Practicing the Pause I don’t know if you have ever played the game Bopit, hilarious fun, and it rests on the principle of reacting and responding super quick to ‘commands’, which requires great concentration and of course if you are playing with others there may be attempts to distract you. It made me think a bit about life.
There are many occasions where a quick response is vital – when driving, if a car pulls out in front of you, or as a parent if a child reaches for something dangerous. But if we aren’t careful that sort of knee jerk, instinctive reaction can become our modus operandi and there are many situations where a considered response rather than a knee jerk reaction may be much more helpful. A pause can be used for effect when presenting, it can be used to gather our thoughts and often by pausing we have a moment to reflect on our response.
Over the last year or so we’ve experienced a global pause and many of us have found the increased time to reflect and consider something of value. But what is the value of a pause?
Well, it is probably fair to say our lives are fairly fast paced. When we find ourselves with time or space, we usually rush to fill it. While that isn’t in any way wrong, what can happen is that we live at such a pace that stress and anxiety can become part of our everyday experience and we know that while short bursts of stress can be good for us, prolonged stress, worry and anxiety most definitely aren’t. In nature it seems there are times of immense busyness but also built-in times for pause and reflection. Seasons sometimes feel like pauses, fields may be left fallow animals may hibernate. Nature can’t be rushed, but in our busy urban lifestyles we have come to expect everything to happen quickly, almost instantly, robbing ourselves and others of the benefit of a pause.
Many of us may have had the experience of giving a quick retort and later regretting it – or sending an email or text and wishing we could take it back. In many ways we are geared for fast reactions – that is what living in today’s world has taught us. Especially when there is an emotional element involved, when something angers or frustrates us for example. If we react instantly we usually react from the feeling (limbic) area of the brain rather than the thinking (cortical) part of the brain. Those emotional reactions often inflame situations, because of course the other person probably reacts emotionally too. When we can take a pause between the stimulus (what upset us) and our response we are much more likely to respond from a thinking perspective, rather than an emotional one.
Sometimes we respond to what we think a person has said or intended, but often there can be miscommunications and if we respond when we aren’t clear or have made assumptions, we make things a hundred times worse. Allowing time for a pause isn’t just helpful for us but it shows respect for the other person it gives us the chance to really listen and ‘hear’ what has been said. If you’ve ever had an experience of being misunderstood you will recognise that it can be extremely frustrating. Sometimes reacting quickly can make us feel in control. We may think that a quick response shows we are knowledgeable and decisive, but I imagine many of us have examples of times we’ve responded without thinking and ended up taking on more work or agreeing to something we’d really rather not agree to. So, getting into the habit of pausing can be a very good thing and a pause doesn’t always mean silence, it can be a pause to clarify or check understanding but will create for us some valuable time.
When we pause, we find ourselves in the present. Rather than racing ahead to think of a response it allows us a few moments to reflect on the stimulus and how that aligns with ourselves and our values and principles. The response we then make might be very different.
Sometimes we may feel pressured into responding quickly whether to a message or within a conversation, but actually allowing ourselves time to pause is usually doing ourselves a favour and may prevent considerable upset in the future. We would do better to cultivate our ability to reject the demand for instantaneous responses it is okay to need some time for consideration. When we pause, we allow ourselves an opportunity to reflect, what has brought us to this point, is it where we want to be, it allows us a chance to question ourselves, or even our relationships and purpose, to ask questions of ourselves and to reset.
Building time to pause in our day to day lives is important too. Times when we stop and take time to ‘be’ rather than ‘do’ and when we can start to do that regularly then when the need arises in a response to a stimulus or a demand then we will find we are better able to be calm and resist an instantaneous response, opting instead for a pause and hopefully, a measured response. How to Reverse the Effects of Sun Damage on the Skin We caught up with Skincare aesthetics expert Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, who runs an aesthetics practice in Mayfair London, Manchester and Cheshire, He is the UK’s most followed aesthetics doctor (over 675k followers on Instagram), and is also a NHS GP.
Our relationship with the sun is complex; it’s like that on/off romantic relationship all of us have had! We know the sun isn’t good for our skin, but so many of the things that come with the sun – holidays, days at the beach, enjoying some drinks in the sun and picnics – are great fun. The reality is though that once the sun has damaged our skin, it’s not easy to reverse. In fact reverse isn’t really
the right phrase as it suggests we can take our skin back to what it was. That’s not possible. Once damage is done to the skin’s DNA it will never go back to being exactly the same. But we can repair the damage and help restore our skin’s health once again.
Exposure to UV rays – particularly UVA rays which are from the sun – denatures the DNA in our skin cells, so the top layer of skin essentially becomes dead and sheds off. It also causes collagen to break down and results in the skin ageing process to speed up. Typical signs of sun damage include the initial sun burn but then later down the line increased lines, wrinkles and age spots. To combat damage is quite complex and needs to be tackled from both the inside and the outside.
june21.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/06/2021 20:01 Page 11
One simple way to help nourish your skin from the inside is by drinking plenty of water. This keeps skin hydrated and maintains elasticity, which helps reduce wrinkles and soft lines. For similar reasons, it’s a good idea to avoid alcohol. The reason so many people feel thirsty the morning after a heavy drinking session is that alcohol dehydrates you. It’s a diuretic and so you lose a lot more water by going to the bathroom more frequently. Dehydration causes lines and wrinkles to be more visible and skin to be duller. So increasing your water and decreasing your alcohol intake will help to encourage your skin’s natural repair.
Tackling sun damage from the outside involves various treatments and products. Ultimately, what we’re looking to do is use treatments and products that help repair the skin’s dermis and epidermis, which are the top two layers of skin, and encourage the production of collagen. Our skin’s collagen naturally decreases with age – and sun damage speeds this up even more. After the age of 20, we produce around 1% less collagen each year, gradually causing the skin to lose its plumpness and appear thinner and more fragile. The three key ingredients to look for in skincare products are Vitamin C, Retinol (Vitamin A) and SPF. We don’t get enough Vitamin C from diet alone and this helps the skin look a lot brighter and gives you a glow from within. Choose a product which contains Vitamin C in ascorbic acid form. This is absorbed easily into your cells and is the only one that has scientific research to back-up the claims that it can help skin.
Retinol (Vitamin A) is also amazing for skin; it essentially helps repair the healthy dermis and epidermis and stimulates the reproduction of new skin cells. Without it skin can become very dry and dull.
In addition, the two ingredients that have strong medical research behind them showing they help with anti-ageing and skin recovery is SPF and Retinol, so these are without a doubt essential. Retinol repairs the healthy dermis and epidermis, increasing skin cell turnover and stimulating the reproduction of new skin cells, enabling fresher, smoother skin to be produced much faster, reducing classic sun damage signs such as wrinkles and fine lines.
SPF is an obvious one. The concern this year is that with many of us holidaying in the UK as opposed to travelling abroad due to the pandemic, we’re likely to see people not using SPF daily. Although the sun in the UK isn’t as hot as some foreign destinations, the UV rays are still high enough to cause sun damage to our skin and it’s so important we don’t disregard SPF protection. The SPF in make-up is also slightly misleading. Technically, if a foundation has SPF20 in it, then that’s what it has but realistically this will not provide enough protection. In order to achieve the level of SPF on the bottle you would need to apply so much product it would look completely odd and far too heavy. It’s much better to use a separate SPF and that way you have the coverage you need. I always recommend SPF50, no less. Re-application should happen every 2-3 hours, potentially more if you’ve been swimming or if you’re sweating a lot as not all SPFs are water-resistant and many become less effective if they become wet.
In terms of aesthetics treatments, the ultimate one I recommend to help combat sun damage is Ellanse - a new type of dermal filler. As well as helping to correct lines and wrinkles, this new product also stimulates the body's natural collagen production. So not only is it giving you immediate results, the results last a lot longer as your skin’s collagen is given a boost as well.
Another great treatment is the ‘vampire facial’ – which became really well known when Kim Kardashian-West had one and publicly shared pictures of her face. The vampire facial, also known as Platelet-Rich Plasma (PLP), uses the body’s own natural resources for healing. The treatment takes around 45 minutes and sees blood extracted and separated in a centrifruge, so that the plasma can be concentrated. It is then injected back into the skin, to promote new collagen growth and reduce the signs of ageing. Prevention is key in all of this; and saves you a lot of time (and money) reversing damage the sun has caused. Wear SPF50 daily, whether you’re in a hot climate or not, keep your face shaded where possible and avoid lying in the sun for hours on end. All quite simple things but your skin will be thanking you when you’re looking youthful, fresh and healthy as you get older. www.theaestheticsdoctor.com

Midlife Madness
I don’t know about you but sometimes I allow myself to be worn down and occasionally I end up agreeing to things that right from the word go I knew wouldn’t turn out well.
One recent such experience is starting the couch to 5k programme. It’s from NHS and aims to get you (well me) from the couch to 5k in about 9 weeks. If I’m honest I’m probably on target for something like 20 weeks but Hey Ho!
I must originally have shown some interest because references to it started to creep into all my social media – the way they do! Then hubby mentioned it might do us good (or was his real motive to cause me to have a heart attack) then on a zoom call with my youngest and his partner they mentioned they were doing it, so somehow in the heat of the moment I ended up agreeing. But with all sorts of questions in my head like ‘what’s wrong with the couch’ ‘who wants to do 5k anyway’ ‘what’s wrong with my regular walking’ and many more. Once upon a long time ago I actually did enjoy running but I also enjoyed going to night clubs and drinking advocaat, some things are right for a season!
But let me tell you a bit more about the app. In the course of 9 weeks, it gets you walking/jogging with ever increasing times of running so that by week 9 you are running for 30 minutes. As it’s an app you don’t have to time yourself just plug in your earphones and do as you are told.
You also get the chance to choose whose voice will accompany you on your runs. I chose Jo Whiley, I always admired her as a DJ on Radio 1 years ago and more latterly on Radio 2 and she is down in my book as an all-round good egg. So, she’ll tell me when it’s time to get ready to
run or slow down to a walk and remind me that mindset is important and I love running (not utterly convinced) and that I’ve done well – she is very encouraging. Apparently, she has completed the programme but when I’m running, I swear I can hear her turning the pages of the script and pouring wine – is that just my own warped mind! Honestly if in the future she comes on the radio I think I’ll either start running or have a major meltdown.
We tend to run in the fields, or woods near our home but mix it up a bit by sometimes going slightly further afield and runs are definitely enhanced by seeing ducklings and baby moorhens. It usually starts with a 5-minute walk when she actually says you should be able to chat comfortably while walking so it’s great I get to bend hubby’s ear in fact I sometimes store things up so I can talk about them on our runs – well the brisk walks section - when I’m running I couldn’t possibly talk as well.
The running and the ever-increasing times of running are the tough bit. I’m sure there is a definition of running I’m not sure that what I do would match that definition though it definitely takes more effort than walking, occasionally I notice that hubby is running round a tree a few times as he waits for me to catch up and when I am almost collapsing and struggling for breath, he is irritatingly looking cool and unruffled.
But the point is it’s doing me good, isn’t it! I mean the app is from the NHS so it must be mustn’t it. And I just need to banish the thoughts that say I could be comfortably on the couch eating chocolate and drinking alcohol – that sounds like quite a good option. One thing I can say for sure is that I always feel like wonder woman when it’s done.

How Can Plants Help Mental Health?
In this current climate it is normal to feel anxious and overwhelmed, creating a plant space or filling each room with plants will subtly ease you into meditation. An environmentally rich addition to you house will ease stress levels and relax your mind. Active plant care is a small but effective way to look after your mental wellbeing.
By bringing your attention to caring for your plants, you can focus solely on the present moment and distract your brain from anxious thoughts. Plants are also a great way to take a much-needed technology break, focusing on your plants even if it is a few minutes a day, forces you to stop and appreciate what is around you. To further explore plants and mental health, their psychological effects, and whether they’re good for you we’ve enlisted the help of mental health experts at Support Room. Psychological Effects of Indoor Plants Plants are more than decorative objects. Studies have found that plants can help to improve your mood and have been
linked with certain psychological and physical benefits. For example, cleaner air or lower stress levels.
Improves air quality - Plants are natural air purifiers and help to remove toxins from the atmosphere. Depending on your exposure, chemicals in the air could lead to negative health effects depending on your exposure. Plants can take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and produce oxygen which improves the air quality. They also have properties which help to reduce airborne dust levels and increase air humidity so you can eliminate coughing, fatigue and itchy eyes. Anxiety - Indoor plants can lower levels of anxiety. You may find that being surrounded by plants can reduce symptoms building up and restore calm. Taking care of them can also be therapeutic. In Manchester, certain medical clinics have even “prescribed” potted plants to those suffering with mental health issues. Productivity - Plants can help with productivity; research has proven that people perform better at attention-based
june21.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/06/2021 20:01 Page 15
tasks when surrounded by plants. Everyone has certain days in which they spend a lot of time staring at a screen, unable to be productive, all you need to solve that is plant therapy. A research study conducted at Exeter University found out that indoor plants can improve concentration, productivity and staff well-being by 47%. These effects come from stimulating plant colours, calming aromas and oxygenating abilities. Since many of us are working from home, we spend several hours indoors and are being exposed to high amounts of CO2. This makes it harder to concentrate and think clearly. The oxygen that is created by indoor plants helps to balance the level of CO2 in our bodies.
Which plants are good for mental health? Aloe vera is one of the easiest plants to take care of and helps purify the air. Usually, you can cut off the leaves to treat a wound or to repot it. So, you might find that cutting off the leaves to repot it can symbolise getting rid of things no longer necessary for its growth. Lavender is an extremely popular plant, for good reason.
Many people use the scent to help them calm down, which is why it’s effective for anxiety or sleep. Lavender is also a beautiful plant to have indoors.
You can also consider eucalyptus, due to its clean aroma. Eucalyptus can help clear your mind and is useful for colds or asthma. Peace lilies are also worth investing in, as they can neutralise harmful indoor chemicals. More than that, people have found that their mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing thrive because of it.
Lastly, snake plants are incredibly durable and so don’t require a lot of attention. Since they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, they can also purify the oxygen wherever they are. Plants can provide the perfect opportunity for this lockdown to lift your spirits up. They’re not only beneficial when it comes to decoration, but they can improve your physical and mental wellbeing. Passion Fruit Curd, Mango & Lime Tarts “A delightful little tart that’s perfect for afternoon tea or as an after-dinner pudding”
Ingredients
Meringue 100g egg whites (from 3 medium eggs) 180g caster sugar 1/8 tsp sea salt 1 tsp vanilla paste Mascarpone Passionfruit Curd 2 Alphonso mangoes 60g The Cherry Tree Passion Fruit Curd 150g mascarpone Zest and juice from ½ lime 1 passionfruit Physalis (optional)
Method
Line 4 individual loose-bottom baking tins (10-12 cm) or 1 larger (20 cm) tin with the pastry. Prick the base, line with baking parchment, fill with baking beans, and blind bake at 180 degrees C for 15 mins. Remove the baking beans and parchment, return to the oven for another 6 mins or until the pastry is golden and cooked through. Leave to cool completely. For the meringue, pour 3 cm water into a small saucepan and place on a medium heat. Put the egg whites, salt and sugar in the bowl of a standard mixer and place on top of the saucepan (the water must not touch the base of the bowl). Hand whisk constantly for 5-7 mins, until the meringue becomes pale and foamy. When the temperature reaches 71 degrees C, return the bowl to the mixer stand, add the vanilla paste, and whisk on a high speed for 5 mins, until the meringue stiffens and is cool to the touch. Spoon the meringue into an icing bag fitted with a 1 cm round nozzle. For the filling, cut both sides off 1 mango, scoop out the flesh (90-100 g) and blitz to a smooth puree. Beat the mango with the mascarpone, Passion fruit Curd and lime juice. Add more lime to taste. Cut both sides off the second mango, remove the cheeks and slice finely. Spread a layer of Passion Fruit Curd over the base of the tarts. Spoon in the passion fruit & mango mascarpone and decorate with fans of the sliced mango. Pipe the meringue onto the tart and briefly blow torch to caramelise (or place under a very hot grill for a few seconds). Sprinkle with the lime zest and physalis and serve straight away. Fry’s Footie Corner
In my last column, I talked about how we were so close to promotion to the Sky Bet Championship but now I can officially say, I am Director of Football of a Sky Bet Championship side! My word we did not do it the easy way! We were 3-0 down to Lincoln City at the Weston Homes Stadium and looked dead and buried, but credit to the manager and the players because they fought back and got the point we needed with almost the last kick of the game.
I have been in football a long time, 60 years in fact, and I don’t think I have ever seen a game like it or certainly a finish like it. I am only just recovering now! It is not good for my heart working in football! It is certainly going to be a challenge at the level above, but it is one that we are very much looking forward too. For me, I am sure the summer will be busy with recruitment and player sales, but there won’t be much money about. The pandemic has put pay to players thinking they can get huge wages at this level. Football clubs will have to be incredibly sensible to balance the books and there will be a lot of players struggling to find clubs.
We have already managed to tie down some of our key players down on longer contracts. That was the aim for the first couple of weeks of the summer, retain the ones that we wanted to keep hold of and now it is down to me to move some of those we don’t want on, which will prove difficult I am sure.
It was nice to watch the play-offs at Wembley Stadium over the Bank Holiday Weekend. I think for the first time in a long while, the team that finished in third place in the Championship and League One secured promotion and the team that finished fourth in League Two also tasted success.
Congratulations to Brentford (particularly given a large promotion bonus we have for Ivan Toney), Blackpool and Morecambe on their achievements. Of course, although the domestic campaign is over, we have the Euros to look forward to in the summer and England have a really good chance to being successful if they can keep their players clear of injury.
Phil Foden, Harry Kane, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, Jordan Sancho – we have some wonderful attacking talent to choose from. Hopefully Gareth finds a spot for them all! Let’s go out there and try and outscore the opposition, particularly if we are struggling defensively with a number of players missing through injury or loss of form. It should be a fun summer! Stay Safe

Santa Caterina, Amalfi Coast
june21.qxp_Jan 2014 Aff 01/06/2021 20:04 Page 48
Time to Put Hotel Santa Caterina on your Wishlist Hotel Santa Caterina recently reopened their doors to welcome visitors to experience an authentic taste of the Amalfi Coast. The perennial buzz surrounding the Amalfi Coast has lured travellers for countless years and despite it only stretching for 30 miles, the destination offers enough idyllic beauty and Italian luxury for a standalone trip. Travellers looking for Old World romance and la dolce vita find it in its winding seaside roads, charming coastal towns and in some of the best hotels in the world.
Perched on the edge of the Amalfi Coast, the exquisite 19th century family-owned Hotel Santa Caterina looks over the bay of Naples and is immersed in the delicate scents of the orange and lemon groves.
Hotel Santa Caterina will be expanding their offering to include two new villas later this year. Recently acquired by the Gambardella family, the “Villas della Marchesa” offer breathtaking view of the Mediterranean, immersed in the peaceful setting of the Amalfi lemon groves. The villas have been renovated enhancing the extraordinary beauty of the natural environment in which they are immersed, whilst still preserving the original structure of the buildings. More information to follow in the coming weeks.
Hotel Santa Caterina has partnered with a legendary London hotel, Claridge’s, to bring a taste of the Amalfi coast to Mayfair. The hotel chefs have collaborated on a Mediterranean menu which is available at the Claridge’s Bar Terrace until the end of September. Diners will be able to experience Hotel Santa Catarina’s delicious flavours, with dishes ranging from the hotel’s classic white truffle pizza to home-made spaghettini with lemon cream sauce and red prawns – all presented on beautiful Hotel Santa Catarina hand painted crockery. The hotel’s flagship restaurant, Glicine, has been awarded a Michelin star two years in a row. At the helm is Chef Giuseppe Stanzione who joined Glicine in 2019 and aims to deliver a menu focused on local recipes and Mediterranean flavours as well as elegant and innovative dishes. The hotel offers guests panoramic views of the iconic sweeping azure-blue Amalfi Coast as well as exclusive access to, via two private elevators carved into the rock of the coast, the private beach club where they can soak up the Mediterranean sun and swim in the heated pool. It is uniquely the only Leading Hotel close to Amalfi town that

Fully equipped with a capacity of up to four guests, the first of the three beautifully crafted new self-contained marine lodges will be available at the end of April, just in time for the May Bank Holiday weekend.
“We’re delighted to be able to offer visitors to our Mercury Yacht Harbour and Holiday Park a really unique overnight experience,” says marina manager, Simon Cothill.

It is truly a cabin berth experience for family and friends wanting to get out on the water together, or boaters who don’t have enough berths to accommodate everyone overnight.”
Overlooking Badnam Creek, the spectacular views of both the creek and the River Hamble can be enjoyed from the lodges’ open-air seated decking area created around the entrance to the marine lodge. “With so many activities now available at the marina and holiday park, the new on water lodges mean that anyone visiting for a sailing course, a paddle boarding adventure with the team at Wesup or dining at our onsite restaurant the Gaff Rigger can extend their stay, enjoying more time in the surrounding area and all that there is available,” continues Simon.
“We’re only a 20-minute walk from picturesque Hamble Village and its independent shops and variety of restaurants, and our riverside location lends itself to amazing walks and cycle rides. And with the marine lodges being fully insulated and having an airconditioning and heating unit, they’re an idea short stay staycation option all year round.” BOOK IT

Grease Lightning As Grease the Musical heads to Milton Keynes Theatre this August we caught up with Peter Andre who will be playing not one, but two parts in this smash hit musical.
The Grease tour had to be put on hold last year because of coronavirus restrictions. What are you most looking forward to about finally being back on the road? I’m looking forward to everything, especially because everyone is going to be so happy being back at work - and that doesn’t include us on stage, it’s everyone from the lighting guys to the sound guys to the people who work in the venues. The atmosphere is going to be, excuse the pun, electrifying. I want to make up for lost time and make sure that every single show is going to be immense fun! It’s such an uplifting, feel-good show. Is that what audiences are craving right now? Absolutely. There’s still so much uncertainty, with new variants and what have you, and we’ve learned to accept that we live in incredibly uncertain times and we have to make the most of everything. We’re going to be so grateful to be performing and I believe audiences are going to be so happy to be back in a theatre. I’m sure I can speak of anyone who is going back on stage after all this time in saying how exciting it’s going to be. And Grease is such a great show to put a smile on people’s faces.
You played Teen Angel in the 2019 tour and now you’re also doing double duty as Vince Fontaine. What are the logistics of playing dual roles? [Laughs] I may even be doing a third role, namely a police officer, depending on whether or not I can get changed on time. The more characters the better for me. Each one of them has a different accent, so I get to do different dialects, and it’s good to be acting as well as singing. With Vince Fontaine and Teen Angel it’s a very quick change but I love the energy of that. There’s just one song, which I’m not in, during which I have time to get out of one outfit and into a completely different one, with the wig and everything. But it’s really good fun. There are so many iconic musical numbers in the show. Do you have a favourite to perform?
Even though my main song is Beauty School Drop-Out, I also get to sing Grease with the rest of the cast and that’s such a great, iconic song that really gets everyone going. Are you comfortable in 1950s fashion? Love them! And it’s amazing how many things come back in fashion. OK, flares tried to make a comeback and my wife wears flares and they really suit her, but for guys flares haven’t really kicked off again - not that they’re from the 50s, of course. I do love the big 50s hair, though. Nowadays you don’t want to look too vain so for guys it’s short-ish hair but back then it was all about the quiff and the DA, and I love that.
Since it premiered in 1971 Grease has proven such an enduring musical both on stage and film. Why do you think that is? Everybody loves it. For me as a child there were two movies I watched again and again - and those were Back to the Future and Grease. What’s interesting about the theatre version is that it’s the original script, not the one we know from the movie. It’s still the same songs and still pretty much the same dialogue, but some of the songs are in different places and in the original script Sandy is darkhaired and from America, not blonde and from Australia. And everyone can relate to being a teenager, whether that’s from a nostalgic point of view or if you’re a teenager right now. There’s a glamour to the teenagers in Grease, though, and that’s another draw; it’s set in sunny America whereas you might have grown up in wet and windy England.
How does it resonate for audiences today? I think it’s what we as teenagers always wished our high schools were like. And it appeals to all ages. When I said to my kids Junior and Prince ‘Let’s watch the movie Grease, it’s brilliant’ before I went on stage with it they were like ‘No thanks, it’s not our type of thing’. Then they came to see me in the show one night and suddenly they were like ‘We love this, let’s watch the movie’. It’s come full circle. The

new generation see the stage show and then go and watch the movie, whereas the old generation have seen the movie and now they want to go and watch the stage show.
You made your musical theatre debut in the 2019 production. What took you so long to getting around to doing it? It was just something I never thought of doing, ever. It’s the same when people ask me ‘Why didn’t you audition for Home and Away or Neighbours?’ but, although I loved them, it just never appealed to me. I feel too proud to say that I sold out the likes of Wembley Arena and The O2 over three decades and now there are all these other things I get to do that I’ve never done before - like feature films and stage shows. Acting is something I studied as a kid and I love doing something that combines acting, singing and dancing. Back in the old days, if you wanted to be an actor you had to learn how to sing and dance and if you wanted to be a singer you also learned how to act and dance. Now a lot of kids are like ‘I want to be a singer’ and that’s it. In the olden it was all about performance. You would go and see artists like Michael Jackson, Prince or Madonna and it was all about the show - the dancing, the singing, the drama. Getting to do all three with a show like Grease is brilliant. You made your professional debut as a contestant on Australia’s New Faces when you were just 16. Did you ever imagine you’d have such a lasting career in entertainment? No, but I’m so grateful I’ve had this career and I never take it for granted. I remember being on tour with Bobby Brown as the opening act in Australia and at the time he was the biggest R&B star. There I was on stage with him and he was a megastar to me. I thought he’d be going for ever and I’d just have my five minutes of fame, so I look back and think ‘I would never in a million years have expected to have had all this’. I feel very lucky and luck does play a big part in it, as does staying with the same people; I mean, I’ve been
with my manager for 30 years now. I think loyalty and keeping friends in the industry are definitely part of it.
What’s the one thing you couldn’t be on the road without? I guess my phone. I know that’s a typical thing to choose but FaceTime is such a wonderful thing. I ring my mum and dad in Australia every single day, bar the odd day here and there. Also I used to say my coffee machine was a musthave on tour, but nowadays there are so many great coffee shops. I need that caffeine! I do drink tea at night but I’m a coffee man during the day.
You’re bringing the show to the Milton Keynes Theatre. Does it have any resonance for you? One of my brothers, Danny, lives near Milton Keynes and the only time I get to see him is when I’m performing there. I’ve been to Milton Keynes quite a few times and with the coffee business I have I’ve worked with United Coffee, whose headquarters are there. Grease is appearing at Milton Keynes Theatre from Monday 23rd – Saturday 28th August 2021, tickets are available from www.atgtickets.com.
