Crucial Skin Changes in your 40s

Our forties seem to be game-changing years when it comes to our skin. Hada Labo TokyoJapan’s top selling skincare brand - has found that 48% of women noticed more lines on their face when they hit this decade, with 39% noticing more dryness and 34% spotting a lack of elasticity.

It’s certainly a turning point for our skin care regime too as the Hada Labo Tokyo research discovered how more than half of women changed their skincare routine when they hit their forties with 88% of women who are not yet 40, anticipating making changes when they hit this age.

Sadly, the same research has found that fewer than one in 10 of us always feel happy with our skin’s appearance. As we age, our skin- the body’s largest organ- naturally loses moisture, which can cause wrinkles to form. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and pollution can also cause changes to our skin as can our dietary choices. Plus, hormonal changes can also have an impact on our skin such as the hormonal changes that occur during the menopause.

The Menopause

This huge hormonal life change tends to occur in women aged between 45 and 55 and it can cause noticeable changes in the skin’s appearance.

During perimenopause - the period leading up to menopause - a woman’s ovaries produce less oestrogen, causing an imbalance with the hormone progesterone. It’s oestrogen that helps skin to maintain its plumpness and moisture, so when we lose it, our skin can dry out, this lack of oestrogen also means lower collagen levels.

Collagen helps our skin remain firm. It’s important to work with these skin changes that are caused by the menopause, so we can help keep our skin in great condition.

Change in Routines

Our daily routines really have experienced a serious shake up in recent years, mainly due to

the lifestyle changes that were borne from the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the latest Hada Labo Tokyo research, over a quarter of women feel their routine has changed a lot due to an increase in working from home.

Nearly half of women are washing their hair less, 43% have noticed a change in their sleep patterns and 40% have changed the hours in which they have meals. In fact, 42% blame a poorer diet for negatively affecting their skin health.

Along with wholefoods, antioxidant-rich diet, packed with colourful fruits and vegetables, cleansing facial skin twice a day is vital. A quick cleanse is fine in the morning, but a deep cleanse is essential in the evening. Try massaging cleanser into facial skin for a minute or two before removing.

Sun Damage

UV light from the sun can also play a big role in the health of our skin. Worryingly, research shows that 67% of women don’t use a daily sunscreen. Plus, on warm summer days in the UK, 38% admitted that they would only apply sunscreen once before they leave the house, and nearly a quarter of women admit that they don’t carry around sunscreen during the summer months.

Try applying sunscreen to your face at least 3 times a day.

Too Much Screen Time

Always on zoom calls? We’re scrunching up our faces as we sit on calls, leading to more fine lines and wrinkles. All the light from our screens can also lead to a dull appearance, with the rise in working from home only contributing to the rise in zoom calls and screen time.

Anti-ageing Skin Facial Sheet Mask

A DIY facial massage at least twice a week, works the 40 or more muscles in the face. The more you move them, the more lifted, tightened and toned they become, busting stress at the same time.

Hangxiety: How to Prevent The Fear

Google searches for the term "hangxiety" have risen by 120% in the past year, suggesting many of us are left feeling anxious the morning after.

Alcohol is hard on the brain and body. Dehydration is certainly a factor, but there are less well known effects at play as well. On average it takes about a day to fully metabolise the alcohol after a night out.

Alcohol compromises our ability to hold back emotions - a brain factor called "gating". Combined with other weakening factors such as fatigue from staying up late and poor quality of sleep that alcohol gives us, emotions can be unusually close to the surface the following day.

While alcohol is still in the system new neural nets don't form properly, and learning is compromised. Rather than making solid new connections while learning, the dendrites (the little neuron arms) tend to miss their targets and connect where they shouldn't. It is the same effect as seen in foetal alcohol syndrome, when there is alcohol in the system new neural nets struggle to form. Even in an adult this can cause shrinkage to the brain and damage the nervous system.

As a result a hangover gives us a glimpse as to what lies under the surface of our conscious mind. If anger is the underlying propensity, after a night out "hangry-ness" will be the result. If anxiety is your underlying habit (as it is for so many), "hangxiety" will be at the forefront. For others, low mood or depression can come to the fore.

We spoke to the experts at Brainworks Neurotherapy who share their 7 tips to help with 7 “hangxiety”

1. Prevent the Dehydration

The dehydration alcohol causes is normally to blame for the inevitable next day headache. While you’re out, remember to keep yourself hydrated. Keep drinking water throughout the night in between the alcoholic drinks. Although it may not stop the headache all together, the added hydration will certainly help relieve some of the anxiety.

2. Line your Stomach

Before going out make sure to eat something. Drinking on an empty stomach can be dangerous. Not only will people become drunk quicker, but there

is an increased risk of getting sick the next day. The lack of food will make the alcohol more difficult to process in the body and then detox, prolonging the “hangxiety” symptoms.

3. Sleep it Off

Alcohol can negatively impact quality of sleep. A 2013 study found that sleep deprivation amplified reactions in the amygdala and anterior insula. These are parts of the brain that are associated with anxiety. By sleeping and resting, the body will calm down and alleviate some of the anxious feelings. Sleeping will also give the reactions in amygdala and anterior insula time to regulate.

4. Rehydrate Yourself

Consumption of alcohol causes dehydration and also stops the production of electrolytes. The brain needs electrolytes to function, keep balanced, carry electrical charges and importantly regulate hydration. After a night out, reach for a sports drink to rehydrate quickly. These are packed with electrolytes which will increase the body’s low electrolyte levels, rehydrate and improve brain function.

5. Eat to Regulate Blood Sugars

Alcohol can play havoc with the body’s blood sugar levels. A slump in blood sugars can cause nausea, which contributes to the “hangxiety” symptoms. To help with this opt for a lighter meal, containing complex carbs to increase blood sugars. This will help the body regulate the blood sugar levels and alleviate any feelings of nausea.

6. Speak to your Friends for Reassurance

To ease your mind, speak to the people you went out with for some reassurance about the previous night's events. Getting your thoughts and worries out there will help ease the “hangxiety” and your friends can provide some reassurance and hopefully put your mind at rest.

7. Set Yourself a Limit for Next Time

Even after the hangover symptoms have passed there may be lingering “hangxiety”. Ahead of the next night out think about how to prevent the “hangxiety”. Set yourself a limit, for some this could be a number of drinks across the night. For others, it may be a time limit for each drink to avoid drinking too quickly.

Midlife Madness

As we go thought life we collect certain badges of honour. It may start simple with literal badges for achievement or effort – I am not a proud Blue Peter badge owner but I wish I was! As we get older the badges change a bit and we collect certificates and qualifications. But we might also get our ears (or other places) pierced, get tattoos, or wear particular clothes that somehow add to our sense of identity and may be worn with a great sense of pride.

Lots of people would wear an engagement or wedding ring with pride and of course ‘labels’ may be a great source of pride/honour to many – you wouldn’t hide a Louis Vuitton jacket or a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. They can be a badge that says look at me aren’t I doing well!

There are other less glamourous badges of honour too –children may have a sense of pride in a plaster following a break or even scuffed knees or minor injuries from sporting ‘heroism’.

Being pregnant is something most people feel immensely proud of and clearly, it’s something that becomes quite tough to hide, but many women enjoy the extra attention that being pregnant can bring -having a baby is a wonderfully life affirming thing and many people will chat and comment on brand new babies.

As we age, these badges may change, grey hair can be something that is seen as a bit of a badge (wrinkles less so perhaps) and even things like a walking stick can be seen as a ‘badge’ whilst having enormous practical advantages too.

As a grandma I have collected a number of badges lately though not all as tasteful as others.

Obviously, I love pushing the pram proudly or when in cafes wandering around with our little fairly newborn

grandson and I delight in the oohs and aahs from perfect strangers who tell me how cute he is – I mean he is and that is clearly a very unbiased opinion.

But ‘baby’ badges don’t just end with pram pushing. I saw a brilliant meme the other day referring to the fact that new mums may talk of their baby being stinky – I mean they do eject a lot of bodily fluids from almost every orifice but many of us will remember that as a new mum finding times to shower may be tough and I bet we have all ventured out with some unseen baby puke down or back or even some very questionable stains on our jeans that we may not have noticed before leaving the house.

Having recently spent time with a fairly wee one I forgot how these tiny humans can create messes that far outweigh their size.

The poonamie that a new one can create has to be seen to be believed and of course one mess doesn’t stop another one so while trying to sort the first which pretty much spread over whole body – I do not believe they make a nappy that can cope with such an event this little chap chose that precise moment to unleash a wee of immense quantity too!

We all know too that babies are given to being sick – they know no moderation and will feed in a way to rival Roman orgies as in take way too much sick it up then go again. But that too can spread all over the place. The other thing babies do is choose their moments for these tsunami-like events. Usually just as you’ve got them and you ready to go out. Now I can wear a badge of grandmotherly honour in the form of a small stain but being covered in a variety of bodily fluids is a bit too much even for this very proud grandmother. So we change and the whole cycle begins again – such is life!

The Awesomeness of Awe

Its not a word we may use too much theses days but Awe is an important part of life.

The online dictionary defines it as “a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder”

There are all sorts of situations where we might feel awe and they may happen accidentally but increasingly actually searching out situations that leave is filled with awe are thought to be good for our mental health.

Very often those awe-inspiring moments happen by accident we see an amazing sunset or witness a heroic act. But what if we were to seek out moments of awe and wonder.

Nature

Without doubt nature is full of things that inspire awe. We’ve probably all gasped in awe at a wonderful view from a mountain, a wild sea, a beautiful forest or the magic that may be hidden in the depths of the ocean. Perhaps we have marvelled at the serenity of trees that have stood for hundreds of years or the amazing beauty of a dragonfly or butterfly. The colours of exotic birds or the amazing songs they ‘sing’.

Storms are something else that can inspire awe. The power the fact that we have no control over them and although at times obviously they can wreak havoc they can also be things that inspire awe.

Awe can inspire us and remind us in some ways of our smallness – it’s a great way to put things into perspective. So many of our worries can pale into insignificance in the face of the awesomeness of nature. Nature feeds our soul in many different ways so making time to be in nature putting ourselves into positions where we can be inspired by the awesomeness of nature is something we can all do to support our mental health and well-being and give us a more helpful perspective on our lives.

Kindness

One of the other things that can inspire awe is human kindness and heroism. The achievements of others can inspire us whether it is our children performing in a school play after months of practice

or watching a child dote on a small helpless animal. But also we can be inspired by people who put themselves out there to support others whether it is training to run a marathon to raise money for cancer research or going out of your way to support friends and relatives or doing what you would to raise awareness about the environment. Humans can definitely inspire awe in other humans.

Overcoming the odds

Seeing others overcome odds –overcoming cancer, surviving being stuck on a mountain, experiencing life changing injuries and somehow manging to not just survive but adapt and thrive can humble us and leave us filled with awe. We all have our heroes and they are the subject of hundreds of wonderful movies that we have probably all loved.

As humans we can delight in the heroism or overcoming of others. Being inspired by others again helps us to experience awe and inspiration.

Seek out awe

Experiencing moments of awe can improve our mood and leave us feeling more satisfied with our life. There is also a thought that it can be good for our health it can help us be more critical and even reduce materialism. When faced with a magnificent sunset lots of ‘things’ feel less important.

But we also need to be careful to make sure we can be in awe of ourselves. We are pretty amazing humans. We have all overcome odds, we have all kept going through dark times, we have all been kind to others, acted selflessly, protected the more vulnerable done things to support the environment.

So, when seeking awe to inspire us don’t forget to hold up a mirror.

Making time to put yourself in positions where you can experience awe is good for us in all sorts of ways. So try to make time to seek out those aweinspiring moments, walks in the forest watching others triumph enjoying the achievements of those we love – it will do us good.

“Summer suppers don’t get any better than this”

Spring Chicken & Citrus Stew

Ingredients

1 large free-range chicken

Olive oil

6 cloves of garlic

1 large onion

1 bulb of fennel

1 leek

1 handful of asparagus spears

1 handful of fresh peas

1 handful of broad beans

½ a bunch of fresh flat-leaf parsley

½ a bunch of fresh dill

Few sprigs of fresh tarragon

600 ml organic chicken stock

1 large handful of green olives

1 handful of tinned cannellini beans

2 lemons

2 large free-range eggs

2 tablespoons natural yoghurt

Extra virgin olive oil

Parmesan cheese

Method

Joint the chicken into legs, thighs, breasts and wings. Put a large casserole pan over a medium heat and add 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Season the chicken portions and place in the pan. Cook for 10 minutes, until browned on all sides, turning regularly, then remove to a plate.

Meanwhile, prep your veg. Peel and finely chop the garlic and onion. Trim and finely chop the fennel, trim and finely slice the leek and snap the woody ends off the asparagus. Pod the peas and broad beans, then pick the herb leaves and finely chop the stalks.

There should be a few tablespoons of fat left in the pan; if you have more, get rid of most of it. Add the garlic, onion, leek, fennel and herb stalks and cook until softened, stirring occasionally.

Place the chicken back in the pan, pour in the stock and season with black pepper. Cover with a lid, then cook over medium-low for around 45 minutes, or until the chicken is tender and falling off the bone. Bring the mixture back up to a boil, destone and stir in the olives, peas, broad beans and cannellini beans. When the vegetables are done, add most of the herb leaves, reserving some for garnish.

Remove the chicken from the stew and use 2 forks to pull the meat off the bones. Discard the bones, return the meat to the pan, then season to perfection and remove from the heat.

Beat the juice of 2 lemons and the eggs together well, then pour slowly into the stew – don’t let it boil or the egg mixture with scramble – it should just add a gorgeous shine.

Stir in the yoghurt before ladling the stew into bowls. Drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil over each bowl, grate over a little Parmesan and serve sprinkled with the reserved herbs.

“A brilliant transitional dish that takes you from one season to the other”

Black Forest Cheesecake

“Taking 1970’s flavours and bringing it up to modern-day”

Ingredients

90g butter, softened

40g caster sugar

100g plain flour

1½ tbsp cocoa powder

200g double cream

280g full fat cream cheese

100g icing sugar

Juice ½ lemon

1 jar of Opies Black Cherries with Kirsch, syrup reserved

3 sheets of gelatine

100g best quality dark chocolate, melted

100g best quality dark chocolate, peeled to create curls

Method

Pre-heat oven to 180°C /160°C fan/gas 4.

Rub together the butter, sugar, flour and cocoa powder in a bowl or pulse in a food processor until a dough forms. Press the mixture down into the base of the lined cake tin and smooth the surface over with the back of a spoon. Prick with a fork then bake in the oven for 20 minutes until golden. Remove and leave to cool completely in the tin. Beat the cream, cream cheese, icing sugar and lemon juice together in a clean bowl until thickened.

Drain the cherries over a bowl and reserve the syrup as well as half of the cherries. Mix the remaining cherries into the cream cheese, then add to the tin. Smooth the surface over and chill in the fridge.

Meanwhile, place the gelatine leaves in a small bowl of water to soften for around 10 minutes. Add the reserved kirsch syrup to a small saucepan and gently heat for 3-4 minutes.

Remove the gelatine sheets, squeezing out the excess water, then add to the syrup and heat through until completely dissolved, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool completely. Once cooled, pour the syrup over the top of your cheesecake and chill for at least 3 hours but ideally overnight until completely set.

When ready to serve, remove from the fridge and dot with the remaining cherries. Drizzle over the melted chocolate and sprinkle the chocolate peelings on top before serving.

Fry’sFootieCorner

I am writing these notes at the start of July and thankfully it is only a few weeks away from the start of the new season. Although the transfer window has only just technically opened, deals have been done throughout the month of June and speculation was rife at the highest level about a host of Premier League stars including Declan Rice.

Declan and West Ham United enjoyed a fine end to the season with success in Europe and it was probably an ideal time for him to leave his boyhood club – on a high. Clubs have been fighting for his services and you can certainly see why – he is a precocious English talent and he will only get better.

Arsenal have been busy in the transfer market with the arrival of Kai Havertz and whilst there were a few raised eyebrows, I can certainly see where he will fit in because he is a typical Arsenal player, stylish on the ball, times his runs into the box cleverly and can operate in a number of different positions.

Liverpool have also been fairly busy with the arrival of World Cup winner Alexis McCallister from Brighton and Hove Albion. It was a pretty good deal too, less than £40m for a player of his ability and he will help eradicate a problem area for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Closer to me, we have been busy in the transfer market at Peterborough United with three new arrivals at the time of writing. My job has been to try and move some of our players on who are on the transfer list and whilst we have succeeded in some of those, it is hard because clubs continue to struggle financially outside of the top two divisions.

Agents continue to demand the earth and have unrealistic expectations of what their players are worth, but that is football, you have to roll with the punches. I still love the challenge of getting the best deal for my football club. My chairman does not allow players to leave on the cheap, it is about negotiation. Some agents are good agents and some are bad and don’t have the best interests of their player at heart, but you are always going to have to fight for what is right.

I have been in the game a long time, but I still love the buzz, I still love what I do. I still love going to watch games at whatever level and I can’t see that ever changing while I am on this earth!

TRAVEL

Egypt

Ancient Wonders and Modern Luxury at Four Seasons Egypt

A fixture on any serious traveller’s itinerary for centuries thanks to its abundant architectural marvels and important historic sites, Egypt is now a favoured destination for those seeking deep cultural immersion, craving the thrill of adventure, treasure hunting in the markets, thirsting for pan-Arab dining and delighting in Insta-worthy views at every turn.

This summer, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza, Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano and Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh invites travellers to discover – and rediscover – it all.

Well-established in Egypt for more than two decades, Four Seasons can customize the perfect holiday for families, couples and friends in one, two or more Egyptian destinations, completely tailored to individual needs and wants. With insider access, trusted local guides and seamless travel arrangements – not to mention the comfort of luxurious accommodations at the end of each adventurefilled day - all that’s left to do is enjoy every moment.

Top of the list for any visitor to Egypt is the highly anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo. None other than Ramses II (in the form of an 11metre statue carved 32 centuries ago) welcomes visitors to the largest archaeological museum in the world.

From there, the opportunities are endless. Here is a taste of the possibilities and ways to get started on planning an Egyptian adventure this summer.

Cairo: An Ever-Changing City of Secrets

“The Pyramids of Giza are a must of course, and particularly for those who have seen them before, we offer the opportunity to experience their majesty in a new light with a very special private dinner under the stars amid one of the Seven Wonders of the World,” says Yves Giacometti,

Regional Vice President and General Manager, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza. “And to see something that much fewer have seen until now, we suggest the Step Pyramid at Djoser, recently reopened after a 14 yearrestoration and the centre of a tomb complex that is older even than the Pyramids of Giza, by several hundred years.”

To journey even deeper into history, a trip to Luxor and the paradise city of Arwan is a day not soon forgotten. Four Seasons offers a door-to-door experience, including limo transfers and a Four Seasons escort through the airport. Then, after a short flight, Four Seasons guests are met with a carefully chosen guide who will be at their side for the entire day before returning to Cairo that evening or the next day. Often called the world’s greatest open-air museum, treasures are continuing to be discovered.

Those preferring to stay in the city will be spoiled for choice, from the city’s many restored palaces to its performing arts centres, contemporary art galleries (tip: check out the extensive art collection at Four Seasons as an introduction to the city’s burgeoning arts scene), numerous museums and the Cairo Opera House, home to international and local musical performances with first class productions of ballet, opera and symphonic works.

No visit to the city is complete without a trip the Moez area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Khan El Khalili, the 1,000-year-old markets, in search of everything from artisan pieces to funky souvenirs. Then as the sun sets, a leisurely cruise on calm waters of the Nile in a traditional felucca takes you past the evening-lit Cairo Opera House, sparkling Cairo Tower, the celebrated Cairo Yacht Club and several palaces as you sip on Bedouin-style mint tea.

To begin planning exploration of the city and its surroundings, book a getaway by the Nile at the riverside Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza.

Alexandria: The Pearl of the Mediterranean Relatively youthful in comparison to Cairo, Alexandria was founded by, and named for, Alexander the Great in 331 BC. The arrival of the Macedonians in Egypt was just another moment in a long history of cross-cultural influences that can be seen all over the city.

For example, take Pompey’s Pillar, erected to honour the Roman Emperor Diocletian around 300 AD. “Climbing it is forbidden of course, but it’s fun to think about those who did in the past, and the stories of its construction and its role in many periods of history are fascinating,” says Chief Concierge Shaimaa Youssry, Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano.

A visit to the Roman Amphitheatre takes one through the remains of the ancient city of Alexandria during the Roman Period. Then, venture on a tour of where the legendary Pharos Lighthouse once stood - The Citadel Qaitbay. The 15th-century landmark is now a naval museum with lookout towers and a unique collection of weapons.

A must-see landmark is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina; one of the major cultural centres in the world with space for eight million books and a massive main reading room.

Another of the many attractions in Alexandria is the Royal Jewelry Museum, set within an opulent palace built about a century ago. Here, Four Seasons can arrange an expert guide through its magnificent rooms and priceless treasures on display including gold objects and jewellery once worn by the queens and princesses of Egypt’s royal family. For something truly special, Chef Concierge Shaimaa Youssry hints at the possibilities afforded by a private evening tour of the palace, followed by dinner and live music in the Royal Gardens.

Those who want to experience modern day Alexandria at its best will enjoy an evening at the beautiful Alexandria Opera House.

To begin planning the perfect seaside vacation, book a Mediterranean getaway at the beachfront Four Seasons Hotel Alexandria at San Stefano.

Sharm El Sheikh: An Oasis for Adventurers

For those who shun darkened museums, busy markets and crowded tourist sites, Egypt’s Peninsula is a vast wilderness for adventurers on land and underwater. The Red Sea waters surrounding the southern tip of the peninsula are teeming with marine life and intriguing shipwrecks, making it popular with divers and snorkelers of all levels. First stop: the new dive centre at Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh, where training and first glimpses of colourful aquatic life can be seen in the Resort’s private reef. From there, escorted trips and yacht charters to the area’s 76 recognised dive sites await. “Try night diving too,” says Leo Baum, the Resort’s General Manager. “On a moonlit night you can see as far as 10 metres or 32 feet deep and witnessing the glittering bioluminescence of tiny particles of glowing plankton is something you’ll never forget. Beyond diving and the dramatic reefs, guests will enjoy water activities on a sea kayak and stand-up paddle boarding.”

Recently expanded to double its original size, Four Seasons now offers numerous pools, 12 diverse culinary experiences, a new spa fitness centre with floor-to-ceiling windows, tennis and squash courts – but for those who want to expand their horizons, there’s as much to do in the desert as at the beach. Quad biking the dunes, a sunset camel safari, or a Bedouin-style dinner under the stars are all easily arranged, and the region’s historic sites are worth a look too.

For a look at modern Sharm El Sheikh, a visit to the Heavenly Cathedral with its elaborately painted ceiling, stained galls windows and Biblical illustrations will have cameras snapping, as will the glorious Al Sahaba Mosque with its striking minarets – both were built in the 21st century, with the latter being close to the Old Market for souvenirs, spices and local handicrafts.

To begin planning the adventure – or simply a few days of sun-soaked relaxation – book a Red Sea getaway at Four Seasons Resort Sharm El Sheikh.
