business changed my inherent

personality? Well it appears so, as I have spent most of my life being quite mild mannered, putting up with all sorts of things that have upset me (a little) and simply getting on with it, telling people it’s ok, not demanding that drinks be decanted, food improved, or some sort of retribution made.

That is certainly possible, but the alternative explanation may be that I have simply run out of my quota of tolerance! Having done it for a number of decades which in essence has meant ‘putting’ up with stuff that wasn’t what I wanted and well - I’m blooming sick of it. Maybe that is what the midlife crisis thing is all about. Deciding that now, having lived for probably more than half of my days, I think it is quite reasonable to have what I actually want, in the way I want it.

Although I imagine some people may find this a bit irritating, I find it incredibly liberating. In fact, I’m not even sure where or why I had this idea that I had to put up with stuff that I wasn’t happy about but I can say I’ve tried it and I much prefer it when I get what I want, what I really, really want. This mid-life liberation is now making me very happy, and I can say I am developing new skills like saying ‘no’ in a firm and decisive way, making my own views known in an emphatic, though clearly calm and polite way and being generally assertive as a customer rather than compliant.

All entirely reasonable of course. But I do occasionally worry that this new me is such a departure from the old me that I may be morphing from nicely mad mid lifer to grumpy old bag! Surely not, I am sure you would say.

WAYS TO ACHIEVE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

jan2019.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/12/2018 22:26 Page 19

hen it comes to the New Year, many of us use this as a time to set goals for ourselves for the next 12 months that lie ahead. Whether it’s losing an unrealistic amount of weight or starting a new niche hobby, our New Year’s resolutions are often extreme and set us up for a fall - leaving us feeling demoralised and distraught when by the time spring rolls into town. However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Top Life Coach Carole Ann Rice focuses on making people the best versions of themselves and Carole is sharing with us, 5 ways to achieve your new year’s resolutions.

W

1. Be realistic – when setting your goal, it’s important that you are realistic in what you can achieve. If you like to have a drink from time-to-time, don’t tell yourself that you are going to fully quit drinking – simply aim to cut down and manage your consumption. It’s important that you don’t set the bar too high when it comes to your resolutions, otherwise, you will end up feeling frustrated.

2. Be patient – while we all want overnight results when it comes to lifestyle changes, sadly, that is never going to be the case. If you are changing your diet or cutting down on a few unhealthy habits, the results may take a little while to show up. Rome wasn’t created in a day – you will achieve your goals if you stay patient and stay committed. 3. Focus on the small things – choosing to change or alter one small thing a day will make your goals more achievable and realistic. Instead of having lunch at your desk, go outside and eat in the park. If you’re having three cups of coffee a day, have two instead, What you do today will affect your tomorrow, so try and do something positive each day to set yourself on the right path.

4. Be accountable – having a coach or a buddy to answer to will give you the energy and drive that you need to push forward with your goals. If you’re trying to jog more, text a friend or your partner to let them know how far you went and in what time. By making yourself accountable to someone, you are much more likely to achieve your aspirations. 5. Have a positive outcome – when setting your resolutions, it’s important that you have a positive outcome in mind. Why are you trying to change things? Perhaps you have a friends wedding in the summer and you want to look great in your dress. Picture what it is you want and why you want it. If it’s something you are desperate to achieve, it’ll become the golden carrot that drags you to achieving your goals. www.realcoachingco.com

Time to Discover

The Black Horse in Great Linford

L

ocated in the picturesque village of Great Linford on the outskirts of Milton Keynes is The Black Horse, a pictureperfect pub, bar and restaurant. With its idyllic riverside setting it’s the ideal place to enjoy a drink or some delicious food with family or friends.

The Black Horse recently underwent a major refurbishment to give its interiors a more modern, stylish and contemporary feel, whilst still keeping its country pub charm. Comfy velvet chairs in deep hues, cosy corners, ambient lighting and a roaring open fire all create an atmosphere of cosy chic, once you enter you won’t want to leave. It was a cold, dark winters evening when we paid The Black Horse a visit, walking through the door is like walking into a great big hug of warm, welcoming cosiness.

After enjoying an aperitif at the bar, we made our way into the main restaurant, which has been tastefully decorated in green and brown earthy tones. There was an interesting mix of clientele from couples and groups of girls to families celebrating birthdays, it definitely seemed like the place to be. Once seated our friendly waitress ran through the menu

before bringing us a much-needed glass of wine.

Speaking of the menu, there’s plenty of choice with a delicious array of starters, sharers, pizzas, salads, and mains, all freshly prepared to order - my mouth was watering just looking at the menu. We shared some olives and rustic breads before heading into starters of thyme roasted Portobello mushrooms in a Cropwell Bishop sauce served with rustic toast. This was delicious, the taste and texture of this dish was a decadent treat to the taste buds, the creaminess of the Cropwell Bishop cheese sauce combined with mushroom flavours was a combination I could eat all day long. Hubbies choice was from the specials menu, seared king scallops and chorizo served on a bed of pea puree, not only did this dish look like a work of art it tasted just divine, the scallops were superbly tender with absolutely none of the rubberiness that can sometimes occur when they are over cooked. Our mains were accompanied with a light and refreshing glass of Pinot Grigio blush and a glass of Malbec, the wine menu gives a lot of choice without being overbearing and has wines to fit all budgets.

jan2019.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 30/12/2018 21:45 Page 37

Seared salmon fillet on chorizo mash with tenderstem broccoli and bouillabaisse sauce was the choice for me and what a great choice it was – The creamy mash had chunks of chorizo in and was a delicious combination of tastes. The broccoli was sweet and tender and the salmon was cooked perfectly, a winning dish that I need to definitely order again!

Hubbies main was buttermilk southern-fried chicken that was stuffed with nduja sausage, oozing great flavour and a melt in your mouth texture, served alongside sweet potato fries, an apple salad and lemon aioli, another winning flavoursome combination. And of course, one of us had to try steak, a 7oz fillet served with an ale glazed shallot tart topped with Cropwell Bishop custard, stilton and walnut crumb and twice cooked chunky chips - the steak was cooked exactly as requested, the tart added different tastes not normally associated with a steak dish, definitely a big hit with the taste buds. Dessert was an indulgence too far, we were all full, but because its reputation exceeds it, we decided to share the melting chocolate and peanut bomb – A shiny ball of chocolate takes centre stage on a plate of bourbon ice cream, the waitress proceeds to pour hot salted caramel sauce onto the ball and it melts before your eyes revealing peanut butter ice cream and sticky toffee pudding. A decadent desert that will have your mouth explode with all the sweet flavours that come from the dish – If you love peanut butter and chocolate then this is the dessert for you!

The Black Horse certainly doesn’t disappoint, with its sophisticated interiors, cosy corners, an extensive drink and food menu offering some delightful dishes, it is a wonderful addition to share with your family and friends, a place you most definitely need to visit. Luxury Tented Camp, Shinta Mani Wild Bensley Collection is now open

Deep in the Cambodian Jungle

The hotly anticipated Shinta Mani Wild - Bensley Collection opened last month (December 2018) crowning a transformative year for Cambodian luxury tourism. Nestled deep within the wilderness of the South Cardamom National Park, in a pristine wildlife corridor three hours’ drive south of Phnom Penh, Shinta Mani Wild - Bensley Collection offers a radical new concept for a luxury tented camp experience. From the exhilarating moment of arrival - criss-crossing the rapids via a 320m zipline, straight into the Landing Zone Bar - there will be no such thing as a typical day at Shinta Mani Wild.

Perched over 1.5km of river and waterfalls, the 14 onebedroom tents (100sqm) and one two-bedroom tent (140sqm) have been meticulously designed to evoke Bensley’s vision of what it might have been like to be on luxury safari in the jungles of Cambodia with Jacky O’, who travelled throughout the Kingdom with King Sihanouk in 1967. Stunningly realised, this extraordinary product of Bensley’s imagination provides an experience unlike any other in Asia. Creative luxury adventures include exploring the untrammelled waterways of South East Asia’s last wild estuarine ecosystem aboard a custom Bensley-designed expedition boat; or joining Wildlife Alliance rangers on anti-poaching patrols. Ever changing menus are inspired by sustainably foraged wild edible plants, as the camp’s naturalists guide guests through the forest to discover – and taste – Cambodia’s natural larder. The Boulder Spa provides chemical-free Khmer Tonics treatments including a river-stone foot massage while soaking in a waterfall pool.

Described by Bensley as a “utopia of sustainability”, Shinta Mani Wild’s comprehensive conservation and community programmes are spearheaded by the Shinta Mani Foundation, and include the provision of long-term employment opportunities to local inhabitants where there is minimal infrastructure and fewer work prospects. Shinta Mani Wild - Bensley Collection, in conjunction with the Foundation, will nurture its natural environment through partnerships with respected conservation organizations including Wildlife Alliance and The Cambodian Government. This extreme exercise in ingenuity will enable guests to explore this pristine wilderness, while making the lowest possible impact on the land, offering a luxury adventure with intimate access to one of Asia’s most stunning forest ecosystems. BOOK IT

Rates at Shinta Mani Wild - Bensley Collection start from $2,345 (approx. £1,845) per night, inclusive of all food and beverage; all private guided activities and excursions; spa treatments; personal Bensley Butler; land transfers from Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville airports, and taxes. Helicopter transfers are additional. A minimum 3 night stay is required and a minimum age of 13 years. The New GT Convertible

B

from Bentley

entley is introducing the all-new Continental GT Convertible. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Britain – and representing all Bentley knows about creating the world’s most stylish and elegant Grand Tourers – the GT Convertible is the very essence of the luxury brand. Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said: “Elegant understatement that forces you to look; engineering excellence you’ll take for granted – the extraordinary breadth of capabilities offered by the new Continental GT Convertible is unique and can only be offered by our noble British brand.

We have been building luxury Grand Tourers since the company was founded in 1919 and, as we approach our

centenary year, the Continental GT Convertible joins a highly acclaimed range – arguably the strongest and most technologically advanced portfolio of products the world has ever seen in one luxury brand.”

Elegant and sculptural exterior styling harmonises perfectly with an exquisite handcrafted cabin, featuring the highest quality leathers and sustainably sourced veneers.

The tailored convertible roof can be deployed or stowed in just 19 seconds, with the car travelling at speeds of up to 30 mph (50 km/h). This transforms the Continental GT Convertible from a luxurious coupe into an open-top Grand Tourer at the touch of a button. Seven different fabric hood colours are available, including an authentic tweed finish for the first time.

A newly designed neckwarmer (which is both warmer and quieter than in the previous generation model), is seamlessly integrated into the heated Comfort Seats, optimising efficiency and airflow around the electrically adjustable headrests. The styling highlight of the new neckwarmer is a chrome centre vane that stretches the full width of the duct, echoing Bentley’s famous ‘bullseye’ vents. Combined with a heated steering wheel, seat heaters and new heated armrests, these sophisticated comfort features create a luxurious driving experience in all environments. The all-new Continental GT Convertible heightens the sensory experience of open-air motoring with exhilarating performance. A powerful 6.0-litre Bentley W12 engine is mated to a dual-clutch eight-speed transmission. [WLTP drive cycle: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) - Combined 20.2 (14.0). Combined CO₂- 317g/km. NEDC drive cycle equivalent: fuel consumption, mpg (l/100km) – Combined 22.8 (12.4). Combined CO₂ - 284g/km.] The new powertrain uses the latest engine management technology to produce 635 PS (626 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb.ft.) of torque, and accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds), on to a top speed of 333 km/h (207 mph).

The new Continental GT Convertible also showcases major evolutions in Bentley’s unique application of technology. An advanced, fully digital, driver-focused instrument panel and Bentley Rotating Display for the

driver are among the suite of innovations. The latter features an impressive 12.3” touchscreen housed in a three-sided unit, which revolves from pure veneer to reveal either a touchscreen or three elegant analogue dials – offering customers the option of a digital detox when desired. Elegant, sophisticated and refined, the all-new Continental GT Convertible is the pinnacle of open-top luxury Grand Touring.
