Welcome
Undeniably chic, and of a quality unrivalled in the area, Affinity is the perfect medium to target the affluent people in your area.
This is the first Affinity of 2012 and I am looking forward to an exciting year.
With copies distributed free in Bedford and the surrounding Beds, Bucks and Cambs villages, the average readership per issue being approximately 50,000, you can’t fail to get your business noticed.
Hi Everyone and A Happy New Year!!
We’ve dedicated part of this issue to weddings, as January is the busiest month of the year for wedding planners after a flurry of engagements over Christmas, so look out for some ‘Dream Dresses’, stunning venues and our real life wedding story.
Our digital online eMagazine has links direct to advertisers websites thus creating even more potential customers. It is vital that your reputation doesn’t disappear during the present economic climate. It's during these times that 'smart' advertising becomes imperative.
Our fashion shoot this month will make you want to snuggle up and get cosy with PJ’s and hot chocolate in front of a roaring fire.
Advertising plays an important role during these times and should not be put on the backburner as a way to keep costs down.
And, if you’re feeling a little short of money after the Christmas festivities, and can’t afford the usual beauty treatments for your skin then why not check out this months ‘Beauty on a Budget’ on page 16 by our resident make-up artist Sabina Ventriglia.
Advertising your business does not necessarily mean spending a fortune and long term committment will always far outway a one-off advertisement placed here and there. A well planned consistent prescence will almost always pay off in the long run.
See you soon

Is it in the
Bag?
ag making as a hobby in its own right started off, as far as we can tell, as an offshoot of patchworking. While you can make a simple bag using one or two fabrics quite quickly and easily, making a bag presents the keen patchworker looking for a simple or quick project, with an attractive alternative to the rather ubiquitous cushion cover. Cushions, of course, are only seen by visitors to your home.
B
Bags are a different story. You take them out with you, and the benefits include not only having something which is visually appealing, but they also act as a mobile display of your threadcraft skills. I say “threadcraft”, because you may not patchwork your bag; you might, instead, embroider it. Or use a tapestry as the front, perhaps even use appliqué to create pictures. The possibilities are endless, of course, limited only by your imagination – your own fashion statement. I recently saw a woman in my supermarket queue pull three or four rather nice bags out of the large tote she had slung over her shoulder. Each of them was not much smaller than the tote bag when unfolded, and she filled

them all with groceries. Being interested in such things I looked at what she had done, each of them was completely different to the others. They were all very well made and attractive, and I said so. She beamed at me and thanked me for the compliment. One of our staff members has a large bag which she made specifically to hold her patchworking tools and materials for when she goes to quilting groups. It has several divisions within it and lots of pockets. Not only is it practical, it is a consummate piece of patchworking, too. It’s amazing what you can do with bags. Function and beauty combined in one article. What more can you ask for?

would like to take this opportunity to wish everybody a Happy New Year! I think it has been very tough in the last couple of years and next year will be no different. Whilst everyone is enjoying the festive holiday, the players here at Peterborough United will be preparing to try and entertain our supporters over the New Year.
I
First of all, on the 30th December we will be travelling to Middlesbrough and staying overnight, for our game on New Year’s Eve at the Riverside Stadium. After the game, we will be making the five-hour journey back to Peterborough. There will be little or no New Year’s celebrations as the players will be training at 9am on New Year’s Day in preparation for Birmingham City a day later at London Road. This will be followed by the players’ training and preparing the following four days for our televised game with Sunderland in the FA Cup third round on Sunday 8th January (3.30pm) at London Road. Immediately after the game has finished, the draw for the fourth round of the competition will be made, so as you can see, the management team and the playing staff will have had no break at all over the Christmas and New Year period. The players obviously have to make sacrifices over the festive season to prepare properly for the matches in hand. In the New Year, our games against Birmingham and Sunderland, will arguably be two of our biggest gates of the season. Obviously, not only is it a busy time for the players, but it is very busy for the staff because they won’t get a break over this period either because in between the games they will be selling tickets and ensuring the ground is ready for the fixtures. While we at Peterborough United are hard at it, I hope you lot all enjoy your week off drinking, eating and being merry!
Happy New Year

Chicksands Priory

M
VIII and was dissolved by him in 1538 and then sold by him in 1540 to a London grocer, Richard Snowe, whose son Daniel leased it and then bequeathed it to the Osborn family in 1576. It remained in their family until 1936.
ost of us have been to Chicksands Woods and we have all heard about the Chicksands US Air Base but not many of us will know about Chicksands Priory.
Since 1936 it has been Crown property and fulfilled an important part during the Second World War as RAF Chicksands and later in 1950 – 1995 it was used by the US Air Force. The MOD restored the Priory in 1997-1998 and it is now lived in after a break of twenty seven years.
It is a very unusual Priory. To begin with it was granted to the Gilbertines, not one of the regular orders usually found in the UK, secondly it was one of only 9 religious houses to be occupied by both Nuns and Canons (same as monks but they wore a black cloak and fur lined hat). They lived in separate buildings and were even separated in church by a screen.
Of the 25 monasteries/convents of the purely monastic order, Chicksands has the most substantial remains still standing in England.
The Priory was founded in 1147-53 by the Beauchamp family of Bedford Castle. Tradition says that the church divided the two cloisters. The church and one of the cloisters was destroyed in 1538.
It still retains 13th century vaulting, medieval roof timbers and stained glass. Family portraits, paintings and other historic items relating to almost one thousand years of history.
As with all the others, the Priory fell foul of Henry

As you would expect with a location that has such a long history, there are stories of strange events. Legend speaks of a nun who was walled up in the cloisters, some claim to have seen her on the 17th day of the month, there are also stories of tunnels which are said to lead from the priory to various points beyond Chicksands. There have been many other reported sightings such as monks, nuns and horsemen!!!! Weight loss
Naturally he excesses of Christmas are behind us and as we come into January we will be bombarded with articles on detoxification and weight-loss, all promising to help us loose the pounds we’ve gained over the festive season.
system work efficiently.
T
However, in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, winter is the worst time of year to start serious detoxification of the body, as cleansing the tissues are generally depleting for the body and can lead to an increased risk of becoming rundown, and decreasing our immune system inevitably leading to more coughs, colds and even flu. So here are some suggestions to gently and safely detoxify the body and loose those excess pounds over the winter months: As a result of eating a rich diet with an excess of sweet foods, the liver becomes congested, which can be partly responsible for weight gain. To counteract the overloaded system we need to eat more bitter and spicy foods, which both improves liver functioning and helps to increase the metabolic rate. Rocket, artichoke, dark leafy green vegetables, broccoli, bitter gourd, wheat grass, parsley, endive, chicory, lettuce, brussel sprouts, cauliflower to name but a few. And, the good news – very dark chocolate is bitter too! But, is to be eaten in moderation.
Oils which are rich in Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), such as evening primrose, borage and blackcurrant can be very helpful in weight loss and can be taken as a supplement. Dandelion root and chamomile tea are both very bitter and helpful in weight loss. Ginger and cinnamon help in increasing the metabolic rate and balance blood sugar levels. Cardamom is helpful in removing phlegm and mucous during or after colds. Aduki and mung beans are the two detoxification and weight loss legumes. Oily fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and herring are great too. The more unusual whole grains such as rye quinoa, millet and amaranth. These are both bitter (therefore good for the liver) and higher in protein, along with a little basmati or wild rice, which are easier to digest than wheat and potatoes. In fact, all root vegetables should be eaten very sparingly as they’re rich in carbohydrate and are difficult to digest when you are trying to loose weight. Cut down on dairy and wheat products. Light and warm foods are needed to help the digestive 14
Green tea is excellent to help burn fat. As it’s rich in great antioxidants which will naturally help the liver to detoxify. Have at least three cups a day before or after meals. However, it is a stimulant and therefore best avoided late in the evening if you want to avoid insomnia. But it is a great energiser and pick-me-up in the afternoon. Whilst it is essential to exercise when trying to loose weight and detoxify the body, it is also essential to get a good night’s sleep (at least 6-7 hours a night) as well as relaxation practised daily which will help the liver to get to work more efficiently.
Ayurvedic Tip To warm the body internally and to aid weight loss drink fresh ginger tea – made by adding fresh sliced root ginger in boiling water with a few cardamom pods, Leave for 1015 minutes to infuse and add a little honey before drinking after a meal. Beauty on a
B udget hew, Christmas and New Year is over and you’re left somewhat a little skint. All those puddings, festive drinks and between meal snacks have taken its toll on your skin. But you just don’t have the pennies this month to afford some luxury treatments. That’s why I’m here to help you find some budget skin fixers that work. I’m talking home-made face packs and products to revive your skin ready for 2012. Start as you mean to go on I say...
P
Re-Hydrate Your Skin I know I’ve mentioned it a dozen times before, but it really doesn’t get old. Drink lots of water! It not only helps your body feel reenergized, leaving the sluggish behaviour back in 2011, but it helps keep your skin re-hydrated. Drinking over your unit allowance of alcohol (that many of us are guilty of over such periods of the year), can really take its toll on your skin, leaving you looking drained, and your skin tone uneven, dry, and not to mention creating the potential for spots. So here’s a simple face pack that can be made in your very own kitchen, (while shuffling around in your new pj’s and fluffy slippers): The Ingredients: Avocado & Runny Honey. The Benefits: Huge amounts of moisturising properties from vitamin E, essential fatty acids omega-9 and omega-6 aids skin and tissue growth and keeps skin supple, and finally chlorophyll which helps regenerate our skin cells. The Very Simple Method: Mash-up a ripe avocado. Add a teaspoon of runny honey (which is super-hydrating too) and mix the ingredients together to make a smooth paste. Make sure your skin is clean and then apply the mix to your face. Leave for up to 10 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat dry. Voila… You skin has a new lease of life ready for 2012! 16

Enjoyed a few late nights? How to improve those dark circles… Aside from getting yourself a good night’s sleep, over time the skin under our eyes becomes thinner. That is why you may find the underlying blood vessels become more apparent, hence, dark circles start to show through. Here’s a natural way to improve those unwanted skin imperfections as advised by Charlotte Vohtz, author of Naturally Gorgeous. The Ingredients: A potato (that’s it). The Benefits: Helps to lighten dark circles - Potatoes contain the enzyme catecholase, which is used as a skin lightener in some cosmetics. The Very Simple Method: Cut a round slice from a potato and then slice into two half-moons. Place each 'moon' under your eyes. Leave for 20 minutes. Simple.
Budget Cosmetics for that January drought: Who: GOSH Cosmetics What: Velvet Touch Foundation Primer Apricot Where: Superdrug How Much: £13.99 I love this product. So much so that I even keep it in my kit for my clients. You can get carried away buying products that cost you ridiculous amounts of money, when so many of them give you the same end result. This particular product includes Matrixyl 3000 (a face firming peptide). Not only that, but it also evens out skin tone and restores clarity, while reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pores on the skins surface. With a silky matt finish, this product is the perfect base for any makeup. Who: Jergens Naturals What: Ultra Hydrating Moisturiser Where: Sainsburys How Much: £2.99 (hand cream) or £4.99 (body moisturiser) These cold winter months can leave your skin feeling tight, so it’s important to keep it moisturised to avoid it becoming chapped and sore. 5th Avenue Hair and Beauty Spa in Bedford, is a salon that offers both hair and beauty treatments all under one roof. There is a nail bar for specialised hand and foot treatments, treatment rooms that you can relax in and get the special pampering that you deserve from the luxury list of treatments that are available. They are open 7 days a week, including 4 late nights, 5th Avenue cater for everyone’s needs, and nothing is too much trouble. The team are always friendly and welcoming and they always put the needs of the client first. So with all the hustle and bustle of Christmas and New Year taking it’s toll on my skin I decided to try out 5th Avenues “New Year Kick Start Package” it includes an ESPA Body Polish (1/2 hour), Full Swedish Body Massage (1 hour), and ESPA Rehydrator Facial (1 hour), WOW two and a half hours of pure pampering I couldn’t wait!! I arrived at 5th Avenue to a warm welcome from my therapist who made me feel relaxed and at ease straight away – I was given the choice of products she was going to use and I chose soothing, herbal and replenishing. The relaxation then began, a full body scrub that left my skin feeling tingly and refreshed, followed by a full body massage that just made all the stresses of life disappear leaving me relaxed and rejuvenated and finally my facial that also included an extra in the form of a scalp massage whilst I was relaxing with my face mask on – I came out so thoroughly pampered and revitalised I truly recommend this package or one of the similar ones on offer as you can just disappear into your own little world of tranquillity and relaxation, not to mention how my skin felt and looked afterwards. If you want to book this treatment or any others that are on offer then contact 5th Avenue or alternatively why not pop along to their Launch Evening on 23rd January where you can enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst watching demonstrations of the new treatments that are being launched.

man of the month
Mike Hart-King Age: 33 Occupation: Operations Manager at Dunster House Resides: Hemel Hempstead
Describe yourself in three words? Hairy, loud and loving!
What do you do to relax? Play football for a physical release or play on the Xbox. If you saw our football team, 5 slims and a ginger you wouldn’t think it was very relaxing. I think the fact that we are so useless is so funny it seems to make all my problems disappear.
What do you love most about your job? The people I work with. I work with a wide variety of people all with different outlooks. I love the gratification of sharing and passing knowledge to people, seeing them develop and move forwards.
Your most extravagant purchase and why? My house – I don’t buy labels and extravagant items so it would have to be my house. It’s essential for my family, as my missus wasn’t up for living in a tent!
What makes you stand out in a crowd? I’m big, hairy, loud and ginger. I’m just a natural stand out in the crowderer!!
Best holiday destination and why? Karaincir – Turkey. This was a very relaxing, peaceful holiday. The weather was hot, beautiful surroundings and the locals were friendly. We spent all day on the loungers, in and out of the pool and eating kebabs!
Describe your 9 – 5? It’s busy, we’re a continually growing business and everyday throws up new challenges. There’s 3 depots dotted around the country that I have to make sure are running properly. We are also planning for the next depot to open up. I can’t complain we’re still growing and that’s all that can be asked for in the current economic climate.
If you could be anyone or anything what would it be? Superman – he can fly; see through walls, why wouldn’t you want to be him!
What person has inspired you? My Dad – He served in the army for 24 years and put his life at risk, after the army he trained and is now a paramedic helping to save people’s lives.
Describe your ideal woman? My missus – Suzy, I couldn’t ask for any more in a woman. She’s also taller than me, so if I say anyone else she will knock me out!!
Your top 3 movies? Shawshank Redemption, Highlander & Bugsy Malone. Saturday night you can be found where? Upstairs playing the Xbox to avoid The X Factor. I can’t stand them murdering classics! When The X Factor isn’t on I’m there spending quality time with Suzy Cam (the missus).

Effective positive thinking that brings results is much more than just repeating a few positive words, or telling yourself that everything is going to be all right. It has to be your predominant mental attitude. It is not enough to think positively for a few moments, and then letting fears and lack of belief enter your mind. Some effort and inner work are necessary.
Learning something new every day. A positive attitude can be encouraged by providing something new in your life. As a child your curiosity led you to explore and learn. Recapture that feeling today by taking a night class, studying a new language, learning to garden or anything else that interests you! Before starting with any plan or action, visualize clearly in your mind its successful outcome. If you visualize with concentration and faith, you will be amazed at the results.
Are you willing to make a real inner change? Are you willing to change the way you think? Are you willing to develop a mental power that can positively affect you, your environment and the people around you?

Wedded Bliss How did you meet? A group of us stayed in touch following a charity car rally across Europe in 2007 and Stuart was one of them; it wasn’t until a year or so later that we became a couple though.
be so it was an easy choice once we had seen it. Kate, Laura and the rest of the team were amazing both in the months before and on the day; I can’t thank them enough! What did the bridal party wear? My dress was a strapless ivory satin and chiffon gown from Pure Bridal by Romantica. It was the 2nd dress I tried on (after the obligatory princess meringue style dress that you have to try of course) and even though I tried on countless others just to be sure afterwards, I knew it was ‘the one’ – it sounds so cliché I know! I choose a shoulder length ivory veil with pearl detail and a side tiara with pearls and diamantes. My bridesmaid wore a gorgeous Alfred Angelo gown in mocha and she had a hair slide to match my tiara. The groom and best men wore chocolate brown Prince Edward jackets, ivory waistcoats with burnt orange cravats. All the bouquets, buttonholes and corsages were ivories, creams and peaches with accents of burnt orange to tie it all together.
How did the proposal happen? Stuart came to collect me from the airport after a girly holiday and I had requested a ‘chauffeur style’ sign with my name on it. When I came through into arrivals, there he was with his handwritten ‘Amy Maddix sign...it wasn’t until I got a bit closer he turned it over to reveal “Will you marry me?” on the reverse! It went quite unnoticed apart from the people immediately around us that was until my best friend came through and promptly screamed the terminal down with excitement! Where did the wedding take place? We had both our ceremony and reception at Caswell House in Brize Norton, near Witney. A beautiful family run, barn-style wedding venue in the Cotswold countryside. The venue was relaxed, informal and so welcoming – everything we knew we wanted our day to

What was your wedding day style? I’d say English country garden meets a ‘Stirling Moss’ style vintage rally – we didn’t go overboard with either theme but instead tried to incorporate small details from both into the day. For example, the table plan was a traditional picnic hamper complete with driving gloves and old fashioned helmet with the tables named after places we had visited on our rallies. We had a mixture of shabby chic jugs, jars and bottles filled with cottage garden flowers for our centre pieces and homemade rounds of wood for table name holders. Rather than a traditional wedding breakfast and evening buffet, we opted for Afternoon Tea, complete with sandwiches and scones, vintage china and tea stands, followed by a hog roast in the evening. We also had a traditional sweetie buffet which was a hit with guests of all ages What were the highlights? So many to choose from! I’ll list a few below: Being able to have an outdoor ceremony was fantastic; An October wedding was always going to be risky weather wise - I just hoped it wouldn’t rain so to be lucky enough to have a heat wave was something we never expected! Unusual guest book – some friends of ours had an old replica road sign hidden away at the venue which they got everyone to sign during the course of the day without us realising and then presented it to us during our first dance – a brilliant gift which we’ll treasure for years - slightly harder to store than your average guest book though! As cheesy as it sounds, I think just having all of our friends and family around us to celebrate the day was my personal highlight. Oh - And to feel like a princess for the day was pretty good too! How did it end? We also had a fantastic band called R.D.G play for us who are a reggae, soul and funk group from Aylesbury. I loved that from the moment they started, right through until last orders, the dance floor was never empty! There are cottages at the venue for the bridal party so it was lovely to be able to have breakfast altogether the morning after and reminisce on the amazing day before. After all the effort our friends and family had put into the planning, crafting and organising of the wedding with us, being the soppy girl that I am, I felt quite teary when we eventually left the venue the morning after and whole heartedly agreed with my brother’s idea of “shall we do it all again next week?” Where did you go on honeymoon? We honeymooned in the Canadian Rockies for 10 days, flying out to Calgary on the Monday after the wedding. We had a hire car and drove ourselves around the Rockies, finishing with a few lovely, albeit rainy days in Vancouver. Highlights for me were: visiting a husky sanctuary and meeting all the puppies, seeing bears in the wild on a river Safari, driving through a glacier national park and spending some time with my lovely new hubby!
Caswell House in Brize Norton on 1st October 2011 was the beautiful setting for the wedding of Amy Maddix to Stuart Emery. Here the happy couple share memories of their special day.

The Ride of your
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life so you want the style in which you arrive to be nothing less than spectacular.
A
rriving in your dad’s old banger is not quite the look, but how about pulling up outside the church in a Rolls-Royce Phantom? This is the grandest of cars and is what Kate Middleton chose to transport her to Westminster Abbey on her wedding day. A Bentley, Vintage Rolls Royce Silver Cloud or a Jaguar MK2 are popular options if you like your cars classic, while a Pink Cadillac, Stretch Limo ‘Herbie’ VW Beetle, London Taxi or Double Decker bus are just a few of the more unusual options. And of course you don’t have to be restricted to cars. A horse drawn carriage is perfect for that fairytale princess feel; while a helicopter that whisks you both away at the end of the night will give your wedding that ‘rock star’ feel. Remember your transport will form the backdrop to lots of your photographs, so it should suit the style of your wedding and match the colour scheme of your day – a bright yellow car might not be the best choice if you’re carrying a bouquet of pink flowers or your bridesmaids are wearing pink dresses! It should also be in keeping with the location of your venue – a horse and carriage might be fine on quiet country roads but not so great on busy city streets. If your venue is close to your home one car will be enough to take your mum and bridesmaids to the church and then come back for you and your dad, but for venues that are further away, you will need two or more cars.
classic cars, to check the interior is in good condition. Make sure the car you are shown is the actual car you will have on your wedding day. If you’re wearing a dress with a long train or a full skirt, check there is enough space for you to sit comfortably without the fabric getting creased. Ask if the car will be decorated with ribbon and make sure it will match your colour scheme. After your ceremony, the wedding car will take you and your new husband to the reception. However, if you’re one of the many couples who are now holding their ceremony and reception all under one roof, and particularly if you’re also getting ready there, you won’t need wedding transport in the traditional sense. Many couples though are reluctant to miss out on the photo opportunity that comes with having a beautiful wedding car, and the opportunity to spend time alone before the main reception gets underway. For a private moment, have a bottle of Champagne chilling on ice in the back seat and spend a few quiet moments together as you raise a glass to your new life together. Finally, don’t forget about the end of your wedding day. If you’ve stayed at your venue the night before and had your ceremony there you may decide you want to spend your wedding night at a different hotel so you’ll want to leave in style - Why not consider a classic sports car such as an Austin Healey or MG! Whatever transport you decide on, remember it’s YOUR special day!
Before you finalise any booking you should always try to see the car personally to ensure there are no bumps or dents and, in the case of 42

Dyslexia Success Who Are We? Dyslexia Success has been supporting children and adults with learning difficulties for almost 20 years by assessing for dyslexia and other learning difficulties as well as successfully tutoring those who have dyslexia on a one-to-one basis.
This is achieved by the assessment process, which not only provides evidence of a person’s difficulty but, as is most important, determines their underlying skills and intelligence capacity. In addition they can be supported successfully by specialist tutoring on a one-to-one basis.
We have been assessing students at the University of Bedford for a considerable number of years and have an excellent record of assessing students in higher education for DSA, as well as adults in the work place.
If diagnosed, concessions can be requested for examinations and course work which, if in higher education, can lead to an award of the DSA.
Dyslexia Success is one of the leading suppliers of training for identifying dyslexia and support to the African Continent, including Ghana and Uganda and we are planning to offer services to Kenya in 2012.
We now offer these services within the Bedfordshire area from our premises based in Bedford Town Centre.

learning to
‘Take Stock’ ver the last few months I have been writing each month about some aspect of learning or education and all of these have focused mainly on children and young people. But we all know that learning doesn’t stop when we leave school. Nowadays most people don’t finish training or education then work for the rest of their lives in one job, instead lots of adults continue training throughout their adult life often changing career several times. And that is just formal training, we learn in all sorts of informal ways too. A client told me recently that they had finally managed to achieve a better work-life balance after a close friend had been diagnosed with cancer. Somehow that sad event had made them question their own priorities AND make some changes. But it’s a shame when it has to be a shock or trauma that makes us change. Learning and education can change us, remember the film Educating Rita where a university course quite literally changed Rita’s life, because it gives us the chance to look at things from different perspectives.
O
One of the things that nearly always happens around New Year, as well as parties and for some a few hangovers, are conversations about
and for many the determining of New Years resolutions. Personally I’m not a great fan. It is all too easy to come up with all sorts of ideas of things we’ll give up or things we’ll start and then by mid January we are ‘beating ourselves up’ because we just haven’t managed to do it. However for all of us it is a really good time of year to take stock. Often a good way of doing this is simply by asking ourselves a few questions as they are such a good way to ‘structure’ our thinking around issues in our lives. So when you think of the year ahead what sort of things would you feel excited by? Maybe a holiday, or children reaching certain milestones, maybe you are planning to move home or job or maybe you realise that a key relationship is simply not a happy one. It is also good to think about the sorts of things that frustrate you. Are you always wanting to be a bit thinner (who isn’t!!) or fitter, or even more organised. Often it is helpful to think of your life in different spheres, work, family, friends and yourself for example and ask a few questions of yourself with regard to each of those areas:
46
Affinity Magazine January 2012 master_Layout 1 copy 14/12/2011 12:38 Page 45
Family If you are in a relationship then that’s the first thing to consider – are you happy? What kind of things do you look forward to with your partner?
Friends Spend a few moments just to identify who you see as key friends. Do you see them often enough?
Think about your children and what are the best bits and what frustrates you? What about wider family, are you worried about ageing parents or your grown up children? Work It’s worth thinking how much of your job do you actually enjoy. It might not be much more than the pay at the end, but for many that’s worth it. Try thinking what your ideal job would be. Would it be possible to make a shift? Or think about what you need to do, to get the type of job you would like.
When you do see them, do you spend time together the way you want to? Yourself Is there anything about myself I want to change? Is there anything I want to make time to do – a hobby, a holiday, time to learn a new skill etc? When you think about yourself in the future how do you see yourself – if the future you see is very different from the now then what can you do this coming year to bring these images closer?
What do you see yourself doing in 5 or 10 years time and is there anything you could do now to bring it nearer? You can hopefully now see that it is worth doing a bit of thinking – in fact I could go further and say it is worth jotting down a few thoughts. Then a day or so later look at it and see if they are still the things that are written or have other things started to seem more important. I am sure we have all seen hamsters scurrying in their wheels and often modern life is so hectic we can all have ‘hamster syndrome’ and have no time for reflection. That isn’t in itself necessarily a bad thing but it can mean we never have time to reflect. And of course as we are not in a wheel we can keep plodding on without thinking where we want to get to. The result of course is that we may not get where we want to and may be surprised to find that years are slipping by without any real change. Christmas is one of THE busiest times of year for almost everyone but after the presents are opened and the turkey eaten sometime over the following few days/weeks most people can find a few moments to think about what the coming year may hold. BUT don’t stop there. In every year there will be things we have little control over, especially at the moment when many jobs are vulnerable and money is tight for lots of people, but there are also lots of things we do have control over. When I work coaching or guiding people I encourage them to think of goals. So looking at
the year ahead is there anything you really want to achieve, if it’s winning the lottery then apart from buying tickets there isn’t SO much you can do to make it happen but for lots of other goals there are. This is where asking yourself some questions is vital. ‘Do you like your job?’ is one example. You may not, and you may decide to stick with it for very good reasons (children start school next year and at the moment this job fits in for example) but if you have at least gone through the thought processes then on a bad day you know clearly why you are there. Many people find that much more satisfying than simply drifting through another year. For everyone however there are some things that can be changed, in work this may be anything from applying for another job to undertaking training or at least seeing what courses are available and planning ahead, to maybe even starting your own business or going part time. So at the start of another year give yourself a little gift by spending some time concentrating on yourself and your life and thinking about where you are, where you want to be and how you might get there. Be careful not to create mountains for yourself, instead just remember that every journey begins with a small step and that can simply be ‘taking stock’. However mature we may be we all still have things to learn even about ourselves!

S
anctuary in Harpur Street, Bedford has been established since 2007 yet still 4 years on many people don’t even know of its existence
Sanctuary is an unusual shop that offers an extraordinary shopping experience as well as being a centre for spiritual growth and improvement. Here at Sanctuary is a shop which houses different things; the unusual things which make your life just that bit sweeter for the fact that they are different. Along with some wonderful Buddha’s, old and new, are candles, incense, stones, crystals, crystal balls and dreamcatchers. Oil burners and tarot cards, hand made boxes, Wiccan artifacts, Cherubs and Angels, fountains and so much more. The aim of Sanctuary is to sell everything spiritual from Angels down and Earth up. As soon as you walk through the door the alluring smell of incense hits you and you find yourself in a haven of calm and tranquility, there is so much to look at whether you’re buying something for yourself or a gift for a friend you will be spoilt for choice. But it doesn’t stop there - Sanctuary also offers courses and workshops on Psychic Awareness, Tarot, Palmistry and Crystal Balls as well as doing a lot of corporate work for large companies. You can visit Sanctuary for various readings including Tarot, Psychic, Crystal Ball, Telephone and email, just look on the website for more details or to book a reading. The shop is open on Wednesday mornings and all day Saturday, so if you’re passing why not pop in and see what you can find. Every three months there is an open day at Sanctuary where you can go along for Palm and Tarot readings at £5 for three questions, or if you prefer not to ask questions, your past, present, and future, with the Gateway of Fate spread, a Year Ahead spread, and a spread which tells you anything else that the cards think that you should know. So why not pop along on one of these open days for a glass of wine and some nibbles and see what it’s all about.

“This year a wasted space for your Christmas decorations, next year a fabulous room for your family” efore you take down your Christmas decorations and put them back in the loft – STOP!!
B
Now might well be the time to convert that forgotten space, which is currently being held hostage by bags and boxes of family keepsakes as well as all those Christmas decorations that will be going back up there shortly. Whether you want a fabulous master bedroom with en-suite, office space to work, a playroom or extra bedroom for a new baby you can release the space under your roof to create the extra rooms you need within your home. Converting your loft is a cost effective and less stressful alternative to moving house. With the
recent falls in property prices, increasing numbers of people are now deciding that it's better to move up rather than out. Making use of the otherwise wasted space in your loft is a great solution to your space problems. Use a loft conversion specialist When looking at converting your loft you should use a loft conversion specialist so that you can benefit from their experience and expertise. They will be able to advise on what portion of your space is usable, whether you can add a bathroom and whether you can add windows to your roof. G. Butler Loft Conversion is one such company which has over 23 years experience, they are Bedford based and have an excellent reputation in the area for the high quality workmanship and service they offer, they are also a member of the Bedfordshire Trading Standards. Gary Butler, director of the company is only too happy to discuss your requirements and show you previous work as well as provide you with excellent customer references. They cover the whole of Bedfordshire and are well known in the area for the high quality of services they offer. They are fully insured and health and safety recommended. All of their tradesmen are fully qualified, and work as part of a team to produce a quality product from start to finish. Every member of the team understands that each customer’s requirements are different, which is why they will treat every loft conversion individually, tailoring the service to meet the customer’s needs to ensure they get the fully functional and beautiful loft conversion they've always wanted.

Spinach & Ricotta
Canelloni Ciao everyone! This dish is high in iron and makes a great midweek meal for all the family. Although spinach won’t give you superhuman strength, Popeye properly demonstrates spinach as an ideal super food. Loaded with all sorts of vitamins and minerals, spinach can supply a huge helping of nutrients for the body. Spinach is believed to originate in ancient Persia, the land of modern day Iran. Persian traders introduced spinach to India and Nepal, working its way over to China in the mid 7th century, where it gained considerable popularity. It only later made its move west, becoming a choice green in Italy. In 1533, Italy’s Catherine de Medici would become the queen of France, bringing her beloved spinach with her. Almost every meal she ate incorporated spinach, which became known as “Florentine”, still used to this day to describe meals presented on a bed of spinach. As well as a lovely vegetarian dish this is one sure way of getting kids to eat their greens...try it they will love it.

Dessert Wines s it that we drink too much, too fast, with dinner? So when we get to dessert, coffee seems like the only reasonable beverage option? If so, we need to learn to pace ourselves, because we're missing out on dessert wines.
I
Always serve chilled and in a small liqueur style glass, a good dessert wine should be sweet but not cloying, with the balance of acidity matched by a grapey flavour with a tangy finish. It's important to make sure that the wine is sweeter that the pudding itself otherwise the wine will get lost and appear dry, it's all about complimenting the degrees of sweetness. Botrytis cinerea or more commonly known as 'Noble Rot' is a fungus that affects wine grapes, usually when they are ripe and in wet weather but if drier conditions follow then the grapes become partially raisined which leads to a concentration of sweetness and flavours. This natural process is encouraged by producers of sweet wine and they can produce some quite stunning results. French Sauternes from Bordeaux is one of the most famous but Australia has some amazing wines with sweetness levels at near biblical proportions. South America too is getting its act together and is now showing some great examples at very reasonable prices. Most come in half bottles which helps keep the price down and also makes a good opportunity to try different types with different puddings to find the one you like.

Topping 75–100g chocolate, 50% cocoa solids , broken into pieces.
Padded Gillet £8 Heatons
Method You will need a 24 x 11cm loaf tin, or the equivalent square tin. Butter the tin and line it with cling film, allowing a generous excess to overhang the edges. Crush the biscuits into small pieces by placing them in a plastic bag and bashing with a rolling pin. In a small pan, very gently melt together the butter, sugar, syrup, cocoa and chocolate. Remove from the heat and cool until tepid. Add the biscuits and stir in the chocolates and sweets. Mix well and spoon into the tin. Cover the top with the excess cling film and set in the fridge for a few hours. Once set, remove the cake from the tin by pulling on the cling film and easing it out with a knife. For the topping, place a small heatproof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water, making sure the base of the bowl does not touch the water. Add the chocolate to the bowl and heat until it melts, stirring occasionally, then pour over the cake. Store in the fridge - until you serve it.

Questions from readers Why does my boyfriend cheat on me? I have always shown him nothing but love. The cards are telling me that your boyfriend is shown as someone who wants a passionate relationship, but needs someone who is more than just a doormat who allows him to walk all over them. Showing nothing but love is showing only some of who you are. If you show him the real you, rather than the trying too hard to please you, you stand more chance of him being able to be himself in return, instead of looking elsewhere for his kicks. Relationships are all about love, pain, passion, and at times boredom they are not about perfection. Will I have children? I am heading for my mid thirties, and have been trying for so long. My cards are showing me the Empress card and the Queen of Swords, which show that you should expect children when you think that you are too old to have them. They also suggest that the stress which you are
going through makes conceiving and keeping a pregnancy harder, and that when you have ‘given up’ the lack of stress allows conception. (There are certainly many cases of newly adoptive parents conceiving for similar reasons.) I seem to be getting nowhere in my work, yet others who have been in the company I work for less time, and work less hard have bypassed me for promotion. Am I doing something wrong? My cards are showing me a man who is a perfectionist by nature, and is as such not always happy with the work that he has done. This also means that the work that you do takes longer to get through, so although your workload is heavier, there is less to show at the end of the day. No one would tell you not to do a good job, but it may be wise to do a good enough job, rather than to constantly try for absolute perfection. That way you would at least be in the running for promotion.
A spell to disperse Bullies Some small sticks from a dead branch, (one thicker than the rest) A leather Cord Make a bundle of small sticks with a thicker stick in the centre, and prepare to tie it loosely with a leather cord, or string. As you lay out the sticks, before tying them, give each one the name of one of the people who are bullying you or who are using bullying tactics, the thickest stick, should be named for the person who causes most difficulty. This should remain in the centre of the bundle, when the string around it is tied. Once it is tied: Gently begin to ease the centre stick away from the others, not rushing it, but taking it gently and manoeuvring it out of its position. Say:
‘This stick which holds the rest together, will no more rule my ways, and as the rest desert the leather I will see better days. But all I send to all I name, is three times back, from whence it came’ Gradually wiggle out the remaining sticks one side and put them safely to one side. When the spell is finished, put them outdoors, back where you found them. This spell relies on not wishing harm, but reflecting problems back to those who cause them.

Jasper Most Jaspers are useful for the removal of hurt and negativity. The red Jasper is known specifically for the removal of old hurts, including old family issues. It is a deep rusty red, like polished brick, but rarely seen in its raw state in crystal shops, where it is usually sold as a tumbled stone or polished slice or sphere. Red Jasper is gently stimulating and also an extremely protective stone. It can bring a halt to unfair situations, bring problems to light and provide insights into difficult situations. Red Jasper is thought to calm the emotions and help with dream recall. A stone of good health, Red Jasper is also believed to strengthen and detoxify the circulatory system, blood and liver, if worn constantly.
Moon stone Is said to aid fertility and help with pregnancy and child birth, It is also thought to calm difficult hormonal tendencies, like hot flushes, and bloating. It is the stone associated with The Goddess Diana, the Huntress, and as such is thought to bring strength and insight to women, and a motherly tendency to all who wear it. In many cultures, for example in India, it is regarded as a holy, magical gemstone, a 'dream stone' which brings the wearer beautiful visions at night. Many beautiful rings are made for this reason, usually in silver, rather than gold, as a connection with the moon. It is a beautiful stone which comes from the feldspar family of stones, with some varieties showing a blue surface schiller, which is either an electric blue or plays rainbows of light, depending on the clarity of the stone, and the way that it is moved about.

Quiet night in with..... t is a mere year and a half after September 11th, and America has settled into an uneasy routine, still keeping an eye on the alert levels spawned from the attacks of 2001. A date that nearly claimed the lives of John Corey and FBI agent Kate Mayfield (now Kate Mayfield Corey). Back then, despite their best efforts, they failed to capture Asad Khalil – aka ‘The Lion’ and the Libyan managed a clever escape. But before he left, he made a promise to return, and a promise to kill Corey and Mayfield, along with a growing list of others.
breakneck-paced race against time between two utterly driven men, between good and breathtaking evil. Acclaimed as the finest of Nelson DeMille's John Corey thrillers, it is the perfect introduction or reintroduction to one of the most compelling heroes in fiction.

‘The Lion’ – is the most dangerous man alive. A ruthless Libyan terrorist with an agenda of death and destruction, he is back in the US to seek out his number one enemy, ex-NYPD homicide detective John Corey.
The pace of this book is literally that of a Rollercoaster as you hang on for dear life wondering what will happen next. Add to this cracking prose and a tale that doesn’t let up from the moment it starts which leaves you grasping for a suitable break area so you can get some sleep. This is a Phenomenal book that takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and will keep you up all night
But Corey is equally intelligent, equally ruthless – and equally determined to wipe Khalil off the face of the earth…. From the first page to the last line, this is a
