Learning to be
The Boss

I love the way that children can come out with words of wisdom and just the other day when walking through a wood with my grandson, he announced that the only thing we can really be boss of is ourselves! Very true, whatever might happen the only thing we can really control are our own responses. Our thoughts, our words, our actions and while we can’t always control our feelings, we can decide what we do with them. That got me thinking about the qualities of a good boss, it doesn’t matter that the only person we may be boss of is ourselves, in many ways that is the most important ‘boss’ role we will ever have because it impacts our own life. So, I’ve listed below some of the characteristics of a good leader or ‘boss’ and we can apply these to our own lives.
Vision Any leader will usually have a plan. This might be one of their own design or they may be fulfilling someone else’s plan, but an overall vision is important otherwise activity will be random and lack any sense of clear purpose. That usually means that little or no progress is made – after all you must have some vision to work towards to add any kind of meaning to what you do.
Daily goals, acts or action The tricky bit for someone who is a leader or boss of other people is communicating their vision to the people they may be leading. The luxury we have when it comes to us being boss within our own lives is that we don’t actually need to communicate that to anyone else – but we do need to make sure that we stay in touch with our own vision and one of the ways we can do that effectively is to break it down into goals so we actually take steps to move forward. In management terms this is where bosses set targets, and these may be related to appraisals or bonuses. Incentives for good performance or reaching targets are often offered. Hopefully as individuals we won’t need to do this as the rewards are more intrinsic – it is us pursuing our own goals but giving ourselves shorter term tasks to accomplish can be very motivating. Accountability Another important feature of leadership is holding people to account. Perhaps a bit tricky when it is us. Either we can be ‘soft’ with ourselves and allow a lot of drift which often leaders wouldn’t allow. The consequence is that we won’t make any progress toward our goals. The other problem is that we can end up beating ourselves up and that can also incapacitate us and prevent any move forward. A wise leader would hold people to account but also give encouragement making sure they shared the
vision, had clear expectations, and had the skills they needed. But they would also be held accountable.
Tracks Progress One of the things that can offer great encouragement is tracking progress and seeing how far you have come. It’s usually the responsibility of a boss – but it is something we can often forget to do for ourselves. So, it is important to build in times when we reflect, look back and see how far we’ve come. This is always easier when we have given ourselves really clear goals and specific things to achieve so we can tell that we are moving forward. Values people If you have ever worked for a boss that you would define as ‘good’, the chances are they will have been someone who values people. Leaders who get the best from people are usually those who care, who notice and remember things about people, and they treat people with respect. So, when it comes to being your own boss in the sense of acknowledging that you are in control of YOU and what you think and do, this translates to demonstrating self-respect and self-care. You might not get everything right, you might make mistakes, but a good boss would still value people even while holding them to account. That means we should do the same. Giving ourselves a hard time is rarely effective and can rob us of confidence and motivation.
Enjoy what you do While it can’t be denied that some aspects of any job might be a bit mundane, a good boss can engender a bit of fun, they may organise treats or provide things that make people feel valued and enjoy what they do. Life is meant to be enjoyable. If you do not enjoy life then it is definitely time to start taking a long hard look at the different components of your life and ask what needs to change so you can start to live life to the full and enjoy as many aspects of your life as possible. For some people reading this, maybe now is the time to start being a boss and take charge of your own life. It is the only one you’ll have and for most of us change happens when we make it – we can sit back and wait but while we do that life may drift by without us dong the things we want – so go on be a boss! Finding it tricky to resist that Mcdonalds burger, or that extra packet of crisps? New research from the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital of McGill University, found that our hunger response is due to a hormone found in the stomach that makes some of us more vulnerable to tasty food smells, encouraging overeating and obesity. The hormone, known as ghrelin, was found to control the extent to which the brain associates reward with food odours. Ultimately, the research suggests a genetically based hypersensitivity to food-associated images and smells. Dr. Sarah Brewer, working in association with the Type-2 Diabetes supplement, CuraLin (www.curalife.co), shares her thoughts on the study:
Ghrelin is a hormone produced by cells in the lining of your stomach when it’s empty. Ghrelin directly stimulates your appetite centre in the brain to trigger hunger and food cravings that encourage you to overeat.
New research helps to explain how ghrelin makes the sight and smell of food hard to resist. Ghrelin is known to interact with dopamine, a brain chemical involved in reward responses and making you feel good. It now seems that ghrelin controls the extent to which the brain associates reward with food odours and increases the pleasure associated with food images. People who are struggling to lose weight often have an increased sensitivity to food-associated images and smells that cause them to eat. Infusing ghrelin into the circulation of volunteers can increase their amount of food they eat by as much as 28%. Once you start to eat, your ghrelin levels start to fall. This fall in ghrelin levels is linked with increasing levels of insulin, and it was recently recognised that ghrelin may help to control glucose metabolism and play a role in the development of type 2 diabetes.
Researchers hope to find a way of blocking unwanted ghrelin responses to reduce food cravings to make it easier to stick to a weight loss diet, and to improve glucose control. Dr Sarah Brewer, working in association with the Type-2 Diabetes supplement, CuraLin (www.curalife.co) reveals 10 top tips in combating cravings (even if they do smell scrumptious!): Practice Yoga - People who regularly practice yoga are more attune to their appetite and are better able to judge when they are full.
Eat Mindfully - Don’t eat while doing something
else such as reading or watching TV. Instead, focus on all aspects of the experience and chew food thoroughly – some suggest twenty to thirty chews per mouthful. Slow eating gives your brain time to respond to falling levels of ghrelin and other triggers that indicate you are full. As soon as you feel full, stop eating.
Don’t Remove the Evidence - When giving in to a craving, leave sweet wrappers, crisps bags, empty biscuit tin or donut crumbs on the table in front of you. Psychologists have found that when you are confronted with the proof of your indulgence you will eat less overall. Keep a Food Diary - Explore why you eat using a food diary. Ask yourself “How Hungry am I’” and record your emotions before, during and after eating. This helps to focus your awareness on your eating habits.
Exercise - Cravings can often be overcome by brisk exercise, which releases the brain’s own opium like chemicals (endorphins, enkephalins) to help you feel good and suppress cravings. A walk will also help to burn off some additional calories as part of a weight loss regime. Try Aromatherapy - Inhaling the scent of banana, green apple or peppermint essential oils can reduce food cravings so you eat less overall. Inhaling the aroma of vanilla can help you overcome cravings for chocolate.
Try Acupuncture - Auricular acupressure, which stimulates points on the ear, can help to curb cravings. Appetite suppression points on the tragus – the small pointed part of the ear in front of the ear canal – are believed to slow stomach emptying, increase feelings of fullness and lessen hunger.
Try Ayurvedic Herbs - If you have type 2 diabetes, that’s being managed on diet and lifestyle, a blend of Ayurvedic herbs is traditionally used to reduce food cravings and improve glucose control, such as CuraLin (£59.00, curalife.co), however if you are already taking a prescribed medicine to treat type 2 diabetes, it is important to check with your doctor first. Find Healthy Alternatives - When you crave something sweet, eat sweet fruit (berries, nectarines, cherries, bananas etc) or a handful of dried fruits instead of confectionary. If craving chocolate select antioxidant-rich dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa solids, not milk or white chocolate. Clean your Teeth - If all else fails, clean your teeth with a strong peppermint flavoured toothpaste – this helps stimulate your taste buds and is highly effective for reducing cravings.

Midlife Madness As I get older, I am forced to acknowledge that I am, like many before me becoming a little more difficult to live with! Not as difficult as some I could list but more difficult than I used to be, and I know from talking to other folk that this is recognised by many (not the bit about me being more difficult but people generally getting more difficult with age). So, I thought it would be helpful for many folks to know what they are up against with friends and relatives who are rocketing towards (or gleefully using) their bus passes, pensions and other agerelated privileges.
I like what I like the way I like it Having been on the earth for a while now, you can be assured, I know what I like. If I ask for something specific, I want that specifically, like lime instead of lemon or a china teacup instead of a mug. Don’t bother arguing and for heaven’s sake don’t assume I won’t notice the difference because I most definitely will. If you are a service provider, I’m afraid I expect you to take my wishes into account and do your utmost to accommodate them – after all I am the paying customer. While we are talking of service providers, like restaurants I completely fail to understand why things are on the menu if you can’t provide them. If it is a seasonal delicacy then just put it in the menu in that season, if it is something very special maybe lobster, I can see that if demand is excessive it could run out but for most dishes let’s be honest that shouldn’t be the case, so if it’s on the menu make a commitment to ensuring you can provide it.
My tolerance bucket is empty I’m not sure if we are born with a certain amount or whether it is somehow topped up (if you know of a good tolerance top up please feel free to let me know) but what I can tell you is that mine is running perilously low! I am a walking tolerance drought area. When tolerance
is in short supply – beware! Upset me at your peril. If you do cut me up on a motorway it is just possible that I will ignore my destination and follow you to yours to remonstrate with you! Yes, you should be worried.
Molehills are indeed mountains – very big ones What a tolerance drought means is that molehills are in fact mountains, or straws (breaking camels backs, apologies about multiple metaphors). I guess by the time we have lived a few decades we have all dealt with a number of ‘big deals’, literally for many of us we have experienced births, marriages and deaths but also break ups, house moves, natural disasters, illnesses and goodness knows what else and for most of us we have used a lot of our resources dealing with such things. What that means is that while I can be calm in the face of a proper crisis, I simply fall apart with a computer that won’t work, a car that won’t start, no milk in the fridge or heaven forbid no wine!!! Yes, it might be a teeny tiny molehill for you but for me it might be of Everest proportions. I have less and less to lose In sheer numerical terms a lot of the things that would inhibit me doing things I maybe wanted to earlier in life, like knocking someone senseless (it’s not a frequent risk but it does occur), such as serious injury or imprisonment no longer seems such a terrible deterrents. You see as you get older, there is less to lose. This has implications for anyone who might upset me because quite simply prison might be better than a home for OAPs! I don’t know if you have seen Chicago but terrible things happened to a husband who ‘popped’ his chewing gum and of course one husband reportedly ran into a knife ran into a knife 10 times!.. Beware! I rest my case.

Tips for Removing your Make-up
In recent years, we have seen an influx of makeup removing methods, from the magic makeup cloth that uses just water to cleansing oils that you massage in before you remove. Each product promises to remove your stubborn mascara and some nourish your skin in the process. Here, Amanda Von Hagen, lead product developer and skin specialist at Glo Skin Beauty, talks us through 7 tips to ensure you go to bed fresh faced instead of waking up with lipstick stains from the night before.
1. Don’t rub your eyes Mascara can be a nightmare to remove, especially waterproof. The best way to get your eye makeup off is to soak soft cotton pads or balls in the eye makeup remover and let it sit on your eyes for a few seconds. This loosens your makeup up without scrubbing which will only create problems due to how delicate the area is. Always remember never ever rub your eyes, only pat as rubbing can speed up the process of developing fine lines and wrinkles. 2. Steam your face Steam is your friend when it comes to makeup removal. You can fill your sink with steaming hot water (not boiling) and lean over it for a few minutes. The steam will unclog your pores which will make it a lot easier for you to remove your makeup with your regular routine. Alternatively, you can remove your makeup and then steam your face. Simply soak a washcloth in hot water, let it cool down for a few seconds and then place it on your face. Once the cloth has cooled, the dirt and impurities on your face will melt off.
3. Coconut oil This is the most versatile of products available, the natural product works as a moisturiser, hair nourishment, cooking ingredient and yes you guessed it, an effective makeup remover. The most effective way is to massage
the organic ingredient into your skin like a cleansing balm and rinse off with warm water before you wipe off the excess with a wet cloth.
4. Stubborn high pigment Vaseline is your saviour when it comes to high pigmented lipstick. Apply a pea size amount of Vaseline to your lips and leave it on for a few minutes. Once the time is up, use a damp towel and wipe your lips slowly to reveal a soft and clean pout. 5. No to baby wipes Some women do tend to believe that because a baby wipe is suitable for babies, then it must be good enough for your face. This is wrong – babies do not wear makeup that requires special ingredients for an intense removal, so if you use this during any step then you are merely moving around the makeup on your face as opposed to removing it.
6. Cleanse the edges of your eyelids The elusive edge of your eyelid, where your liner and mascara can build up over time is frequently neglected which is the major cause of eye irritation. If you line the top of your eyes with waterproof liquid liner, then you might need to use a more targeted tool to ensure every last bit is gone. Dip a side of a cotton bud into micellar water to wipe away any makeup residue in small areas. 7. Push all your hair back If you don’t have your hair pulled back, this means you’re likely stopping a couple inches short of your hairline when washing your face. People do often accumulate makeup residue around the hairline when washing their face which leads to clogged pores and breakouts, so tie it back or stick on a hairband in order to remove every last drop. Since breaking through in 2012 with her No.1 album Ora, Rita has become a force of nature in pop music. The singer has sold over 7 million singles in total and her latest five singles have been streamed over a billion times on Spotify. Some of her best-known hits include How We Do (Party), R.I.P., I Will Never Let You Down and Poison.
Rita has already cemented herself as one of the UK’s most successful pop acts of the decade and shows no signs of slowing down in 2019. Closing the night will be one of the leading lights of contemporary radio none other than Radio one DJ ‘MistaJam’. MistaJam is arguably the country’s biggest force in helping to shape the increasingly blurred musical landscape that overlaps pop, urban and electronic styles. His DJ set will incorporate the best music from around the world, enabling the Bedford Park audience to dance the night away.

Room with a View at London Marriott Hotel County Hall Wonderfully located along the vibrant Southbank, adjacent to Westminster Bridge and opposite the Houses of Parliament, is the luxurious five-star London Marriott Hotel County Hall. Previously home for 64 years to the political elite, this iconic building sits in one of the most prominent positions in London.
Opened in 1922 by King George V, the hotel’s history is evident as soon as you step through the doors, lots of dark wood panelling, classic fixtures and fittings and decadent details, including the prominent original marble fireplace opposite reception. Check-in here is a wonderful affair, nothing is too much trouble and includes a cool glass of bubbles to enjoy whilst you wait for all the paperwork to be completed.
The hotel features 206 rooms, 12 luxurious suites with spectacular views of London, including 7 spectacular balcony suites, and 4 executive suites, all set over 6 floors of this impressive Edwardian Baroque building.
And it was one of the spectacular balcony suites that was to be our London hideaway for the night. Situated on the 6th floor, which means the views are breath-taking, Westminster, London Bridge, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, The River Thames are just some of the iconic landmarks you can see, and then there’s the London Eye, you are so close, you could almost shake hands with the people in the pods!
The balcony really is the Jewel in the Crown here, the perfect place to sit and watch London Life, whether it’s watching it come to life first thing in the morning, or viewing the glittering skyline at night, whatever time, the attraction is constantly there, no wonder the hotel is classed as one of the most photographed hotels in the world. There are few city sights that can rival London at night, and we were lucky to have a prime spot in the centre of it all. Inside is just as luxurious, a contemporary designed room with quirky touches such as bespoke wallpaper in the bathroom and
hallway deciping a London street map, a unique orange armchair, a tribute to the orange and red leather-upholstered seating used in the former London council chamber.
A large marble bathroom with a wet-room style shower and a massive wardrobe built for two that included amongst many essentials a ‘selfie stick’ (it’s the little touches that stay with you). In the bedroom area a large comfortable bed was positioned perfectly, so you could lie down and look out the balcony doors without even lifting your head off the pillow! The lounge has a plush velvet grey two-seater sofa and waiting for us on the glass coffee table was a selection of the most delicious mini pastries and cakes, the suite was a little bit of luxury in the centre of London, I could have definitely stayed cocooned on the balcony all day, but dinner was calling, so a quick shower (I’ve spent too long sipping wine on the balcony) and it was time to explore more of this iconic hotel. Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar is named after James Gillray, the famed political caricaturist of the late 18th century. Retaining the buildings history and charm, oak panelling dominates throughout the bar and restaurant, with prints from James Gillray adorning the walls. An evening meal meant the views from the windows in both the bar and restaurant were those of twinkling lights from the imposing city skyline.
Mustard and yellow was the theme running through the bar, with a beautiful crystal chandelier taking centre stage. The drinks menu is extensive, wines, cocktails, spirits and if you’re a gin lover (who isn’t) there’s a choice of over 100 different ones (it could be a long night!) The restaurant itself has a slightly different vibe, a mixture of chunky wood and marble tables, surrounded with pale grey or turquoise soft leather chairs, black leather booths back up against the wood panelled walls and food is served via a dumb waiter, another throwback to the wonderful history that surrounds this building.

We began our dining with pan fried mackerel with marinated anchovies and an oyster dressing, utterly delicious, as was the Maldon salt baked Cornish oysters served with smoked streaky bacon and apple salsa.
It would be sacrilege to come to a steak house (especially one as exclusive as Gillray’s) and not have steak, so after changing my mind at least five times, I finally settled on the 200g bone out fillet, served with triple cooked chips, a garden salad and red wine sauce - this literally was one of the best steaks I have ever tasted. Hubbie had venison loin steak which he said was simply delicious, tender and a real treat to the taste buds. It’s not just the food here that’s first class, service is just as good, as is the attention to detail – you even get to pick your choice of knife for the steak. Was there any room for dessert? Not for me, but hubbie did manage a small helping of the Salcombe dairy ice cream (which is unlike him as he always seems to fit dessert in), I’m blaming the pull of those views in our suite again, which is where we were served coffee, sitting on the balcony looking out over the bustling London streets and unforgettable skyline. Finally we managed to drag ourselves away and retire for a blissful night’s sleep. Next morning, suitably refreshed, we were ready to watch the streets of Westminster slowly come to life below us before we headed off to the M Club executive lounge for breakfast. If you are staying in a suite then exclusive access to M Club executive lounge is included and as well as breakfast you can visit any time for complimentary snacks and drinks served all day to keep you ticking over.
When it comes to exceptional luxury stays in the heart of the city, London Marriott Hotel County Hall is breath-taking from every angle, it ticks all the boxes as a five-star retreat in the middle of the capital, with its authentic design, historic background and unrivalled breath-taking views, a stay here is something you need to do at least once, the only problem you’ll have is you won’t want to leave! Fry’s Footie Corner
June. I am not a fan of June. Why? Because there is very little football to watch! Certainly domestically, the season is over and it is all about preparations for the new campaign and at Peterborough United, I have been a busy man with recruitment.
The co-owners at my football club have tasked me with getting players in and players out and although it won’t be as busy as last summer, there is still plenty of work to be done. Of course, on the international front there are a number of tournaments taking place including the Women’s World Cup in France.
Our Ladies team at Posh have been very successful and I am sure the England team will do the nation proud under the guidance of Phil Neville. There are a number of younger age groups participating on the international stage as well and a lot of clubs will be scouting these players as they look to the future.
It was interesting to see the Europa League final taking place in Baku. Obviously the destination ensured that not many Arsenal or Chelsea supporters made the long trip. That made for a very weird atmosphere inside the stadium.
Chelsea ran out 4-1 winners in the end thanks to two goals from Eden Hazard and I think everyone expects that he will be at Real Madrid very shortly. I think that will be a loss for the Premier League. Hazard has been a very good player for Chelsea, he might not be the most physical of players, but he can withstand challenges, his balance is superb and he has been arguably the best Chelsea player in the last seven to eight years. Of course, there is still a lot of discussion around the manager at Stamford Bridge. He has tried to change the philosophy of that team in terms of the way that they play and it hasn’t been universally successful, certainly not with the supporters, but having said that, they won a major trophy at the end of it so he should be applauded. I am sure there will be plenty of rumours during June about players coming into the Premier League, but I can assure you that most business will be done in July as clubs will not want to be paying their players in June when they don’t even see them in preseason training!
It will be exciting though and there is always a buzz when the fixtures come out on the 20th June for the EFL. Let’s hope from a selfish point of view, Posh are at home on the opening day, Boxing Day, Easter Monday and the final day of the campaign! Until Next Month
