How to Sleep in Hot Weather There’s nothing worse than trying to sleep in hot weather, it’s something us Brits are just not used to, so what do we do when it’s a particular scorcher of a night? We spoke to the experts at OnlineBedrooms.co.uk who gave us their tips on making sleeping more bearable in hot weather.
Keep blinds shut in the day The sun tends to be the most piercing in the day so keep your blinds and curtains shut in your room to prevent the sun from coming in and making it hot. This should help keep your room stay pretty cool. Chill your socks Sleeping in socks is the last thing you want to do when it’s warm, but putting them in the fridge or freezer beforehand will actually help to regulate the temperature of your body, leaving you feeling cool and allowing you to sleep.
Swap out your bed sheets Most of us will have heavier bed sheets to keep us warm throughout the year. Try switching your heavier duvet and sheets for something more lightweight.
Allow air to flow through your house in the day Try to leave your windows open in the day if you are at home and keep all bedroom doors open to allow the cool air to flow through the house. By the evening your upstairs should feel pretty cool.
Run your wrists under cold water If you find yourself getting too warm and need to cool down quickly try running your wrists under cold water for a few minutes. This is often recommended for people experiencing anxiety as a way to cool their body down. Put ice in front of the fan One popular method for cooling down involves putting a tray of ice cubes in front of your fan or window. As the ice begins to melt, the fan will blow the cool air from the melting ice around the room.
Keep a spray bottle by your bed You could always give your bedsheets a quick spritz with water if you’re feeling too warm. But be careful not to drench your bedding. Take a cold flannel to bed Pop a flannel into the freezer a few hours before going to bed and place it on your forehead as you try to fall asleep. The cold temperature on your head should cool you as you sleep
Avoid daytime naps The warm weather can make us lethargic but try to avoid taking a nap during the day. This could add to your trouble of falling asleep at night. Keep hydrated One of the key things to do in warm weather is to keep hydrated as your body is already losing water through sweating. Be sure to take some water with you to bed to keep hydrated through the night.

Sun Damage and The Risks we Take As temperatures begin to rise in the UK, a new study suggests millions of adults are taking unnecessary risks when it comes to protecting their skin against sun damage. The research, commissioned by dermatology consultants at independent charitable hospital, King Edward VII’s, explored the nation’s attitudes towards protecting their skin against the suns’ rays. It found that, despite the risks associated with sun damage, there is still a cavalier attitude amongst many individuals when it comes to wearing sun protection. Nearly one in 10 Brits admit to only wearing sun cream when on holiday abroad and around 4 million completely shun sun protection in the UK, even during hot weather. One in 20 adults also wrongly believe they don’t need to wear sun protection at all. Also of concern, 1.4 million adults are still using sun cream they purchased over 10 years ago. This is far longer than the recommended 6-24 months that a cream will keep and be effective for.
Dr Catherine Borysiewicz, Dermatology Consultant at King Edward VII’s Hospital said: “Sun protection is vital, whether you’re in the UK or abroad, and irrespective of your skin colour. Sun creams and sprays provide the necessary protection from skin damage to potentially long-term or even fatal conditions. It is also important to purchase new sun protection each year, as creams do expire and will become less effective.” Tanning Pressure The quest for sun-kissed skin is also leading some to take drastic measures. Nearly a quarter of UK adults agree they don’t feel good without a tan and around one fifth agree they feel pressured to be bronzed by influencers and celebrities. Furthermore, just over a tenth of respondents agree they’d be willing to risk skin cancer if it meant having a sun tan, with nearly a third agreeing they’d used sunbeds in the past. One in 10 agreed that they had bought and tried potentially dangerous tanning products such as Melanotan-2 to darken their skin, using it either as an injection or nasal spray.
Catherine continues: “It’s extremely concerning to see the lengths people are going to just to achieve a sun tan. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer but many patients could have prevented their diagnosis by taking greater care of their skin. The rise
in popularity of tanning products, like Melanotan-2 that can be taken as nasal spray or injection is very worrying. These products are potentially very dangerous and have been linked to cancer. Really, the only safe way to achieve an all over, year-round tan, without the health risks is using fake tan.”
Consultants in King Edward VII’s Hospital’s dermatology clinic treat a comprehensive range of skin conditions affecting all areas of the body. Services include mole mapping, diagnosis and treatment for inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema and acne and treatment for skin cancers to offer early access to treatment for skin cancer, which can have a positive impact on the long term prognosis for patients. According to Cancer Research UK 100% of people with melanoma skin cancer will survive a year or more after treatment if the disease is caught at its earliest stage, compared with 53% of cases diagnosed in its latest stage. Catherine’s Top Sun Safety Tips
● Use in-date SPF - SPF actually has a use-by date, which is typically around a year, but it varies by brand. Check the bottle to see how long your product should last, and if in doubt, throwing out last year’s sun creams and using an in-date SPF ensures it’s still providing maximum protection.
Cover your whole body - when applying sun cream, people tend to apply to their face, arms and chest, but can often forget to protect other parts of their body like their eyelids, scalps, and feet, but these can still burn like any other part of the body. Use sun cream all over your body, and cover up with light clothing, hats and sunglasses to boost your protection when out and about.
●
● Don’t underestimate the British sun - we can have some pretty hot days in the UK, and using sun protection shouldn’t just be reserved for holidays and trips abroad. We should actually be using SPF every day to prevent sun damage, particularly on parts of the body that are always exposed like your neck and face, even in overcast weather.
If you do get burnt - cool down your body with a cold compress. This will pull heat away from the site of the burn and help ease inflammation. A cool shower and/or a wet towel placed on the affected area can provide some immediate respite. Once cooled, you can add a moisturiser, such as Aloe Vera to the affected area to soothe the skin.

Midlife Madness I love the English language for a whole variety of reasons and one is that we have incorporated into our day to day language lots of common phrases that really don’t make a lot of sense at all – however as native English speakers we will all know what they mean. I imagine we’ve all been told to get our skates on yet I bet with few exceptions we’ve never actually done that! Maybe we’ve also been exhorted not to beat around the bush when there was not a bush in sight and I’m not even sure I’d know how to beat around it. I’ve shared many thoughts with many people but never have I been given a penny for them.
In terms of encouragement I have been urged to bite the bullet – in my head it sounds uncomfortable at best but of course no one expects you to actually bite a bullet what it means is to have courage and get on with something you’d probably rather not get on with –apparently it was first used by Rudyard Kipling!
I’ve long been familiar with the ‘break a leg’ particularly used for performers which I thought initially was a rather cruel wish, apparently theatre types are rather superstitious so its bad luck to say good luck and there are various thoughts about what it can refer to – the curtain raising leg breaking due to too many ovations or standing by the leg on stage so as a performer you would be paid. But my point is you shouldn’t have to think too hard and as native speakers we don’t but must we seem a pretty callous lot urging people to break a leg!!
I find myself wondering how many people have expected a piece of cake when doing something
described thus, or in a macabre way expecting fire when exhorted to go down in flames! I mean there is an element of sense in some idioms better late than never – unless of course you were on your way to catch a plane in which case late might indeed mean never. I get hit the sack – king size foam memory beds haven’t been around for ever – but right as rain??? What on earth are we on about, we all know we need rain but I never really get excited about it – if I had my way I’d organise it so it falls regularly between the hours of midnight and 4 am. Clearly the sea is full of fish so yes it will be accurate to say there are plenty of other fish in the sea but when applied to romantic breakups it doesn’t sound very complimentary and as pacifist I’m all for very burying hatchets unless they were to be used for splitting wood – not a hair, heck that would be an impossibility! I have been known to jump on the bandwagon, obviously not literally unless you count the time I rode with the band to a gig with a friend, and I’m always puzzled by the idiom it takes two to tango – I mean obviously!! So, having gone the whole nine yards and thrown caution the wind (though it was very tricky to get hold of) I wish I’d never really started thinking about the idiocy of some of our idioms.
But the ones that really puzzle me are Murphy – I mean why did he have so many laws, all of which seem a bit to do with bad luck or unfortunate happenings and Larry – I mean who was Larry and why was he so happy and much like THE scene in when Harry met Sally my feelings are ‘I’ll have what (s)he’s having’.

The Beauty of a Plod We live in a society where we like quick wins and big leaps but much of life isn’t about those it’s about the slow plod – putting one foot in front of another – repeatedly. Essentially that’s what we do day in and a day out, we keep on going.
When we do that it feels ordinary and often it feels like we aren’t making much progress BUT if we stop and look back often we can see that we have indeed made progress and perhaps developed or grown along the way. The problem is that sometimes we never stop, rarely reflect and that robs us of the opportunity to see where our daily plodding has taken us and indeed how that plod may have changed us and helped us to grow.
There are lots of things I love about our modern society but there are some changes to the way we think and to what we regard as normal that are not, to my mind, very helpful. The way we have developed a culture of NOW for example. Like many I’ve become frustrated with having to wait a week for a new episode of my favourite TV drama as I’m so used to having all episodes available so I can ‘binge’ or the way in which we can order something online and often have it delivered on the same day! In fact, it sometimes seems this immediate culture has weirdly robbed us of NOW in some ways – now as in the present moment and appreciating that is all we really have.
It can easily sound like a contradiction, being in the moment, the now but also allowing time to stop and look back but both are essential as indeed is looking forward. Like all aspects of life, we need balance.
Looking back This can be helpful to see how far you have come, it’s definitely worth it when we scaled a physical height if nothing else the views are usually amazing and will often make the climb feel worth it. Much the same with an emotional journey or when working on a project. It’s helpful to see what progress you’ve made and it’s often necessary to then make further plans. The small steps add up. In the midst of it, progress may be hard to see, but each step takes you forward and often with hindsight we gain
further clarity as well as pat ourselves on the back for keeping going. The same is true of times when we’ve maybe felt emotional overwhelmed we look back and the fact that we kept going, kept plodding shows us how strong we really can be when we need to be.
Now We need now – we need to be in the moment not dwelling on the past – very different form occasional reflection, because nothing can be done about what has happened, though we owe it to ourselves to learn from the past. Being in the present moment helps us to appreciate the beauty around us, savouring the moment not constantly being in a rush.
Try considering for a moment when you last had a coffee and just enjoyed the coffee, when you stood in nature and just enjoyed nature, when you breathed and just concentrated on your breath?
Make sure as you go through life that you regularly allow time when you can slow down and be!
Looking Forward A balanced life this is needed for our wellbeing. Obviously, some things happen by chance but a lot happens when we have done a bit of planning. Rarely would we have a holiday, start a new job or even put food on the table without a little bit of planning.
So, it’s not contradictory to be in the present as a way of living life but also to have times when you deliberately look ahead and plan, with intention, creating the next chapter of your life. Like all areas of life try to achieve some balance, try to increasingly live in the now and keep moving forward but occasionally look back to see where your day to day plodding has brought you and how much you may have grown and developed.
But also try to have some times when you purposely look forward – what is the next chapter for you? What do you need to move onto to achieve the things you dream for? www.facebook.com/groups/AAYGroup.

Fry’s Footie Corner
It seems only a few minutes since the last campaign ended, but here we are, looking forward to the beginning of the 2022-2023 campaign. That tinge of excitement is always enhanced when the fixtures are released and while for us at Peterborough United, a trip to Cheltenham Town and a home game with Morecambe isn’t the most glamorous of matches, we are just glad to be back in action.
Last season was difficult for us with relegation back to League One, but we ended the season in a positive fashion, and we need to keep that feel good factor going. The manager has worked incredibly hard during the close season, making sure he has got the players back in good condition and alongside myself and the owners, we have managed to secure the signings that we all felt would strengthen the group.
Of course, the proof is always in the pudding. However, everyone is determined to have a strong season and reward the supporters for their loyalty. Away from Peterborough United, a lot of the talk during the summer has been about England with the World Cup in Qatar just around the corner.
I am not a fan of a winter tournament personally. I believe it has a massive impact on the domestic leagues, but we are where we are and we have to make the most of it. I think this is a huge tournament for Gareth Southgate. He has already taken us to a semi-final and a final in the Euro’s and the World Cup – but we want to get that one further.
We have the players to do it. I don’t think the results in the summer were great, but I think there are mitigating circumstances to them. However, there will be no excuses when Qatar comes around. We need to get over the line. I am sure we can. The Premier League is shaping up to be a really competitive one this time around. Liverpool and Manchester City have strengthened their squads, Tottenham are having a right go and Arsenal also look a lot stronger. At the time of writing, clubs like Manchester United are getting left behind in terms of their recruitment, but with the transfer window open until the end of August, there is still plenty of time or the manager there to make some key signings.
I like what Nottingham Forest have done so far in the transfer market. It is great to see a club of their size back in the Premier League after so long out of the top division. Fulham too will be competitive while AFC Bournemouth have a strong group of players including former Posh winger Siriki Dembele. Enjoy the summer!

Here We Go Again It’s the mother of all contemporary musicals, a global, recordbreaking super trouper of a show that’s been seen by over 65 million people worldwide, in 50 productions and 16 different languages. MAMMA MIA!, the feelgood musical with a score of irresistible ABBA songs, has given birth to two smash-hit films: the first, released in 2008, sank even the mighty Titanic at the box office; the second, 2018’s MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again, is the most successful musical movie sequel of all time. Now, with theatres open again, the show embarks on a new UK Tour. It’s likely to prove just the pick-me-up that audiences crave.
Now 23 years old, MAMMA MIA! has established its place in theatre history – so it’s almost hard to believe that right up until its very first opening night, on 6 April 1999 at the Prince Edward Theatre in London’s West End, many theatre pundits were anticipating a flop. Looking back, Judy Craymer – the visionary producer and creative dynamo who dreamt up the idea for the show and powered it tirelessly to spectacular success – chuckles at the nail-biting uncertainty that surrounded that world premiere. “A lot of people doubted us,” she remembers. “The Lion King opened about the same time, and we were very modest by comparison.” Many were expecting a kind of ABBA tribute show about the band – “they just couldn’t get their heads around it. They were constantly asking me who was going to play Frida and Agnetha.” Even ABBA songsmiths Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus had their doubts: “They said, OK Judy, it’ll be a small show, just in London, and if it doesn’t work it’ll close.” They needn’t have worried. Together with writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd, Craymer had achieved a landmark theatrical triumph with blockbuster, crossgenerational appeal, that would delight Abba’s loyal fans and win them legions of new ones. This was, though, no overnight feat – the show had a long gestation. Craymer, who trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama in stage management, was working in the production office of musical-theatre royalty Tim Rice in the early 1980s when she first conceived of the idea. Rice was in the throes of writing Chess, his collaboration with Andersson and
Ulvaeus. One of Craymer’s first tasks was to collect Ulvaeus from the airport, and the pair quickly struck up a friendship. “It was huge fun,” Craymer remembers. “Chess was a big project, and then there was the cast album, so I was flying to Stockholm with Tim Rice every week, working in Benny and Björn’s studio. Then we did a crazy tour of Europe with about 5,000 people – the whole of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Ambrosian Choir, and all the artists. It was very exciting, and I got lots of experience.” Crucially, she also had access to the ABBA pair, “which was very fortunate, because otherwise I’m not sure they would have taken this on. I had to pester them for a long time!” Spending so much time in their company, she rediscovered their music. “I listened to their songs with a whole different ear, having met the guys. I’d play them over and over again on my cassette player, and I was fascinated that Björn had written these lyrics. They meant so much, and they were about strong women. They take you on a journey. And that was the beginning of me falling in love with those songs.” Craymer began to see the dramatic potential in ABBA’s infectious pop. “They spoke to me as theatre songs. You’d be lucky to have two like that in a musical, let alone 20. So, I started thinking about how to turn them into narrative.”
At first, she wasn’t sure what form this dramatisation would take – she considered a film, or a children’s show. But she felt sure that, because the music was held in such affection, it should be “weddings, holidays, something celebratory, because everyone listens to ABBA in a happy moment”. She had a meeting with Johnson – who at the time was working on TV’s Band of Gold – over egg sandwiches in a Baker’s Street café, and Johnson suggested centering the story on a mother and daughter. Craymer knew at once she’d found the right formula. “We were both penniless, Catherine was a single mum,” she recalls. “I only had about £1,000, so I said, I’ll pay you £500 now, and £500 when you’ve written it.” The next step was a meeting at Ulvaeus’ home in Henley-on-Thames – “and we couldn’t’t afford the train fare! It was all very hairy, but somehow we did it. And I introduced Björn to Catherine and she was too shy to

pitch the idea, so I had to – and then I had to stop her stealing the soap from his bathroom as a souvenir. We had nothing to lose. It’s so difficult to get a project going, but we just got on with it.” Lloyd, who came on board as director, shared their passion, and together, “living on sandwiches”, the trio put together a female-led show full of joyous romance and fierce mother-daughter affection: an exuberant matrimonial comedy set on an idyllic Greek island, with a playful nod to the family dramas of classical tragedy. It’s the strength of that narrative, Craymer believes, that sets MAMMA MIA! apart from other jukebox shows. “It’s an original story, and there’s a structure, and properly developed characters and themes,” she says. “I do like to think that MAMMA MIA! raised the bar.”
That universal appeal has seen the show play to packed houses around the world. In New York, it helped revitalise Broadway after 9/11, its warmth proving an unexpected balm for theatre-goers in the traumatised city. In 2011 it became the first Mandarin-speaking production of a Western musical in China. And Craymer has particularly fond memories of the opening of the Japanese production – “because of theatre etiquette there, the cast can’t leave the stage until the audience stop clapping. I thought they’d be there all night!” Hollywood quickly wanted in on the act, and Craymer found herself fielding eager calls from several studios. There was some pressure to consider a younger star for the leading role of mum Donna, but Craymer held out for the team’s original vision, and for her ambitious dream casting – none other than Meryl Streep, who leapt at the chance. It was a coup Craymer repeated with the film’s sequel, in which Cher delivers a magnificent diva turn as Donna’s mother. The icon had, according to Craymer, already been to see the show twice in London, where she danced in the aisle; after making the film, she went on to record her own album of ABBA covers. "Over the last 20 years, there have been so many white-knuckle rides,” Craymer reflects. “As a producer, you need enormous powers of persuasion, and a lot of tenacity.” And she’s still up for more: even during the 2020 lockdown, she was busily planning for a third MAMMA MIA! movie. “I wanted something to cheer us all up!” she laughs. “It’s something I have in my sights. I think there’s a trilogy there. There are lots of wonderful ABBA songs that we haven’t yet mined, and Björn and Benny have written a couple of new ones. They’re keeping them under wraps for now, but they should prove very useful!”
In the meantime, she’s looking forward to MAMMA MIA! touring the UK again. “I’m really excited that we are taking MAMMA MIA! on tour around the UK once again.
Whatever comes next for this sunniest of shows, there’s sure to be an audience for it. To misquote those famous, singalong lyrics: ‘how can we resist it’? Interview by Sam Marlowe
