Learning to

Deal with your ’Parking’ Problems

june018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 04/06/2018 21:26 Page 11

NO this is not about cars at all, I’m using the term parking to mean all those things we either need to do or want to do but somehow we ‘park’ them to do at another time.

We all do it and while there is nothing wrong with it as such, in fact sometimes it is essential, it can become such a way of life. That it stops us either enjoying the here and now OR not living the lives we want. When ’parking’ things becomes a way of life it can cause two types of problems so let’s look at those and then look at ways of doing things differently.

Not doing the things that need to be done. We all have things we need to do that we don’t like, whether its things like doing the accounts, or paying bills, clearing out the wardrobe or doing the garden, catching up on emails or replying to letters. Of course out of the whole long list of things we need to do to keep life running smoothly the ones we ‘park’ are usually the ones we don’t like. We often consciously park them telling ourselves we’ll do them later but somehow we never quite find the time. You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today. Abraham Lincoln

There are two consequences to this, the first is that things don’t always remain static so parking some of them means that they can cause more problems, not paying things on time or leaving the garden till it’s a jungle for example. So by parking them they become even worse so you put them off longer, and then they get worse and before you know where you are you end up in a downward spiral. The other consequence is that while you might have parked them you do still actually know you have to do them and that can cause a background level of stress that keeps on increasing.

Tips to Try Consider the things you definitely park every time - then ask yourself why? Is it that you just don’t like it? Or is it that you don’t like it because it’s not something you feel you can do. It is worth thinking about getting help with some things, maybe paying for an accountant or asking someone to help with the gardening.

Instead of telling yourself you don’t have time try thinking about times when you DO have a few minutes to spare or check you diary for times you could have time and schedule some time to do those things. Arrange to do those things you hate and actually diary them

in. View it like an appointment and then maybe give yourself a treat afterwards.

If you feel tempted to park it again remind yourself that those background stresses of things not done, which are usually subconscious can detract from other things you are doing, and are a bit like a weight you carry around.

Not doing things you want to do This is slightly different but if you want to do something whether it is something small like reading a particular book or catching up with a friend or something bigger like taking a course or learning a particular skill, not doing those things will still have consequences.

Over time it can cause immense frustration that you aren’t actually doing the things you want to and it might also be that you start to feel resentful that what you want to do is not actually getting done. The other consequence is that time is passing and not doing some of the things you want might mean you don’t feel fulfilled and possibly aren’t living to your full potential or being as happy as you might be.

Tips to try In many ways there will never be a right time or a time when you have lots of ‘free’ time. So really you need to decide what is important. Sometimes it is worth writing down a few things that you want to do and give yourself a time scale. Instead of thinking you want to travel the world pick one place and actually book to visit it. If you can’t afford it think about either ways of doing it cheaply or ways to save money to spend on this if it is something you really want. Maybe add up what you spend of coffees or lunches in a week and change how you choose to spend what might be scarce financial resources.

If you are worried that doing some of the things you want to do will upset others that needs addressing. While I am not advocating becoming a selfish person who never considers the needs of others it is still important to acknowledge that we all only have one life and it is up to us to make the choices that will allow us to be happy. Many people consider others far too much but it is important to acknowledge that our own needs and wishes are important as well. Try asking yourself the question ‘if not now, when?’ For more information on this or any other aspect of living the life you want contact www.attunededucation.com or email info@attunededucation.com or call Sheila on 07921193479

Are you a Narcissist?

june018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 04/06/2018 21:26 Page 15

We can be super quick to label others with names, but how often do we step back and examine our own behaviour? There are countless examples of people who are frequently labelled as narcissists in our society such as Donald Trump, the controversial president of the USA. But what if you turned the light on yourself? How easily would you label yourself as a narcissist? Top Life Coach Carole Ann Rice has made things easier with a list of 5 signs that you may be a narcissist:

1. NO SELF AWARENESS – if you’ve been told you’re unaware of yourself before, chances are you’re a narcissist. Being genuinely bewildered as to why people don’t want to hang out with you and don’t return your calls, means you should look at yourself from a different point of view.

2. I’M THE BEST – there’s no shame in being proud of your accomplishments. But if you love everything you do and believe everything you say is correct over others’ views, you have a problem. Being number one in your own fan club doesn’t count – other people have to like and respect you too

3. I’M A STAR – assuming that everyone cares is a huge mistake. In reality, most people don’t care about who you are and what you’ve done unless they have a reason to. If you can’t tell by the unenthused looks on people’s faces while you’re boring them with your stories, people aren’t always interested. If you assume absolutely everybody is fascinated by you and everyone you meet is your willing audience, you’re a narcissist.

4. IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU – newsflash: other people exist! Talking about yourself all the time is not only boring for others, but it makes you seem like the most conceited person in the room. A good conversation is a two-way street. You can’t always have the attention shining on you and have the focus on how amazing you think you are. Starting every sentence with ‘I’ is terrible and a sure sign that you have narcissistic tendencies. 5. CHANGING THE SUBJECT – we’ve all dealt with that person who brings themselves back into the conversation, even if it has nothing to do with them. It’s incredibly frustrating and makes you want to avoid them at all future social occasions. If you always have to bring the attention back to you, you’re a narcissist. Nobody cares that you think John’s holiday wasn’t as much fun as the one you had in 2003. You’re just not relevant to the conversation. www.realcoachingco.com

Midlife Madness Help I need a Face Change Generally speaking apart from an ever increasing array of wrinkles, which I am attempting to accept with good grace, numerous anti-aging products and regular facials (it is an expensive business this getting older) I have always been fairly happy with my face. It has the necessary components which still functions (eyes and ears deteriorating a bit but only within realms of normal) and whilst never a beauty queen (my feminist principles would have prevented it anyway so no great loss) I always felt I scrubbed up ok.

Which I guess in part at least is thanks to my genes so therefore to my parents. But recently I have realised I have various other features possibly inherited, that seem to attract certain kinds of attention. I guess we all have these, my husband will almost always be stopped at customs it’s either the ‘guilty’ look - or the fact that his slightly ageing but still drop dead gorgeous looks (yes he might read this) have a touch of bohemian hippy about them so clearly up to no good. My eldest will always be the one in bother even if he hasn’t done it - which often he hasn’t he just seems to have the wrong place wrong time gene and one of the younger ones has a ‘late’ gene - not that he is late just that everything he waits for is late, his will always be the last meal at the restaurant, arriving when the rest of us are ready for pudding, his flight will be the one delayed or the motorway he is driving on will be guaranteed to have a hold up - it’s like he attracts lateness. Me, I seem to have a ‘whatever your problem, I’m sure I can help look’ or possibly a ‘this way if you need a good rant or unburdening session’! Now generally speaking that isn’t so much of a problem unless you are unable to leave the situation, which is what always seems to happen as I find myself stuck next to such

folk on trains or planes or waiting for trains or planes or in some other hard to escape from scenario.

Trust me it can be serious, I’m not talking rants about services I am talking serious unburdening - I once spent an entire flight to the Caribbean listening to the incredibly sad unburdening’s of a man who was returning to the island for the funeral of his son-in-law who had been shot. On another occasion I waited in a queues at a fish and chip van - yes it was lengthy but the poor lady in front told me the tragic tale of her sisters disappearance 40 years ago when they were on holiday, I only wanted 2 portions of haddock and chips!

Recently on the train I have sat next to the following poor unfortunate souls who have hopefully all benefitted from an unburdening, an older gentleman who was in the country as his son had experienced a house fire, a lady who had just seen her husband’s business of 20 years go under following non-payment from some really quite high profile customers, another man travelling back from a tribunal for unfair dismissal and a host of people of various ages and backgrounds who have told me sometimes in glorious (but completely unnecessary) technicolour the distress and disaster of their various heartbreaks. But why I ask myself, why me? It is not that I am unsympathetic, in fact quite the opposite I am very sympathetic - so much so I often end up crying with them. It’s just not what I bargain for when I am jetting off on a holiday waiting for fish and chips or travelling to and from work. Clearly I give off some ‘I’m here to help aura and quite simply it has got to stop! Sunglasses, over ear headphones and an air of ‘beware’ might be the only things to save me form a face change!.

Beauty Secrets Fiona Quinn, owner of Dollyblue Beauty and Advanced Skincare, is a Beauty Therapist, Educator and Obsessed Skincare Nerd and is joinging us here at Affinity to share all her latest beauty industry tips, products and updates.

I love all things Beauty and spend a lot (actually, more than a lot) of my time and money researching what’s new, what’s hot, what works and what doesn’t work in the Beauty industry. Keep reading for tips and celebrity secrets to get glowing and reveal your beauty within. Its June and that can mean only one thing, Summer is on its way so now’s the time to bring some changes to your skincare routine and try out some amazing new treatments that will not only make you feel great but show significant improvement in your skin.

Two of my favourite treatments that you should definitely try now are… GET YOUR GLOW WITH CHEMICAL PEELS This time of year, it’s a given that we need to promote

healthy cell regeneration. I love to recommend chemical peels, as they will improve and rejuvenate the skin, brighten the complexion, clear congested skin and minimise the signs of wrinkles to reveal a more youthful, softer and smoother looking appearance. My most frequently asked question during a skincare peel consultation is ‘Will I look like Samantha from Sex in the City if I get a chemical peel?’

The answer is definitely NO. Clients sometimes expect to peel throughout the complete treated area, but post treatment peeling is often similar to peeling after a tan. In some cases, exfoliation occurs on a cellular level and is not apparent to the naked eye. The exfoliation a client experiences varies depending on the peel strength and individual skin profile. Celebrity fans include Courtney Cox, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Aniston so it’s no wonder AlumierMD peels are my busiest treatment in the salon at the moment as is my 2nd favourite treatment.

LIGHT THE WAY WITH LED LIGHT THERAPY The light therapy LED illuminating face mask treatment has quite literally set the beauty industry alight (please excuse the pun). Celebrity’s such as Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry have been quick to embrace this technology which is non-invasive and completely safe.

LED light will activate the skins photoreceptors and allows the skin cells to absorb its energy treating skin issues from the inside out. It works in the deep layers of the skin to inhibit bacteria formation, stimulate collagen and reduce inflammation. Although you may look like a Star Wars Storm Trooper during treatment the results are fabulous glowing skin. (hey, I didn’t say it was going to be easy).

Dollyblue Beauty offers a truly bespoke treatment to address the unique concerns of your skin. So this season make the changes, try something new, and make you a priority. www.dollybluebeauty.co.uk

Jumpstart your Day Whether you work a traditional 9 to 5 or need to be up-and-running with the sun, one thing is for sure--life gets easier with a routine.

If you struggle with finding the focus and energy to face a busy day, millennial entrepreneur, business coach, and vogue influencer Ariana Pierce has a few morning routine must-haves that will get you excited to roll out of bed. 5 Tips for Jumpstarting Your Day

Take Time to Be -- Instead of heading straight from your bed to your desk, give yourself permission to sip coffee, do some yoga, or journal. Visualize -- Meditate or journal on one thing you want from your day, and then think

about all the ways you can make it happen.

Look Good to Feel Good -- Wear clothes that are flattering and comfortable to move in. You’ll have greater confidence! Eat Right -- Have a healthy breakfast that will satisfy and sustain you.

Start Small -- Finally, ease yourself into your day. See how many things you can post or comment in just 15 minutes on your personal or business social media and then call it quits.

To learn more about Ariana Pierce’s techniques for inspiring entrepreneurs or about her current public speaking engagement on the Entrepreneur’s Prosperity Tour, contact Leah@chicexecs.com.

A Taste of Summer Nothing beats an ice-cold G&T on an unusually warm spring evening, especially when it’s accompanied by delicious food and great company.

We had headed out for the evening to try the new menu at The Swan at Salford (on the outskirts of Milton Keynes), set within the idyllic village of Salford, reminiscent of times gone by. The Swan is full of character and warm hospitality making it the perfect place to enjoy a drink or something to eat with family or friends.

The décor is traditional, with a slightly modern edge, wooden floors, spring green hues and lots of hidden corners all add to the relaxing atmosphere you feel as soon

as you walk through the door.

Seated in a cosy corner we relaxed with our G&T’s and whetted our appetites with warm bread and olives whilst pursuing a menu full of fresh ingredients and tasty dishes.

We began with warm crispy Camembert topped with tomato chutney and rocket, a simple dish but none the less delicious, with the chutney adding a slight tang to the creamy smooth cheese. A salad of carrot, buckwheat, pomegranate, chickpea and toasted seeds, dressed with a harissa dressing, was just delightful, full of fresh flavours, different textures and a real mouth-watering treat.

We’d visited on steak night so it seemed sacrilege if we didn’t indulge in a steak or two – It’s always a mark of a good restaurant as to whether they can cook a steak exactly as you request, I have to say The Swan came out top at this. A 28-day dry-aged 8oz sirloin steak was requested well done (sorry to any chefs reading this) and it came out exactly that, cooked to perfection, still tender and full of flavour, with spring greens to accompany, this made a truly appetising dish. Hubbie’s was just as perfectly cooked, rare – medium, with an added side of King Prawns in garlic butter – the amalgamation of tastes from the fresh fish and juicy steak was a real delight on the palette. As expected there is an impressive wine list with bottles starting from just £18.50 – The Swan also recommends a wine of the month by leaving a little description tied round a bottle on your table, a nice quirky touch that is sure to tempt you.

After a small break, I was still too full for dessert, but hubbie had no such problem and indulged in the lemon parfait, black sesame meringue and lime curd, very similar to a lemon meringue pie, except the pieces came individually, the sesame in the meringue a great twist and the parfait citrusy, smooth and light.

Coffees followed and once cleared we decided to finish our evening with a cocktail at the bar. The Swan has a great choice of cocktails and mocktails along with well-trained bartenders who know how to mix just right. All of the dishes we tasted were abundant with colour and excellent in presentation. It’s easy to see why once you’ve visited The Swan you’re already planning your return, even if it’s just for cocktails. To make a reservation www.swansalford.co.uk

Peach, Sizzled Halloumi and Quinoa Salad “This flavour-packed healthy salad is delicious, and great for serving at a summer BBQ”

Ingredients 75g red, black & white quinoa (or just use one colour) 1tsp vegetable stock powder 2 South African peaches or nectarines, pitted and sliced 50g spinach and watercress salad 20g whole almonds, toasted 120g Halloumi cheese, sliced 40g pomegranate seeds Dressing 2tbsp olive oil 1tbsp lemon juice 1tsp Dijon mustard 1tsp clear honey Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method Rinse the quinoa in a sieve, then cook it in simmering water with the stock powder for 15 minutes, until tender. Drain well and cool for a few minutes. Combine the warm quinoa with the South African peaches or nectarines and the spinach and watercress. Share between 4 plates and scatter the almonds on top. Heat a large non-stick frying pan and dry-fry the slices of Halloumi for 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Share them between the salads. To make the dressing, put the olive oil, lemon juice, mustard and honey into a small saucepan and warm over a low heat, whisking together to combine. Season with a little salt and pepper, then drizzle the dressing over the salads. Serve, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds. Cook’s tip: Try using walnut oil in the dressing instead of olive oil. Panna Cotta Pie With Summer Berries Ingredients

275g plain flour 50g icing sugar ½ tsp Salt 100g cold Butter 1 small egg

Egg wash 1 whipped egg white 1 tsp double cream or milk

Filling 4½ Gelatin sheets (or 1 rounded tbsp powdered gelatin) 1 –2 vanilla beans 750ml whipping cream 150g granulated sugar 400g in season berries

Method

Combine all the dry ingredients for the pie dough in a bowl or food processor. Cut the butter into cubes and work them into the dry ingredients to form a crumbly mixture. Add the egg and work it in quickly to form a dough. Roll out the dough into a circle (slightly less than -inch thick) on a sheet of parchment paper with a little flour, then roll up the paper into a roll and let it chill in the fridge for 20 minutes. Cover a 9-inch springform pan with the pie dough. Prick the bottom and let the pie dough rest in the fridge for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7.

Bake the pie shell in the middle of the oven for 12–15 minutes or until it begins to get some colour. Mix the egg white and cream for the egg wash and immediately brush the warm bottom of the pie crust with the mixture. This seals the tiny holes in the bottom of the crust so that the filling doesn’t leak out. Let the pie shell cool. Place the gelatin sheets for the filling in cold water and let them soak for 10 minutes. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise and scrape out the seeds. Place the seeds and the scraped beans in a pot together with the cream and sugar and bring to a boil. Remove the pot from the heat and transfer the gelatin sheets to the pot. Stir the mixture with a spoon and let it rest for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

“An Officer and a Gentleman” is one of the highest grossing films of all time. The screenplay is by writer and director Douglas Day Stewart which was based on his personal experience as a Naval Officer Candidate. We caught up with Douglas Day Stewart to find out more about his inspiration.

What was your original inspiration when writing An Officer and a Gentleman? I had essentially lived the story. I was required to serve in the military during the Vietnam War era and had a choice of being a soldier or a naval officer. I went to Officer Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island in 1962. I had a really tough drill instructor, and I dated a girl from the factories. So in later life when I was looking for rich subject matter for writing, I wanted to revisit my time in the military. So is the character of Zack very similar to you? To start with he was, but as I began writing the story I

spoke to a friend of mind, a fellow writer and a guy with more life experience than me. He told me “nobody’s ever really dealt with the fact that the military is this melting pot for people of all background and classes” so I decided to do something more rough edge. So I took the character that was based on me and I began to rough him up. I put him on a motorcycle, I gave him tattoos and martial arts skills and that became Zack Mayo. Did you know the film would be a success before it was released? It’s only looking back now that everyone has this misconception that the movie was coming out of this big Hollywood machine and was destined to be a hit, but that wasn’t it at all. It was a hard sell! I had recently done The Boy In The Plastic Bubble which was a big hit TV movie and The Blue Lagoon which had been well received so I dared to hope An Officer and a Gentleman would be the third in a string of successes, but I wasn’t sure how anyone would respond to it, particularly as it is so military focused.

june018.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 04/06/2018 21:31 Page 53

What made you want to return to An Officer and a Gentleman and turn it into a musical production? I think it was always my hope to do this with the film. I’ve always loved musicals since I was a little boy and saw West Side Story with my father. I mean, who doesn’t love musical theatre? I kept thinking this was a wonderful story for musical theatre, it has elements of a real Cinderella love story. A working class love story that is so simple and uplifting, what better kind of tale to tell on stage?

What has the process been like? I have been working at trying to realise a stage musical of this film for fifteen years and I’m finally seeing it in the form I feel it is supposed to be in. An Officer and a Gentleman is a very small, personal story and for me very autobiographical and real. It didn’t need to be puffed up in any way; it doesn’t necessarily need all the bells and whistles to work. When I was first introduced to the director, Nikolai Foster, a couple of years ago we both started talking about our love for theatre and our shared feeling that this story should be told in a kind of very real way. That’s the journey that has brought us to this point of embarking on a tour of the UK. Was it tempting to change or update the story during this process? I think this is a story very much rooted in its time and genre. It’s important to remember this is a love story set in the innocence of the early 80s. In all reality it probably couldn’t be the same story today as we live in a different time. There are a lot of issues around that we weren’t necessarily aware of in 1982. Why do you think audiences still love An Officer and a Gentleman, more than thirty years after its release? I think what they hold on to is the working class dream. The idea that if you believe and work hard enough, that American promise that we hope is still valid. People want to believe that human beings can be transformed, and can transform themselves into winners. You see the excitement of the audiences when Zack comes into the factory at the

end, and that excitement is still there now. I remember sitting next to a guy at an early screening and him saying, “I wish somebody would pick me up and carry me away!”

The score of the stage show is full of well known 1980s hit songs. What do you think adding that musical element adds to the plot and the characters? I think it focuses everything in a time and place. Those are such great songs, and we use some really emotive and powerful songs from that era. It feels to me that this is what the story really wanted, to use songs from the era rather than original music. This is a simple, Cinderella love story that people have embraced for decades and I hope that now young people will enjoy discovering this great story through the musical and these great songs of the 80s are so well loved and are hits for a reason.

The original movie has some very iconic scenes; can audiences expect to see their favourite moments on stage? Yes, absolutely! It was very important to Nikolai and I throughout this whole process that the original idea be respected. This production is the movie but taken into a whole new dimension through music. I love the way the music takes a moment and makes it transcend anything written in prose. The emotions of the movie are really powerful but just you wait and see what happens when you add music! What can audiences expect, and why should they come and see the show? I think that more so even than the early 80s we are living in a very difficult time and I believe that audiences are going to find that all those things they loved and dreamed about when they were young are still there, and they’re going to discover their hearts can be opened again and opened just as wide as they could dream when watching this production. An Officer and a Gentleman runs from Monday 9th – Saturday 14th July at Milton Keynes Theatre. Tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com

Right Here’ in Bedford Park T

he Triple Brit Award nominee and platinum selling artist Jess Glynne will be headlineing ‘Right Here’ in Bedford Park this summer on Saturday 4th August.

which has graced The Hollywood Bowl (twice), rocked 30,000 party people in Hyde Park in Central London and headlined both the Main Stage & The Other Stage (twice) at Glastonbury.

Her chart-topping debut album, I Cry When I Laugh – which includes the singles Right Here, Hold My Hand, Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself and Take Me Home – turned double platinum in the UK, making it the biggest selling debut album of 2015. Jess is also one of only two British female solo artists to have five consecutive UK number one singles. 2016 was a further massive year for Jess, with a sold-out UK arena tour under her belt plus she was nominated for British Breakthrough Act, British Female Solo Artist and British Single for ‘Hold My Hand’ at the prestigious Brit Awards. More recently she teamed up with Tinie Tempah on the smash hit single ‘Not Letting Go’.

Basement Jaxx are double BRIT award winners (Best Dance Act), received a Grammy for their third album “Kish Kash” and continue to produce quality releases on their own label, Atlantic Jaxx Recordings. 2018 will see them working on music for a TV show for ITV, producing (and co-writing with) new artists whilst DJing around the world, including an Ibiza residency for Glitterbox at Hi Ibiza.

Jess Glynne first came into the public prominence in 2014 as the vocalist on Clean Bandit’s Grammy Award winning and #1 hit ‘Rather Be’; Glynne scored another number one earlier that same year on Route 94’s ‘My Love’. Pop sensation Jess Glynne has since become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years.

Since then Jess has been touring in sold out shows all over the world and is currently back in the charts featuring on Rudimental’s new single ‘These Days’, which has become her latest chart hit single triumph. Glynne’s success is down to her unique ability to turn stories of heartbreak into big, bold crowd-pleasers – be they piano-backed ballads or synth-heavy house anthems. She has credits greats such as Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Mariah and Whitney as providing her inspiration.

Basement Jaxx Supporting Jess is Basement Jaxx - Since starting life as underground producers and party promoters in 1995, putting out their first tracks on shrink wrapped vinyl and throwing hush-hush raves in abandoned South London pizza joints, Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton, collectively known as Basement Jaxx, have taken the sound of London, SW9 to the world. With album sales of more than 3 million under their belt including their legendary debut album “Remedy” and 2005’s double platinum UK No.1 collection “The Singles”, Basement Jaxx have also developed into a remarkable live act –an all-out sensory assault featuring live musicians, an army of singers and dazzling visuals

Alongside this, the Jaxx have consistently explored other musical avenues including a (then) unique album collaboration with the Netherland’s Metropole Orkest (“Basement Jaxx Vs. Metropole Orkest”) which had it’s UK live debut at the Barbican in London in 2011; the first Basement Jaxx movie score, for Joe Cornish’s “Attack The Block”; and 2014’s collaborative song project, “Power To The People”.

Every element of this hotel from the bespoke furniture to the restaurant menus, has been personally planned and designed by Giorgio Armani himself, ensuring practicality and luxury throughout.

Greeted by our own lifestyle manager, we are whisked off past the designer’s signature white rose displays into the elevator to our Fountain View Suite on the eighth floor. With floor-to-ceiling windows offering unrivalled views over the spectacular fountains, a colour palette of taupe, dark brown and neutrals throughout, Armani plush pile rugs and lamps in creams and greys, this suite was sophisticated luxury at its best. No detail was left to chance, everything right down to the sugar cubes monogrammed with an A.

High shine, dark wood tiles dominated the bathroom, with a separate shower and bathtub and his and her sinks built into even

Technology in the suite is in abundance with an iPad controlling everything from the 40-inch flat-screen TV, opening and closing the blinds and curtains, unlocking the door, and if you need a little help with anything just contact your lifestyle manager, who’ll look after you throughout your stay.

Whether you’re a hotel guest or not a visit to the ARMANI/SPA is a must, even if it’s just to lie by the outdoor pool, the design manages to conform to and reflect the leaf-like curves of the Burj Khalifa effortlessly, and the corner where it is housed is the perfect sun trap. The hotel has seven restaurants offering lots of different dining options ranging from European to Japanese and it was here in the Japanese restaurant ARMANI/HASHI, that we enjoyed one of the freshest, innovative meals we’ve experienced todate, made even more memorable by our alfresco dining spot – a table for two outside on the terrace overlooking the iconic Dubai fountain – delicious dishes with wow views, we couldn’t ask for anything more.

ARMANI/HASHI delivers an imaginative twist on traditional and contemporary Japanese cuisine, and with the passion and enthusiasm of eccentric Head Chef Jimmy, from Japan, it is obvious we are in for a real culinary delight.

There was no ordering off the menu, we were leaving it to Jimmy to create some of his favourite dishes for us – from the Sashimi platter – five varieties and 15 pieces of sashimi – salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallop and seabass to the finest beef with foie gras, lamb chops and Miso Chilean seabass with Japanese plum, it is evident that the ingredients here couldn’t get any fresher, (the fish is flown in daily from around the world) - by the way did I mention the signature Wagyu tataki, served with nameko mushrooms and truffle soy – Every dish has an amalgamation of flavours and textures that literally melt in the mouth – the whole dining experience made even more special by the mesmerising fountains dancing every half hour. No trip to Armani Hotel would be complete without a trip to The Dubai Mall, accessed from a private lift that takes guests straight from the lobby into the mall. With more than 1000 luxury designer shops, an Olympic sized icerink, aquarium, cinema and waterfall – you need at least a day to get around it all. If you want to head higher up the Burj Khalifa, then why not relax and enjoy a cocktail or two in the Atmosphere Lounge, a fantastic way to watch the sunset. Located on the 122nd floor it can again be accessed via a private lift from the hotel lobby and as you can imagine offers the most spectacular views of the entire city.

An impressive breakfast buffet, literally fit for a king is served in the Armani/Mediterraneo restaurant, with dishes from across the region including pastries, sushi, cheese, meats, hummus, haloumi, and fruits. Hot Arabian dishes as well as cool refreshing salads, it’s more like a lunch than a breakfast, certainly perfect for setting you up for another day drooling over everything designer in The Mall. There are 160 rooms in total, all offering true Italian luxury, and the personal touch of Giorgio Armani, it is the perfect place for a stay of pure indulgence, whether it’s cuisine, pampering, shopping or simply relaxing the Armani Hotel has it all and more.
